Ptuj - središče slovenske vizualne scene / Ptuj - Slovenian center of visual art scene Sedemnajsta izdaja festivala sodobne umetnosti Art Stays bo v času od 5. do 12. julija 2019 ponovno prelevila Ptuj v slovensko središče vizualne scene. Odprli bomo 14 razstav, opravili več kot 10 pogovorov z umetniki in kustosi, si pogledali trilogijo izjemnih lmov enega največjih fotografov nas svetu Edwarda Burtynsykega in celo doživeli slovensko premiero njegovega najnovejšega lma Antropocen. Obenem bomo uživali ob koncertih, zvočnih performansih, mnogih delavnicah in drugih dogodkih; in vse to na izjemnih lokacijah starega mestnega jedra in okolice. Ni lepšega kot druženje ob vrhunski umetnosti!

In the period from 5 to 12 July 2019, the seventeenth edition of the Art Stays Contemporary Art Festival will again turn Ptuj into the Slovenian center of the visual art scene. We will open 14 exhibitions, conduct more than 10 conversations with artists and curators, watch an outstanding Flm trilogy by one of the greatest photographers in the world Edward Burtynsky, and even experience the Slovenian premiere of his latest lm Anthropocene. We will also enjoy concerts, sound performances, various workshops, and other events; and all this in the exceptional locations of Ptuj historic center and its surrounding area. What's better than hanging out alongside top fne art!

Festival sodobne umetnosti Art Stays že od leta 2003 prinaša na Ptuj in v okolico vrhunsko produkcijo domačih ter tujih umetnikov, od najperspektivnejših mladih umetnikov do velikih imen sodobne umetnosti, kot so Ai Weiwei, Yoko Ono, Monira Al Qadiri, Gilbert & George, Jake & Dinos Chapman... Spada med najpomembnejše predstavitve sodobne, predvsem likovne umetnosti v Sloveniji in v tem delu Evrope, ter je postal referenčni dogodek za številne mednarodne galerije, muzeje, fundacije in seveda umetnike. Tudi letos nas čakajo presežki iz zelo širokega spektra umetniških izrazov - od kiparstva, fotograje, slikarstva, instalacij do videa, lma, performansov in glasbe. Sedemnajsta izvedba festivala Art Stays z naslovom FUTURE - vizija sveta bo predstavila mednarodni izbor umetnikov, ki svoja raziskovanja posvečajo prihodnosti in z njimi odgovarjajo na vprašanje: Kaj nas čaka? The Art Stays Contemporary art festival has been bringing the best that Slovenian and foreign contemporary artists have to offer to Ptuj since 2003, having featured a number of promising young artists, as well as big names, such as Ai Weiwei, Yoko Ono, Monira Al Qadiri, Gilbert & George, Jake & Dinos Chapman... It is one of the most important festivals of contemporary ne art in Slovenia and in this part of Europe, and has become a reference event for many international galleries, museums, foundations and of course artists. Just like every year, we can look forward to exceptional artworks from a wide range of art forms - from sculpturing, photography, lm, and painting to art installations and performances, and music. The 17th edition of the Art Stays festival, with the title FUTURE - a Vision of the World, will feature international artists who explore the future and try to answer the question: What the future holds?

DOBRODOŠLI

Dobrodošli na Ptuju / Welcome to Ptuj Ptuj – zidana kronika na križišču cest, ki so povezovale sončno Italijo s prostranstvi Panonske nižine ter alpske doline s širjavami Balkana – začenja svoje prvo poglavje v davnini mlajše kamene dobe. Že ob nastanku mu je bila zaradi pomembne lege določena usoda, da je bil večkrat vpleten v zgodovinske dogodke evropskega pomena. Ta usoda je Ptuj, sicer naše najslikovitejše celinsko mesto, obdarila tudi z najbogatejšo dediščino preteklosti. Naravne danosti so povzročile, da je ob rečnem prehodu jantarske poti zrasla prometno, strateško in gospodarsko pomembna naselbina, ki je odigrala opazno zgodovinsko vlogo tako na področju politike in uprave kot na področju umetnosti in kulture. Ptuj, an architectural chronicle at the crossroads of sunny Italy and wide-spread Pannonian lowland, set between Alpine valleys and the vastness of Balkans, begins its story in the ancient times of the Later Stone Age. From the very beginning, the town’s strategic position has determined its fate, predicting that Ptuj would be involved several times in historical events of European importance. And that is why Ptuj, the most picturesque continental town in Slovenia, nowadays boasts the richest heritage of the past. A logical consequence of these exceptional natural features was the development of strategically and economically important settlement and one of the main arterial routes at the river crossing of the amber-road. The settlement often played a signicant historical role in the elds of politics and administration, as well as in the elds of arts and culture. (source: www.ptuj.info)

SONIČNI HORIZONT Poslušaj, a zakaj? / SONIC HORIZONT Listen but why? Zulkie Mahmod (SGP) Medtem ko se oziramo k prihodnosti in se sprašujemo, kaj nas čaka, ne moremo ignorirati naše sposobnosti, da prisluhnemo okolici in prostoru. Človeški um se pusti zlahka zapeljati, z izumom novih tehnologij pa se včasih izgubimo v samih sebi. Namesto da bi poslušali, le slišimo. Blokirali smo pomembna sporočila, podrobnosti, teksture in zvočne tone iz naše okolice. Vzemi premor in prisluhni. As we are anticipating and questioning what lies in the future, we cannot ignore our ability to listen to our surroundings and spaces. The human mind is easily distracted. With the invention of new technologies, sometimes we got lost in ourselves. Instead of listening, we only hear. NEMIRNE POKRAJINE / RESTLESS LANDSCAPES Olivo Barbieri, Andrea Botto, Silvia Camporesi (ITA) V sodelovanju s Fundacijo Francesco Fabbri predstavljamo Nemirne pokrajine (Paesaggi inquieti), razstavo, ki jo je kuriral Carlo Sala. Trije ciklusi predstavljenih del raziskujejo krhko sedanjost in negotovo prihodnost ter jo predstavijo v obliki sodobne krajine, zaznamovane s konikti med človekom in teritorijem, kjer se meja med resničnostjo in kcijo zdi zelo tanka.

In collaboration with the Francesco Fabbri Foundation we present Restless Landscapes (Paesaggi inquieti), an exhibition curated by Carlo Sala. The three cycles of exhibited works explore the fragile present and the uncertain future, narrated by means of a contemporary landscape marked by conict between man and territory, where reality and ction appear to be separated by a very thin line. The project Restless Landscapes_Future (Paesaggi inquieti_Future), curated by Alessandra Maccari and Carlo Sala, relates two interventions which deconstruct and analyze future-related imagery, thus proving that the former are carefully designed, proper narratives, the basic purpose of which is to communicate a certain idea of society. Čeprav manj podroben in realističen, je dvojnik podoben prav njemu. V odsevu obiskovalec prepozna samega sebe. A ko pogleda natančneje, odkrije nekaj nenavadnega. Njegovo telo, sestavljeno iz množice delcev, animirajo nevidne sile.

In interactive installation Narcisse, the visitor arrives and comes face to face with himself, his double. Although it is less detailed and realistic, his double looks exactly like him. The visitor recognizes himself in this refection. However, when he looks more closely, he discovers something strange. Composed of multitudes of particles, his body is animated by invisible forces. Številni prizori v Krasu prikličejo različne kraje iz naše realnosti, ki jih zaradi vrste razlogov ne moremo obiskati, in tako razkrivajo človeški odnos do širšega sveta. Karst is a multi-level virtual reality visual and sound experience/artwork that creates liminal spaces in between the representational and the theatrical, the limited and the multi-dimensional, and the abstract and the real for people to visit and experience. Multiple scenes in Karst reference a variety of places in our reality whose visitation is being limited because of various reasons, thus revealing human's relationship to the larger world. MED PEKLOM IN NEBOM / BETWEEN HELL AND SKY Gal Weinstein (ISR) Snow Yunxue Fu (CHN / USA) Costantino Ciervo (ITA) INTERNO3 (Manuel Frara) (ITA) DK (SLO) Upoštevanje kontrastov, povezanosti in podaljševanja kot elementov, ki izražajo prihodnost, so temeljni koncepti, ki stojijo za pričujočim artikuliranim in protislovnim kuratorskim ter razstavnim projektom. Razstava se odpre in razdeli na dve nadstropji in dve temi (nebo in pekel), pri tem pa obiskovalec med prečkanjem prostora in opazovanjem del pridobi spoznanja skozi lastne oči, sestavlja čas, delce in zaznave ter se poda na raziskovanje točke izginotja, daleč od človeških potreb in nasilja, ki spreminjajo in uničujejo njega samega in pokrajino.

Vsak od izbranih projektov in vsako od umetniških del obstaja onkraj lastne resničnosti; med prehajanjem skozi odstopanja in protislovja ustvarja dualen odnos in izpostavlja domnevno resničnost sveta ter njegovo iluzorno radikalnost. Observance of contrasts, connections and continuations as elements that express future, are the fundamental concepts behind the present articulated and contradictory curatorial and exhibition project. The exhibition opens and is divided into two oors and themes (sky and hell), whereby visitors, as they pass through the exhibition space and observe the works, gain insights based on looking through their own eyes; they compose time, parts and perceptions, and venture to explore the point of disappearance, far from human needs and violence, which change and destroy themselves and the landscape.

Each of the selected projects and art works exists beyond its own reality; as it shifts through deviations and contradictions, it creates a dual relationship and exposes a supposed reality of the world and its illusory radicalism. STRATIFIKACIJE / STRATIFICATIONS Toru Hamada (JPN) Toru Hamada, umetnik japonskega rodu, ki živi in ustvarja v Parizu in je nedvomno eden od protagonistov sveta mednarodne sodobne umetnosti, nam predstavlja projekt Stratikacije. Hamada nas z nežnostjo in krhkostjo, pa tudi energijo in napetostjo, značilno za njegova dela, opominja, da je umetnost tista, ki ji je bila dodeljena občutljiva naloga, da postane most med različnimi deležniki in nas pripelje nazaj k izvoru vseh stvari, od koder bomo lahko ponovno prebrali našo prihodnost.

Toru Hamada, Japanese-born artist who lives and works in Paris and is undoubtedly one of the protagonists in international contemporary art, presents his project entitled Stratications. He reminds us – by means of softness and fragility, but also energy and tension that are typical of his works – that art has become the one to which the delicate task has been assigned of becoming a bridge between different stakeholders, and bringing us back to the root of all things, from where we will be able to re-read our future. Ker prihodnost stoji na mladih in je od njih tudi odvisna, smo k sodelovanju povabili študente vizualnih smeri petih institucij iz Benetk, Ljubljane, Budimpešte in daljnega Xiana. Projekte, ki so bili pripravljeni prav za Ptuj, in projekte, ki bodo nastali na Ptuju, si bo možno ogledati v razstavišču Knjižnice I. Potrča Ptuj, na drugih razstaviščih ter različnih lokacijah starega mestnega jedra. Videli bomo javne intervencije, instalacije, fotograje, kipe in še marsikaj drugega, vse prežeto z energijo mladih, perspektivnih in v prihodnost zazrtih umetnikov z vseh koncev. Since the future depends and stands on young people, we invited students of visual arts of ve institutions from Venice, Ljubljana, Budapest and faraway Xi'an. The projects that were prepared for Ptuj and the projects that will be created in Ptuj will be on display at the exhibition hall of the Ptuj library and in other exhibition venues, as well as in various locations of town's historic center. There will be public interventions, installations, photographs, sculptures, and much more, all imbued with the energy of young, prospective, and future-oriented artists from all over the world.

A large spatial installation, powered by Slovenian nature, will, together with the wind, change its color and shape and thus illustrate the breath of nature. Zelo raznolik geografski izvor izbranih umetnikov nam podaja globalno sliko razmišljanj o prihodnosti, katerih skupna nit je ta, da izhajajo iz velikih sprememb človeštva v času prve in druge industrijske revolucije ter še pred dognanji zike in astronomije v 16. stoletju. The ambitious project of the international magazine / platform for photography PHROOM, in the form of a public intervention in the old town center, puts in view a selection of ten international photographers who question the future in their work. A very diverse geographical background of selected artists gives us a global picture of the thinking about the future; their reections share the common thread of drawing from the great changes in humanity during the First and Second Industrial Revolution, and even before the discoveries of physics and astronomy in the 16th century.

Through at rst glance unreasoned moving pictures, the selection of short video works, mainly by Hungarian artists, shows us the dark side of the future, highlighting the fact that the future of the world is only a logical consequence of the natural order and interdependence between all elements of nature.

Android je skupinska razstava, ki se posveča pojavitvam telesa v sodobnih prizorih: živo, objektivizirano, mutirano in posredovano. Toda katero telo? Govorimo o področju znanstvenega opazovanja, manipulacije, prisvajanja zakonov njegovega delovanja? Ali o razdeljenem, odobrenem in normaliziranem segmentu? Je živeče in živo, meseno, ki se med opazovanjem in občutenjem počuti sprejetega v svetu? Ali pa je razdrobljeno? Kakšna je torej danes prihodnost človeškega telesa? Telo, osrednji element del štirih mednarodnih umetnikov, ki se med seboj zelo razlikujejo, tako po poreklu kot umetniškem raziskovanju, preoblikuje naše predstave o telesnosti in materiji; morda je izgubilo svojo identiteto in postalo gledališče eksperimentalne človeške geograje, ki nosi sledi našega časa. Človek, nagnjen k spreminjanju svojega videza, raste zaradi znanstvenih procesov; premika se v smer post-človeškosti, izprašuje identiteto in išče novo ravnotežje med razumskimi in čustvenimi vzgibi. Android is a collective exhibition, dedicated to the irruption of a body in the contemporary scene: lived, objectied, mutant, and disseminated. But which body is it? Is it a eld of scientic observation, manipulation, appropriation of the laws of its operation? Or is it the sectioned, approved, and normalized section? Is it the lived and living one, carnal that in its seeing and feeling is constituted in the world? Or is it the fragmented one? What then is the future of the human body today? The body staged through the work of four international artists who are very different from each other – both in terms of their background and artistic research – reshapes our idea of physicality and matter; it has perhaps lost its identity and has become the theater of an experimental human geography which bears the traces of our times. Man, prone to the modication of his appearance, increases thanks to the processes of science; he moves towards the post-human, questioning the identity and searching for a new balance between the impulses of reason and feelings.

A group of artists puts their work into a new context and tries to create communication between individual works in the gallery. Burtynsky ustvarja velikoformatne fotograje "izdelanih krajin" – kamnolomov, obratov za recikliranje, tovarn, rudnikov, jezov. Fotograra materiale in ruševine civilizacij, vendar tako, da jih ljudje opisujejo kot »dih jemajoče« ali »čudovite«; s tem odpira različna vprašanja o etiki in estetiki, ne da bi nanje ponudil jasen odgovor. Manufactured Landscapes is a feature length documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of 'manufactured landscapes' – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization's materials and debris, but in a way people describe as "stunning" or "beautiful," and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them. The lm follows Burtynsky to China as he travels the country photographing the evidence and effects of that country's massive industrial revolution.

This ethno jazz quartet's music draws inuence from the tradition of American jazz culture, the elements of European classical music, as well as from the inuences of popular and folk culture from the southern part of Europe. Very sensitive communication and music playing by four wellsynchronized musicians convince even the most demanding and wide-ranging listeners.

Zulkie Mahmod is one of Singapore's leading sound artists. ZUL has been at the forefront of a generation of sound-media artists in Singapore's contemporary art development. ZUL represented Singapore with a Sound Art Performance at the Ogaki Biennale in 2006, and was Singapore's rst sound artist with a full-on sound sculpture at the Singapore Pavilion of the 52nd Venice Biennale 2007.

Poletna akademija / Summer Academy Poletna akademija sodobne umetnosti zajema bogat program delavnic za otroke in odrasle ter sklop predavanj in predstavitev umetnikov, kustosov in drugih strokovnjakov s področja sodobne umetnosti. Kot vsako leto v sodelovanju s Centrom interesnih dejavnosti Ptuj organiziramo delavnice za otroke in najstnike, ki potekajo vsak dan festivala. Letos bodo posvečene prihodnosti. Seveda ne bo manjkal niti Giancarlo Busato iz Umetniške gračne delavnice iz italijanske Vicenze, s katerim bodo otroci in odrasli ustvarjali grako v globokem tisku in svoja dela tudi natisnili na čisto pravi gračni »stiskalnici«. The Contemporary Art Summer Academy incorporates an ample program of workshops for children and adults, as well as a series of lectures and presentations by artists, curators and other professionals from the eld of modern art. Just like every year, there will be workshops for children and teenagers on a daily basis, carried out in co-organization with CID Ptuj (Center of free-time activities Ptuj). As this year's main topic is the Future, the majority of workshops will focus on our visions of the future. Giancarlo Busato from Vicenza's Busato Printing Studios will join us once again; participants of his printing workshop will have an opportunity to create graphics with gravure printing and then print out their works on a genuine graphic press.

DOMAČE / HOME-MADE Za pogostitve smo se obrnili k lokalnim proizvajalcem, biološkim kmetijam in drugim ponudnikom domače hrane. Za vsakogar se bo našlo kaj dobrega; tako za tiste, ki iščejo pristno slovensko hrano, kot tudi za bolj izbirčne. Še posebej pazljivi smo bili pri izbiri vinarjev, ki bodo pospremili likovna dela. Z nami bo naš tradicionalni spremljevalec, Vinarstvo Turčan, v družbi Ptujske Kleti in vin Kobal. Iz tujine ponovno prihaja vinska klet Tonnelo (Montorso Vicentino), ki se ji bodo pridružila izbrana vina iz Francije in Španije. The catering services were entrusted to local producers, organic farms and other providers of home-made food. Everyone is in for a treat, whether you wish to indulge in avors of authentic Slovenian cuisine, or you are a more picky eater. We were particularly careful when choosing winemakers to complement artworks. Our traditional companion Winery Turčan will be joined by renowned Ptuj winemakers Ptujska Klet and Kobal. From abroad, the Tonnelo wine cellar from Montorso Vicentino returns, together with a ne wine selection from France and Spain.
