Thousands raised in Will’s memory
The family and friends of a young man who died of a brain tumour have so far raised over £36,000 for charity - and are set to raise much more this year.
Dave and Sue Roberts have paid tribute to the support they have received, and kind donations given, in memory of their son Will - affectionately known as Choc due to his love of chocolate - who passed away aged 26 in December 2022.
More than £8,000 was collected at his funeral last year and Will’s friends and family have since held a lunch and auction, a tractor run, a bonfire night and ‘Choc’s Rugby Challenge’ to raise money. Most of the donations have been handed to Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, the region’s primary cancer charity which supports those impacted by cancer throughout Shropshire and Mid Wales. The charity, which also works to spread awareness about cancer in the wider community, supported Will and his family over his six and a half years of treatment and beyond. Donations have also been handed to Brain Tumour Support and Prostate Cancer.
Dave said, “Losing a child is the worst possible thing ever, but we just felt we had such good care and we feel as if we want to put something back in. As parents you want the best for your children and we had that, we know the hospital and everyone did absolutely everything they could for Will.
“We have so much to be grateful for - from Shrewsbury to Stoke and everywhere in between - so the collection started off with the funeral donations. The support we have had from such a wide bunch of people is unbelievable, we enjoy it and it lets you give something back, it gives you the incentive to carry on.”
Dave and Sue said they never dreamed they would raise this much money and they could never have done it on their own, being supported by so many different groups of ‘wonderful people’.
He said one group which has been ‘behind us every step of the way’ is the Whittington and Oswestry Young Farmers - which Will was Chairman of for three years.
Whittington and Oswestry YFC were also the group behind the charity rugby game, a F1 themed float at last year’s Shropshire Show, dedicated to Will who was a big F1 fan, and the hugely successful illuminated tractor run through Oswestry in December.
The event raised more than £12,000 alone - £4,000 of which was collected by people shaking buckets in villages on the night.
“The tractor run will be back this year, it will continue for as long as I’m on this planet,” Dave said.
“It was brilliant, unbelievable, the turnout was mind blowing - to see all those people, every layby, every place people could stand, there were just people everywhere! Mike Lade did a fantastic job of arranging it and promoting it, it was poignant for us and to see it bring smiles to so many faces was fantastic.”
At Will’s funeral, the £8,000 raised was split between Lingen Davies and Brain Tumour Support, a charity chosen by Di Evanson, a rare tumour specialist nurse in the Oncology Department at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, and who has become a family friend since she treated Will like another son.
In total, the Roberts’ and their friends have donated £23,000 to Lingen Davies since Will’s death. Helen Knight, head of fundraising for the charity, said the fabulous amount raised was testament to how much the Roberts’ family mean to the whole community, and how much Will meant to those around him.

Coach House Fitness New Studio and Exciting Class Lineup
Coach House Fitness has recently celebrated a year of achievements. Taking over the former Wynnstay Hotel gym from the Coaching Inn Group in January 2023, they have witnessed a 150% surge in membership and recently been awarded the Oswestry Life Customer Service and Diversification Award.
The latest milestone for the club is the unveiling of a brand-new studio, created by converting the former swimming pool and spa area, carefully preserving the original charm with exposed brick, wood beams, and stable arch windows. The 150m2 space will be used to offer a diverse range of 29 weekly live and virtual classes.
Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor
Olly Rose, officially opened the studio at a launch event attended by staff, gym members and press on 1 March. She even took a moment to try out the boxing pads with instructor Liam Grasier before cutting the ribbon.
Scheduled to kick off on 4 March, classes will include Spin, Boxercise, Circuit Classes, Yoga, and Pilates. Leading the sessions will be instructors Liam, Luke Evans, and Callum Woodcock as well as owner Rad Danailov and outside yoga specialist Jess Jones. Open to both members and non-members on a convenient pay-as-you-go basis, these classes offer flexibility for all fitness enthusiasts.
As Coach House Fitness continues its journey, the new studio and expanded class offerings

MAYOR’S MINUTES
Councillor Olly Rose
My year as mayor is drawing to a close soon - it’s been busy and really interesting. I thought I knew Oswestry well but have found many events and groups that I wasn’t aware of. There are so many people running services to help others, as well as to entertain, provide activities and build a better community.
Oswestry has bloomed this year. Literally, winning the Britain in Bloom competition but also with more colourful events, courses and exhibitions. The third Love Oswestry February programme was bigger than before but there were still spaces in the excellent workshops. It’s so hard to get the word out about what’s available.
We’ve seen great improvements around the town. Church Street is looking good, shop fronts have been renovated and alleyways transformed. New areas have been planted with flowers and many streets have been resurfaced. Our central toilets are now fully welcoming to all. The smart exterior for our market hall will soon be followed by improvements to the interior, as well as a mural for the side wall. As a market town, the market is central to our identity, we are faring much better than many towns as we’re fully occupied, so do pay a visit.
The Town Council purchased the iconic Llwyn Mansions, Oswestry’s only grade 1 listed building and is rejuvenating it, and also launching a scheme to help businesses move into shops that have been vacant for more than six months.
During the year I’ve met a lot of visitors who are very positive about what Oswestry has to offer and I share their positivity, Oswestry is increasingly becoming an even better place to live. I’m looking forward to a summer where funding will enable an even fuller programme of cultural events.
Finally I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who I have met this year and to all those people playing a part in strengthening our community.

When fundraising goes to the next level
Whether you have a cause close to your heart or you are inspired by a charity to start fundraising, the efforts that go into it are epic. When you think of the hours an individual or team put into training and what their bodies go through if it’s a sporting endeavour, it’s just inspiring.
And Oswestry based Lenny Worthing knows all about supporting local charities.
Lenny has been fundraising for charities for over 20 years as well as doing some volunteering, with his last fundraiser back in October last year for Hope House. The event saw Lenny and a team of around 30 people doing a firewalk.
Lenny says, “Knowing that the heat you’re about to walk on is around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, is mind boggling! It was one of the best things I’ve organised, and we raised £8986.72. So, a big thank you all who took part.”
Connect For Life provides day care support for older people by offering a safe place where people can meet, in a welcoming environment. Carers of people suffering with memory loss or dementia are able to take a few hours respite.
For those brave enough to commit to the firewalk, there were some stages to complete before the finale. Starting with empowerment seminars, glass walking and then ‘The Arrow Break’ (break an arrow with your throat). All of this was to help people to step out of their comfort zone ready for the firewalk. All of this being organised by Lenny.
Reflecting on the firewalk,
For 2024, Lenny has a brand-new challenge. And it’s just as hair raising as last year’s!
This year, Lenny is supporting local charity ‘Connect For Life’, that does great work supporting people with memory loss or dementia. Something that can touch a lot of families.
Located in Oswestry, Connect For Life provides day care support for older people by offering a safe place where people can meet, in a welcoming environment. Carers of people suffering with memory loss or dementia are able to take a few hours respite. So, an important service for both patient and carer.
To raise money, this July, Lenny will be hiking up 24 peaks in 48 hrs and is asking for donations no matter how small – everything is gratefully received.

If there are local businesses who would like to sponsor a peak and help a great cause, they will be given some exposure in return.
“I will be showing all the businesses that have sponsored me on my Facebook charity page along with any photos or information the business would like.
Each business will be printed on the t-shirt I wear for my hike,” Lenny says.
“The business who sponsors me the most money will receive a small trophy as a thank you, and I will wear a t-shirt printed with their logo for press photos after the event.”
A big thank you goes out to Mike and the team at W&M Agricultrural Engineering, the first business to sponsor Lenny.

How to get your garden summer ready
We’re still having the rain and cold spells but in between those, there’s the odd warmer day. If you’re wondering what you’re going to do with the garden before the warm weather arrives, mapping out changes early and planning for new garden furniture now, will save you loads of time.
A one stop shop for home, garden and DIY in Oswestry is the well-established, Colour Supplies. With a large shop covering everything from fitted kitchens, home décor, bathrooms, furniture and garden to gifts, there’s not much you can’t find there.
But if need some ideas around garden furniture for the summer, there are some things to consider before you take the plunge. Colour Supplies have some advice for those wanting to create the indoors - outdoors.
What’s your lifestyle?
Be clear on what you want your garden area for –entertaining friends and family, parties or relaxing quietly. For casual entertaining, you might choose a dining set with traditional shape table and chairs. But for parties, you might want options that are easy to reconfigure and move easily.
An alternative for casual dining with style are lounge sets. You can opt for a standard coffee table height or one with a higher top, which has more versatility when it comes to laying out food and drinks that are in easy reach for guests.
How much space?
This could dictate your options. Make sure you know the exact space if you are limited to an area of patio for example. You want to be able to move easily around the furniture and avoid things looking cluttered.
Things to think about: the cushion covers – where will they go when it’s not in use through the winter? Maybe you need a garden storage box. Do you need to stack the chairs for storage?
What’s your style?
You could choose a style of furniture that matches your home and therefore complements the exterior and your taste.
With your style, you’ll also know quite quickly what sort of materials will suit your garden. Rattan gives a more traditional vibe but can be quite chic.
Know what you want to achieve with the look, and it will all come together.
Materials
Wood – it’s a traditional look and favoured by many. This furniture does require some upkeep due to natural stains and spores growing on it. If you don’t mind a bit of annual sanding and oiling, this furniture will surely last a lifetime.
Rattan – we’re not talking natural wicker because these days the hardy outdoor version is made from a synthetic resin and requires much less maintenance. The weaves vary depending on the style.
Metal – metal options do have some weight to them so be aware if you’re looking for something that needs to be moved around easily. Aluminium is the lightest choice here and doesn’t rust.
Glass – having glass tops on the tables can help keep things easy to clean. They also protect the original tabletop from any damage.
Before your new furniture arrives, don’t forget to give the patio area a good clean so you don’t have to worry about it during the summer months. If you want to see your options in person, you can find sets in Colour Supplies stores to try out and get a feel for.
Ever gone to the shed when it’s a perfect day for gardening, and the equipment is either broken or has stopped working? I think we all have! Another reason to get ahead this spring.
Check your lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and any other electrical items that have some age to them. You’ll be glad you did when you need it.

TREATING PET GUM DISEASE NATURALLY
Poor oral hygiene can have a direct impact on the whole body, causing problems with the heart, kidneys, liver, diabetes and digestive system.
Ways to Prevent Pet Gum Disease
1. Good Nutrition - Feed a diet with chewy muscle meat and raw meaty bones/fresh veg. Natural diets provide the right habitat for your pet’s healthy oral micro biome. Natural live enzymes and “good” bacteria help prevent tartar build-up.
2. Daily Probiotics - Probiotics help create a healthy oral bacterial environment.
3. Ozonated Oils for Teeth and GumsOzonated oil is infused with ozone, which has powerful antibacterial properties and has been shown to promote healing. The oils don’t taste great, but they do come with different options. Apply using a Q-tip to paint it on teeth and gums. It’ll remove plaque and manage gum infections. Buy an ozone water maker for pets drinking water.
4. Bone Broth - Easy to make. Feed it several times a week. It’s full of minerals that help strengthen teeth and gums.
5. Bee Propolis Tincture - Healing bee propolis is antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral. Apply it to an abscess, swollen gums or use it to cover an exposed root.
6. Aloe Vera for Pain - Aloe vera gel is soothing for pain and inflammation. Keep an aloe vera plant in your house and break off a leaf and apply the gel.
7. Homeopathic Remedies to Repair Teeth - In natural human dentistry, homeopathic remedies are replacing cavity fillings. They work to remineralise teeth, to strengthen teeth and prevent decay.
Calcarea phosphorica 6X
Calcarea fluorica 6X
8. DIY Toothpastes - Apply plain MCT or Coconut oil to pet’s teeth and gums as an antibacterial. Calendula oil is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and soothes the mucous membranes. Calendula promotes healing of the skin and can be used for gingivitis. Remineralising toothpaste to strengthen teeth and repair cavities: 1/4 cup ground eggshells; 1 drop of peppermint essential oil; 1-3 Tbsp MCT/coconut oil; 1 Tbsp (or less) baking soda
Combine then apply.

One hundred and eighty for the ladies
If you’ve managed to catch any of the recent TV coverage of the darts, you’ll know there have been a few tense matches. The surprise this year is Luke Littler, who at the young age of 17 is competing for large amounts of money against seasoned players. It’s certainly brought the world’s attention towards the game of darts.
That’s the guys, but what about the ladies? Well, there is a world darts championship for women and that too is a serious sport. There are some young faces competing for the women’s side and the amount of training it takes to learn the skills they have is amazing.
So ladies, would you consider a game of darts? What about joining a ladies league? It sounds fun and it is fun. Oswestry and District ladies darts league are calling out for some more players to join them.
Joyce Barrow who plays in the league, shares her thoughts, “It’s a great sport and brings us ladies together to socialise and have fun. We want to try and encourage new players into the game and everyone is welcome, no matter your age.
“We would particularly like to encourage public houses, that don’t have a team, to try and establish one. The ladies darts league would help to establish teams if needed and could help to coach new players.”
Last year, the ladies team from the Barley Mow won the league. With trophies to be won and a lot of banter along the way, this is a great way to make new connections and friends and take up a new hobby.
People of all ages play darts as is shown in the world championships and your local darts league is no different. Coming together over common ground is all that’s needed to meet new people.
After covid, the number of darts teams dwindled as people didn’t return to pubs for some time. But now the Oswestry league is in full swing and there is room for more teams.
There are some interesting facts to note about darts that make the sport quirky. For a start, the dart board pattern we see today originated in London and different areas of the country had their own board patterns. Some intricately difficult to make it more challenging.
When you play darts, it’s not just about throwing the darts randomly at the board. In fact, it’s very much a game of strategy. It’s not difficult to learn but it’s certainly a game that requires thinking and tactics. Definitely something to get your teeth in to.
If you enjoy a bit of competition and are looking for something to keep your focus, then darts could be the game for you.
To find out more about the Oswestry and District ladies league, contact Joyce Barrow on 07368 801232.

Wondering how to lose weight?
Super Slimmers in Oswestry have lost an incredible 197.5 stone in weight during January and February this year - that’s the equivalent of 7 polar bears!
Members of Cabin Lane Slimming World groups feel so much better since the start of 2024 and know that they’re creating healthier versions of themselves.
The members, who attend the weekly groups, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses, beans and fruit and veg and to enjoy family favourite meals such as curries, spaghetti bolognaise and chilli and rice.
Claire Morris, the consultant at Cabin Lane says, “I’m delighted that my members are losing weight so beautifully and am so proud of the changes they’re making. It has made a big difference to their lives and their families’ lives. All of them are happier and healthier now.
“Weekly, I get to see members health and confidence improve and there’s no better job satisfaction than that. The support my members give each other helps to keep them motivated and has been integral to their success.
Reaching this milestone as a group in just two months, proves the huge changes that they’ve all made to their lives and in some cases, it’s even saved their lives.
“I have members who joined us with high blood pressure and now it’s normal. Members who have been diagnosed as type two diabetic and are now in remission just by following our plan and are now looking at a healthy future. We also encourage members to become more active which improves mental well-being. As a team, we’re entering Race for Life again and the number of members joining us has doubled this year. I can’t wait to celebrate crossing the finishing line with them all.”

Treatments for the Anxious with Silent Appointments
Meet Eloise Flavell, owner and beauty technician at 11:11 Beauty
By El. In the next few weeks, Eloise will be opening a private salon in Oswestry so she can work closely with existing clients and also welcome in new ones for nail, brow and lash treatments.
But this isn’t really a new thing for Eloise, because for some time now, she has slowly been working towards this moment and her purpose behind her niche offering.
“I started my business a year ago. I was fortunate enough to start my journey with a nail course and I’ve grown my business from there. I am a beauty business based in Oswestry, with an emphasis on providing my clients with exceptional nail and beauty services. After realising education wasn’t the best route for me, I wanted to do something I enjoyed and that made a difference to people’s lives. I started working at an amazing salon in Oswestry called Beauty Base and they helped me into the beauty world massively.
“My main passion is to help people who might be struggling and do something to lift them up. Building up a relationship with my clients in a space they feel most comfortable with is my top priority.”
And it’s the emphasis on helping others that has now driven Eloise in to offering a unique type of appointment for clients – a silent appointment.
“I introduced my silent appointments after some thought
and the response I had was overwhelming.
“I have always enjoyed having beauty treatments, however I personally struggled with the anxiety surrounding the appointments. The idea of just messaging someone or even getting to the actual appointment and worrying about what I might say or if I was going to say something wrong, felt overwhelming. So, a few months in to opening my business, I realised I wanted to offer something that could help people with similar struggles.”
“I understand that for people who struggle with social interaction or anxiety like me although this doesn’t fix the problem it can greatly reduce some of the fear.”
At the appointments, there is no pressure to talk whilst Eloise provides your service. She is also clear about the fact she won’t try to engage you in small talk or general chat as this can be a huge area some people worry about.
Going one step further, bookings for silent appointments can be made via a link on the Facebook business page, eliminating any extra worry and anxiety surrounding that.
“Silent appointments are for anyone, and some people have them just to relax. Others might struggle with stressful lives, so to be able to sit quietly and do something for themselves taking time out, even just for an hour, is essential. Over time in this job, I’ve realised just how vital and how much of a lifeline this can be for some people,” explained Eloise.
“I also work on people with both mental and physical disabilities and this is something I feel needs to be more accessible to them, which I hope I can provide. Beauty treatments should be all exclusive and all accessible and this is what I’m really trying to push with my new salon. I’m so excited to start this new venture and hope it will be a safe space in the community.”
11:11 Beauty By El, will be opening towards the end of March on Oswald Street.

How to keep your wrinkles at bay
There is no specific age to start thinking about facial anti-wrinkle treatments, it really depends on you as an individual, and this applies to men and women. However, if you find yourself wondering what the latest technology is and what the treatments involve, it’s good to ascertain your main concerns and focus on those first. It’s important to do some research and choose a clinician who is medically trained and registered on the GMC or NMC register. You can then be assured that your health, safety and wellbeing is at the forefront of everything they do.
Award winning Aluminate Clinic in Oswestry, is home to aesthetic expert Amanda Tuckwell. By offering advanced non-surgical techniques, Amanda can help you target worries such as loss in facial volume and improving the appearance of things like jowls and skin sagging.
The benefits of non-surgical aesthetic treatments is being the most effective at offering a more youthful appearance.
As these are the most popular treatments at Aluminate Clinic, Amanda talks us through an exciting new technology we can take advantage of.
Tired of looking tired?
If you are suffering with hollowing under the eyes and wrinkles that make you look tired, then treatments using polynucleotides could be for you.
The effects of polynucleotides are seamlessly natural and work to stimulate collagen production and promote tissue regeneration,
whilst using your body’s natural regenerative processes.
As well as targeting wrinkles, what else can we use polynucleotides for?
• Restore skin elasticity
• Improve hollowing under the eyes
• Heal sun-damaged skin
• Improve photo-ageing (UV damage)
• Improve scars
• Restore hydration
• Has anti-inflammatory effect
• Improve cell turnover (cell ageing)
• Reduce hair thinning
A natural look which achieves a youthful result is something to strive for and Amanda understands this well.
“I only deliver natural looking results. So, you’ve no need to worry that you’ll look false, frozen or overdone.
“I had reached ‘that age’ where I looked in the mirror one day and didn’t recognise the person staring back at me. My skin had become dull with an uneven tone. I’d developed deep lines and wrinkles between my eyebrows and around my eyes. I’d reached a point where I felt I needed ‘something’ doing but didn’t know what. None of the creams and beauty products I tried worked at all.”
Losing collagen affects both men and women albeit at different rates throughout their lives. However, the effect is the same and the impact on
confidence and mental well-being can be quite something. It is a well-known fact that men start losing collagen earlier and at a constant rate. In women, collagen loss increases during peri-menopause and accelerates further once they reach menopause.
This is why the Aluminate antiwrinkle treatments are the most requested by clients.

Oswestry Community Games
Sunday 9 June 2024 11am – 4pm Cae Glas Park
by Clive KnightOur eleventh Oswestry Community Games organisation is now well on its way. Last year’s Games were another success with over 30 local organisations contributing to the activities and around 1000 people of all ages took part.
Our funding has now been completed and thanks go to Oswestry BID, Oswestry Town Council, Perspective Finance Group, DRE Accountants, Bunning Gas, Mary Hignett Bequest Fund and Oswestry Sports Forum for their financial support. Oswestry Life will be our media partner, so many thanks to David and his team for their support.
James Manford, Lead Organiser said, “We are delighted the Town Council has again given us free use of Cae Glas Park. Our guest of honour this year will be Darren Edwards from West Felton – disabled adventurer, who in 2023 covered seven marathons in seven continents in seven days and will be setting off on his travels in December leading a ground-breaking expedition to the South Pole. Darren’s chosen charity to raise funds
on the day is Wings for Life, which is a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation with the mission to find a cure. We are also delighted that local group, the Bartells who started with us way back in 2017, have signed up yet again to provide us with more of their amazing live music!
This is a truly inclusive Community Games representing our strap line of ‘Bringing Oswestry Together’, with our logo designed by Megan Palmer in 2014: Live it Love it, No matter what!”
Clubs and organisations who took part in 2023 were again invited to take part in early February and we are delighted that the acceptance list is growing on a daily basis. If your club or organisation would like to take part this year for the first time, please get in touch with James on oswestrycommunitygames@gmail.com and leave a message asap!
Look out for our further progress in next month’s issue!

Immerse Yourself in Classical Music at Whittington Festival
A top-flight music festival with international artists in Whittington? Yes, and it’s happening in May and here is what the celebrated cellist, Steven Isserlis CBE, says about the programme:
“As always, the festival offers a wonderfully fresh and enticing blend of the familiar and the unfamiliar, presented by a very special group of (mostly young) musicians who will give the music their all. It promises to be a marvellous and memorable festival - enjoy it; I know you will.”
This year we are thrilled to welcome star violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason who appeared twice on TV at Christmas along with the rest of his super-talented siblings. The festival kicks off on Thursday 16 May with Vivaldi’s ever-popular Four Seasons and ends on Sunday 19 May with Mendelssohn’s Octet, a lyrical masterpiece written when he was just 16 years old. And between those favourites, you can enjoy music by Handel, Brahms, Schumann, his wife Clara, Mendelssohn’s sister
Fanny, Arvo Pärt and Elgar. Classical music doesn’t have to be stuffy – the concerts are informal, and the enthusiasm of the musicians is infectious.
Braimah will be playing in the Thursday, Saturday and Sunday concerts, and taking part in the workshops on Saturday morning. At 3pm on Saturday 18 May the Family concert showcases local young talent followed by music from jazz duo, pianist Zoe Rahman and flautist Rowland Sutherland. Full details can be found on the festival website www.whittingtonmusicfestival.org.uk where you can book tickets and read what audience members thought of last year’s festival.
But don’t take their word for it – come and experience the music for yourself. As Steven Isserlis says, ‘you will enjoy it!’

OF THE MONTH
Fall (15)
AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX OR TO RENT OR BUY.
I’m a sucker for a high concept film, and this gem from 2022 has a concept that can’t get much higher. Two climbers scale a 2000ft TV tower in the middle of a desert, get to the top, get stuck.
We start with a flashback that has best friends Becky and Hunter, plus Becky’s husband Dan, mountain climbing a year before. Tragedy strikes as Dan falls to his death and a year later Becky has become a recluse. Hunter turns up and suggesting they take a climb together, that tower is being demolished soon and this could be their last chance to scale it.
Becky is persuaded it would be a great place to scatter Dan’s ashes and off they go. It’s an easy climb up but that last ladder to the top looks awfully rusty to the viewer. Ashes duly scattered, they start to descend only for said ladder to break loose and leave them stranded.
‘Fall’ asks the question that films from ‘Speed’ to ‘Apollo 13’ ask, what would you do? With limited supplies, no phone coverage, a small drone and little food and water, options seem to be limited. The film fleshes out the basic concept with hugely effective camera work that really puts you up there, a fair few jumps and a revelation or two along the way.
Be warned, you’ll get very familiar with the edge of your seat during this one. It’s a great idea for a film, lifted by the actors playing the leads putting in great performances as people digging deep to keep going in a seemingly hopeless situation. Hopes are dashed, vultures are circling, and time is running out, so, what would you do? Catch up with one of the best thrillers of recent years is what you should do.
By Michael HudsonSarge Is In Charge – An Inspector Horace Mystery
BY PHILIP JONESWhat’s not to like about a story involving a dog? Well, in case you haven’t already guessed, this is a police dog – Sarge. You would think a dog’s life is pretty straight forward, not for this one. This story takes you through his relationship with Horace, Horace’s wife and daughter, and all the trials and tribulations of being an important part of a police unit.
Inspector Horace and Sarge build a strong bond, and this carries them through their escapades. This is a captivating tale of homelife, gangs and murder where one man and his dog need to solve the mystery. Philip Jones is a Shrewsbury-based author and this is his third book.
Available from all good book shops.
POETRYOld Flame
BY DAVE ANDREWSLast week, by chance, I saw her in the street, And wondered what had brought her to our town,
She’d stopped to chide the children at her feet,
Her face fixed in an old, familiar frown. I stood entranced and watched her from behind
A post and sought the girl I used to know, Compared her to the image in my mind
Of that young woman I loved long ago.
But twenty years have passed and she’s much changed
As I am too. Some unease kept me there
Half hidden, skulking like a man deranged, Instead of calling out I chose to stare. Then suddenly she saw me. Sad to say, I turned my head and quickly walked away.
New Oswestry-based Inspector Probert Murder Mystery for Fiction Lovers
Bolt From The Black is the latest story to head to the book shops by local author Dave Andrews.
A body is found in the moat at Whittington Castle. The body is that of a property developer who had been seeking permission to build a large estate of exclusive houses near Wat’s Dyke on the outskirts of Oswestry.
Suspicion immediately falls on outspoken opponents of the proposal. An internet troll using the pseudonym Avenger Anarchist, who has been sending threatening messages daily, is top of the list. But there are others in the frame too, including a prominent church figure and members of the deceased’s family.
Following his success in solving the case of Edward Sillitoe, Oswestry CID are desperate to entice Detective Chief Inspector Gary Probert back from Telford to head the new investigation. For DCI Probert, it’s also an opportunity to get to know Oswestry a little better - and to see more of Elizabeth.
The story is the sequel to Dave’s first Inspector Probert mystery, Each Slow Dusk, in which
a body is discovered at the foot of the statue of Wilfred Owen in Cae Glas Park.
“I’ve been taken completely by surprise by sales of Each Slow Dusk,” Dave says. “Whenever you start a book, you can never know whether it’s going to prove popular. But I’ve received a huge number of messages and comments from readers. Most of them tell me how much they’ve enjoyed reading about familiar places. Some even tell me that they’ve followed Inspector Probert’s route around town as he was trying to solve the case!
“We’ve also had comments from former Oswestry residents now living in places as far away as Canada, mainland Europe and New Zealand, who have said that Each Slow Dusk reminds them of home and their younger days. It’s amazing and very pleasing.”
Dave is Reader/ Writer in Residence at Oswestry library where he gives talks on various aspects of English and Welsh literature and offers advice to writers. He is the author of twelve books, including The Oswestry Round, Gobowen to Everest and Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry.
“I’m from Wrexham originally but I’ve been living just outside Oswestry for over
thirty years now. In my books I’m always keen to project a positive image of our town and the surrounding area. One reason I made Inspector Probert an outsider was because people who move into the town often see the good things that we locals sometimes take for granted.”
Bolt From The Black will be launched at Whittington Castle and is now available in Booka, Rowanthorn, Siop Cwlwm, Oswestry Library, Oswestry Tourist Office or direct from Dave at daveauthor54@gmail.com priced at £9.99.
A hearty all-in-one dish, this stew can be cooled and kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, then reheated slowly until piping hot. Perfect for supper on a chilly spring evening!

Serves
6
Ingred I ents
• 200g plain flour
• 50g ground almonds
• 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
• ¼ tsp fine salt
• 150g unsalted butter, diced
• 100g marzipan, diced into 1cm pieces
• 125g light muscovado sugar
• 50g amaretti biscuits, roughly crumbled
• 50g flaked almonds
• 800g Bramley apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped (4 medium apples)
• 600g crisp eating apples, peeled, quartered, cored and sliced
• Finely grated zest and juice of a lemon
For the marzipan custard
• 500ml best-quality, bought fresh custard
• 50g marzipan, chopped
• 2 tbsp amaretto
• Vanilla ice cream or Greek yoghurt, to serve
method
1. Combine the flour, ground almonds, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Rub in the diced butter by hand until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Rub in the marzipan, taking less care to break it down – some larger pieces can remain. Stir in 50g of the muscovado sugar with the crumbled amaretti biscuits, flaked almonds and lemon zest.
2. Alternatively, pulse the flour, ground almonds, cinnamon, salt and butter together in the small bowl of a food processor, adding 50g sugar for a final few pulses once the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs and stirring in the marzipan, amaretti, flaked almonds and lemon zest at the end. Either way, cover and chill the crumble mix for 20 minutes or up to 2 days.
3. Preheat the oven to 170°C, fan 150°C, gas mark 3. Combine the apples with the lemon juice to prevent browning. Tumble in the remaining muscovado sugar, distributing the two apple types evenly. Transfer to a medium-sized baking dish about 23cm diameter if round or about 20x25cm if not. Scatter the crumble over the fruit to cover completely.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour 10 minutes until golden, crisp and bubbling at the edges.
5. To flavour the custard, put it in a blender with the chopped marzipan and the Amaretto. Blend for a couple of minutes (this needs to be thorough), then, if your blender isn’t supercharged, pass through a sieve to remove any small marzipan pieces.
6. Leave the crumble to settle for 10 minutes before serving with the marzipan custard (gently warmed through or cold) and vanilla ice cream, or with chilled Greek yoghurt as a simpler option.

How to work your job around your family
Working to earn money whilst giving time to your family is a tricky recipe to get right. But some local companies are able to accommodate family life in to work schedules and Tanat Valley Coaches is one of them.
One driver, Emily Davies, has found a new passion in her career and has been able to work it comfortably around her young family.
Emily grew up in Chirk and now lives with her partner and two children in Maengwynedd and is no stranger to wanting to work in the transport industry because she had intended to follow that path during her college days.
“I went to Walford College, where I took a vehicle technician course but didn’t finish due to being pregnant with my son. So, I ended up working in the care industry but later on, had a change in career and became a PA/Driver for my father-in-law who is a rehabilitation officer for visual impairment at Powys County Council. I still do this job twice a week in between the school runs for Tanat Valley Coaches.”
At Tanat Valley Coaches, there are five female coach/bus drivers, two 16-seat female drivers and four 8-seat minibus/taxi drivers. Emily’s younger sister also drives one of the minibuses. So, you can see how this appeals to both men and women, the proof is in the numbers.
Talking about her journey so far with the bus company, Emily said, “I started working for Tanat Valley Coaches in April 2021 as a school minibus driver. After seeing all the bigger vehicles leaving the yard and my partner Anthony, also having his PSV and Class1HGV licences, it encouraged me to go for the PSV and get it myself.
“I approached managing director, Chris Chadd and operations manager, Nick Williams and asked if I could go for my PSV and they agreed to put me through. Chris, Nick and Anthony have been very encouraging and supportive. All of the drivers are very supportive and give good advice when needed. I passed my PSV licence with Tanat Valley Coaches in August 2023.”
Is it possible to work childcare around a career? This question hits families everywhere for mums and dads. So how has Emily worked this out for her family and how has Tanat Valley Coaches helped her?
“I am very lucky to have people helping me with childcare - my children are 14 and 6. I leave the yard at 7:50am every morning (school term) and another female minibus driver drops my daughter off at breakfast club before starting her run. I am very lucky to have my younger sister living close by who picks up my daughter from school and takes care of her until I finish work. If I work weekends (which isn’t very often) either my partner Anthony or my mother-in-law will have my children for me. My son is picked up by minibus and dropped off in the village of Llanrhaeadr to meet the school coach that takes him to school and is brought back home after school.
“Initially, I was worried about childcare mainly for my 6-year-old and how I could work driving a PSV but I’m lucky that Tanat Valley’s operations controller, Nick, gives me work that fits around my family and my other job.
“I was also worried about joining a mostly male workspace and that I wouldn’t fit into the company because of this. But everyone is approachable and have been so kind to me and helped me along the way.
“I highly recommend working for Tanat Valley Coaches, it fits around my family very well and I’m very lucky to have such a supportive family.
If you are interested in a career driving, Tanat Valley Coaches can be contacted via 01691 780 212 or visit www.tanat.co.uk

Education with a Broader Perspective
Settled in the Shropshire countryside since 1884, Ellesmere College has retained its focus on individual student success while providing outstanding educational and personal success for all students – whether local, regional or international. An incredibly friendly co-ed boarding school, 580 students from ages 7 to 18, and from all across the globe, are encouraged to explore, engage and evolve to the best of their potential through the College’s innovative and dynamic academic and cocurricular opportunities. The school has recently been accredited as an HPL World Class School – one of only 39 schools worldwide - demonstrating our committment to High Performance Learning in all areas across the curriculum.
At every entry point to the College – from Year 3 to Sixth Form in Year 12 – students are offered a broad choice of academic subjects as well as a vast range of co-curricular activities (DofE, CCF, ESB, EPQ, ILM, Survive & Thrive, expeditions, career conventions, affiliations, etc) that develop essential life skillsleadership, initiative, confidence, teambuilding, and above all a belief in themselves that they can achieve if they try their best – the ethos at the heart of the school – to be ’Life:Ready’.
Academic Excellence
From age 7, students are offered a wide curriculum preparing them for their choice of i/GCSEs as they move up to Middle School at age 13 - providing subjects that appeal to all pupils’ interests and academic strengths, while keeping class sizes small. Our award winning DU Category Support for Learning department supports those students with a range of academic needs including dyslexia and dyscalculia. Cocurricular activities such as the ESB, John Muir Awards, Survive & Thrive and the creative arts ensure that all children are fully engaged, learn and are prepared for the world around them.
In Sixth Form, students choose A Levels, BTEC or International Baccalaureate (IB), and our students regularly gain entrance to their first-choice university including Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group institutions. We are ranked in the top 20 British schools offering the IB with students regularly attaining >30 points.
Drama, Music and the Arts – Creative Enrichment
The College was the first independent school to be awarded Artsmark Platinum by the Arts Council of Great Britain for its commitment and delivery of the arts the traditional to more modern media. Singing is an area of real excellence with four award winning choirs and a wide range of ensembles with opportunities to perform. Participation at every level is encouraged and supported by ESB, LAMDA, ballet & dance classes, and individual tuition.
Sports – Olympic Aspirations
We are immensely proud of our sporting tradition at Ellesmere College, and physical education is an integral part of the curriculum – playing for ones’ house or school, or at national, international and Olympic level. We are an accredited WAoS (World Academy of Sport) Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC), which provides greater flexibility to students so they can balance their studies with demanding training and competition schedules –there is no need to compromise one for the other. There are seven distinct Sports Academies – rugby, cricket, tennis, swimming, shooting, football and golf – as well as the wide range of sporting teams and clubs available to pupils across the age spectrum at Ellesmere.
We believe very strongly that education is more than just passing exams but developing the breadth of education to allow pupils to grow and flourish in all academic and co-curricular pursuits. At Ellesmere College we empower and enrich our students to become confident, strong and exceptional young adults – truly Life:Ready.

Nutritional Therapy for Mums
Eating for Energy
The old notion “you can’t pour from an empty cup”, is one that we have all heard but maybe don’t stop to really think about. Motherhood is hard. It takes energy to show up every day for our tiny humans and do “all the stuff” that we need to do.
It’s so easy as a mum to worry about everyone else and forget to feed ourselves! But skipping meals often leads to quick impulse buys of convenience snacks that are not going to be great options in the long term. Relying on sugar and caffeine to get us through the day is a reality for many mums. Eating to fuel ourselves, sustains our energy throughout the day and protects our future health.
Batch cooking and meal planning may feel boring but can be life savers during a busy week. Having nourishing choices ready to go, reduces the temptation to reach for convenience foods on busy days.
Balancing blood sugar levels throughout the day is crucial for sustained energy. By pairing carbohydrates with protein or healthy fat, you slow down glucose absorption, preventing spikes that can then lead to a crash, with fatigue and brain fog following closely behind. Meals such as porridge with nut butter and seeds, scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast, chicken and lentil salad, salmon with sweet potatoes and broccoli are options that will fuel you.
Bulk prepping quick snacks such as boiled eggs, veggie sticks and hummus, mixed nuts and seeds, sliced peppers and guacamole, live yoghurt and berries, means that you are less likely to rely on sugary snacks.
Don’t forget to hydrate! Dehydration can lead to fatigue so keep on top of your water intake to keep your energy levels up.
Try to remember that you are worth more than the scraps off your kid’s plate! Choosing the foods that fuel us rather than drain us can transform how you feel and how you parent.

3 Signs Your Hearing Needs Testing
Managing hearing loss is an important part of ageing healthily. None of us enjoy the thought of losing something so fundamental to our daily lives, but there are signs and symptoms that will tell you when you need to have your hearing checked by a professional.
One such expert in Oswestry is Laura Stone of Cambrian Hearing. As a user of hearing aids herself, Laura understands first hand the feelings around having hearing loss and then going through the process of finding comfortable hearing aids.
As an HCPC registered Hearing Aid Dispenser (official title for an Audiologist), Laura has worked in NHS clinics, independent practices, and was a partner with Specsavers for almost five years. Having added microsuction earwax removal to her list of services in 2018, she has treated over 1000 people!
How do you know if your hearing is ok and what are the signs of hearing loss?
1. You may notice some hearing loss as wax builds up or find that your ears feel blocked and uncomfortable: microsuction earwax removal may solve this.
2. You might start struggling to hear when there’s background noise or think “everybody mumbles these days”. High frequency loss means you don’t hear some of the sharper parts of speech so well, making it seem like people are mumbling.
3. Hearing loss affects high frequency sounds. You might notice you don’t hear the birds sing like you used to, or you can’t hear things like doorbells, or soft sounds like clocks ticking.
Laura explains why you shouldn’t panic if you are struggling to hear. “There’s a difference
between being deaf and having hearing loss. Where there is some loss, a full hearing assessment is beneficial, and a trial of hearing aids will show how your hearing and daily life can be improved. There are so many different models of hearing aid and other assistive devices that there really is a solution for everyone.”
What kind of service will you get from Cambrian Hearing?
“Generally, a hearing test involves an audiologist looking in your ears and playing tones to you through headphones to see what sounds you can hear at different volumes and frequencies.
“At Cambrian Hearing we provide a more thorough assessment which includes taking photos of the inside of your ear canals to record the condition of the ear drum and ear canal, tympanometry (a test of middle ear function), as well as a full hearing test to determine the level and type of hearing loss,” explains Laura.
Hearing Aids
Having to choose an unfamiliar device for the first time can be daunting for anyone, so finding out that Laura offers customers the opportunity to trial hearing aids at home for a week before committing to buy, means they really can find what works for them. Having the right hearing aids can be life changing for some.
The latest technology offers rechargeable Bluetooth hearing aids as an option. If this isn’t for you, there are still a wide range of battery models to choose from, but the focus is on comfort and meeting your individual needs.
If you feel isolated from social activities because you can’t hear, or exhausted because you have to concentrate so hard to hear conversations, now is the time to book a test.
Cambrian Hearing offers support six days per week and appointment availability.

Health
Apoplexy - from ancient Greek: to
When I first worked as a hospital doctor in the 1970’s patients were often admitted with a “Stroke”. This word only officially replaced Hippocrates’ apoplexy a hundred years ago. It was a bleak diagnosis: no effective treatments had evolved over the 2000 years since Hippocrates: patients either recovered, often with severe disability, or died.
All that has changed: 85% of Strokes are caused by a clot blocking a brain artery and, if diagnosed within 4.5 hours, can be treated with clot-busting drugs. Sometimes the clot can even be physically removed via the arm – amazing! The other 15% are caused by a blood vessel bursting so it is essential that patients have an early brain scan before any treatment. So early diagnosis is imperative and we must act FAST:
Face: does the patient have a drooping face or mouth?
Arm: does the patient have weakness of either arm?
a stroke
Speech: is there slurred or absent speech or lack of ability to express or understand speech?
Time: act FAST - call 999
Some patients will have had a TIA. A transient ischaemic attack is where the symptoms all recover within 24 hours. This is a warning shot and the risk of stroke without change is quite high. Time to think of healthy lifestyle choices like weight loss, more exercise, a better diet and not smoking. Also time to see a doctor about medication, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
It is tempting to think of this as a problem of the elderly but surprisingly, there has been a rise in strokes in the younger age groups in recent years. This has been linked to rates of obesity, higher rates of diabetes and a reduction in preventative care. The NHS offers health checks for every patient over 40 years old. Have you had one in the last five years? Maybe it’s time to act fast?

Prestigious Award for Cancer Team at RJAH
The Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service at Oswestry’s specialist orthopaedic hospital is now award winning – after taking home the Team of the Year Award at the Bone Cancer Research Trust’s (BCRT) Bone Idols Awards.
The team – who work on Montgomery Unit and Oswald Ward at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital – were nominated by patients, who praised them for providing outstanding holistic care throughout the patient journey, from diagnosis, surgery, rehabilitation and then ongoing support and monitoring.
The Bone Idols Awards were set up by the BCRT to celebrate those who show exceptional dedication to improving the lives of bone cancer patients.
Miss Gillian Cribb, Consultant Orthopaedic and Oncological Surgeon, said, “I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say we are delighted to have been announced as winners in the Team of the Year category at the Bone Idols 2024. Thank you to the patients who nominated us.
“The research, awareness and support carried out by the BCRT complements so much of the clinical work we undertake at RJAH, and we are grateful for their support.
“This award is a fantastic demonstration of how the team provide high quality, dedicated, personalised and holistic care to our patients on a day-to-day basis. The team expands much further than the Montgomery Unit and includes other areas that are involved in the pathway of bone sarcoma patients, including the Oswald Ward, Radiology, Pathology, Theatres, the High Dependency Unit, Pre-Operative Assessment and more.”
Dr Zoe Davison, Head of Research, Information and Support at the BCRT, added, “We are delighted that the Montgomery Unit have been recognised and celebrated in this way for their service to the bone cancer community.
“They have been recognised for consistently going above and beyond, with patients describing how lucky they feel to be treated by such a dedicated team who take time to deliver highly personalised care. It is an honour to provide them with this well-deserved Team of the Year Award.”

Charitable giving and tax incentives
Tax incentives for charitable giving have long played a crucial role in encouraging individuals and businesses to support charitable causes and also can ensure more money goes to charities.
Gift Aid
Gift Aid is a scheme available to UK charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) which means that they can claim back basic rate income tax from HMRC on donations: an extra 25p for every £1 donated under Gift Aid.
A charity can claim Gift Aid when you make a monetary donation from your own funds and have paid UK income and/or capital gains tax during that tax year. The amount of tax you pay needs to be at least equal to the value of Gift Aid that the charity or CASC will claim on your donation(s).
Tax relief at a higher and additional rate must be claimed by the donor, usually on the self-assessment tax return.
Non-cash donations
In the UK, you can donate cash, shares or property to charity and all three have different tax implications. For example, donating shares might be most tax-effective for
you, but the charity won’t be able to claim the Gift Aid and could ultimately receive less money.
Executors or trustees of a will sometimes transfer property to a charity where there is a built-in capital gain arising in the holding period after the death. The charity then sells the property and uses the proceeds for its charitable purposes.
Legacy giving
Tax advantages can make a significant difference to the beneficiaries of an estate. A gift to a UK charity in a will is free from inheritance tax, meaning that the money is ‘removed’ from the value of a donor’s estate before tax is calculated. In addition to the donation being tax free, charitable gifts can reduce the amount of inheritance tax paid on the rest of the estate. If 10% or more of the estate is gifted to charity, then the rate of inheritance tax paid on the rest of the estate is reduced from 40% to 36%.

The property benefits from a new shop frontage and is offered in shell condition but will include WC and kitchenette area. The units would lend themselves to a variety of commercial uses.
This new development is situated directly opposite Poundland, on the busy prime area of Cross Street.
As energy prices rise, households are increasingly looking for ways to reduce energy costs and insulation spray foam sounds like a good option. But Which? warn of scammers – doorstep as well as phone and onlineselling dodgy spray foam insulation.
Spray foam typically costs between £600 and £1100 but, due to safety issues, needs to be BBA approved and installed by a professional with BBA qualifications. Check tradesmen are registered with the BBA (British Board of Agrément).
According to trueCall, a provider of call-blocking devices, insulation was one of the most common nuisance call topics last year. One victim bought spray foam for loft insulation for £3,500 but had to pay £2,000 to remove it before they could sell the house.
What is a Romance Scam?
It’s when people meet through an online dating site, dating app or social media account like Facebook but scammers set up fake profiles and target charity Facebook pages for people discussing mental health, bereavement and ageing and they particularly target vulnerable people who have experienced a recent trauma – like divorce or bereavement.
They befriend people by playing on their emotions and use the person’s trust to get them to communicate via text messages or WhatsApp. But their profile is fake and, once they have gained a person’s trust, they request money or obtain enough personal information to steal their identity. Watch out for anyone who claims they work abroad or on an oil rig. Be really careful about sharing personal information and private pictures which can be used against you and think twice about sending them money. Crypto currency apps feature in so many fraud cases that some UK banks now block bank transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges.

Why talking about hidden disabilities is essential
A young woman, having suffered a brain injury at birth, is raising awareness of the challenges of living with a hidden disability.
Anna Redding, who went to Derwen College near Oswestry, is an advocate for people with disabilities and has ambitions to become a TV actor.
Anna spoke to clinical negligence solicitor, Lucy Small, in Lanyon Bowdler’s Legal Lounge podcast, explaining how she won’t allow her brain injury to hold her back.
Another of Anna’s talents is drawing portraits using a lightbox, which has led to some special guests visiting Derwen College in recent times.
She says, “I found it hard to make friends as I was growing up because people would think of me as the odd one out because I had a disability, and they thought I wouldn’t understand what they were talking about.
“I found secondary school hard but going to Derwen College changed everything. I studied Performing Artssinging, drama, dance, and made loads of friends.”
Anna has a wide range of hobbies, including street dance with Identity School of Dance in Shrewsbury, as well as singing and acting in a variety of performances.
One outcome of Anna’s brain injury is short-term memory loss, making processes like learning lines more difficult - but Anna has adapted.
Anna says, “I drew a portrait of Jayshree Patel, who is a writer on Hollyoaks and Eastenders. I asked whether she would like to come and talk to some performing arts students about how to get into scriptwriting, and she visited us at Derwen which was great.”
Anna has written her own script and has ambitions to act professionally in the future. In the meantime, she is continuing to highlight how many people live with hidden disabilities and how important it is for us all to have more patience and be less judgemental.

As we move into spring “proper” there is so much more colour around and so many more things to photograph. Our summer visiting birds will be arriving, and there will be new life emerging. Hopefully the ground will soon dry out and be easier to walk on and I can also be less worried about rain damage to the cameras. But, of course there will be the April showers!

DA Bunning Gas LTD Announces Expansion with AA Gas Services Take Over
DA Bunning Gas LTD, a gas engineering company operating from Whittington Business Park, has announced the exciting news that they will be taking over all gas engineering work from AA Gas Services, also based in Oswestry.
AA Gas Services, a gas engineering company headed up by Clive Denham with the support of Shelley Paterson, was established in 1989, and has been offering a quality service to the people of Oswestry ever since. After 35 years in the industry, Clive has decided to slow down, and hang up his tools to retire and cease trading as AA Gas Services. To ensure Clive’s customers still received a quality service, Clive approached Dale Bunning of DA Bunning Gas LTD, an old friend and work colleague, regarding the takeover of the company customer base, to which Dale jumped at the chance of being involved with.
Clive said “After first working with
Dale 15 years ago, and being able to support him at the start of his business, I could not wish to hand my customers over to a better person. He has grown an excellent business over the years, and he has the same ethics and working practices that we have always prided ourselves on.
“I know Dale and his staff will continue to care for my customers needs with integrity and professionalism.
“I’ve enjoyed my time in the industry but am ready for a well-earned rest and spending time with the family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my customers past and present for their support over the last 35 years, and wish Dale and his staff all the best for the future
Dale said “I’ve worked with Clive and AA Gas Services for many years, so when Clive approached me with the opportunity to take over their current gas work, I was over the moon and couldn’t wait to get started.
“DA Bunning Gas LTD is a family run business of Gas Safe Registered engineers, and we have been working across Oswestry and the surrounding areas since 2011. We pride ourselves on offering a thorough and quality service, using genuine parts if required, and customer service is at the heart of everything we do. We are looking forward to working with Clive’s customers in the not-toodistant future, and we wish Clive all the best in his retirement”
Home Turn your bricks and mortar into your dream home
It can be an uncertain road to go down when you first start thinking about making big changes to your home. After all, changing one thing might mean having to make adjustments somewhere else.
Once you know what you want your end result to be, whether it’s an extension, a new porch, some bricklaying or groundworks, you need to find a reliable, local building company.
Once such business is Birch & Sons General Building, based locally around Oswestry. As a family run business, they value their clients and offer high quality work at reasonable rates. But if you’ve never had to work with a building company before, what questions should you be asking? Josh, from Birch & Sons, has some tips for you if you’re a first timer.
Finding the right builder
What you need is the right builder for your project. So, asking questions about their experience and the areas of expertise they have will tell you very quickly if you can work with them. If they’re going to be making major changes to your home, you want to be able to trust them and you should get along with them too.
Are they reliable?
Reputable and reliable builders can always give you testimonials from clients and show you examples of their previous work. Make sure you ask to see examples of work that is similar to your own project.
What should you see in a quote?
Always check what is included in the price. Sometimes, if you’re not careful you could be caught out with something as simple as it not including removing rubble or old cabinets.
What do you need to provide a builder with?
If you have plans you can share with a builder, this will help them provide a more accurate quote for you.
Be clear and open about your goals and expectations for the project. When you share your desired outcomes, and any specific features you were thinking about, there are no surprises for the builder.
Do you use a large business or small business?
Birch & Sons are a family run business which means they benefit from sharing their expertise between a tight-knit team and they don’t experience a high turnover of staff, so are more reliable.
Going with a builder who makes you feel comfortable by instilling trust says a lot more than choosing one because they seem well-known.
Remember, never feel pressured to sign any contract or agree to any work, until you are in 100% agreement with your builder. This benefits both of you.
Here’s what our clients say:
“We’ve had two new offices and a bathroom upgrade by Joshua and his team in the last 6 months, and we are extremely happy with the results. Joshua kept us updated with progress and was a phone call away if we had any queries. Ben and Mark did amazing work and let us know each day what was happening. Definitely plan to use them again for future projects we have lined up and would recommend them.” –Gareth, Feb 2024

by Stephanie DhillonVibrant Spring
Spring doesn’t always have to be about bunnies, eggs and pastel colours. The days are longer and brighter and vibrant colours are popping up everywhere. So don’t be scared to embrace the colourful hues of summer already. Aim as you mean to go on. Look at saturated colours for your homewares. Layering up table settings with a drench of bright colours, from table runners to candles, baskets to crockery, will mean you will enjoy all that colour in your home right to the end of the summer.

April in the garden
by Graham MitchellIt is difficult to know when spring plants will be flowering this year, the weather has been keeping both them and us guessing. But we do know that we must take care for another 6 weeks or so before we pass the risk of frost. You can start sowing hardy annuals and wildflower seeds outside now but check the packets beforehand. Half-hardy annuals can be sown indoors and with many varieties they do take a long time to reach a size suitable to plant in baskets. Planting early can get them to a decent size.
Many shrubs and roses could do with an early spring
feed as they are starting to grow rapidly. Make sure that the climbing roses are securely supported as they gain height and train the main shoots horizontally to encourage more shoots and flowers. Another candidate for some TLC will be the garden lawn. Bare patches need to be sorted before the heavy use later in the summer, and the whole lawn given a good spring feed.
Keep a good look out for pests especially aphids attracted to the fresh new leaves and buds. Gently rubbing them off by hand now will help reduce numbers and save having to resort to other measures later. A tray or two of polyanthus and pansies planted out now will add a great splash of colour to planters and beds filling the gap between spring bulbs and summer annuals.
I took my own advice last month and painted the shed bright blue. I am pleased with the result, even though it has been described as the “Tardis”. If you like to feed the birds and have hung a new bird feeder out, don’t get despondent if they don’t seem to use it. Did you know it can take several months for them to find and regularly use it? Persevere but make sure the contents don’t go mouldy.

Best company around for “Muck Aways”! Recently used The Muck Shifter to dig out footings, in a very tricky, and challenging, area of our property! HOW SECURE IS YOUR RETIREMENT FUND?
In times of economic uncertainty - like a recession - maintaining the stability of your retirement fund becomes even more important.
We’re seeing a number of clients get in touch about this at Belgrave Wincham, with many concerned about how it could impact them.
Here, our director, Craig Roberts, offers some key advice to help navigate your way through choppy financial waters.
“Firstly”, Craig explains, “diversification is key. It can be beneficial to spread your investments across various assets to lessen any risks. During a recession, traditional safe-haven assets may not offer the same level of protection as before.”
Instead, he suggests: “It’s often worth considering a more ‘defensive’ style of investment, allocating a portion of your portfolio to alternative assets. The aim of this is to cushion against market downturns.”
Don’t underestimate the power of planning either. According to research, some 38% of UK adults are under-saving for retirement. Craig adds: “Delaying looking into your current situation or retirement savings can exacerbate the impact of a recession on your financial well-being. Even small changes or contributions made consistently over time can accumulate significantly, especially when taking advantage of tax-efficient vehicles like ISAs or workplace pensions.”
Seeking professional guidance is also paramount. Craig continues: “Sometimes people can panic during economic downturns and make impulsive decisions that go on to negatively impact their long-term financial goals. If you’re concerned, talk to an independent financial adviser. They can provide you with tailored advice to help you make informed decisions, even in turbulent times.”
Lastly, don’t overlook the importance of reviewing and adjusting your retirement plan. “Life circumstances change, as do economic conditions,” emphasises Craig. “Regularly reassessing your retirement strategy or working with an independent financial adviser to do this on your behalf, will ensure it remains aligned with your goals and adaptable to market fluctuations.”
For impartial advice on protecting your retirement savings during financial uncertainty, call Craig at Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

Why would I need a Lasting Power of Attorney when I have a husband?
Q: My daughter is trying to persuade me to get a Lasting Power of Attorney drawn up, but why would I need to do that when I have a husband who has looked after me and our affairs for the past 45 years, and continues to do so very well?
A: Everyone of a certain age should have a registered LPA in place so that if the unexpected happens, then someone you trust can step in immediately and handle your affairs.
Even if your husband is in good health and has full mental capacity now, it does not necessarily mean that this will be the case for the rest of your life. If, for example, you and your husband hold joint assets, unless you have an LPA in place your husband may not be able to dispose of those assets if you should lose mental capacity and it becomes necessary for him to release them. If he had to apply to the Court of Protection to take over your affairs, he may suffer financial hardship whilst waiting for the deputyship to be processed and granted.
An even worse scenario would be if you lost capacity and your husband died or also became incapacitated. In those circumstances anyone over the age of 18 could apply to the Court of Protection to become your attorney and provided nobody objected to their application it could be granted. In other words, the Court of Protection could appoint someone who would not be your choice. For this reason, and to provide you with long term protection, you should appoint not just a primary attorney or multiple attorneys, but also replacement attorneys.
Making an LPA and registering it now, whilst you have full capacity, is the only real way of ensuring that your care and finances will be decided by someone you trust, in accordance with your wishes. You could appoint your husband as joint attorney with your daughter.
