Derwen College: stamp of approval from leading autism charity
Derwen College, has been awarded with world-wide autism accreditation which demonstrates the college’s commitment to supporting autistic students. The specialist further education college was presented with the official accreditation certificate from the National Autistic Society (NAS) at an official ceremony on 7 November.
Almost half of students at the specialist further education college for residential and day students are autistic. So, to meet the NAS high benchmark is hugely significant. Guests at the celebration included Shropshire Lord-Lieutenant Anna Turner, Shropshire Deputy-Lieutenant Mandy Thorn, Oswestry Deputy Mayor Olly Rose, and Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council Chair Craig Emery. Also attending were Derwen College Chair of Governors K Kimber, Head of Quality Dawn Roberts, Derwen Autism Advisor Helen Evans, and members of the college’s Student Union Board.
The College was particularly happy with survey feedback from autistic students. More than 30 were surveyed ahead of the assessment team visit, and they unanimously said they were happy at College. Some strengths highlighted by students included the chance to meet with friends, the work experience opportunities and the support from staff. One student simply said, “I love it here”.

Community-minded Oswestry knitters launch defibrillator fund-raising project
A group of Oswestry communityminded knitters have started a new fund-raising project for a defibrillator to be sited at the top of Hampton Rise in Oswestry. This will be available for Hampton Rise, High Fawr and the surrounding roads.
Angie Mills from The Crafty Knitters said, “We need to raise £2,500 to cover the cost of the defibrillator, installation and maintenance.
“Oswestry Town Council have kindly agreed that we can mount this on a lamp post and power the heated box. We have applied for a grant from British Heart Foundation who will hopefully donate £600 towards our target.
“Defibrillators save lives, they are very easy to use and tell you what to do. A simple 15-minute online training course is available at www.bhf.org. uk. After calling 999 and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using a defibrillator is the best way to increase the chances of someone surviving a cardiac arrest.
“Over the next few months fundraising events will take place. Our first event will be a Crafty Knitters stall on Saturday 26 November from 9am at the Bailey Head. The stall will be selling a number of different items such as cuddly toys, jigsaws, knitted items and Christmas decorations.
“If anyone would like to make a donation towards our community defibrillator, please get in touch with Angie and Barry Mills at 23 Hampton Rise, Oswestry 01691 650147.”
Cambrian Railway scoops prestigious national award from the British Museum
A disused and derelict North Shropshire railway line brought back to life after 50 years has scooped a prestigious national award for volunteer excellence from the British Museum.
Cambrian Heritage Railways (CHR) volunteer team have been named as winners of the 2021 Marsh Award for Volunteers in Museum Learning Nationally as well as winners for the West Midlands region. The winners were recently invited to a reception at the British Museum in London to receive their award.
The Marsh Awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of people who are committed to social, cultural and environmental causes. The Awards are run in partnership with the British Museum and recognise the best
and most innovative ways in which volunteers engage the public with collections and projects.
Cambrian Heritage Railways (CHR) volunteers came together to complete a ten-year aspiration to return their local railway. They worked tirelessly to clear vegetation and rebuild the crumbling infrastructure in order to open a heritage railway from Oswestry to Weston Wharf in April 2022. Installing two miles of new track and a station at Weston Wharf has since enabled CHR to become the latest tourist attraction in Shropshire.
Speaking about the award, CHR Chairman, Rob Williams said: “We are all delighted the enormous hard work of our volunteers to re-open the railway has been recognised at a regional and national level.
“Cambrian Heritage Railways has had a fantastic first season of operation since we opened in April. I think it can only be good for the local economy and tourism to have an award-winning heritage railway that people want to come and visit.”
CHR has recently announced it is running Santa Specials on specific dates in November and December. For more details and pre-booking, please see www.Cambrianrailways.com.

Oswestry North Pole Toy Drive
This year, a new initiative has been set up by local Katie Millard – the Oswestry North Pole Toy Drive. The toy drive will be collecting new toys for distribution to local families who are struggling with the Christmas period looming. Families can sign up by registering via email or phone with no questions asked and everything is confidential.
When asked, why she felt it important to set this up, Katie explained, “With the rising cost of living, lots of families will be struggling who maybe haven’t before. Families can self-refer to the scheme whether or not they’re already in touch with other agencies.”
In August this year, the Office for National Statistics reported, ‘Around 9 in 10 (89%) adults in Great Britain continue to report that their cost of living has increased, equal to around 46 million people,’ and ‘Nearly 6 in 10 people who have seen their cost-of-living rise, cut spending on nonessentials.’
With this in mind, you can understand why things like gifts for children are pushed to the bottom of the list because heating and food are just critical, especially during the winter months as we spend more time inside.
Having a toy from Santa or Mum and Dad can really make a child’s Christmas special and there are now a few drop off points in Oswestry for donations to be given. “Businesses have also come on board,” said Katie, “Arla staff are collecting, Zest Ladies Gym are asking members to drop off toys there, along with HSBC UK Oswestry branch.”
You can bring new toys to the following drop-off points:
Osnosh
Oswarm Stall – 19 November, 3 December
Liar Liar coffee shop
HSBC Bank Morrisons
The Works – buy a gift at the checkout
Arla – staff donations
Zest Ladies Gym – members donations
Katie has also set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money to purchase toys for any age groups that may be short of gifts once collections are complete and also to purchase wrapping materials.
“I’m doing this because I was so fed up hearing all the cost-of-living doom and gloom and thinking how many families were going to struggle this year. I just wanted to help,” Katie explained.
“We need toys for newborns up to 18 years. We’ve had a lot of gifts for girls, so some for boys are needed. All the toys will be distributed by volunteers to make sure they get to the families.”
To donate to help with the purchase of more gifts and materials, visit https://gofund.me/ b916b5f0 or search for Oswestry North Pole Toy Drive at www.gofundme.com
To register as a family who would like to receive this support, email katiemorda@gmail.com or call/ message 07912 435221. All personal information and conversations will be dealt with confidentially.

Oh yes, this one’s a corker! The Oswestry Christmas Video launches in mid-November, and we’re excited to shout out Oswestry’s message of a fabulous place to shop, visit, eat, drink, live and work in, to audiences far and wide! We want to give our town’s footfall a welcome boost over the Christmas period and into 2023, supporting all our businesses, while proudly promoting the magic and warmth of Oswestry. The Oswestry BID Ballot Result
In other news, an independently run ballot overseen by Civica, the UK’s leading provider of election services, took place from 6 October to 3 November to decide on a second term for Oswestry BID (Business Improvement District). In order for a positive ballot result, two tests needed to be satisfied:
1. A simple majority by number of those voting must be in favour, and;
2. Those voting in favour must represent the majority of rateable value of those voting.
A total of 151 votes were cast in the ballot with 60% in favour by number, and 62% in favour by rateable value. The result of ballot was therefore positive and so Oswestry BID will continue for a second five-year term commencing 1 April 2023.
BID Chair, Ian Follington, said, “The BID Team, the Board and I are all naturally delighted with the positive ballot result and wish to thank our Levy Payers for their vote of confidence in Oswestry BID.”
“We are all proud of what Oswestry BID has been able to achieve over the past four and a half years and would like to thank our partners and everybody who has been part of that achievement for their hard work and dedication. I would particularly like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the BID Team and the strong support we have received from both Shropshire Council and Oswestry Town Council.”
“The focus will now be to deliver the second term Business Plan over the next five years, building on the positive achievements and strong relationships already formed.”
“Finally, I would like to wish all of our Levy Payers all the best and every success in these troubled economic times and please be assured of our continued best efforts on your behalf for the next five years.”

HOW TO HELP YOUR PETS SURVIVE CHRISTMAS
Christmas is coming and, while it can be a time of fun and celebrations, for many pets it’s a living nightmare! Tranquillity and calm routines are replaced by loud noises, decorations and strange objects, flashing lights, excitable children, increased household anxiety etc, not to mention forbidden tempting foods and being usurped from the cosy chair by an invasion of strangers in the house!
It can be stressful for pets and, as a responsible pet own, it is your role to make the festive period as stressless as possible.
Planning ahead will help. Create a safe space for your pets, “out of the way” e.g., under the bed or in the utility room where your pet can retreat if it chooses. It is helpful to introduce this “safe space” in advance of Christmas so that your pet has a chance to get used to it and feel settled.
Avoid air fresheners and scented candles which can emit harmful toxins and cause stress within your pets. Try NATURAL scents such as baked orange slices, dry rose petals, cloves and fresh herbs around the home.
If the family adopt different routines over this period, try to be as consistent as possible with your pet. They won’t understand why dinner is three hours late and could resort to chewing skirting boards or abandoned presents as an alternative!
Do your utmost to keep the following out of reach of four paws as they can be very harmful!
BATTERIES, CHOCOLATE, GRAPES AND DRIED FRUITS, CHRISTMAS PUDDING, MEAT FAT, ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER XYILITOL. Other dangers include HOLLY, IVY, POINSETTIA, MISTLETOE which can all upset the tummy. CANDLES, PAPER, DECORATIONS and SILICA GEL which, if eaten, may cause choking or blocking.
A tip is to have some POWDERED MILK THISTLE at hand. A teaspoon full will help detox any overindulgence and stress hormones in you and your pet!
Have a safe and happy celebration.

Local Musician in Bridgerton
Local singer-songwriter Julius Eastwood has had a whirlwind of a year – fresh out of graduating from University in March he has recorded his debut EP, been a featured musician in Bridgerton season 2, and is now releasing self-written music which was recently played by BBC Radio Shropshire.
Julius released his new single Borderlines in September. Described by BBC Radio’s Michaela Wylde as a ‘gorgeous tune’, the alt-pop ballad has amassed over 2000 streams in its first 2 weeks on Spotify and now features on BBC Introducing. Borderlines is a story about home – it explores Julius’ life growing up on the border between Wales and England, the history of the area, and how this environment has shaped his perspective. He wrote the song after moving to London to study music - the lyrics convey a universal message about how our relationship to home changes once we’ve left. The song comes from a place of nostalgia and explores themes of love, pain and gratitude.
Borderlines combines traditional and contemporary instrumentation to reflect the culture of the area. Julius’ Welsh roots are a major source of inspiration for the song; he drew on its rich history to incorporate a Celtic inspired beat, creating a cinematic feel. The song is a must listen for anyone from the area.
His upbringing and life experience positions him as an artist with a fresh perspective. From a small village on the Shropshire-Powys border, Julius comes from a workingclass family, so is very conscious of identity and class. This has informed the lyrical themes of his music – from politics to identity and everything in between. Growing up on the borderline has shaped his view of the world and is at the very core of his new single - ‘it’s something I continue to exploreI’ve watched my music & lyrics develop alongside it’.
Julius is best described as an alt-pop singer and songwriter. He is a classically trained saxophonist, but
since moving into contemporary music he has also become a self-taught pianist and vocalist. Julius’ work has been compared to artists such as Declan McKenna and Nick Cave. His musical influences range from contemporary artists like Marina, Tom Odell and Lana Del Rey, to artists that were played by his parents as a childZero 7, Fleetwood Mac and Eagles.
Julius moved to London in 2018 to study music at University, where he graduated. His debut single, Westminster’s on Fire was selected as Track of the Week by BIMM Online.
In an exciting turn of events, Julius got the opportunity to play the trumpet on season two of Netflix’s Bridgerton, released earlier this year. Donning a powdered wig and a red-tailed coat, he got to work on one of the largest TV shows as his first job in music. He found the whole experience fantastic, saying, “The ballroom stage was magical, like no set I’ve ever been on before.” He went on to say that the cast and crew were incredible, and he particularly enjoyed getting into costume every morning. What a fantastic opportunity for local talent!
Julius recently announced that his debut EP will be coming out early next year – he has told us that it includes four brand new songs and features an exciting shift in genre. The songs are introspective and focus on the idea of personal transformation. This informed his production choices, “I want the songs to exist in an ethereal soundscape; this EP is inspired by producers like William Orbit and acts such as Moby and The Verve.” Julius’ work so far has definitely established himself as an artist to watch, and we can’t wait to hear his upcoming EP.
You can follow his music journey on social media @julius.eastwood on TikTok and Instagram. You can also listen to his first two singles, available on all music platforms.
Christmas is the perfect time to have a bit of fun with your make-up. Try e.l.f.’s Liquid Glitter Eyeshadows. They’re easy to apply, quick drying, non-sticky and just £6 each at www.elfcosmetics. co.uk. Follow with a waterproof mascara such as MAC’s In Extreme Dimension Waterproof Mascara (£24).
If you can’t go all out with your make-up at Christmas, when can you?
First off, you’ll want to get your base right. This takes a bit of preparation. Ideally, you’ll want to exfoliate and apply a face mask the day before each celebration. Central heating is very drying, so use an extra rich moisturiser before bed to boost hydration.
On the day, you’ll want a plumping, smoothing serum. One containing hyaluronic acid is perfect. Beauty Pie’s Japanfusion Genius Lift Elixir (£12 for members) is a good choice. Follow with a moisturiser and primer.
If you haven’t bought a new foundation since summer, you may need a new one in a lighter shade. Struggling to find the perfect match? Head to Boots or Harvey Nichols to try Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation (£30), which is available in more than 50 shades. It lasts all day and doesn’t feel too heavy.
Flawless make-up relies on good tools. If you haven’t upgraded your makeup brushes for a while, consider treating yourself to some new ones or adding a set to your Christmas wish list. The TRUYU Brush Collection contains pretty much every brush you might need and is only £15 at Sainsbury’s and Argos.
You’ll likely be doing a fair bit of kissing over Christmas, even if it’s just on cheeks. NYX Milky Shakes Glosses keep lips hydrated and add a burst of colourful shine. They’re also less sticky than most glosses, which the people you’re kissing will no doubt be grateful for. And they’re just £9 from Superdrug.
For Christmas nails, it’s hard to beat a professional gel polish. Nails should stay chip-free for at least a week, but it’s wise to book as close to the big day as possible. That way, they’ll still be looking good for New Year’s Eve. Left it too late to book a manicure? Apply a base coat, two coats of varnish and a top coat to keep your nails looking their best for the festive period. H&M’s Nail Polish is only £3.99, but it lasts just as long as ones three times the price. And there are tons of shades to choose from.
No idea where to start with your make-up? You’ll find lots of free tutorials on YouTube. Or why not book a personalised make-up tutorial? MAC offers free 30 and 60 minute virtual consultations. Visit www.maccosmetics.co.uk/makeup-services to book.

The Rotary Club of Oswestry’s Tree of Light Appeal 2022
The Oswestry Rotary Club Tree of Light Appeal once again seeks to raise much needed funds for local groups and charities this Christmastime.
At 5pm on Friday 18 November, everyone was invited to join in the Switch On of the Christmas lights on Festival Square by Oswestry Town Mayor Cllr Jay Moore.
With the ongoing effects of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis, for smaller charities, a Tree of Light donation can form a significant part of their annual income.
This year’s headline group is Oswestry’s own OsNosh, supporting and growing the community through food while funds will also be raised for Severn Hospice, Lingen Davies, the Marches Riding for the Disabled and Ukrainian Refugees.
Santa and his elf helper, bearing some small gifts for the children, mingled with the crowds to have photos taken with the onlookers!
But how can you make a donation?
You can make a donation of £5 by texting TREEOFLIGHT to 70085. Each text costs £5 plus one standard rate message and donors are able to add 25% Gift Aid to their donation during the process.
Traditional giving by cheque is also possible by completing the sponsor form printed here where a dedication to remember a significant event can be made and the returning it to the address shown.
A Book of Remembrance will be kept for all dedications which will be displayed in Oswestry Library.
The appeal closes on Twelfth Night.
Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, look back fondly over happy years and remember those we have loved and lost. For many it can also be a time of sadness, when the loss of a loved one is most keenly felt, a time when we particularly remember those people whom we love but, sadly, see no longer. But the Tree of Light is not only about remembering those we have lost. It is also about celebrating, a time to be glad and grateful for all of the gifts we have received and to remember how good life has been to us. A wedding anniversary, an engagement, a special birthday, a treasured friendship, the birth of a child; all of these things we can celebrate by making a dedication on the Tree of Light.

Business
A Welsh Shop in England
Siop Cwlwm is probably the only Welsh shop in England! The shop is run by business partners and mother and daughter team, Linda and Lowri. Lowri’s background is Welsh translation, and mum Linda is a retired teacher and they are both from Penybontfawr in the Tanat Valley.
The shop started in Oswestry indoor market in 2010 as Linda and Lowri felt it was a ‘low risk’ way of testing the market. With neither coming from a retail background, they developed the business from a shopper’s perspective. “The market management and the Town Council have been extremely supportive and helpful during our time in the market. We just ran out of space as the business grew,” Lowri said.
“We then took an office on Arthur Street and moved the online operation to there. This enabled us to continue to grow and develop the business, but it wasn’t the most time-efficient way of doing things, having two locations. We’ve been looking for a suitable shop unit in Oswestry since 2021 and were delighted to find 33 Bailey Street. It’s previous use as a computer shop and workshop meant the ‘back shop’ area is perfect for our online operation. Being in Bailey Street means we’re right in the medieval retail centre of Oswestry – an ideal reflection of our bilingual heritage,” Lowri explained.
Talking about why they set up the shop, Lowri said, “We started the business because Welsh speakers could buy everything in Oswestry apart from Welsh books, cards and gifts. We’re passionate first language speakers of Welsh and want the language to thrive and develop.”
Even if you don’t speak the language, you may have Welsh speaking relatives who would love an original gift. The shop stocks Welsh books, cards and gifts. “We try to avoid the Welsh stereotypes of red dragons and daffodils and celebrate and promote the vibrant and modern
culture that exists today. We’re proud to reflect the bilingual heritage of Oswestry, as the Welsh language has been spoken here throughout history.”
Most popular in the shop are currently greetings cards, children’s books, Love spoons, socks, bucket hats (football related due to Wales reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1958). Linda and Lowri are a wealth of information, and they love helping learners to find books and resources to help their journey to learn Welsh, as well as signposting them to local lessons and classes. They also love to help
family members choose suitable Welsh books for children.
Amongst their customers are Welsh speakers who live in the area or are visiting, adults who are learning Welsh or want to learn it and people buying a gift for a Welsh speaking friend or relative. “The Welsh language belongs to everyone in Britain, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone!” said Lowri.
As well as selling in the shop, they make a lot of sales online and this is what has enabled them to grow the business and move from the market to Bailey Street.
When you visit the shop, you will find a loyalty scheme, half price books and Love Reading scheme for schools, which all help.
The shop will be open late on selected evenings and on 2 December for Christmas Live.

Here at Henlle Heights, the menu will be ever evolving, using lots of great local produce, from rare pork
breeders Pen y lan, to using a great dairy farm to create beautiful ice creams for us at Backford Belles.”
Henlle Hall luxury woodland accommodation has won an award every year for the past 10 years, including Best in Britain three times. Henlle Hall are the flagship for Hoseasons ‘Magnificent’ category which was launched this year.
Group Chief Commercial Officer of Hoseasons, Simon Altham, had this to say to the team: “Firstly, HUGE congratulations on
your win! You are in one of ‘those’ regions where you have to be doing something ‘extraordinary’ to get the gold medal. It isn’t enough to be good or great, you need to be smashing it out the park, week in week out. And clearly you are doing that in spades. Innovation is also at the core of everything you do and it is clear that this is also paying off.
“In some regions a win is definitely easier than others – in your case I take my hat off to you and the team, as I know how hard you work to make the magic happen. So well done and thoroughly well deserved. You have an incredible team of passionate people who I am sure are all inspired by both of you, as your vision and attention to detail is unrivalled across the industry.”

Butternut squash wreath
These colourful puff pastry wreaths are easier to assemble than they look and make a fabulous centrepiece for Christmas Day lunch or dinner.
Makes 2 (serves 4-6)
Preparation: 30mins Cooking time: 50-60mins
Ingred I ents
• 900g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into small cubes
• 2 red onions, peeled and thinly sliced
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 tbsp maple syrup
• 4 unpeeled whole garlic cloves
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 2 x 375g packs of readyrolled puff pastry
• 100g baby spinach leaves
• 85g shelled pistachios
• 1 red chilli, deseeded and diced
• 100g grated Cheddar cheese
• 4 tsp green pesto
• 4 tsp cranberry sauce
• 1 medium free-range egg, beaten
Method
• Preheat the oven to 200°C / fan 180°C / gas mark 6. Line 2 baking trays with baking parchment.
• Place the squash and red onions on 2 other baking trays and drizzle with the olive oil and maple syrup. Tuck the garlic cloves in between, season lightly with salt and pepper and roast in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until tender and starting to caramelise.
• Meanwhile, roll out the pastry sheets, if necessary, until they are about 6mm thick and big enough to cut a large round from. Place each one on a lined baking tray. Using a 27cm flan tin or a dinner plate as a guide, place it on top of each pastry sheet and cut round it to make a large circle. Set aside the pastry trimmings. Next, use a smaller plate to lightly score out an inner circle in the centre of each round. Use a sharp knife to cut through the pastry of the inner circle, first lengthways, then widthways, and again through the quarters to create 8 sections.
• Squeeze the garlic out of the skins and stir into the hot roasted squash and onion mixture. Add the spinach and leave it to wilt slightly and soften. Place spoonfuls of the mixture in a ring around each pastry disc, avoiding the outer edge and the central star. Sprinkle with the pistachios, chilli and grated cheese. Drizzle alternately with pesto and cranberry sauce around the ring on top.
• Work your way round each disc, raising the outer edge a little and pulling the point of each cut inner section over the filling towards the pastry edge. Pinch them together with your fingers to seal.
• Lightly brush the pastry with beaten egg and, if using, attach some pastry stars with a little more beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until puffed up, crisp and golden brown.

Coffee & gingerbread Christmas bundt cake
The ultimate cake to celebrate Christmas – add a little sprinkle of glitter or edible lustre before serving if you wish to make it twinkly!
Makes 1 large bundt cake Preparation: 20mins Cooking time: 45mins
Ingred I ents
• 250g soft butter at room temperature, plus a little extra melted to brush the cake tin
• 250g light muscovado sugar
• 5 medium free-range eggs
• 250g self-raising flour, plus a little extra for dusting
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 2 tsp ground ginger
• 2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 75g buttermilk
• 50ml Camp Coffee
• For the sugar glaze
• 150g icing sugar, sifted
• 3-4 tbsp water or milk
• 2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
• To decorate
• Icing sugar
Method
• Brush a little melted butter inside the bundt tin, making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies, then dust with flour, shaking the tin to ensure the whole tin is buttered and floured to help the cake turn out without sticking.
• Preheat the oven to 180°C / fan 160°C / gas mark 4 and place a large baking sheet in the centre of the oven to place the bundt tin onto whilst baking.
• In a stand mixer, with an electric whisk or by hand with a bowl and wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together well until pale and creamy. Gradually add the eggs, one at a time, beating until incorporated.
• Add the baking powder and spices to the flour and mix to distribute, then mix into the wet batter.
• Mix in the buttermilk and Camp Coffee then spoon the mixture into the tin, smoothing over with a spoon to ensure it is all pushed into the points of the tin, pushing the batter up the sides of the tin a little.
• Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes until cooked through – the sponge should be light and springy, and when a knife or skewer is inserted into the centre of the cake it should come out clean.
• Once cooked, leave the cake in the tin for 5 minutes, then invert onto a plate or cake stand and carefully release the cake.
• While the cake is cooling, make the sugar glaze. Place the icing sugar in a bowl and slowly stir in the liquid and vanilla (if using) a little at a time to make a pourable glaze. Drizzle over the cooled cake and dust with icing sugar for a snowy effect. Slice and serve slightly warm. The cake will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days or can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

FILM OF THE MONTH
EDITOR’S CHOICEGhost Stations
BY BRUCE BARRYMORE HALPENNYSeeing as we have quite a military history surrounding Oswestry, have you ever wanted to go out and explore the old patches and look for clues?
Decision To Leave (15)
South Korean cinema had a moment in the sun back in 2020 with the success of ‘Parasite’. Acclaimed romantic mystery, ‘Decision to Leave’, should repeat that. When a climber is found dead at the foot of a mountain, his widow seems not to care. Police detective Hae-joon suspects foul play and begins an investigation that turns into an obsessive courtship. The premise of a detective falling for a suspect is nothing new, films from ‘Basic Instinct’ through to ‘Out of Sight’ explore similar ground, but few explore it with this level of technique and imagination. Korean director Park Chanwook is known for his precise staging, setting many of his scenes to look more like beautiful paintings than film. He focuses on seemingly unimportant details which come back later, taking on new significance as the film continues, even finding tenderness and intimacy in police procedures like DNA swabbing. Everything, from the sound design to the editing, even the opening credits, will be thought through with an attention to detail rarely found. If you liked ‘Parasite’ or enjoy the kind of thriller that exercises the head and the heart, you won’t find better. Give yourself a present and watch ‘Decision to Leave’, it’ll be the best thing you see in December.
LIKE THIS? TRY ‘STOKER’, ‘Decision to Leave’ director Park Chanwook’s hugely overlooked 2013 psychodrama, with a career best performance from Matthew Goode and a star turn from Nicole Kidman. When 18-year-old India Stoker’s father is killed in a car crash, she meets his mysterious brother Charlie for the first time at the funeral. Before long, Charlie has moved into the family’s mansion and brings out a side to India she never knew existed. As both mother and daughter compete for his attention, we discover Charlie may not be the sophisticated gent he appears. All of the director’s trademarks are here with moments of beauty among the bloodshed. Simply superb. Available to stream.

Having grown up on RAF bases, I’m familiar with some of the ghost stories and they will have the hairs on your neck standing on end! I also experienced something as a young teenager that I’ve never been able to explain at RAF Scampton and I certainly never forgot it. Written in the 80’s and onwards, these books by Halpenny may seem ‘old’ but the stories are still very much alive today and they don’t change! The author served in the RAF himself and went on to become a military historian, and expert in arms and all types of security.
Tales of ghostly animals and people going about their business on the bases and walking amongst the living, it’s quite creepy really but unsurprising given all the activity that’s taken place over the years.
If you like something a bit spooky and you are interested in military history, this could really get your attention. There’s not just one volume but a few to get hold of which should keep you going.

Now I’m 64
BY DAVE ANDREWSThe spritely man I used to be has gone, I have to take the stairs now one by one, It’s many years since I could touch my toes, There’s hair protruding from my ears and nose.
My hearing’s not quite what it used to be, I need these reading specs to help me see, My voice may crack, my temples have turned grey, I’ve wrinkles, sags and blotches on display. But I’m still Dave! It’s me behind this skin!
The change is on the outside not within. My story carries on inside my brain, I’m still a youthful dreamer in the main. Remember I’ve been young, although you can

Books to give and receive
Demon Copperhead – Barbara Kingsolver
Demon Copperhead looks set to cement Barbara Kingsolver’s reputation as one of the best authors of our time. In this modern-day reimaging of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, the ‘Demon’ of the title is born to a single, drug-addicted mother in poverty-stricken Virginia. At every turn, the odds are stacked against him, from the broken care system to the lack of job opportunities and his own sense of worth. Raw, angry, starkly beautiful, this book is an absolute masterpiece.
Good Comfort – Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Healthy recipes tend to focus on what to leave out – whether the focus is on cutting carbs, ditching meat or reducing fat. With Good Comfort, the focus is on what to add to make a meal or snack more nutritious (and more delicious). Think lamb tagine with apricots and chickpeas, pork ribs with fennel slaw, and hot chocolate with raw cacao powder, oak milk, brown sugar and cardamom pods.
Queen of Our Times: The Life of Elizabeth II – Robert Hardman
Published before her death, Queen of Our Times provides a fascinating insight into our longest-reigning monarch. Incredibly detailed and impeccably researched, this book is a must for biography fans, history lovers and royalists alike. You’ll read insights from people who knew the Queen well, including former world leaders, and be treated to a range of black and white and colour photographs from throughout the Queen’s life.
The Big Christmas Bake – Fiona Barker and Pippa Curnick
This sweet little children’s book takes inspiration from the Twelve Days of Christmas song. On each day, animals (from the traditional partridge to dancing hippos) bring one ingredient to make a very special cake. Colourful illustrations and amusing rhymes mean this book could well turn into a new Christmas favourite. Plus, there’s a recipe at the end so families can make their own twelfth night cake.
Focus on… 2022
After 2 years living with Covid, 2022 saw life getting back to cautious normality. It was so good seeing the town’s events re-emerging, and to be out there photographing them. Oswestry loves to celebrate, and we did it in style again this year. So, I felt that in this Christmas issue we should look back at a few highlights. And look forward to 2023.
Oswestry law firm Lanyon Bowdler has been shortlisted in two categories at the national Personal Injury Awards. The awards, now in their 15th year, recognise the excellence of law firms and individuals across the personal injury and medical negligence sectors, with 21 awards being presented on the night.
Lanyon Bowdler has been named as a finalist in the Clinical Negligence Team of the Year category and Beth Heath, a partner and head of Lanyon Bowdler’s clinical negligence team, is a finalist in the Clinical Negligence Lawyer of the Year category.
Brian Evans, managing partner, at Lanyon Bowdler said, “We are delighted to be shortlisted in two categories at the Personal Injury Awards - the country’s leading awards in the personal injury and clinical negligence sectors.
“It recognises our position as one of the top legal firms and is a particularly pleasing achievement because the judging process is always extremely thorough. Being shortlisted also demonstrates how our lawyers regularly go above and beyond supporting clients during extremely difficult periods of their lives.
“Our clinical negligence team, which has an enviable reputation within the industry, works tirelessly on behalf
of our clients and fully deserves to be recognised on the national stage with this shortlisting.
“And it’s only right that Beth, the leader of the team and one of the finest lawyers in the country in her field, should also be recognised in this way.
“The award judges look for team collaboration and coordination leading to the best possible outcomes and wins for clients, and a heightened understanding of, and demonstrable commitment to, the needs of catastrophically injured clients and their families.
“Catastrophic injuries are life-changing; they include devastating brain injuries, amputations and spinal cord injuries. Achieving the maximum level of compensation is vital to ensure day-to-day needs are met both now and particularly in the future.”
Beth’s shortlisting was a result of a written submission which outlined the commitment she has to her clients and her passion to achieve successful outcomes.
The judges form an independent panel of experts chosen for their expertise, experience and positions within the field of personal injury.
1.People prefer doing the chores
A recent survey* by ABI found that 48% of adults did not check on their retirement savings in the last year but spent at least 30 minutes per week on household chores! Taking the time to understand your
provision can be a huge relief.
2.
A different kind of gift
Whether already retired or not, if you have surplus income, you can help your loved ones by paying into a pension on their behalf. There are restrictions on contribution amounts, but this could be a huge help to those who cannot afford to save themselves.
3. What a relief
Non tax-payers, including those who are not earning and children are eligible for tax relief of 20% on pension contributions, even though they do not pay tax! The maximum level of tax relief is currently £720 per year. Tax relief is a bonus from the government for saving for your future.
4. The oldies may not be the goldies
Some types of older pensions could have limited options on how you can draw your benefits, which may not be the most tax efficient route for you. Always speak to an adviser to understand any potentially valuable benefits these pensions may have though before deciding on any course of action.
5. Helping from the ‘other side’
Pension savings do not count towards the value of your estate upon death for inheritance tax purposes, so it may be appropriate to consider this in the grand legacy plan. It is important to ensure that you have named who you wish to receive any pension benefits.
Next time you go to grab that duster, why not dig out the old pension paperwork instead? If you would like any help with any aspect of financial planning, please get in touch for a no obligation chat.
The value of an investment with St James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is dependent upon individual circumstances.

Minutes with the MP
By Helen Morgan – MP for North ShropshireWhat a year it’s been.
When I was elected last December, I knew Boris Johnson was unpopular, but I wasn’t expecting to see three Prime Ministers in power in my first 12 months in Parliament.
It may be historic, but I really wish it wasn’t the case because the turmoil in Government has done nothing to help the country.
As a result, far too many people will be relying on the generosity of others this Christmas.
Thankfully here in Oswestry we have lots of fantastic community groups that go out of their way to help families across the town – places like OsNosh, the Qube and Oswestry Foodbank where staff and volunteers are working incredibly hard for the benefit of others.
Meeting the teams at organisations like these is always a highlight of my week.
When times are tight it would be understandable for people to focus on themselves, but it’s been really heart-warming to see the community spirit on show stronger than ever before in Oswestry and across North Shropshire.
Of course, I would prefer we had a Government able enough to ensure people don’t need to rely on donations to eat or libraries to keep warm, but the Conservatives’ repeated failures suggest this won’t happen until we have a General Election. Perhaps Father Christmas could drop some ballot papers down our chimneys…
Joking aside, after a tumultuous period we are all due some festive cheer. I’m looking forward to admiring the Christmas lights (as long as they’re low energy!), singing carols and seeing snow dust the top of the Hillfort.
But I’ll also be thinking of those less fortunate, like the Ukrainian refugees spending Christmas in Oswestry this year and the families skipping Christmas dinner so they can put the heating on.
If you, or someone you know, is in need of help then please contact me by emailing helen.morgan. mp@parliament.uk.
However you are celebrating, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and here’s to a much happier New Year.
Work Experience with an MP
By Emillie Parsons-HannFrom an outsider’s perspective it may seem as though politics is considerably straight forward - you meet, you talk, you act, however I can tell you that the behindthe-scenes preparation is heavily underestimated. Earlier this year, I was privileged with the opportunity to complete my work experience alongside North Shropshire’s MP, Helen Morgan, and her teamexperiencing diurnal work within a bustling constituency office.
From the start, I was exposed to an array of roles: casework, campaigning and management, while also being entrusted with writing replies and letters to a range of different people, all differing in topic focus. From the cost-of-living crisis to a Primary School class writing to enquire how Ukrainian children can be better helped in the classroom-each piece of casework was carefully considered before a response was formulated. I was amazed to discover the sheer amount of work that enters the caseworker’s inbox, but more so to learn that the small group of four had managed to answer over 4000 cases within the last year! The Press Board situated on the office wall doesn’t give nearly enough tribute to their tenacity in finding ways to try and improve the constituency. As busy as they were, Helen and her team were still more than willing to answer questions and involve me in their work- taking the time to explain the impact and purpose of their role, as well as how press releases are edited and circulated.
It was engaging to see how Helen prioritized the constituency’s concerns regarding agriculture, public transport, the NHS and local business within her PMQ and community work-it was obvious how deeply she cared about improving North Shropshire. It must be said that no two days were the same and this experience offered me an unfiltered insight into politics. From this I quickly learnt that adaptability is paramount for a career within the government this month alone being a perfect example of political unpredictability.

New Oswestry Hearing Clinic Opening
Integrate Hearing are pleased to announce their newest partnership with well-established family-run independent opticians N.Lloyd-Thomas & Son in Church Street, Oswestry. Both practices share the same values and put patient care at the centre of everything that they do. They are very excited to become one of the few private Audiology clinics within the area.
Ear Wax Removal
Are your ears feeling blocked? Do you suffer from ear pain or tinnitus? Have your ears blocked following a shower or swimming? An ear wax blockage is something that many people will experience at some point in their life and can often be something that becomes more apparent with age.
As ear cleaning and ear wax removal specialists, Integrate Hearing carry out both the traditional method of water irrigation (ear syringing) and the latest method for ear wax removal, known as microsuction. There are major benefits for having professional ear wax removal as opposed to using home-style kits which can be unsafe. It is not advisable to attempt to remove ear wax at home with cotton buds which generally pushes the wax further towards the eardrum and can cause more problems
Because patient care is at the heart of what they do, and they want you to have the best ear health care possible, as part of your ear wax removal appointment, fully qualified clinical audiologists will carry out a full ear health examination and will discuss with you any findings and make a referral to your GP where necessary. Appointments are readily available and there are no long waiting times as experienced on the NHS, who in 2020 cut the funding for ear wax removal and in some areas no longer provide it as part of their routine service.
If you are over the age of 50 it’s time to book your hearing check!
Many people don’t know that hearing loss untreated is a risk factor for increased cognitive impairment and has been linked to Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Audiologists now recommend regular hearing testing for anyone over the age of 50 as part of your routine check-ups alongside dental checks and sight tests. It is becoming increasingly popular to book both your sight and hearing check at the same time. This partnership allows a streamlined process for patients, who can have
confidence that they benefit from the knowledge and experience of two well-established independent clinics.
What to expect at a hearing check
• Medical questions related to your ears and your hearing.
• Ear examination
• Hearing test which tests the key frequencies to confirm if your hearing is within a normal range. If a loss is found, it may highlight that you would benefit from a full hearing test or referral to your doctor.
Integrate Hearing can discuss your options with you, allowing you to decide your next step to better hearing.
If the hearing test shows that you have a certain degree of hearing loss you may require a Full Hearing Assessment to test your hearing in more detail. If hearing aids are advisable our HCPC and BSHAA registered Audiologists can recommend a bespoke hearing package and the most suitable hearing aids for your specific hearing requirements and listening environments. Being independent means access to all manufacturers and models, so whatever the hearing aid style or technology you need, they have you covered!
Symptoms of Hearing Loss
• Difficulty hearing the TV?
• Missing parts of the conversation
• Poor clarity of speech on the telephone?
• Asking people to repeat themselves more frequently
• Struggling to hear when there’s lots of background noise?
“Independent hearing clinics are always voted number 1 over high street chains according to Which? surveys and the proof is in the quality of services we are able to offer our patients. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile for every patient and therefore our patients come back to us again and again.”
Olivia Austin Company Director & Clinical Audiologist.

REMEDIES TO CHEER ABOUT!
We often have mixed feelings about Christmas. Some love the big build up and family time. Others loathe the big build up and family time.
Coping with Christmas and the stress it brings is something to strive for. Think of your nerves and those of others. Look after your nervous system and nourish those adrenal glands that deal with stress.
Liquorice is a sweet tasting remedy that also supports those stress coping glands, although can raise blood pressure in those prone to it. Liquorice is also a supporter of the digestive system by keeping things moving! Sluggish digestion is another unwelcome visitor at Christmas.
Traditional spices that we associate with the yuletide are cinnamon, cloves and ginger.
These warming spices are excellent for sprucing up your circulation in the colder season and can also act as digestive supporters. Their oils are also good for tense muscles.
Something as simple as cinnamon tea or spiced milk are not only evocative of past times but also a good tonic to your digestion, helping discomfort to move on.
Peppermint is a simple remedy to alleviate indigestion as it calms cramping and bloating. A must at times of overindulgence.
Finally, when everyone is testing your patience, remember that a shot of Valerian in your hot cocoa will bliss you out so you won’t care!
Wishing you all a wonderful, relaxed and painless time.

Dr Paul MiddletonIs Jack Frost nipping at your nose?
Do you remember the beautiful patterns of ice that “Jack Frost” used to paint on the inside of your bedroom windows? If you do I suspect you’re over 50 years old at least: central heating and climate change are driving this Jack Frost further North. But with the cost of heating going up he may be making a comeback in some houses this winter.
“Does this matter?” I hear you say. Well, apart from just general discomfort, low temperatures do pose a risk to health. When the outside temperature drops to 4-8 degree Celsius then cold related deaths start rising. The most vulnerable people are the over 75s and very young children. Cold increases the chances of stroke and heart attack as well as threatening our mental health and increasing the chance of chest infections. It also tends to drive us indoors where viruses spread more easily and winter does see an excess of deaths related to this effect. If you have an elderly relative or friend, particularly if they have reduced mobility or had a fall or suffer from chest problems then making sure they are okay and warm enough in cold spells could be a real kindness.
What is warm enough? Guidance suggests a room temperature of about 19-21 degrees Celsius. Interestingly that is reduced to a minimum of 16 degrees at work and even 13 degrees if the work involves significant physical effort. We sleep more comfortably at a lower, and less expensive, temperature of about 15 to 18 degrees.
Some homes are hotter than others and more expensive to heat. Old windows, draughty doors, poor insulation and older homes put more people at risk. The CAB have a Cold Homes Toolkit with useful advice for some of these situations. The Adult Care services run
Council can also offer support and their contact details are available at Shropshire.gov.uk.
Here’s hoping we have a mild winter and a warm house. Merry Christmas.
Cold increases the chances of stroke and heart attack as well as threatening our mental health and increasing the chance of chest infections.
Mayor Jay Moore: Raising Money for Youth Mental Health Services
by Tali Larmour-JonesOswestry’s Mayor, Councillor Jay Moore, is one of the younger Mayors the town has seen for quite some time. When he came into office in May this year, he pledged to help young people. Jay is making good on that promise; by helping to secure an annual council budget for young people’s and youth services. You can often find him at local events, seeming to be everywhere at once.
I caught up with Councillor Moore (known as Jay to many) to discuss the charity he would be selecting to fund-raise for this year. However, Jay has decided that this year will be slightly different.
Instead of selecting just one charity, he is championing a cause: Improving mental health and wellbeing in under eighteens. By choosing a cause and not just one charity, Jay hopes to create a fund for those already providing, or looking to provide, services that support mental wellbeing for under eighteens in the area.
Jay is incredibly passionate about wishing to create a versatile community fund, with a simplified grant-style application process. The aim is that the fund will be available for charities, services, clubs and groups to apply for that are promoting and wishing to provide services to improve mental wellbeing for those struggling.
Local schools can also apply for the fund to improve their already existing mental health services for students. Jay is already in talks with some of these schools regarding their currently available mental health services, as well as possible ways to further develop and enhance these for pupils.
Whilst speaking to Jay, he was very open about his past. Having struggled with his mental health and facing his battles throughout the years, he is incredibly passionate about improving available services. Speaking about his own experiences he said, “You feel like you are certain (when struggling), but you have no idea what the future holds.”
Increasing awareness of services available, as well as support to people struggling, is paramount. Many in the area already know someone that suffers; or sadly already lost the battle to poor mental health over the years. By helping to support youth mental health projects and services, the hope is the number of tragic incidents occurring can be reduced and mental health well-being improved.
When asked how he plans to raise money for the fund, he explained a “kitchen-sink” approach. Jay aims to raise as much as possible through different avenues, such as support from
local businesses, raffles and charity fundraisers. Be sure to keep your eyes out in the future for ways to get involved yourselves.
Jay hopes to not just raise funds for new projects but to support and shine a light on those working hard over the years, supporting youth mental health. When questioned on why he chose youth mental health, he explained that the number of services available for those under eighteen is different for adults and outside of Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), 111 or A&E - there are limited options available for most children and youth.
As well as this, many under the age of eighteen lack proper coping mechanisms that adults have developed over the years. Jay hopes that the money raised will provide a much-needed boost to services within the local area and that by supporting more grassroots projects, additional support will be available to children at a younger age.
If you would like to find out more information about the fund or have questions ahead of applying, email Jaymoore@oswestry-tc.gov.uk
The fund should be fully accessible before the end of Jay’s term in May 2023, but he encourages anyone interested in applying or with ideas to get in touch.

Christmas trees
In the UK we buy between eight and ten million ‘real’ Christmas trees each year that are taken down a few weeks later. So buy local if possible, and look for Forest Stewardship Council certification and Soil Association approval. Always use your local authority’s dedicated collection service if available. A tree with a root ball or in a pot that is planted out for the rest of the year is environmentally friendly, or rent a tree, which will be collected and replanted afterwards. Artificial trees are sadly still plastic, so if you have one reuse it for as long as possible.
Tree ornaments
Nothing is as sustainable as using Christmas baubles you already have and if you want to refresh your stock of tree decorations, consider buying vintage ones. Buy from a local craftsperson or an online platform such as Etsy or Folksy (ideally someone using sustainable materials), or make some yourself. There is a world of inspiration in books, magazines, online or in hobby supply stores.
Front-door wreaths
Making a front-door wreath using fresh foliage is a wonderful, sustainable way to adorn your home (and it can be composted afterwards). Artificial wreaths are only sustainable if reused, but can easily be refreshed with a few extra seasonal embellishments,

Use a simple wreath as a minimal decoration, or add your own embellishments such as twining leaves or tiny fairy lights. Rattan door wreaths, from £30 each, gardentrading.co.uk
such as dried, sliced oranges, pine cones or sprigs of holly.
Lights
Choosing LED lights for your festive decorations saves energy and money, and is good for the planet, too. Use a timer, or switch them off overnight and when you’re out.
Gift wrap
Stick to paper if possible or consider fabric, Japanese-style (furoshiki). Use alternatives to sticky tape such as brown-paper tape, twine, ribbons and washi tape, which is made from renewable sources.
Table settings
Use fabric that can be washed repeatedly for Christmas tablecloths and napkins. Choose reusable card or fabric crackers that you fill yourself with personalised gifts year after year.
Advent calendars
DIY perpetual advent calendars can be brought out every year and filled with carefully chosen small goodies. Either make your own or buy from a great choice, from tiny knitted stockings on a string to wooden houses with numbered doors.
Scent
You generally get what you pay for with scented candles in terms of a gorgeous scent and longer burn time, so it’s worth spending a little more if possible. Choose vegetable wax or beeswax candles, and scents made from essential oils rather than chemicals.
Are you dreaming of a green Christmas? Then try these ideas!

December in the garden
by Graham MitchellI wonder what type of winter we will see this year. Will it be mild, or will we get a lot of snow? Either way, for gardeners, it is all about a mix of preparation and caution.
If you grow vegetables there is still plenty to harvest, and after a few frosts the flavours improve so there should be tasty parsnips and brussels sprouts for Christmas dinner. If you mulch the parsnips with some straw, it will be easier to dig if it freezes. Celeriac and leeks can also be harvested. Remove yellowing and old leaves on the brassicas, such as kale, to prevent mould and other disease. If you have a pigeon problem some netting will prevent you having to share your produce with them.
Preparation for next spring is vital. A little work now will reap huge rewards in a few months’ time. It is a good time to plant some new fruit trees. If you are limited for space then think about training as cordons, fans or espaliers. They are not only efficient but very attractive and can be used as screens.
Caution is not just about the freezing temperatures. You should have already protected your delicate plants a few months ago and brought all your watering equipment inside to prevent splitting. Waterlogging is a big killer, so ensure drainage-holes are free. Indoors you can reduce watering of houseplants but keep an eye on those
geraniums that you have brought inside. They can rapidly dry out if you forget about them. Strong winds are a gardener’s nightmare, so it pays to do regular checks on trees, shrubs and structures. Better some preventative work now than clearing the damage later.
If you have a pond remove all the sodden, fallen leaves. Make sure you leave them a couple of days next to the water, so that pondlife can escape, before adding to the compost pile. We’ll be feeding and providing water for the birds, but if you are storing fruit and veg, make sure that the mice can’t get at them.
Then it is time to sit down with a brandy and a mince pie. Happy Christmas!
Energy scams
Which? warn that they have received reports of phone calls to households, pretending to be from the council and asking for card details to make a £150 energy rebate payment. They also report that scammers impersonate Ofgem through emails, texts and websites asking people to enter their banking details to qualify for fake energy refunds. The latest scam focuses on the Government’s new energy grants – it’s a text that asks you to click a link to sign up for the grant. The Government are not sending text messages as the grant will be applied to your energy account automatically.
This text comes from various phone numbers – you can check phone numbers on the website ‘who called me’ which will tell you if a number has been reported as suspicious. Forward the message to 7726 to report the scam and then block the phone number.
Santander scam
Watch out for fake emails saying that your account has been suspended –especially fake if you don’t have a Santander account - but the email address info@jeam.co.jp is also a clue!
Be scam–aware
Were you expecting a call from this company? If not hang up, check for the correct number on their website – and ring them back. Don’t give out any personal informal information or bank details unless you are sure you are talking to the real company. Premium rate phone numbers beginning with ‘09’ can cost you up to £3.60 per minute.
Is the offer too good to be true? Then it very probably is a scam. Legitimate companies will always give you time to discuss the proposition with other people and think it over. Professional companies write professional emails that are checked – poor English is a sure sign of a scam.
If you have been affected by a scam - Victim Support has a free confidential helpline 0808 168 9111 and Mind 0300 123 3393. Visit www.rainford-it.co.uk or call 07552 863996
Use a price checker.
Not every deal is a great deal, and if you use sites such as pricespy.co.uk or uk.pricerunner. com you can see if a particular product is cheaper elsewhere. On Amazon you can use camelcamelcamel.com to view a product’s price history to see if it’s really a bargain.
Be flexible.
You probably won’t get great discounts on the very latest products, but if you’re willing to be flexible you can get a lot of money off devices such as phones, TVs and other gadgets by settling for a different colour, for last year’s version or for a slightly different model.
Pay cheaply.
Sometimes buying on credit means interest charges will be more than you’re actually saving, but some pay-later schemes don’t charge interest at all. If you’re not buying something outright, go for the cheapest borrowing available to you with the lowest APR – and look online for discounts for any retailer you’re considering buying from. It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it! You see something with a big discount, and it looks such a good deal you buy it without a second thought. But if you didn’t need it, or you’ve convinced yourself you like it when really it’s not ‘you’, it’s going to be a waste of money.
Christmas list
The deadline for online submission of self-assessment tax returns for tax year 2021/22 is 31 January 2023. This applies to individuals who are self-employed, partnerships, shareholders in receipt of dividends in excess of £2,000, directors and those with rental income to name a few.

Penalties increase further if a tax return becomes more than three months overdue with daily penalties increasing to a maximum of £1,300 plus the potential for tax-geared penalties ranging from 5% to 100% of the tax liability in more serious cases.

Can I sue my employer after I was attacked at work by a patient?
Q: I am employed as a Healthcare Assistant on a mental health ward. Three weeks ago, I was at work and had been instructed to constantly observe a patient. I asked the patient if he wanted something to drink and out of the blue, he punched me in the face. I suffered facial injuries and required dental treatment. After the incident it became clear that this patient suffered from hallucinations and was prone to become violent. I had not been warned of this, nor was this written in his care plan from last year. I am angry and I am out of pocket due to the dental treatment I needed. Can I claim compensation?
A: Despite the current pressures on the NHS, your employer has a duty of care to you and must take reasonable steps to prevent you from suffering harm whilst you are at work.
There are obvious measures that could have been taken to have avoided this incident. Your employer failed to warn you that the patient was prone to become violent, which meant that you were unaware of the risk of harm. Also, the care plan should have been comprehensive, clear and kept up to date. It might be that the patient’s care plan had not been updated to include his recent history of aggression.
These issues indicate that reasonable steps were not taken to keep you safe at work and therefore you should seek legal advice about making a claim.
Dental treatment can be very expensive. If you decide to go ahead with a claim it would be important for your solicitor to obtain an opinion from a dental specialist to say what future dental treatment you may need because of this incident, as the cost of this should be included in your claim.

INHERITANCE TAX - GIVING THE ULTIMATE GIFT
Over the past 12 months we’ve seen house prices increase by up to 15.5% across the UK, which for many people is welcome news.
There is one aspect of this which may not be so welcome though - the increase in homeowners who could find themselves hit by inheritance tax.
An issue that’s affecting a growing number of people, you may not be aware that the rise in your house price could have pushed you into the threshold where inheritance tax (IHT) would apply if you were to pass away.
At the moment the threshold for IHT is £325,000. This means that if your ‘estate’ (i.e., your savings, investments, properties, vehicles and any payouts from things like life insurance policies) amounts to over this, a portion could be liable to IHT.
Navigating IHT can be incredibly complex. It’s what’s referred to as ‘estate planning’ and there are numerous ways in which it can be approached. Three main routes include: gifting a proportion of your assets while you’re still alive, setting up a trust for someone to access at a later date or utilising investments that qualify for Business Relief.
How much inheritance tax someone will need to pay depends on the value of your estate, and this is worked out based on your assets. Normally there is no tax to pay if the value of your estate is below £325,000, or if you are leaving it to your spouse or a civil partner. It is also possible to offset a further £175,000 against your property if certain conditions are met.
The good news is that careful planning can lessen the impact of IHT. With the help of an independent financial adviser, there are ways to pass on what you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
