The town is alive with the sound of music Sophie Jones with boyfriend Josh on Mount Kilimanjaro
Oswestry couple scale Kilimanjaro to raise over £6,000 for charity An Oswestry couple have scaled Kilimanjaro, the world’s fourth biggest mountain, to raise funds for Parkinson’s charity and Derwen College. Sophie Jones and her boyfriend Josh flew out to Tanzania after months of preparation. Sophie said: “I wanted to raise month for charity, and I chose this because I wanted to raise a worthwhile amount and push myself.” Thanks to support from local businesses, events and a charity night, the couple raised £6,200 to be split between the two charities.
Grant money available for sports and arts projects The Rotary Club of Oswestry are inviting applications from local organisations for grants from the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund. Local author, teacher and naturalist Mary Hignett left half of her estate to the Club to support small projects in the areas of sport and the arts in the Oswestry area. If you know of an arts or sports group who could use some funding to get their project off the ground or over the line they have until 30 November 2017 to submit their applications to www.rotarycluboswestry.co.uk. 4 | Oswestrylife life 4 | Oswestry
The 28th Oswestry School recital series is well underway with a host of internationally renowned musicians set to perform at the town’s Holy Trinity Church. This is the first year that the series of six concerts will be managed by a group of supporters, after being set up and run for 27 years by former teacher Chris Symons. Last month world renowned pianist John Lill took to the stag in a thrilling night of music. The series continues with five more concerts, featuring, on 28 October The London Mozart Players, joined by Korean violinist Joo Yeon Sir and in the new year, former harpist to HRH Prince of Wales, Catrin Finch, the Endellion Quartet, former Young Musician of the Year, clarinettist, Emma Johnson with pianist John Lenehan and closing the series a Boroque music feast from The London Handel Players. Oswestry Sarcoma Team peddle up funds for Oncology research by taking part in 100-mile bike challenge A team of staff from The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) who took part in a challenging 100mile bike ride this summer have raised more than £6,500, which will go towards oncology research at the hospital.
Freewheelers joined thousands of other cyclists across the country when they took part in Ride London.

research into Sarcomas. Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and the fatty and fibrous tissues. Caroline Pemberton, Clinical Nurse Specialist from the Sarcoma Tumour Team, said she and the team are “proud and overjoyed” to have smashed their fundraising target. She said: “Ride London was a fantastic experience, it was challenging but the atmosphere on the day made it something really special. “It also felt great to know we were raising funds for such an important cause to us all.” From left, Ellen Harrison, patient pathway coordinator; Caroline Pemberton, clinical nurse specialist; Gill Cribb, orthopaedic oncological consultant; Naomi Winn, radiologist; and Geraint Davies, Macmillan specialist physiotherapist
Charity call for Christmas day donations CHALK CIC is planning its fourth annual Christmas day celebration at The Centre on Oak Street and is asking for donations from local businesses and members of the public. The day is open to all, particularly those who are alone or struggling to provide a Christmas for their family. CHALK director Gemma Cassin said: “Christmas can be a really tough time for everyone. The pressure of buying presents for the children, spending Christmas alone when you don’t want to be or finding yourself homeless over Christmas. It’s a fantastic way to spend the day. “We are keen to ensure that anyone that can’t leave their home and would like a dinner get in touch as well as families who need support to spend the day at home. Every year local residents, schools and the business community of Oswestry come together to support this vital service and we need your help again.” The group still need gifts, wrapped and marked with male/female and adult or child as well as non-perishables, goodies and entertainers. Donations can be dropped off at Costa and Lawrences in the town.
Golden touch at BIC The British Ironwork Centre is to create a statue replicating the story of King Midas. They myth of King Midas depicts the King’s gift of turning everything he touches to gold, which later turns out to be a curse. Theatrical designer and set maker Debbie Rees Deacon will create the sculpture from 1,000 brand new pound coins and she’s says it’s the costliest singular object she’s worked on to date.
If you think you can help or you’d like to have Christmas dinner with CHALK this year, Call Gemma on 01691 655895 or email gemma@chalkcic.co.uk. Oswestry life

Steep climb in visitor numbers to Shropshire hillfort Oswestry Community Games Oswestry held its fifth annual Community Games in Cae Glas Park, celebrating all of the sporting organisations in the town. The event, organised by Clive Knight, aims to encourage everyone to try new sports regardless of ability. The day’s guest of honour was Shropshire’s Kelly Edwards – a judoka who competed at the London Olympics in 2012 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games – threw herself enthusiastically into the role trying out a range of activities that she had not had a go at before. Clive believes the event has already grown from 2016 and thanked all those who supported it. He said: “It is very encouraging to see the progress made yet again in the variety of activities on offer that we have made from last year’s games. “Many thanks to all our local sponsors, to our working group, and in particular to Hazel Davis – our arts coordinator, who worked tirelessly throughout the year to help make this great event happen.”
It has long been called the Maiden Castle of the North and hailed more recently as the Stonehenge of the Iron Age. Now a sharp hike in visitor numbers to Oswestry’s Iron Age hillfort confirms its impressive heritage stature and tourist appeal. New figures from English Heritage, guardians of the 3,000-year-old monument, suggest that footfall has more than quadrupled in the last 10 years. Following the installation of a counter system this summer, initial projections put annual visitors to Old Oswestry in the region of 33,000. This reveals a significant increase on the estimated 7,500 per year accessing the site ten years ago prior to landscape improvements by the former Oswestry Borough Council and English Heritage. Helen Allen of English Heritage said: “We are delighted that, as a result of our partnership with the volunteers at Oswestry Heritage Gateway, even more people are being encouraged to visit Old Oswestry, one of the bestpreserved hillforts in Britain. This is a great example of how teamwork can benefit our heritage sites.”

Fundraiser
Friend raising money on behalf of
inspirational dad-of-five A local woman was inspired to launch a fundraising campaign by a close friend, who is a cancer survivor and carer, living with an inoperable tumour.
failure. Geoff’s weight plummeted, and he was subject to a number of emergency trips to hospital. After five months of intense chemotherapy, Geoff’s tumour has stabilised but is currently inoperable.
Lita Williams was touched by the situation of Oswestry man Geoffrey Moore who suffers from a rare thymic cancer, which first struck in 2000. She explains: “Geoff is one of the hardest working guys I know. Most people will know him through his youth work or his martial arts. Even through his illness, Geoff carried on as long as he could, working two jobs. He’s inspirational, always giving to others and I just felt compelled to do something for him and raise money for a great cause at the same time.” Lita, who works in Dorothy Perkins and B&M and husband Kev Williams have been friends with Geoff for 35 years and together are arranging a Halloween-inspired rock concert on 4 November at Morda Village Hall and Social Club to raise money for Lingen Davies Cancer Fund. Geoff, a youth services manager in Powys cares for his partner Karen, who suffers with secondary progressive MS and is wheelchair bound. They share five daughters and eight grandchildren between them.

In 2004 Geoff underwent open heart surgery to remove a tumour from between his heart and lungs, and, against the odds made a full recovery allowing him to return to his two loves; youth work and combat sports.
Outside his job and family commitments, Geoff still finds time to indulge his other passion; combat sports. An exinternational player and current judo coach, Geoff holds black belts in judo, ju jitsu, ken jitsu (Japanese sword) and a first dan in kick boxing, training at Team Elite on Oak Street. Geoff also competes in grappling and amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) as well as sports ju jitsu events.
“Geoff has been a professional youth worker on a variety of projects and national programmes as well as volunteering locally. He has been recognised by HRH and has twice

Undeterred, he is back at work doing what he loves; teaching and working towards his third dan in ju jitsu and sixth dan in judo, albeit a little slower than before, and battling fatigue and the side-effects of chemotherapy. Partner Karen remains a tower of strength offering support along with his daughters, friends and extended Judo family across the world. Geoff is eternally grateful to the Lingen Davies Centre and staff for their help, treatment and support.

New venture for Oswestry coffee company
The new venture will offer a variety of completely different coffees either as whole beans or pre-ground. Initially there will be a choice of 10 coffees, each with a unique taste. “Coffees are more complex in taste and aroma than wine,” explains Mark, “with a Kenyan coffee for example having a sharp acidity, whilst a Colombian coffee is very rounded with a nutty taste.”
We’ve become a nation of coffee lovers – the evidence is everywhere, from the high street to clothes retailers, petrol forecourts to leisure venues. The demand is forever increasing, but what about at home? Many of us have invested in one of the latest must-haves - the coffee machine, but many more of us still drink a cup of instant coffee or use a cafetiere. Oswestry-based coffee specialists Bridge Coffee are seeking to improve the quality of the coffee that we drink at home, with the launch of a new online business. Owner Mark Derham commented: “We’ve been supplying coffee shops and caterers for 17 years, and have often been asked where people can buy our coffees for use at home. Whilst we’ve always
“Coffees are more complex in taste and aroma than wine. With a Kenyan coffee for example having a sharp acidity, whilst a Colombian coffee is very rounded with a nutty taste” offered smaller pack sizes to people that asked, we’ve never really offered it to a wider market.”
Tea lovers are also catered for, with over 20 different leaf teas and infusions available, with more being added all the time. There will also be a range of brewing equipment for the serious home enthusiast, including espresso machines and grinders. To launch the business to the local community, Mark is offering free delivery on all new coffee and tea orders before 31 December. Simply visit www.bridgecoffee. co.uk and enter the coupon code “OswestryLife” at the checkout.

muted colours Gone are the days of bold statement pieces that overstimulate the senses, or gelato toned pastels that are sickly sweet, latest trend predictions are that this year it’s about soft neutrals and muted colours for a gentle, sophisticated palette. Pale greys, blush pink, dusty pale greens and blues, light camel, smokey peach - all either working harmoniously together or introduce just a hint amongst neutrals. Pair these tones with blonde timber, luxurious fabrics like linen, velvet and leather and lots of natural, heavily textured elements.

Discover beautiful Oswestry, right on your doorstep The unpredictable British weather can make it all too tempting to jump on a plane to a hot country, but why not take advantage of all that Oswestry and its surrounding areas have to offer instead? Oswestry’s unique location allows for plenty of opportunities for fun-filled and memorable days out. For a taste of local history, you can visit nearby Whittington Castle or the Old Oswestry Hillfort, both of which date back roughly 3,000 years and are some of Britain’s oldest known settlements. For those that love a taste of the outdoors, there is a generous selection of hiking and cycle trails through the beautiful parkland at Llanymynech Rocks Nature Reserve. If it’s a more laidback day out you are craving, you can hire a narrowboat at Llangollen for a relaxing ride along what is considered the most beautiful waterway in the country. Oswestry revels in its lively café culture, with an evening scene that can be as loud or as relaxed as you like. The traditional streets display an array of unique independent shops and a superb farmers’ market takes place once a month, attracting people from surrounding areas. As a town rich in architecture and history, art, literature, music and drama flow through the veins of Oswestry. Workshops and festivals celebrating the arts take place throughout the year, while films, plays and musicals are regular fixtures on the calendar. Oswestry has long been a magnet for artists and there are frequent exhibitions held at The Qube gallery, as well as the occasional national touring show. The recent opening of new music and theatre venue, The Ironworks, has led to a huge boost in Oswestry’s music scene. The converted industrial building is a trendy café bar by day and a vibrant live music club showcasing local and national talent by night. New sports facilities have recently opened in the town with a gym, two swimming pools, tennis courts and a workout studio. For young children, there is a soft play centre and an eight-lane bowling alley, for kids and adults alike. The town also offers a local golf club, which is home to one of the finest golf courses in the region and has an active social programme that runs all through the year. The gardens at the popular Cae Glas Park bloom throughout the year and have been a major factor in Oswestry receiving 11 consecutive Gold Awards from Heart of England in Bloom. 18 | Oswestry life

As I listen to the news this morning about a wallpaper company working flat out after many years - it’s music to my ears and symbolic of what I think. We know houses can be over priced by agents or their hopeful owners, so how is the industry dealing with this? Time spent planning before coming to the market, home improvements and listening to the advice of the experts by calling in the local agent, the decorator, builders, electricians, roofers and generally investing in the process . Shape- up and wise up because sellers are finally realising buyers are in the driving seat and this looks set to continue into 2018 - Listen or fall foul of the market.

What is ground source heating? Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills and carbon emissions. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year, typically 11°C. This energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water.
GROUND BREAKING HEAT SOURCE AVAILABLE TO ALL HOMES As winter approaches many of us have a niggle that the boiler might not get us through and we become more aware that we need to be thinking about the future of our heating system. As your current system gets older and less efficient, waiting for it to break down before making a distress purchase does not always mean you will make the right replacement choices. Don’t wait for it to break down – look now at how a ground source heating system could be the right choice for you. The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is available with ground source being a very good tariff for domestic and nondomestic properties. Dragon Drilling (Water & Energy) Ltd are experts in their field and not only were they award winners at last year’s Daily Post Business Awards, but they are the largest environmental drilling company in the UK.
START SAVING on your energy bills today!
If the answer is yes to one or more of these questions then call us on 01824 707 777 or visit www.dragondrilling.co.uk to find out how we can solve your water problems and save you money GROUND SOURCE HEATING Heating systems for both commercial and domestic properties. A celebration of colourful Cornus
To create a beautiful garden with year-round appeal it’s essential to pick the best plants, and few celebrate the seasons more than colourful Cornus. Commonly called dogwoods, these reliable and hardy shrubs provide a luscious leafy backdrop to summer flowers. As a final fanfare their foliage is transformed into a rainbow of colours through autumn before fluttering away to reveal brilliant wand-like stems. This seasonal transformation is just the start of a host of new planting partnerships that can be enjoyed right through until spring. During winter the brightly coloured stems of dogwoods catch sunlight to create dazzling displays. Small gardens might only have space for a single plant, so position it where the low piercing winter sunlight will shine through, catching stems in its spotlight.
Red-stemmed Dogwood (Cornus variety) PHOTO: Adam Pasco Media
yellow-edged green leaves and red stems, or the white margined leaves and red stems of ‘Elegantissima’ Shrubby dogwoods grow well in almost any soil, even moist sites and heavy clay ground. They’ll grow best in a sunny position, but will tolerate some shade. Contrasting colours always work well when developing planting combinations, so consider planting groups of two or more dogwoods together. Also try planting dogwoods in large patio containers to create seasonal displays with a difference, underplanting them with low winter bedding, leafy perennials and small shrubs.
No wonder varieties have been given names like ‘Winter Beauty’ and ‘Midwinter Fire’ as the intense rays There are dozens of plants to choose from as partners of the sun really bring those fiery-coloured stems to life. for dogwoods. Some can be planted behind them as Take a look at the whole range of shrubby dogwoods to a background to enhance the visibility of their stems, discover varieties with different foliage and stem colour while others provide flowering companions through combinations from ‘Flaviramea’ with green leaves #3836-Oswestry-148x108-F2-V1-V3-T1-B1-P1-13sept17.pdf 15/09/2017 winter. 3Choose carefully11:13 and your garden displays really and golden-yellow stems, ‘Spaethii’ with variegated, will become a celebration of colourful Cornus.

Year six students from Oswestry and surrounding areas recently embarked on a trip to Chester University as part a competition run by The Marches School. The trip was designed to ignite the aspirations of year six students and provide them with an insight into higher education. Students from Woodside, Holy Trinity, Trefonen, The Meadows, Whittington and Our Lady and St Oswald’s primary schools spent the day at the Chester University Parkgate Road Campus and attended a range of activities and including a ‘University Journey’ workshop and a graduation ceremony, where students collected their certificates wearing their very own mortar boards which they made themselves. Students also enjoyed a full tour of the campus and facilities by the student ambassadors and found out, first hand, what being a university student is really like.

3D- CRYO FREEZE BEST FOR
Stubborn pockets and body sculpting.
TECH EXPLAINED
3D - cryofreeze is a unique non Invasive treatment using a combination of Elctro and cryo therapy.Using the 3D - cryofreeze handpiece this creates vaum which draws the fat into the handpiece This localised area within the handpiece is then frozen , causing 20%-40% of teh fat cells in that area to die.
HOW THIS TECH WORKS
3d -cryofreeze targets specially the fat cells, By lowering the temperature to -6degrees it pinpoints the content of the fat cells, causing them to crystalize. No other structures are affected by this process. The remaining content of the fat cell is then disposed of naturally through the body’s lymphatic system.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE IMPROVED WITH 3D -CRYOFREEZE?
This treatment is best for targeting those stubborn areas that just won’t shift. Typical areas ideal for 3D-cryofreeze including inner thighs, lover abdomen and ‘muffin tops’, however your therapist will provide a tailored treatment plan to provide you with the best possible results which may include 3d -cryofreeze with other technologies as part of a treatment program. Two areas can now be treated simultaneously with the 3D-cryofreeze duo application.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED? Only one treatment is required per area.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM THIS TREATMENT?
On average you will see a 20%-40% reduction of the fat in the localised area. As the body takes several months to flush out the dead fat cells, results will be visible after 6-12 weeks.
CAN I COMBINE 3D-CRYOFREEZE WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
3D-cryofreeze is a one off treatment, however it can be devised as part of a course of treatments depending on your goals ,your therapist will discuss this with you.
It is great as a one off treatment for targeting stubborn areas but can also be combined with other technologies on the machine to enhance results. For example if you have a pocket of stubborn fat but also loose skin in that area, ir would be advised to combine 3D-cryofreeze with a course of radio frequency to both remove the fat and tighten/tone the skin.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING TREATMENT? First of all, an anti-freeze pad is placed onto the area of treatment, to protect the skin. During treatment the fat is drawn into a suction cup before freezing. This will provide a slight pulling sensation and the area will be cold. Within a few minutes the area will go numb. The hand piece will be on the area from 30-60 minutes to depending on the size of the area being treated.
3D-CRYO CHIN FREEZE
3D -CRYO FREEZE IS ALSO AVAILABLE FOR THE CHIN AREA!
Thios applicator handpiece has been designed to target the dreaded ‘double chin’
TECH EXPLAINED
Using the same technology as 3D-cryofreeze targets specifically the fat cells. By lowering the temperature to -6 degrees it pinpoints the content of the fat cells, causing a 20%-40%of the fat cells to die. No other structures are affected by this process. Oswestry life |

Rhubarb and custard
Festive treats
This New Inn at Baschurch’s take on a classic dessert breathes new life into it and for those of a certain age, is a reminder of the classic children’s television programme of the same name. Preparation time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 1 hour | Serves 6
Ingredients For the Panna cotta: 3 leaves gelatine 150ml milk 150g caster sugar Pinch of saffron 600ml cream For the rhubarb: 500ml water 200g caster sugar 100ml grenadine 1 vanilla pod 2 sticks of rhubarb
For the meringue: 150g egg whites 110g caster sugar
For the honeycomb: 160g caster sugar 80g golden syrup 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda For the jelly: 5 leaves gelatine Reserved poaching liquor
Method
For the meringue Begin by preparing the meringues, as they’ll take the longest. Preheat the oven to 100°c, whisk the egg whites into soft peaks, gradually adding in the caster sugar. Place the mixture into a piping bag before piping small peaks of mixture onto a sheet of baking paper. Then, bake for one hour or until the meringues come away from the baking sheet without leaving any residue.
For the Panna cotta To make the Panna cotta, first soak the gelatine in cold water until it blooms. Add the rest of the ingredients into a pan and bring it to the boil. Squeeze the gelatine to rid it of any excess water, and then whisk into the cream mixture in the pan before allowing to cool slightly and then pouring into glasses.
For the rhubarb To prepare the rhubarb, put the water, sugar, grenadine and scraped vanilla pod into a pan and then bring it to the boil. Peeling the rhubarb and cutting it into 2cm pieces add it to the pan and poach it until it is al dente before removing and putting it aside. Keep the poaching liquor however as you will need it to make the jelly. For the jelly Place five leaves of gelatine into cold water to bloom. Warm the poaching liquor and then add the gelatine, making sure that any excess water has been squeezed off. Then allow to cool to room temperature while making the honeycomb. To make the honeycomb Add the caster sugar and syrup into a pan and heat until amber in colour (on a sugar thermometer the temperature should be around 150°c). At this temperature, whisk in the bicarbonate of soda and pour it onto a baking sheet before allowing it to cool before breaking it into pieces. To serve When the Panna cotta has set, pour over the jelly to a depth of 5mm. Allow the jelly to set in a fridge before adding three sticks of poached rhubarb, meringue, and the broken pieces of honeycomb.
With Christmas on its way we are all starting to stock up on a few festive treats, and buy gifts for our nearest and dearest. These are just a handful of the interesting range of spirits we have in stock: Toffoc - £19/70cl Handmade, triple distilled grain vodka with Welsh caramel. Made in Anglesey by Dewi and Padrig, Toffoc is sweet and smooth without becoming sickly and sticky. Extremely popular to sip on ice or as a fabulous cocktail spirit. Penderyn - £12.50/2x5cl with tasting glass A gift pack from Welsh Penderyn, boxing up a pair of mini bottles of their superb whisky with a branded Glencairn tasting glass to pour them into. Shropshire Spirit Company – Salopian No 1 - £39/70cl (minis also available) Salopian Gin No.1 is a distinctively smooth gin, made from a botanical mix of junipers, Shropshire strawberries and raspberries and two secret ingredients, it shuns traditional London Dry recipes that can leave a harsh lingering taste. Instead, a subtle marriage of juniper and strawberries flow over the tongue before the strawberries burst into life. Merywen - £39/70cl Handmade in a small copper pot still in the Conwy hills Merywen small batch gin comes in hand-labelled and numbered bottles and makes a stunning gift. Detail is the key with Merywen – all the ingredients are foraged and gathered in the Welsh hills, including juniper, heather and gorse. A classic and fresh juniper-led gin, this is fabulous served with a good quality light tonic water and a slice of grapefruit.
Enjoy!

Culture
There they meet the full force of colonial prejudice with Japanese nationals viewing Koreans as filthy and no-good. The novel explores what it is to be an alien and outsider in a foreign land, despised by the rest of the society you live in.
Book review Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, published by Head of Zeus
This novel provides a compassionate, detailed description of Korean history spanning 100 years, told through the stories of four generations of a simple Korean family. I had little awareness of the geography and culture of this area and found reading this story helped my understanding of what is currently happening in that region of the world. The story opens in the early 1900s in a coastal village in Japanese occupied, Southern Korea. We meet much loved only child Sunja, who after the death of her father has to work all hours helping her mother eke out a very basic existence. Sunja, unable to read and write with a simple, innocent view of the world, falls pregnant by
a local gangster. Upon finding that he is already married with a wife and children in Japan, Sunja rejects his idea of living as a kept woman and when a local pastor Isak, offers her the chance to escape, she accepts. They marry and flee their homeland to live in an ethnic Korean neighbourhood in Osaka, Japan.
Through the eyes of Sunja’s sons and grandson we see how the various generations negotiate this question of cultural identity in very different ways. Sunja’s youngest son, Mozasu feels that he is between cultures. Although born in Japan and rich and successful, he is regarded as ‘another dirty Korean’. The eldest son Noa rejects all things Korean and essentially becomes Japanese, yet spends all of his life terrified that his true origin will be discovered. Grandson Solomon, despite being educated in America and returning to Japan to a successful job, finds himself pushed out when his Korean ancestry is discovered. A very moving immersion in an unknown culture. Debbie Marais, Oswestry Library
Let a light shine for someone special this Christmas Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, look back fondly over happy years and to remember those we have loved and lost. For many it can also be a time of sadness, when the loss of a loved one is most keenly felt, a time when we particularly remember those people whom we love but, sadly, see no longer. But the Tree of Light is not only about remembering those we have lost. It is also about celebrating, a time to be glad and grateful for all of the gifts we have received and to remember how good life has been to us. A wedding anniversary, an engagement, a special birthday, a treasured friendship, the birth of a child; all of these things we can celebrate by making a dedication on the Tree of Light.

In the spotlight
Artist Luke Crump
You heard it here first; Luke Crump is going to be a big deal in the art world. Aged just 21 and living in Ellesmere, Luke’s pen, watercolour illustrations and digital drawings are fast gaining in popularity. Naturally curious from a young age about nature and the arts, Luke has managed to combine his love of both to carve a budding career in the world of art. “I used to love those craft kits when I was young; painting mugs and excavating fossils. I was the kid everyone would ask to doodle random creatures and animals.” At school, Luke took Art GCSE, but, regrettably he says, didn’t take it any further. Instead he chose graphic design and went on to study at University, before deciding it wasn’t the right path for him. “Most of my learning is purely from experimenting with materials, trying things and making lots of mistakes, with more to come I’m sure!” His style of art is detailed with a touch of humour, but he admits he is still developing. His digital artwork does have a certain recognisable style to it and his background in design seems to show through. Asked how others would describe his work, he responds: “I’ve had a few people cry over pieces,
(in a good way!). Commissioned portraits of pets that have recently passed, for example, the emotional responses are more rewarding than words alone.” Luke has obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), a clinically recognised disorder that can cause negative and intrusive thought and huge anxiety, but, says Luke, it can be a strength in his style of work. “OCD has been a large part of my life so far. Thankfully after treatment and lot of hard work the obsessions don’t dominate as much of my time and mental energy as they once did. Creating art has been a very therapeutic and healing practice for me. The disorder had some benefits, unveiling positive and strong traits in my personality, patience and consideration for others.” You can see Luke’s artwork displayed at local events and galleries. The majority of his work is available online from his quirky website, where you really get a feel for his fun personality. Modestly, Luke says his
biggest fans are his mum and dad, although his pieces are sold far and wide and notably, recently to New Zealand. “My most popular pieces are the local landscapes, particularly the Mere. Living around here I only have to walk for five minutes in almost any direction and I can be far away from everyone and everything, surrounded by nature. It’s bliss!” Luke has also got involved in larger-scale projects; painting wall murals and producing stage props for local productions. Like most 21-year-olds he’s not entirely sure what the future holds, but in the short-term he plans to exhibit in more galleries, get involved with local art groups and - after a recent stint in Malaysia -continue to travel the world while creating art.

Nostalgia
Down memory lane
Historian David Owen takes a walk back in time to discover the fascinating history of two more of Oswestry’s best-known streets; Beatrice Street and Willow Street.
Beatrice Street
Remarkably little has changed in this 1910 scene of Beatrice Street and The Old Fighting Cocks and today. The Fighting Cocks is regarded as a typical 16th century inn and was, until 1727, called the Lower White Horse (to differentiate it from the White Horse in Church Street). The gables of the building once projected much further into the road but were modified in the 19th century to improve the passage of traffic. Next to the Fighting Cocks, heading towards Albion Hill, was another half-timbered public house called the Upper Swan (the Lower Swan was further down Beatrice Street) and this appears to have been demolished sometime during the 20th century and replaced by Roy Evans Motorcycle Shop (Sissy Blu) and the Midland Bank Trust Building (Baldwins). On the opposite side of Beatrice Street was yet another public house called The Rainbow giving credence to the
story that Oswestry once boasted the highest number of public houses (per capita) anywhere in the United Kingdom.
Willow Street
Shown around 1905, this imposing entrance to the Market was replicated at the other end of the building in Bailey Street. When this picture was taken the entrance had been in existence in its pictured form for some 25 years, having been redeveloped around 1880. A public house called The Grapes Inn adjoined the market building and was demolished to form the New Street link between Willow Street and Bailey Street. At the same time the Market Hall was widened, and its entrance façade enhanced to include the imposing peak and the legend Oswestry Corporation Market. The building became a ‘shadow factory’ during WW2 for Coventry Climax who built fire pump engines. Incidentally, that same engine was developed further in the 1950s and 1960s and ended up powering the Hillman Imp car. The market building survived until the mid-1960s, when it was demolished and replaced by the ‘new’ Woolworths (Home Bargains) store. On the right-hand side of the road the pawnbrokers sign can clearly be seen outside Dale Brothers and, next to this, was yet another public house, the Bulls Head as well as the Boars Head which, of course, still exists. 50 | Oswestry life
Business
Farmers urged to look at tourism potential Oswestry and the borders are a “potential tourism goldmine” which farmers and rural businesses can tap into, according to experts at a recent farming seminar. More than 60 farmers listened to professionals from finance, planning and law set out the current state of play for farmers in Shropshire, who said diversification into tourism was a big growth area. Brian Evans, managing partner of Oswestry law firm Lanyon Bowdler and head of its agricultural law team, said the landscape was shifting for farmers. “Renewable energy has been the main form of diversification in recent years, but it is much less of an attractive proposition since the
Government removed many of the subsidies,” he said. “Bringing disused farm Brian Evans buildings back to life as tourist accommodation is now a great way of raising extra income, and with Shropshire and the Marches being something of a potential tourism goldmine, many farmers are going down that route.”
New policy takes worries out of rural law changes A new policy from Greenlands Insurance Services will take the worry out of rural law changes according to Mark Jones of the firm, who specialise in farm insurance. “Greenlands have a reputation for service and have helped develop
new products that fit in with the changes in farming,” says Mark. “The Rural Protect Legal Policy gives outstanding cover for most legal problems that affect farm business such as Trading Standards, RPA and Health and Safety visits. “The policy also covers any fines levied against the policyholder though with early advice from the on-call legal team most issues are sorted early to save costs and worry.” The Smallholders Insurance is now a market leader with good cover and comprehensive pricing for those who are not full-time farmers but have land, buildings and livestock Mark adds: “The ability to see clients around the kitchen table to review their policies is what we enjoy, the main issues at present are increasing livestock values.” To find out more call Mark Jones on 07967 387199 or email mark@ greenlands.co.uk

Court of Justice in the case of H v Land Berlin which is very relevant to your question. That case (which concerned a German law) concerned Clauses 5(1) and (2) of the revised Framework Agreement on parental leave, set out in the Annex to Council Directive (EU) 2010/18. The European Court of Justice has generally ruled that when the courts of any EU member state apply their own domestic law, they are bound to interpret that law, so far as is possible, in a way that is consistent with any relevant Council Directive. These directives continue to underpin our legal system for some time. In this case, the Court decided that the German law requiring a two-year probationary period was an infringement of the revised Framework Agreement on parental leave. This was because, unless the probationary period was extended, it was not possible to see whether or not the newly promoted manager was suitable before the post could be assigned permanently. This decision means that your employers may well have acted unlawfully. This area of law is very complicated however and we would recommend that you contact an employment law specialist for further advice.

Last month we touched upon just a couple popular mortgage products which saturate today’s market. With Autumn/Winter becoming an increasingly popular time of year to purchase, we thought we’d give you the lowdown on a few more...
PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS OFFICES AVAILABLE Remaining Offices available are:
Tracker mortgages:
5 person offices
These move in line with a nominated interest rate which is usually the Bank of England base rate. The actual mortgage rate you pay will be a set interest rate above or below the base rate. When base rate goes up, your mortgage rate will go up by the same amount. And it’ll come down when base rate comes down.
2-3 person office
This may suit buyers who can afford to pay more if rates go up but believe that rates will go down.
1-2 person office Price includes 24/7 office access, conferencing facilities, telecoms, receptionist, wifi, heating & electric, air conditioning & advertising space
Discount rate mortgages: The discount is a reduction on the lender’s standard variable rate. Mortgages with discounted rates are some of the cheapest around but, as they are linked to the SVR, the rate will go up and down when the SVR changes. This could be an option for buyers who want a low rate of interest but can afford to pay more if rates go up.
Offset mortgages: These are linked to a savings account and combine savings and mortgage together. Each month, the lender looks at how much you owe on the mortgage and then deducts the amount you have in savings. You pay mortgage interest just on the difference between the two. For example, if you have a mortgage of £100,000 and savings of £5,000, your mortgage interest is calculated on £95,000 for that month. When you use your savings to reduce your mortgage interest, you won’t earn any interest on them but you won’t pay tax either which is particularly helpful for higher rate taxpayers. If you have a good amount of savings and intend to keep them saved, especially higher-rate taxpayers then this could be the one for you!

Friendly and Homely.
October the 10th was World Mental Health Day. Mental illness has generally played second fiddle to physical illness: a surprise when you think that 1 in 3 of us will suffer some sort of mental health issue in our lives. Why is that?

There are many reasons why the burden of mental illness is often hidden. Thankfully the stigma society attaches to these problems has reduced but it is still there in some form and often patients themselves have anxieties about how people will react to their illness, so they keep quiet. Our understanding of the brain is still in its infancy really and psychiatric services are often the most under-resourced, so getting help can be difficult. Sadly, patients can feel guilty, or even worse, not worthy of help in their illness. The quote; “a problem shared is a problem halved” was never more appropriate but, for a patient, finding someone they feel they can trust is often a challenge. This year the World Health Organisation (WHO) focused on mental health in the workplace. Finding, keeping and returning to work is a real challenge and yet a supportive work environment can be a major factor in maintaining a good mental approach. I was often disappointed at the lack of compassion and understanding shown by, thankfully the minority, of employers. The WHO is now recommending that businesses recognise the value of employees with mental health issues, develop supportive line-management procedures, address discrimination if present and recognise the often unique contribution these people can bring to an organisation.

Winston Churchill embodied the depressive issues he suffered from as his “black dog”. Some historians have argued that these episodes allowed him to see the disastrous implications of the Nazis. Perhaps a rather dramatic example but patients with mental health issues can often broaden our life perspective and offer insights from their experiences. These insights can enhance their contribution to society. So, what can we all do personally? I recommend a book “Darkness Visible” by William Styron. It’s a short read but very insightful. Employers might like to look at the Mental Health Foundation website (https://www. mentalhealth.org.uk). We could just all perhaps talk about mental health a bit more?
Nurse steps into new career A registered nurse from Oswestry has set up her own business after serving over 30 years as a nurse. Judith Lea previously worked at RJAH, Chirk Community Hospital and Llanfyllin Medical Centre, before taking her final nursing post as a senior sister in charge of the medical centre at Shrewsbury School, where she was in charge of a small team looking after the health of around 800 boarding pupils.

In need of a new challenge and to be her own boss, Judith decided to set up Oswestry Foot Clinic, providing a variety of foot healthcare services. “I’ve dipped into foot-related subjects previously,” says Judith, “completing nursing courses on diabetes and dermatology to name a few. I’ve also got diplomas in reflexology and therapeutic body massage.” In addition, Judith studied at the College of Foot Health Practitioners in Birmingham to learn more and gained an accredited qualification as a foot health practitioner. She has set up a clinic in the ground floor annexe, attached to her home on Monkmoor Avenue in Oswestry. Only half a mile from the town centre, the clinic is a warm, comfortable and relaxing environment, fully equipped to offer foot care to all ages, including; diabetic patients, the elderly and disabled who are unable to look after their own feet. “I cut nails, treat corns, calluses and

Rambles with a camera Walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell focuses on the county town of Shrewsbury this month.
A hidden gem
Many of us from Oswestry will visit Shrewsbury to shop, and we all know it is on the River Severn. But how many have explored the river, just a few hundred yards from the busy shopping streets? I hadn’t until a few years ago. The stretch covered here is between the weir and English Bridge. Carry on from the bridge and you will reach Quarry Park. Do be aware that the path is unfenced, and watch out as it is a regular cycle path. If there has been a lot of rain the path may be submerged and closed. Though great to visit at any time, the river is particularly beautiful at this time. The easiest access is down the side of the old hospital. Get there by taking Windsor Place (the road almost opposite H&M) off Castle Street at the top of Pride Hill, and then turning left down St Mary’s Water Lane. At the river, turn right for the English Bridge or left for the weir. There is limited parking at the weir. Heading left, you will see the imposing station bridge. Beneath it, you feel you are in a cathedral with lines of beautiful columns. If the river is calm the reflections are incredible. It was built in 1838 to a design by Robert Stephenson and Joseph Locke. It is a double
arch iron bridge and carries the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton line. All of the iron was cast at Coalbrookdale. Carrying on under the sweeping arch of the footbridge, the river bears right and you will be aware of the roar of water from the weir. The weir was built in 1910 to raise the water level around the town. The river was used as the main drain, and when water levels dropped in the summer it became rather unpleasant. If the conditions are ideal, you may be lucky to see the salmon run, which happens around this time of year. At its peak, crowds gather, cheering the successful leaps. Despite being so close to town, there is a lot of wildlife; the pigeons and gulls are plentiful. I have seen birds of prey and several times an otter. Unfortunately, it was a bit fast for my shutter finger. In the winter you may see a cormorant or two. On your return look out for the tower on your right, high above the river. This is Laura’s Tower. It was built in 1790 by Thomas Telford for Laura, the daughter of Sire William Pulteney, as a summer house. So next time you are in Shrewsbury, take 30 minutes and have an explore, you won’t regret it. Oswestry life | 57

Kids fun Leafy autumn wreaths
Katie Millard of Baby Bird Café shows us how to design some awesome autumn leaf wreaths that are simple to create and make a stylish seasonal decoration for any home. Autumn is a great time of year to get out and about with your little ones, spotting all the wildlife preparing for the coming Winter. It’s also a great time to get crafting! Making leafy wreaths with fallen autumn leaves is a lovely activity - you can do a spot of leaf identification with a good ID book or using the internet. You can discuss photosynthesis with older children, or just enjoy crunching in all the leaves with smaller children. For this activity, you will need: * Paper plate * Scissors * Glue dots or glue stick * Good selection of autumn leaves * Length of twine or ribbon Method: * Fold your paper plate in half * Using your scissors cut out the middle of your paper plate, so you’re left with a ring * Ensuring your collected leaves are dry, arrange them onto your paper plate ring and stick on your leaves * Turn over your wreath and add a loop of twine or ribbon to hang * Place your wreath somewhere cool indoors and enjoy!

WIN A TINY TOTS TRAIL AT BLISTS HILL Blists Hill Victorian Town near Ironbridge, is putting some magic into Christmas especially for their youngest visitors with an enchanting festive trail for under-fives. Available on selected days leading up to Christmas, the fun, new Tiny Tots Trail of Treats will delight children and their grown-ups as they follow clues to find treats around the Town on 22-23 and 29-30 November and 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21 December.
Win a family ticket to see Awful Auntie live on stage at Theatre Hafren in Newtown When Stella sets off to visit London with her parents, Lord and Lady Saxby, she has no idea her life is in danger! Waking up three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell Stella what has happened. But not everything Aunt Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie! From the acclaimed producers of Gangsta Granny comes the world premiere of David Williams’ amazing tale of frights, fights and friendship, featuring a very old car, a very large owl and a very small ghost! “The Birmingham Stage Company’s Gangsta Granny is truly brilliant, so I’m hugely excited that they’re now bringing Awful Auntie to the stage. It promises to be a thrilling show and a total hoot - Wagnar and I can’t wait to see it!” DAVID WALLIAMS
Start the trail with a visit to see the jolly Mrs Claus in her beautifully decorated parlour. Here she will start the special day with a Christmas story at the fireside and a glass of milk and cookies for children and a hot drink for adults. Every child will also receive a gift stocking and chocolate coins. Second stop of the day is to fill the stocking with traditional stocking fillers. Next up is a fun toy making workshop where the ‘little elves’, wearing special elves hats, can make a traditional Victorian toy. The trail then moves on to one of the cosy cottages where you can help stir the Christmas pudding and decorate the wonderful Christmas tree with dried
To find out more about the show, visit: www.thehafren.co.uk or call 01686 614555. We have one family ticket for 29 November 6.30pm to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, answer this question: Who is the author of Gangsta Granny?

fruit, decoupage baubles and cinnamon sticks. The highlight of the trail is a visit to see Father Christmas in his grotto, where all tots will receive a special gift for their stocking to take home. LAST WORD Heading into hibernation With the air getting chillier and the days shorter, it can be tempting for us Brits, me included, to mourn the loss of another disappointing summer and give in to a case of the seasonal blues. If, like me, you have already turned the heating up to 25 as well as wearing your coat indoors, started eating three hot meals a day and feel like it’s too cold to go outside, it might be time for a kick start, a little winter motivation to carry us through. Let’s face it, we’re not in Siberia, although at times it feels like it. I’ve got a five-point plan to deal with all this winter misery though and I wanted to share it with you:
1. Embrace ‘gluggavedur’ As our obsession with Danish concept ‘hygge’ is dying down, there’s a new trend for us to embrace this autumn/winter. The Icelandic concept of ‘gluggavedur’ means ‘window-weather’ and represents the sort of weather that’s best enjoyed from inside, behind a window. The new trend encourages Brits to enjoy the simple home comforts, inspiring us to curl up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate and watch the icy scene outside. Sounds good to me! 66

2. Add some colour to your life It might be grey outside, but I plan to carry the autumn colours through the new season with some big colour splashes in my wardrobe. Red boots, leopard print coats and faux fur will all be making an appearance (although not necessarily at the same time, this is Oswestry not Soho). From wardrobe to walls, the transition from autumn to winter is the best time to consider some re-decorating projects to add a little colour to your home too. Combat the cool skies with warm walls, textiles and pops of green in the form of exotic house plants.
3. Get organised If, like me, you prefer to hide under a blanket than socialise in winter, use all of those evenings at home to be productive. Organise your finances, create budgets, research holidays, update your CV; all the things that there just isn’t enough time for in the summer months. You’ll feel better about life when all your personal admin is under control.
be further from the truth. Wrapping up in five layers of clothing and heading out, still to feel freezing cold and walk through mud is not my idea of fun. That said, I believe exercise and fresh air is good for the soul as well as the body. However much I dread going out on a walk on a cold winter’s day, I always feel better for it afterwards. And speaking of exercise…
5. Keep moving Beat the winter blues by staying active and continuing your summer exercise throughout the winter. When we exercise our bodies release chemical endorphins which create a positive feeling in the body and an energising outlook on life. Without the social life and under the layers of clothes, staying in shape might seem like something that can be put on the backburner until nearer next summer. But, aside from the psychological benefits, think of the physical ones; summer bodies are built in the winter.
4. If you’re feeling brave, get outdoors It would be a complete lie to say I was the ‘outdoorsy’ type. It couldn’t
