to Oswestry Life Welcome

There’s no better smell than bacon crisping in the pan first thing in the morning… scratch that, any time of day! Maybe your thing is a bacon butty or pancakes, bacon and syrup. Well, this month, 20 August is your day because it’s National Bacon Lovers Day!

A good fry up is as British as it gets and I think you’ll agree, bacon from the butcher’s counter is THE best, so you’d better get your skates on before the 20th if you want the good stuff. Maybe it calls for a brekkie out in town – where’s your favourite spot?

Don’t forget – Monday 26 is August bank holiday.

Tournament in memory of Tallie

Tallie Brazier, a popular young woman from Oswestry, sadly passed away in April this year. In honour of Tallie, Kev Potts and Josh Pearce have set up a women’s 8-a-side charity tournament in her memory to raise funds for her favourite charity, the Sea Watch Foundation. Tallie had been a faithful supporter of The New Saints Football Club and played goalkeeper for The New Saints Women at youth level.

The tournament took place on 30 June with a total of 10 women’s teams playing for the Tallie Brazier Cup. A stand in cup was used, whilst the actual cup is being made by The British Ironworks and will be ready before the end of the year.

The cup winners were Shifnal Town Ladies FC who beat Berriew in a closely fought final. Throughout the day all the players signed a special GK shirt which was then presented to Cady, Tallie’s sister. This is currently being framed by Oswestry Framing Company.

Along with the tournament there was a raffle and auction. “The kindness shown by all the local businesses was awesome with over 80 prizes up for grabs plus 6 incredible auction lots. Sainsburys also held a collection at their checkouts which raised £426.56 as well as donating water and bananas for the players and officials,” Kev explained.

Josh added, “We would personally like to thank The New Saints for giving us their facilities for the entire day. Also, to The New Saints’ Simon O’Reilly and James Steer, their help throughout the day was priceless. Huge thanks also goes to Andy Poole at Macron and Oswestry Life for sponsoring our event.

“Thank you to everyone that helped on the day, donated a prize to the raffle and auction, sponsored the equipment, medals and trophies. Finally, to everyone that bought raffle tickets and supported our great event.

“We’re very pleased to announce we have raised a phenomenal £6,550 which is going to Tallie’s charity, the Sea Watch Foundation.”

This is the start of an annual event, so Kev and Josh will soon be bringing a committee together to share the workload. If you would like to be part of this committee please email kevpotts2005@btinternet.com.

More info can be found on the Tallie Brazier Cup Facebook page.

Hope House ball raises £35,000!

An Arabian Delights summer ball, hosted by Hope House children’s hospice, was a magical evening which raised a magnificent £35,000 to support local children and families.

Revellers enjoyed a night filled with enchantment, escaping into a whole new world of Arabian wonders for a colourful evening of fun and fundraising at Lion Quays Resort, near Oswestry. The event was a feast for the senses, featuring glamour, delicious food and drink, live entertainment and auctions.

The evening featured a guest appearance by mum Rhiannon Jones who captured everyone’s hearts with a moving speech about how Hope House supports her two-year-old son Axel as well as her and his siblings.

Silent and live auctions boosted the fundraising, with prizes including a signed Wrexham FC football shirt, dining experience at Docket Restaurant, in Whitchurch, gin experience at Ludlow Distillery and a tour of Dyfi Distillery. The auctions alone raised over £22,000.

Guests were left amazed by surprise singing waiters and danced the night away thanks to live music from Rhythm Train.

Fundraising team leader Cat Dowdeswell thanked everyone who was part of the sumptuous event.

She said, “What a wonderful evening! Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fabulous night of Arabian Delights. We’re thrilled that everyone had a lovely time and were all so kind and generous. We are very happy to have raised more than £35,000. Everyone’s contributions will go a long way in supporting our mission to be there for every family who needs us.

“Thank you as well to our generous sponsors, Select A Skip, GS and PA Reeves and Shropshire Welding who helped make this night possible.”

£5,000 could be up for grabs

Oswestry Town Council is welcoming applications from businesses and start-ups for grants to bring empty retail premises back into use.

Funding of up to £5,000 is up for grabs from the Council’s Breathing New Life into Empty Properties scheme for businesses looking to set up in premises that have been vacant for more than six months in Oswestry town centre.

Grants can be used to refurbish and fit out premises as well as decoration, signage and improving accessibility.

Empty retail units and the condition of retail properties are seen as important indicators of the health of a high street and are a problem nationally. Whilst Oswestry has fewer empty retails premises than most towns, the Council would like to see empty shops re-let.

The Mayor of Oswestry Councillor Mike Isherwood said: “We are blessed with a vibrant town centre with award winning markets, an eclectic mix of shops as well as great pubs and cafes. This is a great opportunity to help businesses set up in the heart of our lovely town too. The grants will be a boost for them and our high streets. Everyone is a winner.

Early applications are urged as funding is limited and needs to be spent by 31 March 2025. Anyone wanting more information, or an informal discussion can email corriedavies@oswestry-tc.gov.uk.

It’s hard to know what to expect when you become a Mayor. Not much can prepare you for the experience but, one month in, I would definitely recommend it! The reason is simple: you meet amazing people doing things they are passionate about, completely in their elements – and that’s always a great time to get to know someone. Take the weekend of 15 - 16 June. I had the pleasure of supporting three events on the Saturday, each unique, two which were brand new to Oswestry’s ever-growing calendar of activities.

Firstly, I visited stands, exhibitions and stalls at Oswestry’s first Green Day, a new event held by the Oswestry In Bloom committee with support from Oswestry Town Council showcasing their ambition to help Oswestry become more eco-friendly and sustainable. Despite the dodgy weather, people turned out to enjoy free plants and cake on offer in the Willow Garden, get advice from experts on energy efficiency, gardening sustainably, and many other green initiatives – and there was a real buzz around the beekeepers’ stall!

My next stop couldn’t have been more different: the Clwyd Veteran & Vintage Machinery Society show at Park Hall. The society has been coming to Oswestry for over 20 years for its annual gathering and the vehicles on display were stunning. Machines evoke so many memories, particularly cars that have been part of our lives – especially as children – as well as those associated with work, the Armed Forces, and agriculture. Speaking to owners who invest so much of themselves in their vehicles was a real pleasure. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s wonderful that we can share in it.

Lastly, I was privileged to have the opportunity to speak to the crowd at the first Oswestry Pride parade. Recognising and celebrating every part of our fantastic community is the main duty of Mayor and the atmosphere created by this joyful jamboree was uplifting and inspiring – an amazing achievement by the organisers and I hope this event becomes a highlight of the Oswestry summer.

Men’s Shed – A safe haven for men

Age jokes aside, Oswestry Men’s Shed is actually just that - a place where senior men can find that all-too-rare occasion to be with other men at a similar stage in life. A place that provides a safe environment where men can come together and make new friends when they finish working.

First conceived at a conference in Australia in 1995 where it was recognised that a way to promote men’s health and social interaction was needed and Men’s Shed was born.

Although it took three years for that idea to become a reality, the idea took off and soon the UK Men’s Sheds Association was formed where each Shed was a separate entity with aims and objectives to suit its community and its members. The growth in popularity

of Men’s Shed has been phenomenal, with around 600 Sheds currently open, a further 140 in development with six new Sheds opening each month. The 15,000 members enjoying the benefits of social connections, friendship building, skill and knowledge sharing and of course a lot of laughter usually accompanied by lots of cups of coffee!

Oswestry Men’s Shed was conceived in 2014 when five founder members got together and came up with the idea of setting it up BUT a lot was needed. The list was extensive with money to build it and possible sponsorship/donations, a location to site the shed and most importantly, members; those people with the interest and the ability to build it and make it work; but what would it take to turn their idea into reality?

Oswestry Showground offered up a site in 2015 and the first building, a donated cabin, took pride of place and the social area and kitchen was set up inside. This first building was not really big enough to house the equipment to make anything, so similar to the Jaws movie, the approach was...“we’re going to need a bigger shed!”

A site was cleared next to the main building, and a self-built woodwork shed was constructed by the members. Since then, a metalwork unit and arts and craft/model making workshop has been built with 48 local men using the facilities.

Oswestry Men’s Shed are glad to be celebrating the time since its inception and the progress that it’s made. They feel they’ve catered well in combatting the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person’s health and wellbeing.

Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and unlike women of a similar age, less older men have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about personal worries.

It’s not always the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. Men’s Shed can change all of that and Oswestry have done their best to fulfil these objectives.

Oswestry Men’s Shed is now firmly established and recognised as a model many sheds are endeavouring to follow. The ‘Shed’ is a safe, friendly and inclusive space for men to make friends, have a joke and generally enjoy themselves in a warm and inviting environment. They are also involved in the community where they construct outdoor equipment for local schools, take on repair project for local people and attend the local fundraising events in support of local communities.

New members are always welcome so don’t hesitate to send anyone down to the shed to have a look around.

To find out more, visit the Facebook page: Oswestry Men’s Shed.

Paws fOr Thought ws

Summer is here! But did you realise, even pleasantly warm days can be too hot outside for your pet? Generally, it’s safe in temperatures up to 19c (68F) but take care in anything hotter.

Animals can get heat stroke and burns much faster than humans, so don’t use how you are feeling as the benchmark. Heat stroke is dangerous. It can cause permanent brain or organ damage.

Signs Of Heat Stroke in Animals

• Excessive panting

• Excessive thirst

• Glazed eyes

• Increased salivation

• Dry, pale gums

• Bright or dark red tongue or gums

• Rapid pulse

• Weakness, staggering, confusion

• Collapse

Pets with flat faces like pugs, dwarf rabbits, Persian cats, elderly pets and those with existing health conditions may overheat faster.

Treating Heat Stroke at Home

1. Get your pet into the shade. Grassy areas will be cooler than asphalt/concrete.

2. Apply cool water onto the inner thighs and stomach where there are larger blood vessels, and on the paw pads.

3. Cool, circulating air e.g. a fan or air condition, or in a breezy spot if outside. DON’T apply damp towels - this will act like a sauna!

4. Keep moving, encourage your pet to stand or slowly walk around while cooling down so the cooled blood circulates throughout the body.

5. Give small amounts of cool (not cold or iced) water for hydration.

6. Visit the Vet ASAP!

The effects of heat stroke can continue for 48 to 72 hours.

Preventing Heat Stroke

• Always be aware of the temperature.

• Find spots that offer some shade.

• Make sure cool, clean water is always accessible. Carry plenty of drinking water and a portable bowl.

• Buy a cooling mat, vest or bandana.

Shaving your pet DOESN’T keep it cool, as you’re removing the insulation layer which traps and allows cool air to circulate near the skin.

FILM OF THE MONTH

Brian and Charles (PG)

AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX AND RENT OR BUY ELSEWHERE.

This little gem reached the screen locally back in 2022, but anyone who missed it back then can catch up now, courtesy of Netflix. ‘Brian and Charles’ is a delightful low budget comedy with the feel of a modern day Ealing film, full of charm and whimsy but never twee. It occasionally touches on more serious topics including rural isolation and, strangely enough, AI, but always in a slightly ramshackle and homely way.

Brian Gittins is a failed inventor living in rural Wales, his strange inventions having no real-world application and rarely work anyway. He lives alone and clearly lacks social skills and friends, earning money as a handyman while secretly pining for Hazel, whose mother he sometimes works for.

One day he builds a strange clunky robot from a mannequin head and the body of washing machine. During a thunderstorm a bolt of lightning brings the robot to life, à la Frankenstein’s monster. The robot learns English from a dictionary and calls itself Charles and the two strike up the friendship Brian needs. The film becomes a mix of buddy and odd couple movies, shot through with an awkwardly British, maybe Welsh, comic sensibility.

Initially resistant to letting him out of the house, Brian finds Charles’ curiosity about the wider world opens up new opportunities in his own life, there’s a tentative romance with Hazel, a run in with village bullies, and an exciting cabbage bazooka featuring finale. It all ends on the platform of Llangollen Station as Brian lets Charles go off and make his own way in the world. No big stars, no CGI, just a simple glowing blue eye and 90 minutes of heart.

And calculate the profit they will earn. It’s time to act, it’s time to show support For modern-day defenders of our fort.

Celebrating 150th Restoration Anniversary of St. Oswald’s

During the English Civil War, the Battle of Oswestry resulted in the capture of the Royalist town by Parliamentary forces and St. Oswald’s Church was extensively damaged. Following 200 years of piecemeal repairs, the famed Victorian architect George Street was commissioned to restore the building to its former glory. However, the story of St. Oswald’s goes much further back with links to the death of the 7th

century King Oswald in the Battle of Maserfeld, the hanging of his body on a tree which became known as ‘Oswald’s-tree’, from which the town’s name of Oswestry is thought to be derived.

This year, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Victorian restoration, a festival is running from July to October. It includes a variety of talks, music and other events as well as displays in the Church. The programme aims to illustrate how the history of Oswestry and St. Oswald’s is intertwined and will draw on Oswestry’s links to Welsh and English history and their cultural heritages.

Many of the events are free to enter, and tickets for the ‘Summer Evening’ series cost £10 and are available from R.J. Christian (Jewellers) on the Bailey Head, or from St. Oswald’s Church office.

Orange and spices are a great combination that goes wonderfully with pork. Try this easy-to-make meal that’s guaranteed to tantalise the taste buds.

Ingred I ents

• 4 lean pork loin medallions or steaks, fat removed

For the marinade

• Zest and juice of 1 small orange

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 2 tsp garlic-flavoured olive oil

• ½ tsp dried chilli flakes

For the wholegrain couscous salad

• 300g wholewheat or plain couscous

• 1 small red onion, peeled and finely chopped

• 35g raisins

• 50g baby spinach or watercress leaves

• 100g cherry tomatoes, quartered

• Zest and juice of 1 lemon

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

method

1. In a shallow bowl, mix all the marinade ingredients together. Add the pork and coat on both sides. Cover and marinate for 10 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, cook the couscous according to the packet instructions. Fluff up with a fork and cool slightly. Add the couscous salad ingredients and season to taste.

3. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4.

4. Heat a non-stick ovenproof or griddle pan for a few minutes until hot. Add the pork (discard the marinade) and cook for 10 minutes, turning once. Turn the pork over, place the pan on the middle shelf in the preheated oven and cook for a further 6-8 minutes or until the juices run clear.

Serves 8 | Preparation time 30 minutes, plus freezing

Summer berry slice

Easy to make, this layered frozen yoghurt dessert makes a great cooler on a hot day. For a vegan option, use plant-based yoghurt and vegan maple syrup instead of honey.

Ingred I ents

• 200g strawberries, rinsed and hulled

• 300g low-fat Greek yoghurt

• ½ tsp grated orange zest

• 100g runny honey

• 200g blackberries

• ½ tsp vanilla extract

• 200g raspberries

• 200g blueberries

• 5 fresh mint leaves, plus extra sprigs to serve

• Extra mixed berries to serve

method

1. Line a 900g loaf tin with clingfilm.

2. Place the strawberries in a blender or food processor or use a hand-held stick blender to blend to a pulp. If you don’t have either, then mash to a rough paste. Stir in 75g yoghurt, the orange zest, 25g honey and pour into the base of the prepared loaf tin. Freeze for 2 hours, until almost solid.

3. Blend the blackberries with the vanilla extract until smooth. If you like you can sieve this mixture to remove the pips. Stir in 75g yoghurt and 25g honey, then pour over the strawberry layer and freeze for 2 hours.

4. Repeat with the raspberries, sieve to remove pips if preferred and stir in the yoghurt and honey. Pour it over the blackberries and freeze for 2 hours.

5. For the final layer, blend the blueberries with the mint, stir in the remaining yoghurt and honey and pour over the raspberry layer. Freeze for 2 hours.

6. Remove from the freezer 5 minutes before serving to make slicing easier. Serve in slices with extra berries and mint sprigs.

Focus on… Castle Bank

through the lens of Graham Mitchell

Castle Bank is all that remains of our imposing castle, which defended the town and was part of a defensive chain along the Welsh border. The steps are steep, but you are rewarded with views of the Hillfort, Brogyntyn Estate, The Cambrian Railway Works and far across the Shropshire Plain. With a birds eye view of the town it is a wonderful place to watch the sunrise or sunset.

Hypnotherapy for Children and Teens

As parents and guardians, we always seek the best ways to support our children’s health and wellbeing. One therapeutic option that’s gained popularity is hypnotherapy. Often misunderstood, hypnotherapy is a legitimate, evidencebased practice that can offer significant benefits for children dealing with a variety of issues.

Hypnotherapy involves guiding your child into a deeply relaxed state, known as hypnosis. It’s a natural state of consciousness where the mind is more open to positive suggestions, which can help release unhelpful behaviours or beliefs.

We naturally experience light hypnosis when we daydream, so it’s a familiar and comfortable state. A hypnotherapist helps their client go deeper into this state to facilitate positive changes.

Imagine your teen’s mind as an iceberg. The small part above the surface represents the conscious mind, which is logical and analytical. However, this only makes up about 5% of the mind. The much larger part beneath the surface is the subconscious mind, which handles feelings and emotions. This part is in charge and stores all experiences and patterns, both helpful and unhelpful.

This explains why children can sometimes act contrary to what they logically know or what you’ve taught them, as deeper, subconscious patterns influence their behaviour.

It’s also important to dispel common myths: hypnotherapy isn’t mind control or manipulation. A hypnotherapist can’t make your child/teen do anything against their will or reveal secrets they don’t wish to share.

Hypnotherapy can help with:

Stress and Anxiety Management

- Children and teens today face numerous stressors, from academic pressures to social challenges. Hypnotherapy can help them develop coping mechanisms, reduce anxiety levels, and build self-confidence and self-esteem.

Improving Sleep Patterns - Many children and young people struggle with sleep issues, affecting their health and academic performance. Hypnotherapy can teach relaxation techniques and establish positive sleep associations, leading to better sleep patterns and improved rest.

Behaviours - Hypnotherapy can be effective in addressing behaviours such as bedwetting, nail-biting, angry outbursts (or any issue) that is causing distress. Through positive reinforcement and the establishment of new habits, children can learn to manage and eventually overcome the things they’re struggling with.

Pain Management - Children suffering from chronic pain or undergoing medical treatments can benefit from hypnotherapy as a complementary approach to pain management. Techniques learned in hypnotherapy can help reduce the perception of pain and increase comfort.

Hypnotherapy offers a supportive way to help your child/young person manage various challenges, from stress and anxiety to behavioural issues, pain management and much more. By fostering a positive, supportive environment and leveraging the power of the mind, hypnotherapy can empower your child to overcome obstacles and thrive.

As an Advanced Hypnotherapist, CBT/NLP Practitioner, and Happiness Club Trainer, I deliver hypnotherapy sessions tailored to children and teens, either face-to-face or online, integrating techniques from various modalities to provide comprehensive support.

Nutritional Therapy for Mums

Mighty Magnesium

When people find out I’m a nutritional therapist, they often ask me about supplements and what they should be taking. Unfortunately, there is no “magic pill” and whilst supplements can sometimes be useful, you can’t make up for a poor diet by relying on them.

Saying this, one nutrient that can enhance well-being and energy levels is magnesium. Known as a “miracle mineral,” magnesium plays a critical role in numerous bodily functions, making it an essential part of any busy mum’s diet.

Magnesium is fundamental for maintaining muscle and nerve function, regulating blood sugar levels, and promoting healthy blood pressure. It also supports the immune system and contributes to bone health. For mums constantly on the go, magnesium’s ability to alleviate stress and improve sleep quality is invaluable.

This mighty mineral also aids in reducing symptoms of PMS and migraines, which can be particularly beneficial for women juggling multiple responsibilities. It helps in the production of energy within the cells, combating fatigue and ensuring that busy mums have the stamina needed to keep up with their hectic schedules.

Incorporating magnesium-rich foods into daily meals can be simple - leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale are excellent sources of magnesium and can be easily added to smoothies, salads, or stir-fries. Nuts and seeds, particularly almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds, are not only high in magnesium but also make for convenient, portable snacks.

Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and oats provide a magnesium boost and can be incorporated into breakfast bowls, side dishes, or main meals. Legumes, including black beans, chickpeas, and lentils, are versatile and can be used in soups, stews, or salads. Additionally, incorporating magnesium-rich fruits like bananas and avocados into the diet can enhance nutrient intake.

For those who find it challenging to meet their magnesium needs through diet alone, supplements can be a helpful alternative. However, it’s always advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

An unwanted souvenir from Africa

I recently had an amazing safari holiday in East Africa. I brought back some souvenirs, amongst them one I had not planned for – diarrhoea! Travellers’ diarrhoea is common and despite not eating any unpeeled fruit, not swimming, or using the spa, avoiding local restaurants and ice in drinks I still succumbed. Travellers’ diarrhoea occurs when a new bug is introduced to your gut and your insides don’t like the intruder. It’s defined as more than 3 watery stools in 24 hrs, often associated with gripey pains, sometimes a temperature and, less commonly, vomiting. Thankfully most cases, like mine, are mild or moderate and don’t interfere with the holiday plans and usually clear up in less than a week. Occasionally they are more severe. The figures show up to 60% of travellers to Africa will get symptoms.

So, what to do to avoid all this? The travelhealthpro.org.uk has good advice on general

hygiene and it is sensible to travel prepared with perhaps some rehydration sachets (dioralyte) and loperamide to control symptoms. About 1 in 20 people will need to seek medical advice and this is particularly wise in younger children and the elderly who are not managing to keep fluids down. If symptoms persist more than 3 days, the person has a temperature over 38 degrees, has blood or mucous in the stool or develops a rash then medical advice is advised.

Now there is the proverbial “long as your arm” list of the possible causes of persistent diarrhoea which includes various bacteria, a few viruses and even more parasites including those amoebae that most of us were made to draw at school. I am awaiting the result of a culture of my stool (I won’t go into the collection details) and then I will likely need an antibiotic to clear my unwanted guest.

They say travel broadens the mind. It can also affect the gut!

Community invited to monthlong celebration of friendship

Local friendship group, Oswestry Oddfellows, is gearing up for a month-long celebration of friendship and is inviting everyone to get involved.

The Oswestry Branch of the Oddfellows, which is made up of 250 mostly senior and retired members, has a number of events planned which are designed so people in the community can find out more about the society and experience the benefits of joining a local friendship group.

Vivienne Osborne, Branch Secretary at Oswestry Oddfellows, said, “There’s always such a buzz around our Friendship Month events and it’s brilliant to see new faces mixing with our existing members, sharing the joys of friendship.

“Socialising and companionship is so important. It’s no secret that spending a little time with friends

and getting to know new people can do us the world of good, no matter what else is going on in our lives.

“At the Oddfellows, we know a thing or two about friendship. We’ve been helping people to connect for more than 200 years. If you’d be interested in finding out a little more about us and meet some interesting and likeminded people in the process, make sure you get our Friendship Month events in your diary!”

The group’s Friendship Month events include a range of activities with a Beetle Drive on Saturday 7 September at 2.00pm and a Coffee and Cake Morning on Wednesday 11 September at 10.00am. Both of these events and many others are held at The Memorial Hall in Oswestry.

“If you’re interested in coming to one of our events but you can’t make

anything in Friendship Month, don’t worry because we’ve also got lots going on beyond September,” added Vivienne.

The Oddfellows is one of the oldest and largest friendly societies in the UK and aims to improve people’s lives through friendship and support.

Music, Food & Fun on Navy Day

On 5 March 1966, a group of ex-sailors from Oswestry came together and joined the Royal Naval Association. They formed a committee and so were commissioned into the association. The Oswestry branch has been running ever since and had its ups and downs. Having to change venues eight times, even weathering a drop in membership at one stage. This year is the 21st anniversary of the Oswestry branch.

However, things changed when the branch moved to The Fox Inn on Church Street, staying there for 12 years. They then moved to The Griffin Inn about 10 years ago where they still meet on the second Sunday of each month at 2pm. The branch hosts several social events throughout the year, such as Trafalgar night, Pickel night and the annual Navy Day fundraising event held at The Griffin each August bank holiday Sunday.

This year’s Navy Day is 25 August at 2pm in The Griffin’s courtyard and you’ll enjoy live music, a bar and food, plus fundraising activities.

The Navy Day event has been held every year for the last 20 (apart from lockdown). Both people and organisations have supported the Oswestry branch over the years, including amongst others, Gary and Carol from The Griffin Inn, Stonehouse Brewery, The Little Food Company, Duncan and Grace from the Bailey Head pub, W.E. Price, and I.Jackson & Sons. Members from

Capital Gains Tax Rollover Relief

Business Asset Rollover Relief also known as CGT Rollover Relief allows for deferral of Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on gains made when taxpayers sell or dispose of certain assets and use all or part of the proceeds to buy new business assets. The relief means that the tax on the gain of the old asset is postponed. The amount of the gain is effectively rolled over into the cost of the new asset and any CGT liability is deferred until the new asset is sold. Where only part of the proceeds from the sale of the old asset are used to buy a new asset a partial rollover claim can be made. It is also possible to claim for provisional rollover relief where the taxpayer expects to buy new assets but has not done so when the returns are made to HMRC. Interestingly, rollover relief can also be claimed if taxpayers use the proceeds from the sale of the old asset to improve assets they already own. The total amount of rollover relief is dependent on the total amount reinvested to purchase new assets.

There are qualifying conditions to be met to ensure entitlement to any relief. This includes

ensuring that new assets are purchased within three years of selling or disposing of the old asset (or up to one year prior to the sale). Under certain circumstances, HMRC has the discretion to extend these time limits. In addition, both the old and new assets must be used by your business and the business must be trading when you sell the old assets and buy the new assets. Taxpayers must claim relief within four years of the end of the tax year when they bought the new asset (or sold the old one, if that happened at a later date).

Watch out for misleading adverts promoting free samples of health products that lead to sneaky monthly payments of nearly £50. Facebook adverts promote free samples of health products but then shoppers find they have been charged for monthly subscriptions they didn’t recall signing up for.

Which? have received numerous complaints from shoppers about Bountynutrition and Nutranewera –and Trustpilot reviews show customers complaining of still being charged after cancelling the subscription, receiving only partial refunds, and getting no response from companies.

What can you do?

If you’ve been signed up for a subscription you didn’t want, you have a 14-day cooling off period, which is extended to 12 months if you weren’t informed of your right to cancel.

If the company refuses to reimburse you, you can make a chargeback claim to your bank if you paid via debit card, or you can use Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act and ask your credit card company to

disallow the payment. You have 120 days from the date of purchase to make a chargeback claim, but there’s no time limit for a Section 75 claim.

One way to avoid being charged for things you don’t want – or increases in monthly payments you weren’t aware of – is to get a card like Revolut that won’t allow a payment if there are insufficient funds in the account to cover it.

Before you buy, always check out companies online to see what other people are saying – these days, if someone has a problem – and the company does nothing to resolve it – then TrustPilot is an excellent way to complain – and it warns other people - so they don’t fall victim to the same scam.

Oswestry lawyer braves 150-foot abseil drop for charity

Dangling from a rope 150 feet above the ground is enough to send shivers down the spine for most of us - but dozens of brave souls took on the challenge to raise funds for the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

And one Oswestry lawyer enjoyed the experience so much she wants to do it again!

Miriam Homer, of Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, took part in the ‘Cliffhanger’ abseil challenge at the RJAH in Oswestry alongside other daredevils on 8 June.

Organised by the hospital’s League of Friends, the aim of the event was to raise funds for the Garden for Alice project, which is creating a safe space to promote healing and wellbeing for the paediatric patients on the Alice Ward.

Miriam, who raised more than £400 through sponsorship, was invited to tackle the 150-foot drop having previously volunteered for the League of Friends charity.

She said, “I was initially quite hesitant to take part in the challenge as I have never really done abseiling before, and I felt very nervous in the morning.

“After waiting for what felt like an eternity, I was

strapped into a crate and then I ascended to the top of the crane. It was very cold at the top, which just showed how high up we were.

“The hardest part of the challenge was initially stepping out of the crate. I had to lean backwards and then just push off and descend.

“I was able to control how fast I went down and I had thought that I would just want to get to the bottom as fast as possible, but I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The view was absolutely amazing, so I decided not to rush and to take it a bit more slowly.

“The applause and atmosphere when I reached the bottom was incredible, I would definitely do it again.”

Miriam is a personal injury lawyer at Lanyon Bowdler, working from the firm’s Oswestry and Shrewsbury offices.

She did it!

Think of sunny days by the sea, a cooling breeze, the taste of salty air and the gentle sound of waves in the distance. To bring this sunshine style into your home, employ essential elements that are inspired by the sea, shore and sky.

Chic colours

A bright yet calm vibe is the essence of coastal chic, and colour helps achieve this. Go all white, with whitewashed walls, white-painted woodwork and white furniture and fabric, or think pale paintwork with grey, beige and blue accents. Mid-blue is traditional but anything from pale blue to navy will work. Add touches of bold red for a nautical vibe, or yellow for that beachy feel. A softer, mustardy yellow looks great teamed with darker blues.

Stripey style

A stripe is essentially coastal, whether it’s a chic Breton stripe, a broad deckchair stripe or a narrower, more delicate stripe for a subtle pattern. Use them in table linens, cushion covers, crockery and more.

Natural textures

Driftwood is perfect, as are the natural tones of timber and stone, ceramic and rattan. Painted wooden wall cladding combined with some natural floorcoverings in seagrass, coir or jute gives gorgeous contrast.

Simple fabrics

Choose fabrics for their crisp or floaty feel –consider linen, muslin and ticking, plain or with a stripe. Think of heavy vintage grain sacks made into cushion covers, crisp cotton sheets and light voiles at the windows.

Light

and bright

Maximise window light with filmy curtains or whitepainted wooden shutters that fold back. Arrange artificial lighting so that the main light source is supplemented by a selection of wall, table and floor lamps, choosing shades that complement the look.

Shoreline accessories, from £6.99, giselagraham.co.uk.

Comfortable furnishings

Chairs and sofas should be ample and comfortable and in plain colours or subtle stripes in cotton, linen or even denim. Transform older pieces using slip covers in pale cream or white fabric, or a ticking stripe. In small rooms, furniture raised on legs rather than reaching all the way to the floor enhances the sense of space and light. Finally, add a scattering of cushions and throws.

Seaside accessories

Include some accessories, perhaps personal mementos from seaside holidays, or pieces that complement the overall look. House plants help bring nature indoors, and consider a few chunky woven storage baskets, a rope-framed mirror or a knotted-rope doorstop. A small ship’s wheel, anchor motif or model boat adds a nautical look. Use a clear vase or bowl filled with pebbles or sea shells, and perhaps add a piece of ethically sourced coral. Hang art featuring calming vistas of waves or beaches, beautiful pressed seaweed or prints of fish, coral or sea creatures. These finishing touches provide a serene interior in which to unwind and recharge.

A Shore Thing

This informal take on the classic coastal style draws inspiration from the shoreline with subtle references to the sea. A palette of sea inspired colours with an injection of unexpected pink brings a playfulness to the scheme. Look for organic materials in their natural form to keep it grounded and then add in an abundance of shell motifs and other coastal relevant touches. This style is less about the classic blue and white stripes, sea birds and sail boats and is much more focused on conveying a relaxed and playful coastal theme.

August in the garden

I seem to always start my column each month complaining about the weather. I wasn’t going to this time, but this summer has got off to a bad start. Cool and windy, with a short hot spell. Flowers and vegetables got off to a slow start and my chances of sitting and enjoying the garden have been few and far between.

With August fast approaching we should be preparing for the climax of the summer garden. It can be rather bittersweet as we know Autumn is hot on its heels. Seed sowing is still on the agenda with hardy annuals such as antirrhinum and nigella (lovein-a-mist), various salad leaves and winter greens on the list.

To make the summer flowering last as long as possible, keep up with dead heading. Once seed pods form, many plants stop producing

new flower buds. Especially sweet peas, it must become a daily task. Look around and start to think about what to change for next year. Are there gaps? Any plants outgrowing their location? Autumn or spring are the best times to move shrubs and perennials.

Also, take some time to think about any trained apples and pear trees. Careful pruning will ensure a good crop next season. Climbers such as Wisteria, Clematis and rambling roses will need some attention too before they take over the garden.

With some good weather, the soil will dry out quickly and your plants will need regular watering, especially those in pots. Hanging baskets are especially prone to drying out. Your water butts will probably be empty now, so try to save some grey water

from washing up and baths. Don’t forget the water for wildlife too.

The harvest should be in full swing now. Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas, courgettes, raspberries will be ready in large amounts. Preserves and freezing will save some for the winter, but if you do have excess think about donating to places like OsNosh, where they will be gratefully received.

UNDERSTANDING PENSION DRAWDOWNS

Are you approaching retirement and wondering how to make the most of your pension savings? If so, you may have considered taking some income from your pension – otherwise known as pension drawdown.

Here, Craig Roberts from Belgrave Wincham, shares a straightforward guide to understand if this could be the right option for you.

What are pension drawdowns?

Pension drawdowns are a way to access part of a defined contribution scheme while keeping the rest of your money invested.

Instead of buying an annuity (which gives you a fixed income for life), a drawdown means you can withdraw money from your pension pot flexibly, as and when you need it.

This can be a great option if, for example, you: plan to work part-time after retirement and only want to take out smaller sums initially, if you want to retire early and boost your income until your state pension kicks in, or if you want to use a lump sum for a special holiday or home improvements.

What are the pros and cons?

The biggest advantage is the flexibility with drawdowns allowing you to change the amount of money you take out whenever it suits you. If your investments perform well, you could also continue to increase the value of your remaining pension.

The flipside is that market values can of course go down too potentially leaving you with less money, and if you take out too much too soon you could run out of funds entirely. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to review and manage this regularly or to seek support from an independent financial adviser who can do this on your behalf.

Is it Right for You?

Understanding if a pension drawdown is right for you can be complicated. If you need advice on any aspect of planning for your retirement, our friendly team are here to help. To book a free consultation with one of our independent financial advisers call 01691 886554 today.

As executor of cousin’s Will, how can I ensure I have paid all his estate debts?

Q: I rarely saw my cousin in later years but am sole executor of his Will. He now has terminal cancer, so I will soon need to execute my duties. Because I know so little of his affairs, I am worried about knowing what, if any, debts he has that need paying, and how I can ensure I am not held personally liable if I miss any. It seems insensitive to ask him. What can I do?

A: As executor of your cousin’s Will, you will be legally responsible for his estate from his death to completion of its administration. You will need to determine the full value of his estate assets upon his death, including all financial assets, property and possessions. You will also need to establish what debts he has at that date.

If you are unsure what assets he had, you can order an asset search to help identify these. If you are not sure what debts he had, you can issue a Section 27 Notice which is essentially an advert to inform any potential creditors that the estate is going to be distributed. The s27 notice gives creditors two months to come forward and claim their interest in the estate. Any creditors who fail to come forward during this timeframe cannot then hold you as executor personally liable for any unpaid debt.

You may also need to pay inheritance tax, depending on the value of the estate and the reliefs available. This must be paid within six months of your cousin’s death to avoid interest accruing, along with any income tax and capital gains tax on for example profits from the sale of property or shares. If the estate is valued at over £5,000 you may need to apply for probate before dealing with the assets. If you find all this too daunting, you can engage a solicitor to handle it and charge their fee to the estate.
