Urgent appeal for volunteer van drivers Volunteer van drivers are needed by Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin. The local charity offers a free furniture collection service in Oswestry. But there aren’t enough volunteer drivers to go round. Volunteering for Age UK is rewarding and fun as Barry Church, 68, can confirm. He worked as a shift foreman for GKN Sankey and other local firms before retiring three years ago. “My retirement plan is to keep active, and as a driver or a porter you are kept very busy. The work is varied, and it’s not just about delivering and collecting furniture. For some of the older people we visit, we are the only people they’ll see all week, so we try to make time for a chat.” The Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin furniture shop raises vital funds for information and advice services for older people – unlocking millions in benefits and making sure the vulnerable receive the right advice. The Wizards of Os The Wizards of Os are a social support group for people living with dementia. For many people living with dementia it can be a rare and wonderful thing to meet people “in the same boat”, people who really understand, people who “get it”. Which is where groups like this come in. The Wizards of Os is one of hundreds of such groups across the country and part of a network called DEEP – the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project. Many of these groups meet informally in a local coffee shop, others will meet in a pub or a community centre or someone’s house. Some discover they have quite

Hope House are looking for energetic people to sign up to their sporting fundraising events as part of Team Hope House in 2020. The children’s charity is backing a range of events from half marathons to triathlons as well as organising their popular annual Cycle Challenge and their brand new Snowdon Sunrise Trek. Challenges are subject to registration fees and minimum sponsorship for each event entered. In return supporters will receive their free Hope House running vest, fundraising pack and support up to and on the day. If supporters have already registered for these events or wish to register for an event not listed, they can still become part of Team Hope House by committing to raise minimum sponsorship. Every week three local families face their biggest fear and their child dies, tragically Hope House can only afford to help one. GHP Legal has strengthened its expertise with the appointment of a paralegal advocate with a long time interest in human rights. Rhona Scullion joined the multi-disciplinary practice in November 2019. After graduating from the University of St Andrews in English and Modern History, Rhona was based in Hong Kong, Peru and the US for a number of years, working variously as an English teacher, journalist and copywriter before deciding to make a career change into law. She studied the Graduate Diploma in Law at Nottingham Law School, graduating top of her class with a distinction grade in 2016. The following year she passed her Bar Professional Training Course, also at Nottingham Law School. Rhona’s interest and expertise in human rights began after she completed the Bar Course and was awarded the Peter Duffy Human Rights Scholarship that enabled her to go and work at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, for three months. After returning to the UK in 2017 Rhona worked as a prison law adviser with a specialist Nottingham law firm where she gained a thorough grounding in all aspects of prison law and represented clients across England and Wales.

Carer’s drop in sessions A drop-in service has been launched at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) to help ensure that family carers receive the emotional and practical support they need. The Let’s Talk Local drop-in support sessions take place every Thursday afternoon, between 1pm and 3pm, in the Main Entrance at RJAH. Carers who attend one of the drop-ins will be able to ﬁnd out about the resources available to them, and identify ways they can be supported within the community. Information and resources will be available on a variety of topics, including emergency respite, practical support, befriending, peer support and much more. Paula Jones, Social Care Practitioner from Shropshire Council, will be on hand at the weekly sessions. Paula said: “Many people do not identify themselves as being a carer, they see it simply as being part of being a family member, spouse, partner, friend or neighbour. “It’s important that people recognise that helping to look after someone who could not manage otherwise, is caring, and by identifying themselves as a carer earlier, gives them the opportunity to ﬁnd out about the support available to them. “Many informal carers are not aware of what sort

of help is there for them and what a huge difference it could make to their lives.” The drop-in runs alongside the outreach support sessions, also held at the hospital every Thursday, for military personnel, veterans and their families. Happiness is the key Happiness is spreading across Oswestry and Shropshire in 2020, thanks to local woman Katie Millard. Katie who trained with Jo Howarth, founder of The Happiness Club, is a Happiness Trainer, specialising in delivering mindfulness-based Happiness Training to children in schools and groups. Katie delivers the training sessions one day per week for a period of four weeks in schools, followed by a teacher training session, then a follow-up parents session if required. So far local schools such as Morda CE Primary School, The Meadows Primary School, Woodside Primary School, West Felton CE Primary School, Bellan House (sponsored by Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings) and Our Lady & Saint Oswald’s Catholic Primary School have all hosted the training for their pupils. Katie is also now branching out into Powys and Herefordshire.

Katie says, “‘Children who are more emotionally resilient and happy are better equipped to deal with the stresses and strains of school, exams and the pressure of achieving good academic grades. “The techniques I teach the children can be used at any age, and are a real life skill. Another thing I really love about the training is that it is for every child who attends the school; it’s a whole-school approach, which makes it so special. “I’m really lucky to do what I do, I definitely never get that dreaded ‘Monday morning feeling’ when the new working week begins. I just love every minute of it, especially knowing the techniques make such a difference. My real mission is

to make Shropshire the happiest county in the UK!” Head teacher Karen Morris from The Meadows Primary School wrote of Katie’s visit to the school, “Katie is an amazingly positive person, who radiated happiness from the moment she walked into our school. Her energy and enthusiasm were inspiring and the children had great fun whilst learning some really useful techniques that will be beneficial to them now and in the longer term. 980 mile bike challenge In August 2020, Seymour Roberts and friend Ben are cycling 980 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats across 10 days. They are raising money for the Shooting Star cancer unit at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and Chirk Hospital in memory of Seymour’s wife. Sally was a patient at both hospitals before sadly passing away on 12 October 2017. Sally’s battle began in 2013 when she was diagnosed with cancer and her chemotherapy sessions were given at the Shooting Star Unit. Sally is described as having never complained during the years of pain and as a hero by her family. However, they were left desolate when after years of fighting through treatments and operations, she lost the battle. 8 | Oswestry life

During 2018 and in honour of Sally’s memory, Seymour and Ben were able to raise over £6,000 for the charities when they cycled from London to Cologne covering 352 miles. This time, they are set to cover an incredible 980 miles and with the support of Sally’s two daughters along the way, Fizz and Sally, they will work their way through this challenge. Most lenders will want to see your most recent 3 months bank statements. Make sure that your bank account is in good order; if you’re always breaching your overdraft limit, a lender may consider you to be living beyond your means. Having a well-managed credit card can be good for your credit record, but having a large balance, or missed/late payments can drag down your credit score, and make getting a mortgage trickier. Off the grid? Make sure that all of your documents (driver’s licence, bank statements etc.) are registered

Knees

Hip or groin pain – Soreness during or after exercise or pain that interferes with your daily activities could be a sign of hip arthritis. The pain is usually localised between your hip and knee. If the pain is lower down towards the ankle the problem might be caused by back problems. Some people find themselves relying on a walking stick or compensating with a limp. Others regularly take painkillers to deal with the pain. You don’t have to put up with it. If hip pain makes it hard to fall asleep or you wake up because of pain caused by your movements at night – talk to someone about it. There are a number of hip or joint-related issues that could be affecting your sleep. Stiffness - Difficulty putting your shoes or socks on is a common sign of stiffness in your hip, especially if one foot is more difficult than the other. If this is an on going problem, you should speak with a specialist. Hip pain when walking - If hip or groin pain is preventing you from walking normal distances for you, then speak to a specialist. For some, being able to walk comfortably to the postbox is sufficient. For others, not being able to complete a five-mile walk is unthinkable. It all depends on your lifestyle. The one leg test - If you can’t stand on your problem leg for longer than a minute – even with the support of a doorframe or table top for balance, then you might have a problem with your hip.

Pain with activity - Pain that comes on with activity and limits what you can do is a clear signal to seek help. Delayed pain - Pain doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks to be serious. Pain that comes on after activity, also known as ‘payback pain’, can be a warning that your knee isn’t performing as it should. Pain that interrupts sleep - If you find knee pain prevents you from falling asleep or you wake up because of pain caused by your movements during sleep – talk to someone about it. Visual changes - The way your knee looks can be just as important as the way it feels. Changes in the appearance of your knee can be a sign of inflammation. If your leg swells, or looks markedly different from the other then it may be time to speak with a specialist. Limited movement - Difficulty sitting down in a low seat such as in a car or cinema because your knee refuses to bend is a common sign of osteoarthritis. Seizing or catching of the joint during movement can also indicate advanced deterioration or that a loose bone fragment has become lodged in the joint.

We caught up with Oswestry BID this month to ﬁnd out exactly what it is they do in Oswestry and how our community is beneﬁtting. BID Manager Adele Nightingale, talks us through everything we need to know.

What is BID?

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are created by businesses and organisations. They come together to collaborate on initiatives that improve the location where they trade or do business. BIDs are driven by participating businesses, which work together to draw up a business plan, which is voted on and if agreed, is then funded through a levy based on business rateable values. They also try to lever in additional funding for investment into the delivery of projects for the beneﬁt of businesses. We underwrote the Christmas Night Bus with Arriva to ensure that people had a safe way to get in and out of town and employed two Taxi Marshalls on busy nights in December to organise the taxi rank, assisting taxi drivers and the general public. Aico In The Community Aico, the Oswestry-based market leader in domestic Fire and Carbon Monoxide protection, aims to help schools, colleges, charities and community organisations to achieve their goals and help build sustainable futures through the Aico in the Community initiative.

There has been a full year of fundraising by Aico, with team members taking part in a range of events and activities, all in aid of their charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. From a coastal hike to a fancy-dress Coracle Race and a variety of 10k challenges, the team have raised a total of £20,100 in 2019.

Education is a core area of the Aico in the Community initiative and throughout 2019, the team have supported local schools and colleges to help inform and inspire students. Aico attended events held by schools in the local area, such as the Hadley Learning Community careers fair in Telford and Sir John Talbot’s School STEMfest event in Whitchurch, to support students in making informed choices about their future career paths. Aico representatives offered students guidance and information about the apprenticeship programmes within the various departments at Aico and looked to inspire students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a fantastic charity that offers support to those affected by and living with cancer and campaigns for better cancer care. The Aico staff then got into the Christmas spirit in December and joined Santa on his sleigh visiting residents of Oswestry, organised by the Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club, helping to raise £7,300 for affiliated organisations in the

2020 Vision Award winning architectural designer Craig Marston of Shropshire-based Ke-design looks to the year ahead after marking yet another record-breaking year. Mr Marston, Ke-design founder said 2019 saw more jobs for his team than in any year in the 8-year history of the firm and sees 2020 maintaining the growth. “2020 has already been a busy start to the year with inquiries from the homeowners as well as developers. “For 2020 we expect to see more and more people wanting exciting designs, whether its new build or remodelling their existing home. “People are exposed to good design with the many house design TV programmes therefore the homeowner wants to live in a well planned house that suits their needs, as well as considering the external appearance or kerb appeal.” Due to cost and lack of building plots not everyone is

The results showed 98% of people would rather buy the modern/contemporary design of a home than the design of a property that is offered by many national developers. “We hope in 2020 that the developers will invest in good design and look into what the homebuyer’s wants. “Along with design, 2020 will see an increase in clients thinking about the impact the construction of their project will have on climate change. “The build technologies to minimise the construction project’s impact on the environment are there as well as being more energy efficient. As designers we promote alternative construction methods, but due to cost clients haven’t been able to embrace it. From the ground up with Graham Mitchell If you’re a garden lover, you will know that preparation can make all the difference to the end results across the summer months. If you’re a beginner, now is the time to start planning and gaining some knowledge too. Either way there’s no time like the present to get to grips with your garden. If you are lucky you may have an expert gardener in the family, or a neighbour to help you. Window boxes, hanging baskets or container gardening are so much fun, even if you don’t have a back garden. So, here’s a look at what needs doing in your garden or allotment in February.

The days are lengthening and there are some welcome signs of spring. Bulbs are appearing and thoughts turn to this year’s displays and crops. February is all about preparation and time spent now will reap rewards later in the season. Tidying the beds, removing debris and digging out perennial weeds like dandelions, will give you a good head start. It is a good time for transplanting shrubs and trees, whilst they are dormant, but avoid doing so if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. When it comes to pruning it’s worth having a good gardening book or checking online, as different plants have different requirements. Unfortunately, one method doesn’t fit all and you might end up spoiling this year’s growth. If the weather is a bit inclement, there is still plenty to do inside. Now is the time to clean and repair garden tools, and one of my favourite tasks is sorting out my seed packets. It’s a good time to 36 | Oswestry life

make sure you have all you need (and a few extra). Another handy tip is to sort the seeds in to sowing months. It will make sure you don’t miss the date and help get you organised. Don’t be tempted to sow too early though as the tender seedlings won’t be able to go out until after the last frost which will be later in May. I do make a few exceptions with early sowings. My sweet peas were sown in October and are now getting lovely and bushy on the windowsill, and I will get nice and early flowers when I plant those out. On the allotment, my broad beans were sown in the autumn. They survive the winter fine if you choose the right variety and will provide welcome fresh veg in the early summer. I also sow tomatoes in January and February, so I have good size plants to move to the greenhouse in May. If they get a bit “leggy” I just plant them deeply in pots, those

If you grow potatoes, now is the time to chit the “earlies”. Egg boxes make great stands and make it easy to keep an eye on them. With all seedlings, make sure you don’t over-water. An electric incubator is great, but an airing cupboard works just as well. As you look at the seed packets on the shelf, it is worth deciding how much space and how many plants you want. If you only want a few then buying plants or “plugs” later on in the season may make economical sense, as well as being less work. If you are a beginner watch out for plants that are biannual, that means they won’t flower the year they are sown, but the following year. Finally, it’s worthwhile making a plan for the planting. We all learned about crop rotation at school, and it is worth doing. It ensures that nutrients aren’t depleted and that diseases aren’t passed on year after year. In the garden, planning will ensure a good spread of colour across the summer and will mean that your prize display won’t be hidden behind taller vigorous plants at the front of the bed.

County Training has strong business links to kick-start careers As the new year starts, many young people are looking ahead to the summer and what they will do after school or college. County Training are urging young people to consider all options open to them in order to make an informed choice. Business Development Officer Nikki said “With the average graduate debt now standing at £50,000, according to the IFS, we are finding that many young people are starting to question if college or university is the right path. On an apprenticeship, young people can earn a wage while gaining the skills and knowledge they need to do their job. They will also gain a nationally recognised qualification, which is highly respected by employers.” Apprenticeships also work very well for businesses and the government will fund 95% of the qualification in most cases with some apprenticeships fully funded*. One business that has made full use of apprenticeships is Fix Auto in Oswestry, who over the years have taken on four apprentices with County Training. Managing Director, Lee Hitch said “Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right individual for the job, but County Training have made the process so much easier… all four individuals have proven

WREXHAM GLYNDWR UNIVERSITY TO HOST EUROPEAN DELEGATION Architectural Design Technology students from Wrexham Glyndwr University will host a European delegation later this year to examine the future of the growing eSports industry. The appetite globally for eSports – essentially, competitive computer gaming which is viewed by spectators – has grown hugely in recent decades and Glyndwr’s students have taken part in a Europewide Erasmus + project examining the kind of buildings the new industry will need – alongside students from France, Spain and Finland. Dr Colin Stuhlfelder, Programme Leader for Architectural Design Technology, said: “With the Spanish University of Murcia’s sports expertise, the University of Caen in France’s specialism in inclusivity, the University of Kajaani in Finland’s eSports lead, and WGU student’s design skills, the Erasmus+ project seeks to examine how eSports can be understood, expanded to a broad audience regardless of ability, and be regulated through a Europe-wide Ethical Charter - as well as a host of other considerations linked to engagement. “Our students at Glyndwr have been examining the design implications of housing gaming tournaments, as well as the associated requirements of eSports, such as training spaces, analytics facilities - and ensuring a public 44 | Oswestry life

The visit was the third of a series of Erasmus+ study trips which Architectural Design Technology students have taken part in as part of the pan-European electronic gaming industry project, and later this year, students from across Europe will be hosted at Glyndwr for the Welsh section of the project. In the past two years, the current final year Architectural Design Technology students visited Caen and Kajaani, and designed theoretical proposals for an eSports Centre for a site in Wrexham.

Colin added: “Their research and project development has now been handed over to the university’s current first year students, who will develop a new set of designs for the site, taking into consideration the lessons learnt by their predecessors. “These projects will be completed in May 2020, when the European partners will be visiting Wrexham for the next study trip. “We’ll continue working with colleagues across Europe on this project for the next year, with the current first year Architectural Design Technology students taking on the specific project – while I’ll be helping ensure that the project helps future students understand key real-world issues architectural design technologists face when optimising the layouts of eSports centres. Back in 2013 you may have been lucky enough to catch the delights of The Lunchbox, from Indian filmmaker Ritesh Batra. A gentle, romantic tale of mistaken identity set against the bustling backdrop of contemporary Mumbai. Director Batra has finally returned with his follow-up, Photograph, another romance inflected story, setting out to prove that tales of love are not exclusive to Hollywood rom-coms or the pen of Richard Curtis. Photograph tells the story of Rafi, a struggling, small time photographer making ends meet by snapping visiting tourists at Mumbai’s Gateway to India. Rafi’s grandmother is desperate for him to find a wife and has been looking for a bride for him. Wanting to fulfil his grandmother’s final wish, he convinces Miloni, a shy woman he’s just met, to pose as his fiancé. The pair then develops a connection that is unexpected and transformative. There are lots of movies about fake fiancés and partners than you can shake a stick at; think of Just Go With It starring Jennifer Aniston, or The Proposal with Sandra Bullock. There is indeed even a film called My Fake Fiancé! But the majority of these films are light, throwaway affairs at best. Photograph is a much quieter film that eschews any potential comedy of the set up for a gently transporting journey, bolstered by fine performances by its lead cast. So, a familiar tale transported to the streets of India and refreshed by great cast and thoughtful direction for all of us old romantics.

Liked this? Try While You Were Sleeping (1995) Perhaps the grandfather (or should that be grandmother) of fake ﬁancé movies, in which Sandra Bullock ﬁnds herself in a romantic entanglement after saving a man from being hit by a train. A timeless rom-com classic.

If you enjoy reading about real people and their life experiences, Memoirs of a Soldier in the Household Cavalry may be one for you as it captures the history of a military career of a local man. The author writes of his life in the Household Cavalry Regiment and focuses particularly on his National Service. This book gives an insight of how the regiment provided not only a guard to the monarch on ceremonial occasions but also how they defended a way of life. Jack Shortman originally wrote the book for his family but soon found a need to publish. Jack was born in 1937 in Shrewsbury and was raised by his aunt and uncle until he was 18 years old. He was just 18 when he had to sign up as a National Serviceman. Upon demobilisation, he settled in Oswestry, met his wife and after they were married he re-joined the Army in 1960.

These gorgeous dark chocolate truffles dipped in chia seeds are perfect as an indulgent treat and make a wonderful gift for your loved one. Ingredients 100g plain chocolate 40g coconut milk 25g Honey Roasted, Salted Caramel or Warm Cinnamon Munchy Seeds Chia seeds for dipping Method 1. Finely chop the chocolate and place it in a microwaveable bowl. 2. Crush the Munchy Seeds with a rolling pin and add to the chocolate. 3. Heat the coconut milk for about 25 seconds until hot, but not boiling – pour over the chocolate mix, cover and wait for a few minutes. 4. Give the mixture a stir. If some of the chocolate has not yet melted, heat in the microwave for 10 second bursts until you have a smooth mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight. 5. Spoon out small amounts of mixture and shape into balls. Then dip these in the chia seeds to coat. 6. Put back in the fridge for an hour to chill. 52 | Oswestry life

Vegan Millionaire’s Shortbread

These are just as rich and indulgent as a standard version and may hit the button if you’re trying the meat free road with your partner. Ingredients 150g dairy free spread 125g golden caster sugar 220g plain flour 400g soft pitted dates, chopped 100g cashew nuts 125ml almond drink 100% virgin coconut oil 100g vegan dark chocolate To make the shortbread: 1. Line a 20cm square tin. Beat together spread and sugar with an electric whisk until pale and creamy, then add flour. Beat again until just combined. Spread out evenly over base of the tin, prick all over with a fork. Chill in fridge for 30 mins. 2. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees/ fan 180 degrees/Gas 6. Once shortbread is chilled, bake for 25 mins until firm and golden. Leave to cool. To make the caramel: Place dates, cashew nuts and almond drink in food processor, whizz for 2-3 mins until very smooth. Add coconut oil and

whizz to combine. Spread mixture over cooked base, then transfer to the fridge for 3 hours to set. For the topping: Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water (don’t allow it to touch the water). Pour over the caramel and spread evenly. Return to the fridge for a further 2 hours to firm up. Slice in to 16 squares.

Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 900g beef mince 2 onions, roughly chopped 4 sticks celery, diced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 level tbsp. plain flour 150ml beef stock 1 tsp caster sugar 3 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp chopped thyme 2 x 400g chopped tomatoes 12 sheets lasagne 75g mature chedder, grated White sauce 50g butter 50g plain flour 750ml hot milk 2 tsp Dijon mustard 50g parmesan, finely grated

method Preheat the oven to160C/325F/ Gas 3. Heat a large frying pan until hot, add the oil. Cook the mince until browned. Remove from the heat and transfer to a plate. Add the onion, celery and garlic to the pan and cook until softened. Return the meat to the pan and stir in the flour. Add the stock, bring to the boil. Add the sugar, tomato purée and thyme, then stir well. Stir in the canned tomatoes. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer in the oven for 1½ hours, or until the beef is tender.

Method Preheat the oven to full whack. Lightly grease 2 ovenproof ramekins or small baking dishes with a little oil. Prepare your chosen filling – roughly chop the spinach, quarter the tomatoes, finely chop the chives or slice the mushrooms. Place your chosen filling into the prepared ramekins, crack a couple of eggs on top and season with salt and pepper. Place in the hot oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, then serve straight away. 2.3 litre/4 pint shallow ovenproof dish. Spoon one third of the white sauce on top. Arrange one layer of lasagne sheets on top. Spoon half of the remaining meat sauce on top and then half of the white sauce. Put another layer of lasagne sheets on top, then the remaining meat sauce and remaining white sauce. Sprinkle over the cheddar cheese. Preheat the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Cook in the middle of the oven for about 45 minutes- or until golden brown on top, bubbling around the edges and the pasta is soft.

For the white sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the flour, cook over the heat for one minute. Gradually whisk in the hot milk until thickened. Add the Dijon mustard and parmesan cheese and season well with salt and pepper. For the lasagne, put one third of the meat sauce in the base of a Oswestry life | 53

What you need to do is weigh them up to see which way offers the most advantages, based on your and your partners’ needs. Forming a limited company is what is known as ‘incorporation’. A limited company is recognised as a separate legal entity and as such carries with it limited liability. Subject to fraud and /or misrepresentation, you would not be held personally liable for any of the ﬁnancial losses made by the company. One of the most important issues is to ensure that the incorporation is tax effective. As there is clearly going to be more than one shareholder in your case, you will need to have an appropriate shareholders’ Agreement in place. This may involve amending your company’s current articles of association. It is worth bearing in mind that the structure of a limited company is much more complex than the collection of rights and duties which constitute a partnership. You should take advice from a lawyer experienced in company and commercial matters as to whether you have the right corporate structure. The 14 February might be the traditional day of the year to give away your heart but to thousands of patients across the globe there are 365 days to do just that! This month’s article is about organ donation and the law around this is just about to change, at least for those of us on the English side of the border anyway. In 2015 the Welsh Assembly introduced an optout system for organ donation and this has been very successful and so, from Spring 2020 we are planning to catch up and do the same on this side of Offa’s Dyke. What does this mean? Up to now we have had to opt in to donate our organs and carry on organ donor’s card or register our willingness to be a donor. Very soon it will be the law that we are all opted in unless we have, well, opted out! More than 400 patients died last year waiting for organ donation and we currently only meet just over half of the need – how would we all feel if one of those 400 was a relative of ours? Your heart is an amazing muscle – every day it beats more than 100,000 times, pumping something like 2000 gallons of blood, and it only weighs about 350 grams (12oz for the older ones of us). Just imagine trying to use any of your other muscles like this – and no rest either! It is one of nine organs than can be transplanted. The ﬁrst heart transplant was in 1967. More than 9 out of 10 heart transplant patients live for more than a year and some decades – the longest so far for 33 years! What a gift of life that heart was? I met a number of patients with donated kidneys, livers and hearts (I did not meet any with lungs, small bowel or pancreas transplants – and that completes the nine). Many were young adults living normal lives. Fifty years ago they would have died. Advances in managing organ rejection have improved their outlook and quality of life enormously. I am registered on the Organ donation site – are you? You can opt in before the law changes – and opt out if you wish too. The website www.organ donation.nhs.uk has the details and you can also ring 0300 123 23 23. The site allows you to restrict which organs you wish to donate and add other comments too.

“January brings the snow, Makes our feet and fingers glow. February brings the rain, Thaws the frozen lake again.” I think Sara Coleridge’s weather predictions are as accurate as mine as I sit writing this piece. We have had occasional heavy snowfall in Oswestry over the last few years, but we have no idea when abouts in winter it will come. So this month I thought I’d share some photos from around Oswestry, taken when the white stuff has appeared. Now I am retired I tend not to drive too far in those conditions, but we have plenty of great locations to visit close-by. It is surprising how the snow adds new patterns and perspectives to a well-loved view. Just walking around town provides a lot of subject matter, especially when the sun makes an appearance. The Hill Fort gives great snowy panoramas, as does the Coppie and Shelf Bank. However, for a photographer there are some extra considerations at this time of year. Snow is obviously wet, and it is so easy to get water in to your camera and lens if you are out when it is

snowing. I use some special covers which are not 100% user friendly but do the job. If you are in town you will probably keep popping into shops to warm up. I do. Cold camera + warm moist atmosphere = condensation on your lens, resulting in blurry pictures. Finally, the brightness of the snow will affect your images. Most cameras have special settings but I still find that I must make adjustments off-camera to fix colour casts and make sure the pictures are balanced. Oswestry life | 61
