Ex-tempore Ptuj Karneval 2003 - 2020 ko umetniki rišejo zgodovino
Ex-tempore Ptuj Karneval 2020 – umetniški vrhunec 60. Kurentovanja
V tem času smo zastavljali in udejanjali vizionarske strateške cilje: Ptuj-Pustna prestolnica Slovenije, Evropsko karnevalsko mesto, Največji muzej pustne kulturne dediščine Evrope na prostem, Kurent(ovanje) v UNESCO, FECC Evropska prestolnica karnevalov... z uvajanjem novih mednarodno primerljivih programskih vsebin.
Ex-tempore Ptuj Carnival 2003 - 2020 when the artists paint the history At the beginning of the millennium, the city of Ptuj was bursting with art, and the protagonist behind these events was the Tenzor Gallery. Every month it featured a new exhibition either by a Slovenian or by a foreign artist, an international art colony for young artists (which later became and is now known as the Art Stays Contemporary Art Festival) was set in motion; the only thing still missing was an ex-tempore art award. And what other time of the year in Ptuj would be more suitable than the Kurentovanje carnival, when diverse colors and various shapes of traditional masks are just calling out to be captured by an artist's eye. And so it began. After the Tenzor Gallery had closed down, the Art Stays Culture and Arts Association took over the reins of its exhibition activities and the organization of the festival, which soon enough expanded to become the largest event of its kind in the country; and when in 2011 the city was bursting again with excitement on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture, Art Stays has decided to bring to life the Extempore International Award once again. And it still goes on today, under the auspices of the City Municipality of Ptuj, which has accepted and welcomed it as a great contribution to enriching the heritage of Kurentovanje and the carnival tradition. This is the heritage that stands before you today; I wish you plenty of visual pleasure in the company of artworks by international artists who were inspired by Ptuj, along with all its carnival and other charms. And be sure not to miss the exhibitions of the already 12th Ex-tempore Ptuj Carnival 2020 Award.
Ex-tempore Ptuj Carnival 2020 – the artistic highlight of the 60th Kurentovanje festival With pride and modesty, I wish to express gratitude for the honor and reward that over the last thirty years I have been able to contribute in various roles to the wonderful 60year-long history of the International Carnival Festival Kurentovanje. Throughout this period of time, we have been setting up new objectives and pursuing our visionary strategic goals, while introducing new program contents based on comparable international practices, such as Ptuj – the Carnival Capital of Slovenia; the European Carnival City; Europe's largest open-air museum of carnival cultural heritage; recognition of Kurent(ovanje) by UNESCO; the FECC's European Capital of Carnivals, and many others. One of the festival's highlighting features is certainly the intertwining of its three program units, with EtnoFest standing at its foundation, along with CarnivalFest and ArtFest. The 12th traditional International Painting Ex-tempore, organized by the KUD Art Stays association, is the largest art event within the context of ArtFest. Its theme is in line with the event, thus mostly carnival-colored, as it seeks to enable artists to creatively experience and express our exceptional cultural heritage, primarily symbolized by Kurent, and to present top-notch cultural and artistic creations to the visitors of the festival. Congratulations and thankfulness are in order for the organizers for their longstanding enrichment of the Kurentovanje International Carnival Festival.

EX-TEMPORE PTUJ Mednarodna likovna nagrada Ex-tempore Ptuj – Karneval / Ex-tempore Ptuj – Carnival International Fine Arts Award 2003 - 2019
Doroteja Kotnik
Umetniki so najpogosteje upodabljali maske, pomlad in motive s Ptuja. V dosedanjih enajstih edicijah Ex-tempore so glavno nagrado Grand Prix Mestne občine Ptuj, podelili večinoma slovenskim akademskim umetnikom. Z bogatimi nagradami so pritegnili veliko domačih in tujih umetnikov, s čim so postali protiutež Ex-temporu v Piranu.
Poleg Vladimirja Forbicija so bili v žiriji Stojan Kerbler, mojster fotografije, Simona Vidmar, kustosinja v Umetnostni galeriji Maribor, Sofia Macchi, kustosinja v italijanski galeriji Punto sull'Arte, Sara Sist, pariška galeristka in kustosinja, in Mike Crawford, londonski fotograf iz Lighthouse Darkroom. Grand Prix MO Ptuj so podelili Tini Dobrajc. Umetnica mlade generacije nam predstavi nov pristop figuralnega realističnega slikarstva, na katerega vplivajo pravljice, ilustracije, basni in etnologija. Upodablja ženske, dekleta in živali, preko katerih nam razkriva stereotipe in tabuje, ki sovpadajo s temo sodobne ženske v današnji družbi. Z upodabljanjem lovskih
motivov želi zaustaviti nadaljevanje družinske lovske tradicije in hkrati javnost opozoriti na svet lovstva, nesmiselne smrti divjadi, hvalisanje z lovskimi trofejami in človeško dominacijo nad naravo. V letu 2015 so v strokovno komisijo zraven Vladimirja Forbicija in Marike Vicari povabili še kustosinjo ptujske Miheličeve galerije Stanko Gačnik, hrvaško umetnostno zgodovinarko Sando Bajzek in slikarja Zorana Ogrinca. Nagrado Galerije FO.VI. je prejela Kaja Urh za delo And here comes the Spring. V letu 2016 sta se v žiriji Vladimirju Forbiciju, Mariki Vicari in Stanki Gačnik pridružila še Sara Sist in Laszlo Laszlo Revezs.
Lansko leto so mesta v žiriji zasedli Vladimir Forbici, Irma Brodnjak, slikar Aleksij Kobal, novinarka Večera Petra Zemljič in Doroteja Kotnik, avtorica tega besedila.
Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia and once an important Roman settlement, is well known for its Kurentovanje festival, an event easily compared to many carnivals around the world. The festival has been named after a Kurent, a traditional carnival figure which, according to popular folk tradition, has the power to chase away winter and bring in springtime. Kurentovanje, en event dedicated to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage of carnival costumes and traditions in Ptuj and its surroundings, was first organized by the Historical Society of Ptuj in 1960, whereas this year, it is celebrating its sixtieth edition in a row. The rich tradition of carnival masks has always been a popular motif with many artists. The most famous of them is France Mihelič (1907–1998), who used the pagan figure of Kurent to create a world of figures and a grotesque figurative fiction. To honor this tradition, the Tenzor Gallery, whose mission has been carried on by the Art Stays Culture and Arts Society, created an international art prize event titled Ex-tempore Ptuj – Carnival. The Ptuj Ex-tempore was first held in 2003 and 2004, and after an eight-year standstill, it has been held annually since 2011. It is now a constant companion of Ptuj's Kurentovanje, and this year, its 12th edition, the Ex-tempore Ptuj 2020 International Fine Arts Award, will accompany the 60th anniversary of the Kurentovanje festival. The main organizer of the event is assisted by The City Municipality of Ptuj and by the Public Institute for Tourism Ptuj. KUD Art Stays has suggested a theme for the carnival, however, the artists are allowed the liberty of choosing their own topic. The most commonly depicted themes are masks, the spring, and motifs from Ptuj. The main prize, Grand Prix of the City Municipality of Ptuj, was predominantly awarded to Slovenian academy-trained artists. Interestingly enough, it was only in 2019 that a local artist, a painter and sculptor Tomaž Plavec, received the main award, despite their regular participation. Among award-winning Ptuj artists are also painters Dušan Fišer, Mito Gegič, who could also be listed as from Škofja Loka, Franc Simonič, Gregor Samastur, and Tjaša Čuš. In addition to the main prize, the following awards are also given out – Purchase and Grand Purchase Awards from Ptuj's companies and the City Municipality of Ptuj, the Young Artist Award, and the Most Original Kurent Award.. The first international Ex-tempore Ptuj event was organized in 2003 by the Tenzor Gallery, under the direction of Vladimir Forbici. By choosing masks as the main theme, they were hoping to establish a connection with the valuable (masquerade) tradition of Ptuj and its surroundings. With this international award, they also wanted to encourage young artists, as they adhered to the principle of showcasing all of the received works. Enticing rewards helped to attract many Slovenian and foreign artists, thus counterbalancing the Ex-tempore in Piran. The winners were selected by an expert panel consisting of local and foreign art connoisseurs. With as many as 170 participating painters, the first Ptuj Ex-tempore in 2003 was a great success. Their works had been assessed by a jury consisting of art historians Marjeta Ciglenečki and Polona Vidmar, gallerist Vladimir Forbici, and painters Dušan Fišer and Erik Lovko. The winning piece of work was created by Maribor's artist Bogdan Čobal, who produced an abstract image of a mask using expressive brush strokes and contrasting colors. At the following Ex-tempore in 2004, the expert commission composed of Vladimir Forbici, the curator of the Rotovž Salon Simona Vidmar, painters Jože Šubic, Darko Slavec, Viktor Rebernak, and Venetian painter Catarina Agnoletto, granted the main award to an academy-trained painter Uroš Weinberger. He painted a large-scale, carnival-themed figurative composition which simultaneously criticizes the
modern society, its violence and ignorance. Charged with criticism, his work urges the viewer to awaken from the current utopia and begin to reflect on today's society and topical issues. In 2004, the Tenzor Gallery ceased to exist and that put a temporary halt on the continuation of the Ptuj Ex-tempore. The principal actor of the Tenzor Gallery, Vladimir Forbici, nevertheless continued his gallery activities through the establishment of the KUD Art Stays association, bringing a fresh breeze of culture into the sleepy town of Ptuj. After an eight-year standstill, the activities for the organization of the Ex-tempore Ptuj - Carnival International Art Award were resumed once again in 2011, henceforth under the artistic direction of Jernej Forbici. The event had been enlisted in the program of the Kurentovanje carnival, and then used to apply for the project European Capital of Culture 2012. The City Municipality of Ptuj provided awards, which were given out by a jury consisting of international and domestic experts in the field of fine arts. In 2011, the expert commission included Marjeta Ciglenečki, Vladimir Forbici, Darko Slavec, and Italian painter and curator Marika Vicari. The Grand Prix of the Municipality of Ptuj was awarded to the painter Tanja Špenko for creating an abstract composition with characteristic expressive strokes of two contrasting colors, alluding to a notion of any carnival mask. A painter Barbara Jurkovšek was the recipient of the Grand Purchase Award from the company Talum d.d. In her work, she depicted grotesque images of kitschy fiction in which she criticized today's society, modern man, and his lust for consumerism. Her animal portraits associate well with the theme of the carnival, as animal expressions call to mind their "human" qualities and at the same time remind us of modern masks. The jury assigned the Grand Purchase Award of Miran Senčar to the local artist Dušan Fišer, whose work is commonly classified as abstract expressionism. He has created a large composition in which he explored the space on a two-dimensional canvas basis. From 2011 onwards, the international art award Ex-tempore Ptuj – Carnival is considered an annual event that artistically enriches the city during the carnival period. In 2012, Hungarian artist Laszlo Laszlo Revesz and German gallerist Matthias Ritter joined the expert panel from the previous year to form the jury. The Grand Prix was received by a painter Narcis Kantardzic; he paints romantic landscapes in which he places figures of people, thus emphasizing the idea of the smallness of man in an endless landscape. The artist's award-winning work was based on a similar concept. At the forefront, there is an image of Kurent without a mask who is staring at us, while at the background Kantardzic depicted his birthplace, the Ptuj countryside, in which he placed a stylized image of the Aljaž Tower from Mount Triglav, thus creating an icon of Slovenianness. Tjaša Čuš, a painter from Ptuj who received the Young Artist Award, should also be mentioned. Her award-winning work titled The Mask of Fear is a portrait of a young girl. The agony in her expression and the suffering in her blue eyes evoke unpleasant feelings in a viewer that reach straight to his heart. These sentiments are still further enhanced by the pronounced deformity of her face, possibly reminiscent of a creature or a mask from the Ptuj carnival. This work was created during her studies, when she was engaged in a painting experiment and was exploring the relationship between portrait and therapy; she painted a series of portraits of people with special needs in an attempt to reveal the underlying taboos. It was then she first realized that with her portraits she wants to break down existing ideals and show people's authenticity instead, since at key moments people tend to put on a mask to protect themselves from all the evil. Tjaša Čuš thus wants to remove these human masks and unveil the truth. A part of Ptuj's Ex-tempore 2012
was also the selection of the best graffiti arts that were created throughout the streets of Ptuj during the carnival days. The expert commission presented the main award to a Ptuj artist Aleksander Fenos, who created an image of a boy skeptically contemplating topical issues in the underpass on Jadranska street. 2013 brought new collaborators to the Ex-Tempore among both artists and jurors. Besides Vladimir Forbici, the judging panel included Stojan Kerbler, master of photography; Simona Vidmar, curator at the Maribor Art Gallery; Sofia Macchi, curator at the Punto sull'Arte Gallery from Italy; Sara Sist, gallerist and curator from Paris; and Mike Crawford, photographer from Lighthouse Darkroom, London. The Grand Prix of the City Municipality of Ptuj was awarded to Tina Dobrajc, a younggeneration artist who featured a new approach and perspective towards figurative realistic painting, influenced by fairy tales, illustrations, fables, and ethnology. Her works depict women, girls, and animals, and through them she exposes us to stereotypes and taboos that coincide with the theme of a modern woman in today's society. Her award-winning painting showcases a girl dressed in a kurent costume, standing in the middle of a snow-covered birch forest. The artist's use of female protagonists, paired with traditional ethnological attributes, creates images of a Slovenian girl haunted by anxiety, repressed desires and emotions. A frontally portrayed girl with blue eyes and a serious, bittery expression, crowned with a kurent mask, is staring at the viewer, letting him know that a girl, too, can be Kurent. This relates to the artist's idea of portraying a female warrior who embarked on a journey through the rite of passage from girlhood to womanhood. Mito Gegič was the winner of the Grand Purchase Award with his painting titled Carnival, featuring a company of hunters returning with their catch. Gegič has created a unique reinterpretation of a digital image; firstly, he looks for hunting motifs, paints them on an adhesive-tape-glued canvas, then he disassembles the image and reassembles it on a new canvas. By depicting hunting motifs, he wants to put a halt on the continuation of his family's hunting tradition, while alerting the public of the dangers of the world of hunting, the senseless deaths of wildlife, bragging about hunting trophies, and human domination over nature. Though his work did not relate directly to the carnival theme, he nevertheless wanted to show his experience with the hunting tradition that he had encountered in his childhood years, when he was living in the Ptuj area. In 2014, the expert panel consisted of Marika Vicari, Dušan Fišer, the curator of the association Phanes from Turin Domenico Maria Papa, as well as gallerists and curators Elisabetta Donaggio and Alfredo Pugnalin, both from the L'Occhio Gallery from Venice. The Grand Prix of Ptuj has been won by painters Andreja Repnik, for her satirical depiction of a skeleton of a dead kurent, and by Suzana Jović, who used a very limited color scale to create an expressive portrayal a modern girl preparing herself for carnival festivities. The Grand Purchase Award went to the local painter Franc Simonič for his depiction of a rural landscape with a Kurent in the foreground. The image split by geometric stripes reminds us of the Kurent's decoration and highlights discrepancies between traditional and contemporary carnival. In addition to Vladimir Forbici and Marika Vicari, the expert commission of 2015 also included the curator of Ptuj's Mihelič Gallery Stanka Gačnik, Croatian art historian Sanda Bajzek, and painter Zoran Ogrinec. The Grand Prix winner was Oto Vogrin; he created a graphic work titled 51 Ways of Fitting a Kurent inside a Lighter Box. It consists of 30 boxes with a Kurent hidden inside. The FO.VI Gallery Award went to Kaja Urh for her work And here comes the Spring. This
young artist had portrayed two Kurents, set in an urban environment, who have just accomplished their mission – they chased away the winter and awakened the spring – while bystanders are marveling at their garnishment. The viewer observes the scene from a pre-defined point of view, imposed by the author through an innovative visual technique; that is, she uses a classical painting technique – oil on canvas – to build up images in layers or strips, thus creating a digital code. In 2016, jurors Vladimir Forbici, Marika Vicari, and Stanka Gačnik were joined by Sara Sist and Laszlo Laszlo Revezs. The Grand Prix of the Municipality of Ptuj was awarded to Tanja Špenko, the only participating artist who managed to receive the main prize twice. The Grand Purchase award went to Sabina Šinko, who created a subtle image of the spring-time awakening of nature, whereby insects had already visited flowers. The 2017 jury had fewer members than in previous years; Vladimir Forbici has been joined by an art historian Alenka Domjan and Loretta Molinari, curator at the Nuovospazio Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Piacenza, Italy. The main prize was presented to the academytrained painter Mira Uršič who featured a collage of images depicting Kurent, the carnival, and a veduta of Ptuj. The Most Original Kurent Award was handed to the Ptuj painter Gregor Samastur for his modern interpretation of the traditional carnival character. The image of Kurent is captured in the artist's underground fantasy world, full of demonic figures. The 2018 Ex-tempore expert panel was composed of V. Forbici, painter Tanja Špenko, art historian and curator at the Murska Sobota Gallery Irma Brodnjak, and Italian artists Verena Fanny Trausch and Riccardo Costantini. A young artist Andreja Srna was awarded the Grand Prix of the Municipality of Ptuj for her painting of a girl in a shop, who is standing in front of a drawer decorated with painted cityscapes of Ptuj. The artist depicts architectural details from Ptuj's city center on labels of glass containers. With its monochrome palette and drawing elements, she conjures up a world of her own, filled with memories from the past. But regardless its nostalgic connotations, there is a certain kind of serenity and hope emanating from the painting, and the motif can also be interpreted as an instilment of hope for a brighter future of the old town. The Great Purchase Award of the City Municipality of Ptuj was won by a Croatian artist Željko Strelec, who creates drawings on wood using the pyrography technique. He depicted a fisherman at work, positioned on the river bank of Drava, in front of an idyllic cityscape of Ptuj. In the previous year, jury seats were occupied by Vladimir Forbici, Irma Brodnjak, painter Aleksij Kobal, journalist of daily newspaper Večer Petra Zemljič, and Doroteja Kotnik, the author of the present text. The main prize was presented to Tomaž Plavec, an artist from Ptuj who had participated in all eleven editions of Ex-Tempore. It happened for the first time that the Ex-tempore Ptuj Award has been won for a sculptural work produced by a local artist. QRENT, as the sculpture is titled, reveals the author's outlook on today's consumer-driven society which promotes Kurent as a brand. Plavec has created a perforated cube with a wounded Kurent. He urges the viewer to look into the heart of Kurent and rediscover its true mission. The Purchase Award by the City Municipality of Ptuj went to the Italian artist Silene Arnaldi for her art book The Inner Voice, in which she incorporated the subtle images of her inner thoughts, enriched with verses and various decorative details and materials. Carnival-themed artistic expressions are the common thread running through all eleven of Ex-tempore Ptuj - Carnival event editions, with Kurent being the most often depicted carnival character. The Ptuj Fine Arts
Award event has been marked with enticing prizes, scoring procedures for the evaluation of participating works, and canvas stamping at several locations across Slovenia. It has become a stepping stone towards the current art scene for a number of young artists, as the Young Artist Award often included a solo exhibition. The basic concept of Ex-tempore was creating a connection between arts and economy, since the prizes were provided by local businesses, which, in turn, have acquired a collection of quality artworks. Before the opening of the 12th Ex-Tempore Ptuj 2020, Vladimir Forbici commented, “The city of Ptuj has gained a lot with this international art award; among other things, the event has contributed an artistic spark to the Kurentovanje festival itself. Every year, a large number of artists signed up to the event and delivered high-quality pieces of art. Over the last nine years, the City Municipality of Ptuj has acquired an enviable collection of artworks by local and foreign artists. Ex-tempore should be further evolving in the direction that encourages participation of private companies, thus carving a path for arts into economy.” Ptuj's Ex-tempore offers artists a new creative challenge for reaching out to the themes pertaining to the rich ethnographic tradition of masquerading customs, carnival characters, and carnival festivities. In doing so, they connect themselves with Ptuj's mystical Kurentovanje festival, which is ruled by Kurent, a fuzzy demonic monster who makes noise to chase away winter and bring in springtime, fertility, and new life.
