What an end to the year we had as a town. A Christmas parade to remember, Christmas Live and Santa flying in to visit streets across town. Despite the brutal cold, the events were a success and our first issue of the year will not disappoint in recounting those and more. Meet the owner of a doggy daycare (page 19), can you volunteer to help school children learn to read (page 32) and Griffiths Hire have a new training centre in town for those with an interest in construction (page 51). Something for everyone! On behalf of the Oswestry Life team, we wish you all a Happy New Year.

Aico Christmas card design winner

Local news

Wow, what a Christmas parade

Oswestry’s big Christmas Parade was certainly an event to remember with a record number of floats and bumper crowds lining the streets. In the words of Borderland Rotary President, Andy Boroughs, “It’s what wonderful memories are made of.” The parade had over 50 floats this year and the festive level was off the 1 scale with the streets thronged with merrymakers cheering and clapping as each vehicle went past and the children on the floats giving it their all, singing, dancing, and throwing treats to the expectant crowds. Andy Boroughs continued, “It made me very proud to be a small part of this great endeavour and I was blown away 2 by the enthusiasm of everyone involved – the clubs, the companies, the children and of course all the people who turned out and gave so generously. I do want to thank Olly Rose, Oswestry Town Mayor, for working with me to choose the winning floats but I have to say, every float should have won a prize.” Lots of work goes into organising such a large event and few work harder to make it happen than Jonathan Jones who leads a great team from Borderland Rotary Club and beyond. The winning floats were: Best Youth – Dance School of Rock (1); Best commercial – Dapper Dogs (2); Best non-commercial – Hope House (3); ; Best children’s – Border Counties Gymnastics (4); Best walking group – Oswestry in Bloom (5) 3

forward to watching them progress throughout the rest of the season. Come on lads!”

Oswestry-based Aico were delighted to call upon pupils of Moreton Hall Prep School again this year to design their company Christmas card for the third successive year. Alex Garmston, Marketing Manager at Aico said, “We want to say a massive thank you to the pupils of Moreton Hall Prep School for their entries into this year’s Christmas card competition – the designs we received were fantastic and full of creative flair, it made choosing the winning design very difficult. However, there can only be one winner and our Managing Director chose the design by Anna Chabent. We loved the Christmas message on the design and the use of colour that really brought the design to life. We really enjoyed viewing the selection of entries. A massive well done to everyone who entered.”

White Ribbon Stall Success On Wednesday 22 November, Oswestry Town Council demonstrated its support of White Ribbon Day by hosting a White Ribbon market stall by the Guildhall. The stall welcomed local supporters including West Mercia Women’s Aid, Os Nosh, Cae Glas Cricket Club, Be a Better Fish, West Mercia Police, Oswestry Library, Shropshire Council, The New Saints Football Club and many local residents. Market traders also got involved and stall holders proudly wore white ribbons throughout the day to raise awareness of this important campaign. Oswestry Town Council is a ‘White Ribbon’ accredited organisation, which is a global initiative whose mission is to prevent violence against women and girls by addressing its root causes. Football club and its charity support food bank appeal Oswestry football club, The New Saints FC, and its charity have joined forces with the Oswestry and Borders Foodbank to boost donations in the lead up to Christmas. The football club and The New Saints FC Foundation have set up a foodbank drop-off area at the home ground in Park Hall to allow fans and other members of the public to make both food and cash donations to the foodbank. The foodbank donation boxes at the Park Hall Stadium are open from 9am to 5pm during the week as well on match days. Liz Jermy, manager of the Oswestry and Borders Foodbank, said that the football club and foundation were providing a key venue at which the public could make donations. “We are just really pleased that the football club and foundation have taken up the foodbank message and are helping us raise awareness of the increase in need,” she said. Simon O’Reilly, the club’s stadium and facility manager said the club’s top players would deliver the donated food and cash to the foodbank depot. “When Oswestry and Borders Foodbank approached me to see if we could provide any help with generating donations, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. To be able to support the charity with donations in this way in the lead up to Christmas is so important to us as a team,” he said.

Gill Jones of TNS FC Foundation said that the foodbank was doing a remarkable job in the community. “The drop-off point at the stadium is not only increasing the scope for donations from the public, but it’s also helping to raise the profile of this important charity. We were delighted to help with its work,” she said. The foodbank is particularly keen to receive donations of tinned fish, tinned meats, crisps, Pot Noodles, tins of fruit, packaged cakes and puddings, biscuits, chocolate, sweets, jelly, tinned custards and rice puddings, savoury biscuits, pickles, nuts, instant coffee, tea bags, toiletries including soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and nappies. It cannot accept alcohol or homemade food. Pictured: Helen Missen of Oswestry and Borders Foodbank and Gill Jones of The New Saints FC Found

Campaigns for 2024 By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire As the largest town in my constituency, I spend a lot of time in and around Oswestry, speaking to local residents and attempting to represent them in Parliament. Now two years into representing our area – a place I am proud to call home – I have learned a lot. It now seems a long time ago we were out trudging round in December frost back in 2021 with the nation’s media following the campaign closely! It feels like we are making progress on some of the big issues, but I am under no illusion there is a lot more to be done. Our campaigning on health services saw a £21.4 million investment and 52 extra beds this winter at Shrewsbury and Telford. Taking a grown-up approach to the Hospitals Transformation Scheme will also access more funding and reduce wait times for people in Oswestry. But for a town still reeling from losing the cottage hospital, this isn’t going to be a

10

| Oswestry life

magic bullet – GP provision, social care, and the state of our hospitals are still well below what people deserve. In 2024, I will be continuing that campaign with renewed zeal. Similarly, on the cost-of-living crisis, a lot of people in North Shropshire have really struggled. Those living off-grid in larger, harder to heat rural houses have had a terrible time, with energy support taken up by far fewer people than need it. Going around Oswestry knocking on doors, the number of families and pensioners I speak to who are clearly bracing for the worst on bills this Christmas is quite upsetting. This should be a priority for the Government going into the winter months. As a final thought, though we are faced with many issues, this is still a wonderful constituency and Oswestry a wonderful town. People are kind and welcoming and look out for one another. I hope I have done the good people here justice, representing them and speaking up on the issues that impacted all of us in 2023, and look forward to the same in 2024.

SHELFY’s Honour – You’ll Never Ride Alone One local mountain biker, Lee Williams, is training to take on a tough challenge to raise money in memory of his friend, Shelfy, who passed away in May 2023. It was 25 years ago, that Lee started working with Kev, who became known as Shelfy. Lee explained, “I was forced to retire from football and kickboxing through injuries. I had started worrying about my weight and well-being, so Shelfy. said ‘come mountain biking with me!’ He gave me his spare bike and off to Llandegla we went, and I was hooked. We would ride all over the place Betws-Y-Coed, Builth Wells, Coed-y-Brenin and the Lake District. I eventually showed him local rides to Oswestry and here we hooked up with more local riders and he fast became a very popular chap and made some more lifelong friends. “Kev and I were laid off from work, so we both went self-employed. We continued to work together for a few years when he decided he would rather go back to working for someone. Kev went to Wrexham university as a maintenance engineer and he stayed there. He loved it at the university, with his fantastic new crew. And of course, he was a very popular member of the team. He loved nothing more than going for a pint with my brother and the gang, bless him.” Sadly, late on in 2022, friends received the devastating news of Shelfy having cancer. All felt it was a huge blow to such a lovely man, and he lost his brave battle with the horrible disease in May this year, at the age of 52.

Kev ‘Shelfy’ pictured by Lee Williams

As a fitting tribute in his honour, Lee has very special permission, to hold a 24hr Mountain Bike Challenge around OnePlanet Adventure in Llandegla As a fitting tribute in his honour, Lee has very special permission, to hold a 24hr Mountain Bike Challenge around OnePlanet Adventure in Llandegla, on the 1st anniversary of his passing: 16-17 May 2024. Lee has the backing and blessing of Kev’s family, the Hanmer’s of Wem, who will be present on the day to show their support. Lee is hoping they may even do a lap with him. “All proceeds go to Severn Hospice and some to Macmillan, who both took wonderful care of our dear friend in his battle. I’m now in training for this challenge and I’ve a very special team to help me in my journey. I need all the help I can get! Michelle Bowen sports therapist based in Wrexham, will be on hand for any issues that may arise and will keep me in shape whilst I’m in training. Local MTB legend, Dave Griffiths of Dave Griffiths cycle coach, is very kindly helping me with a program to prepare me for this challenge. Strength and conditioning,

and cycling training, and hopefully Dave will do a few laps with us,” Lee explained. “Another local MTB legend, James Martin of Llansantffraid, will be riding with me on the day. Lewis of LJ-Tech Services has really helped me by setting up all the social media and Just Giving page. Alan Lewis of Adrenaline Sports is also being a great support and has vast experience with this sort of challenge. I’m in very good hands! My sister Lisa Humphrey’s is providing medical cover on the day and my wife Mandy is helping me with all the organising and keeping me motivated. I have to say a big thank you to Badger of OnePlanet for helping me out with all this and allowing me to do this challenge. If you are able to help me support Severn Hospice and Macmillan in any way, I would be so grateful.” Lee is also welcoming fellow mountain bikers to join him during his challenge. The team will be accepting cash donations on the day at the track. To donate, visit www.justgiving. com/page/shelfyshonour24 or go to the Facebook page @Shelfy’s Honour.

Charlotte makes the semi-finals of slimming competition Charlotte Foster was one of just 44 women to win a place at the semi-finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2023 competition after losing an inspirational 7st 4.5lbs. The competition was to find the UK and Ireland’s top female slimmers. Charlotte, who slimmed from 17st 1lbs to 9st 10.5lbs, made it to the semi-finals after members of the Oswestry Slimming World group voted for her to go forward to the semi-finals at Slimming World’s head office in Derbyshire. She said, “Before I joined Slimming World I was at a loss with what to do about my weight, I was self concious and often unhappy but I didn’t know where to start. I found Slimming World after a friend posted how well he was doing at his local group on his social media and decided to give it a go. “I didn’t know at the time, but I can honestly say now that it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My eyes were opened to a new way of eating that fits easily around my life and I felt in control for the first time ever. What made it even easier was that I could still enjoy the same meals as my friends and family. Old favourites like curries, steak and chips and Sunday roasts are all still on the menu.

“My Slimming World group and Consultant Claire have been amazing. I’ve picked up so many tips, everyone is full of ideas and advice, and their belief in me really helped me to believe in myself and my own ability to make a change. “As time went on I started Couch to 5k. I now regularly run half marathons and I’m a leader at my local running club ‘Run Chums’. Slimming World has completely changed my life.” Oswestry group meets at Eastern Oswestry Community Centre on a Monday or Saturday. Call Claire on 07882 174539.

For the love of dogs Sarah Newey is the proud owner of Whittington based, Tails and Trails Doggy Day Care. Also the owner of two lovable dogs herself, the story of how she found her passion for dogs was unforeseen but encouraging. Before starting this wonderful adventure, Sarah was in the British Army - serving as a Combat Medic all over the world. “After leaving the military I retrained as a teacher but found it very hard to settle post military. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the only thing I found real comfort in was dogs. Dogs have been a constant throughout my life so I took a bit of a leap of faith and started a business which meant I could be around dogs all day - Tails and Trails was born.” Doggy day care is a service that allows dogs to be in a safe and secure environment, living their best life, whilst you are at work. Sarah has great plans for 2024, looking to organise breed meets and even puppy socialising. Sarah’s goals behind the business revolve around the animals she is caring for. “I’m running Tails and Trails because I genuinely love to be around dogs. I have a small daily number of dogs which gives me the time to get to know them, to know and understand their personalities and to add all the small touches to the service. I wanted to create something different, not just an outside play space but an indoor area that was stimulating but at the same time relaxing.” Sarah updates social media with the daily doggy adventures, which is a nice touch for owners. As an absolute dog lover, she wants to ensure customers receive the service that as a dog parent, Sarah would want to receive herself.

Christmas Time

With Christmas on the horizon, Sarah has some important advice for dog owners, to make sure everyone is happy this season. “It’s a time for celebrating with those you care about and your pups are hopefully at the heart of this. Giving them a stocking to open, adds some fun and can help them feel loved and relaxed. There’s a lot going on at Christmas, so giving your dog some downtime away from the chaos is important too. “Remember not all Christmas lunch foods are suitable for their tummy’s, so be sure to check before letting them loose on all the trimmings. Above all - remember not to not leave the pigs in blankets too close to the edge of the table!” Sarah offers a discount for multiple dogs from the same household. Get in touch via email

BOOK REVIEW EDITOR’S CHOICE

OF THE MONTH

Stick Man BY JULIA DONALDSON

Baby Done (15) AVAILABLE ON IPLAYER OR TO RENT OR BUY New Zealand comic actor, Rose Matafeo, has had a great few years in the UK with her charming BBC sitcom ‘Starstruck’ picking up great acclaim, and an appearance on ‘Taskmaster’ raising her profile further. She’s a warm and engaging comic and stand up, and also the star of this month’s film choice, the surprisingly funny and good-natured NZ rom-com ‘Baby Done’. When tree surgeon Zoe (Matafeo) discovers she is pregnant, she’s scared her old fun life is over, so in a state of denial, she continues partying and living life to the full. As her due date approaches, her denial gets more extreme and funnier, balanced by her partner Tim’s more serious approach to parenthood. Zoe’s refusal to accept reality makes for some wonderfully comic moments in a film shot through with heart and charm, but not averse to veering into slightly more serious territory, before quickly veering back into comedic territory. When Zoe sums up other people’s lifestyles as “Married, house, baby, done,” it’s done without malice, typical of a likeable and warm film anchored by Matafeo’s performance. Matthew Lewis, familiar to Harry Potter fans but now all grown up, plays Tim as an equally likeable everyman. It’s got great lines, great performances, and a sense of sunshine that we could all do with at this time of year, it’s basically New Zealand in film form, so go pay it a visit. By Michael Hudson

Although this is a Christmas story, Stick Man is one that lives on throughout the year for children. Stick Man is a story of realising what’s missing when it’s not there and of the importance of the love of a family. Without giving away the whole story, Stick Man gets lost after a sequence of random events and his quest is to get back to his family. Children love this story and with an endearing ‘stick’ as the main character, it’s a winner if you are looking for something to read time and time again. It’s also a chance to relive the magic of Christmas. But it doesn’t end there, Stick Man the film is available on Amazon Prime and the character soft toy is just as fun.

Strawberry & blueberry crumble The ‘secret ingredient’ of marzipan in the simple crumble topping is delicious spooned over fresh fruity strawberries and blueberries in this comforting winter pudding. Serves 4 | Preparation time 15 minutes | Cooking time 20-25 minutes

IngredIents

• 1 tsp cornflour • Juice of 1 medium orange • 450g strawberries, hulled, halved or quartered depending on size • 200g blueberries • 40g caster sugar For the crumble topping • 100g plain flour • 40g caster sugar • 50g butter, diced • 75g marzipan, coarsely grated • Finely grated rind of half an orange To serve • Vanilla ice cream

30

| Oswestry life

method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. 2. Mix the cornflour and orange juice in the base of a medium saucepan. Add the strawberries, blueberries and sugar to the pan then cook over medium to low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring until the berries begin to soften slightly. Spoon into 4 x 250ml individual ovenproof dishes. (If you don’t have individual dishes, make the crumble in one large dish and bake for 30-35 minutes.) 3. To make the crumble, add the flour, sugar and butter to a mixing bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips or an electric mixer until it resembles fine crumbs. Stir in the marzipan and orange rind. 4. Spoon the crumble over the fruit and bake for 20-25 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and the juices are bubbling around the edges. Keep an eye on the crumble as the marzipan can brown quickly, so loosely cover the top with foil if needed. 5. Serve with scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Volunteering

Volunteers needed to spread the joy of reading in Shropshire schools Children’s literacy charity Schoolreaders, is looking for more volunteers who can help spread the joy of reading to children in primary schools across Shropshire, particularly in Market Drayton, Shewsbury, Telford and Oswestry. Every year, 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard.. Schoolreaders recruits volunteers to listen to children read in primary schools, focusing on schools where children require the most support. Volunteers are asked to listen to children read once a week in term time and to commit to an academic year. 95% of children supported by a Schoolreaders volunteer improve their reading age. Partner schools also reported that volunteers had a positive impact on pupils with 95% improving their reading confidence and 87% their reading enjoyment. Additionally, children benefit enormously from the volunteers as positive role models in the classroom. Jane Whitbread, founder of Schoolreaders, commented, “Children who leave primary school unable to read well can’t access their secondary schooling fully which will compromise their life opportunities. One in seven adults in England (7.1 million) are functionally illiterate and cannot read instructions on a medicine label, sit a driving theory test or fill in a job application form. Working together we can change this. “Our Schoolreaders volunteers provide a crucial supplement to classroom teaching and are welcomed by schools and the children. If more children gain pleasure from reading from an early age and their reading fluency and confidence improves too, communities and society will reap the benefits.” Sheena, retired, and a Schoolreaders volunteer, explains her experience, “For me, establishing a rapport with each child and recognising their uniqueness by making the sessions relevant and fun is what counts and the earlier we can do this the better. “Reading skills and developing a love of books from 32

the earliest age will aid children to become confident, interested and engaged readers who read for pleasure. I thoroughly enjoy my time listening to readers and look forward to returning to school after half term.” We asked a Headteacher at a partner primary school what they thought of Schoolreaders. She said, “What the Schoolreaders volunteers offer us is quality of time with reading that we simply cannot offer ourselves. It’s more than just a volunteer. It’s a unique role. It’s someone we have a relationship with, perhaps from a different generation. It’s another adult, who is not their teacher, not their parent, who they can experience in a really positive way. They can share thoughts and ideas with them when, frankly, teachers or parents simply cannot always make the time.” To find out more about Schoolreaders, and apply to be a volunteer, visit www.schoolreaders.org. By applying now new volunteers will be matched as quickly as possible to a partner school once they have completed a mandatory DBS check and virtual safeguarding training.

New support group for adults bereaved by suicide SoBs Oswestry is a new peer support group in Oswestry for adults bereaved by suicide. The group meets between 7-9pm, every third Wednesday of the month and is free to attend for any adult bereaved by suicide. The group provides non-judgemental, confidential, and empathic peer led support. The volunteers, Anne, Betty, and Alex, have all experienced loss by suicide. Their individual and collective experiences led them to start the group to offer a supportive place for others in similar situations. The group aims to reduce the isolation and harmful stigma many people experience in the aftermath of suicide. Sadly, more than 6000 people take their own life each year in the UK. The lasting impact on their families, friends and communities can be devastating. Losing someone to suicide often leads to complex grief highlighted by strong feelings of guilt, self-criticism, and questioning. As group facilitator, Anne said, “We hear the question ’why’ all the time. Personally, it took years to accept I wouldn’t have this question answered and to learn to live with not knowing. That’s one reason we are setting up the group, so that people can have a supportive place where they can ask these questions. We are all in the same boat but there is hope, the boat is going somewhere. You’re not stuck, even when you feel stuck.”

38

| Oswestry life

“There’s unfair stigma associated with suicide,” added group facilitator, Betty. “This can make it difficult to talk about honestly, about what is going on below the surface - we want to change that. We want people to have the opportunity to speak without fear of judgement because isolation is a huge problem for people bereaved by suicide, especially for those caring for others who are bereaved too. People need a place to be honest about their feelings and at the group we don’t judge, we understand how complex their grief process is because we’ve lived it too.” With hundreds of thousands of people in the UK affected by suicide, the effects are far reaching, affecting more than loved ones but work colleagues, first responders, and community members too. “It’s like a pebble dropped in a pond,” said group facilitator, Alex. “The ripples spread out, touching so many aspects of life. We tend to think it ends with the immediate family, but not always. It’s traumatic and the pain flows down generational lines. Emotional, psychological, and financial health can take a hit for generations to come. It’s essential people get the support they need and deserve.” Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBs) are the only UK-based organisation offering this kind of peer-led support to adults impacted by suicide loss. They support individuals in the immediate aftermath, years that follow, and even generations afterwards with peer led groups, email support and a nationwide support line. Peer support can fill a gap professional support can’t,” explained Anne. “Sometimes you just need to offload without fear of what someone will think. That’s why peer support is so important because we’ve all been through it. Even though everyone experiences their grief differently, there are certain things about bereavement by suicide that we all share. Loss by suicide is a unique experience not everyone understands and finding people who understand from personal experience really matters.” The common goal of all the volunteers is clear, SoBs Oswestry want to give hope back to those who have lost it. “If you would like to join us but are worried about taking the next step, please reach out,” said Betty. “You can email or ring. There’s never any pressure to attend every group, you can come and go at your own pace.” If you would like to join the Oswestry SoBs support group, please email oswestry@sobs.org. The start of a new year often brings with it grand resolutions, particularly in the realm of health and fitness. However, the key to lasting well-being might just lie in the beauty of small, consistent changes. For many individuals who have been on a hiatus from regular exercise, the prospect of diving headfirst into intense workouts can be daunting and, in some cases, counterproductive. HEALTH

When I was a medical student in the 1970s, I remember being told 2000 women were dying of cervical cancer every year – and most of those quite young women many under 45 years old and some in their 20s. Today the figure is more like a third of this number and the NHS now feels able to announce the aim of eliminating the disease by 2040. I think that is amazing. What has happened? Cervical cancer, usefully, has a pre-malignant phase. That is where changes happen in the cells, which can be detected on a smear, that are NOT cancer. This was quite a common misconception in patients who thought these were “cancer” smears. These changes happen quite slowly so, once detected, they can be closely watched and treated, if necessary, to prevent the cancer occurring at all. The price the woman has to pay is regular smears - not pleasant at all but they won’t kill you! the NHS now The second big feels able to development was the HPV vaccine – announce the aim Human Papilloma of eliminating Viruses are the major the disease by cause of cervical cancer (99%) and 2040. I think that this vaccine was is amazing. What introduced in 2008. has happened? Initially it was just for girls age 12 or 13 but now for boys too and since its introduction the rate of HPV infection has fallen by 86%. Yet again vaccination is proving what a major health improvement tool it can be. So, I slightly hesitate to describe what symptoms a woman can expect to have for two reasons: firstly, every woman should pluck up her courage and have smears from the age of 25 onwards regardless of any symptoms. Secondly, the pre-malignant condition, called CIN or Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (you can see why it’s shortened!), usually causes no symptoms. Having said that any unusual vaginal bleeding or pain or discharge should prompt a consultation with your doctor or nurse. A cancer that is preventable – that’s a Happy New Year message!

Healthy Focus

Time for a change

Avoid failure and go small if you’re setting health related New Years’ resolutions! lifestyle contributes to around 70% of chronic illness such as diabetes and heart disease. These illnesses are avoidable and can even be reversed if we can change our behaviour, even a little. However, change can be hard and researchers have shown that only 19% of individuals keep their resolutions beyond mid January. one way to make lasting change is to start small – The British society of lifestyle Medicine (www.bslm1change.org) of which I am a certified practitioner member, recommends #1change with the TBC approach: Trigger – Choose something you commonly do daily e.g. brush teeth. Behaviour – Think of something you want to change – e.g. do push-ups. start with one just to establish the habit. every time you brush your teeth, do a push-up! Celebrate – pat yourself on your back every time you “brush and push”, and share your success with your friends. setting a goal can really help focus the mind, why not check out adrenaline sporting events line up for next year and sign up for a cycling or running event around oswestry? Visit www.adrenalinesportingevents.co.uk. The soma space in oswestry Memorial hall was founded by personal trainer Jo hazell-watkins and psychotherapist Kevin Braddock MBaCp. They offer group and individual movement sessions combining strength training and exercise with mental health education to assist individuals and groups in building, enhancing and maintaining all round mindand-body wellbeing. Visit www.thesoma.space. want to get more active? Contact one of the gyms locally – Zest, Core, active8, evolution or the leisure Centre – but remember to start small! stopping smoking is a common resolution – social prescribers based at your Gp practice can help as can the nhs Quit smoking app available at: nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking. if you’d like to read more about establishing habit change pop along to the library or Booka and request a copy of the brilliant atomic habits by James Clear. have a happy healthy month! Inspiring, uplifting and educational event will celebrate those who thrive after brain injury An aspiring footballer who was left in a coma following an unprovoked attack outside a nightclub will talk about his road to recovery at a special event in Shropshire. Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices in Oswestry, will host the ‘Thriving After Brain Injury’ conference on 6 March, highlighting a range of inspiring stories from people who have battled back from life-changing injuries. One of the headline speakers is Jack Rutter, whose dreams of becoming a professional footballer were dashed after suffering with a serious brain injury when he was just 18 years old. But he refused to give up and is now a Team GB paralympic footballer, captaining the team at the Rio Paralympics. Jack uses his experience to encourage others that a brain injury need not mean the end - it can be the beginning. He said: “I am really looking forward to sharing my story at the Thriving After Brain Injury conference. “I hope to raise further awareness around the devastating effect one punch can cause on someone’s life and what it’s like living with a brain injury.

“Fortunately, my story is a positive one, and I hope those listening in can take something inspiring away from it so that they can help even more people within their roles.” Other speakers include Alex Danson MBE, the former captain of the England and GB hockey team, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2016, along with a host of medals in the Commonwealth Games, before retiring from hockey in 2020 due to a serious concussion injury, which changed her life. Dawn Humphries, head of the personal injury team at Lanyon Bowdler, said the event would be inspiring, uplifting and educational. “We are delighted to be welcoming such a diverse group of people, some of whom will share stories of grit and resilience, while others will discuss the very latest techniques in rehabilitation and support,” she said. Tickets for the conference, which will be held at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury, are available now at www.lblaw.co.uk/press-and-events/events-and-seminars or call 01743 280280.

New Griffiths traiNiNG CeNtre Griffiths Hire Shops have opened a new training facility: based in the old Sprayaway building on the Maes-Y-Clawdd industrial estate and just down the road from their Oswestry shop. The team at Griffiths realised they had outgrown their Wrexham shop, which was already a busy tool hire shop and adding in the training, meant a separate premises was needed. Griffiths already owned the building that now holds their training but have been using it for storage. It needed a bit of an overhaul, so it’s now kitted out with a heated indoor training room. With lots of parking and an indoor practical area with a canteen, any delegates attending can make themselves comfortable in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Director, Kevin Griffiths said, “We have been doing training for over 20 years, mainly holding IPAF Operator (MEWP) training, IPAF Harness, Pasma Tower Scaffold User training. We also run more occasional courses like Safe Use of Ladders and Steps, Ladder Restraint, Abrasive Wheels including safe use of hand

We plan on expanding what we are already doing but hope to offer a little more variety, serving the demands of our construction and industry customer base.

Delightfully tactile In the depths of winter, keep out the chill and cheer your spirits by surrounding yourself with furnishings that have soft and cosy textures.

Grab a good book, throw a log on the fire and snuggle up under a throw, blanket or quilt. Choose luscious fabrics such as velvet, lambswool and sheepskin (or fake fur) that are weighty enough to keep you toasty and feel lovely next to the skin. Add some thick, soft rugs for additional comfort. Not only do they look great in any room, but they’re fabulous for bare feet and help insulate your floor against draughts. Pretty curtains (ideally with a thermal lining) help to retain heat loss through your windows and add to the overall feeling of warmth and welcome. When it’s time for bed, heap quilts, blankets and throws on top. For old-fashioned cosiness, you might even want to add a hot water bottle. Sleep tight!

▲ Hot water bottles are ideal for adding that

extra bit of warmth, and this lovely lambswool cover comes in a natural shade that goes with everything. Oatmeal hot water bottle cover, £26, secretlinenstore.com.

▼ Made from soft polypropylene yarn, this

Moroccan-style fringed rug is durable, hard-wearing, stain-resistant and easy to clean. Safi Ethnic Diamond rug, £59.99, carpetright.co.uk.

▲ This thick and heavy plaid blanket

features blues, greys and earth tones woven in a traditional plaid check pattern. Gotland turquoise wool blanket, £85, countrymouse.co.uk.

▼ This pretty cottage-style decor contrasts

the rugged textures of exposed wooden beams with gathered cotton curtains and velvety upholstery. Pair of curtains in Cove organic cotton, from £539 for 1m width by 1m drop (unlined, with cottage pleat top), torimurphy.com.

▼ Soft and luxurious, with quilting and

hand-stitched knots, this throw is made from cotton velvet with a cotton lining and polyester quilting for warmth. Knotted velvet throw, £179, idyllhome.co.uk.

Perfect for a cold evening, this throw is skilfully woven, braided and stitched by hand using a traditional handloom. Moss stitch cotton throw in Charcoal, £95, nkuku.com.

Eichholtz Bernd Sofa Cambon Black £3690 from Sweetpea & Willow www. sweatpeaand willow.com

Interiors by Stephanie Dhillon

Curves and edges The curve trend has been around for a while, but for 2024 the focus is on the juxtaposition of curves and edges together. With softer lines and organic shapes paired with angular and hard surfaces, this approach brings a touch of elegance and fluidity to a space. The Arch shape is the simplest way to incorporate this airing, as it fully embodies curves and edges in one. Our eyes naturally follow the line of organic shapes so let your eye guide you when you are trying to figure out where a linear piece might fit into a curve-dominated space and vice versa. If your sofa has prominent curves then a rectangular solid piece like a sideboard or dresser nearby makes a good pairing. Then style the surface with a mix of curved and straight shapes; a table lamp with a curvaceous base, next to a stack of books does this perfectly.

Review your budget: Start the year by creating a thorough budget or revisiting your existing one. This will help you keep track of your income, expenses, and savings goals. Being financially organised is fundamental to smart planning. Build an emergency fund: In uncertain times, having an emergency fund is a lifeline. If you can, aim to set aside around three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a readily accessible savings account. This will provide peace of mind and financial security in turbulent times. Embrace diversification: Diversifying your investment portfolio is a time-tested strategy that can help manage risk. In 2024, consider spreading your investments across different types of assets to reduce exposure to unpredictable markets. Seek professional advice: Financial planning is complicated and, at times like this, having an expert in your corner is invaluable. As well as offering personalised advice and strategies that align with your goals, they can keep track of the ever-changing financial landscape. Think ahead: Remember that short-term market fluctuations are a normal part of investing. Stay focused on your long-term financial goals and avoid making impulsive, knee-jerk decisions based on market volatility now. Stay agile: Be prepared to adjust your financial plan as the economic uncertainty evolves. Flexibility is key to adapting to changes and making the most of new opportunities.

With the right strategies in place, you can face the year ahead with resilience and optimism. For help securing your financial future in 2024, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s Deon Hayward

How can I stop kids from witnessing their dad’s abusive new relationship? Q. I believe that my ex-partner is in an abusive relationship with his new partner. I believe this because of what our children tell me when they come back from seeing him and what his brother tells me. There is a Court Order in place granting him access to see the children every weekend, and there were no problems before he moved his new partner in, but now I am worried that they are witnessing arguments and may possibly witness even worse in the future? What can I do? A. Domestic abuse is taken very seriously by the Family Courts in England and Wales and the Courts would not want any child to be exposed to domestic abuse or arguments between adults. However, you cannot just stop access due to your concerns as it is likely the Court Order in place includes a warning notice setting out the consequences of failing to comply with it. Such consequences can include being fined or made to do unpaid work. In circumstances such as those you describe you may want to consider making an application to the Court to vary the current Order. You should make the court aware of the situation and state that, given the risks involved, you do not feel it is in the children’s best interests for the Order to continue in its current form. The Court might look at changing the Order so that your ex only sees the children when he is not with his new partner. Or they might ask social services or CAFCASS to undertake investigations into the situation. Be assured that the Court will only make an Order if it is in the interests of the child, which also means that it must be safe. You should make an appointment with a solicitor specialising in family law to discuss your options.
