This Summer Music MOB (Music Matters in Oswestry and the Borderlands) was delighted to receive a large number of instruments from a school in West London which has a connection with one of the charity’s Trustees. The donation comprised flutes, clarinets, trombones, violins and a trumpet. Impressed with the charity’s work providing music to local children, the school was looking for a recipient for its surplus orchestral instruments and Music MOB has been delighted to accept them. These instruments join the many others that have been generously provided by local people and which have been put to good use by children in the area’s state schools. These new donations will be loaned to children in September as they increase their teaching capacity from 95 to 125 children and welcome two new school partners.
Sue Turner, Trustee for Education said, “As I visit most of our schools on a regular basis, I see at first hand the benefits which music teaching has on our pupils. It will be exciting to see new groups starting in September and it is only thanks to donations such as these that we are able to increase the numbers of pupils we teach. We are very grateful to the school for this wonderful donation and to all the other generous donors and we will keep them informed about how the instruments are being used.”
As Music MOB prepares to move into a new academic year of music teaching it also looks forward to offering an Orchestra Day to be held at the Marches School in October, when young musicians will learn two pieces prepared especially for them to play together at the end of the session.

The Oswestry Christmas Parade, which will be held on Saturday 2 December, is already in the planning stage and if you want to be a part of this festive, fiesta of fun, start thinking about your entry now.
Jonathan Jones, who has organised the parade on behalf of Borderland Rotary Club, and with the help of Oswestry Town Council for over a decade said, “Yes, it’s nice to get surprises at Christmas but when you are part of a team organising one of the biggest yuletide community events in Shropshire, surprises are the last thing you want. That’s why I’d like to hear from any groups, schools, clubs, or businesses that want to be involved as soon as possible so we can get the ball rolling – and I promise I won’t use the word Christmas again until much nearer the time!”
So, get your thinking caps on and get in touch with Jonathan Jones to book your place in what we hope will be, another fun filled day of joy at a very special time of year. You can contact Jonathan on jonathanmjones5@ gmail.com
Oswestry-based community charity, Qube are celebrating the success of their ‘Wheelchairs Wanted’ campaign. In a bid to reuse rather than buy new, Qube recently used its social media channels as a place to kick off their ‘Wheelchairs Wanted’ campaign.

A beautiful calendar for 2024 is set to raise much needed funds for Hope House and Ty Gobaith this Christmas, thanks to the generosity of a talented Oswestry photographer and local businesses.
Graham Mitchell who is the Oswestry Life magazine photographer, has chosen 12 of his stunning scenes in and around Oswestry for the high-quality calendar. The calendar is available to purchase now, making it an ideal Christmas present for family and friends, both here and abroad.
With the help of loyal Oswestry Life advertisers who have covered the printing costs, it has enabled every penny of the £5 cover price to go directly in helping local children and their families who depend on vital care from Hope House and Ty Gobaith.
Joint Managing Director, David Lee-Birch of DTS Media Limited said, “We are very privileged to have such a prestigious local photographer, Graham Mitchell working alongside our brand, supporting the Oswestry Life magazine both in print and daily on our social media channels, therefore we will once again be showcasing Grahams photographs, capturing the beauty we have on our doorstep within our fantastic glossy 2024 calendar. All proceeds from the sale will go direct to Hope House.
“We would like to thank our loyal advertisers who have once again sponsored the printing, Graham Mitchell for allowing us to produce these fabulous photographs, and Paul Seager of Paul Seager Creative Design for volunteering his time and expertise in making this exciting project possible.”

A family-owned Shropshire firm has embarked on a new chapter with the addition of the sixth generation to the team. Tudor Griffiths Group, which has its head office in Ellesmere, employs over 300 people, trading out of 30 different locations. And now, Managing Director Tudor Griffiths’ sons Harry and Oliver have become the sixth generation of the family to join the firm.
Tudor said, “It’s wonderful to see the legacy of our company strengthened by Harry and Oliver joining the family company.
“Welcoming them into the business marks an important milestone. Their fresh ideas will be essential as we stride forward, and their involvement ensures a seamless transition from one generation to the next.”
Tudor said the Tudor Griffiths Group story began in 1874, when William Griffiths – at the age of 25 – turned his vision into a reality by establishing himself as a builder in Kinnerley, near Oswestry.
“From humble beginnings, the company rapidly expanded taking on initial building projects like the United Reformed Chapel at Dovaston, and the Baptist Chapel in Newtown.
“And now today, the Tudor Griffiths Group, which is still under family ownership and management after almost
150 years, continues to thrive and we are looking forward to a busy and productive future.”
Tudor Griffiths Group is made up of several divisions, including eight builders’ merchants in Ellesmere, Oswestry, Northwich, Nantwich, Tattenhall, Welshpool, Wolverley, and Bridgnorth.
It also has 14 ready-mixed concrete plants, three sand and gravel quarries, a sea-dredged sand operation, as well as renewable energy initiatives, recycling services, and skip hire, and operates across Shropshire, Cheshire, Worcestershire, and mid and north Wales.

Summer hasn‘t brought a lot of sunshine, however Oswestry has seen a bumper number of events. I’ve attended many and am pleasantly surprised at how many people came out braving all weathers. Alongside the free events in Cae Glas Park and the market, we’ve had the ‘Summer of Art’. This brought a host of events for all ages including creative writing and theatre as well as visual arts. The Art-e-fact project involved four local artists using artwork to tell the stories of Oswestry, culminating in an exhibition at the cross market building in September. The Willow Gallery hosted a textile exhibition that’s huge popularity attracted visitors from far and wide including overseas. It’s easy to miss these gems when in the habit of visiting the same few places in town.
I’ve hosted a couple of ‘Meet the Mayor’ stalls to hear people’s views and issues and will be doing more. Visitors have come to talk to me more than residents (they are in a more relaxed mood). It’s shifted my view of Oswestry as a tourist destination. Many were staying in Shropshire or over the border in Wales for a rural break and chose Oswestry as a place to visit for a day out. They were all very positive and some regularly visit during the summer as they’ve developed a fondness for the town.
“Great professional service provided with added bonus of been at your own home. Fairly priced. Highly recommended”

“Brilliant service, highly professional, would definitely recommend! Thank you so much”

I recently decided to spend a day in the town as if I was a tourist. I started in our stunning park, walked all of our alleys and less prominent streets looking up at buildings and artwork on the way and found several interesting shops that I hadn’t visited before. I popped into the Qube Gallery and had coffee and lunch in a couple of different cafes from my usual and bought some advance birthday presents. It really is a lovely town and I would recommend trying a trip round as a ‘visitor’.

Please look out for the various engagement events the Town Council is organising on themes important to our community - we would love to have your input.
The Aico headquarters in Oswestry has recently welcomed 40 Year 5 and 6 students at their Summer Club; an initiative formed by Aico in the Community alongside the Shropshire Youth Association (SYA). SYA are a registered charity that helps youth clubs in Shropshire to get set up and keep going. The charity’s focus is to make sure these clubs can give the best opportunity and experiences to youth and provide the suitable provisions needed.
Aico regularly welcomes school groups to their headquarters for a day of educational activities. With the popularity of school visits, Aico expanded by collaborating with SYA to offer a Summer Club week in August 2023. The week aimed to encourage the educational development of future generations and alleviate the pressure families may face during the summer break. The Summer Club was led by experienced and qualified leaders from SYA and supported by Aico colleagues across departments, who are fully safeguard trained and DBS checked.
The Summer Club ran from Monday to Friday and included activities such as sumo football, nerf wars, pyrography and crêpe making. The group also participated in tag archery, unihok and a music workshop. The music workshop brought the children together in Aico’s auditorium where they experimented with ukeleles, samba drums and various other instruments. The group also visited Aico’s chicken coop, where they helped feed
the chickens and collect the eggs.
On Friday morning, the children arrived at Oswestry Leisure Centre for the choice of a roller disco or inflatable aqua challenge. This was a fantastic activity and the group then departed to arrive back at Aico’s headquarters for a silent disco and just dance games. To end the day, the children were given goodie bags and certificates for completing the Summer Club.
Jess Williams one of the Youth Workers from SYA commented on the week, “SYA have had a fantastic time working with Aico this week. It has enabled us to give the young people of Oswestry and surrounding areas a chance to take part in activities and socialise with groups they may not normally be able to. It would be wonderful if more corporations could offer this opportunity to their local community and support young people’s development. Thank you again to Aico for providing a great venue and supportive volunteer team.”
The activity schedule was designed to encourage creativity, teamwork, and personal development within the group. The week also saw the children making new friends as the group was made up of people from a variety of schools.
Jane Pritchard, Community Liaison at Aico added, “We are delighted to have partnered with SYA to offer a Summer Club for children in Oswestry and the surrounding area. The children all said how much they
enjoyed the week. We are grateful to all of our volunteers and to SYA, who helped to make the week a great success.”
Aico are proud to have brought smiles to the children in attendance and are hopeful that they have enjoyed their week at the Summer Club, learning new skills.

Salon XV has now been a firm fixture on Beatrice Street in Oswestry for over a year, and owners Sam and Martyn Lewis-Evans are having a blast treating their clients to the best in hair treatments and customer service.
Having both been in the industry for over 20 years and having worked for some of the top hair franchises in the country, they never tire of talking hair.
Recently, the already award-winning hair salon (Best Hair Salon in Shropshire - England Business Awards 2023), has been featured in and been given 5 black stars by the highly respected Good Salon Guide. What does this mean? Well, it’s fantastic news for Sam and Martyn and it gives Salon XV the seal of approval from an established collective that has the public’s interest at heart.
Sam said of the recent award and recognition they have received during 2023, “We are so happy and grateful for the award - we were nominated anonymously so it was such a surprise at the time. Being included in the Good Salon Guide too in the same year is amazing.
“It’s been a nod to our hard work and the time we take to keep up to date with all the latest techniques and industry knowledge. But it also gives confidence to our existing and new clients, that they are in good hands when it comes to their treatments.”
So, what have the duo got lined up for us this season? Sam gives us some expert advice about how to care for our hair as the winter creeps in.
“Using hair products with added oils is going to really nourish your hair from root to tip. Hydration is the key during the Autumn and into winter because we’re constantly moving from warm to cold atmospheres, which causes loss of moisture. Over time, this also encourages hair breakage, so priming the hair when you’re styling at the start of your day with help prevent this.
“The Sebastian Professional Dark Oil products in our salon help tackle these issues. We’ve just launched a Christmas package (can we mention Christmas!) which includes the cleansing shampoo and conditioner, for a special price in salon.
give it the shiny, healthy look.”
Wella Master Colour Experts, Martyn and Sam are always on hand for consultations and with their past training and specialisations, they don’t miss a trick. With shared experience at director and managerial level, this means they are now building a stable brand and business that will continue to contribute to the growing community of boutique businesses in Oswestry.
With the Christmas party season closing in, maybe you’re thinking of planning a blow dry on event day. Salon XV delivers the best in blowouts with a menu styled for the latest trends and looks by stylist Saffron. Now you can walk out feeling confident your hair is beautiful.
To book an appointment, visit salonxv.bookinbeautiful.com, call 01691 753583 or drop in the salon.

Back in 2020, Vet Rob Tulloch opened The Market Town Vets with four members of staff. Over the following year, the business grew despite the lockdown crisis because Oswestry liked what they had to offer.
Based just off Church Street, the affordable, friendly and independent vet practice strives hard every day to live up to these ideals and provide the service that people want for their beloved pets.
Rob and his team offer all aspects of general practice: routine vaccinations, health checks, health plans, routine operations, preventative medicines and all at very competitive prices.
the upstairs floor with further operating, prep area, kennels and office space,” Rob explained.
It wasn’t long into the Oswestry practice’s journey before they expanded into Shrewsbury in 2021, opening an office in Sutton Park. “We were able to take on more vets, nurses and support staff, which was fantastic and in the next month or two, we will have both the Oswestry and Shrewsbury sites employing 29 staff.
“To make sure we can provide the best veterinary services for our clients, we will have a total of six vets, four RVNS, four Student nurses, two VCA’s, eight admin roles and several other support staff. Our priority is providing the best care we possibly can.
“We are now looking for further vets and nurses to help with the increasing workload at our Shrewsbury branch.”

Classical musician and performer Samantha Lewis is born and bred in Oswestry and talks to us about her career as a Mezzo Soprano and how she is helping students achieve their performance dreams in singing.
Samantha specialises in classical singing, particularly opera and has performed many roles across the country and abroad. She completed her studies at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on their Masters of Vocal Performance Course and Advanced Postgraduate diploma, finishing with distinction.
Samantha took us through how she works with her students and why she loves singing so much. “My specialism is solo opera which has been more so over the last six years. I do teach a variety of styles though and by teaching classical technique, this encourages students to learn how to use the voice safely.
“I have sung all my life; a chorister since I was seven at St. Oswalds in Oswestry but even before that with my nan and my aunty. I am 28 now, so, a long time! My nan won all of the Eisteddfods and competitions with her wonderful voice (I was lucky enough to get through to the Semi-finals of the Pendine International voice of the Future at the Llangollen’s International Eisteddfod this year).
“Nan passed her talent for singing down to my dad who is a rock musician. I fondly remember the Friday nights when I was little, falling asleep in the music room to dad and his band practicing and being taken to all the late-night gigs. So, I have always been surrounded with music, although a different genre.”
It seems working in music is what Samantha was destined to do! “Music is more than a job for me, or a
hobby for someone else - it is a way of life. We learn a lot about ourselves through music; it grows confidence, and it helps people become at peace with who they really are.”
And that is why she does what she does. Samantha has been working as a private vocal teacher since 2018. Teaching students the skills of how to sing healthily, alongside the discipline required for opera, ultimately helps them to pursue their own dreams in their chosen genre. The industry paves a hard road but by setting realistic goals, Samantha says you will get to where you want to be. Showing up and being dedicated to creating sound is how you will get there - achieving your truly unique voice!
Giving advice to anyone wanting a career as a classical singer Samantha said, “You cannot have the dream without the practice and even then, there is a lot of rejection which can be disheartening. But hang in there, trust me, it will be worth it when you start to see progress. All you need is that one yes to shine and prove yourself.”
Samantha also sings at a lot of private events such as oratorios, weddings, funerals and charity functions. This is also other work that provides income as a professional performer. However, most of her time is spent performing in Opera productions and recitals, which usually takes place over a period of time on a contract. So, there are so many ways you can build your career as a classical singer.

Oswestry Recorded Music Society will start its new season with a landmark in its 65-year history. For the first time, a composer will present recordings of his own compositions.
Martin Bussey is well known to local audiences as the Musical Director of Cantiones and the Chester Bach Singers, and Director of the Ludlow English Song.
He was choral tutor at Cheethams School of Music having been a Choral Scholar at Kings College Cambridge and studied at the Royal Northern School of Music. His compositions include works reflecting Shropshire’s character.
Martin will present to the Society on 5 October, between 2 and 4pm at Qube. Visitors will be welcome and are asked to book through Rowanthorn – the proceeds will go to Cantiones to help fund a major concert in 2024.
Oswestry Recorded Music Society meets fortnightly on Thursday afternoons. At the meeting they welcome a presentation, usually by one of the members, of their choice of recorded music.
Because there is a huge range of the classical repertoire this means that members will often be introduced to works outside their normal range of listening, with an explanation of the origin and notable features of the work or its performers.
Occasionally, the works will be presented with video. If you would like to give them a try, they shall be meeting at Qube, in comfortable surroundings, with a break for tea and a chat, on 5 October, between 2pm and 4pm.
If you decide to join them, they will eventually ask for a subscription, which at present is £30 a year. For more information, ring the Secretary, David Ward, on 01691 682485. Or visit the website oswestryconnects. org/organisation/oswestry-recorded-music-society
When the annual family get-together commences, humour, mischief, a twinge of jealousy, an abundance of mayhem and healthy doses of pure joy ensue in this colourful and comical children’s book.
From author and lifelong educator Kay Jones and award-winning illustrator Peter Trimarco, The Cousins Are Coming uses lyrical rhyme and playful illustrations to capture the chaos, the comedy and above all, the camaraderie that arises when young cousins have a chance to gather under one roof.
With energy and imagination to spare, the children move seamlessly from one technology-free moment to the next, with a spirited game of hide and seek, some unauthorized spying on the parents and plenty of laughs at the adults’ expense — all of which is witnessed by whimsical animal sidekicks.
Perfect for children ages 3-9. Available from Amazon.
I’ve friends who fly to Spain to seek the sun, To lie on beaches or beside a pool, I’ve others who think Disneyland is fun, That Rome is chic, that New York shopping’s cool. I’ve friends who go in search of strange delights, The mysteries of the Nile or Timbuctoo, I’ve those who say they travel for the sights And some who think it’s just the thing to do.
I’ve friends in search of wisdom, inner peace, And friends afraid to say they have not been, And those who think their street-cred will increase With each new destination they have seen.
All travel’s fine, I’m sure, and yet for me There’s life enough right here in Oswestry.

Prepare for a multi-period of historical activity on the grounds of Whittington Castle! On 7-8 October, the castle invites you to a weekend of re-enactment, tall tales and historic traders. This is your opportunity to hold a conversation with one of the historical re-enactors in full character, whilst sampling a cup of meade.
Covering a period of 1000 years, the jam-packed weekend will cover the Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Late Medieval, Victorians and WWII. All important periods of our British history.
So, who will you meet from these periods? The fearsome Roman Legions will be walking around talking to visitors, in full military dress. We don’t know what exactly was on the site during the Roman era, but there has always been something there since the Iron Age.
Moving to Saxon times, there is evidence of a settlement close by to the site of the castle. This was the early-medieval period and covers six centuries. You may also know these soldiers as Anglo-Saxons and they are distinguished by their head-shaped helmets, round shields and long spears.
Are you brave enough to approach a Viking? If you fancy meeting a burly Viking, this will be your chance. The Viking Age crosses over the Saxon period which was why there would have been clashes between the two groups.
The Normans and Late Medieval Knights are probably the most recognised when it comes to Whittington Castle. This is the era in which the first castle at Whittington dates from 1090-1100. We know of the Norman boundary with Wales, which was on the Whittington side of Offa’s Dyke. Cue a lot of tension between the English and Welsh and the fight for hold of the Castle.
Excitingly, there will be Victorian Riflemen present and in past re-enactments they have fired a canon! Finally, you will
meet WWII soldiers dressed in their authentic uniforms.
Throughout the weekend, there will be fighting, firearms displays and living history for you to experience. And as a history lover, you’ll be pleased to hear some of the actors will be re-living specific events in history relevant to their characters. Don’t forget to have your photo taken with the historical actors.
You can walk the beautiful grounds, have a coffee from kitchen@thecastle and feed the ducks on the moat. If you’re lucky you might win something on the tombola to take home.
Castle Manager, Kimberley said, “Fundraising is crucial to the Preservation Trust to keep our Castle open to the public. We are really happy to open the site to groups and societies wanting to host events here. Not everybody has a Castle at their disposal to ‘play dress up’ in. We love welcoming re-enactment groups from all time periods, without restricting ourselves to medieval fighting knights. This year we welcomed Napoleonic groups and American Civil War enthusiasts, neither of which have any historic links to the Castle, but it’s a great opportunity for something different. The multi-period is my favourite event in the calendar. How often do you get to see an Roman centurion chatting with a WW2 airman!”
Entry will be free across the weekend with a small charge of £2 for parking. For more information visit whittingtoncastle.co.uk or Facebook @Official Whittington Castle.
This hearty recipe makes a tasty sharing dish. The textures are fantastic, and the dish has plenty of spicy Tex-Mex flair
Serves 4
Preparation time 15-20 minutes
Cooking time 25-30 minutes
Ingredients
• 450g chorizo sausage
• ½ white onion, peeled and chopped
• 5 eggs, beaten
• 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
• 2 jarred jalapeño peppers, sliced
• 225g pre-packaged ‘Mexican blend’ grated cheese or a mixture of freshly grated mature Cheddar, mild Cheddar and Gouda/Monterey Jack
• 125ml sour cream
For the tortilla chips
• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 packet soft flour or corn tortillas, as preferred
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / fan 160°C / gas mark 4. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
2. First make the tortilla chips. Using a pastry brush, paint a very light coating of vegetable oil on one side of each tortilla. Stack the tortillas, greased-side up, in an even pile. Divide the stack in two and cut the tortillas into quarters and then into eighths. Separate the chips and arrange them oiled-side up on the prepared baking sheet.
3. Bake the chips in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until they are crisp and just beginning to brown slightly. Remove them from the oven, but you can leave the oven on if you are ready to make up the frying pan.
4. Cook the chorizo in the frying pan for about 5 minutes over a medium heat until crumbled and evenly browned. Drain and set aside. Cook the onion in the same pan until soft, then stir in the eggs and scramble with the onion. Mix in the tomatoes and continue to cook and stir until the eggs are nearly set. Remove from the heat.
5. Spread a layer of tortilla chips into a medium castiron (or ovenproof) frying pan. Scatter the chorizo and the scrambled egg mixture over the chips, top with jalapeño slices and cover with the grated cheese.

Being a foster carer is a challenge, not only because of the complexities that a foster child may present but also because it changes the dynamics in the family home, especially if you already have children of your own.

Welcome to the wonderful world of comics. That’s the first impression joint owners and husband and wife team, Glenn and Kate, like to give you when entering their comic shop ‘Time Invaders’. Formerly known as House Of Jumble and The Comic Vault, which relocated from Shrewsbury to a much bigger shop in Oswestry’s popular town centre in 2020, after accidentally getting into selling comics when Kate was ill off work.
Glenn, a comic collector himself, started selling comics in their shop and they’ve never looked back. After

experiencing four exciting years of growth, the couple want to continue passing on their knowledge, passion for comics and annuals to the public in an amazing traditional family run shop. “We’ve noticed our shop has a wonderful way of lighting up customers faces, even through these hard times, when they enter seeing memorabilia from their childhood on the walls,” Glenn said.
Keen collectors, historians and
archaeologists of comics, they not only buy and sell old and modern comics and annuals but restore and research stock. Recycling these back to the customers, instead of ending up at the recycling centre, lost forever. Particularly helping those keen to complete their collections - selling back issues, full stories, graphic novels and yearly annuals, which have become a particularly popular present for special birthdays 30, 40 and 50. It’s wonderful to see collectors’ eyes light up and big smiles all round as they find that all important missing back issue, which is more than enough reward for Glenn and Kate, seeing satisfied customers giving the comics and annuals good homes.
And like most businesses these days, they have also managed to adapt to an ever-changing world by introducing new collectable ranges. These include collectable figurines, Funkpops, Sci-Fi books and models. They’ve even opened a much-requested Retro Arcade, filled with Arcade machines playing over 600 games including Pacman, Space Invaders, and Street Fighter. They take regular bookings for Retro Arcade Birthday Parties provided with free Banners and Balloons.
Working with the local community in mind, Glenn and Kate have donated to local schools for the libraries to help with picture word association and some home comic
and annual deliveries for the disabled and elderly after visits to the shop.
Next year’s shop plans are already in progress with the introduction of public illustration, art and comic writing workshops for all ages. Events to include Caricature drawing and demonstrating and possibly comic book signings.
The shop is open all week except Tuesdays 10am-5pm. You’ll always find a warm welcome and dog friendly treats.

The new headteacher of a Shropshire school has pledged to drive forward academic success whilst being respectful of school traditions as he welcomed back pupils for the first official day of term.
Toby Spence has taken on the role at Wrekin College in Wellington which celebrated an outstanding set of exam results this summer.
Moving to Wrekin from his post as head of Sibford School in Oxfordshire, Mr Spence’s teaching career spans both state and independent sector schools. His first headship was at a leading co-educational, international day and boarding school in Kenya.
During seven years at Sibford he was responsible for developing a highly-respected value added programme and embedding outstanding pastoral care.
“When it comes to education and doing the very best we can for each pupil in our care I am committed to leading a value-added programme that continually improves the academic outcomes for youngsters,” added Mr Spence.
“We know children all learn at a different pace and in different ways. Impactful teaching and learning is at the heart of an education that understands where a pupil starts from and how far they can go. Being focused and strategic in how we assess various skills and abilities and how we challenge them enables pupils to make progress and reassures parents that we know what we are supporting their children to fulfill their potential.”
Mr Spence said he was excited to start the new term having arrived in Shropshire as the school picked up results which saw the number of the highest grades at GCSE increase significantly upon pre-pandemic levels.
With previous roles as Head of History at Bootham School in York and Director of Learning at Yarm School in Stockton-on-Tees, Mr Spence brings a wealth of experience in areas such as staff motivation, progressive learning and teaching techniques as well as curriculum development to Wrekin.
“I am really enjoying getting to know the community here at Wrekin and believe there is so much we can all do together to continue to build on the success the school is already enjoying. I have been very impressed with the team here and I am ambitious for the future.”

I’m Ian, Massage Therapist at Trinity Clinic. I’m qualified in general (Swedish) massage, as well as sports massage, which uses more advanced techniques to assess and treat specific problems or injuries. I’m also qualified to deliver Electrotherapy (TENS for pain, and EMS for muscle stimulation), and Ultrasound (to help with recovery from injury).
I’m able to use Osteopathic articulation for Sport and Spine, which involves moving joints gently but firmly within their normal range to improve movement. I particularly enjoy treating lower body problems involving glutes, legs, knees and feet, probably due to a lifetime of running, climbing and skiing! I also work a lot with postural shoulder problems caused by the ergonomic strain of modern day to day life. We find that Massage Therapy complements the Chiropractic treatments offered in the clinic perfectly, and many patients find it beneficial to alternate therapies to keep on top of aches and pains.

Gut health plays a pivotal role in maintaining overall well-being. The digestive system isn’t just responsible for processing food; it also houses trillions of microorganisms that form the gut microbiota, influencing digestion, immunity, and even mental health.
The gut is where the magic of digestion happens. A well-functioning gut breaks down the food we eat into nutrients that our body can absorb and utilize. If digestion is compromised due to an unhealthy gut, the body may struggle to obtain essential nutrients it needs to function optimally.
The gut is home to a substantial portion of our immune system. An imbalanced microbiome can lead to immune dysfunction, leaving the body vulnerable to infections and chronic diseases.
The gut communicates with the brain through the gutbrain axis, influencing mood and mental well-being. Gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters, therefore imbalances within the microbiome can contribute to conditions like anxiety and depression.
Chronic inflammation is at the core of many chronic diseases. A balanced gut microbiome helps manage inflammation by maintaining a diverse array of beneficial bacteria that prevent harmful inflammation.
Consume a variety of fibre-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. These provide nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria and promote a thriving gut ecosystem.
Incorporate fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi into your diet. These foods contain live beneficial bacteria that contribute to a balanced gut microbiome.
Consume prebiotic-rich foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and asparagus. Prebiotics serve as fuel for beneficial bacteria, encouraging their growth and activity.
Chronic stress can impact gut health. Engage in stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and regular exercise.
Excessive sugar and processed foods can harm gut health. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible.
In conclusion, the health of your gut ripples throughout your body, impacting digestion, immunity, mental health, and inflammation. By making mindful choices to support your gut, you support your overall physical and mental health.

It has been 30 years since I qualified as a practitioner and I have been helping people ever since. But I still meet people who don’t know what I do and, even worse, think I practice Homeopathy. It would be fair to say that Herbalists and Homeopaths treat similar conditions, but in very different ways.
Homeopathy was invented in the 1800s and it is a system of using highly diluted versions of herbs, minerals and a few animal extracts. Herbal medicine is much, much older and we use tangible extracts of herbs from all over the world. Actual roots, leaves, flowers and bark. We may use these herbs internally or externally, in the bath, as a cream, infusion, tincture, capsule, liniment, embrocation or inhalation. Herbal medicine is entirely plant based.
A herbalist treats the patient holistically; this means that we consider every aspect of them; diet, lifestyle, habits, mental and emotional health when creating a bespoke programme. Even if two people come in with the same condition, the treatment may not be exactly the same. I always set achievable goals and support people through the process at various stages. A practitioner adheres to confidentiality. These days, we have all the convenience of the 21st century, which is reassuring to any of those who work long hours and don’t make time for brewing and stewing herbs to take thrice daily.
Tinctures are ready made extracts that a herbalist blends on an individual basis and can be taken swiftly and conveniently in a small amount of water. Capsules are also an option where appropriate. The most common conditions I treat are Arthritis, Menopause, IBS and anything stress related, including sleep. A herbalist would never interfere with any medication prescribed by a doctor.
Throughout my childhood I was covered in eczema and was sent to many doctors and dermatologists, none of whom really got to the bottom of it and so skin problems are dear to my heart.
Why not try Herbal Medicine?
Louise Idoux MSc. MNIMH Member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, Oswestry Herbarium, tel 01691 656934We talk a lot about the organs in our body: heartfelt, heart-broken, heavy hearts, hale and hearty, brainy, brainstorm, brainwave…. I could go on but the list suggests we think about our hearts and brains quite a lot and rarely spare much thought – unless we are drinking alcohol – for what is arguably the most important organ of all: our livers.
I used to teach first aid and would ask people to draw the organs of the body into a human outline. It was quite an amusing lesson that taught me how little people really know about their insides. The liver is HUGE! 2% of body weight or about 1500g. It is a highly complex and very busy organ. It makes things like the proteins that allow your blood to circulate and clot, it cleans your blood of waste, it filters out some of the rubbish we eat before it gets into our main bloodstream, it stores useful things like vitamins for future use and helps our immune and digestive systems. It does this 24/7 and like our title suggests, it’s worth looking after: you only have one liver!
Amazingly for an organ this complex and crucial the liver only quite rarely causes problems. It can become

inflamed (Hepatitis) or involved with spreading cancer (liver secondaries) and perhaps the commonest cause of jaundice is gallstones but that is arguably not the liver’s fault and I’ll blame it on the gallbladder.
The commonest liver issue is called NAFLD –Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease. When we become overweight the liver stores fat and can even appear a creamy colour. It is thought about 1 in 5 of us have the milder form of this condition. Thankfully NAFLD rarely causes serious problems but can progress to cirrhosis where the liver scars and shrinks and that can be very serious. The answer to NAFLD, like the answer to a lot of health issues, is to maintain a good weight, drink less alcohol and eat a good diet.

“While we have a strong number of members who have been with the club for 10, 20 and 30 years, we have recently lost some good members who have relocated out of Shropshire, so we are looking to replenish the numbers.

In a significant move to bolster individual financial security, the government has announced the extension of the deadline for voluntary Class 3 NICs to April 2025. This extension grants eligible individuals an invaluable opportunity to fortify their state pension and enhance their retirement prospects. The decision to prolong the deadline comes as a response to the ever-increasing concern about retirement provisions in an evolving economic landscape, and aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting financial literacy and awareness.
The Class 3 NICs pertain to voluntary contributions that individuals can make to bridge any gaps in their National Insurance record. It is a vital option for those who might have missed qualifying contributions, such as self-employed individuals or those with career breaks, to maintain or improve their eligibility for certain state benefits, including the state pension. Prior to the extension, the deadline was set to close in the current tax year, prompting concerns among many who were unable to meet the original cut-off.
The decision is a welcome relief for many individuals who were unable to meet the previous deadline due to various reasons. It allows them to reassess their financial situation and make informed decisions about voluntary contributions. Whether someone is seeking to maximize their state pension entitlements or simply wants to secure a comfortable retirement, this extension offers a chance to act strategically and take control of their financial future.
By extending the deadline to April 2025, the government aims to provide ample time for individuals to seek expert advice, understand their pension entitlements, and make informed choices.
If you need advice or assistance to resolve any issues regarding national insurance please contact us at tax@dre.co.uk or by calling our office on 01691 654353 and we will be happy to help.
Christina Evans A.C.C.A.Assistant ManagerPhishing Scams are when scammers try to obtain personal data by getting you to click on links in emails, texts or Facebook ads which take you to dodgy look-alike websites. Current scams to watch out for include McAfee, BT, Netflix and diet pills.
Investment Scams involve fraudsters offering investment opportunities – using false figures and fake endorsements from celebrities. If it sounds too good to be true – it’s probably a scam – before thinking of investing your hard-earned cash – check with the FCA’s register.
Romance Scams typically begin on dating sites or apps with scammers establishing a relationship –then asking for money for made-up causes with a variety of reasons why they have no-one else to turn to. You can do a reverse image search to check a profile pic against known scammers – and cease contact immediately if someone asks you for money.
Shopping Scams get you to pay for items that you never receive – from dodgy websites, auction sites or via social media – event tickets being a prime example. Scammers often ask for payment via bank transfer or bitcoin – if you can’t pay by Paypal – be suspicious.
Vishing Scams – combine ‘voice’ and ‘phishing’ and involve scammers impersonating a company – like your bank – to obtain personal details. Callers will say your account has been compromised. Put the phone down and contact your bank directly – from the number on their website.

Oswestry law firm Lanyon Bowdler is bringing together inspiring individuals who have done just that, as part of the Thriving After Brain Injury conference.
The event is expected to attract professionals working with, and people living with, brain injury from across the country - with former captain of the England and GB hockey team, Alex Danson MBE, and GB paralympic footballer, Jack Rutter, headlining an impressive panel of speakers.
Dawn Humphries, head of the personal injury team at Lanyon Bowdler, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming a range of people, some of whom will share stories of incredible courage and resilience, with others discussing the very latest in rehabilitation and support services.
“A big thank you to all of our speakers for giving up their time to be part of this important event, and I would also like to thank our sponsors, ARAG, Frenkel Topping Group and No5 Barristers Chambers.”
Speakers will include Andrew Worthington, a consultant in neuropsychology and rehabilitation with
Headwise, Hannah Wright, a brain injury coordinator and counsellor at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, and Daniel Thomas, a qualified music therapist at Chroma.
Stephanie Webster, of Frenkel Topping Group, said: “Frenkel Topping are beyond excited to support and attend the upcoming Thriving After Brain Injury conference and to celebrate those who have not only overcome life-changing injuries but have thrived despite adversity.
“We’re looking forward to hearing stories and insights from other experts in this industry that will no doubt inspire us all.”
William Theaker, practice director at No5 Barristers’ Chambers, added: “We are thrilled to be sponsors of the Thriving After Brain Injury event with Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors. No5’s Henry Pitchers KC and Chris Bright KC join a great line-up of speakers on the day.”
Mike Knight, of ARAG, said: “We are committed to supporting and facilitating access to justice through our legal insurance services, so we are delighted to be part of an event like this which will help build understanding of the challenges injured people face.”

A life-changing injury can be devastating - but it can also inspire an incredible response as people thrive in the face of adversity.
To start, when is the right time to write your will? Realistically, it should be done as soon as possible but practically, people tend to write their will around the time of big life moments such as marriage, civil partnership, buying their first home, or having children. Other trigger events might include the death of a loved one or divorce.
So, what are the benefits of writing a will at these times in your life? We’ve summarised 6 below:
1. Keeping control - You can decide who will benefit from your estate and how your possessions are passed on. This includes whether you would like some to go to charities and organisations that are close to your heart.
2. Decreasing stress - There can be an overwhelming number of arrangements to be made alongside your loved one’s grieving process. Having a will can help reduce additional stress for those involved with dealing with the estate and is likely to help minimise arguments between family members and/or beneficiaries.
3. Planning continuation of care - Nominating a guardian for your children will ensure that they are looked after by someone that you trust rather than someone who has been decided upon by the courts. You can also specify who you would like to look after any pets.
4. Choosing how to say goodbye - If you know what kind of funeral you would like, noting this in your Will can help those involved make the decisions with your preferences in mind.
5. Tax planning - You can make plans in your Will to reduce the amount of potential inheritance tax that your beneficiaries may be liable to pay on your estate value. The amount of the estate that would be liable for inheritance tax after allowances (currently 40% in the 2023/2024 tax year) depends upon your circumstances and so you would need to seek advice on this matter.
6. Dictating your digital legacy - In an everincreasing digital world, there are so many more things we value online including photographs and password-protected documents.
In the scenario that you pass away without a Will, the beneficiaries and the distribution of your estate is decided upon by the laws of intestacy rather than your wishes. If you were married or had a civil partner, your children and grandchildren are not guaranteed to receive anything without a will. Similarly, if you are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, your partner is not automatically eligible to benefit from your estate. If you would like to know more about planning for yours and your family’s financial future, please feel free to contact me on 01978 311611, or email paula. hurford@sjpp.co.uk.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

Diners and guests at Lion Quays Waterside Resort and Spa recently spotted a famous face around the resort. Well-known TV personality Nina Wadia, best known for her appearances on shows such as Eastenders, Goodness Gracious Me, Citizen Khan and Strictly Come Dancing was in Oswestry filming a promotional video for the cuttingedge Brio Sport massage chair for Oswestry-based Furniture For Life, the leading UK massage chair supplier.
Filming took place in Lion Quays’ state-of-the-art gym, elegant spa and Waterside Restaurant, turning them into a filmset for the day. The Holroyd Community Theatre at Moreton Hall School also featured as a backdrop for one of the scenes in the video.
Furniture for Life’s Managing Director, Diane Hughes,
said, “Nina Wadia is actually the owner of a Brio Sport massage chair herself, and she really appreciates the relaxation and therapeutic benefits of the chair to help her with her busy lifestyle and filming schedule. Nina kindly agreed to become a Brand Ambassador for Furniture for Life and the Brio Sport, and her enthusiasm for the product and the benefits of its use really comes across in the video.”
She continued, “Nina was so lovely to work with. Her personality and enthusiasm really added authenticity to the filming process. The staff at Lion Quays and The Holroyd Community Theatre couldn’t have made her more welcome and we’re lucky to have such amazing venues that were so accommodating with the production team, on our doorstep.”
The video production was a truly local collaboration, being coordinated by Oswestry-based marketing company, Hunter Bevan, and filmed by Chester-based Jonny Noakes Films.

With winter just around the corner, now is the time to think about your home’s heating system. Is your boiler running safely and efficiently while keeping running costs to a minimum? Home heating can contribute up to 60% of your home’s utility bills, so it’s important to ensure you are up to date with the best practices for maintaining and operating your central heating system.
The general rule is that once your boiler reaches around twenty years of service, you should replace it with a new unit. On average, your boiler will begin to operate less efficiently after ten to fifteen years, meaning it will need to work harder to heat your home, resulting in increased utility bills. Along with the potential cost of breakdowns and repairs for older boilers, it may be financially prudent to replace your boiler before it becomes a bigger expense.
According to the plan for the UK to reach carbon net zero by 2050, the UK government has announced that newbuild homes will not be allowed to install traditional gas boilers after 2025. This doesn’t mean you have to replace your existing gas boiler by this date, but you may wish to consider these heating alternatives, which will soon be considered the norm.
Heat pumps: using a similar technology to that which operates your fridge freezer (but in reverse), heat pumps will be one of the main ways new-build homes are heated after 2025, by utilising only air and a small amount of electricity.
Infrared heating panels: by emitting infrared energy into a room, the energy is absorbed directly into solid objects within three metres of the panel, causing them to warm up instantly. The infrared cannot warm air unfortunately, so the room will feel cold the moment it’s turned off.
Biomass boilers: these work in the same way as a conventional gas boiler, but rather than gas, the fuel is a plant-based mixture of either wood, pellet or woodchip. This means it’s a much greener solution than conventional fossil fuels.
Solar thermal panels: designed to be used alongside a regular gas or biomass boiler, solar thermal panels absorb heat from the sun, which is then transferred to a water tank for you to use as a hot water supply or for heating for your home.
Rather than electric portable heaters, which are really costly to run, an efficient central heating system set to around twenty degrees is still the recommended choice, even if you plan on heating just one room of the house. By using individual thermostats or radiator valves (or a smart thermostat) in each room, you can focus the heat towards the room you need to keep cosy, avoiding having to wear gloves and a woolly hat on your Zoom calls!

Ellesmere based Princes LHS Ltd are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors. Managing Director, Matt Smith helped set up the business nearly 20 years ago after working for another local contractor for 14 years where he started as an apprentice straight from leaving school. Matt is a firm believer in the apprenticeship program and over the years Princes LHS have successfully trained a number of electrical, plumbing and heating apprentices, many of whom are still with the company to this day installing the various systems they can offer.
In 2011, Princes LHS adapted to the changes happening within the industry, and after key staff members taking some additional training to upskill became MCS (Microgeneration Certified Scheme) accredited which allows the business to certify and demonstrate that all of their renewable energy installations are carried out to recognised industry standards.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.Tesla-Powerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” (www.lowcarbonhomesystems. co.uk) as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £5,000 Grant to go towards the installation of an air source heat pump, or £6,000 towards the installation of
a ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf. An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fueled boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display - both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels. This can be achieved by using a MyEnergi “Zappi” car charger which is also on display, as well as the MyEnergi “Eddi” Immersion heater diverter which means you can also divert solar electricity to your hot water tank.
Princes LHS Ltd are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps.
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey.

Whimsigothic style mixes up elements of victoriana, gothic, steampunk and boho. By blending different furniture eras, family heirlooms, deep colours, contrasting textures and filtering light in creative ways, it seeks to create a dark but ethereal ambience. It’s perfect for Halloween decorating, but also stands the test of the seasons, making it more about a gothic aesthetic than specific holiday themed decor. Go for dark colours like burgundy, navy and blacks, and look for items with small metallic accents and esoteric imagery. Fabrics in matt finishes; feathers and velvets, help enhance that cozy cavernous feel.

You can either look upon October as the end of the gardening season, putting the garden and greenhouse to bed for the winter or you can, as I do, look at it as the start of an exciting new year. Whichever way you go, there is no time to rest.
Have a gentle walk around and take a good hard look. What worked, what didn’t? What is in the wrong place? Perhaps it is time to replace that plant that has just not performed? It will be time to think about repotting old faithfuls, but don’t worry you don’t need to do it all now. Make a list, also noting the seeds you need for next year. If you don’t, you’ll end up with far too many. You’ll be tempted by those seed-packets… I always am, especially online.
It’s time to bring in those tender plants and apply mulch around the borders to protect sensitive roots. Spent compost from the summer’s containers is an ideal mulch. If you have grown peas and beans, then cut them off at ground level. Their roots fix nitrogen and act as a
fertiliser. Dig a trench elsewhere for next year’s legumes and start to fill with manure and kitchen waste.
It really is the time for the “Big Clear Up”. Remember all those seed trays, plug trays and flowerpots discarded in the early summer? Now’s the time to do the washing up and make sure they don’t harbour disease and pests, all ready for the new year. Before it gets too cold, a good clean and disinfect of the greenhouse is on the cards.
Have a good tidy up throughout, removing straggly growth and tying in climbers in preparation for winter winds. Compost fallen leaves and keep ponds clear. Years ago, now would be the time to build a bonfire, but nowadays the council green bin collection is an easier and much more environmentally friendly option.
Enjoy the future you’re looking forward to with our expert guidance
You may have seen the recent headlines that suggest one in three adults could face tough times financially when they retire.
The research behind the story, conducted by Scottish Widows, also estimates that a further 18% are on course for a “minimum lifestyle”, with just enough to cover basics such as bills and have some money left over for non-essentials.
Craig Roberts, co-founder of Belgrave Wincham, says: “We receive enquiries from so many people who are concerned about this. The good news is that with careful planning there are ways you can improve your finances for the future.”
Here are three points to consider:
CALL
Think about your expenditure now, versus what you’ll need in retirement. You’ll most likely have paid off your mortgage, but what about bills, home improvements or new cars? Take into account any travelling you plan to do or hobbies as well. Draw up a list with an approximate cost for each outgoing.
Consider where your money will come from in your retirement. It might be a state pension, a private pension, a workplace pension or a mix of these. You may also have additional revenue streams like investments, company shares or a rental income. Look into each one and work out what income they’ll offer you.

Q: My son injured his hand due to faulty equipment at a theme park he visited with his kids. He reported it to someone there, but because he was only ‘walking wounded’ they just directed him to on-site First Aid where it was bandaged up and he was sent on his way. The problem is that he is diabetic, and the wound later became badly infected and turned to sepsis and he had to have two fingers amputated. I said I thought he should claim compensation, but he says the injury wasn’t bad enough at the time and if he wasn’t diabetic, he wouldn’t have got sepsis. Could he at least claim compensation for loss of earnings?
A: The first thing to say is that the theme park has a duty of care to users to maintain its equipment and keep them safe. Regardless of how minor your son’s injury was, if it can be proven that it was due to faulty equipment, he should be entitled to claim compensation from the theme park. The fact that he is diabetic is irrelevant – you take your victim as you find them.
Compensation awards made for personal injury claims are usually made up of two parts - general damages and special damages. General damages cover is for the pain and suffering together with the loss of being able to do things e.g. social life, sports and hobbies. Special damages are awarded to cover actual measurable financial losses and expenses incurred as a result of the person’s accident. This includes care and assistance costs, loss of earnings, travel costs getting to appointments etc.
Your son should compile a timeline of all his appointments, costs and other relevant information and make an appointment to see a local personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
