Who fondly remembers Woolworths in town? There’s been such a change recently on the high street, it got me thinking back to the 80s when shops seemed to be around for years on end. It was the Willow Street entrance of Woolworths that provided the biggest pick ‘n’ mix selection a child could dream of! Interestingly, Woolworths originally opened on Cross Street in the 1930s, where Sports Direct is now. It didn’t move far though.
Some of the staples in Oswestry now, are locally owned small businesses who’ve been around for some time. Whether it’s a pub, a delicatessen, salon or herbalist, they are still here providing service to our lovely little town.
Let’s have a great July and see you next month!

Despite the light rain in the middle of the day, the 11th Oswestry Community Games more than met organisers’ expectations and around 1000 people of all ages turned up to enjoy the free activities in Cae Glas Park provided by diverse local organisations covering sports and dance. The live music was once again provided by Bartells, who lived up to their growing reputation and seeing the Red Arrows fly over at 3.23pm was just a bonus!
At the closing ceremony, Oswestry Town Council Mayor Mike Isherwood thanked everyone
for their support, and spoke about the importance of the Community Games to help improve people’s physical and mental health. With around 150 volunteers there, he was delighted to be there and congratulated everyone and all their work in the clubs that support the community and this great event.
Darren Edwards Guest of Honourthen made an inspiring speech about his journey to reach this point, and to take advantage of the opportunities we have available locally. Phil Brown Town Crier then closed the Games with his verse and inimitable style!
Grace Goodlad and Duncan Borrowman, the owners of The Bailey Head in Oswestry, are celebrating after being announced as the winners of the Campaign for Real Ale’s Shropshire Pub of the Year and Shropshire Cider Pub of the Year.
The pub which won Shrewsbury and West Shropshire Pub of the Year six weeks ago and has won Shrewsbury and West Shropshire Market Towns Pub of the Year every year since it opened in 2016, has never won the overall prize for Shropshire.
Grace said, “Yet again we have to thank our staff and customers for all of the support they have given us, which has meant we have managed to achieve far more than we ever envisaged. We are massively indebted to all of you.”
Cyclists are gearing up for a popular charity bike ride with a scenic route from Oswestry’s Hope House children’s hospice to either Lake Vyrnwy or Lake Bala.
Cycle Challenge 2024, on Sunday 11 August, starts and finishes at Hope House, in Morda, and has become a favourite on the annual cycling calendar.
Hundreds of new and experienced cyclists are expected to join the event. They can choose to pedal a 56-mile route to Lake Vrynwy or a 70-mile distance to Lake Bala. The Lake Bala challenge returns via Bwlch y Groes – one of the highest public road mountain passes in Wales with a summit altitude of 545 metres.
Early bird entry is £27.50 until 14 July, before rising to the full price of £35. Limited entry will be available on the day. Hope House cycle jerseys are also available at £30 each. Refreshments will be served at a halfway station, with an afternoon tea provided on return to Hope House. All cyclists will receive a goodie bag which includes a specially designed handy water bottle. Entrants must be 16 and over are encouraged to raise additional funds from sponsorship or a sweepstake.

An Oswestry breast cancer survivor who became well known in the town for her ‘pink day’ fundraisers is hanging up her receptionist’s phone and retiring after 38 years of working for a local law firm.
Irene Eke joined Brown & Lloyd, now known as GHP Legal, in 1986 and became ‘the voice at the other end of the line’ for many hundreds of the firm’s clients. In 1993 she survived major surgery for breast cancer and has been a regular fundraising organiser in the firm’s Willow Street offices ever since. From persuading solicitors and other staff to dress down in support of Genes for Jeans, to getting them to wear pink socks, pink fingernails and even pink pyjamas on Wear It Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness, Irene has been an inspiration to everyone who works with her.
GHP Legal Senior Partner, Richard Lloyd, said, “Irene is one of the most cheerful people I have ever met, and she has been an inspiration to other
breast cancer sufferers and survivors in the town. At GHP Legal we were all proud of the way she handled her illness and have always been keen to support her fundraising ideas. After such a long time it is going to seem strange not to see her behind the reception desk, but she deserves a well-earned rest, and we all wish her the very best in her retirement.”

You might remember the story last year of Ian Davies and his daughter Dani setting out to race against each other across the Atlantic Ocean in a bid to raise money for charity. Both rowing in pairs, Ian was partnered with his friend Jim Ronaldson, and Dani paired with her husband Mark. Getting fit and ready was a huge part of the challenge for them. But now they’ve completed it, making it safely back to base and raising a whopping £8000 in the process!
As well as the wonderful amount for charity, Ian and his partner Jim, set a world record for “the oldest pair to row any ocean”. What an amazing bonus after a gruelling challenge.
Sharing his thoughts about this, Ian says, “Jim and I beat Dani and Mark to the finish line with a combined age of 131 years, but now I think it’s time to hand over the baton to the younger generation. It took us a total of 66 days, 17 hours and 39 minutes to complete it. Dani and Mark completed it in 73 days, 12 hours and 3 minutes.” So how did it all unfold in the end?
Once they crossed the start line and had been on the Ocean for a week or so, they were out of range for a helicopter rescue. So, if there was an emergency, the nearest ship that could help would be sent out to find them and pick them up. Quite an unnerving thought really. We haven’t all been out in the middle of the ocean, so we can only imagine the desolate image portrayed in the movies is somewhat accurate. For Ian, Jim, Dani and Mark, at this point, the only way off the boat was to keep on rowing to Antigua.
“We did have some communication issues along the way. We started with a total of 6 phones, but by day 5 we only had two working. Occasionally, I was able to call Dani, but it was strange I could barely keep in touch with her only 200 miles away. However, I could do a live interview on Radio Shropshire with little or no problems,” Ian says.
“The worst part of the journey was receiving news that one of our fellow rowers had died on this year’s
challenge. Our deepest condolences went out to his fellow team members and family in Australia.”
“The best part was completing the challenge, raising money and the tremendous reception at the finish line in Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua. Dani and Mark were blessed with a multitude of wildlife along the way including orcas (killer whales), sharks, marlin, dolphins, puffer fish, flying fish and more! Whereas Jim and I encountered a few flying fish and a solitary marlin. I think Dani and Mark were on the David Attenborough challenge!”
Ian has some solid advice for anyone thinking of taking on a tough boating challenge. “My advice is to choose your crew carefully. The biggest issue on board isn’t sharks, or capsizing, it’s crew conflict. Something that isn’t a problem on day 2, could become a big problem by day 22 if you haven’t sorted it out.”
The £8,000 raised was split evenly between Papyrus (Jim’s charity) and Myeloma UK Ian’s charity). Ian suffers with Multiple Myeloma, which is treatable but not curable. He’s had two bone marrow transplants so far in the last 9 years and Myeloma UK is the organisation/charity that develops new treatment regimes, and pushes for new drugs, working towards finding a cure for this cancer.

2024 will see the annual Graham Edwards Memorial Trophy tournament celebrate 50 years of raising money for Leukaemia research. Sponsored By The Great Weston, it’s a fantastic achievement by so many people to have reached this milestone.
Graham Edwards was a talented local footballer who sadly lost his battle with Leukaemia in 1974 at the young age of 21. Friends of Graham set up the football tournament the following year and raised the grand sum of £100. Fast forward to 2024 and they have raised a phenomenal total of £173,000 for Leukaemia research.
The fundraiser has held lots of events over the years as well as the tournament to raise money. But through its history, many celebrities
have attended the sportsman’s dinners: Paul Merson, Ray Parlour, Lee Sharpe, Razor Ruddock, Mickey Quinn and Duncan McKenzie have all contributed to the incredible total raised for Leukaemia research. Gary Lineker, Steve Bull, Joey Jones Ian Rush and Paul Rideout, are just a few that have guested on the final day of the tournament. Even The Drifters and The Commitments have played at past music events.
Plans for the fundraising activities have been finalised for 2024 but there’s still a lot of hard work ahead to get things off the ground. 8 local football teams will battle it out to see who will lift the trophy this year. The tournament is played at the Gobowen playing fields, starting on Sunday 7 July and will run throughout July every Sunday, finishing with the final game on Sunday 28 July. The final day is a perfect opportunity to support the tournament and enjoy the summer weather, with a BBQ and outside bar. Come and spend some quality time with family and friends whilst supporting this worthy cause.
If you can’t resist the chance to win a prize, enter the grand raffle being
held throughout June and July - the first prize is a holiday for two in Spain! Tickets are just £1, so how can you not enter?
During May this year, 6-year-old George completed a 50-mile sponsored walk in memory of his grandfather who sadly lost his battle with Leukaemia. The young lad raised an impressive £1000 for the Graham Edwards Memorial Trophysuch an inspiring story. Can you help raise some money with a sponsored walk or similar type of event?
As part of the 50th celebrations grab yourself a ticket for the muchanticipated Gala Dinner on 30 November at Park Hall Showground. You’ll be entertained by the talented local band, the Bartells and your compare and resident comedian for the evening is John Martin. Enjoy the two-course meal, auction and raffle, knowing you are helping support the cause. Tickets are just £40 per person or invite your friends and book a table of ten.

Hi! Most of you know us, but for those who don’t, our names are Sam and Martyn. We are the owners of Salon XV based here in our quaint market town of Oswestry and are currently the only two full time stylists
Our heart and soul has gone into the making of this space and we seek to always maintain that integrity with every step. We want to tell you a little about our path in opening the salon and where we are wanting to take it.
We are both partners in life and for the last 26 months have been partners in business, and what a whirlwind those months have been! Having both been in the industry for over 22 years we have worked for some of the top hair franchises in not only Shropshire but the country. Salon XV offers four premium product brands being Sebastian, Maria Nila, Wella Professional and our newest one SHED. We take pride and care in our selection of products in the salon making sure we cover all bases for clients hair care needs. Importantly, we also like to make sure that it’s affordable for everyone.
We would like everyone to know we are both Wella master colour experts, this mean that we have both successfully passed a highly comprehensive Wella education programme to ensure we can offer you the very best hair colour experience, making us a Wella certified salon.
Within the first two years we’ve won many awards which have included best hair salon in Shropshire and the West Midlands, also gaining our 5 star rating with the Good Salon Guide for hair and aesthetics. As a salon we aim to be as sustainable as possible — obviously the one thing we use a lot of is water, so we try to help as much as we can by having biodegradable towels and tissue products made of bamboo. The gift bags we provide are made of either 100% recycled plastic, paper or hessian. We offer a loyalty card service both for services and products.
We also love working with local companies, keeping our carbon footprint down as much as we can.

More than 40 members of Claire’s Slimming World in Oswestry took part in Shrewsbury’s Race for Life on Sunday 2 June, and raised over £5000 for Cancer Research UK. Some ran, some jogged and some walked the 5k distance, but they all completed it and Claire, the consultant from Oswestry, couldn’t have been prouder.
She said, “Some of my members haven’t done any physical activity in years, but with Slimming Worlds unique physical activity programme called Body Magic, they have started to become active and with the support of all of my groups, absolutely smashed the 5k!
“In my groups, we help members to make changes to the way they
shop, cook and eat to lose weight but also we help them to start to build in an active lifestyle too. It’s an easy-tofollow programme that can be built into busy lifestyles so everyone can do it. One of the benefits of losing weight and being more active is that it can reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer such as breast, bowel, womb, ovarian and gall bladder cancer.
“Through weekly support in group,
members are encouraged to move more and help them make physical activity an enjoyable part of their everyday life. They also meet other like-minded people, make friends and have fun and that’s exactly what we had in Shrewsbury. The sun was shining and we all enjoyed the team spirit of the Cabin Lane Crew.”

More than just a walk in the park
This year, The Border Outdoor Dabblers (BODS) are celebrating their 25th year. Established in 1999, they offer much more than just scenic walks through Oswestry and the Borderlands. Yes, they organise weekly outings for walkers of all abilities, but what truly sets them apart is their emphasis on building a strong social network within the group.
Unlike fitness groups focused on pushing limits, BODS walks are designed for a relaxed pace. The priority is to soak in the beauty of the surroundings, appreciate the local flora and fauna, and discover interesting historical titbits along the way. Difficulty levels gradually increase as the days lengthen, starting with flatter terrains in April and progressing to more challenging hillocks later in the season.
This approach makes BODS walks suitable for a wide range of people. The group welcomes individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Whether you’re a seasoned walker or just starting out, you’ll find a friendly and supportive environment at BODS.
The walks themselves are a delightful exploration of Oswestry’s natural gems. BODS takes members to a diverse selection of
locations, including Llanymynech Hill, Oswestry Racecourse, Llansillin, Colemere, Sycarth, Llangollen, Llynclys Common, and Rodney’s Pillar. Over the course of a walking season, participants can experience a total of 48 unique routes, ensuring a constant sense of discovery.
A key element of the BODS experience is the social aspect that unfolds after each walk. The group typically concludes their outings at a local pub, providing a relaxed space for members to unwind, share stories, and forge lasting friendships. This post-walk tradition allows participants to connect beyond the physical activity, building a strong social bond that extends far beyond the walking trails.
BODS understands that life can be unpredictable. There’s no pressure to participate in every walk. Members can choose which outings fit their schedule, allowing for a level of flexibility that caters to busy lifestyles. This approach makes BODS an ideal option for those who want to incorporate some outdoor activity and social interaction into their lives without a rigid commitment.
While walking is at the heart of BODS, the group also organises occasional weekend walks and other social events throughout the year. This adds variety to the experience and further strengthens the social connections between members.
The BODS philosophy is one of inclusivity. Well-behaved dogs and children are always welcome, making the group a great option for families or those who enjoy the company of their furry companions. This welcoming atmosphere ensures that everyone feels comfortable and can participate fully in the BODS experience.
The Border Outdoor Dabblers offer a unique experience that goes beyond simply getting some exercise. They provide a platform for connecting with nature, discovering hidden corners of Oswestry, and most importantly, building a strong social network. Whether you’re a seasoned walker seeking new routes or someone looking for a friendly group to explore the outdoors with, BODS offers a welcoming and enriching environment for all. Remember, it’s not just about the walk; it’s about the company you keep along the way.

This month’s choice, ‘Monolith’, is an ultra-low budget Australian thriller with a cast of one, plus a few extra voices, all set in one suburban home. It exploits these limitations to great effect, proving that a great script and concept matter most.
A disgraced journalist starts a ‘Mysteries of the World’ type podcast and, following an email from a stranger, begins investigating appearances of unusual black bricks that cause people to experience visions. Delving further into the mystery, she discovers more recipients of these bricks and speaks to them online about their origins. It’s an unusual set up and may not feel very cinematic, but the acting and editing really sell the story. The (unnamed) journalist, played by l ily Sullivan, is on screen for virtually the entire 90 minutes, and although the action never leaves her home, it’s still a gripping film. Fans of mystery podcasts, Hitchcock, and Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending thrillers will find much to enjoy here.

The Shropshire Good Food Trail is back and bigger than ever for summer 2024 with double the locations and a full six weeks of mouth-watering offers highlighting the good food grown, made, sold and served across the county.
The innovative food trail, which put Shropshire’s top quality food producers firmly on the map, is this year celebrating Shropshire’s abundance in the round-the-county foodie route.
The food trail will guide both local people and visitors to over 100 venues. Around 4,000 food trail maps are due to be distributed around the county.
The Shropshire Good Food Trail was launched last year by the Shropshire Good Food Partnership. The fun and informative map and guide originally featured more than 50 venues growing, making, selling or serving the county’s finest and most sustainably produced food.
Now the Shropshire Good Food Partnership has expanded the tasty trail to double the number of locations, increase the number of maps in circulation and has extended the event to take in the six weeks of the school summer holidays from Saturday 20 July to 31 August.
Ruth Martin of the Shropshire Good Food Partnership team said that the food trail aimed to highlight the many positives of buying good local produce.
“It supports the local economy, supports jobs and increases the amount of good food consumed. There are no downsides,” she said.
This year’s food trail will include markets to promote a vital part of Shropshire’s food economy and give an extra boost to the smaller scale local producers.
There will also be food trail events held across the county over the summer showcasing the delights of Shropshire food and farming and providing opportunities to connect
with nature and food production in Shropshire.
“The food trail aims to highlight smaller farms, shops and organisations that are great at producing but not great shouting about it. We want local people and visitors to veer off the beaten track this summer with our Shropshire Good Food Trail and discover new hidden gems around the county,” said Ruth Martin.
She added that the Shropshire Good Food Trail was a not-for-profit initiative to help increase awareness and support of the local food economy.
“Venues are not paying to be included on the map. This makes sure that all good food producers can be included on their merit with sponsors and donations helping to cover the costs,” she said.
She added that the Shropshire Good Food Partnership would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to sponsor the Shropshire Good Food Trail or make a donation. Anyone interested can email hello@shropshiregoodfood.org.
She said people could also get
involved by following the Shropshire Good Food Trail on Facebook or Instagram (@shropshiregoodfood) or by visiting one or more of the venues to taste Shropshire’s abundance.
Maps will be available to collect from venues across the county or a copy can be downloaded at www.shropshiregoodfoodtrail.org.
A directory of all the growers, makers, sellers, and servers will be available at www. shropshiregoodfoodtrail.org/.
Further information on the food trail is available by visiting the website or by emailing hello@shropshiregoodfood.org.
The food trail is a Shropshire Good Food Partnership initiative to promote, support and encourage local Good Food in Shropshire.
The partnership was formed with a vision to create a local food system that is ‘good for people, place and planet’. It brings together Shropshire’s most switched-on food producers, retailers and consumers to make Shropshire’s food system more resilient, sustainable and fair.

8 Preparation
Layers of orange jelly, coconut cream and fresh fruit give us this tropical-themed trifle. This includes a simple all-in-one cake recipe, but sponge fingers will work too!
Ingred I ents
• For the sponge cake (or use a 300g Madeira cake or 300g of sponge fingers)
• 120g butter, at room temperature
• 120g granulated sugar
• 2 medium eggs
• 120g plain flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
• For the other layers
• 1 x 85g packet orange jelly crystals
• 3 ripe mangoes, peeled, destoned and sliced (or 1 ripe mango and about 200g mango pulp)
• 500ml fresh custard
• 400ml double cream
• 1 tbsp coconut extract
To decorate
• Coconut flakes (optional)
• Lime zest (optional)
Method
1. First make the cake (if you’re making your own). Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6 and line a 20cm square brownie tin with baking parchment.
2. In a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the beater attachment, add all the cake ingredients and combine until smooth. If very stiff, add a little milk. Pour into the lined tin, level it out and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.
3. While the cake is cooling, make the jelly according to the packet instructions and leave to set in a wide, shallow baking dish.
4. Once the cake has cooled, slice it up and use it to cover the base of your trifle bowl (use any deep, glass bowl). If using sponge fingers, break them in half and use them to cover the base of the bowl. Top with slices from 1 mango and spread the jelly over the top (it doesn’t need to be neat as it’ll be covered).
Recipe extracted from Part-Time Baker: Simple bakes without the stress by Florence Stanton, out now, published by Carnival, priced £18.99, with photography by
5. Let it set in the fridge for at least 1 hour. If you can’t find mango pulp, make it by using 2 mangoes: chop and then use an electric or hand blender to create a thick pulp. Spread this over the jelly. Top with the custard.
6. Finally, whisk the cream with the coconut extract until whipped and fluffy. Spread this over the top of the trifle and top with coconut flakes and lime zest, if liked. Serve.
Moreton Hall School is proudly celebrating its 110-year history through a promenade piece of theatre taking place on Friday 5 July, that aims to highlight some of the school’s pivotal moments and influential figures throughout its vibrant and steeped past.
Set in the picturesque area of Weston Rhyn, surrounded by hundreds of acres of lush parkland, Moreton Hall’s current grandeur belies its humble beginnings. Founded by the Ellen Lloyd-Williams, wife of John Lloyd-Williams, a former headmaster of Oswestry School, Moreton Hall began in the heart of Oswestry with just thirteen pupils.
Speaking about the significance of the upcoming event, Principal Michael Brewer said: “Our Promenade performance offers a unique opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate the school’s vibrant history. Audiences will enjoy watching dramatisations of pivotal moments throughout the school’s legacy.
“The school’s site is extremely special and stands as a testament to the outstanding leadership and forward-thinking of Mrs Lloyd-Williams. Showcasing it in this way seems extremely fitting. I know that our pupils will, once again, put on a memorable performance, leaving the audience with a lasting impression of how remarkable this school is.”
Michael Jenkins, Director and Producer of the performance and Head of Drama, said: “The talent on offer at Moreton is exceptional, from the pupils through to the teachers and support staff. It has been thrilling watching the community work together in the planning and rehearsals of this special event.
The celebratory performance will feature not only Moreton Hall’s talented pupils but also a string of professional actors and performers from diverse backgrounds
The celebratory performance will feature not only Moreton Hall’s talented pupils but also a string of professional actors and performers from diverse backgrounds.
“This performance is like nothing we’ve ever done before. The audience can expect to be surprised by many of the elements, from the historically inspired and charming script to the visiting artists, many of whom are taking time out of their West End contracts to join us. And if that isn’t enough, the performance begins with a ride on a carousel or Ferris wheel, because, well, why not?”
Hattie Maddocks, Head Girl, added: “We are all incredibly excited to put down our books and get involved in this exciting performance that showcases Moreton Hall’s love for the arts and community. During my time here, I have been involved in so many performances and have loved every one of them. This event is particularly special as it allows us to celebrate our school’s rich history in such a creative way.”
The evening will conclude with a supper provided by the school’s onsite catering team, accompanied by live music from The Wandering Wings, ensuring a memorable end to the celebration.
This one-off theatrical performance is open to all, inviting not just those connected to the school but the entire community to join in the festivities. To book your tickets, visit: www.moretonhall.org/promenade or call 01691 773671.

If you’re looking for an alternative to full-boarding options, maybe it’s time to consider the increasingly popular idea of weekly boarding – a helpful, costfriendly bridge between the world of a day pupil and that of a full-boarder.
These days, you want to know that your child is gaining a consistent, high-quality education, regardless of the external environment. While you know this is crucial for their personal development and educational journey, your choice can also depend on the school’s distance away from you and whether having your child permanently away from home during term-time is the right choice for them, or for you.
When looking at independent school options, many families aren’t familiar with the idea of weekly boarding. This offers parents a much broader choice for their child, as they board during the week and return home at the weekends. Schools which were once considered to be too far away are now within reach. The school commute through the week is eliminated, freeing up more time for your other responsibilities and leaving the drive to and from school for a Friday and a Sunday.
both parent and child, as they know they have the confidence and self-reliance to thrive.
“Many students develop greater self-esteem, feel better prepared for the next stage in their lives and gain the tenacity to deal with the challenges of leaving the nest. Ultimately, weekly boarding is an option from which many parents, students and staff have reaped the benefits.”
Weekly boarding gives children the opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of support, available both in and out of the classroom. They have the opportunity to develop bonds with students from many other backgrounds and nationalities and learn about their cultures. Boarders grow and learn within larger friendship groups, share experiences together and form life-long friendships. They are provided the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility, such as Head of House and learn to become more self-sufficient, whilst developing the skills to work together as a team. Here at Ellesmere College, all this is done under the watchful eye of Housemasters and Housemistresses, with the support of a 24/7 sick bay and the nurture of Housemothers.
Many students develop greater self-esteem, feel better prepared for the next stage in their lives and gain the tenacity to deal with the challenges of leaving the nest. Ultimately, weekly boarding is an option from which many parents, students and staff have reaped the benefits.
Weekly boarding is the next logical step for many students, as they look to develop their independency and focus their time and energies on their academic and co-curricular commitments. Without the tedium of travel, they have the autonomy to make the most of their time, in the way that matters most to them. This move also provides you with a helping-hand, giving you the flexibility to successfully manage your own work and personal commitments. When nearing the end of their school journey, the step of moving to University or away from home is an easier one for
Both weekly and full-boarders have great fun, they can spend the evenings with their best friends and enjoy a wide range of exciting and meaningful activities on offer. This evening-time enrichment includes co-curricular activities, such as sport, music and drama. There are also house activities, guest speakers and academic twilight sessionssomething for everyone.

Oswestry must have more events and festivals than any other similar sized town. Throughout the spring and summer there’s always something happening in the town centre or in our wonderful Cae Glas park. Make sure you keep up to date with events coming up by following Oswestry Life’s social media pages.
Building a better community together
I am delighted to be Oswestry’s Mayor for the forthcoming year, a privilege few get to experience, and I have been looking forward to it for a long time. I follow Cllr Olly Rose who has represented the people of Oswestry with dignity and practicality, literally getting her hands dirty with Oswestry In Bloom and contributing enormously to the victory in the national awards last year – we won Gold!
My family moved to Oswestry when I was eight years old, and I have been a proud Oswestrian ever since. I love the town’s rich heritage, its position as a border town, the long tradition of its street and indoor markets, and the modern blend of Oswestry folk with our newer residents – from around the UK and well beyond – who have all enriched our local culture and community. This is another Oswestry trait: community. We care about each other.
Until recently, my wife and I ran Shlurp on Church Street, but I am now pursuing a new career in teaching because another of my passions is helping young people get the best start in life.
My hope for my Mayoral year is that I can contribute to the evolving community I will be representing, through championing and raising money for the many groups and individuals who volunteer so much time and energy to making life better for others. I want to promote Oswestry to the wider world as the amazing place we are lucky enough to call home and most of all, I hope to meet as many of you as possible along the way, so please say hello if you see me out and about.
Congratulations to Mike for becoming the new Mayor. I feel sure he will have as interesting and enjoyable year as I have had!
I have been proud to champion volunteers and volunteering during my term, and to have celebrated them and their achievements at the end of my term. Whilst handing out trees in the market and attending events, I’ve met a lot of visitors and I’ve been surprised at the number who come to the town and universally they love it. They come for our events, they come because they think it’s pretty, they love Cae Glas Park, and they use our independent traders.
I therefore finish my year feeling optimistic about Oswestry’s future and proud of its achievements. We have great assets here, with the many people giving their time voluntarily to develop the community being perhaps the greatest asset.
Thank you so much to all the lovely people I’ve met.
The Oswestry High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme has helped revitalise our town’s bustling high street and historic character.
Over the last three years, we have seen a host of improvements and initiatives that make Oswestry an even better place to live, work, shop and visit.
• 11 new residential units created in empty upper floors
• 16 shopfronts repaired, revamped or reinstated
• 5 empty retail spaces brought back into use
• 4 historic alleyways spruced up
• 3 Love Oswestry Festivals and
• 1 summer of arts programme
These bring people together to celebrate our town’s history, heritage and culture
There have also been improvements on Church Street which have made a big difference, with Oswestry BID leading the way in this much-needed work.
Oswestry Town Council provided a significant amount of match funding towards this heritage-led regeneration scheme because a vibrant town centre is vital to the town and our community.
As well as these improvements, the Council also funds free bus travel in Oswestry on Saturdays, runs our vibrant markets, supports tourism, invests in floral displays and festive lights, hosts free events and safeguards the town’s heritage assets.
The Council is welcoming applications from businesses and start-ups for grants to bring empty retail premises back into use.Funding of up to £5,000 is up for grabs from our Breathing New Life into Empty Properties scheme for businesses looking to set up in town centre premises that have been vacant for more than six months.
Grants can be used to refurbish and fit out premises as well as decoration, signage and improving accessibility.
For more information email enquiries@oswestry-tc.gov.uk.
Our parks team and Oswestry In Bloom have been busy!
Having won Gold and Best Large Town in the Country at last year’s Britain in Bloom, we aren’t eligible under the rules of the competition to take part this year. But we haven’t let that stop us putting on a show! Oswestry in Bloom continues to delight. Summer displays are blooming across the town with beds, planters and hanging baskets all bursting with colour.
Cae Glas Park is the jewel in our glittering crown and a magnet for all!
New, fully accessible, energy-efficient toilets at English Walls have been officially opened. The upgraded facilities mean even more people can enjoy a day out in Oswestry.
There are four individual toilet cubicles and one accessible cubicle which each have baby changing provision and are STOMA friendly. These operate using a locked door system and the 20p payment can be made by either coin or contactless payment. The accessible cubicle also operates using a Radar key.
There is also a Changing Places facility for those who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This state-of-the-art facility is larger and fitted with a hoist, privacy screens, changing bench and has space for carers. For use of the facility, there is a telephone number to call which returns a code for entry.
The improved facilities are part of our commitment to being as accessible and inclusive as possible and to achieving our target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
Brighten your day with a chat at our weekly Chatty Café at Hatters Café in Powis Market Hall.
Our Chatter & Natter tables offer a space where people can grab a cuppa and chat to each other which helps to lift your mood if you’re feeling lonely or in need of a boost. Stay for five minutes or longer if you are enjoying the company.
Lani from Visiting Angels supports the sessions welcoming newcomers and catching up with regulars.
Chatty Café has been such a hit, that we have introduced a Chatty Bench at Cae Glas Park. A colourful sign has been added to the Chatty Bench located on the path between the crazy golf and tennis courts. By sitting here, you will show you are happy to chat with whoever comes and sits next to you.
Last year, the Council bought Grade 1 listed Llwyd Mansion on the corner of Bailey Street and Cross Street bringing it into public ownership for the first time!
Dating back to the 15th Century, the aim is to conserve the mansion for future generations. It needs extensive restoration work that will involve specialist engineers, builders, carpenters and others.
We are pulling together a funding bid to the Heritage Lottery to support the conservation of this historic building in the heart of Oswestry. It’s a big project that will take time. We will keep you posted on progress.

Chill Out in the Park, Cae Glas Park An afternoon of laid back music
Since declaring a climate emergency in 2018, Oswestry Town Council has been busy looking at ways it can take action on reducing its carbon footprint and working with partners to make a difference too
Already we have:
• Planted more than 14,000 trees in Oswestry since 2021 –our aim is to plant 17,000 trees, one for every resident
• Reduced the number of annuals planted and stopped using glyphosates and peat
• Ensured that our electricity and gas come from certified green sources
• Started composting organic waste
• Introduced recycling in the park and the market
• Invested in environmental improvements in the toilets on English Walls
• Developed a biodiversity strategy and worked with local partners to improve green spaces
• Installed LED lights in the Guildhall
• Installed an additional EV charging point in Horsemarket Car Park
• Funded free loft insulation for residents.
There is much work still to be done and our big project for 2024/25 is to upgrade the streetlights we look after to LED lights that use less energy.
Would your community group or project benefit from extra funding?
Each year, Oswestry Town Council sets aside funding of up to £20,000 to support the work of community groups and organisations in Oswestry. Funding could go towards a range of ideas that benefit the people of Oswestry, such as environmental improvements, equipment, education or events that bring people together.
All applicants must be from a constituted organisation with a bank account in its own name.
More information and applications forms are available on our website.

Championing young people and providing services and activities for them remains a priority for the Council.
News that the Centre on Oak Street will transfer to Oswestry Town Council has been welcomed by many as it will secure its future as a community building and help us deliver our vision for a vibrant community hub.
Whilst it will take time for the transfer to be completed, we have committed to funding much-needed repairs to the building, which is likely to include a new roof – another big project for 2024.
In the meantime, we are:
• Funding the youth club running at the centre
• Funding the Time to Talk sessions at the Marches
• Part funding free holiday activities in Oswestry
• Supporting a targeted intervention programme to support young people at risk of being excluded from school
• Supporting and funding the town’s growing Youth Forum
• Facilitating partnership working through our Youth Partnership Panel.
If you are aged between 11 to 17 years and would like to use your voice to help shape the future of youth services in our town, join the Youth Forum. For more information email corriedavies@oswestry-tc.gov.uk.
We have received an award for good practice in governance, community engagement and council improvement.
The award scheme report highlighted the high standards of our operation and in particular the incredible work we’re doing with youth provision and addressing social isolation. It also praised the “wonderful” Letters to Heaven post box in the cemetery.
We will continue to look at ways we can keep improving the services we provide for our community – our indoor and outdoor markets, Cae Glas Park, three car parks, the Guildhall, a cemetery, allotments, the town’s archive, events, floral displays and festive lights.
Oswestry is one of 10,000 local councils in England and Wales and one of 230 in Shropshire (including Telford and Wrekin), all with the same legal powers.
We can only do what legislation requires or permits us to do and whilst this can be frustrating for Councillors, confusing for the public and challenging for staff, we can still achieve many things for and with our community.
This means that we must work in partnership with others and find different ways to deliver our objectives and influence others. The challenging financial situation that Shropshire Council finds itself in highlights the pressures on local government making the need to work with communities even more important than ever before.
We believe 2023/2024 has been a successful one for Oswestry Town Council and the town, and we move forward to 2024/2025 well positioned to continue our good work.
The Council remains in good financial health and has utilised the Smithfield Capital Receipt to fund some significant projects this year, such as the refurbishment of the toilets on English Walls featured in this report.
There’s lots of confusion about what the different types of local councils do, and of the services they are responsible for. Below is a summary of the services provided by us and by Shropshire Council. To contact Shropshire Council about services that it is responsible for, including potholes, visit www.shropshire.gov.uk.
Oswestry is divided into 7 wards and has 18 Councillors elected to represent the residents in their wards. Councillors generally serve a term of four years; the next election is due in May 2025 for Oswestry Town Council and Shropshire Council.

Imagine having been offered a brand-new car when you passed your test, nothing flashy but economical, practical and reliable, free of charge. It’s a generous offer with the only condition that you must keep it fuelled, serviced regularly, and ensure it passes all MOTs.
The catch? You have to keep this car for life. Would you take the offer?
Now, think of your body as this car.
Often, it takes a significant life event or persistent pain to realise the urgent need for self-care and maintenance which we often neglect.
As a Movement Coach, I specialise in helping professional individuals like you, bobbing along in your forties or fifties, juggling busy lives, family responsibilities, and the pressures of daily life.
My coaching approach is unique, focusing on fundamental movement and mindset changes. With intuitive analysis, I provide personalised guidance to help you move from feeling stressed, or in pain, to becoming fitter, healthier, and a little more youthful.
I provide personalised guidance to help you move from feeling stressed, or in pain, to becoming fitter, healthier, and a little more youthful.
We start with a comprehensive assessment, creating a clear baseline and setting tangible goals. In as little as twelve weeks you’ll see the physical evidence of your transformation; at which point we can re-assess progress.
Whether you’ve been inactive for a while or need to overcome specific injuries, I’m here to support you every step of the way. But remember, this journey requires your commitment. I work best with clients who are ready to invest time and money in their health, and who understand that lasting change comes from within.
Joining my programme means joining a community of like-minded individuals striving for transformational change. You’ll receive movement assessment screenings, tools to manage and reduce pain, and mindset strategies to overcome mental blocks. Together, we’ll achieve what once felt unattainable.
Your body is your lifelong vehicle. Let’s keep it roadworthy, fuel it well, and ensure it takes you wherever you want to go. Invest in yourself today for a healthier, freer tomorrow.

There are whole books, even scores of them, about the doctor – patient relationship. I suppose they are really about what many patients call bedside manner. I started saying I wanted to be a GP as a young boy and I think getting to know the people you were trying to help was at the core of that little boy’s motivation. I enjoyed a career lasting 36 years: most of that in Oswestry. I got to know many of my patients. I got to know how they described their symptoms, their anxieties, their mannerisms, how they liked to communicate and even their senses of humour.
I considered it a crucial part of the job and recent research backs this up. Seeing the same doctor reduces prescriptions and referrals and is associated with higher levels of satisfaction – on both sides. It took me a while to work out this was a twoway process – patients get used to our foibles, mannerisms and sense of humour too. They either like it or they move on!
I hear many people talking about how difficult it is to see any doctor nowadays, let alone the same one. Sometimes it perhaps doesn’t matter who you see: for acute, straightforward things I might agree, but over a lifetime and in chronic illness this relationship matters. I worry that both our current generation of GPs and patients are allowing this central tenet of the job to wither. That will mean more investigations, more referrals, more prescriptions and, even more importantly, less satisfied patients and doctors. It will mean fewer medical students are attracted into general practice (already happening) and, in meeting demand, more consultations with nurses, pharmacists, medical assistants and health care assistants. Some of these changes may be positive but if we allow the good old-fashioned doctor-patient relationship to decline we are potentially throwing the baby out with the bath water. Some things are worth fighting for!

A new event in Oswestry to bring people and businesses together has enjoyed a successful start - with more to come.
The inaugural Women in Business event took place at The Townhouse, attracting more than 50 people and featuring a talk by North Shropshire MP, Helen Morgan.
Arranged by Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, the events are open to everyone and aimed at providing an opportunity for professionals to meet and grow their network of contacts - as well as being interesting and inspiring in their own right.
Rachel Tomley, of Lanyon Bowdler’s family law team in Oswestry, came up with the idea of hosting regular events and said she was delighted with how the first meeting went.
“It was extremely pleasing to see an overwhelming turnout to our first Women in Business event,” she said.
“The feedback was extremely positive, with many local attendees explaining they have wanted an event like this to grow their professional relationships with each other.
“We are very pleased to afford them this opportunity and to create a space where connections can be made.
“It is also important to me that rural areas such as Oswestry have the same opportunities to network when
compared to regional and city areas, which was one of the driving forces to create this event.
“We wish to give a big thank you to Helen Morgan, North Shropshire MP, for her time as our guest speaker and sharing her experiences as a woman in professional settings.
“Although the event is called Oswestry Women in Business, it is important to Lanyon Bowdler as a firm that our events are inclusive, and therefore all are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing professional relationships build across the Oswestry area.”
The next event is due to take place on 27 September with a talk from Victoria Sugden, the charity director of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital League of Friends.
For more information, email info@lblaw.co.uk or pop into Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office in Church Street.

The homely look of cottage interiors can be achieved by anyone anywhere, even if you don’t live deep in the countryside or in a chocolate box cottage. Aim for traditional shapes for your bigger furniture items, then set about gathering a careful selection of art and antiques to give that built over time look. Deep seated armchairs or sofas invite you to slow down and relax, and look to soft shades of pink, blue and green to keep that pretty cottage vibe. Floral motifs were made for this setting; but also look for printed fabrics that evoke meadows and bucolic country scenes. Painted furniture can bring a more up to date modern feel, if painted in fun surprising colours, and plate walls are having a modern moment too. Here’s an appealing mix of examples to inspire a summery cottage style.

I wonder what the rest of the summer will be like. So far it has been very changeable. The ground has dried out now after that exceptionally wet spring. My spring flowers really suffered, and the summer plants were slow to start off initially. They seem to be catching up now, but it has been a battle protecting them from slugs and snails.
The watering regime is a priority as we go into the normally hottest month of the year. It’s important to get a balance: enough but not too much. Wherever possible, I use saved water from the water-butt, but if it is running low, I will keep the rainwater I have to water the blueberries. They really hate tap water.
Terracotta pots tend to dry out quickest, but make sure all your pots have free drainage. Not only can over-watering rot your plants, but
excess water can wash away valuable nutrients. Which brings up feeding. Every couple of weeks I fill a large bowl with diluted all-purpose feed and then carefully lower my hanging baskets into it until they are nicely saturated. Then I hang them over the bowl to drain before putting back on their brackets. What’s left in the bowl is then poured into the watering can for use elsewhere. There is plenty of natural food around for the birds now, but make sure you have clean, fresh water available for them, they’ll appreciate it.
To prolong flowering, combine an evening walk around the garden with deadheading and maybe some gentle pruning to stop shrubs getting too leggy. Picking sweet peas will keep them blooming, if you let the pods form, the plants will sense they have done their job and stop producing pods.
In the greenhouse keep removing the side-shoots of vine type tomatoes. You may have to support the trusses of fruit as they get bigger. A fully loaded tomato plant will be very heavy, and you don’t want to risk it collapsing after all the work that you have put in. Finally keep checking the courgettes. They miraculously turn from courgettes into marrows when your back is turned!
Whether you’re saving for your first home, preparing to support your children through university or are hoping to retire soon, most of us have at least one financial goal.
Achieving your goal doesn’t happen on its own though – that’s where creating a financial plan comes in. A bit like a roadmap, a financial plan outlines the route you need to take to help you reach your ‘destination’.
Here, Oswestry-based independent financial adviser and co-director of Belgrave Wincham, Craig Roberts, shares his tips on where to start:
“Begin by looking at your monthly income and expenses,” Craig advises. “Be thorough with this and ask yourself if you’re currently on track to reach your goal? If not, now is the time to work out where your money is going and, crucially, where you want it to go.”
“The next step,” he continues, “is to make a monthly budget. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but the 50/30/20 approach is typically one of the easiest ways to plan. This ring-fences around 50% of your take-home pay for ‘needs’ (things like bills, mortgages and utilities), 30% for ‘wants’ (such as clothes and going out) and 20% for savings and/or paying back any debts.”
“Don’t forget your plan needs to take into account the future too,” continues Craig. “This includes an emergency fund for things like car repairs or unexpected home improvements as well as your pension and retirement savings. Once these foundations are in place, you can then prioritise your goals and start working towards them.”

Craig adds that you should also remember to review your plan regularly: “Your circumstances may change so make a note to check in on your plan and adjust if needed,” he suggests. “With a solid strategy in place, it is possible to achieve your goals.”

by developers has cost me thousands. Can I get
Q: My lawns and flower beds have literally been under water for two months and I believe it is due to a housing development behind my property. During construction the developers have piled up earth at least 4m high behind my garden fence, presumably to be ultimately spread around the site. Meanwhile, it has seeped downhill into my garden. My neighbours’ gardens that do not have mounds of earth behind them are not flooded.
The excess water has rotted hundreds of pounds worth of bulbs and other plants and attracted an infestation of leather jackets that have eaten the grass roots and left me with a large bare lawn that I have just had to have re-laid at vast expense. The developers say I cannot prove they are to blame. Do I have any chance of claiming compensation?
A: If the cause of the flooding can be linked back to the construction site and shown to stem from ‘non-natural’ or artificial land uses, then it may be possible for you to bring a claim. Hopefully you have taken dated photographs, of both the mound of earth and the flooding in your garden? If you have, then this is a good starting place to ascertain your chances of a successful claim and you should make an appointment to see a solicitor who can consider all the evidence and advise you further.
If you have a potentially viable case, as well as helping you to compile the evidence your solicitor can contact the developer on your behalf with a view to achieving an early out-of-court settlement. If necessary your solicitor can also facilitate the appointment of an independent specialist flooding expert and, if all else fails, issue court proceedings to get you compensation. If the mound of earth is not moved, your solicitor could apply for an injunction to prevent further damage to your property.
