HeAveN SKINCAre collagen pRoducts
“Collagen is found in abundance in our skin when we are young, but as we get older the amount diminishes — in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, and this leads to a dry complexion and signs of ageing,” explains Deborah. “Thankfully, my new Collagen Drops help boost that lost collagen... and then some. I’ve been working on these new supplements for a number of years now and because I am using high levels of collagen the results so far have been just amazing.”
She suggests adding a few drops in a glass or water each morning, mix in with Heaven’s Age Defiance Cream, or if you have a blemish on your face, then add a drop directly to your skin and massage in.
Recognised to help with:
• Hair growth
• Increasing thyroid function
• Anti-ageing
• Skin elasticity
• Brighter eyes
• Improvement of aches and pains
Katie has been using the new Collagen Drops for a month and has been delighted with the results: “I started using the drops every morning and evening. By week two I started to see the change — it literally happened overnight. I noticed that my skin was glowing when I woke up and later that day a relative ask me what skincare products I was using as she noticed the difference too.
“Since then, I have noticed the shine on my hair is amazing. I have long dark hair and it can often look dull it is now so shiny that I’ve received so many compliments. Once I completed my month’s supply of drops and I stopped taking them and more or less straight away I have seen a massive difference — my skin doesn’t have that extra glow and my hair has started to look dull again. It’s definitely time to reorder; I’ve realised I can’t live without my Collagen Drops - I want my glow back!”
• Deborah has been busy researching, creating and testing these potent skincare supplements since 2016 as part of her Inner Beauty collection.
• Available in Heaven salons and online, these new drops contain high levels of marine collagen to leave you looking and feeling — fabulous.
• Thanks to their super skinboosting collagen and hyaluronic acid content, they can also promote healthy, shiny hair.
• Simply add a few drops to food or drink; use to supercharge your favourite moisturiser or apply directly to the skin to tackle blemishes and break-outs.
Collagen Drops can be purchased in-store. You can also buy them online per box of 4 phials or as a bi-weekly subscription online at: www.heavenskincare.com - great savings per box.

Autumn Warmth Hair
As the weather gently starts to cool down and the colours outside the window start changing to warm, rich hues, the hair industry takes its inspiration from nature’s palette. With the change of season, our skin becomes cooler and less sun kissed, so this is a good time to introduce warm tones throughout our hair, giving our skin a natural radiant glow.
During the summer months our hair is exposed to extra sun and dryer conditions. It’s now when nourishment should be our top priority. This season gives the perfect opportunity to infuse your hair with much-needed nourishment and embrace a weekly treatment routine to help lock in moisture and maintain vibrant, healthy hair.
This autumn, copper tones are
stealing the spotlight as a favoured trend. The beautiful thing with copper is its ability to complement every skin tone. The secret lies in finding the right tone for you. For those with fair complexions, richer, deeper copper tones enhance their glow, while darker skin tones harmonize beautifully with sandy shades of copper.
A stunning example is Megan Fox, who recently made the leap from her signature black hair to embrace a fiery copper shade. Blondes remain an everlasting trend, and a favourite many including the iconic BARBIE played by the beautiful Margot Robbie. Drawing inspiration from the timeless icon, this season, the allure of natural blonde
beauty is on the rise. The Scandi hairline technique illuminates the face, reflecting a delicate blonde halo of face-framing baby-lights, shadowed by subtle darker tones will give you the perfect organic blonde effect.
Among our stunning brunettes, a captivating trend is taking centre stage as warm cinnamon shades. The shift away from cooler tones is undeniable. Dark-haired clients are embracing a deeper, luxurious pumpkin-spiced tones. This trend ignites a radiant, sunkissed glow as well as accentuating the beauty of darker hair. The rich palette of warm cinnamon lights is welcoming a new hair season for warmth, depth and tones.

Essential Nutrition for Mums
Well Nourished Mama was founded by Nicola Manford, a registered Nutritional Therapist and mum of three young children, based in Trefonen, near Oswestry.
An ex-accountant, Nicola has always loved food and after discovering how changing her diet transformed her own health, she re-trained as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist with the College of Naturopathic Medicine.
“I’ve always loved eating but had never really stopped to think about the link between food and health. Since training as a Nutritionist, I am still regularly blown away by how our amazing our bodies are and the impact our diet has on how we feel, both physically and mentally.”
Whilst training, Nicola fell pregnant and so naturally she started investigating the best foods to support her pregnancy. “I was amazed by the research, particularly around epigenetics (how a maternal diet can turn genes on and off in the developing foetus) and the importance of good gut health for both mum and baby and how it can influence allergies and food sensitivities.”
Nicola has since gone on to have two more children and knows first-hand how difficult it is to try and look after yourself when juggling motherhood, work and a busy household. “Motherhood is hard on the body – growing, carrying and giving birth to a tiny human is not an easy feat. Once baby is born the real work starts and mothers give so much of themselves over to the care of their children, for years and years, often neglecting their own health and personal needs. I want all mums to feel energised, healthy and happy so they can be the best version of themselves and enjoy this special time of life.
What is Nutritional therapy?
Nutritional therapy is an evidence-based approach to health and wellness that harnesses the power of food and nutrients to support the body’s natural healing processes. The old sayings: “you are what you eat” and “all disease starts in the gut” are now supported by the latest scientific research. The role of the gut microbiome, (the community of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses that live in our digestive system) on our health is one of the largest growing areas of research and the science is proving that our gut health influences our overall health and plays a
role in disease management and prevention.
At its core, Nutritional Therapy recognises that every person is unique, with distinct nutritional needs, genetic makeup, medical history and lifestyle factors. The process is built around the individual, using an in-depth assessment of their medical history, dietary habits, current health conditions and lifestyle. Nutritional Therapy also utilises the latest in Functional Medicine testing such as stool tests, blood panels, hormone testing and DNA analysis to help identify the root cause and drivers of ill-health or imbalances within the body. A bespoke diet and supplement plan is then created, and Nicola supports clients to make manageable changes to their diet to improve their wellbeing and achieve their health goals.
Who is the service for?
Well Nourished Mama focuses on providing Nutritional Therapy to women, wherever they may be on their motherhood journey. Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting couples to optimise their fertility, achieve a healthy, full-term pregnancy and supports recovery during the postpartum period. Nicola uses the latest evidence-based research to support mums through this unique phase of life, ensuring they are in optimal health to meet the demands of motherhood.
Nicola believes that every woman deserves to embrace motherhood with confidence and vitality. She uses her academic knowledge, clinical skills and real-life experience as a busy mother of 3, to walk beside her clients, offering the information, support and practical advice they need to ensure that what they are eating is truly supporting their health and wellbeing.
Further information can be found at www.wellnourishedmama.com or you can book a free 25 minute call to see if Nutritional Therapy is right for you.

Men’s Skincare
While historically the skincare industry was biased towards women, in recent years, the trend has shifted towards men being equally concerned about their skin and appearance. Men’s skin is different from women’s, and therefore requires different products.
First and foremost, it is essential to understand the skin type and its requirements. Men’s skin is generally oilier and thicker than women’s and often pores are slightly larger. Therefore, using skincare products specifically designed for men can help achieve better results than using those designed for women’s skin.
A basic skincare routine for men should include cleansing, toning, moisturising, and sun protection, with the addition of serums to target specific skin concerns if required.
Men should use a face wash or a cleanser that is gentle and doesn’t strip the skin of essential oils. An oilbased cleanser works well for this. It is also important to choose a product that is suitable for the skin type. Men who find they have very oily skin should consider double cleansing with a secondary water-based cleanser (after the oil-based one) which can help to reduce excess sebum and help mattify the skin, making it look less shiny.
Men who have dry skin and who shave regularly can also try using an oil-based cleanser in place of a shaving cream, as it can help prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Toning is the next step which helps keep skin’s pHlevel balanced, thus helping to maintain healthy barrier function. It also hydrates and preps the skin to better absorb everything else applied afterwards. My personal favourite is a spray-mist style toner which is quick, easy and super refreshing.
The third step in a skincare routine is to moisturise. Men should use a moisturiser that is lightweight, nongreasy and easily absorbed. It is important to choose a product that is suitable for the skin type, and also provides hydration without clogging pores. Moisturising helps keep the skin soft and supple, and also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Sun protection is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Men should use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of
30 to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Sun damage can cause premature ageing, dark spots, and even skin cancer. It is important to apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours if exposed to the sun for long periods. This is my single biggest anti-ageing tip for both men and women.
Apart from the basic skincare routine, there are also specific products that men can use to target skin concerns. For example, men who struggle with acne can benefit from using a spot treatment or a face mask that contains salicylic acid, zinc and pro/prebiotics. These ingredients help unclog pores and prevent breakouts. Men who have dry skin can use a hydrating serum, such as hyaluronic acid or an overnight mask to provide extra moisture to the skin. Anyone struggling with a dull or uneven complexion can exfoliate once or twice a week to help promote cell turnover.
In addition to using the right products, men can also make some lifestyle changes to improve their skin’s health. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep can help maintain healthy skin. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also have a negative impact on the skin, causing premature aging and dullness.
If you need any help with setting up a male skincare routine then please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

Animals in Need
Volunteering at SCOOBY animal rescue sanctuary in Spain has been a transformative experience for Lucy Murphy, as an animal lover and passionate advocate for animal welfare, she was eager to extend her support and SCOOBY did not disappoint.
Founded in the early 90s, SCOOBY has grown from old, rented farmlands to become a haven for over 600 mistreated, abandoned, and vulnerable animals. From cats and dogs to horses, donkeys, pigs, geese, and goats, they cater for a diverse range of creatures, giving each one a second chance at life.
What sets SCOOBY apart is the genuine care and dedication of its small team of staff and volunteers. Their hands-on approach ensures that each animal is not merely a number but an individual with unique needs and emotions. Witnessing the transformation of these oncetraumatized animals into confident and happy beings has been incredibly heart-warming.
Lucy explained why she has been touched so much by volunteering here, “The sanctuary’s very basic designed facilities, include kennels, an animal hospital, cat runs and paddocks. Despite limited resources, every euro is utilized to provide the best possible care for their residents. The staff’s passion and dedication shine through as newfound sense of security and trust among the animals in their care.
“SCOOBY stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through compassion, determination and teamwork. It is a place where hope is restored for animals in need and their cruel past lives forever changed as they are rehomed to loving families across Europe.
“As I reflect on my time here, I am inspired to continue supporting charities like SCOOBY, who work to heal and protect animals in need all over Spain. The journey may be challenging, but the reward is immeasurable. Here are a few furry amigos I met during my time at SCOOBY.”
Phoebe, a 9-year-old female terrier: She’s gentle and affectionate, small but has a big heart, a true companion,
good with other dogs and lots of love to give, she thrives on human company and will make a perfect pet.
Kayan, a 4-year-old Spanish Mastin: This gentle giant is friendly, affectionate and gets along well with other dogs. Sadly, Kayan has been overlooked due to his size, despite being non-dominant and loving, he remains without an owner.
SCOOBY UK adoption process is designed to ensure a perfect match. Through interviews and home-checks their team will assist you with your adoption and guide you through the process. Once approved, they arrange safe transport to their wonderful shelter in Cheshire where your beloved doggie awaits you. All dogs are neutered, spayed, blood tested, and receive flea/tick treatment as well as health checks. SCOOBY’S DEFRA compliant vehicle and import process ensure a smooth transition. After adoption, you are offered follow-up support and rescue back-up. So, you can adopt with confidence knowing you’ll have ongoing support throughout your journey as a loving and responsible pet owner.
Adopting a rescue dog can be a truly rewarding experience. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet please consider giving a loving home to a rescue dog.

Law firm’s Harry Potter t H eme P rovides va Luab L e L esson for students
A group of students entered the mythical world of Harry Potter to solve a hypothetical personal injury case challenge set by a Shropshire law firm.
The legal scenario was set up by Lanyon Bowdler during a visit to its offices by students from Idsall School in Shifnal on one of the school’s Work Experience Safari Days - and it proved to be quite a learning curve for the youngsters.
Students were tasked with discussing and negotiating a personal injury award around a theme of Ron Weasley being injured in a car accident with the vehicle being driven by Harry Potter. The project saw the students tackling the case from the positions of the claimant and the defendant’s insurance company, all looking to reach a fair settlement.
Morgan Hanley, a legal support assistant in Lanyon Bowdler’s court of protection team, said: “The day was designed to give students an insight into how a law firm works and the sort of cases we deal with in support of our clients.
Our People, Your Team Here to Help
“We also like to give them some practical experience by creating a hypothetical case for them to work on. On this occasion the students from Idsall School worked on trying to reach a settlement between Ron Weasley, who was seeking financial compensation for life-changing injuries, and the insurance company looking to mitigate any losses while addressing the validity of the claim.
We continue to offer meetings via telephone and video and where necessary we are able to offer face to face appointments, please use our letterbox when dropping off documents.
“It was a scenario that mimics what we do in settling cases or going to trial and was an extremely useful exercise with the students working through the process really well. It gave them some idea of the complexities of personal injury cases and the difficulties faced in coming to a settlement with an acceptable outcome for both sides.”
The students, who have recently completed their mock GCSE results, were asked to share their thoughts about the experience in one of Lanyon Bowdler’s Legal Lounge podcasts.
Morgan said: “It was great to hear that the experience had given them an interesting insight
into negotiation techniques and they were surprised at the high level of claims in personal injury cases.
“The students were visited by various experts while they were negotiating their cases, including heads of departments and solicitors with many years’ experience not only in personal injury and litigation but in departments dealing with all of the legal matters that might be relevant to Ron across his life, such as experts on Wills, and saw what it takes to run a successful full service law firm.
“During their visit they touched on several areas of law including personal injury, Wills, court of protection and property law - many people think only of crime in relation to the law and what lawyers do, but there is so much more.
“When we take students on the longer week’s work experience they rotate around different departments daily, get an insight into different areas of law, are given various tasks to complete, meet a range of lawyers and learn about the importance of providing a successful service to clients.
“The students from Idsall School enjoyed their experience with us and it was a delight to host them. It was interesting that during the podcast several revealed an interest in pursuing a career in law - so who knows, they could well end up working at Lanyon Bowdler professionally in the future!”

Extending the Deadline for Voluntary Class 3 National Insurance Contributions (NICs): A Path to Financial Security
In a significant move to bolster individual financial security, the government has announced the extension of the deadline for voluntary Class 3 NICs to April 2025. This extension grants eligible individuals an invaluable opportunity to fortify their state pension and enhance their retirement prospects. The decision to prolong the deadline comes as a response to the ever-increasing concern about retirement provisions in an evolving economic landscape, and aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting financial literacy and awareness.
The Class 3 NICs pertain to voluntary contributions that individuals can make to bridge any gaps in their National Insurance record. It is a vital option for those who might have missed qualifying contributions, such as self-employed individuals or those with career breaks, to maintain or improve their eligibility for certain state benefits, including the state pension. Prior to the extension, the deadline was set to close in the current tax year, prompting concerns among many who were unable to meet the original cut-off.
The decision is a welcome relief for many individuals who were unable to meet the previous deadline due to various reasons. It allows them to reassess their financial situation and make informed decisions about voluntary contributions. Whether someone is seeking to maximize their state pension entitlements or simply wants to secure a comfortable retirement, this extension offers a chance to act strategically and take control of their financial future.
By extending the deadline to April 2025, the government aims to provide ample time for individuals to seek expert advice, understand their pension entitlements, and make informed choices.
If you need advice or assistance to resolve any issues regarding national insurance please contact us at tax@dre.co.uk or by calling our office on 01691 654353 and we will be happy to help.

Have you ever looked in your wardrobe and wondered where that top you had disappeared to? Or can’t decide on a daily basis what you’re going to wear because you lost weight or your shape changed and nothing looks good? Reaching for the same jeans and jumper combo is just easy…mainly because they live on top of your chest of drawers!
This scenario plays out for men and women on a daily basis and is the cause of a lot of frustration and a lot of stress. But Shropshire based Jules Greaves, has been in the business of overhauling her client’s wardrobes for quite some time now. With a background in fashion and having owned a luxury leather handbag brand, Jules knows exactly what she’s talking about. As an Interior Designer, style and organisation come easy to Jules, which is why she has brought in her service of wardrobe editing. Finding interior design clients were requesting her help with their clothing, prompted the decision.
Wardrobe Edits are all about de-cluttering and organising your wardrobe to the point where your life just becomes easier. Your outfits and accessories are all ready to go and all the items that have been packing out your wardrobe for months or even years become a distant memory.
Jules’ clients are busy people who are in dire need of help to create a capsule wardrobe. This means getting to know the work and social habits of her clients and building a solid relationship with them, so the end result is something that changes their lives.
Jules explained how she helps. “Some of my clients don’t like wearing colour and prints and it’s
I can’t find anything to wear!”
my job to find out why. Just because they don’t like it, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t wear it. Sometimes they should be trying these pieces because they actually suit them and sit well with their style and personalities.”
When you don’t have time to visualise what you should be wearing for that important meeting or much-anticipated lunch date, putting together an outfit becomes a flurry of stress. Invariably, you don’t end up looking how you wanted to either.
“My clients are always grateful for my honesty. It’s not a scary process by any means and most of the time, they can’t believe they still have some of the things we find, in their wardrobes!” Something we can all relate to!
“Being left with a specific selection of clothing that is then organised by colour or occasion means having pieces that all work together in one way or another. There is minimal work left for my clients to do when they choose an outfit after we have created their new wardrobe. They can choose pieces relevant to the day ahead or the event they are attending
and feel completely at ease that they will look great and feel amazing.
“One lovely client of mine felt liberated during the process which took us a total of 10 hours! Once finished, she had a flow to her wardrobe, and she knew where everything was.”
As a style expert Jules’ job is to be honest with her clients and to make them feel comfortable. “I love to make them feel good about themselves and their clothes. There’s nothing worse than putting on clothes that should have gone a long time ago and feeling awful when you look in the mirror. It can affect your day, your meeting and your relationship with your body.”
Jules takes all the unwanted clothing removed from the wardrobe edits to Compton Hospice, who are then able to raise money by selling those items. In the last few weeks, she has given them 25 bags, amazing! Compton Hospice provide palliative care at the hospice and in the community.
If you’re ready to talk about how many drawers and wardrobes you have, contact Jules for a free 30-minute phone or video consultation, via dreamy.interiors@ outlook.com.

Whimsigothic
Whimsigothic style mixes up elements of victoriana, gothic, steampunk and boho. By blending different furniture eras, family heirlooms, deep colours, contrasting textures and filtering light in creative ways, it seeks to create a dark but ethereal ambience. It’s perfect for Halloween decorating, but also stands the test of the seasons, making it more about a gothic aesthetic than specific holiday themed decor. Go for dark colours like burgundy, navy and blacks, and look for items with small metallic accents and esoteric imagery. Fabrics in matt finishes; feathers and velvets, help enhance that cozy cavernous feel.

Mudroom Ideas
The mudroom, utility, porch or boot room. Whatever you want to call it, it’s the space that puts practicality above all else. Some have the laundry, some are simply a bench to take shoes off and others are spacious and well designed with deep sinks, dog showers and plenty of hidden storage. With the colder autumn days ahead, a space to kick off the muddy boots and dump dripping wet coats are areas that we either cannot do without or fervently wish we had. But they don’t have to be just practical. There are ways to add aesthetically pleasing elements to this most practical of spaces. Here are some ideas for ‘lovely’ mudrooms.

Renewable Energy Systems For Your Home
Ellesmere based Princes LHS Ltd are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors. Managing Director, Matt Smith helped set up the business nearly 20 years ago after working for another local contractor for 14 years where he started as an apprentice straight from leaving school. Matt is a firm believer in the apprenticeship program and over the years Princes LHS have successfully trained a number of electrical, plumbing and heating apprentices, many of whom are still with the company to this day installing the various systems they can offer.
In 2011, Princes LHS adapted to the changes happening within the industry, and after key staff members taking some additional training to upskill became MCS (Microgeneration Certified Scheme) accredited which allows the business to certify and demonstrate that all of their renewable energy installations are carried out to recognised industry standards.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.Tesla-Powerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” (www.lowcarbonhomesystems. co.uk) as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £5,000 Grant to go towards the installation of an air source heat pump, or £6,000 towards the installation of
a ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf. An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fueled boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display - both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels. This can be achieved by using a MyEnergi “Zappi” car charger which is also on display, as well as the MyEnergi “Eddi” Immersion heater diverter which means you can also divert solar electricity to your hot water tank.
Princes LHS Ltd are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps.
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey.

autumn show
Now that autumn is upon us, leaves, shrubs and climbers grab our attention with their change of colours, transforming to scarlets, reds and golds. So why not include some in your garden?
Climbing plants with spectacular autumn colour include Parthenocissus quniquefolia, or Virginia creeper, a sizeable climber that can be used to clothe walls without a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red.
For less extensive covering, consider Parthenocissus henryana. Its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veins that turn to rich red in autumn.
Another autumn climber, Vitis coignetiae, grows rapidly and has huge heart-shaped leaves with splendid scarlet and crimson colours come the autumn. It can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports, and the colours often improve in poor soil!
Amelanchier lamarckii (snowy mespilus or serviceberry) is a large shrub covered with lovely whitish blossom in spring. The emerging leaves change from a coppery colour to bright green, but in autumn the entire shrub almost appears to be on fire.
The small-scale blueberry is an acid-loving, boggy-soil-
needing plant that turns into a miniature ball of fire once it takes on its autumn colour, and two or more plants will provide a crop of delicious fruit.
Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a smallish to medium-sized shrub whose bare stems will be covered with scented creamy-white spiky flower clusters early in the year. The foliage changes from pale green to shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. It needs a lime-free or acidic soil and does not do so well in a tub.
Cotinus or smoke bush also has fantastic autumn colours, and is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves in shades of green, pinkish-orange or purple. The fluffy seed heads look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke.
For smaller gardens it’s hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows, depending on which one you have planted. They do well in large tubs and are perfect for a sheltered back yard or patio, and look great in a bed or border.

Millionaire’s Shortbread
Millionaire’s shortbread is a baking classic. With a shortbread biscuit base, soft sweet caramel, fudge and chocolate, this is a treat that everyone will love!
Makes 20 Takes about: 1 hour 5 minutes
Ingredients
For the shortbread
200g plain flour
50g caster sugar
1 tsp ground mixed spice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
150g butter, cubed
50g fudge pieces, broken into small chips
For the caramel
200g butter
75g caster sugar
3 tbsp golden syrup
1 x 397g can sweetened
condensed milk
1½ tbsp Drambuie
Honeyed Liqueur
For the chocolate
150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces
75g white chocolate, broken into pieces
Method
• Preheat the oven to 180°C / 160°C fan / gas mark 4. Grease and line a 20cm square baking tin.
• Mix together the flour, caster sugar, mixed spice and ground cinnamon. Rub in the butter until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the fudge pieces, then bring together with your hand to form a dough. Press into the base of the prepared baking tin. Prick with a fork all over and bake in the oven for 20 minutes until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely in the tin.
• To make the caramel, place the butter, sugar, golden syrup and condensed milk in a pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat and bring to the boil, then lower the heat until it’s simmering and stir for 5-10 minutes until thickened. Stir through the Drambuie Honeyed Liqueur then pour into the cake tin on top of the shortbread. Leave to cool completely at room temperature.
• For the topping, melt the dark and white chocolate in 2 separate heatproof bowls over a pan of barely simmering water, ensuring the bowls don’t touch the water. Remove from the heat.
• Pour the dark chocolate over the cooled caramel. Using a teaspoon drop spoonfuls of the white chocolate randomly over the dark chocolate and, using a skewer, swirl it around to create patterns in the top of the chocolate. Leave to set hard.
• Once set, cut into fingers using a sharp knife.

We’re on the edge of the cooler weather coming in, but after a late summer the kids can get away with some light layers. New Head at Wrekin College
The new headteacher of a Shropshire school has pledged to drive forward academic success whilst being respectful of school traditions as he welcomed back pupils for the first official day of term.
Toby Spence has taken on the role at Wrekin College in Wellington which celebrated an outstanding set of exam results this summer.
Moving to Wrekin from his post as head of Sibford School in Oxfordshire, Mr Spence’s teaching career spans both state and independent sector schools. His first headship was at a leading co-educational, international day and boarding school in Kenya.
During seven years at Sibford he was responsible for developing a highly-respected value added programme and embedding outstanding pastoral care.
“When it comes to education and doing the very best we can for each pupil in our care I am committed to leading a value-added programme that continually improves the academic outcomes for youngsters,” added Mr Spence.
“We know children all learn at a different pace and in different ways. Impactful teaching and learning is at the heart of an education that understands where a pupil starts from and how far they can go. Being focused and strategic in how we assess various skills and abilities and how we challenge them enables pupils to make progress and reassures parents that we know what we are supporting their children to fulfill their potential.”
Mr Spence said he was excited to start the new term having arrived in Shropshire as the school picked up results which saw the number of the highest grades at GCSE increase significantly upon pre-pandemic levels.
With previous roles as Head of History at Bootham School in York and Director of Learning at Yarm School in Stockton-on-Tees, Mr Spence brings a wealth of experience in areas such as staff motivation, progressive learning and teaching techniques as well as curriculum development to Wrekin.
“I am really enjoying getting to know the community here at Wrekin and believe there is so much we can all do together to continue to build on the success the school is already enjoying. I have been very impressed with the team here and I am ambitious for the future.”

It’s beautiful | 51 IT’S EVERYTHING A SCHOOL SHOULD BE... TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE OPEN DAY SAT 30 SEPT, 10AM MEET THE NEW HEAD PREP | SENIOR | SIXTH FORM www.moretonhall.org/open-day Girls 3 - 18, Boys 3 - 13 | Oswestry, Shropshire ‘Outstanding’ EYFS Provision ISI INSPECTION REPORT 2023
A Shropshire school has been named one of the best in the world for their high performance learning for the second time.
Ellesmere College has been reaccredited as a High Performance Learning (HPL) World Class School and will hold the status for another three years.
The international accreditation aims to deliver educational change, working with schools and teachers to provide a flexible learning framework, building cognitive competences and designed to achieve academic and lifetime success.
Ellesmere College was first accredited by the specialist teaching organisation in 2020 and school leaders are delighted they have retained the prestigious title.
Headmaster Brendan Wignall said: “We are delighted to have secured High Performance Learning World Class School Accreditation again and are in elite company with only 38 other schools holding this status globally.
“The HPL World Class School Award Scheme delivers a flexible teaching and learning framework that systematically builds cognitive competencies leading to academic and lifetime success.
“It is a programme we have fully embraced, has been hugely successful and something visitors to the College are asking more about because they have seen that we use it and are keen to learn more.”
Ellesmere College employs the HPL approach through the whole school system - from Lower School to Sixth Form. Professor Deborah Eyre, Founder and Chair at High Performance Learning, said both staff and students at Ellesmere were ‘delightfully committed and enthusiastic’.
She was particularly impressed with the
development of the College’s collegiate professional community that is wholly focused on making high performance learning a key feature of the College’s ethos and vision.
Deborah said the reaccreditation was a ‘considerable milestone in the school’s quest for continuous improvement’.
The HPL reaccreditation report said: “An incredibly positive feature of the school is the warmth and collegiality that pervades all aspects of the College’s work.
“The success of students and their increasing levels of self-confidence and motivation is palpable.
“The College recognises that schooling is not just about academic outcomes, important as they are, but the development of young people who can face an increasingly diverse and challenging world.
“Ellesmere College has made inspirational progress adapting its ways of working to include articulating how teachers teach and why they do the things they do.
“The outcomes for students, especially those with learning difficulties, are exceptional. One is left in no doubt that the Life Ready mantra is translated into a reality for those students able to have the opportunity to be schooled at Ellesmere College.”
HPL has proved to be a successful programme which dovetails with any subject or curriculumhelping to achieve academic excellence alongside a broader set of values and attitudes while supporting pupil wellbeing.
Ellesmere College will be officially handed the award at the HPL Annual Conference in March at the University of Warwick.

Harry feels the strain
Harry liked school football – it wasn’t work after all – that was in the past tense deliberately. It appeared his ankle was not as keen as he was. He tackled his friend Alan and felt his boot stick in the mud and then as he tumbled over his ankle stayed put, twisted inwards and he fell. At first, he just tried to get up – but then he realised his ankle was incredibly painful and didn’t want to let him stand up at all. He sort of knew some teachers did first aid training and he was carried to the changing room and with his foot up on a chair the teacher put an ice pack on the outside of his ankle –it was cold! By now he was the centre of attention for his class mates: “Wow, look at the swelling”, “Harry’s ankle has gone black!” Not the most encouraging comments and now it was really hurting. He had an egg-sized swelling on the outside of his ankle and a blue line of bruising underneath that. The school had called his Mum and she took him to the MIU or minor injuries unit – Harry was a bit annoyed at the “minor” bit - so he suggested to the nurse that they rename it the major injuries unit and could still keep the MIU signs. She did not seem impressed and told him major injuries were life-threatening so he accepted minor was much better. The nurse told him he had an ankle sprain and strain and the good news was that he had not broken any bones. She suggested RICE, which was odd as Harry didn’t see how eating a few grains of cereal was going to help his ankle and he told her this. Now she did laugh and explained that it meant Rest, Ice treatment, Compression with a bandage and Elevation – or raising his ankle when he could and particularly for the rest of
Dr Paul Middleton
the day. He was given crutches, which were a lot more difficult to use then he thought. The nurse gave a list of exercises to try and told him it would take some weeks to get better. That evening his ankle ached like mad, even after he had had some pain killers. His mum gave him ibuprofen as she said it was an “antiinflammatory” and his ankle was inflamed. The next morning it was still really difficult to put his foot down and that got him the Friday off school. He googled ankle injuries: apparently, he had an inversion injury which was where your foot turned inwards too much. His foot was held on to his leg by ligaments and the ankle itself had a sort of lining called a joint capsule. Injuring both meant it was a strain and a sprain. The other problem was these ligaments didn’t just hold your foot on – they had little sensors that told your brain where your foot was as you walked. Harry thought that was great and had never really thought how he managed to walk without looking down all the time – the body was awesome! Sadly when you damaged the ligaments the sensors went haywire and the exercises were designed to help them start working again - otherwise he might just twist it again without even trying!
It did take a week to get off the crutches: he had trouble getting them back off his friends at school who all wanted a go! He was nicknamed “hop-a-long” and that took a bit longer to shift! He was told no football that term and that he had to “break in” (a bad term of phrase Harry thought after one injury already) his ankle with some cycling and gentle running first. First game back he scored, with the same ankle!

Being a foster carer is a challenge, not only because of the complexities that a foster child may present but also because it changes the dynamics in the family home, especially if you already have children of your own.

For many of us, the contents of our will are the final message we send to our families, friends and wider community about who we are and how we want to be remembered.
After taking care of loved ones, consider leaving a gift to charity in your will. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, now more than ever charities rely on income from legacies. In fact, many charities would not survive without gifts in wills – and a gift in your will costs you nothing and will ensure the good work of your chosen charity lives on.
Where to start
The pandemic has helped many of us to realise the importance of charities to our lives and the willingness of so many to help in a crisis.
First decide to whom you’d like to leave a legacy. It can be a cause close to your heart, such as a local hospice, youth organisation or branch of an animal welfare charity, or one of the national/international organisation such as Save The Children, UNICEF or Cancer Research UK.
You do not need to write a new will to include a gift to a charity. A codicil allows for you to make minor alterations to your will without the need to rewrite the original document. However, if you have more than one or two minor changes, it’s generally recommended that you write a new will. A codicil follows a certain format and has the same strict execution requirements as a will – it will need to be witnessed and signed in the same way as a will.
It pays to remember a charity
Legacies can reduce the amount of inheritance tax that will need to be paid on an estate. For example, those giving away 10 per cent of their net estate can benefit from a discounted inheritance tax rate of 36 per cent (from 40 per cent) across the remainder of their estate.
Another option could be to consider creating a charitable trust, which would ensure your money is dispensed over an extended period of time. The trust will be registered with the Charity Commission, and the trustees will distribute income and also capital to charities following your directions, by way of a ‘letter of wishes’. There will be fees involved in setting up a trust. Contact a law firm/solicitor that specialises in this area for more information.
How your gift is used
Your gift could help your chosen charity in many ways, but if there is a specific way you would like it to be used it is best to talk to them about it first, as it might not always be possible for the charity to use it in the way you wish.
You are under no obligation to tell your chosen charity you are leaving them a legacy – in fact, many people prefer not to say anything.

Running is one of the best ways to get fit. There are no gym fees, no opening times to fit in around and no complicated rules to learn. It’s great for your heart, lungs, stamina and mental health. And you can start with just one minute of running at a time.
Useful apps
NHS Couch to 5k builds your fitness up gradually over nine weeks. You’ll start by alternating one-minute bursts of running or jogging with 90 seconds of walking.
If you don’t fancy Couch to 5k, track your progress with Strava instead.
Zombies, Run! puts you in the role of a survivor in a zombie apocalypse. There are numerous missions to complete, and when zombies are near you’ll need to run (or walk) faster to stop them catching you and stealing all the virtual supplies you’ve collected.
What you’ll need
Decent, supportive trainers are essential. Ideally, head to a sports shop to get a gait analysis and recommendations. Trainers can be pricey though, so look out for sales and check online stores like www. sportsshoes.com. In most cases, you’ll want to size up from your usual shoe size to avoid bruised toenails!
You might also want to add the following to your kit list (Christmas is approaching after all):
• Running leggings or shorts (look for ones with a pocket for your keys)
• Sports bra (a must for most women)
• Sports T-shirt
• Easy grip running water bottle or hydration backpack
• Head torch if you’re planning to run in the dark
• Something hi-vis (essential if you’re planning to run on a road), e.g. a vest, jacket or sports T-shirt
• Running belt or armband for your phone
If you’re on a tight budget, there are several Facebook selling groups for second-hand sports gear. One of the best is ‘Sh*t Kit That Dunt Fit’ (replace the asterisk), where people offer items for free. You just pay the postage costs. The expectation is that you’ll then offer items in the future when you’re able to.
Keep going…
An injury can put you out of action for months, so make sure to warm up, cool down and stretch properly. You’ll find lots of useful videos on YouTube and guidance to essential stretches on www.runnersworld.co.uk.
One way to reduce injury and fatigue is to ‘Jeff’. This is where you have short, timed bursts of running and walking and stick to the same ratio, e.g. run for two minutes/walk for 30 seconds. Search online for ‘jeffing training plan’.
It can be difficult to keep your motivation up through the colder months. One of the best solutions is to find a running buddy or join a club. While some clubs are for experienced runners, others are very welcoming to newbies and won’t mind if you need to run/walk and take regular breaks.

Shoulders
By Scott Gormley
Shoulder pain is a common issue among adults and can significantly impact daily life. Understanding the causes and mechanisms behind shoulder pain is crucial for effective rehabilitation. In this issue, we will delve into the complexities of shoulder pain in adults, exploring the various factors that contribute to its development and how physiotherapy can help alleviate the pain. Let’s dive in and gain a deeper understanding of shoulder pain in adults.
Shoulder pain can have a variety of causes, ranging from acute injuries to chronic conditions. Some common causes include rotator cuff tears, tendonitis, bursitis, frozen shoulder, and arthritis. Poor posture, overuse of the shoulder, and muscle imbalances can also contribute to shoulder pain. Understanding the underlying causes of shoulder pain is essential for effective pain management and rehabilitation. By identifying the cause of the pain, physiotherapy can target the specific issues and provide personalized treatment plans for a successful recovery.
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in treating shoulder pain and promoting rehabilitation. Through a combination of targeted exercises, manual therapy, and other specialized techniques, physiotherapy aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall shoulder function. With the expertise of a physiotherapist, you can expect personalized treatment plans that address the root causes of your shoulder pain, leading to a more effective and long-lasting recovery. Trust in the power of physiotherapy to help you overcome shoulder pain and regain your quality of life.
Exercises are an important component of shoulder pain rehabilitation. They can help strengthen the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint, improve flexibility, and alleviate pain. Incorporating exercises like shoulder rolls, wall push-ups, and resistance band exercises into your routine can aid in your recovery and
provide much-needed relief. Consult with a physiotherapist to determine the best exercises for your specific condition and start your journey towards a pain-free shoulder.
Physiotherapy offers numerous benefits for shoulder pain rehabilitation. Through targeted exercises and manual therapy, physiotherapy can effectively reduce pain and improve mobility. It also helps to enhance overall shoulder function, allowing you to regain your quality of life without constant pain and discomfort. Trust in the expertise of a physiotherapist to guide you towards a successful recovery and longlasting relief from shoulder pain.
It’s important to know when it’s time to seek medical attention for your shoulder pain. While many cases of shoulder pain can be managed with physiotherapy and at-home remedies, there are instances where professional medical assistance is necessary. If your shoulder pain persists or worsens despite your best efforts, or if you experience sudden severe pain or a loss of function in your shoulder, it’s time to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the appropriate treatment plan for your specific condition. Don’t hesitate to seek medical attention if needed – your shoulder health is worth it.

With its white-sand beaches, stunning mountain scenery and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder Cape Verde is becoming one of the UK’s favourite spots for winter sun.
This idyllic archipelago may be known for its winning combination of sun, sea and sand, but with ten islands to explore there’s plenty of room for adventure too. Here are five reasons to consider Cape Verde when planning your next winter break – and what not to miss while you’re there.
The beaches are divine
Powder-soft sand washed by turquoise sea, lined with swaying palm trees: the beaches in Cape Verde are paradise.
Sal, the archipelago’s most popular island, is home to the gorgeous Santa Maria beach, where bustling bars, shops and restaurants offer a welcome break from the midday sun. Fancy a little more peace and quiet? On the island of Boa Vista, you’ll find unspoilt stretches of sand with barely a soul in sight to share them with.
There are adventures to be had
The archipelago’s volcanic landscape, mountain scenery and cultural cities make the islands an adventurer’s playground too.
Witness Fogo’s lunar-like landscape or immerse yourself in Santiago’s lush green valleys. If you’re looking for a more cultural experience, you’ll love the island of São Vicente with its buzzing musical scene. The higher winds during November and March make Cape Verde’s beaches a fantastic place to practice watersports too.
You could see turtles and whales
Cape Verde is home to some of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites in the world. On the island of Sal you can visit Project Diversity, a non-profit organisation that protects the turtles’ nesting sites and helps hatchlings make their way to the sea. Visit
between July and December for the best chance of witnessing the tiny turtles’ journey.
The waters around Boa Vista are also a breeding ground for humpback whales, giving you the chance to book a catamaran tour to see these mighty mammals. Sightings are possible from late February through to May.
The festival fever is alive and kicking
Winter in Cape Verde brings with it a whole host of festivals and celebrations. Mindelo’s annual Carnival on the island of São Vicente is by far the archipelago’s most famous event. Held each year on Shrove Tuesday, the carnival sees the small Cape Verdean town come alive with live music, colourful costumes and dancing.
Taking its influence from Brazil’s Mardi Gras, the carnival officially lasts a week – but locals will tell you Carnival fever begins at the end of the previous year!
It’s the perfect place to go island-hopping
With each island offering its own unique flavour, why settle for just one? Imagine starting your holiday on the beach, followed by a couple of days spent drinking in mountain scenery, then the next morning you’re off to hike a volcano. If that sounds exciting, you’ll love an island-hopping holiday around Cape Verde.
Don’t miss a visit to the island of Santo Antão. A wonderland for hikers, it’s by far the greenest island in the archipelago.
