ART STAYS, 10th Festival of Contemporary Art 2003 - 2012 (Jernej Forbici, Art Director) The ART STAYS International Festival of Contemporary Art, one of the most important contemporary art festivals in Europe, is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will bring together contemporary, mainly visual artists from all over the world. This year's festival will be held under the slogan DISPLAY (screen/show!). The word display has many meanings, but all of them fit perfectly with the aim of the festival. It is a shopwindow, a space, and a dialogue that we opened with many artists who will come to Ptuj to display their work, carry out a performance, or be a part of our artist in residence programme to get creative in the oldest town in Slovenia. In the year when the Art Stays festival is part of the European Capital of Culture, some of the greatest names of the contemporary art scene will be hosted: Venice Biennale Golden Lion Award winner in 2005, Regina Jose Galindo from Guatemala, Indian artist Gigi Scaria, presented in the Indian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011, established Polish artist Lech Majewski, Tonis Saadoja from Estonia, one of the most important Fluxus (celebrating its 50th anniversary) artists, Yoko Ono, Ilona Nemeth from Slovakia, Chilean artists Fernando Prats and Ivan Navarro, Hungarian artists Laszlo Laszlo Revesz and Eike Berg, German-Kenyan couple IngridMwangiRobertHutter, one of the most important Vietnamese artists Tiffany Chung, Raymundo Sesma from Mexico, Lateefa Bint Maktoum from United Arab Emirates, as well as younger, emerging artists such as Marco Bernardi, Roberto Fassone, and Elena Mazzi from Italy, Kinki Texas and Christiane Draffehn from Germany, Zoie So from Hong Kong, Jose Molina from Spain, Kensuke Koike from Japan, Marlon de Azambuja from Brazil, Cyryl Zakrzewski from Poland and Slovenian artists such as son:DA and Dušan Kirbiš. The festival will also host daily lectures by artists and curators, as well as workshops as part of the Summer Academy that will take place during the festival. The program consists of presentations of contemporary art from 26 European countries and six other continents and special projects, such as the presentation of installations by European academies, light art installations and performances, live media sets by Italian artists, musical performances by artists from the U.S., Germany and Italy, everyday DJ sessions and much more. A group of curators, in collaboration with the leading organizations and galleries from around the world, has produced a festival that reaffirms the important role played by Art Stays in the European art scene.

The exhibition was prepared in collaboration with prominent European public and private institutions, and it presents a rich selection of artworks by over forty important European artists: from the great Slovakian artist Ilona Nemeth to the great Polish video artist Lech Majewski, from renowned Estonian Tonis Saadoja to younger, but equally important artists, such as Marco Bernardi from Italy, Kinki Texas from Germany, and Jose Molina from Spain. ASIA The great diversity of the Asian continent is also evident in its contemporary art scene. Thus, we have invited artists from the Middle and Far East – the festival presents a selection of ten artists with very different approaches to contemporary art. The exhibition will feature installations by two Vietnamese artists, Tiffany Chung and Trong Gia Nguyen, photographs by Chinese artist Chen Nong, very interesting works by two female Arab artists from the United Arab Emirates, Hind Bin Demaithan and Maitha Demithan, videos by India's representative at last year's Venice Biennale Gigi Scaria, works by Japanese artist Kensuke Koike, and the European premiere of the IndianSingaporean-Australian theatrical production Infinite Saree, Biological Arts Theatre. The presentation of the Asian Pavilion will be completed with a light art performance by Chinese artist Zoie So. ARTISTS: Chen Nong (China), Tiffany Chung (Vietnam), Hind Bin Demaithan (UAE), Kensuke Koike (Japan), Maitha Demithan (UAE), Trong Gia Nguyen (Vietnam), INFINITE SAREE Biological Arts Theatre / S. Chandrasekaran, Gary Cass, Santha Bhaskar, Madhura Nayak (Singapore, Australia, India), Gigi Scaria (India)

SOUTH AMERICA South American art is famous for its politically and socially critical artists. One of the most important projects of this year's festival has emerged under the leadership of curator Antonio Arevalo. Probably one of the most important representatives of performance art of the 21st century Regina Jose Galindo, winner of the Golden Lion at the 51st Venice Biennale, will present her new performance for the first time in Europe. Often rewarded Chilean artist Ivan Navarro is presenting one of his recent light installations, Ronald Moran and Marlon de Azambuja will prepare a spatial installation, Maria Rosa Jijon, Felipe Aguila, and Gianfranco Foschino will create new artistic projects during their residence in Ptuj. The exhibition entitled Latin America between Identity and Mask will also feature works by Dario Escobar, Luis Gonzalez Palma, David Perez Karmadavis, Priscila Monge, Ishmael Randall Weeks, and Enrique Zamudio. ARTISTS: Felipe Aguila (Chile), Marlon de Azambuja (Brazil), Dario Escobar (Guatemala), Gianfranco Foschino (Chile), Regina Jose Galindo (Guatemala), Luis Gonzales Palma (Argentina - Guatemala), Maria Rosa Jijon (Ecuador), David Perez Karmadavis (Dominican Republic), Priscila Monge (Costa Rica), Ronald Moran (El Salvador), Carlos Motta (Colombia), Ivan Navarro (Chile), Ishmael Randall Weeks (Peru), Enrique Zamudio (Chile) INTERVIEW WITH THE CURATOR ANTONIO AREVALO: The idea and purpose of the project is highlighted in an interview with the curator, which was conducted last fall. Marika Vicari: Art Stays is multidisciplinary and international, we might say a bit like your story. The first question is, therefore, almost obligatory. Your cultural stimulus is amplified by the fact that you were born in Santiago, Chile but you live and work in Rome, Italy. Tell me, which atmosphere do you breathe in these large cities, where biennials and international exhibitions of art are daily events? Antonio Arevalo: I have always lived in big cities, mostly capital cities, since I was a child, and it is here that contradictions emerge today giving me a reason to plan my own personal program. I come

[7]

from a country that has experienced social democracy, a fascist coup, freedom from that nightmare through the ballot box, and neoliberal capitalist democracy. I now live in Rome, where the classical hardly leaves any room for new ideas; but perhaps this experience, the sense of belonging, the places where one lives, are those that shape the life experiences that each one of us carries with him wherever he goes, wherever he is, on his journey from one place to another. It makes you look at reality in a different way and makes you able to show all this. I must add something that has always made me admire the father of curators Harald Szeemann, the poetry that predisposes you to be free and to come forward. M. V.: Art Stays has been a „window display“ dedicated to contemporary art for years, presenting the festival, the artists' residency, partnerships with artists, curators, major projects and most recently the summer academy. It has been defined as a unique and prominent art project for the Capital of culture 2012. In regard to this, what do you think - what is the potential significance of Art Stays, especially in comparison with other similar events scattered throughout Europe? A. A.: To become Capital of Culture 2012 is a great opportunity not only for the artists who participate but also for young people and for those who will enjoy its fruits. It's an award for the city and its population. Facing an ambitious challenge, the important issue is to make a collective effort, and true success is to know how to work side by side: a true team effort that demonstrates that when there is unity and a strong project, as in this case, we arrive at the finish line victorious. I immediately compare it to Manifesta, a young and nomadic biennial, able to provoke the most contemporary energies. M. V.: In the last months as well as in previous events, you have been working on different projects with young and established artists from different countries. You've also been invited to the Venice Biennale as a curator several times. Taking this into account, what is your position regarding the invitation to present Latin American art for the first time in Ptuj? A. A.: In Latin America an artistic movement has emerged in recent years that has brought great creative innovation in contemporary art: besides the recognition received by the expert critics, it represents an opportunity to get closer to the new realities of a region that has experienced profound social, political and cultural changes. The language of these artists has a very important role regarding the world of image and raises important issues around the concepts of identity, race, class, religion, gender and sexuality. Experimentation and research of new languages, the reviewing of recent and ancestral memories are producing the best key to understanding that reality. Here, I'm interested in bringing out this pluralism, the extreme vitality of this visual research which is part of a wider project, let's say a structured strategy: the base is the belief that the language of Latin American countries pays attention to and is aware of its important role in the world of images. M. V.: Looking at your project, you seem interested in the dialogue between different artistic fields and the migration of forms. Which project will you present at the 10th Art Stays? What are the differences and continuity with other projects that you nurture or have attended? Why do you think it's important to involve the city in the festival events? What is the role of the curator in the artist's creative process? What are your future projects?

[8]

A. A.: In today's multi-ethnic perspective, where every movement produces a mix, each artist can make use of his own genetic makeup, change and invent his own homeland, affect the meaning and the imagination, seek to review and combine different iconographies and national identities. This is the project in which I have been involved lately and which I want to pursue. Born as „Motion of a Nation“, I have called artists from different backgrounds and nationalities to depict the story of the world, its meaning, and why not, the evils and distortions, with different techniques and materials, from photography to drawing, from painting to image synthesis and video, intertwining high knowledge and pop language, history and news, cartoons and poetry, in a dense network of references and quotations which impels one, with surprising and often ironic gamble, not to concede anything to the boundary between sentimental biography and sociological analysis, literary memory and technological experimentation.

NORTH AMERICA You will be surprised by the diversity of artists representing contemporary North American art. The exhibition will feature works by American artist Yoko Ono, one of the most important representatives of the Fluxus movement, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year; socially conscious projects by Mexican artist Raymundo Sesma and Canadian artists Janet Belotto, Karen Oresmus (installations and video), and Ben Darrah (paintings); intriguing photographs by American photographer Dean Dempsey, and sculptures by American-Swedish sculptor Jill Höjeborg. We will also be hosting an audiovisual performance that is being prepared by American artist Nadia Buyse in collaboration with German performer Noisy Pig. ARTISTS: Janet Belotto (Canada), Nadia Buyse (USA), Ben Darrah (Canada), Dean Dempsey (USA), Jill Höjeberg (USA-Sweden), Karen Oremus (Canada), Yoko Ono (USA), Raymundo Sesma (Mexico)

ANTARCTICA Art Stays' ambitious plan to present art from all of Earth's continents has come to life with the presentation of Antarctica, a continent that is extraordinary in all respects. Chilean-born artist Fernando Prats has carried out many of his artistic interventions in Antarctica, the most famous among them being Gran Sur, which was also presented in the Chilean pavilion at last year's Venice Biennale. At the Art Stays festival, Prats will present his work entitled El nacimiento del mundo II (1925–2011), which is a homage to Joan Miró and his painting. It consists of an action that Prats did in the Antarctic, based on Joan Miró's Dibujo preparatorio de pintura (El nacimiento del mundo), 1925 (pencil graphite on paper, 26.4 x 20 cm). It's all about an action of conquest in the polar emptiness, that consists of moving the lines that form Joan Miró's Dibujo preparatorio de pintura (El nacimiento del mundo), 1925 to the most extreme territory of the planet. ARTIST: Fernando Prats (Chile)

AUSTRALIA We have entrusted a single artist with representing the Australian continent. The diversity of Donna Franklin's work is amazing, as it moves from video and photography to performance and installation. The festival will feature a composition made up of various artistic approaches, all stemming from biology, as the artist's works are created with the help of living nature. ARTIST: Donna Franklin (Australia)

50° FLUXUS - YOKO ONO To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Fluxus, Art Stays is honoured to announce its collaboration with Archivio Bonotto, a contemporary institution dedicated to archiving Fluxus Art. We present Skyladders, an artwork by Yoko Ono, originally dedicated to John Lennon in 1968. Created to be performed in three different versions in a party-like atmosphere with ladies with parasols and binoculars and gentlemen with top hats and monocles, the work and its performance today are presented in accordance with the conceptual instructions and with the presence of various ladders that create a forest and pierce the sky. Yoko Ono frequently invites people to participate in an act involving imagination, whether in her instructional pieces or in her conceptual works of art.

LIGHT ART We are continuing our cooperation with the Austrian biennial of light art (Light Art Biennial) this year. We will be hosting artists such as Manfred Kielnhofer, Christoph Luckeneder, and Mounty R. P. Zentara from Austria, who will be joined by Chinese artist Zoie So with her performance entitled LSD ||| LIQUID SOAP DISPLAY. ARTISTS: Manfred Kielnhofer (Avstrija / Austria), Christoph Luckeneder (Avstrija / Austria), Zoie So (Kitajska / China), Mounty R.P. Zentara (Avstrija / Austria)

THE AREA OF BUSTLE - LIVE MEDIA FROM VENICE The artists that have been invited to Ptuj represent an extensive combination of various approaches to live media performances. Claudio Roccheti (sound) and Manuel Frara/interno3 (video) are developing a “set” that covers areas between the two extremes of the sonic and visual world. The environment is taken over by the continuous, constant hum and noise that Roccheti creates. Frara manipulates the sound with condenser microphones and translates it in real time into essential images of landscapes, made up of pixels and geometric lines. Riccardo Piovesan (sound) and Alessandro Sgarbi (video) are moving on parallel coordinates that intersect when Piovesan's cold, surgical beat triggers a reinforcement of the visual spectrum in the light visions of Alessandro Sgarbi. The overall result is extremely attractive and hypnotic movement, in which the frequency of light is interrupted by moments of complete darkness. Andrea Cazzagon combines theoretical reflection on the nature of new spaces for art with the ability of improvisation, creating an eclectic and diverse production. His works and research therefore meet [10]

the ephemeral realm and feed on an elegant attitude towards punk, which gives the artist the opportunity to toy with the context of his performance, taking advantage of that immaterial instance of a work of art that has influenced art movements in the 20th century, starting with the Fluxus movement. (Tommaso Zannini) ARTISTS: Claudio Rocchetti (sound), Manuel Frara/interno3 (video), Riccardo Piovesan (sound), Alessandro Sgarbi (video), Andrea Cazzagon

SUMMER ACADEMY The fourth consecutive Summer Academy of Contemporary Art will reveal a number of views on contemporary art. Daily talks with artists, curators, and professors from international institutions and universities will acquaint you with the sometimes complicated world of contemporary art. The talks will be conducted in a relaxed atmosphere on the main stage in Slovenski trg Square. On the weekends, the talks will be supplemented by workshops where you will be able to create with artists such as Jakob Tolstrup from Denmark and Cyryl Zakrzewski from Poland, and with Laszlo Laszlo Revesz, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. We have also prepared a variety of creative workshops for children in collaboration with the Centre for Free Time Activities Ptuj.

THE RADIANT CITY "The Radiant City – A Public Art Project" workshop by Maria Campitelli and MassimoPremuda, Gruppo78 – International Contemporary Art, Trieste. The workshop consists of mapping: surveying public or private sites that can be defined as“neglected places”. The idea of the project is to plan art interventions and, finally, implement some planned interventions. The presentation of the workshop and mapping will start at the beginning of the festival and end at the end of August, when the results will be discussed and plans made for interventions during the 2013 Art Stays festival.

GRAFITTI STREET ATTACK Graffiti will emerge in the streets of Ptuj during the festival. When, where, how, and who will be creating them will remain a mystery for the time being. We invite you to take a stroll through the city in search of graffiti.
