Summer eThics

There’s a huge emphasis on ethical businesses at the moment, so what exactly is available on the high street from the fashion world? Ethical isn’t just about going organic or vegan, but also covers the issues around waste, fabric sourcing and employment. If you’re imagining linen fabrics and beige colours, think again. We’ve trawled the internet and found these items from brands with strong sustainable values that fit in with this summer’s trends of pastel colours, strong denim, Crayola colours and fussy trims.

STYLE This is how you’ll find me... in a white vest by Victoria Jane McKenna

Using what you already have in your wardrobe for a date, meeting, afternoon trip or wedding can be a challenge. The key is in the small details, so here I show you how to use a simple vest in a variety of outfits. Dressed up or down, it’s a key piece.

Occasion MEETING ▼

Occasion

Team a plain vest with texture and colour to smarten things up. Resting a jacket over your shoulders gives a glamorous look and any jewellery will draw attention elsewhere.

Casual Afternoon

A pair of trousers can be smart or casual, put with the vest and flat shoes this outfit would be perfectly comfortable out shopping or just going about your business.

Meeting

I aim for a simple, strong look for meetings and the vest is great for a clean crisp look on top. With the warm weather this is more forgiving than a shirt and you can shed the cardigan for an evening feel.

Sunday Lunch

You can do anything with jeans and a vest, the key is in the accessories here. A scarf will fill the gap instead of a necklace. Choose a denim jacket to keep it super casual or something a bit different like I’ve done here. 8 | It’s beautiful

Shropshire firm marks 7th anniversary with new website An architectural design firm has marked its seventh anniversary with a new website. Ke-design, who were founded in Oswestry in 2011 and have now expanded to Shrewsbury work with clients across Shropshire and beyond, and this month celebrate their seventh birthday. Founder & architectural designer, Craig Marston says it’s been a fantastic seven years with continual business growth. “When we started out seven years ago, we had no client base or contacts – fast forward to now and we work on some fantastic projects all over Shropshire, Cheshire and

“By working together with our clients from initial concept to final implementation, we strive to create innovative structures that will endure generations.”

Craig Marston

Powys. A lot of our business is from referrals, but we also have a lot of web enquires and after seven years we thought it was time the website got a revamp” Ke-design have recently started working with a developer on projects as far as Derby and Mansfield. The company have built a reputation for designing and delivering successful projects. “We provide a tailored response to suit each individual’s brief. We have a lively and friendly working environment making it an enjoyable experience for the client,” says Craig.

The design studio garnered attention after exhibiting at Build It Live in Manchester and the Home Building & Renovating Show in Birmingham. The new website is a showcase of some of the best projects created by Craig and his team and includes glowing testimonials. “The website is important to us because new and potential clients want to go back and see what you’ve done. Whether a new housing development, a one-off self-build or extension of an existing home – quality of design is important and the public and developers are realising this and are coming to us for this service, so it’s important we can showcase great design on the site.” Visit www.ke-design.co.uk to find out more.

Interiors

The Electric Jungle trend takes the shapes and objects of the natural world – we’re talking tropical leaves, animal print and the odd chameleon – and makes them, well, unnatural. They’re spliced from their usual context, recoloured in a neon palette and made to feel super edgy. This means incredible patterns, bold colours and lots of neon lighting. Go wild! Gardening

Colourful clematis

From bold blooms the size of tea plates to delicate nodding bells adorning a garden arch, clematis are versatile and colourful climbers that no garden should be without. Whether left to clamber-up a trellis panel to cover walls and fences or trained over a pergola, clematis are a wonderfully diverse family with varieties to choose for flowers in every season of the year. Large-flowered hybrids are some of the most impressive, coming into their own during the summer months, and these are joined by daintier flowering varieties of clematis viticella that continue blooming into autumn Dozens of clematis varieties are available, with new ones being introduced every year, so visit local garden centres and nurseries to pick the ones that appeal. Colours and forms vary widely, with something to suit every colour scheme. Most enjoy their heads in the sun, but some, like pure white ‘Alabast’, will also grow in semi-shade. Don’t feel obliged to provide a structure or trellis for support as many clematis can simply be planted in amongst shrubs and left to grow up through them for support. Some of the best suited for this are varieties of Clematis viticella, like rich-red ‘Madame Julia Correvon’

Clematis ‘Madame Julia Correvon’ ©Adam Pasco Media

whose summer flowers are followed by fluffy seed-heads. Choose compact varieties to grow in containers, trained up an ornamental obelisk or wigwam of canes or hazel poles. Several new dwarf and compact varieties have been introduced in recent years too, ideal for planting in tall pots and left to trail over the edges. Clematis are often partnered with climbing roses and honeysuckle up pillars and pergolas to create longlasting flower displays, but vibrant combinations can be created with virtually any other climbers or wall shrubs. It’s not hard to see why clematis have such irresistible charm, and with so many inspiring ways to include them within the garden and patio your colourful clematis collection is guaranteed to grow!

Shrewsbury’s hidden treasure These days the words “wow” and “amazing” and “I didn’t know this was here” are often heard bouncing through the air as people cross the threshold of Shrewsbury’s cathedral-sized Market Hall for the first time. For years the town’s covered market – cocooned inside one of Shrewsbury’s biggest and arguably one of its most easy to walk past buildings – was an almost hidden treasure, only known to those, who by some method or other, had come to hear about the exciting things going on inside. But it’s a secret no more that the Market Hall is a pretty special place to visit these days. A series of Saturday late nights, launched last year, started tongues wagging as the market turned into a night-time food and drink venue, serving everything from cocktails to speciality dishes and gourmet burgers. And then, earlier this year, Shrewsbury Market Hall was crowned ‘Britain’s Favourite Market 2018’ in the NABMA Great British Market Awards after a public vote and visits by a judging panel and a mystery shopper. Lots of publicity followed, including a little mention in The Times. “It’s been the icing on the cake, the accolade this market and its traders deserve after a decadelong transformation,” said market facilities manager Kate Gittins. The things that make this market great is its cool cafes and street food venues and an eclectic mix of stalls, offering everything from authentically-grown truly local fresh produce and artisan food and drink to original art, creative crafts, 38 | It’s beautiful

on-trend lifestyle boutiques and everything in between. It’s the place to come if you’re looking for vintage and retro collectables, a cool friendly bookshop selling pre-loved titles or a traditional barbershop. Then there’s the cult-status vinyl record shop, the mecca for strategy board game fans and the little wool shop that is tipped for awards. Dogs even have their own luxury boutique. And those looking for a quirky night out with a difference can savour Saturday nights at the

market on September 1 and November 3. From gin and wine bars to tapas, Thai and Indian or even a spot of twilight gift shopping, the market will be open until 10pm. The Market Hall, Claremont Street, Shrewsbury SY1 1HQ www.markethallshrewsbury.co.uk

Summer season June marks the official start of the summer food season. British produce really shines this month. Try broad beans and peas, delicious gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries to truly taste the best of the season.

Fresh pea and broad bean pasta (www.waitrose.com/recipes)

Get all the flavours of a summer garden with this fresh, zingy salad. Sweet peas and buttery broad beans offer the perfect balance to the lively balsamic and salty cheese. Serves: 4

Ingredients

300g Conchiglie Rigate 500g Peas, shelled 500g Broad beans, shelled 5 tbsp Pelagonia aivar 1 tbsp Olive oil 1 tsp Balsamic vinegar 75g Goat’s cheese or feta, crumbled 2 tbsp Chopped fresh chives

Method

Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling water for 12 minutes, or according to packet instructions, adding the peas and beans for the last 2–3 minutes. Drain well and cool under running water. Transfer to a large serving dish. Add the aivar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and toss together until the pasta is coated. Scatter over the cheese, chives and a good grinding of black pepper and chill until ready to serve.

Wild berry profiteroles Choux pastry is one of the simplest pastries to make and the results are stunning and light.

Ingredients

250g tub mascarpone cheese 175ml ready-made chilled Crème Anglaise or vanilla custard 4 generous tbsp Bonne Maman Strawberry & Wild Strawberry Conserve 200g mixed fresh summer fruits Icing sugar, to dust For the choux pastry 60g strong plain flour 50g unsalted butter, diced 2 large eggs

Method

Heat the oven to 200C, fan oven 180C, gas mark 6. Line 1 or 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. To make the pastry, sift the flour onto another sheet of parchment. Put the butter in a small saucepan with 150ml cold water. Heat gently until the butter has melted, then bring to the boil. When the liquid is bubbling furiously remove the pan from the heat and pour in all the flour off the paper. Beat with a wooden spoon until the flour has been blended into the liquid. Gradually beat in the eggs until the mixture is a thick, smooth and glossy paste. Drop tablespoons of the choux paste onto the baking sheets, leaving about 2.5cm between them. Bake the choux buns for 25 – 30 minutes or until golden and crisp. Turn of the oven, make a small slit in each bun and return to the oven for a further 2-3 minutes to dry out. Cool on a wire rack. Meanwhile, put the mascarpone in a bowl and gradually beat in the custard until smooth. When ready to serve, halve the profiteroles and put 1 tsp of Bonne Maman Strawberry & Wild Strawberry Conserve in the bottom of each one. Fill with the mascarpone custard and top with a mixture of fruits. Replace the tops and dust with icing sugar. Serve straight away.

It can’t have escaped your attention that Gin is huge and in 2017 we consumed almost 47 million bottles of the stuff. But what next for the unstoppable juniper juice? Whatever your taste, there is almost certainly a flavoured gin to suit your palate (cactus gin anyone?), but the spirit is only part of the cocktail. Mixologists are busy coming up with new and exciting accompaniments for our G&T’s - aided by the high-quality tonics now available. They can be classic, playful or adventurous. Such is the versatility of gin. Personally, I can never walk past a lonely Negroni. Those in the know, and by that I mean the buying Gods at top end supermarkets, believe that premium is the future. Some even say that the premium market will be worth as much as the cheap and cheerful market in just a few short years. One of these buyers noted that mass produced gin saw sales increase by 30%. Impressive enough, but the sales of the smaller craft brands with provenance, full flavour and a good story behind them, saw an increase north of 160%! One thing is for certain, we just can’t get enough of the nation’s favourite spirit.

Recipe

Summer refreshers Now the weather is getting warmer most people are looking for something refreshing and cooling to drink. Cider is usually extremely popular over the summer and Stonehouse Brewery has just launched Oswestry’s own sparkling cider, Elevate. Elevate is a fruity and refreshing cider that bursts with apple flavour, the perfect fruity drink on a warm day. Craft ale drinkers are also looking for something refreshing to drink, and we can see more and more people trying some alternative styles such as Saisons and Sours. Both of these have far sharper flavours than traditional British Ales and have a clean, sour aftertaste. Obviously in warm weather people are drinking lots of gin, either as gin and tonic, a gin and lemonade spritzer, gin cocktails or even straight sipping gin. While some people still prefer traditional juniper led gins the craze for fruity and crazy gins still continues. This summer the hottest gins to look out for are Cherry Bakewell, any orange/marmalade gins, Sweet Violet, and of course, for all Oswestrians, our own Henstone’s.

Summer berry brioche Recipe development by Moyra Fraser. (Serves 6-8) This is a play on the classic Summer pudding – it has the same delicious flavour and texture but without the worry of turning it out! Serve with a generous dollop of crème fraiche.

Ingredients 6 tbsp Bonne Maman Black Cherry Conserve 200ml pomegranate and raspberry juice 225g brioche bread, cut into large, bite-sized pieces 225g fresh raspberries or blueberries 225g fresh, pitted cherries 225g strawberries, halved or sliced Crème fraiche, to serve

Method Put the Bonne Maman Black Cherry Conserve and juice into a small saucepan and heat together gently until the conserve has melted. Bring to the boil and bubble for 2-3 minutes until lightly thickened and syrupy. Tip all the brioche into a deep, glass serving bowl and pour over the warm syrup. Put a small plate on top, press down and add a weight. Chill overnight.

Spoon the fresh fruit over the brioche and top with spoonfuls of crème fraiche before serving.

Cook’s tips

We used pomegranate juice as it’s not too sweet but any red fruit juice such as blackcurrant or blueberry could also be used with a squeeze of lemon juice.

The Oakley Arms sits on the outskirts of Brewood but is a pub well within the hearts of the locals who drop by on horseback or bicycle or along with their dogs during country rambles. We are lucky enough to have the most fabulous lake which can be seen from many rooms within the pub and is flanked by our stone terrace which is the most wonderful place to dine on sunny days.

We like to think of ourselves as a charming pub with well-spaced rooms with wooden floors and roaring fires, a well-stocked bar at the centre of all things and a beautiful garden room filled with light. Our menus have their roots in modern British cooking, with a hint of the more exotic about them.

Take a seat at...

The Lime Kiln Porth-y-waen, near Oswestry After a bank holiday weekend away at the wonderful seaside town of New Quay, Wales and a warm, sticky car journey back home, my partner and I decided to stop off for a spot of lunch. We had heard that the Lime Kiln in Porth-y-waen was under new management and the food was excellent, so we stopped off for a well-earned lunch. As soon as we walked into the pub, we were greeted by Sara, the new manager who was extremely welcoming. She explained that she had only recently taken over and was happy to have such a wonderful country pub. She emphasised her support of local producers and mentioned Keegans Butchers in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llynclys Hall Farm Shop. We had a lovely ice cold refreshing drink whilst choosing from their excellent menu. With a great choice of starters including crab and prawn salad, whitebait and pate with homemade chutney to mention just a few, we decided on the smoked salmon and crème fresh croutes and I chose the pan seared scallops with beetroot puree. It seemed only a few moments and our starters arrived, and the smell just enveloped the restaurant. My scallops were delicious and moist and with the beetroot puree providing the perfect accompaniment – a lovely consistency whilst not overpowering the flavour and texture of the scallops. My partner Steve’s smoked salmon and crème fraiche croutes were a generous portion and with the mixture of crème and crunch were just delicious! Yes, I had to try one as they looked so good. 44 | It’s beautiful

“Steve’s smoked salmon and crème fraiche croutes were a generous portion and with the mixture of crème and crunch were just delicious!“ After a full-bodied glass of merlot our main meals soon arrived, with a lovely choice of homecooked food Steve chose the bacon cheese burger served with homemade chips and I selected off the daily specials board and went for the chicken and bacon salad which looked fresh, crisp and very tasty. Steve’s beef burger looked and smelled amazing also, it would take a healthy appetite to finish the dish, but I knew he was up to the challenge! With a burger stack which consisted of bacon, cheese, onion, lettuce and tomato on a soft floured burger bun, the hardest decision was how to attempt to eat it. After cutting it in half and devouring it, he did not prove me wrong - the slate was completely cleared, not even one of the delicious homemade chips was leftover. It was a complete triumph as Steve told me that he did not even have room for a pudding, a rarity. My salad consisted of tasty succulent chicken pieces and crispy bacon served on a bed of mixed green leaves and a drizzle of wholegrain mustard dressing

and with a side portion of the homemade chips it as the prefect lunch. We were asked if we would like anything off the desert menu and despite the choice of refreshing lemon cheesecake or homemade apple strudel we could not eat another thing. I have to say our unplanned stop off at the Lime Kiln was a wonderful end to our long weekend and we will definitely be visiting again. This little country treasure is a wonderful family friendly pub where traditional homecooked pub food is available at both lunchtime and evenings seven days a week. Call 01691 830111 to book a table. Medical Treatments I Cosmetic Treatments

Dr. Clare Patterson CONSULTANT DERMATOLOGIST

"Your well-being is at the core of everything I do..." I'm a consultant and I've been in dermatology since 2001. I've worked in hospitals and clinics all over the UK. I’ve also worked in Australia, where I completed a PhD in skin cancer, but I recently decided to move back home to Shropshire to be close to family.

TESTIMONIALS:

My medical training means that I can see through all the latest skincare fads, and my friendly, informal consultations are designed to help you establish a simple and effective treatment plan that will bring your skin back into balance. I also offer a range of treatments that can firm, tone and smooth the skin, including Botox and dermal fillers. I’ll work with you to decide on the most appropriate course of treatment, so that you’ll leave looking natural and relaxed, rather than frozen or fixed.

“Dr Clare is my secret weapon! She quickly and painlessly removed several unsightly skin tags that had been bothering me for years. She also prescribed a simple, inexpensive regimen to tackle the melasma that developed during my first pregnancy.” HELEN “Dr Clare is very easy to talk to and absolutely understands my skincare concerns. She’s much more friendly and approachable than my GP, who always made me feel that my hormonal breakouts were too trivial to discuss.” EMILY

I understand the impact that problem skin can have on your self-confidence, so I offer dedicated teen skin consultations to help bring stressed, hormonal skin back into balance. My specialist paediatric training means that I’m also qualified to work with younger children who suffer from common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis; I'm a mum myself, so I know how distressing skin irritations can be for young children and their families. I'm an experienced skin surgeon, and I'm fully-trained to remove anything unsightly or suspicious. Thanks to my specialist training in Australia, I have a special interest in skin cancer checks and mole removal. Many of my patients schedule annual checks; these are quick and easy, and give great peace of mind. Unlike many high street practitioners, I’m a fully trained Doctor specialising in skin, and have a thorough understanding of anatomy. This means that I can help you to hold back the years with BOTOX® and dermal fillers, while maintaining a natural, but refreshed, appearance.

“Thanks to Dr Clare, my skin has never looked this good. My adult acne began to improve after my first consultation six months on, my complexion is clear enough to go without make-up.” AMANDA

free. They are free from harsh chemicals, sulfates and parabens. “The Scientific Advisory board created the products by hand selecting natural oils and ingredients and combining them with cutting edge technology to help every hair type achieve optimum results.” Megan, who moved to Telford with her husband who is based at RAF Cosford, previously worked as a hairdresser in America. She launched the product range along with Jodi Bowring, of Apley. Products for both men and women include hydration shampoo, replenish masque, restore leave-in conditioner, revive shampoo, reshape root lifter, repair shampoo and conditioner, blow out cream and many more. The key ingredients are rejuveniqe oil, capixyl, a red clover extract, procataline, a pea extract and crodasorb, a UV absorber.

New hair care product taking Telford by storm A new hair care product has been launched in Telford which aims to revolutionise the way hair is treated Monat, a vegan and naturally based hair range, started in North America and Canada but only launched in the UK in May.

Customers have a consultation with Megan or Jodi to discuss what they currently like about their hair and what they would want to improve, before the market partners specifically choose products to suit the customer needs and target the areas to improve. “It has been great to do research pre-launch and see the difference in not only their hair, but people themselves,” Megan added. “Monat is creating a healthy hair revolution and we all know having great and healthy hair makes you feel much better about yourselves.

The name derives from modern nature and products combine the best of nature with cutting edge science to provide effective solutions to all hair concerns.

“I have seen very skeptical people transform their hair after one wash and those with very specific issues which they’ve been searching for a cure for a long time finally feel comfortable and happy with their do.

It has been introduced in Telford by Megan Boardman, of Donnington, who is originally from Nebraska in America and heard about the products while back home visiting family last year.

“Sometimes the before and after pictures even shock me still. Seeing - and experiencing - really is believing so I look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to see what this is all about.”

She said: “The success seen in the states and Canada is a testimony to the outstanding and revolutionary products.

For more information about the product or to contact Megan visit meganboardman.mymonat.com, email megmboardman@gmail.com or call 07481 146 710.

“In the last year the company has seen a 700% growth, Monat has created a healthy hair movement that has not only helped people have beautiful hair but also given them a stable, sustainable business. “I couldn’t wait to get involved once I’d heard about it and used the products myself - that is always when people realise it’s true impact. “I have always struggled with my hair - needing more of it and needing to tame it, as well as struggling to find time to maintain it with a very active toddler in tow - so I was very excited as soon as I started using it and couldn’t wait to bring it back to the UK. “Monat’s products are anti-ageing, vegan, and cruelty 50 | It’s beautiful

Wedding venue

How we gave it a year on national television In her own words, business woman and star of ITV’s Give it a Year, Katrina Boydon reveals what it was really like making the show that put her glamping, wedding and events venue, Barnutopia, on a national stage. After living abroad for many years, my husband Steve and I moved back to Britain in 2014 and set up a successful glamping site at Tanycoed Farm near Oswestry. We pondered what to do with the long barn on the property. Too big to use for accommodation, the barn had not been used for cattle in over 25 years. Previously an army barracks at Park Hall, the barn needed some serious attention before it could be used for anything. We had an idea... At the end of summer 2016, we received planning permission to develop Barnutopia as a wedding and event venue. As we debated where to start, we were contacted by a production company looking for candidates for a new ITV series Give it a year. The producer said they would like to film us over a 12-month period as we set up our new wedding barn. Ideally, they wanted to film the first wedding at the end of the year. Initially, we were not inclined to go ahead. We have seen many television shows where the objective seems to be to find fault and criticise the participants. Our venue is in a stunning Shropshire location and the glamping accommodation and barns are clean and wellequipped. However, it is an ex-farm set-up and has its share of broken walls, fences that need fixing and 54 | It’s beautiful

wildlife. We give no guarantees that you will not encounter the odd spider. The producer assured us that this was a different kind of TV show. The series was to be a celebration of British businesses. It would feature a well-known celebrity business guru offering advice along the way. Finally, we agreed, but it was not without some trepidation that we

We were sworn to secrecy for the duration of filming and could not see the finished episode before it went live on national television signed the contract, liability waiver and confidentiality agreement. We were sworn to secrecy for the duration of filming and could not see the finished episode before it went live on national television. With some excitement, they told us the name of the celebrity guru, Baroness Karren Brady. We looked back blankly. Twenty years living abroad meant we had never heard of “The First Lady of Football” nor had we seen her in “The Apprentice” as an aide to Lord Sugar. The TV crew dropped in regularly over the year to film progress on the barn and the all-important licence for wedding ceremonies. The couple who booked the first wedding ceremony for August 2017 also agreed to appear on camera. The production team filmed us meeting

and showing them progress on the barn. They even had me ask the bride what would happen if we didn’t secure the licence. That question did not go down well. Baroness Brady first visited when the barn was a broken-down shell with rotten window-frames and weeds growing inside. She came back at the end of the year to review the finished barn and film the wedding. We found her to be friendly, down to earth and an astute businesswoman. The process of filming was time-consuming and repetitive. Sometimes the crew would have to film the same sequence several times to get it right. That said, we found them to be honest and open and true to life when filming. There were no tricks and they were diligent about ensuring they got facts and figures right. This meant several long conversations with their in-house business and finance expert. The hardest part was waiting for the program to broadcast many months after filming finished. In the end, it was worth it. Barnutopia is one of the success stories and it brought a tear to my eye seeing the difference a year makes. We were thrilled with the way we were portrayed and consider it a year well spent. For more information visit www.barnutopia.com.

Lipocontrast Lipocontrast is a body contouring treatment, based on advanced Cryothermal technology. At Park Street Clinic, we are one of the few clinics in the West Midlands to have this advanced machine. Lipocontrast delivers rapid results by heating, cooling and heating the fat cells, reducing body fat without damage or invasive methods. 33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes. Lipocontrast is suitable for most areas of the body.

Super IPL Treatment Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time. Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Super IPL treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair. Treatments start at just £30.

Find

Summer stunner

with Royston Blythe

Whether your summer will be spent unwinding on the calming shores of the Italian Riviera, basking in the glorious sunshine on the heaven-sent hideaways of tropical islands or coping with the unpredictable weather of the great British Summer, Shrewsbury’s multi-award-winning destination salon offers you the ultimate summer hair guide! As winners for the third consecutive year, of the regions prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy, the team at Royston Blythe are most definitely the go-to experts for advice on hair colour. Pastel metallic hues are a beautiful addition to this summer’s colour palette. You can opt for something subtle and add metallic balayage highlights to a conventional base shade or, you could incorporate them into an all-over metallic hair colour effect for a more adventurous look. For natural blondes and bleach blondes alike, icy-white is a statement look to consider: not only does it look gorgeous on its own, but also with pastel undertones, like blues or lavenders. If you’re a brunette, summer is the time to incorporate sun-kissed highlights that add interest to an all over colour. It is important to visit a skilled colourist so that they can guide you on the best tones to keep your complexion bright and glowing.

Styles

Midi-length hair is the look of the season. The growing popularity of shoulder length hair is the best news for those whose long locks are suffering the consequences of excessive colour and over-use of heated tools. In one salon visit you can opt for the chop and rid your hair of dry ends and completely revitalise your look. Midi length is oh-so-versatile, super-flattering, low maintenance and adapted to suit all face shapes - what’s not to love?

Smooth it out

That clean, super-sleek look that can be spotted on celebrities including Ashley Graham and Olivia Palermo is a summer look we love. This look requires your hair to be uber-healthy and super-glossy so speak with your stylist about the best intensive conditioning treatment and be sure to invest in a hair oil that will keep your hair shiny and tame any frizz. We love L’Oreal’s Mythic Oil for that soft and supple looking finish.

Play with waves

Undone waves work for any length and have an effortlessly charming appeal. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gigi Hadid and Alexa Chung are seasoned-veterans of soft summer waves that are known for their faceflattering effects and easy to replicate styling. Invest in a professional texturising spritz (Kerastase Spray A Porter will create instant waves without any stickiness) to allow for easy styling. Work this look with a casual side-parting as seen at Balmain. 60 | It’s beautiful

Fringe benefits

A long, soft tapered fringe is the perfect addition to add interest to longer and midi length hair and works with every texture. If your hair is super-sleek and easy to manage, you can consider a shorter, blunt statement fringe.

Summer chic

There is a short hairstyle to suit every woman and our advice is to visit a highly regarded stylist who specialises in creating bespoke looks that are personalised to enhance individual features. Think Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid at Tom Ford’s NYFW Spring Summer 2018 Show. The short, tousled pixie that is longer at the front has a really feminine feel and that cool and fresh approach for summer. Team it up with sunkissed highlights to really accentuate the look.

Don’t travel without sun protection for your hair

On holiday, we slather sun creams on our bodies but forget to protect our glorious manes. Just as you should wear an SPF, you should protect your hair every day too. Hair is at its most vulnerable in the sunshine, so you need to protect your colour and condition. We recommend our guests use Kerastase’s Soleil Collection.

Book in for an intense conditioning treatment before you travel

Treat your hair to regular deep conditioning treatments a couple of weeks before your departure date, so that it’s in peak condition for your holiday. We love Fusio Dose prescriptive treatments by Kerastase. You hairdresser will profile your hair and cocktail a mask that will nourish, protect and revitalise your specific hair type.

Treat yourself to Kerastraight Smoothing System

Banish the frizz and make a time-consuming, unmanageable mane a thing of the past by investing in a smoothing treatment. There are a number of semi-permanent smoothing systems available that will give you super-shiny, frizz-free hair for upto four months. At Royston Blythe, we use the Kerastraight treatment and our guests love it!

We are a clinic which specialises in laser and intense pulse light (IPL) treatments for both men and women. We treat a wide range of concerns ranging from hair removal, tattoo removal, pigmentation and red vessel removal. We deliver safe and effective treatments in a friendly and professional environment using medical-graded equipment from Lynton Lasers, the UK’s premier manufacturer of aesthetic technology to private clinics and the NHS. Please get in touch in order to find out more about the treatments we offer and how they can help you.

Becoming a Host Family Every year, thousands of school age overseas students are educated at independent schools across the UK. When their school closes for half term holidays and exeat weekends, they need a great host family who will provide a home away from home. Pippa’s Guardians has been providing high quality Guardianship services to international students for over 20 years and understand the value of a good home and how a host family can positively impact on a student’s wellbeing. The families we look for are welcoming and interested in other cultures. Having children of similar ages helps but isn’t the most important thing as we have many successful host families who have no children, younger children or indeed older children who have left home. Internet access is very important and each student will need their own bedroom with a desk or somewhere quiet for homework. Being part of a family and experiencing dayto-day family life enhances students’ study and plays a part in improving their English language. As well as receiving a generous payment, becoming a Pippa’s 62 | It’s beautiful

Guardians host family is a wonderful experience; providing the opportunity to really make a difference to a student whilst they are studying here in the UK, in many cases a very long way from home. For children of host families it can be really exciting and interesting getting to know other children who have had very different life experiences to them For families where children have grown up and left home, it is a chance to enjoy the fun and companionship of having younger people in the home once again. Our students come from all over the world. It is a marvellous and interesting way to learn about the cultures, traditions and daily life of young people and their families from countries very different to our own. Many of our host families form lifelong friendships with our students and their families and stay in touch even after they have left school for university. The half term holidays fall in October for two weeks, for one week in February and one week in May. Exeat weekends take place up

to five times a year and are usually for two or three nights each time. Most students travel back home to their families for the long holidays in the Summer, at Christmas and at Easter. Our local Area Managers look after our students during term time and are close by to support you whilst your student is staying in your home. We are very keen to find new host families locally. Our students are currently based at schools in Shrewsbury, Ruyton XI Towns, Oswestry, Telford and Staffordshire so please do spread the word if you know anyone who might be interested in applying to host a student from one of these schools. Proms and Prosecco Shropshire’s Proms and Prosecco in the Park event is set to return this September with even more sparkle and plenty more fizz. And, with tickets selling faster than last year, organisers are urging people to book now to avoid disappointment. The line-up for the British-style prom event on September 8, at Chetwynd Deer Park in Newport, will see artists performing popular classical pieces mixed with favourites from the musicals, as well as a few contemporary surprises. Headlining this year is British soprano Mary-Jess, best known for winning the Chinese version of the ‘X-Factor’

Headlining this year is British soprano Mary-Jess, best known for winning the Chinese version of the ‘X-Factor’ and recording the theme song for Downton Abbey and recording the theme song for Downton Abbey. She will be joined by tenor Jack Foley who captivated last year’s prom-goers and adding a real edge to this year’s line-up is String Infusion, a fabulous all-female string quartet known for their acoustic and electric string performances in a pop/rock/classical crossover style. A range of talented local performers will also take to the stage including the renowned Newport Male Voice Choir and A Choired Taste from Market Drayton. Young, 64 | It’s beautiful

up and coming Staffordshire-based singer 15-year-old Olivia Shipley will also be making a special appearance. Added to this musical feast, there will be a vast array of food stalls and bars including a dedicated Prosecco bar, craft ale bar, artisan gin bar, handcrafted ice creams, pizza, a wide variety of street food and lots more. There will be plenty of activities to keep the children entertained including bushcraft skills, jugglers and street entertainers, as well as plenty of space for them to stretch their legs and of course the fantastic music. Prom-goers are encouraged to bring their own tables, chairs, blankets, picnic hampers candelabras and of course union jack flags to add to the British proms atmosphere. Organiser Esther Wright, director of Fizz Festivals Ltd, said: “We are very excited about this year’s event. We’ve added lots more sparkle and fizz and it’s going to be a great celebration of British classical music, great food and drink. What more could people want to round off the summer!” Entry is by advance ticket sale only. Tickets £28, or £27 for groups of 10 or more. Children under 13 go free. She adds: “We had the business plan written for a long time so it was just a matter of tweaking it and we pinpointed Bridgnorth as our first location, to try it out, with expansion planned if all went well, with Shrewsbury being our next preferred location. We knew we wanted to be at the heart of independent shopping in the town, Wyle Cop - it’s turned out to be a perfect location for our product.” Roobarb sells a range of ladies’ Italian designer clothes, hats, sunglasses and scarves, organic skincare, handbags, small pieces of occasional furniture and homeware, plus ethically sourced jewellery.

This award is for all the work we do with Confident Children out of Conflict UK. It’s a UK based charity and we raise money for them and play a promotional video in our stores to highlight the work they do.” Both shops have life-size Zebras in the window as a nod to where the name Roobarb comes from. Both Kevin and Marcia’s friends who live in Kenya had a Zebra called Roobarb, which they rescued after being orphaned.

Sweet success for Shropshire retailer A Shropshire-based lifestyle store has recently celebrated being crowned the best in the UK for the second time in two years. The awards were presented to Roobarb, who have stores in Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury, by the British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA), a body that represents many of the UK’s independent stores. The two awards were Charitable Champion, for the company’s work with African street children in South Sudan and Independent Retail Team of the Year, which they have won for two years in a row. This was awarded for engaging with their team of staff and for the exceptional customer service in their stores. Roobarb, run by Marcia Dale and Kevin Bellwood, opened in Bridgnorth in May 2014 with its Shrewsbury store opening at the top of Wyle Cop in December 2017. Marcia says: “We are both from a media background and we had a little experience in retail in our early working life, but we both always yearned to get back in to retail at some point. We always had a dream to open a shop with a strong brand selling products that couldn’t be easily sourced on the high street or online. Once Kevin returned from working in Africa for the United Nations, the time seemed right for us to open Roobarb.”

Kevin says: “Our Zebras in our windows in Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury, have been a great investment, they are an amazing marketing tool. So many people stop and look at them, everyone loves Zebras, don’t they?” He adds “Our philosophy with our stores is to be very different from what’s already out there on the high street, we work very hard to source our product, we also try to create a fun atmosphere in our stores and we also engage with our customers, something that doesn’t happen a lot these days. We also pride ourselves on our customer service too, nothing is too much trouble for our customers and we train our staff to have the same philosophy.” Roobarb’s customer service and staff training was a key factor for winning one of the national retail awards. The Bira Team of the Year is an award that goes to a company that motivates, trains and takes their staff members with them on the retail journey. Marcia ends: “These two awards have been a brilliant achievement in such a short time for us, to win Team of the Year twice has been great for our team, they have all helped win this award. And then to go on and win the Charitable Champion is just amazing. This award is for all the work we do with Confident Children out of Conflict UK. It’s a UK based charity and we raise money for them and play a promotional video in our stores to highlight the work they do. The charity pays for the education of 850 street children in South Sudan, the world’s newest but poorest country. They also support a children’s orphanage of over 50 vulnerable girls and boys; this work is something that is very close to our heart.” Photo: Roobarb director Kevin Bellwood with Her Worshipful Mayor Cllr. Jane Mackenzie performing the ribbon cutting.

Lorna McCann (38) author and PR professional Where do you live? Childs Ercall near Newport What schools/college/university did you go to? Burton Borough School in Newport, New College in Wellington and then the University of Nottingham. Tell us about your career trajectory to date? It’s funny to talk about my career because for a long time, I never really knew what I wanted to do. I had more idea about what I didn’t want to do really. I remember at university attending lots of talks and open days hosted by big corporate companies, but I think I only went because all my friends were. I knew deep down that wasn’t the career path for me. I’d always enjoyed writing and so wanted to do something with these skills and that’s when I decided to train as a journalist. I worked on media titles across Shropshire and much further afield for about 12 years before moving into the PR industry in 2013. I’ve worked agency side and in house and then in 2017 I set up my own PR and media consultancy. I now run this alongside my work as a children’s author. What made you want to become a children’s author? My children. I have two young boys and they love books and stories. Like many parents, I’m always making up silly stories for them. But then, one day, my eldest son asked if I would turn one of the made up stories into a ‘proper’ book so that he could read it himself and look at the pictures. That’s where it all started really. I said ‘yes’ so had to make it happen and 82

12 months later in November 2016 my first book ‘Wendy and the Biscuit Tree’ was published. How easy was it to make the transition from PR to author? I’m fortunate really as a lot of the PR work I do is for other authors. It’s quite specialist so there is a natural synergy between both the PR and author work that I do. I’ll be honest, becoming an author has happened rather accidentally. I’ve not yet made a complete transition and this side of my work has grown quite organically. I absolutely love everything that it involves though from writing to being creative to visiting schools and hosting author workshops for pupils. It’s pretty much a dream job and I’m having so much fun. Where do you find the inspiration for your books? From all sorts of things really. I get a lot of ideas from my own children and I always feel really inspired when I come away from a school visit. The children are often buzzing with excitement and this energy often helps to inspire me. I spend a lot of time outdoors and I think this really helps too. I like to play a lot, get muddy - you know - all the things grown ups aren’t supposed to really do! I’ve always said my ‘happy’ place is outside and this is when I get most of my ideas and inspiration for stories. Why do you think they have been such a success? I think children really relate to ‘Felix the small boy with a BIG imagination’ because most children love dressing up themselves and pretending to be things like a doctor,

vet, police officer, shopkeeper - whatever it might be. As for ‘Wendy and the Biscuit Tree’, I think, quite honestly, children just love the idea of a biscuit tree. The possibility that one day, they might just find one growing at the bottom of their garden fills them with real excitement. I think the illustrations are also a big hit. Holly has a really unique style which the children seem to really love. When you get time off, what do you do to unwind? Spend time with my family. We are quite an active family and love cycling, walking and taking trips to the beach. Do you have any advice for other budding authors considering making it their career? Don’t give up. Write what you want to write and use criticism constructively - it will make you a better writer in the long run! Finally, What does the future hold for you? Hmmm, good question. In the short term I’m hoping to publish another book. All being well, it should be ready to release later this year. Longer term, I’d like to be more involved with schools helping to support and enhance literacy skills and creativity in young children. I recently founded The Rural Schools Write, Read, Inspire Project in partnership with The Rural Charity and it has been a huge success. Going forward we’re hoping this will become an annual event in Shropshire. Lorna’s latest book ‘Felix - the small boy with the BIG imagination’ is available to purchase from Amazon priced at £8.
