PM awards Oswestry curator of ‘The Welsh Guards Collection’

A former member of the Welsh Guards who has spent 30 years building ‘The Welsh Guards Collection’, has received Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s daily Points of Light award.

Stanley joined the Welsh Guards aged 15, serving in the Regiment from 1960 to 1968, and started to build the collection in the early 1990s. The Museum is now home to more than 4,000 Welsh Guards artefacts including uniforms, arms and memorabilia as well as over 2,500 photographs, preserving, in one place, the Regiment’s heritage since its formation in 1915. Following Stanley’s passion and hard work, the museum received full accreditation as a military Museum by the Army Museums Ogilvy Trust in 2014.

Alongside managing the museum, Stanley visits schools to share more about local and military history, and has curated special exhibitions across Wales, including at Cardiff Castle to celebrate the Regiment’s Centenary in 2015.

Secretary of State for Wales, David TC Davies, said, “Stanley has made a tremendous impact with his tireless and longstanding efforts in preserving the Welsh Guards’ heritage and I am delighted that his achievement has been recognised by a Points of Light award from the Prime Minister.

“As well as his 30-year devotion to collecting Welsh Guards artefacts, Stanley’s work in schools helps ensure that the Regiment’s history is recognised by future generations. Many congratulations to Stanley on his award.”

Stanley said, “I am very proud to be chosen for this award.”

Stanley is the 2085th recipient of the Points of Light award, which was first launched in April 2014 to recognise outstanding individuals making a positive change within their community and inspiring others. Each weekday, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements.

Trefonen fundraiser donates to pre-school

Back in May, the children from Explorers at Trefonen were very excited to be invited to join in the Trefonen community celebration for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. All really enjoyed the competitions to design a crown and to make a coronation wreath.

Lyndsey Paddock, Director and Manager at Explorers said, “Following on from the community celebration, we have been very lucky to receive £500 from the funds raised towards an item to extend our children’s experience at pre-school.  After much careful consideration, the children and staff chose to have a wooden teepee to use in our outside area as a calm place to enjoy some quiet time.  We’d like to thank the Trefonen community and Mel Oakley who was key in organising the coronation events.”

Oswestry Rotary Club supports stroke sufferers

The Oswestry Stroke Fund, as administered by Oswestry Rotary Club, recently presented a laptop to Drew and Janet Edwards to help them to spend more quality time together whilst Drew, who suffered a stroke earlier this year and has other health issues, is hospitalised.

With the demise of the Oswestry and District Stroke Club, chaired for so many years by Mike Garrett, the charity’s remaining trustees chose to vest the Club’s remaining funds with Oswestry Rotary Club to distribute for the benefit of the area’s stroke sufferers and their family and friends.

Janet was presented with the laptop by Rotary members David Davies and Tony Ridge who were able to talk Janet though how the laptop worked.

If you would like more information about the Oswestry Stroke Fund, email rotarycluboswestry@gmail.com quoting “Oswestry Stroke Fund”.

Shropshire High Sheriff takes to two wheels

Shropshire’s High Sheriff has vowed to take on a charity cycling challenge for the region’s main cancer charity.

Mandy Thorn MBE announced she would be taking on the Pedal the Borders Cycling Challenge, in aid of Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, in front of a room full of cyclists including 3 x Olympic gold Medallist, Ed Clancy OBE.

The popular sportive, which has raised more than £70,000 for local cancer services over the last two years, is making its return on Sunday, 10 September, with three brand new routes to choose from. There will be a 25km, 60km and 100km, making it a perfect challenge for both novice cyclists and those who are more experienced on two wheels.

Mandy, former Chair of Trustees for Lingen Davies and active member of the Board, will be taking on the 25km route that starts at event’s headline sponsors, Aico, in their state-of-the-art headquarters in Oswestry and works its way over the border into Wales before finishing back at Aico.

Helen Knight, Head of Fundraising for Lingen Davies, said, “We are delighted to have Mandy take part in Pedal the Borders this year. We are very grateful to have the support of lots of local businesses: Aico, Rix Petroleum, Henshalls Insurance Brokers, McPhillips Wellington, MED Equus and The Business Company. To now have the High Sheriff of Shropshire taking part is the cherry on top of the cake.

“Funds raised from the event will go towards a

number of projects. Most recently we have funded a Cooling Cap for Chemotherapy patients, TVs for patients in isolation on Ward 23 at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, as well as a thousand Radar Keys to allow cancer patients easy access to disabled facilities when out and about. However, there is always more we can do to enhance local cancer services, helping to improve the lives of those impacted by cancer.”

The new 25km route allows anyone of the age of 12 to participate, accompanied by an adult. It is an ideal distance for novice riders or those looking at getting back into cycling. Entry fees includes a training plan, medical cover, bike maintenance cover, on-the-road assistance, British Cycling insurance, a finishing medal, as well as two food and rest stops.

MAYOR’S MINUTES

A New Year

My Mayoral year has had a busy start with a varied programme of visits, which have been interesting, inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable. I already see that my initial belief that our town has many active voluntary groups and a good range of social activities and societies, was in fact an underestimation. It has a HUGE number.

During my civic year, I would like to help charities, groups and clubs and the people they would so like to meet, to find each other. We are all so busy and people feel they haven‘t got the time or energy to volunteer. During my visits, I can see that volunteers are the lifeblood of many groups, and they really enjoy their work. Many voluntary roles are flexible and even a few hours per month can be of great help. There are so many benefits to volunteering. Alongside doing something worthwhile, many volunteers report having made new friends, improved mental health, they feel involved in the community, it can provide useful work experience and it is also lots of fun! Not everything works out, but you can always try something else.

If you want to find out more and see if anything interests you, Oswestry Community Action, otherwise known as Qube (www.qube-oca.org. uk) holds a directory of groups. They can also help groups advertise for volunteers and assist with any necessary paperwork. Currently, there are a wide range of opportunities on offer including costume design, community gardening, furniture restoration, first responding, befriending and charity shop work - something to suit everyone. I still meet people who are not aware that we have a cinema at Kinokulture and a great local theatre, Attfield Theatre based at the Guildhall. I‘m keen to promote Oswestry’s wide range of activities and services so that our town continues to better connect and thrive. If you think you can help in any way, please get in touch. I‘m always looking to learn more about our community.

Take to the skies

The Oswestry Balloon Carnival is all set for a thrilling weekend on 19-20 August with around 20 fabulous hot air balloons looking to take to the skies!

Taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Cae Glas Park in Oswestry town centre, this unforgettable family event has lots to offer including performances from Raptor Cheerleaders and Border Counties Gymnastics, football fun and games with the TNS Foundation. Music from The People’s Show Choir Shrewsbury, plus the magical alpacas are back, and much more.

There will be a wide selection of food and drink exhibitors inside the park, with a variety of stalls from local businesses and organisations.

This year, the much-anticipated Night Glow takes place on Saturday 19 August at 9pm with a stunning display of light and music from a host of tethered balloons. And keep your eyes peeled for an ‘out of this world’ surprise!

Whilst entrance to the park is free, visitors will be asked to make a £1 donation to raise funds for event organisers, Nightingale House Hospice charity.

Elise Jackson, Events and Campaigns Manager at Nightingale House Hospice is looking forward to what promises to be a spectacular carnival. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Oswestry Town Council, Spirit Operations and Oswestry BID, to once again put on this exciting event in Oswestry,” she said.

“Donations from visitors over the weekend will help towards costs for the hospice, which provides vital specialist palliative care services for those with life-limiting illnesses across the community. On behalf of the hospice, I would like to thank our partners, the people of Oswestry and importantly all those people who attend the event and make donations, thank you!”

Given the importance of health and safety in the park, the organisers have made some changes to improve access to the event. As such, this year, there will be no requirement for wristbands.

In the event that the park reaches its full capacity, then to maintain a safe environment for all, access to the park will be based on a straightforward, one-in-one-out basis.

Whilst it is hoped to see hot air balloon flights early on Saturday and Sunday, and perhaps some early evening flights too, the organisers would like to make clear that all decisions on flights are taken by the Flight Director after a full assessment of weather conditions.

This amazing event is run in association with Spirit Operations and co-sponsors, Oswestry Town Council and Oswestry BID (Business Improvement District). For more information, visit: www.oswestryballooncarnival.info or on Facebook at Oswestry Balloon Carnival

Treating fleas and ticks naturally

Infestations can cause misery for both you and your pet. Ticks and fleas are particularly prevalent in warmer weather.

Common Treatment: Avoid pharmaceutical oral treatments as they work by poisoning and paralysing the pest when it feeds on your pet’s blood. Unfortunately, when using these isoxazoline class drugs there’s potential for them to cause neurological damage in your pet. Reactions can include muscle tremors, impaired movement, poor coordination, and seizures. Infused collars, spot-ons and medicated shampoos may contain harmful chemicals e.g., sodium benzoate.

Safe Flea and Tick Prevention: Use essential oils to make your own repellent, collars, bandanas and shampoos.

Use 3 to 6 drops of essential oil to an ounce of carrier oil like sweet almond oil.

Remember: Essential oils are very potent, so never use them undiluted on your pet. Your pet’s sense of smell is hundreds of times more sensitive than yours!

Safe Essential Oils for Pets: Rosewood, Myrrh, Bay leaf, Lavender, Eucalyptus (radiata), Cedar (atlantica), Clary sage, Rosemary (avoid for dogs with seizures AND CATS).

Unsafe Essential Oils for Pets: Tea Tree, Cinnamon, Peppermint, Clove, Citrus, Sweet Basil, Birch, Wintergreen, Oregano, Thyme.

Collars and Bandanas: Create your own flea and tick collar by using diluted essential oils as instructed above. Then add a few drops to a fabric collar or bandana but use them for outings only. Take them off indoors so they are not inhaling the oils 24/7.

Garlic - Feed your pet half a clove 2x week. It makes their blood unpalatable for the pests to feed on.

Amber Collars - The acid content in amber (8%) combines with static electricity produced from the stones rubbing against your pet’s fur, which repels fleas and ticks.

REMEMBER - Treat your pet, whole family, home and yard if there is an infestation!

Oswestry Senior Citizens Club Wants YOU!

Oswestry Senior Citizens Club celebrates 55 years in service this year. The magazine was invited to meet with three of its members to find out about the calendar of events and why the club needs your help.

Oswestry Senior Citizens Club was built in 1968 with ‘buy a brick for £1’. Yes, it was literally built by the people of Oswestry meaning it is owned and maintained entirely by the members. Based in Lorne Street, the immaculately kept building is neatly placed and has ample parking onsite for members.

Clubs such as these rely on the support of members and the Senior Citizens Club is no exception. The club felt the impact of the pandemic, having to close its doors for two years. When the community opened back up again, things weren’t the same and now another two years later, the club’s members felt it is time to shout about how great they are and why you should be joining them.

Aimed towards people aged 60 and over, the club does accept members under 60 years old. If you are 90 and over you receive a free annual subscription. Currently there are a wide range of ages amongst active members, which makes for a great mix.

Having suffered the effects of the lockdown, the club are now looking for new members to come and join them and anyone who would love to get involved with helping share tasks to ensure the future success of the club.

Now halfway through 2023, the club has already organised outings to other towns – Liverpool,

Tweedmill and Stratford-on-Avon to enjoy things such as shopping, sightseeing and a favouriteAfternoon Tea. Member Mary explained how important it is to get out and about when you are part of the senior community.

“Sometimes, the older generation don’t see or speak to anyone for days at a time and it can take a neighbour dropping in for a cup of tea, just to make life better. Getting on a coach and taking a day trip to a different town can be so uplifting. It’s a lot of fun and you’re with likeminded people, so friendships do come with that.”

You can also look forward to fun events at the club in town. There are regular dance and social evenings which are extremely popular and include live entertainment and a buffet. People of all ages love Bingo and this is a top evening at the club with some great prizes to be won and laughs along the way.

One of the club’s most awaited event is their annual ‘Turkey & Tinsel Holiday’. We can talk about Christmas already, and this trip sees members visiting a chosen town, staying in a hotel with a planned itinerary and transport all organised. What a way to enjoy a Christmas meal and take in the atmosphere of

the season with friends.

Club member and Ex-Chairman Gareth Jones told us why they are keen to welcome new members. “Since the pandemic, some of our previously active members experienced changes in health and are no longer able to enjoy as much time at the club with us. We also understand that we need younger people to come forward and help with the organisation of activities.

“Some of us have grown up in Oswestry knowing this club and then find ourselves coming here. We want to see its future success to support the senior members of Oswestry. It’s a lifeline for some and keeps us all connected with our own age groups.”

The future of Oswestry Senior Citizens Club is dependent on everyone getting involved that can and “many hands make light work” as they say.

If you are interested in joining the club, please contact Ian on 01691 680202 or Mary on 07964 342936.

The members look forward to seeing you there.

Going From Knackered to Nailing it?

If you’re a midlife, professional woman, exhausted from the pressure of navigating all life’s responsibilities, we’ve got some news for you. Meet Sarah Clein from Wildflower Fire, a support system designed just for you.

Sarah’s career spans 30 years in leadership roles within the public sector as well as training and practising as a counsellor and coach. In 2014, she set up her own consultancy, offering a range of services for public sector organisations. Now, Sarah runs her own coaching practice and collaborates with organisations that provide coaching and leadership development services in the public sector.

So, why the switch? Well, Sarah had her fair share of dealing with office politics, leading within toxic, dysfunctional environments, and navigating an amicable divorce all alongside the joy of perimenopause! That’s when Wildflower Fire came to life. The name was inspired by those resilient, vibrant flowers that bloom even in tough conditions and on scorched earth.

Sarah’s on a mission to support midlife women who are trying to survive and thrive while balancing a multitude of responsibilities—raising children, supporting ageing parents, doing all the thinking about all the things, and navigating the challenges of menopause, all while managing big jobs or running a business.

Wildflower Fire offers tailored support in the form of 1-1 coaching, small group coaching, and team coaching. Sarah has worked with many women to help them handle difficult situations, manage stress, boost confidence, strike a work-life balance, get organised, build resilience, and foster positive thinking. Moreover, she’s helped women leave their jobs with dignity and grace, apply for new jobs or set up businesses.

experiences, support each other, and conquer common life and business challenges. In addition to her ongoing coaching packages, Sarah has exciting plans for the future. Later this year, she’ll be launching The Knackered Women’s Club, an online group coaching program that promises to be a gamechanger as well as a small group programme with another coach, The Artists Way.

Sarah knows first-hand that midlife women often find themselves utterly exhausted and overwhelmed after years of juggling numerous responsibilities and complex issues. The Knackered Women’s Club will provide support working alongside a like-minded group of women while finding solutions and discussing issues such as:

• Time management and organisational skills

• Managing difficult relationships

• Resilience and work life balance

• Energy, exercise and health

Sarah often starts working with women using a wheel of weary which is a quick assessment of where people are at with respect to work, family life, friendships, hobbies, relationships, and health. Based on the results, Sarah helps the women whom she works with, pinpoint areas for change and improvement, and together, they devise actionable plans.

So, if you want some help to get from Knackered to Nailing It, then contact Sarah from Wildflower Fire for a free 30 minute initial chat. You can visit her website at www.wildflowerfire.co.uk.

Aico launches free Kids Summer Club with support from SYA

Aico in association with Shropshire Youth Agency (SYA), is thrilled to announce the launch of its Summer Club this August, based at their headquarters in Oswestry.

SYA are a registered charity that helps youth clubs in Shropshire to get set up and keep going. They also run youth clubs themselves and deliver youth projects for others.

Aico in the Community was developed to give back to communities and to help make a difference. Aico’s Summer Club aims to provide a fun and educational experience for year 6 students and will run from Monday 21st to Friday 25th of August, from 10:00 to 14:00 every day, with lunch provided upon request.

Richard Parkes, CEO of SYA commented, “SYA is a Shropshire charity that supports the delivery of over 100 youth clubs and young people’s projects supporting positive mental health, youth voice and leadership. So, when the opportunity to partner with Aico came up, to deliver this really exciting Yr6’s summer club, we leapt at the chance. With our qualified youth workers and equipment coupled with Aico’s volunteers, site and skills it will offer a great, safe, exciting, fun-packed week for local children.”

to hands-on cooking sessions, interactive games, arts and crafts sessions, and outdoor sports activities. It will also include a trip to the local leisure centre for either an Inflatable Aqua Challenge or Roller Disco. These activities have been designed to encourage creativity, teamwork, and personal development.

Aico’s Summer Club will be led by experienced and qualified club leaders from SYA and supported by friendly volunteers and Aico colleagues whom are all safeguard trained and DBS checked.

We are delighted to introduce the Aico Summer Club in association with SYA and provide an opportunity for children in our community to have a memorable summer filled with learning and fun

“We are delighted to introduce the Aico Summer Club in association with SYA and provide an opportunity for children in our community to have a memorable summer filled with learning and fun,” said Jane Pritchard, Community Liaison at Aico. “Our goal is to create a safe and engaging environment for children to develop new skills, forge new friendships, and enjoy themselves.”

The Summer Club is open to all families in the local community with children of year six age. Interested parents can register their children by visiting the Aico website at www. aico.co.uk/in-the-community/summer-club/. Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

The programme will cover a wide range of activities to keep children entertained and educated. Participants can look forward

Animal Encounters

Animal Encounters is a locally based family run business, offering opportunities for all ages to learn, hold, pet and enjoy their animals. Co-owner, Jo Turner, has spent a lifetime working with young people in Education and Youth settings. Dave has spent many years working with reptiles and is passionate about animal welfare and breaking stigma about animals.

Jo explained why they do what they do and who benefits the most. “We have been working more in the Oswestry area which we absolutely love, there is such a community presence there. We had the absolute pleasure of working with Connect for Life who do the most admirable and amazing work with people living with dementia and memory problems. When they reached out, we jumped at the chance. We were able to bring lots of animals that we felt were right for the people. For every event, we work closely with the provider to ensure that we get it 100% right. We have the most amazing miniature Shetlands who are fantastic therapy ponies. They bring so much joy to everyone they meet. We also have rabbits, tortoises, dogs, guinea pigs and a baby goat who all are fantastic for settings such as care homes.

“Then there are the amazing

reptiles, from our Argentinian Tegu to our 11ft long reticulated Python, Sophie the Tarantula and Gordon our super cool Scorpion and everything in between. All ages enjoy our animals, and we just love to engage with people.”

Jo has always enjoyed engaging in education with young people in different ways, offering support and understanding their learning needs has always been paramount. This is where the animals come in. Whether it’s esteem and confidence building, teamwork or meeting curriculum criteria, they love to be creative.

“Animals offer an array of experiences, from sensual to comfort, joy, reminiscing but also challenging, facing fears, learning the truth about animals and just how amazing they are. They are also a great health benefit, they help overcome loneliness, reduce blood pressure, help in moments of panic and anxiety, we love working with additional learning needs too.”

Birthday parties are super fun and what better way to celebrate than with a giant python around your neck, a gecko on your head, dressing up a tortoise, or sitting on your very own unicorn? Super excited children and families coming together at a costefficient price.

“We have a whole set up for events and we bring certificates and stickers for everyone. Just to clarify though, our unicorn only flies on Wednesdays when the wind is in the right direction! She is responsible for many of the area’s rainbows, so when you see one, you can be sure that Dinky has been sprinkling her magic,” Jo told us.

“Making my dream a reality was the scariest thing I have done. With limited business knowledge, I have jumped out of my comfort zone. The response has been 100% positive and the business is going from strength to strength. I am so excited about the positive work we are doing and working more in the Oswestry area.”

Whether you are a school that would like help with a project, a care home that would like a therapeutic approach, a community event or birthday party – Animal Encounters are here for you. FILM OF THE MONTH

Confess, Fletch (12A)

Streaming on NOW and available to rent or buy elSewhere

It often feels we are living in an age of never-ending franchise films. Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, men in lycra and cities being destroyed, gets awfully boring after a while. The joys of grown-up films, witty dialogue and interesting characters seem like memories from a distant age. This month’s film choice, ‘Confess, Fletch’ will tickle the most jaded palate in the kind of mid-budget delight that just doesn’t seem to get made anymore.

The always suave Jon Hamm stars as investigative reporter, Irwin Fletcher, newly arrived back in the US from Italy to investigate an art theft and related disappearance. No sooner has he walked through the door of his rental apartment than he finds a body on the floor. It’s in the early scenes of his knockabout repartee with hard-bitten Detective Monroe, that you get a sense of the treat you’re in for. Fletch delivers a nonstop stream of wisecracks that fall on deaf ears as the cynical Monroe bats them away. As the main suspect, Fletch sets out to prove his innocence, solve the art theft and find the disappeared Italian Count at the heart of the mystery.

It’s a knockabout crime caper with a light touch that George Clooney might have starred in during the late 1990s. Fletch works his way through a cast of suspects including Kyle MacLachlan’s germophobe art dealer and

My Little Princess

I’ve got a Cinderella and a Sleeping Beauty too, Who snores as loud as Grandad and can always lose a shoe!

With tousled hair, in tunic, grey, as she returns from school

She transforms into a princess with frills and lace and jewels.

Her carriage is a tricycle, but pedalling the wheels Is really quite impossible when you’re wearing mum’s high heels! The lounge becomes a ballroom as she spins and twirls, oh, to be a princess is the wish of little girls.

Marcia Gay Harden’s seductive Countess, her constant refrain of “Flessshhhh, are you trying to seduce me?” only gets funnier. There’s a laugh out loud interrogation scene in a cluttered kitchen and everything gets neatly drawn together in a fun finale. Fingers crossed this is the first of several sequels, but for now, ‘Confess,Fletch’ hits the spot.

Celandines

I love to see the celandines in spring Along the banks and hedgerows, under trees, To watch their yellow stars, the light they bring, Their dainty heads all bowing in the breeze. As winter’s gloom recedes what joy to share Their message of revival, life and power, To feel a new beginning in the air, To be as one with every golden flower. In here the nurses come and go all day With clipboards, trolleys, magazines and tea, The doctor smiles but hasn’t much to say, My friends and tongue-tied colleagues sit with me. I note their anxious glances and I fear I may not see the celandines next year.

Meet the Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club

The first Rotary Club was established in Chicago in 1905, the first in Europe being the Rotary Club of London founded in 1912. There are now over 46,000 clubs worldwide, over 1,750 of them to be found in the UK. In the early years, membership was restricted to ‘professional’ men but now diversity is celebrated with the only requirements for membership being that you must be over the age of 18 and wanting to make a positive contribution to society. This is reflected in the Rotary motto “Service before Self”.

Oswestry is fortunate in having three Rotary Clubs, all reflecting the Rotary ethos but each conducting their affairs in slightly different ways. The youngest of the three is Oswestry Cambrian, founded in 2015. Whilst its main focus is supporting local worthy causes, it has in the past year responded to the earthquakes in Turkey, the floods in Pakistan and the crisis in Ukraine. Members meet on Thursday evenings at The Wynnstay Hotel. One meeting each month is a ‘business’ meeting when decisions are made about donations to worthy causes and future fundraising activities. Work, family and health issues sometimes mean that a member may not be able to attend these meetings in person. However, he or she can participate on-line using the ‘Zoom’ platform. On other Thursdays a programme of visiting speakers and social activities is organized.

The Rotary Year begins on 1 July when a new Club President takes the helm. Oswestry Cambrian’s President for 2023-4 is David Griffiths. His message to the members was:

“It is a great honour to become the President of Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club for 2023/24. I have

been a member of Rotary since 2020 and during that time I have enjoyed participating in many fund-raising events. As a club we have raised and donated many thousands of pounds to local charities within Oswestry and surrounding areas.

“Each year the president is asked to select a theme for their term. I have chosen collaboration. All three Oswestry Rotary Clubs do fantastic work in our community. In the spirit of the Rotary ethos, I intend to work more closely and collaboratively with these and other clubs. Together, we can pool our resources and talent to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt to a challenging year ahead.

“Rotary is a fantastic organisation that works quietly and effectively in the background helping to solve some of the world’s most difficult issues. Operating in countries afflicted by war, famine, poverty, natural disasters, and instability, their programs and initiatives make a real tangible difference to people on the ground.

“I look forward to a year of fellowship, learning more about the charities we help alongside developing new ways to raise money and public awareness of Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club.”

If you are over 18, wanting to make a positive contribution to society and thinking that Rotary membership might be something that you would enjoy, contact President David Griffiths by e-mail

▲Throughout the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Santa Sleigh can be seen travelling the streets of Oswestry and surrounding villages. It is hard work but is by far the most important income earner for the club and the excitement and joy on the faces of local children make it all worthwhile.

(oscambrianpresident@gmail.com) and he will invite you to attend 2 or 3 meetings/events to help you decide whether or not you wish to join. Cost of membership is £8 per month paid by Direct Debit.

From Oz to Oswestry

Michael French, a keen 20-year-old cricketer from Perth is now playing for Oswestry CC. He has been at the club since April and returns home in September, with the hope of returning next year.

Having signed as the overseas pro for season 2023, Michael is a right arm leg spin bowler and a right-hand middle order batsman. He has also been doing junior and one-on-one coaching, grounds work, marketing, and some occasional bar work to help the club back, for what they have done to get him to Oswestry.

When asked how he is finding Oswestry, Michael said, “I’m absolutely loving it! The people have been so kind and caring. All the lads that I play with are always checking up on me, inviting me out to coffee, or catching up in Birmingham or wherever, it’s just been like I’ve known everyone for a long time now.”

With a family interest in cricket,

this is a real passion for Michael. “I’ve played in so many teams back home from my school, my club, my district and even my state at some junior levels. All my cousins, my uncles, my grandparents everyone either enjoys watching or has enjoyed playing so to be bought up into it, I’m very lucky!

“We have played some very good cricket here in Oswestry and played some games now where we probably weren’t in the best position but have come off best. I think winning is toxic in good teams. Good teams know how to control games and win from positions that they shouldn’t. So, for OCC to bring back some spark into our game and become successful in this manner, is a credit to the hard work everyone at the club is putting in.”

So, take some advice from an ambitious cricketer and just join your local club. You’ll make

Welcome to The Warren

New owner and Director of The Warren, Matt, has a strong team working with him to bring a new vibe to the coffee shop and cocktail bar. You will find The Warren based in the previously named Liar Liar coffee shop, on the Bailey Head.

Introducing the team, Matt said, “I have a diverse team at The Warren. My sister, Jem, runs the kitchen along with Sam, Danielle, Elliot and Nia. Nicola runs the coffee and daytime side along with Lois, Elliot and Erin. Jamie and his team of Saf and Eloise run the evening drinks. We have all worked together for about two years now and I’m very proud of how far my team has come. We now have two apprentices too.

“It was already an incredible business that Tom and Jess had created, and our aim is to maintain that business but grow the food and hopefully evening trade. I have a real passion for local producers and premium products. I believe with the recent trend of bars such as Knock & Snitch, Bar 56 and Twisted Taste, there is opportunity for a more relaxed environment to spend time with friends and family. The name of the premises has come from the various rooms around the building - you could easily get lost! When I was walking around during the early days I kept thinking, it’s like a warren.”

The Warren is aimed at catering for everyone - to be a community space where you can either listen to music in the “Flower Room”, relax with a book in the “Alice Room”, or play pool, foosball, or board games in the “Joker Poker” room. Due to the haphazard layout of the various rooms and curious feeling that brings, Matt is using the Alice in Wonderland theme throughout, especially reflected in the cocktails and menus.

Where possible, Matt has made it a priority for ingredients to be sourced from local suppliers: Niche and Smiths bakery for breads, Clun Farm for eggs, Bills Bees from Llanymynech for honey, spirits from Henstone, wines from Momentum Wines, fruit and veg from A.C. Edwards in Oswestry market and their meat is from Eric Roberts Butchers.

“I aim to get even more things locally which I am constantly reviewing, but still want to keep our

pricing reasonable in these difficult economic times,” Matt said.

“I want to work in collaboration with other local businesses and hope to create a real cocktail trail around Oswestry. We are also looking at various events as that is our background to not only benefit The Warren but also the businesses around us.”

Get your independence back with a stairlift

Shire Stairlifts Ltd is an independent, local authority approved, family run stairlift company based in Shropshire. They have been running for 18 years with owner Marc having been working in the stairlift industry himself for 27 years. Son Jamie also joined the business and is thoroughly enjoying his work and meeting the clients.

They recently moved to premises in Shrewsbury and this has seen an increase in business for them.

Marc said, “We felt we needed to be more central within Shropshire with having a growing customer base around here and it has been a successful move. We are unique in that we deal with stairlifts exclusively. We work with trusted suppliers to supply, service and install stairlifts to the highest standards. Even if you think a stairlift isn’t possible on your stairs, give us a call because there are not many staircases that we can’t install on. We use a digital measuring system that provides us with technical

drawings so the fit is exact and you can see how the stairlift will sit on your staircase.”

Their new straight stairlifts are the Handicare

1100 - a lovely slim fitting, clean rail system meaning no oil or grease involved. The curved products come from Otolift who have recently brought out the Otolift Air Smart which has all the latest technology and an ultra-thin rail system. Both the straight and curved have a power swivel seat and folding foot tray options, and both come with 2 year warranties for peace of mind.

So, if you’re finding the stairs difficult and want to stay in the home you love, don’t struggle, contact Shire Stairlifts who will be happy to help and advise.

Do you hiccup? Or do you hiccough? If you are British, it should really be the latter: the word derives from the sound “hic” and the fact it is a bit like a cough – hic-cough. For once it was not the Greeks or the Romans! All of us do it – our diaphragms go into spasm sometimes for no good reason, often after cold, carbonated drinks or large meals or as a reaction to stress or excitement. It is quite a normal condition if it is infrequent and certainly lasts less than 48hrs.

This brings me to Charles Osborne – he hiccupped (he was American so we can use their version of the word) for 68 years. They reckon he hiccupped 430 million times! He tried every remedy you can think of and all sorts of treatments - none worked. I was always told he was finally cured by a prayer to St Jude. He is the patron saint of lost causes!

Hiccoughs seem to attract an amazing set of old wives’ tales and treatment suggestions. In the Middleages it was thought to be caused by elves and you could be exorcised. Most of us will have heard the suggestions of a quick fright, a block of ice down your back, drinking out of the far side of a cup or holding you breath and

The NHS website has a few treatment suggestions: re-breathing from a paper bag, pulling your knees up to your chest and leaning forwards, sipping ice cold water, swallowing some granulated sugar, and then holding your breath idea.

Hiccoughs can be serious: they can indicate illness and most commonly oesophageal or gullet problems like reflux. Less commonly they are a feature of kidney failure, strokes, brain tumours or pneumonia. This is rare – I never saw anyone complaining of hiccoughs, or hiccups either.

Modern discreet digital hearing instruments now have the technology to filter out background noise and bring clarity even in the busiest of environments – this is why more and more people are deciding to correct their hearing loss.

Call now to book a FREE hearing assessment and demo; we’ll even let you trial them for 60 days so you can too experience clear effortless hearing again!

HEALTH & WELLBEING Herbs for the bath

We have a long history of preferring baths, rather than the shower. This may be changing now for many reasons, including speed, convenience, mobility, sustainability or simply personal preference. However, there are plenty of people who still prefer to indulge in a good long soak in the tub and here are some suggestions on what goodies to add to the bath that you may not have considered…

Fresh herbs from the garden are readily available and oh so lovely!

Pick a good bunch of Scented Geranium leaves and stems and either put them straight in or tie them to the tap while the bath is filling. Apart from the aroma being absolutely amazing, this plant has relaxing effects and is calming on inflamed skin (as long as you’re not allergic). The same thing can be done with Roman Chamomile, which also has a glorious smell and a known calming effect on the nerves and skin. A less well used herb is ordinary garden mint or Spearmint (not to be confused with Peppermint, which is much stronger). The aromatic steam that comes from this herb in the bath is wonderful. Be lavish with it, as it’s very uplifting and soothing. Any of these three can be combined with each

other and also stored in the freezer, so that you can have an aromatic bath in the winter when your nerves need soothing.

Rosemary is fresh, uplifting and brightening. It can also be used straight from the garden any time of year. Known to stimulate poor circulation and lift the mood, this is a good one to add to a morning bath. The same can be said of fresh pine needles straight from the tree. Pine needles are useful for that great fresh scent but are also used for muscle aches and sprains and would combine well with Epsom salts for this purpose.

Walnut leaves are wonderfully aromatic and can be added to a bath. They are uplifting and have antiseptic properties.

Enjoy!

How can Custom Orthotics

Orthotics or Insoles as they are sometime referred to, are inserts placed into the base of a shoe to help reduce the stress on joints. Many shoe manufacturers produce flat unsupportive shoes that don’t aid or support our joints. Whilst NHS England is rightly recommending that we should be aiming to achieve 10,000 steps per day, for some feet, knees, hips and spines this isn’t comfortable.

Shoe manufacturers have made a range of changes to shoes in the last few years designing ‘supportive’ ‘stabilising’ ‘pronating’ footwear. Although these may suit some people, because they are still a generic shoe, we often find patients aren’t getting the support they think they are. Ultimately, although the shoe may be better than a neutral shoe, it’s not enough to correct their specific problem.

The difficulty with feet is there are no pair the same, we do stock a basic off the shelf insole, but we find much more successful results with custom made pairs. For many of our clients we find that they once wore insoles, then just one day stopped wearing them. This is a common theme, they often come to our clinic with knee or back pain, and we trace this

help me?

back down to their feet. So how do they help? Each person will be helped in a slightly different way; however, here are four points which will relate to many readers.

1.   Improved Body Alignment: Custom orthotic insoles can help align your feet, ankles, and lower limbs, which in turn promotes better overall body alignment. By providing proper support and correcting biomechanical imbalances, they can help reduce stress and strain on the lower back.

2.   Enhanced Shock Absorption: Orthotic insoles offer cushioning and shock absorption properties, which can help absorb the impact forces that occur during walking or running. By reducing the impact on your feet and lower body, orthotics can indirectly minimize the jarring forces that can contribute to back pain.

3.   Reduced Overpronation or Supination: Excessive pronation (inward rolling of the feet) or supination (outward rolling of the feet) can disrupt the natural alignment of your body and place stress on the lower back. Custom orthotics can be designed

to address these specific issues, helping to stabilize the feet and reduce the associated strain on the back.

4.   Improved Foot Arch Support: If you have flat feet or high arches, it can impact the way your feet absorb shock and distribute weight. Custom orthotic insoles can provide the necessary arch support, helping to improve foot function and subsequently reducing the strain on the lower back.

When assessing patients, often what we hear the most is patients are surprised at the level of detail we use to decide exactly what they need. Assessing all your joints and articulations of the foot and lower limb is vitally important to achieving a successful outcome with orthotics.

What remains important for us is that you receive an orthotic that is robust, long lasting and fits in every shoe. Orthotics often prevent and relieve discomfort by correcting biomechanical discrepancies.

For a full assessment, we charge £45. If you think that you may require orthotics, please get in touch on 01952 825042 or info@shropshirephysiotherapy.co.uk  We have more information on our website  www.shropshirephysiotherapy.co.uk

Are you Self Employed? Will you be paying more tax?

From 6 April 2024, HMRC are changing the way income tax is calculated, replacing the “current year basis” with the “tax year basis”.

In short, if you are a business (either selfemployed or a partner in a partnership) and draw your accounts up to a date which does not coincide with the tax year these new rules are likely to impact you and could result in you paying more tax.

A fundamental shake up of the rules dictating when profits are subject to income tax will mean any businesses not operating with a year end of 31 March or 5 April will face ongoing administrative burdens and complexities. This includes, in some cases, providing HMRC with provisional figures and having to refile tax returns at a later date.

The current 2023/24 is the “transitional year” where these new rules are being phased in. Due to how the rules work some businesses will see a temporary and unwanted increase in their tax liability.

For example, if your business operates a 31 December 2023 year end you will be taxed on

profits to 31 December 2023 but also profits from 1 January 2024 to 5 April 2024 on your 2023/24 Self-Assessment Tax Return. This means you will be taxed on more than 12 months’ worth of profits.

It is not all bad news, however. There are planning measures which can be carried out now that will alleviate and spread the additional tax burdens such as changing your year end. With the rollout of making tax digital (MTD) for income tax self-assessment (ITSA) from 2026 getting your affairs in order now will pay dividends.

It is important to speak with an accountant or advisor if you believe you may be impacted by these changes. Taxpayers operating through partnerships or those with historical overlap profits are at the most risk of facing problematic issues with the new reform.

three new solicitors

Preparing a will is one of the most important things you can do to protect your family’s future and yet many of us put it off - sometimes until it’s too late.

Lanyon Bowdler in Oswestry has expanded its private client team, which specialises in helping people put their affairs in order, welcoming three new solicitors to the firm in recent months.

Angharad Hird, Mai Lewis and Karl Beckett have joined the team to meet a growing demand for legal services, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the firm.

Kevin Thomas, partner at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Oswestry, said, “Our Oswestry office has been really busy, with an ever-growing client list, so we are delighted to strengthen our team with such highly respected solicitors.

“Angharad, Mai and Karl have worked in the private client field for a number of years and add to our capacity to help clients with the preparation of Wills, provide advice on inheritance tax, prepare and register Lasting Powers of Attorney, and assist with estate planning and administration.”

Angharad added, “It’s really important to have the right legal documents in place, such as a Will and Lasting Power of Attorney - whether you run a business or not - to ensure your wishes are carried out.

“I am really pleased to have joined the private client team in Oswestry and am looking forward to continuing

to help clients plan for their future.”

Mai comes from a farming background and graduated from the University of Sheffield with a history degree before completing the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course and Masters at the University of Law, Chester.

She said, “I know from experience that preparing for the future is particularly important for farming families, and I am very happy to help clients avoid stress and heartache further down the line.

“The administration and ownership of a farm and its land can be complicated, so ensuring that everyone’s will is up to date, as well as preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney, is vital to enable the business to function even if someone loses mental capacity for any reason.”

Recognising financial anxiety and 4 ways to cope

We’re still in a time where everyday costs are continuing to rise around us and it’s increasingly difficult to keep on top of. These continued additional costs could lead to financial stress and it’s essential to notice how it may impact your mental health. A great way to start is being able to recognise the symptoms of financial anxiety.

Here are some of the most common indicators that you may be experiencing financial anxiety…

Overspending: Shopping provides a temporary relief from money anxieties, which then becomes a vicious cycle.

Hoarding: Comfort in material items to relieve the anxiety from money challenges.

Fear of spending: Obsessive saving could prevent you from doing things that you enjoy.

Out of control finances: Difficulty in budgeting or prioritising household spending.

Depression: Feeling depressed can stem from financial anxiety.

Whatever your circumstances, there are ways to get through these tough economic times, ease stress and anxiety, and regain control of your finances. So here are four ways that could help you cope with your financial stress…

Talk to someone: sharing your thoughts with another person could help ease your anxiety. They may be able to give some advice or share their own experiences.

Keep track of your finances: being aware of what is going in and out of your accounts is a start to understanding where you could make savings and how much you can afford for leisure activities after your essential payments are made.

Keep a regular routine: knowing that specific payments are going to be taken regularly and that you have enough to cover them can help you gain control – a great antidote to anxiety.

Make a plan: Set yourself small, achievable goals for those bigger payments or future life events that you would like to reach. Checking in regularly can help you keep on track and amend your path as you go. Speaking to a financial adviser or wealth management consultant could help you with where to start and putting that plan into place.

If you would like to discuss how we could help to make a financial plan for your future, please feel free to get in contact on 01978 311611 or via email paula.hurford@sjpp.co.uk for a no obligation chat.

Gardening

August in the garden

I can’t believe that we are into August already. The lack of rain and strong winds have left a lot of my plants looking scorched, but hopefully they will recover. Most of my flowers and shrubs are in containers, along with a collection of bonsai, so have needed a lot of attention. Containers give me the opportunity to cater precisely for plants specific needs. Not only can I ensure they have the correct type of soil and correct feed I can also move them around providing sun and shade and shelter when needed.

The pots do dry out quickly and need daily watering. It is very easy to plant up a pot with some good compost and then just give it a good water now and then from the hose. But it is worth stopping and thinking. Good compost has enough nutrients for about 6 weeks summer growth. Excessive watering can not only “drown” the roots of non-water loving plants but can wash out the nutrients from your container. Did you know that there are 17 essential nutrients that all plants need, including carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen? Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are needed in larger amounts than other nutrients; they are considered primary macronutrients.

Unless your garden soil is deficient, then most plants in the open ground can find their own food.

Topping up the Nitrogen levels with composted manure or commercial feed will provide them that bit extra. Container plants won’t have that inhouse supply to fall back on. Once it’s gone it’s gone, so feeding is essential. Tap water, especially here, is alkaline and will over time change the soil pH for lime-hating Rhododendrons, Camelias and Acers, so a water-butt is handy.

Around this time of the summer, I soak my hanging baskets in a large bucket of water containing a soluble feed once a week, making sure the compost gets good and damp. At the same time, I give them a rather severe hair cut as they tend to get too straggly. They soon grow back and start looking respectable again.

PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE, TODAY

DO I NEED A FINANCIAL PLAN?

Whether you’re starting a family, preparing for retirement, or transitioning careers - there are certain points in life when creating a financial plan becomes essential.

If you’re unsure where to start, here are some practical tips from Oswestry-based independent financial adviser and co-director of Belgrave Wincham, Craig Roberts:

Examine your cash flow

“Start by looking at your monthly income and expenses to understand your financial situation,” Craig explains.

CALL 01691 886554

“Be thorough with this and ask yourself questions like are there any areas you can make savings? Are you on track to afford that special holiday or that new kitchen? Do you have an emergency fund? Would your family be protected through insurance policies should something unexpected happen?

“Now is the time to work out where your money is going and, crucially, where you want it to go.”

Structure your spending

Craig continues: “Everyone’s circumstances are different, but we typically recommend using the 50/30/20 approach as a guide to managing your personal finances.

“This means that 50% of your take-home pay should go towards ‘needs’ (things like bills, mortgages and utilities), 30% towards ‘wants’ (such as clothes and going out) and 20% on savings and / or paying back any debts.”

Think about the future

“A good plan takes into account your pension(s) too,” Craig adds. “Think about how much you’re on course to accrue in your ‘pot’ and if it’ll be enough to support you in retirement.

“Similarly, look at whether your savings and investments are working hard enough for you. The financial landscape is constantly shifting, and what may have been the best way to maximise your cash a few years ago may no longer be the case today.”

For expert help getting your financial plan on track, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 to arrange a free 60-minute consultation.

Can boss get rid of me for being on long term sick?

Q: I am 62 and have been on sick leave for almost a year following a serious cancer operation. I keep hoping I will be strong enough to return to work for a few more years as I’m in a final salary pension scheme. However, a couple of work colleagues who visited me recently said they think the boss will ‘pension me off’ early as he doesn’t believe I will ever be up to doing the job again. Can he do that if I don’t want to retire?

A: Retiring someone on the grounds of ill-health is not a process recognised under Employment legislation. Further, since the abolition of the default retirement age on 6th April 2011, a dismissal based on an employee’s age now amounts to unlawful direct age discrimination unless being under a particular age is an occupational requirement.

Your employer might suggest that your longterm sick leave indicates you have become disabled and can no longer do your job. However, he would be legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments to support you in returning to work, and an Employment Tribunal would expect him to have sought medical advice to explore appropriate reasonable adjustments in the workplace to help you before deciding to terminate your employment.

In the first instance your employer should at least request a welfare meeting with you to gather further information about the reasons for your longterm absence and the treatment you have received or have planned. You would be entitled to take someone along to the meeting as an observer who could take notes. You should check the terms of your pension scheme, as often employees can receive an ill health retirement pension prior to the age when their company pension could normally be drawn.

Before making any assumptions about what your boss may or may not have in mind, you should make an appointment to see an employment lawyer and go through everything in detail.
