Ji Woo, Lee 이지우 Artist’s Statement My artistic journey begins with “In Search of Another Self.” Born under the stars of Gemini (The Twins), perhaps it was my destiny to continuously study the two worlds of consciousness and sub-consciousness and express them in my art work. Years of work on “In Search of Another Self” culminated with self-portraits expressing inner soul as well as outer appearance, and the self-portraits were followed by paintings of flowers. Flowers, among all the natural wonders, are the most beautiful and yet shorter lived than most. In so many ways, flowers are like humans. The fleeting and thus more enchanting beauties of flowers are laid a petal by petal on my heart spread on canvas. The flowers on the canvas become another me. I too am a fleeting beauty. I am not the same Ji Woo that I was yesterday and will not be the same tomorrow. Experts can tell much about an artist from her paintings. They should be able to know I am ambidextrous from the brush strokes. Some may even guess correctly where I have lived and worked. The vibrant colors come from Spain and Brazil, where I began my professional work. My lines, however, have traces of Oriental ink-and-wash paintings from my Asian meditative calligraphy training. In other words, my paintings are expressions of my two different egos from the past, one Eastern and the other Western. The most recent works, “A series of moments,” have a special meaning to me as I am still “In search of Another Self.” Because my strokes are meditative, they are often drawn out from my subconscious. Furthermore, the mixed medium I have used continues to change shape for many days long after I finish my part of creation, before it finally solidifies. More often than not, they end up quite different from my original intentions. It is just like our life; few things end up the way that we expect. So many times the colors get mixed up together by themselves or even run off the canvas onto the floor. Sometimes, however, the paintings greet me as naturally changed wonderful shapes more beautiful than I have ever expected. The future is always uncertain, and every morning my heart still beats for what awaits me behind the door of my studio. Bibliography Ji Woo Lee was born in Seoul, Korea. She graduated from College of Fine Arts at Seoul Women’s University. She began art work in Barcelona and has continued on in Sao Paolo, Los Angeles, and now back in Seoul.
