Christmas shopping is never easy trying to find that perfect gift for that someone special, so there has never been a better time to change your approach to present shopping. Forget traipsing around endless national shops and spending hours browsing the internet, instead shop locally and find something extra special. And thanks to Heaven you don’t have to look far to find an amazing gift for everyone on your Xmas list. As Deborah Mitchell explains:

“Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that men are always hard to buy for but we’ve made it easy for you to give that special guy something they’ll love this Xmas, thanks to our fabulous range of mens products. Men want to look after themselves, care for their skin and indulge in treatments so products and gift vouchers make for a perfect present. “Heaven’s men’s range is complete with shave, shower and shampoo products as well as luxurious targeted moisturisers and skincare that make skin look amazing. “Women can fake a flawless complexion with make up but for guys it’s much harder as their skin needs to be flawless looking naturally, that’s why our products and treatments are so popular because men are amazed by the results.” Aside from the skin care range there’s plenty of in-salon pampering on offer too: “Guys love our super relaxing back massages and facials, manicures as well as age-reversing natural muscle freezing treatments which smooth out the fine lines around the forehead and eyes as well as tackling the most stubborn frown lines.” Of course there’s Heaven’s infamous Bee Venom products which not only boast a celebrity and royal following but are renowned for their age-reversing effect. “Everyone loves our Gold Bee Venom which feels just like silk and thanks to its wonderful gold packaging makes for the most special Christmas gift.”

16

| It’s beautiful

And for the more affordable anti-aging results Deborah’s Black Bee Venom is the ideal choice. “Made from African bees, the Black Bee Venom works to smooth away static lines by filling them out and works incredibly well alongside injectables to keep the face frozen for longer. It even improves the look of muscles too.” There’s as new edition to Heaven’s range which everyone wants to get their hands on this Xmas: Collagen Drops. “Collagen is found in abundance in our skin when we’re younger but as we get older the amount diminishes – in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, and this can lead to a dry complexion and signs of ageing. “Heaven’s Collagen Drops help boost lost collagen, thanks to their high levels of marine collagen. They also contain super skin-boosting hyaluronic acid, and together this helps promote healthy, shiny hair too and leave you looking – and feeling – fabulous. It’s the UK’s most concentrated daily dose - a mighty 10,000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen.” Can I add Collagen Drops to my face creams? “Yes, you can simply add a few drops to supercharge your favourite moisturiser or weekly mask.” What makes Collagen Drops different? “They contain no additives – you may find the drinks or sachets you have been using in the past contain bulking agents, fillers or sucrose. Instead, they are made from a skin-boosting combination of high-intensity marine collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and a small amount of glucosamine that allow them to be accepted by the body quickly. There’s also the addition of Biotin to help hair repair.”

Can they be used externally and internally? “Collagen Drops are all about promoting inner and outer beauty; and their strength means you can squirt them directly into your mouth. You can add these natural superstrength supplements to a drink or food; or you can also apply directly – either massaged into your skin, mixed with your shampoo and conditioner or a few drops into your everyday moisturiser.” Are they vegan? “No, because they contain a marine collagen they are not suitable for vegans.” especially those who suffer from acne, rosacea and eczema. It contains bark from the willow tree, a natural and organic alternative to aspirin. “For all complexions, my Defiance plumps out fine lines, lightens pigmentation and prevents spot breakouts thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid. “Perfect for dull or damaged skin. Overnight Success Cream is packed with anti-ageing properties and oxygen to detoxify and replenish.

CHRISTMAS MINI MUST HAVES

“Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t dream of receiving this beauty for Christmas. My Black Set is the ultimate in luxury skincare – I have hand-picked each of our most sought-after products. I think it’s just perfect for the love of your life who seriously loves Heaven!

“For sensitive or dry skin, Clarifying Oil Serum conditions to bring your complexion back to equilibrium. “And Cleanse & Foam to improve the skin’s elasticity levels and balancing oil levels to reduce shine on your T-Zone. “My fabulous Black Gift Set is available online now.”

THE GREEN WOMAN CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY A Decade of Ethical Excellence and Resilience for Ludlow-based Natural Cosmetics Business Ludlow-based natural skincare company The Green Woman is proudly celebrating its 10th Birthday this month. This environmentally focused, zero-waste business has been on an impressive journey from a humble start-up around the kitchen table to a multiaward-winning, fully organic certified business. The company’s resilience and sustainability have not only seen them through challenging times but have also established them as a beacon of ethical excellence. Founded by sisters Eve and Suzanne Carnall in 2013, The Green Woman was originally set up in the pursuit to find a natural alternative to mainstream deodorant. As well as their flagship Fit Pit deodorant, the range now includes Green Cream moisturisers, White & Green mineral toothpaste, Freedom sun cream and Organic Coconut Oil. Ten years on and it is still family-run and proudly independent. Their HQ on Ludlow’s Eco-Park is home to the busy makery, where all the products are handmade by the small, dedicated team. A significant milestone in The Green Woman’s journey was achieving COSMOS Organic certification in 2021, marking a crucial step towards environmentally responsible and sustainable beauty products. Co-founder Suzanne says, “We feel enormously proud to have completed the journey to get organically certified. Of the thousands of beauty products that claim to be organic, few are organically certified, and we hope it helps us stand out, and show what we believe in.” Upholding their cruelty-free promise has also been an important part of sourcing their ingredients. “We only use 100% cruelty-free ingredients and we’re against all testing on animals. We carefully select coconut oil suppliers who harvest without using monkeys or any form of animal exploitation.”

One of the company’s key missions is to highlight the risks of many chemicals widely used in mass-produced products. They have been supporting breast cancer prevention charity Breast Cancer UK for several years - as part of their commitment, 3% of the proceeds of White & Green mineral toothpaste goes to the charity. The past decade has not been without its challenges, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Nearly half of the company’s stockists were unable to reopen or had to close within a year of reopening. The Green Woman has had to adapt to the everchanging landscape by transitioning to an increased online presence and streamlining their business model. Their approach, incorporating permaculture into company culture and operations, has played a huge role in getting them to where they are today. Co-founder Eve says, “One of the big inherent advantages of a permaculture approach is the focus on resilience rather than efficiency. In a highly predictable world efficiency wins out, but in our increasingly changeable social and economic reality it is resilience and sustainability that will last through the storms.” As The Green Woman marks this important milestone, they invite the community to join in celebrating their achievements and to continue supporting local, ethical, and purpose-driven businesses. Suzanne says, “We’re hugely grateful to all our stockists, customers, and local supporters, many who have been with us from the very beginning. We have lots planned for the next 10 years, and we are excited to have them with us as the next chapter begins.” For more information about The Green Woman, their products, and their mission, please visit www.thegreenwoman.co.uk. Leather goods that last Two Fat Dogs is a shop with a difference run by mother and daughter team, Karen Beattie and Fritha Podschies. Having run their successful business in Hampshire for three years, they decided to move and offer their unique bespoke shopping experience to Shrewsbury customers. Their tiny shop is crammed with rolls of leather, hand crafted bags and all sorts of leather goods. It’s found down an historic alley, Grope Lane, which runs between the High Street and Fish Street. The name, Two Fat Dogs, is inspired by their two dogs who, on most days, can be found at the shop. In their workshop above the shop, Karen and Fritha design and make everything they sell using traditional techniques and the finest quality leather and materials (from UK suppliers). The shop offers a wide range of bags and much more including made to measure belts and leather aprons, log baskets, chairs, wallets, journals and notebooks in traditional or a rainbow of colours. Many of the items can be personalised. If you can’t make up your mind, gift vouchers (along with a complimentary personalised key fob) are available. But what makes the shop so different is that the ladies also offer a bespoke service. Customers can combine their ideas with the passion and expertise of the maker

producing something unique and distinctive. When choosing a design, the leather or colours, customers are encouraged to use their imagination. As well as creating pieces for individual customers they have provided items for hotels, vintage

and luxury car companies as well as gentlemen’s outfitters. “We take pride in our work and believe that keeping traditional crafts alive is important. Leather is a natural product that only gets better with age and the products we make, are made to last a lifetime. As every hide is different, we hand select each one and often a piece will inspire a new design,” Karen explained. “Buying from us will mean you own something so unique, no one else will have it and it’s a real statement piece!” Good leather is worth preserving and the ladies offer a service rejuvenating and repairing leather goods. Occasionally old or sentimental items can be remade into something special. Early next year workshops teaching traditional methods of leather work – from belt to wallet or simple bag making will be on offer. Look out for announcements on Facebook, Instagram or the local press. Whether you are looking to treat yourself to a new bag or for Christmas gifts, Two Fat Dogs is worth a visit – if only for the wonderful smell of leather. Christmas

Party Makeup

by Caroline Louise Beauty and Makeup Christmas is almost here and with it comes the season of parties and get-togethers. Whether it’s a work party, a family gathering, or a night out with friends, it makes you feel amazing if you look your best. One of the most exciting parts of getting ready for a Christmas party is doing your makeup. Here are some tips and tricks to help you create a stunning look that’s perfect for any festive occasion. Firstly, let’s talk about the eyes. If you don’t normally do anything with your brows, consider using some brow powder to even out brows and add definition. A classic smoky eye is always a great choice for a Christmas party. Start by applying a cream concealer and then a neutral eyeshadow all over your lid to give a smooth base. Then, using a darker shade, blend it into the crease of your eye and up and out at the outer corners. Use a black eyeliner or a dark eyeshadow applied with a slanted brush to line your upper and lower lash line and smudge it out for a more sultry look. Finish off with a few coats of mascara to make your eyes pop. If you want to try something different, you can opt for a glittery eye look. Apply a glittery eyeshadow all over your lid over the neutral shade and blend it out towards the crease after you’ve applied the darker shade. I always work on eyes first, particularly if creating a smoky look as it helps to prevent your base from getting spoiled with shadow ‘fallout’. You can also do some ‘clean up’ and sharpen lines with concealer afterwards. Next, let’s move on to the base. A flawless complexion is the key to any good makeup look. Start with a good moisturiser followed by a primer to smooth

out your skin and make your makeup last longer. Follow this up with a foundation that matches your skin tone and provides the right amount of coverage. If you have any blemishes, use a concealer to cover them up. Set your foundation with a translucent powder to keep it in place all night. When it comes to your cheeks, a rosy glow is always a great choice. Apply a blush that complements your skin tone, starting from just above the apples of your cheeks and blending it up and out towards your temples. You can also add some highlighter to your cheekbones to give your skin a radiant glow. Finally, let’s talk about the lips. A classic red lip is always a great choice for a Christmas party. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone and apply it with a lip brush for a precise finish. If you prefer a more subtle look, you can opt for a nude or pink shade. Popping a dab of highlighter in the centre of your lips will help create the illusion of fullness if you feel you have naturally thin lips. Remember, the key to a great makeup look is to experiment and have fun. Don’t be afraid to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. With these tips and tricks, you’ll be sure to create a stunning look that’s perfect for any Christmas party. If you’d like a bespoke party look creating for you then give me a shout and I’ll be happy to help.

Do you love Winter? By Sian Brennan-Todd

For some it’s their favourite time of year as the Christmas gifts are all over the shops and the window displays turn to a sea of shimmer and lights. It is that time of year where the nights are getting longer, and the days are a bit muddy and wetter! In the cold, dark Winter it is so easy to forget our happiness. It can be a challenge to stay positive when the weather is miserable, and the clouds are oppressing…BUT…the control of our own mindset is the most powerful tool we have. Having just moved back to the UK from Australia, where I have been living and working for the last 6 years, I understand all too well the mindset shift. From the sandy beaches and salty waves of Bondi Beach to the beautiful rural countryside of Shropshire, I have learnt to see the beauty in both. We must want to be positive and happy as individuals. Being happy doesn’t mean we run around all day with a huge smile on our face and skip down the road, but it can be as simple as a smile to a stranger or a kind text to a friend. Happiness tends to ripple through one another and flows between people. You can start a wave of positivity that can travel far and wide. There are small and simple moments in our day that can make someone else’s day. Never underestimate the power you have to look after yourself and others around you. The power of the people and who we spend time with will have a huge impact on our mindset. Spend time with positive and uplifting people and you will feed from this. Surround yourself with negativity and they will almost always bring you down. Think about it, if someone says, ‘Gosh I feel tired today”, you might then

start thinking about how tired you are, and it breeds from there. Whereas if you start the day with gratitude and focus, you can share this to your family and friends. If you want clearer, more productive and less stressful days you could try some of the following – journaling, walks, perhaps through the stunning leafy Quarry in Shrewsbury, coffee with a friend? Any of these may impact your mindset for the rest of the day. We all need connection and through this winter make sure you are connecting with people. Be that friends, family, work or community groups. Having quality interactions with people each day will make a big difference to your mindset. We need relationships in our life and the way you approach these will have a direct correlation to if they are successful. Do you feel your preparation for each day is conducive to a positive one? How do you wind down at the end of the day? For me I love to dance with people and in groups is the best. Moving makes me feel happy and confident and dancing has enhanced my life in so many ways. I love to pass on my passion. I recently started adult dance classes in Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury Cheer Dance and Gym), and it has been a golden way to meet new people and share the love of dance whilst spreading positivity. One of the greatest pieces of advice I ever got was, ‘make what is valuable important’. This winter make sure you take time for you. In amongst the business of the season, take charge of your mindset and know the power of positivity lies within you. CHRISTMAS TABLE

Create the setting for a memorable Christmas dinner with a beautifully styled table. Keeping it simple and classic will mean decorating the table will be an easy stress-free endeavour, because let’s face it, there’s enough Christmas planning to do as it is. However, it really does set the scene, and shows another level of thoughtfulness to such a special occasion. If you have centrepieces, place settings, floral arrangements, and table runners that all cohesively go together then this makes setting

it all out quick and easy. Sticking to a traditional colour palette of red and green with pine foliage in your floral arrangements and classic motifs such as berries, deer, stars or Christmas trees will mean every year you can pull together a familiar table setting. Of course, over the years adding to the collection means you can always switch things out and inject something fresh in. Here are some classic table decor items for a beautifully styled Christmas table.

Four Sleep Gifts for the Exhausted People in your Life For most sleep-deprived people, a full night’s rest is the greatest Christmas gift of all but sadly, that isn’t available to order most nights let alone to ask Santa for, this holiday season. Instead, sleep gifts that help any tired or exhausted person in your life in getting a better night’s rest, can be the next greatest gift. There are many things available and these can include things such as pillow sprays, meditation apps, eye masks, and ear plugs! Hopefully, some of these will bring those restful 7-8 hours a bit closer. As a bed shop, we specialise in ‘Your Sleep Matters’, so are always on standby to help our customers find sleep aids that work night after night. We have put together 4 of the best gift ideas we know would help those friends and families who are in search of a great night’s sleep.

Pillows

These de-stress pillows have 16 biocrystal relaxing crystals woven into the cloth. The sleep crystals are chosen for their unique benefits to calm your heartbeat, slow down rapid breathing and relax muscle tension, each aiding in the reduction of stress and improved quality of sleep. 76% of users report they had an overall improved night’s sleep.

Pillowcases

The de-stress pillow has a matching pillowcase too or how about one that is designed to regulate temperature. Your body temperature and a good night’s sleep are linked. An increase or decrease in your overall body temperature can cause waking and if the issue is not rectified, it’s likely the sleep-wake cycle will continue on through the night. Just a change in pillow or pillowcase is a move in the right direction to help this.

40

| It’s beautiful

Bedding

Fidgeting, tossing and turning is most definitely high up there in contributing to insomnia. As this is linked closely to body temperature, it could be your bedding that is causing this, especially if they are filled with allergy triggers or fabrics that cause heat or static. Switching to bamboo, or bamboo/cotton mix bedding will help. Both have thermo-regulating properties and are also moisture wicking. And the bonus is they are the softest and silkiest bedding you will ever come across with a real luxury feel too!

Duvets

Along with pillows and bedding, these can also be a main factor contributing towards poor sleep. They should have two functions: to regulate our body temperature and affect comfort levels. Whilst TOG rating is important, fibre content is equally important so duvets with smart fill fibres, ideally natural, along with weightless cloths, can really go a long way to help with regulated good quality sleep. We recommend these smart temperature duvets as they are powered by HeiQ Cool technology; an intelligent thermoregulation system which dynamically responds to body heat and adapts to temperature changes. It cools before the first sign of sweat. For help with any of these gift ideas, please head to our Newport Beds Showroom for more information. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas & Happy New year from all at Newport Beds & Carpet Loom.

Buy local this Xmas

All in the

Christmas Spirit Emma Glynn, one of the UK’s few female distillers and director of The Shropshire Distillery, is urging people to buy locally this Christmas. She said, “It’s been a really bumpy few years for small businesses with Covid-19, energy hikes, soaring interest rates, and inflation. Most recently, spirit producers like us have been hit with alcohol duty hikes. So this Christmas, please support local Shropshire businesses like ours to keep them thriving.” The Shropshire Distillery has an online shop and will be introducing a click-and-collect option in time for Christmas gift buying. “We are bringing back our two limited edition Christmas gins - Cranberry and Clementine, and Frankincense and Myrrh – which are available to buy online along with our award-winning gins, liqueurs, and new vodka. You can also purchase gift vouchers for our distillery experiences – the gin tasting, tour and talk package, the gin school experience, and our new cocktail masterclass.” Ellesmere’s small batch distillery has received a lot of recognition this year, having been named as aa finalist for Brewery/Distillery of the Year at the Midlands Food Drink & Hospitality Awards 2023, scooping the award for ‘Best Small Business’ at the Shropshire Chamber Business Awards in June, and receiving a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award this year. The Shropshire Distillery has recently been announced as one of three finalists for ‘Experience of the Year’ at the West Midlands Tourism Awards 2024. The winner will be announced early next year. Coffee & gingerbread Christmas bundt cake The ultimate cake to celebrate Christmas – add a little sprinkle of glitter or edible lustre before serving if you wish to make it twinkly! Makes 1 large bundt cake

IngredIents

• 250g soft butter at room temperature, plus a little extra melted to brush the cake tin • 250g light muscovado sugar • 5 medium free-range eggs • 250g self-raising flour, plus a little extra for dusting • 1 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp ground ginger • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 75g buttermilk • 50ml Camp Coffee • For the sugar glaze • 150g icing sugar, sifted • 3-4 tbsp water or milk • 2 tsp vanilla extract (optional) • To decorate • Icing sugar

Preparation: 20mins Cooking time: 45mins

Method

• Brush a little melted butter inside the bundt tin, making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies, then dust with flour, shaking the tin to ensure the whole tin is buttered and floured to help the cake turn out without sticking. • Preheat the oven to 180°C / fan 160°C / gas mark 4 and place a large baking sheet in the centre of the oven to place the bundt tin onto whilst baking. • In a stand mixer, with an electric whisk or by hand with a bowl and wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together well until pale and creamy. Gradually add the eggs, one at a time, beating until incorporated. • Add the baking powder and spices to the flour and mix to distribute, then mix into the wet batter. • Mix in the buttermilk and Camp Coffee then spoon the mixture into the tin, smoothing over with a spoon to ensure it is all pushed into the points of the tin, pushing the batter up the sides of the tin a little. • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes until cooked through – the sponge should be light and springy, and when a knife or skewer is inserted into the centre of the cake it should come out clean. • Once cooked, leave the cake in the tin for 5 minutes, then invert onto a plate or cake stand and carefully release the cake. • While the cake is cooling, make the sugar glaze. Place the icing sugar in a bowl and slowly stir in the liquid and vanilla (if using) a little at a time to make a pourable glaze. Drizzle over the cooled cake and dust with icing sugar for a snowy effect. Slice and serve slightly warm. The cake will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days or can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Welcome to the magical world of Wendy Wanderlust, an exciting new series of children’s books that make learning about sustainability and other cultures a whole lot of fun. Written by Jessica Mills, the books are aimed at inspiring children across the world. So, we caught up with author Jessica to learn all about the story behind the books. “After growing up in Shropshire, I spent almost a decade backpacking around the world and working as a nanny, which inspired me to combine my passion for travelling and sustainability with my experience in child development. Through these books, I hope to motivate the next generation to take action to protect the planet and the people on it. “In the midst of the rollercoaster that was 2020, I found myself in Nicosia, Cyprus, taking on another nannying job. As a long-time lover of nature, I often took the children I cared for to the beach, teaching them about the importance of litter picking and the harm caused by discarded plastic and waste. I also read them their favourite stories, well aware of the incredible power of storytelling to captivate young minds, but I often felt like these books were missing a message. “With the world on pause due to lockdown restrictions, it felt like the right time to take a chance and pursue a lifelong dream of writing impactful children’s books. And so, Wendy Wanderlust was born. Wendy is an adventurous and compassionate young girl with a magical backpack, destined to explore the world and make it a better place. Her first adventure, ‘Wendy Wanderlust Wakes Up in Cavo Greco’, was inspired by my time in Cyprus.” After being transported to Cavo Greco in Cyprus, Wendy discovers a problem threatening the beautiful environment and the animals living within it. Armed with her magic backpack and a passion for helping others, Wendy sets out to make a positive

difference. Young readers are not only entertained by her exciting adventures and the charming friends she makes along the way – they also learn about wildlife conservation, protecting the planet and the significance of sustainable practices. “This adventure is only the beginning. Through Wendy’s travels across the globe, I plan to cover topics like upcycling, sustainable fashion, access to education and more. I also have a vision to expand Wendy’s mission and offer eco-friendly activities, products and resources for families, empowering them to adopt a greener, more eco-conscious lifestyle. “Since launching in October, I’ve been overwhelmed by the interest in the first book. So far, Wendy has been shipped off to families around the world, including Australia, USA, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and of course, Shropshire! It’s unbelievable to see so many families getting behind the book and sharing a message of sustainability with their children. I am beyond grateful for everyone who has supported my small business.” This holiday season, why not choose a meaningful gift for your children that continues to make a positive impact? Wendy Wanderlust is a story that not only captures the imagination of young readers but also encourages them to develop a sense of responsibility, empathy, and eco-consciousness. One page at a time, Wendy teaches your children that curiosity, compassion and community can create a brighter future for our planet. For more updates and to join the Wendy Wanderlust community, follow us on Instagram and Facebook (@_wendy_wanderlust). Don’t miss our ‘Wanderer of the Week’ feature, where you can send in stories about how your child has made a positive impact on people or the planet. Do you have a great idea or want to collaborate? development of the College’s collegiate professional community that is wholly focused on making high performance learning a key feature of the College’s ethos and vision. Deborah said the reaccreditation was a ‘considerable milestone in the school’s quest for continuous improvement’. The HPL reaccreditation report said: “An incredibly positive feature of the school is the warmth and collegiality that pervades all aspects of the College’s work. “The success of students and their increasing levels of self-confidence and motivation is palpable. “The College recognises that schooling is not just about academic outcomes, important as they are, but the development of young people who can face an increasingly diverse and challenging world. “Ellesmere College has made inspirational progress adapting its ways of working to include articulating how teachers teach and why they do the things they do. “The outcomes for students, especially those with learning difficulties, are exceptional. One is left in no doubt that the Life Ready mantra is translated into a reality for those students able to have the opportunity to be schooled at Ellesmere College.” HPL has proved to be a successful programme which dovetails with any subject or curriculum helping to achieve academic excellence alongside a broader set of values and attitudes while supporting pupil wellbeing. Ellesmere College will be officially handed the award at the HPL Annual Conference in March at the University of Warwick. A Shropshire school has been named one of the best in the world for their high performance learning for the second time. Ellesmere College has been reaccredited as a High Performance Learning (HPL) World Class School and will hold the status for another three years. The international accreditation aims to deliver educational change, working with schools and teachers to provide a flexible learning framework, building cognitive competences and designed to achieve academic and lifetime success. Ellesmere College was first accredited by the specialist teaching organisation in 2020 and school leaders are delighted they have retained the prestigious title. Headmaster Brendan Wignall said: “We are delighted to have secured High Performance Learning World Class School Accreditation again and are in elite company with only 38 other schools holding this status globally. “The HPL World Class School Award Scheme delivers a flexible teaching and learning framework that systematically builds cognitive competencies leading to academic and lifetime success. “It is a programme we have fully embraced, has been hugely successful and something visitors to the College are asking more about because they have seen that we use it and are keen to learn more.” Ellesmere College employs the HPL approach through the whole school system - from Lower School to Sixth Form. Professor Deborah Eyre, Founder and Chair at High Performance Learning, said both staff and students at Ellesmere were ‘delightfully committed and enthusiastic’. She was particularly impressed with the

Celebrity

A very Mary Christmas Mary Berry, the much-loved The Great British Bake Off judge, has been teaching the nation to cook since first appearing on our TV screens in the early 1970s – and she remains as popular today as ever. Self-admittedly ‘hopeless’ by academic standards, Mary Berry studied at Bath College of Domestic Science after leaving school, and then at the Paris Le Cordon Bleu when she was 21, recalling: “I didn’t like Paris at all. I stuck it out, but it wasn’t the highlight of my time.” Born in Bath in 1935, it was in the swinging 60s that Mary landed the role of cookery editor of Housewife magazine. That same decade – in 1966 – she married Paul Hunnings but their relationship wasn’t so straightforward, with Mary admitting to Sue Perkins’ podcast, An Hour or So With, that she played the field. “Paul was the London one and I had a Bath one, actually there were several in Bath. You keep your options open.” Taking more attempts than Mary probably ever has to perfect a recipe, it eventually took Paul three proposals to succeed in getting her to say “yes” – she refused the first time because he was drunk. The couple tied the knot at Charlcombe Church, near Bath, with Mary wearing a £5 dress and revealing she made her own wedding cake. Paul and Mary had three children, two sons and a daughter. Tragically, their second-born son, William, died aged nineteen in a car crash. On The Mary Berry Show she recalled the moment police knocked on the door to tell her the news. Mary and Paul rushed immediately to the hospital. “He just looked so beautiful and so lovely, his little cold face and it was nice to say farewell.” Today, home for Mary and retired antique bookseller Paul is a four-bedroom home, with separate cottage, indoor pool and gym, in Henley, Oxfordshire. “Paul is wonderful. He is always there for me…but him do the cooking? You must be joking! I do the cooking at home and on the rare occasion I’m not well, he will always make an omelette. After two or three omelettes, I’m normally better!” With more than 80 books to her credit – her first published in 1966 – how does Mary, who was made

Mary Berry and her husband Paul Hunnings

a CBE in 2012 and the honour of Damehood in 2020, keep her classic recipes modern and relevant? “I adapt them by updating and using new ingredients, such as baking spreads, new fruits and vegetables, new grains like quinoa and puy lentils. These are all modern ingredients if you compare them to when the classics were invented.” With Christmas upon us, Mary and Paul, who have five grandchildren – son Thomas’ two girls Abby and Grace, and daughter Annabel’s three children Louise, Tobie and Atlanta – have previously told how they refuse to spoil them over the festive season. Said Mary: “We’re good at keeping to a budget and nearly always give them an experience, like sailing lessons or tennis lessons.” The couple entertain family at home for Christmas. “We always have the family over…We have a turkey with all the trimmings, fresh veg, Christmas pudding, trifle, mince pies. I love doing the cooking but we share it on Christmas Day,” said Mary.

Water’s Edge

Woven tapestries celebrate the landscape of Wales This winter sees the return to Oriel Môn in Llangefni, Anglesey of a highly talented tapestry weaver in a one-woman exhibition displaying over 40 inspirational works. After a highly successful exhibition “Weaving the Coast” in 2019, Ros Hornbuckle, a self-taught tapestry weaver living in Oswestry, returns with a new collection of hand-woven art. Ros has been weaving rugs and tapestries for over 40 years. Her work is now concentrated on her emotional connection with landscape and with tales that arouse strong feelings in her. Ros explores these using colour, line, and texture. She explains, “My tapestries use hand-spun wool, with colours that I mix like paint before or during

spinning.” The vibrant colours and textures produce an immediate impact on the viewer. Ros further explains, “I experience weaving as a form of meditation, as each work can take 2-3 months.” ‘Water’s Edge’, an exhibition of woven tapestries, is about rocks, water, and sky. It explores the textures, colours and light found at the edge of water - mountains, sunsets, water splashing over rocks and into pools, and reflections. Ros states, “The water’s edge is the area that most fascinates me as a weaver and challenges me to capture the ever-

changing movement of water and light, and colours altered by time of day and weather, but also the permanence of rock and mountain.” The slow process of tapestry weaving, together with dyeing and spinning the wool, means that each image is invested with love for the landscape of Wales. The exhibition runs until 25 February 2024. Oriel Môn is open and welcomes all visitors Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. Admission is free. Ros’s website www.roshornbuckle.wordpress.com has information on techniques and a gallery of her work.

Best Christmas markets in Europe With Christmas now just around the corner, if you find yourself fantasising about mulled wine and steaming chestnuts – you’re not alone. Christmas market season is upon us, the perfect time to wrap up warm and hunt for gifts you wouldn’t find anywhere else. While we have plenty of markets to visit on our doorstep, nothing quite compares to Europe’s fairy-tale, festive spirit. From Hungary’s regional specialities and the dazzling lights of Vienna, all the way to Tallinn’s cobblestone streets dusted with snow, we’ve pulled out five of the best Christmas markets in Europe, and what makes each one so magical.

Vienna, Austria

Every winter, Vienna’s prettiest squares transform into a maze of Christmas markets, adorned with fairy lights. Wherever your feet take you, expect to see everything from artisanal handicrafts and traditional wooden toys, to ice rinks Ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds. This is Christmas at its most traditional. Oh, and did we mention the food? Warm the cockles of your heart with a mug of mulled wine while inhaling the smell of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked pretzels.

Tallinn, Estonia

Part of what makes Tallinn’s Christmas markets so magical is their setting. Come December, this beautiful medieval city is completely dusted with snow, and the markets filled with local arts and crafts and festive treats. They’re also joined by Tallinn’s very own Santa, who arrives at his winter grotto on an authentic reindeer sleigh. The highlight, though, is Tallinn’s Christmas tree, which has been displayed in front of the town hall since 1441, making it the first of its kind in Europe.

Budapest, Hungary

Officially hailed as Europe’s best Christmas market in 2022, Budapest’s Advent Feast at the Basilica is a delight for the senses. Shop for unique gifts from more than 160 artisan vendors and sample local Hungarian specialities. Goulash and flódni are must-tries! There’s even an ice rink in the heart of all the action, circling a nine-metre-tall Christmas tree. Be sure to

hang around for the real star of the show though – a spectacular laser light show projected on the facade of St. Stephen’s Basilica.

Nuremberg, Germany

Home to more than 150 towns and cities with established Christmas market traditions, Germany is synonymous with the festive season. Berlin and Cologne are world-renowned but most visitors will agree that Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt just about comes out on top. One of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets, dating back to around 1530, Christkindlesmarkt is a foodie’s paradise. Grilled sausages, crackling pork, mulled wine, sweet gingerbread – every festive food fantasy can be fulfilled here.

Prague, Czech Republic

Postcard-worthy Prague was made for the festive season, so it’s no surprise its capital’s market is one of Europe’s favourites. This is part and parcel down to its magnificent setting, but as Czechs are famously heavy drinkers, they go above and beyond when it comes to booze too. Sample mead, punch and grog, a concoction of rum, lemon, sugar and hot water. If you’ve got little ones, they’ll love the Old Town Square’s petting zoo – complete with sheep, goats and donkeys. Understanding the Link Between Foot Pain and Back Pain By Scott Gormley, Shropshire Physiotherapy

Foot pain and back pain are two common conditions that can greatly impact an individual’s quality of life. Surprisingly, these seemingly unrelated ailments may actually be connected. Recent research has shed light on the complex relationship between foot pain and back pain, revealing a significant correlation between the two. Our feet serve as the foundation for our body, supporting our weight and facilitating movement. When we experience foot pain due to conditions like plantar fasciitis or flat feet, it can alter our gait and posture, placing additional stress on other parts of the body, including the lower back. These altered biomechanics can lead to muscle imbalances and spinal misalignments that ultimately result in back pain. Understanding this connection is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment. By addressing foot pain comprehensively, we can potentially alleviate not only discomfort in the feet but also reduce or eliminate associated back pain.

The Role of Foot Structure in Back Pain Development Foot structure plays a crucial role in the development of back pain. The arches of the feet act as shock absorbers, distributing the forces exerted on the body during walking and running. When these arches are compromised due to flat feet or high arches, it can lead to improper alignment and increased stress on the lower back. Flat feet, or fallen arches, cause overpronation, where the feet roll inward excessively with each step.

Common Foot Conditions that Contribute to Back Pain Several foot conditions can lead to back pain due to their impact on posture and gait. Plantar fasciitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, can cause individuals to alter their walking pattern, leading to an imbalance in the spine and subsequent back pain. Another common condition is flat feet or fallen arches, which can disrupt the body’s alignment and place additional stress on the back muscles. Bunions, a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, can also contribute to back pain. The misalignment caused by bunions affects weight distribution while walking, potentially straining the 66

| It’s beautiful 60&ME

lower back. Additionally, conditions like hammertoes or neuromas may cause individuals to favour one side of their body when walking, resulting in compensatory movements that strain the back.

Effective Treatment Options for Relieving Foot-Induced Back Pain When foot pain leads to back pain, finding effective treatment options becomes essential for alleviating discomfort and restoring mobility. One approach is to address the underlying cause of foot pain, such as plantar fasciitis or flat feet. Custom orthotics can provide proper arch support and cushioning, reducing strain on the feet and subsequently relieving back pain. Additionally, physical therapy can play a crucial role in managing foot-induced back pain. Therapists may employ stretching exercises to enhance flexibility and strengthen the muscles supporting both the feet and back. This targeted approach helps alleviate pain by reducing muscle imbalances and improving overall posture. Another effective treatment option is low-impact exercise, such as swimming or cycling, which helps maintain cardiovascular fitness without placing excessive stress on the feet or back. Engaging in these activities promotes blood circulation while minimizing further strain on already affected areas. At Shropshire Physiotherapy we always aim to get to the route of the problem. If you’re suffering with back or foot pain get in touch and let us help you make a plan to resolve your issues. You can book online at www.shropshirephysiotherapy.co.uk or call us on 01952 825042
