Spring fashion promises an unlikely opulent feel with bold embellishments on sporty items and shiny daytime options. Traders riding on a high after Shrewsbury Market Hall crowned ‘Britain’s Favourite Market 2018’ Traders at Shrewsbury Market Hall have had a lot to celebrate recently after it beat off competition from markets across the UK to be crowned ‘Britain’s Favourite Market 2018’ in The Great British Market Awards. “Exciting and inspirational” was how judges described the market, which has “reinvigorated itself” in the last few years. “Ten years ago, stalls were vacant, many town residents didn’t know the market existed and it was considered to be dull and uninspiring,” said judges. “Today it is full of exceptionally creative, vibrant and diverse businesses.” The Market Hall, which is jointly run by Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council, was one of six UK finalists short-listed 8 | It’s beautiful

for the coveted title after an initial public voting campaign. The second round of the competition involved visits to each market by both judges and a mystery shopper. Shrewsbury Market Hall was announced the winner at the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) One Day conference in Birmingham, along with other categories in The Great British Market Awards. NABMA Chief Executive, Hilary Paxman, who was one of the judging panel members, said: “Over the last ten years Shrewsbury Market has reinvented itself, adapted and changed its offer, turning the business around using a distinctive food offer to build a local reputation. “In the last three years footfall has risen by 40% and it has put

on some fantastic events which have attracted a new audience of shoppers and is making the market hall the go-to place in this market town.” The market now boasts various ward-winning eateries and street food offerings, a gin parlour and a diverse mix of contemporary and traditional stalls, ranging from fresh produce to gift and homeware boutiques and designer-makers. Shrewsbury Market Hall is home to nearly 70 small businesses and has more than 400 people on a waiting list for a stall. Its popularity was given a boost last year when it began opening for regular Saturday night events. Shrewsbury Market Hall, Claremont Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1HQ www.markethallshrewsbury.co.uk

Fashion

Label launch Shropshire based fashion designer Victoria McKenna recently launched her range of silk blouses after a two-year journey to see the business come to life. The first collection launched online mid January.

there are particular issues she had encountered that she wanted to tackle head on with the collection. However, we are all different shapes and sizes, so to allow for this the blouses are a seemingly relaxed fit to flatter all sizes.

So what is so luxurious about these items? The range of six blouses are made using silk georgette for the body and silk chiffon for the sleeves. They are a combination of glamorous and casual designs that can be both dressed up for the evening and relaxed for daytime. Victoria is working with a team of UK-based suppliers to produce this collection and the next, which is due Autumn 2018.

The brand is committed to producing clothes for women that make them feel beautiful with the silk against the skin and confident with the wow factor in the details.

Backing British is important for the brand with the silks coming from a Manchester silk factory, the buttons are hand covered by a London tailor and the garments are manufactured in London. Adding some more glamour to the blouses, the highest shine zips have been sought from a manufacturer in Milan, Italy. Victoria has made a concerted effort to design for women based on her own shopping experiences and having carried out extensive market research. The base shape and sizing has been based on Victoria herself. As a curvy woman,

“Entering the fashion industry without having studied fashion and with most of my working life having been in a corporate telecoms environment, the last two years has been a huge learning curve. I left a very logic, methodical based career as a project manager and getting back to my natural roots of being artistic and creative has been liberating. Although I absolutely loved my previous career, life had other ideas for me. It brought me back to what makes my soul happy and back to Shropshire! If I could give any advice about setting up a business on your own, it would be; don’t be put off by what others say. Take your idea, research it, develop it, get first hand advice from people doing it and if you see the green light, have absolute faith in yourself that you can make it happen.”

Clockwise from left, Victoria McKenna in the STRATO pussy bow blouse £250, CIRRUS Ruffle Blouse £400 and NIMBUS cutaway blouse £250

Although in it’s infancy, building ethics in to the business is a priority for Victoria. Getting involved with charity-based projects has been high on the agenda and is something she is working towards starting in the next 12 months. Commenting, Victoria says: “Although the business has been a dream of mine for a very long time, it’s not just about paying the bills. I feel it’s really important that I give back to the community as best I can by getting the brand involved with fundraising. How this starts to unfold with come clear in the next year or so but there are a couple of potential projects already in the pipeline.” So, if you are looking for a special item for your wardrobe that will look great with skinny jeans, for a special meeting or an occasion, one of these blouses is a real treat. If you wish to contact Victoria to discuss the collection or potential charitable projects, please contact her at vicky@victoriajanemckenna. com or on 0844 884 9266. Beauty trend: microblading

Charlotte Ruscoe tries out microblading at The Parlour in Shrewsbury

grow hugely in that time. So much so, she’s even started teaching the treatment to other practitioners.

BEFORE

Every era has its beauty fad and the twenty-teens seem to be all about the eyebrow. With no indication of the trend fading away any time soon, the race is on to get them looking thicker, darker and more pronounced. Beauty insiders are obsessed with this eyebrow treatment which can deliver Cara Delevingne-esque eyebrows. When Katie Mason, microblading specialist at The Parlour on Hills Lane, Shrewsbury asked me to come and try it for myself I jumped at the chance. Katie qualified as a licensed practitioner of microblading three years ago and has seen demand for the treatment

AFTER

Microblading is an ancient method that originates from Asia. While it might appear similar to eyebrow tattooing, it is not. Sometimes called eyebrow embroidery or 3D brows, microblading uses the finest blades to deposit pigment – creating natural looking hair strokes mimicking your natural eyebrow hair and giving realistic looking eyebrows. It can be used to create a really full brow, fill in sparse brows or even create eyebrows where there aren’t any. My usual eyebrow routine involves threading and tinting every fortnight, using an eyebrow pencil in between visits. As any mum knows, time in the morning is precious and anything that knocks time off my morning make-up routine is definitely worth a try.

I was nervous about how painful this treatment might be and so I was delighted to walk in the salon and be offered numbing cream straight away. This was followed by a consultation involving measuring and designing my new eyebrows with a pencil and choosing a colour. I chose the darkest colour ‘mocha’ knowing that it would fade over time. Katie got to work. As I lay back on the bed, I can honestly say I couldn’t feel a thing. The only reason I knew it was happening was the noise. I’m not sure if you can imagine the noise of someone making tiny cuts with a blade on your face, it’s a bit unnerving at first, but you soon get used to it and the relief of not feeling any pain meant I soon relaxed. The whole procedure took about an hour and throughout the process I was shown a mirror periodically to make sure I liked the results and if I wanted another hair or two here and there, she made it happen. Katie informed me that the results usually last about two years and that after an initial touch-up in 4-6 weeks’ time, the next top up is usually a colour boost at 12-18 months. One point to mention: You CANNOT get your eyebrows wet for about a week afterwards, so I highly recommend washing your hair before you go and make sure you are stocked up on dry shampoo.

Find your new season look

with Royston Blythe

Spring is here and there’s never been a better time to update your style with an amazing new cut and colour look. Whether you’ve got a style in mind or are unsure of where to start, Royston Blythe shares his rules for the best hair ever!

Tailor trends to suit you

Every trend and fashion-focused look should be completely tailored to suit you. Your hairdresser should always adapt your look to reflect a seasonal trend but it is most important to remember that you should wear a look that is completely suited to enhancing your personal features and complementing your own sense of style. You need professional advice from specialists who are trained to help you look the best version of yourself.

Mid-length is the new long For Spring/Summer 2018 mid-length styles are a must. A classic bob never goes too far from the radar and this season we love the longer length bob that is super versatile,

multi-functional and can be adapted to suit every occasion. Personalise your look by adding soft layers that will frame your face. You could consider adding a modern twist to a classic cut by introducing colour, ask your colour specialist to tailor tones to ensure you achieve a unique look. This season’s ‘Lob’ calls for tousled texture. The end result will be determined by the colour you choose. For those who like their hair to make a statement, consider icy platinum tones – think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley at the Tom Ford Show – or strong global colours. If you wish for a more subtle look, speak with your colourist about how they can incorporate soft tones using babylights or a root stretch technique – Alexa Chung’s a fan.

Opt for a crop

Whatever your age, your face shape and your style, there is a short elfin-like crop to suit you. Katie Holmes has very recently revolutionised her look for spring and hit the front page headlines after ditching her classic bob for a quirky, super-short pixie crop. We know that the power of an awesome hair transformation can be incredible and a hairdresser’s role is to delight you with expert colouring and face-shaping techniques to ensure that your new short hairstyle will enhance your best features. Remember, YOUR HAIR IS OUR REPUTATION ! At Royston Blythe, we love to keep hairstyles ultra-feminine and flattering by introducing texture, sweeping fringes and soft, face-framing layers. High impact blondes and statement reds are a perfect match with an iconic pixie crop, and this season there is an abundance of beautiful and striking blonde tones to choose from.

Turn up the volume

Hair extensions don’t just add length, they can be used to create a voluminous look and, they offer colour without chemicals too.

Make an investment

Don’t underestimate the importance of using the correct products to enhance your colour, ease your styling and maintain the integrity of your hair. When you visit your hairdresser for a beautiful colour, we strongly believe that you should be educated on the very best products to keep your hair looking amazing until your next visit. The advice of specialists at Royston Blythe would always be that you should invest in prescribed home care products that will ensure your hair colour is protected and prolonged whilst keeping your locks well-nourished and moisturised. Gardening

The magic of maples Japanese maples are the perfect choice of tree for any small, compact or courtyard garden. Their character and appeal makes them ideal for creating a focal point in your garden, brightening a shaded corner, or elegantly overhanging a pool or water feature. Many acers are commonly called Japanese maples, but their parents could be derived from several different species including Acer japonicum, Acer palmatum, Acer shirasawanum or others. Among them are some extremely slowgrowing forms, with trees remaining a small, manageable size without the need for regular pruning. With their Eastern origins in Japan, Korea and China, these small trees are suitable for developing gardens with Oriental themes and designs, choosing other suitable planting partners for them, like ferns, hostas, bamboo, azaleas, camellias, and more. Their natural shape and growing habit of branches make Japanese maples an ideal choice of small tree for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Their leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely. Many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate forms. Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have immense variety to choose from. While some green or purple-leaved varieties will tolerate an open position in full sun, this can scorch the more delicate foliage of golden, variegated or dissected forms. A sheltered site is more suitable, and particularly one that provides shade during the hottest part of the day and protection from drying winds. Japanese maples put on a show right through the year, starting as

soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation into shades of gold and bronze before they eventually fall. With dozens of marvellous Japanese maples available from nurseries and garden centres you’ll be spoilt for choice when picking one to add a little maple magic to your garden.

TOP MAPLES FOR ANY GARDEN

Spread a deep mulch of leaf-mould, compost or shredded bark over the soil around maples to retain moisture and reduce annual weed growth. For growing in containers choose large and stable terracotta pots with several drainage holes in their base. Line pots with a sheet of plastic before filling with compost to reduce water loss through the sides.

To help you choose the best varieties with outstanding garden performance always look for ones that have received an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society. Here are some of the most widely available AGM varieties:

As trees can remain in pots for several years it’s best to plant them using a loam-based John Innes No.3 compost with extra grit added to ensure good drainage. Do remember that established trees will need repotting into larger pots every few years.

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ Acer palmatum ‘Sango-Kaku’ Golden Shirasawanum maple (Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum’)

Keep the top of the compost a few inches below the pot rim to make watering from above easier, covering the surface with a mulch of pebbles or ornamental gravel.

TOP TIPS FOR GROWING JAPANESE MAPLES

Water regularly with collected rainwater, and stand pots in saucers of water to provide a reservoir for trees to take up each day during hot, dry periods.

Choose a sheltered site where trees are protected from late spring frosts, cold winds and scorching summer sun.

Maples prefer well-drained soil containing plenty of compost to lock in moisture and ensure the ground never dries out.

Tree roots can be susceptible to frost damage in winter, so either move pots to sheltered sites or wrap with bubble polythene insulation.

Life is serene with

MARRS GREEN

Marrs Green has been voted the World’s Favourite Colour after a survey by Hull - UK City of Culture 2017 - and paper merchant GF Smith. 30,000 people around the world voted and the most popular shade was closest to the one chosen by student Annie Marrs and so it was named after her! Annie said the colour was inspired by the blue, green and greys from the River Tay in Scotland. Annie said: “I had heard about G. F Smith’s ‘World’s Favourite Colour’ competition earlier in the year but just hadn’t got around to submitting my colour. It wasn’t until the end of April when I went out on the Pirate Boat trip on the River Tay in Dundee that I was inspired to pick my colour.

so many different and beautiful deep hues of green, blue and grey from the water and the sky. As soon as I got home I made a cup of tea and settled down to pick the colour. Turns out that the World’s Favourite Colour is a reflection of the landscape that surrounds us. It’s a colour that I’ve always loved and so, to me its no surprise that it’s was the favourite – turns out it’s everyone’s favourite! It’s an absolute privilege to have a colour named after me – time to redecorate!” This vibrant shade of teal is a continuation of the jungle trend which was big in 2017. The colour can be seen in everything from kitchens to cushions and matches nicely with metallics, especially coppers, golds, and leafy prints which remain popular. In these uncertain political times, it seems we all crave this tranquil colour and its reflection of nature’s serenity and beauty.

Second award for designer

something more than your volume house builders generic house type.

Bosses at Oswestry’s architectural design studio Ke-design are celebrating after scooping yet another award for a new build house designed and built in the town. Leafy Nook in Cherry Tree Drive was first commended by Oswestry Civic Society and has now received a special mention at Shropshire Council planning department’s Design & Conservation Awards 2017. Along with the council awards, the three-bedroomed detached house has also been featured in Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine. Craig Marston, director of Kedesign said: “This was the first

design awards hosted by Shropshire Council so it was a real honour to receive the recognition.” Ian Kilby, head of Shropshire Council’s planning department, praised the Ke-design team for giving careful consideration to the context and the environment of the site. Mr Marston added: “It was built speculatively which allowed us to then host our first open day which saw more than 100 people view the property. “Much of the feedback from viewers included the question as to why builders and developers do not embark on projects like Leafy Nook more often. “With all of the TV shows like Grand Designs and Building the Dream Home, people are wanting

“Leafy Nook meets the criteria for an affordable dwelling so therefore proves it doesn’t have to be on the scale and cost of the projects on Grand Designs,” he said. Ke-design has enjoyed a record breaking year with an increase in the number of clients searching for high quality design which also offers a different solution or idea which they may not have previously considered. Ke-design is exhibiting at the national Homebuilding & Renovating Show being held in Birmingham from March 22nd to 25th. Mr Marston is offering free tickets to the show. To request a free ticket please email info@ke-design.co.uk. For more information about Kedesign visit www.ke-design.co.uk and to find out more about the show visit www.homebuildingshow.co.uk

Ultra violet Pantone recently announced their colour of the year for 2018 is “ultra violet” a vivid purple.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute says: “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future. “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” The rich hue is inspired by galaxies and exploration. In the home we will see it in rich velvet throughout the winter and then more vibrant accessories and floral prints going into the summer. It also complements bright pinks and the jungle greens of recent years.

Gardening

Spring has sprung with perfect primulas Plant a rainbow of colour to welcome in spring by packing patio pots and filling flower beds with primulas and polyanthus. These cheerful bedding plants offer great value, flowering their hearts out for weeks on end to brighten your outlook on even the dullest of days.

©Adam Pasco Media: Primula in bloom

Make your own grassy meadow or plant banks, verges and other natural areas with dainty Primroses (Primula vulgaris) and Cowslips (Primula veris). Keep watered if conditions are dry and these hardy perennials will quickly establish, flowering and setting seed to slowly spread and cover the area with their progeny.

New varieties are continually being bred offering outstanding garden performance, larger flowers and better resistance to the vagaries of our weather. Although single-coloured flowers are always popular also look out for bicolours, double and rosebud types, plus wonderfully scented new varieties too. Bold blocks of primulas always look striking, but impressive displays can also be created by combining them with other spring bedding, flowering bulbs and foliage plants too. Small pot grown plants are available now in full flower, making them perfect for creating instant displays in any garden, patio or courtyard. Primulas are one of the most popular wildflowers too.

Primula enthusiasts often move on from growing bedding varieties to picking choice varieties of Auricula to grow and display in small terracotta pots on patios or shelved Auricula Theatres. A Victorian favourite, hundreds of exquisite varieties of these evergreen perennials have been bred over the years. Many have deeply coloured and patterned petals surrounding a white or golden eye, with rosettes of leathery leaves often intriguingly coated with a powdery bloom.

Get your garden ready for summer

ANTIQUES FAIR

Come and meet the dealer!

Don’t tuck your outdoor furniture into a dark, cramped corner this summer. Make space to enjoy an exciting al-fresco lifestyle on a new deck! We have all tolerated a less than perfect outdoor scenario at some time. Often familiarity with our home environment can prevent us from seeing what could be done to make quite transformational changes in the way we view and use the space around us. A simple deck can completely transform a garden, particularly if used to counter a difficult slope or form a link between awkward corners and shapes. A modest timber structure can easily provide a whole new outdoor area in which to dine, entertain, or perhaps facilitate a safely controlled kiddies’ play area. To be effective the design doesn’t have to be restricted to a single expanse of decking finished in the same old boring colour either. A deck can fulfill many design ambitions, punctuated with planting beds, a pond or water feature, or maybe a trellis or a pergola to create a practical and attractive seating or barbeque area, often terraced with a balustrade to complete the scene. Chris Nichols, owner of Decking and Pergolas says: “The joy I sense in people when they see and use a finished scheme for the first time is so rewarding. My decision to create this business a few years ago has been life changing for me, and with plenty of generous testimonials to back this up, it can be life changing for my clients too.”

John & the team welcome you to….

The Oakley Arms BREWOOD

The Oakley Arms sits on the outskirts of Brewood but is a pub well within the hearts of the locals who drop by on horseback or bicycle or along with their dogs during country rambles. We are lucky enough to have the most fabulous lake which can be seen from many rooms within the pub and is flanked by our stone terrace which is the most wonderful place to dine on sunny days.

We like to think of ourselves as a charming pub with well-spaced rooms with wooden floors and roaring fires, a well-stocked bar at the centre of all things and a beautiful garden room filled with light. Our menus have their roots in modern British cooking, with a hint of the more exotic about them. The Oakley Arms, Kiddemore Green Road, Brewood, Staffordshire ST19 9BQ

Leek & cheddar tart

by Rosie Radford of Caws Cheese & Deli, Leg Street, Oswestry

Ingredients: (Serves 6-8) 250g (8oz) shortcrust pastry 400g (13oz) leeks 25g (1oz) butter Fresh thyme chopped up 125g (4oz) cheddar cheese (we recommend Snowdonia Green Thunder) 150ml (¼pint) whipping cream 3 medium eggs

Method:

Warm the oven up to 180°C.

Roll out the pastry and line a 23cm (9in) flan tin.

Line the pastry with foil and press the foil against the pastry. Chill the pastry for 30 minutes.

Bake the pastry in the centre of the oven for 15 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes until the pastry is starting to go golden. Take the pastry out of the oven while you make the filling. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C.

Trim the leeks and wash them. Shake them dry and slice. Heat the butter in a large frying pan with 1 tbsp water.

Add the leeks, cover and cook for 5 minutes until softened.

Beat together the thyme, cheese (use all the cheese apart from 40g) , cream and eggs . Add leeks and season.

Pour into the flan case.

Crumble the remaining cheese on top of the filling and return to the oven on gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Bake for 30 minutes or until the filling is just set.

• For an extra surprise, remove the cakes from the cases. Push an apple corer into each end of the cakes and remove a section of cake. Fill the hollows with more conserve. Return a ‘plug’ of the removed sponge to hold it in place and pop the cakes back in the cases.

Talented musician produces album to raise funds for pancreatic cancer Ryan Yard, a composer from Newport, is producing his own album of melodic contemporary classical music to raise money for a charity close to his heart Pancreatic Cancer Action. Ryan has been motivated to create the album as his mum, Christine, from Somerset, was sadly diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in September 2017. Shortly after her first chemotherapy session, Christine’s husband, Chester, suddenly died. Ryan says “He was heartbroken for my mum and literally died of a broken heart. It has put a great strain on us as a family and although I live 150 miles away I have made frequent trips home to help my mum.

“My fundraiser target is the money required to pay the musicians and studio and all additional money would go to your charity. I must stress this is a non-profit album for me and I will get no money for it.” mum has been hit by this very cancer and the impact to her life and those around her are beyond words. “We can’t beat pancreatic cancer fully...yet, but we can raise awareness and make sure that people know just how bad it can be. “My new album is dedicated to everybody affected by this cruel and merciless disease. One of the reasons I compose music is for the power it can have over our emotions and feelings. I hope that this album will touch, inspire and raise the spirits of all those that hear it and bring peace to those who desperately need it.

Pancreatic Cancer Action is committed to working towards earlier diagnosis of the disease so that surgery, currently the only cure, is made available to the sufferer. The charity fund research into early diagnosis, provide medical education programmes, and launch awareness campaigns. Ali Stunt, founder of the charity, said: “We are delighted that Ryan is giving his time to support Pancreatic Cancer Action in such an incredible creation. We are very sorry to hear about Ryan’s mum, it is lovely that he is helping to raise awareness and funds for this disease.

“My fundraiser target is the money required to pay the musicians and studio and all additional money would go to your charity. I must stress this is a non-profit album for me and I will get no money for it.

“We rely solely on donations from the public and thanks to people like Ryan that we can continue our vital work. Please back him in his fundraising efforts so that we can continue research into early diagnosis and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.”

“Everyone that donates gets a download of the album and those that donate £10 or more will receive a CD and other goodies.”

You can donate to Ryan by visiting www.fundrazr.com and searching for ‘classical album in aid of pancreatic cancer’

Pancreatic cancer is the UK’s fifth biggest cancer killer. The survival rate is just 5% which is the lowest of any cancer.

Top tips for perfect wedding photos Shropshire photographer Jane Langton-Evans gives us her top tips for creating picture perfect memories of your big day.

Do your homework – early! Look at different photography websites and note the styles as everyone does things differently. The two main styles tend to be: 1. Documentary, which is completely undirected except for a few simple group shots 2. Traditional wedding photography which is staged Meet up with photographers. It’s really important to feel comfortable with the person you choose to photograph your wedding as they are going to be there all day, so you need to feel like you can trust them. Reading testimonials and finding out more about how they work will help you determine whether they are for you. Give yourself time to do plenty of research, as wedding photographers are typically booked one to two years in advance. The cost of wedding photography Determining how important your photographs will be to you will give you a better idea of how much you could spend. After all, once the dress has been worn, you have walked down the aisle in those shoes, you have cut the cake, eaten the food and danced the night away, what do you have left to remember other than the memories of what you managed to take away and maybe some half decent phone snaps from friends? After the day has come and gone and you have a stunning collection of images from your day, you can relive the day over and over. 52 | It’s beautiful

Expect to pay anything from £1000 - £3000 and even more for the high end of wedding photography. Friends with a camera Are any of your guests wedding photographers? If so, perhaps they might agree to shoot your day for you. Beware of just asking friends with a ‘big camera’ to photograph your day. You could be disappointed if they don’t get the shots you want or the quality you had hoped for. The camera is not the professional, it’s the person behind the camera who is doing all the work. Photographers understand light, composition and flattering angles to capture your day in their authentic style. Bridal prep and light Choose a room for your photographs that has a beautiful window with natural light. Photographs are going to look and feel much better than having been

taken in a dark, dimly lit room. If you are hiring a make-up artist, they will recommend a good place to do it for great light anyway. Plan your photographs I believe that photography is a really important part of your day - but it shouldn’t take over your day. It’s well worth finding out how much time your photographer needs at certain times of the day, especially if you have a lot of travelling involved. If you want big group shots, ask the best man to be the one who gathers the family and friends needed. Give him a list before the wedding so he can be prepared. Group shots can be done in 15- 20 minutes if things are well organised, leaving you to enjoy your day. Time together I generally spend 15 minutes with the couple to get some lovely shots of them together. My couples love this part because it’s usually the only

It’s well worth finding out how much time your photographer needs at certain times of the day, especially if you have a lot of travelling involved

time they have on the day together. One thing that my couples like about the way I work is that I take minimal time from their day and no one’s waiting around for ages, so this is something to think about when hiring a photographer - what do you want from your day? Do you want to spend hours having ‘photographs taken’ or do you want them to be taken as the day is just happening rather than staging most parts? Leave extra time If you have a timing plan in place, remember: things always take longer than you think. People can get stuck in traffic, run late, things sometimes go wrong. Even the ceremony can often run over and then there are all the people that

must exit the church, try to factor this in to your wedding timetable. Photographing accessories If you want accessories like shoes, dresses and jewellery photographed, then it’s a good idea to make sure these things are unwrapped and placed out, so the photographer doesn’t have to spend time doing this and potentially missing really good shots. Being organised ahead of the arrival means that the time can then be used to capture the flow of what’s happening around the place. It’s all about the lighting Light is really important for photography and looking at photographers’ websites you will be able to see how they use light in the way they present their photographs. If you’re getting married in winter months and your church ceremony is at 3pm, by the time you leave the church it is going to be getting dark, so I would suggest having an earlier ceremony so that there is time to get really lovely shots with plenty of natural light.

After the wedding I always feel like in bridal advice the emphasis is on the preparing for the big day, but what about after the wedding? Popularly now you’ll find that most photography wedding collections include the final images as digital files and the amount of people that say to me; ‘they’re in a drawer somewhere,’ or ‘we haven’t really looked at them since we got married,’ is disappointing. I recommend having hard copies of your wedding photographs - digital copies are great to have but if you’re not doing anything with them then it’s such a waste. Why invest thousands of pounds on something nobody will see? Have a beautiful wedding album made of your favourites, have some special frames made for the wall. Remember once you have invested in the photographs you need to make the most out of them, enjoy them, display and love them! Beautiful bridesmaids

S

pring/Summer 2018 bridesmaids are bringing a host of new trends to wedding wear. Darker colours with pretty adornments are popular but traditional ruffles and frills still remain strong, although this year they are tiered. The 2018 colour of the year is showing through in bridesmaid trends with ultra-violet hues. If your girl gang don’t want to be in the same dress, try some bridesmaid separates and if they aren’t really into dresses, try them in a beautifully sleek jumpsuit – one of the newest trends for bridesmaids this year. The cold shoulder from last summer is still going strong and comes in lots of colours and styles. Florals are a powerful spring statement and look adorable on younger bridesmaids or as hair accessories as a nod to the season.

Festival to celebrate food from Field to Fork A food festival with a difference is coming to the West Midlands in 2018 – thanks to a partnership between Shropshire Festivals and Harper Adams University. The Field to Fork Festival will be open to everyone, free of charge, at the University’s campus in Edgmond, near Newport on April 28, 2018. “The Field to Fork Festival will celebrate the story of our food from where and how it is grown, all the way

62

to our plates,” explained University Marketing Director, Simon Pride. “We all know what food is and why we love to eat it and to share it. How it can comfort us and fuel our lives. “But how much though do we actually give to where our food comes from, and how it is produced? Harper Adams is well-placed to share the story of food, given our expertise in delivering education for every point of the food chain – from field to fork.

“With that as our theme, and supported by the regional Higher Horizons outreach team, we’re setting out to lay on a fantastic one-day festival that promises fun for all the family, plenty of opportunities to explore and buy food products and a whole day of entertainment as well as education.” Learn more at FieldtoForkFestival.com Shropshire Festivals Director Beth Heath and business students Joe Grundy and Sian Williamson

Leadership award for grammar school Wolverhampton Grammar School has won ‘senior leadership team of the year’ at the prestigious TES Independent School Awards. Kathy Crewe-Read, head of Wolverhampton Grammar School comments: “The work of a great School has been recognised by TES. To be selected as the best of the best by our peers and industry experts is a great testament to the hard work and commitment of every member of our community.” Philip Sims, chairman of the board of directors at Wolverhampton Grammar School added “For me, there is an undoubted link between being judged “excellent” in all categories of the School’s activities by the Independent Schools Inspectorate last year and our Senior Management Team being recognised as the best team nationally by the Times Educational Supplement this year. Our head and her team illustrate outstanding leadership every day, ensuring that we provide the very best education for all our students.” Winners attended a black-tie event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, hosted by author, broadcaster, actor and entertainer Gyles Brandreth, where more than 400 attendees celebrated all that is outstanding in independent schools.

Mathematicians celebrate success Twenty-six senior school girls from Moreton Hall have been awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in recognition of their achievement in the UKMT Maths Challenges. Tested by lively, intriguing multiple-choice questions, they pitted their wits against the country’s highest performers. Awards go to the top-scoring 40% of participants in the ratio of 3:2:1. Lower 5 students, Daisy, Lyra and Cici achieved the Gold award and Olympiad. This places them in a select group comprising of the top 500 mathematicians, nationally, for their year group. Mr Quantrell commented: “The Maths department is so proud of the girls. This is a prestigious competition, entered by few pupils owing to the level of difficulty. We are thrilled that so many Moreton students have achieved success.”

Education Parents are being invited to find out for themselves what makes Packwood so popular with an open day on 17 March. Parents of pupils at independent prep school Packwood Haugh in Ruyton XI Towns cite many reasons for choosing the school for their sons and daughters and top of the list is often the sheer breadth of education and experience on offer.

discover and develop new skills and interests. Of course, not all will excel in all areas but the very process of striving for success engenders in the children those crucial character traits of grit and determination that will be invaluable to them in the future.

Above: Under 12 fencing team (L to R) Casper Buckley, Hal Cowan, Finn Bowdler, Charlie Weston; Year 8 Packwood music scholar Eve Leslie

The ethos at Packwood is to educate the whole child through a rigorous and stimulating curriculum as well as a far-reaching range of extra-curricular options - the school develops pupils’ talents wherever they may lie.

“The current academic year is a special one in Packwood’s history marking the school’s 125th anniversary and the children’s achievements so far give us all the more reason to celebrate. I am enormously proud of their efforts in all areas of school life and am confident that more success will follow.

Packwood Headmaster, Clive SmithLangridge, elaborates: “Packwood is a preparatory school and ultimately, that means our raison d’être is to prepare our pupils for life at senior school and beyond. A Packwood education provides a myriad of opportunities to

“Packwood’s top year pupils who will move on to senior school at the end of this year have already amassed a range of scholarship awards in music, sports, art and drama. The Under 13 girls’ cricket team is enjoying success in the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket

Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Five members of Packwood’s fencing club have qualified for the GB individual national championships, and the swimming team came away from a recent IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) meet with no fewer than seven gold medals. The Music Department is celebrating with the news that one of Packwood’s choristers has won a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. “We would be delighted to welcome parents to visit us on the 17th and see everything that Packwood has to offer.” Visit www.packwood-haugh.co.uk to find out more.

CARL HAS GOT IT NAILED A fungal nail specialist with an innovative treatment for fungal nail infections has started a mobile laser therapy service. Carl Mairs, a fully qualified practitioner and member of the Aesthetic Laser Technicians Association and the British Medical Laser Association, says two 20-minute, pain free treatments is all it takes to destroy nail fungus forever. The treatment, says Carl, is clinically proven: “It’s the only fully safe and properly effective treatment and it’s cheaper and easier than getting treatment through the NHS. Current alternatives involve highly toxic antifungals and medicine to deal with the symptoms the antifungals cause. “Figures show that the traditional method of treatment has a reinfection rate of over 22% after two years and higher after five years. The treatment I use is at least

95% effective and doesn’t affect the health or wellbeing of the client.” The treatment was developed by dermatologists in six European countries after exhaustive studies showed that using short pulse Nd:YAG lasers targeted the pigment in the fungus to destroy the infection. The treatment can be carried out in any home or workplace around Llangollen, Oswestry and Wrexham and requires only a private room and access to electric. Carl also offers a consulting room at his own home in Froncysyllte if preferred.

Carl has been a laser practitioner since 2010, when he set up a laser clinic in Chester, specialising in pigment removal. In 2016 he refreshed his skills and specialised in fungal nail treatments. Treatments start at just £30 and Carl’s clients have already been impressed with the revolutionary treatment that promises no pain and no side effects.

Shrewsbury super-mum fundraising for Harry Day When Sally Johnson’s son Harry died at the age of seven after a short fight with an aggressive cancer, she was determined to use her experience to help other families and children going through the same experience... Three years on, The Harry Johnson Trust has raised almost £250,000 to support children and teenagers in Shropshire who have been diagnosed with cancer. This spring Harry’s mum is urging local schools and businesses to raise money by supporting Harry Day on Friday 15 June. Sally explains why it is held on that particular date: “We were told Harry was going to die on 16th June 2014 and he died just four weeks later. Rather than this date be full of sadness, we wanted to turn it into something positive and purposeful. Harry never felt sorry for himself, and he laughed and remained joyful and positive during his nine-month illness, and so Harry Day was created. We ask schools and businesses to do something fun and joyful on a day in June, as near to 16th June as they can, so that their pupils and staff can join in with fundraising for us in the spirit that Harry showed each day.” The website, www.harryday.org.uk is full of simple fundraising ideas for Harry Day, including dress in orange (Harry’s favourite colour) and dino sweepstake (Harry loved dinosaurs). Sally said: “We would like people to have a little fun and to do something different to a normal day, even if it’s just for an hour. Harry loved life so much, he took every opportunity to enjoy himself and loved to be with his family, friends and teachers. We would like people to do something that would bring this to their school or workplace - something

fun, something enjoyable and something memorable, just like Harry! In return, we’d welcome a small donation for taking part.” The charity need around £60k a year in order to grant every request for support, and to be able to contribute to the future sustainability of the children’s oncology ward in Telford; maintaining the home from home provision they strive to offer and the renewal and resourcing of the play and IT equipment they need for children to use on the ward during stays, which can be for weeks at a time. “A donation of £3 buys a fleece pillowcase,” adds Sally, “which is priceless to a child with a bare head trying to get a comfortable night’s sleep. We appreciate every £1 donated and no donation is too small!” The Harry Johnson Trust aim to be there for local families who have a child with cancer, whatever that need may be. “We hope we are there for them from diagnosis to recovery, and also should the

worst happen. We have helped pay for children’s funerals and I go to meet parents who want to chat to someone who has been there too. I don’t offer advice, and don’t claim to be an expert, but I’m a good listener, always have tissues, and can signpost people to possible sources of support.” Sally ends: “There are so many wonderful national charities who support these children, but during Harry’s treatment we noticed a gap in support locally and so we wanted to try and help fill this gap a little bit, and just be there if we could be to make things a little easier. The staff at our local hospitals are nothing short of angels, and they do all they can and more to get these brave children the support they need, but it isn’t always easy when the charity doesn’t have representation at the hospital. As we are so local, the ward staff can make referrals quickly, easily and it makes personalising our help much easier.” To find out more about The Harry Johnson Trust or to donate, visit www.theharryjohnsontrust.co.uk.

New pelvic floor class is a diamond! Zest Ladies Health and Fitness gym which already runs a wide variety of successful fitness classes has introduced ‘Diamond Pilates’– a specialist Pilates-based exercise routine designed to improve and maintain pelvic floor health. “Poor pelvic floor muscles are a bit of a taboo subject but we should be talking about it more,” says Pauline Lacey of Zest Ladies Health and Fitness, “childbirth can have a very adverse effect on the pelvic floor muscles and if they are to be restored, pelvic floor muscle therapy should begin as soon possible.”

Men are even worse at talking about these issues: Recently prostate cancer is said to be the biggest cancer risk amongst the population surpassing breast cancer. ‘Man Engine’ at Blists Hill

Whittington International Chamber Music Festival

The largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain, the Man Engine, is coming to Blists Hill Victorian Town on Saturday 14 April when it will be the ‘star’ of spectacular daytime and evening events. Weighing nearly 40 tonnes, the Man Engine crawls at 4.5m high and ‘transforms’ to stand at nearly 12m. Engineered in Cornwall to mark the 10th anniversary of the county’s World Heritage status, the Man Engine is touring venues across the UK to celebrate Britain’s rich industrial heritage. The Man Engine will be centre stage at the amazing and spectacular hour-long ceremony at 2pm and 8.30pm when the audience will be asked to help wake the puppet from its slumber. Bring along your enthusiasm, energy and loudest voice to help the Man Engine Team raise the sleeping giant to its full height with songs and chants.

Bring along your enthusiasm, energy and loudest voice to help the Man Engine Team raise the sleeping giant to its full height The day time event is perfect for families as young visitors are also invited to join in the Miners’ Parade and have a go at printing, candle dipping and building a mini steam engine, amongst many other hands-on activities. For further information, call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge.org.uk. To win a family ticket (two adults, three children) to go along to the Man Engine event, simply answer the following question: How much does the Man Engine weigh?

Whittington’s sixth music festival in the church opposite the village’s moated castle runs from 15-20 May and is an exclusively Brit ‘Fantasia’. Featuring no less than 17 British classical composers, it includes a reminder that many of them got their inspiration from our island’s vibrant folk traditions. If you’re a Shropshire folkie, you’ll love the Friday concert with violinist Donald Grant. For most of the week Donald will be playing music by such classical favourites as Elgar and Vaughan Williams with the Elias Quartet and other world-class artists. Lesser known composers also feature in the programme including suffragette Dame Ethel Smyth and Oswestry’s Sir Henry Walford Davies. In the centenary year of the 1918 Armistice the Sunday concert will feature works composed that year. A ticket costs £15 (free for 8-25 year olds) and is available at Rowanthorn in Oswestry’s Old Chapel Court, Whittington Post Office and online www.whittingtonmusicfestival.org.uk Win a pair of tickets to see one of the six concerts this May by answering this question: How many classical composers does the event feature?

LAST WORD Strong is the new beautiful If you’ve been watching the TV, listening to the radio or reading the newspapers this month (February) you won’t have failed to be dazzled by the Winter Olympics, held this year in PyeongChang, South Korea. And, on the centenary of voting rights for women, it’s only apt that 2018 should be the year of the female athlete. Not since London 2012, have we seen such a display of female sporting prowess; Lizzie Yarnold and Laura Deas plummeting head-first at up to 80mph down a steep and treacherous ice track on a tiny sledge in the Skeleton racing and Izzy Atkin literally flying down the ski slopes in a gravity-defying slopestyle display. What a rush to see our girls performing so well despite the challenge of athletes having to contend with our obvious climate restrictions. Lizzie Yarnold - Britain’s most decorated Winter Olympian - is the first ever British athlete to successfully defend a Winter Olympics title, after winning gold in Sochi four years ago. She was also the first gold medal winner for Team GB at this year’s Winter Olympics. What makes it even more impressive is that she wasn’t 100% healthy as she fought off the effects of a virus to compete. At the time of writing Britain have now equalled their Winter Games success – collecting four medals in total, and the opportunity to win even more. 82

| It’s beautiful

Laura Deas became Wales’ first Winter Olympic medallist after winning bronze in Skeleton racing on what has become known as Super Saturday after Britain won three medals in one day – the most successful day in 94 years after Britain took two medals from Chamonix in 1924. British women have won a medal at every Skeleton event since the sport was reintroduced to the Games in 2002. Britain’s first ever skiing medal was won in style by 19-year-old teenage sensation Izzy Atkin. Despite the confusion from viewers over her American accent (she was born in Boston, USA), she comes from a Birminghambred father and Malaysian mother and maintains a dual heritage passport. She’s also the youngest ever Olympic skiing medal winner. Her Bronze medal has made history and no doubt changed the course of her life and inspired many others. Hopes are also high for the women’s curling team, led by Eve Muirhead who led her team to snatch victory against Switzerland to maintain their challenge for a semi-final place. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes

roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in a subject. The four years of toil and training since Sochi 2014 require levels of commitment most of us can’t even imagine. Hours of planning, training and finetuning their performances for their one chance to win. Despite the lack of snow for around 364 days of the year in Britain, our athletes will have been training an average of six hours a day, six days a week for 12 months a year. In the days before the Winter Olympics started, temperatures in PyeongChang were reportedly so low that ski equipment had warped with some suggesting it is the coldest games on record. No problem for our female warriors. These are women who work hard for their goals, look healthy and show how a display of female solidarity can bring professional success. These powerful female athletes should stand proud on the podiums, not only winners of their respective sport, but role models for all women – dedicated, passionate, career-driven and successful.
