Welcome to the June edition of Oswestry Life. There’s something really exciting about the start of summer. It’s my favourite time of year; looking forward to summer holidays, packing away those winter woollies and getting outdoors to enjoy the sunshine. It’s at this time of year that I realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world. A quaint little market town surrounded by glorious countryside and pretty villages. Now is the time to get out and explore it in all its glory. Enjoy the read.

Birthday celebrations for Rotary club Market 60 years young
A local market is celebrating after trading for 60 years. The WI market held every Wednesday morning 8am to 1pm at the Memorial Hall on Smithfield Street in Oswestry will be changing its name to Oswestry County Market. Gillian Fynes who helps run the event says: “We are a group of local people producing great value fresh produce including cakes, preserves, pickles, fresh eggs. Also hand knitted and craft items and a wide selection of locally garden plants. “The plants stall is filled with hardy perennial plants grown locally and the stall holders are very knowledgeable and helpful. Our cake and preserve stall has many regular customers as everything is homemade. Our craft stall comprises a mix of hand knitted items, homemade cards through to wood turned items. Wonderful for presents all year around. We are just entering the season for fresh vegetables and bunches of flowers all home grown.” Above, from left, Heather Williams, market manager Margaret Edwards and Barbara Molesworth

Shropshire Masons donation to students
£50K boost for Horatio’s Garden Horatio’s Garden at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has had a boost in the form of a £50,000 donation from the National Garden Scheme.
Owen Paterson, the Conservative MP for North Shropshire, who broke his back while out riding, said: “Having spent several weeks immobile in the outstanding care of the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries, I fully appreciate the extraordinary value, for those who may have to spend months on their back, of getting outside, seeing and touching plants and flowers and spending time with family and friends.” Owen’s wife, Rose Paterson, has led local fundraising for Horatio’s Garden Oswestry Appeal and said: “I am absolutely delighted to hear of this incredibly generous donation from the National Garden Scheme to Horatio’s Garden’s Gobowen appeal. This is a cause close to my and my husband’s heart, and we know the garden will be a joy and a haven for spinal injury patients and their relatives.” Pictured L to R: Olivia Chapple, chair of Horatio’s Garden and Rose Paterson, local fundraiser and wife of MP, Owen Paterson who was treated at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries
Plea for volunteers to help elderly Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is looking for volunteers in and around Oswestry and Ellesmere to help older people.
Duke of Edinburgh students at Derwen College doing their Gold Award were given a fantastic boost this week from members of the three Masonic Lodges in Oswestry.
The local charity is keen to recruit more volunteer befrienders in Oswestry and Ellesmere, as well as volunteers for their day centre off Monkmoor Road and the Oswestry charity furniture shop.
St. Oswald Lodge have made a donation of £670, and Fitz Alan Lodge and Cae Glas Lodges have each made a donation of £450 to the college. Their donations have been matched by the Shropshire Masonic Charitable Fund, making a grand total of £2020.
Volunteering can be very rewarding and make a real difference to the lives of older people on your doorstep. The team at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin provide training and on-going support to ensure all volunteers are happy and fulfilled in their roles.
The money will be used to fund the students to go on two expeditions and a residential activity which are part of the Gold Award challenges. One of the expeditions will involve the students navigating their way through the Snowdonia Mountains, using a map and a route card. The students will be walking for about 10k each day and when they arrive at camp each night they will have to set up camp and prepare their tea on the camping stoves.
Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “There are lots of opportunities to give your time to help older people in Oswestry and Ellesmere. If you have a few hours a week that you can spare to help out then please get in touch.” If you would like to find out more about any of the volunteering roles in Oswestry and Ellesmere, please contact the volunteer recruitment team on 01743 588 570 or visit www. ageuk.org.uk/shropshireandtelford.

Guitarist Kevin Williams comments: “This is a huge step for us and an absolute privilege to be considered as local support for such a big band. Stone Broken are huge in the UK and on the brink of global stardom. They are regulars on Kerrang and Planet Rock and will be appearing at Download and Steelhouse festivals this year.” Tickets for the gig are £13 and can be purchased by calling Lita May Williams on 07944 933337. Care company puts cl
Our values
Our Managing Director, Jenny Upshall, set up Allenby Douglas care services after a long career in nursing at a senior level, but the inspiration came from her father, Allenby Douglas Lummis. Mr Lummis was a prisoner of war of the Japanese and one of thousands forced to work on the infamous Burma Railway. Conditions were appalling, and many of the prisoners developed health problems that would plague them for the rest of their lives. After his return from World War II, Mr Lummis spent much of his time visiting old comrades with health problems in their homes and he was passionate that when someone was sick or frail the best place for them to be was in their own home. This philosophy is at the heart of what we do at Allenby Douglas, and Mr Lummis and his wife Babs helped Jenny set up the company in 1999. Sadly he passed away in 2005 but the company which bears his name has grown to employ around 50 staff.

Allenby Douglas care services is not just another home care company. In fact we pride ourselves on being different by caring for our clients as if they were members of our own family. How are we different? To start with, 75% of our directors are registered nurses and all of us play an active role in caring for our clients. Our team of staff and carers are trained to work to a professional standard, highly motivated and love what they do, which is one reason why our staff turnover is so low. We have a reputation for achieving quality outcomes and our costs are affordable and fair. We are proud that we make a real difference to the lives of our clients every day.
Our Team Our staff are our most important asset – lots of companies say that but we really mean it. We’re careful to recruit locally as much as possible and we continually invest in training and developing our team.
Our CQC rating There are currently eight CQC Outstanding care providers in Shropshire - five GP Practices, one nursing home and one organisation providing care for people with learning difficulties and just one domiciliary care company - Allenby Douglas. We are absolutely delighted, particularly on behalf of our special staff who deliver the care. Our last CQC report awarded us an outstanding for care and we are delighted to have improved on this. Perhaps, just doing what we believe is right and sticking to it is all that matters ( we believe that small is best as larger companies lose touch with staff and clients.) We say on our website that not all companies are the same and the CQC have acknowledged this. At the end of the day it boils down to doing what is right, caring for people as we would care for those we love, employing staff who share our view and then doing it with

s clients first passion and commitment to the highest standards. Our staff are our greatest assets and we train and develop them to our high standards. We feel they are part of our family of care. Very few people choose to spend their time in a care home – we want for our clients only what we would expect for ourselves – It’s the golden rule – do to others as
“We believe people who need help with their daily needs prefer to stay in their homes.” you would to yourself, respecting their choices and holding families together at a time when they are under a lot of strain. We believe people who need help with their daily needs prefer to stay in their homes. Everybody is an individual and has different needs which may change over time, so we tailor our care services accordingly. We call this holistic care. And our staff are all caring and motivated people, who get to know our clients and spot problems before they get out of hand. If you want to come and work for us please pop into the office or ring for an application form. Our starting rates of pay are from £8.91 - £9.66 per hour, extra for trained staff plus 41p per mile for travel. In the spotlight
Couple putting an alternative sport to youngsters An Oswestry couple have taken on a new role to encourage local youngsters to take up golf. “The widely-held view is that golf is played by boring old men,” jokes Bob Grovestock-Thompson (knows as Bob GT), “but anyone can play.” Bob is a new volunteer for Mile End Golf Club, supporting PGA golf pro James Davies with juniors. The pair will be offering free and reducedprice lessons to encourage more young people to get into the sport. After moving to Oswestry in 2016 with his wife Anne, Bob joined as a senior member of the club last summer and hasn’t looked back since. Thanks to his experience with children and young people the club approached him to take on the role of junior organiser. Bob’s background in foster care and his experience engaging young people makes him ideal for the role. Bob fostered three children in his hometown of Arnage, Scotland and now in Oswestry he intends to open his home to young people coming out of care and provide lodgings with support. “It’s enjoyable building relationships with children. Through encouraging them in everything and offering new activities in manageable steps, it’s amazing what children who have low self-esteem can achieve. Seeing children laugh and have pride is great,” Bob said. The retired distribution supervisor wants to encourage young people, aged five to 18 years-old, who may never have considered golf to give it a go. “Golf is such a good sport for children

as it offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits. We know most children do not get sufficient exercise and golf is a great way to ensure that they do. It’s not a quick game once you get on the course and involves a lot of walking which is good for cardiovascular health but is also good for balance and coordination. Golf helps children in their social development as it involves skills of honesty, respect, cooperation, staying safe, self-motivation, concentration and perseverance.”
the sport we might find that parents, grandparents and guardians also take an interest. It’s a sport that can easily be played by all members of the family.” Ably supported by wife Anne, a non-golfer and part-time care worker at a residential children’s home, the pair plan to work together and use their combined knowledge of child development to support the scheme.
The club will offer different games to teach the basic physical skills of golf and make learning fun. Bob plans to visit local schools to engage young people and introduce golf with plastic equipment specially designed for younger children to teach them the basics. He hopes to encourage schools to offer golf as an additional sporting option.
“Golf gets young people out in the fresh air in beautiful surroundings,” says Anne. “In addition to the benefits of physical exercise, golf helps children focus and problemsolve, as they work out which club to use or shot to play and when. As children develop proficiency it helps improve their self-esteem. It’s all about making golf fun and keeping it fun.”
“Golf is such an inclusive, intergenerational game that by inspiring children to gain a love for

Local arts
Visual arts trail returns The Borderland Visual Arts (BVA) will open their doors to the public again this month to share and promote locally produced visual art. Held every year, this exciting event is now an established part of the Oswestry calendar, and brings in visitors from across the region and beyond. The 32 artistas, showing in 15 studios around the town and the borders, provides a great opportunity to see where and how they work across different media. There will be lots of work to see - some ‘in-progress’ - and the artists will be explaining and demonstrating how they produce their work. This will include paintings, prints, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, enamels, photography, and more. Oswestry and the surrounding area has become wellknown as a centre for high quality art, and this is an ideal opportunity to get up close. Although much of the art is for sale, there is no obligation to buy. The artists enjoy welcoming visitors to their studios to see their work. The number of studios makes visiting them all quite feasible, and the detailed guide makes planning your

trail straightforward. Pick one up at libraries, galleries, and Tourist Information Centres, or download one at the group’s website: www.borderlandvisualarts.com. There will be a complementary exhibition in the Willow Gallery from 2 June to 14 July, acting as a taster to the Open Studios event, and also displaying work from other BVA artists. This year’s Open Studios event runs over the weekends of 9-10 and 16-17 June from 10am to 5pm and promises to be even richer and more diverse than ever. Organiser and exhibiting artist Graham Mitchell began working with BVA 10 years’ ago and has watched the events grow in popularity each year. As well as being a photographer, he is a jewellery maker working in exotic woods and gemstones and found objects. He also produces lino-cut prints of locomotives. “My favourite part of the events is meeting the visitors,” says Graham, “especially young people who are intrigued by the processes involved and tell you about their own
art. It is an event for all the family and with such varied art, there is something for everyone. We have visitors of all ages and there is always something to interest the young ones. Watching a spinning wheel or stone carving is fascinating for young children.” Graham ends: “Many people find art galleries rather off-putting. Here is a chance to see art in a relaxed environment, often in amazing garden settings. A lot of work will be ‘in progress’ and people can talk directly to the artists. Oswestry has become a centre for high quality art and the amount and variety of work on show at this event makes it even more special. Visitors will be surprised at the number of studios tucked away in town or in the wonderful borders countryside.” Oswestry life | 13

Colourful clematis
From bold blooms the size of tea plates to delicate nodding bells adorning a garden arch, clematis are versatile and colourful climbers that no garden should be without. Whether left to clamber-up a trellis panel to cover walls and fences or trained over a pergola, clematis are a wonderfully diverse family with varieties to choose for flowers in every season of the year. Large-flowered hybrids are some of the most impressive, coming into their own during the summer months, and these are joined by daintier flowering varieties of clematis viticella that continue blooming into autumn Dozens of clematis varieties are available, with new ones being introduced every year, so visit local garden centres and nurseries to pick the ones that appeal. Colours and forms vary widely, with something to suit every colour scheme. Most enjoy their heads in the sun, but some, like pure white ‘Alabast’, will also grow in semi-shade. Don’t feel obliged to provide a structure or trellis for support as many clematis can simply be planted in amongst shrubs and left to grow up through them for support. Some of the best suited for this are varieties of Clematis viticella, like rich-red ‘Madame Julia Correvon’
Clematis ‘Madame Julia Correvon’ ©Adam Pasco Media
whose summer flowers are followed by fluffy seed-heads. Choose compact varieties to grow in containers, trained up an ornamental obelisk or wigwam of canes or hazel poles. Several new dwarf and compact varieties have been introduced in recent years too, ideal for planting in tall pots and left to trail over the edges. Clematis are often partnered with climbing roses and honeysuckle up pillars and pergolas to create longlasting flower displays, but vibrant combinations can be created with virtually any other climbers or wall shrubs. It’s not hard to see why clematis have such irresistible charm, and with so many inspiring ways to include them within the garden and patio your colourful clematis collection is guaranteed to grow!

Securing your home is Elem’entry Our home is our castle, but in the likely event that yours doesn’t have a fortress and moat protecting it, you’ll need the next best thing - a reliable lock system. Most of us already have what we assume to be a reliable lock, but did you know most locks can be broken into by a burglar in just nine seconds? It’s all on the website of Gobowen locksmith Allan Smedley at www.elementrysurelock.com. Allan, who is City and Guilds qualified supplies and fits an alternative to standard locks, an Ultion lock can make your
Did you know most locks can be broken into by a burglar in just nine seconds? home so secure the manufacturers are willing to pay £1000 compensation if anyone manages to break into your home. “You have to see it to believe it,” says Allan. “People don’t know how vulnerable they are – it’s easy for their homes to be broken into. When I went to the training, the first thing I noticed was I had the locks that were being broken into at home. They were being broken into in a couple of minutes,
so I immediately got mine changed.” The Ultion locks come with a unique set of keys that cannot be replicated. They are first registered when they are fitted and are password protected. It’s not just our homes that are under threat, as Allan explains: “Back in the day, when a car was broken into it could be hotwired. That isn’t possible now with new security systems. But many of us still walk into our homes and put our keys down by the door, so all the thieves need to do is get through our door and before you know it your car is halfway down the road.” Allan can also supply and fit a new type of Yale lock which can be operated from a smartphone. “If you’re in Manchester and your child can’t get into the house, you can send a one-off code to their phone so they can get in,” ends Allan. To find out more, call Allan at Elem’entry Surelock 24 hours a day on 01691 238176 or 07596 905558.

Save money on water and energy bills As the largest environmental drilling company in the UK Dragon Drilling specialises in water and ground source heating borehole installations, site investigations and monitoring services. They operate a diverse range of specialist drilling rigs and equipment, which enables them to meet the specific needs of customers in the domestic, agricultural, industrial and environmental sectors. If you currently use a large volume of water and face costly metered charges a water borehole can save you considerable sums of money. It also offers an excellent alternative if you have poor water quality or an unreliable supply. Sustainable in drought conditions and offering a reliable pressure, water boreholes can deliver safe, clean water direct to your property. Ideal for farms, caravan parks, leisure facilities and rural homes, water boreholes enable you to become independent of mains water. Using compact, rubber-tracked and manoeuvrable drilling rigs, they can help you establish a self-sufficient water supply with minimal disruption to you or your property.

When investing in a borehole for your property, whether commercial or domestic, they will help you assess the feasibility of an installation and also identify the potential cost savings based on your current metered charges. They provide a complete installation package, which includes a storage tank, variable speed distribution pumps, pressure vessel, control system and, if required, water treatment. They also specialise in Ground Source Heating systems. Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year and this energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water. They drill boreholes from which a ground source heat pump can extract, convert and transfer energy for domestic properties, commercial facilities and leisure complexes.
The benefits of ground source heating systems include: • On average, 75% free renewable energy • Government incentives available • Fixed and stable energy costs • Lower carbon emissions • Constant heat 24 hours a day • Fuels both hot water and heating • Directly replaces your existing boiler • Reversible to provide cooler temperatures in summer • Can add value to property If you have high water or energy bills why not contact Dragon Drilling today for a free site assessment to see if they could start saving you money. Simply call 01824707777 or email admin@dragondrilling.co.uk for more information.

Bird Spotting
If you are a regular reader, then you probably have noticed that I like to photograph birds. I am not a birder or even a bird watcher really. I suppose I’d describe myself as a bit of a naturalist, enjoying the fauna and flora on my walks. Serious birders will actively seek out species armed with their notebooks and telescopes, whereas I photograph those birds that happen to turn up (or usually fly off) whilst I stumble along. It does get a bit addictive though and explains why I carry a 2.9Kg telephoto lens around my neck! There are some incredible birds around the world, but I am constantly amazed at those I come across in Shropshire, or even come into the garden in the middle of Oswestry. As you start to notice them, you start to spot more and more. It may be just a little brown bird, but you’ll soon start to scour the identification books or search through countless images on Google.

Rambles with a camera
I am still unable to easily identify some of the more common birds, but that’s part of the fun, as is the fact they never stay still long enough. Occasionally I have come face to face with a kingfisher who is off before the camera can be raised. So where are the best places to see our feathered friends? Well, just about anywhere. Woodland for the smaller birds like tits, and warblers. The canals and meres for Reed Buntings, Herons and Kingfishers. The rocky outcrops for Sparrowhawks and Goshawks. More open areas for Red Kites, and Buzzards. The Hillfort is an especially good place to see Yellowhammers. Keep your eyes open on your next walk, and when you are at the Meres, look closer at the ducks. You’ll see Grebes, Tufted Ducks, and maybe some of the naturalised foreign species like Goosanders and Mandarins. Oswestry life | 39

A TASTE OF STUDENT LIFE
Wrexham Glyndŵr University is holding an Open Day June 9, designed to give prospective students a taste of what it’s like to study at Wrexham Glyndŵr and a chance to learn much more about the wide variety of degree programmes available, what the campus has to offer as well as being able to meet with course staff and current students. Lianne Vernon is an engineering student who visited an Open Day, unsure if higher education was for her and is now in her third year. She liked what she saw at the Open Day, spoke with staff and lecturers, signed up and has never looked back. She said: “I came along to an Open Day, saw what was going on and thought ‘that’s the thing for me.’ I started on a Foundation year and I’m now hoping to go on to do a Masters.” Lianne credits the support lecturers on her course have given her for her success – and for her commitment to her studies. She said: “The lecturers have taught me lots, they help to put things into perspective and talk you through so you see how what they are saying works in practice. They relate things to reality, so you can understand them.” Ultimately, Lianne’s ambition is to apply her studies to Formula One. She said: “That’s where I’d love to end up. Formula One engines are 1.6 litre engines, and those cars are going 200 miles an hour – you just watch

Woodside Primary School have recently celebrated the opening of their newly refurbished Ruth Jackson Nursery. The nursery was named in tribute to the late Ruth Jackson, a much-loved and valued member of the Woodside School community. Staff, past and present joined the Jackson family as they cut the ribbon for the ofďŹ cial opening. The new refurbishment means that nursery children now enjoy fantastic facilities, giving them the best possible start to their learning journey.

Beautician sitting pretty at top of her class Twenty-nine-year-old Zara Laurie has reason to celebrate after qualifying as a training educator in beauty. Zara first opened the The Nail and Beauty Cabin in 2015 after working in the beauty industry for 10 years. The salon, located on Cabin Lane has grown to offer services including EVL lashes – a ‘lash lift’ which leaves clients with fuller looking lashes for up to six weeks, waxing and tinting, individual eyelash extensions and gel and acrylic nails. “The most popular treatments are the nails, brow and lash treatments,” says Zara, whose client base is ‘mostly local’ but some travel as far as Shrewsbury and Telford to see her. “My furthest
“I have always wanted to do this, even when I was in school I knew this was what I wanted. I trained with Creative Nail Design in Craven Arms and PHD waxing at the Ellisons Academy in Coventry.” As enthusiastic about her career choice now as she was at 16, Zara explains: “I love meeting new clients and making them feel good about themselves. It’s so rewarding knowing that just an eyebrow tidy or

This is something I have wanted for a very long time.” a gel polish can cheer people up.” The established business woman began studying education and training to allow her to teach other beauticians in the skills of the industry. After completing her course last month, Zara was over the moon when she announced to her facebook followers that she had passed. “Still in shock. Just want to make everyone aware that everyone can make their dreams a reality if they put
their mind to it! If I can do it anyone can. My poor little brain doesn’t know what’s hit it these past few weeks.” She continues: “Being in the industry for 13 years in June it’s time to take my career to the next level. This is something I have wanted for a very long time. I am over the moon to announce that after all the hard work and a lot of tears, I did it! I’m now an educator…” Zara will continue to run her business as usual, with the additional opportunities afforded to her as an educator. Now officially an Independent Accredited Training Academy, The Nail and Beauty Cabin will train other budding beauticians. Zara will offer training for anyone aged 16 years and over who wants to train in gel nails and polish brow and lash treatments and tinting, with more courses to be added in the future. “There is still a lot of work to do setting up the Academy, but I think it holds a wonderful future for me. I’d like to thank my husband, parents, in-laws, and all of my clients and friends for their amazing ongoing support all the way through this journey to qualify.” Search ‘The Nail Beauty Cabin – Zara Laurie’ on facebook and on Instagram: ‘tnbc_15_zalau_ mgbt_mgnt’

Summer eThics
There’s a huge emphasis on ethical businesses at the moment, so what exactly is available on the high street from the fashion world? Ethical isn’t just about going organic or vegan, but also covers the issues around waste, fabric sourcing and employment. If you’re imagining linen fabrics and beige colours, think again. We’ve trawled the internet and found these items from brands with strong sustainable values that fit in with this summer’s trends of pastel colours, strong denim, Crayola colours and fussy trims.

Summer season It can’t have escaped your attention that Gin is huge and in 2017 we consumed almost 47 million bottles of the stuff. But what next for the unstoppable juniper juice? Whatever your taste, there is almost certainly a flavoured gin to suit your palate (cactus gin anyone?), but the spirit is only part of the cocktail. Mixologists are busy coming up with new and exciting accompaniments for our G&T’s - aided by the high-quality tonics now available. They can be classic, playful or adventurous. Such is the versatility of gin. Personally, I can never walk past a lonely Negroni. Those in the know, and by that I mean the buying Gods at top end supermarkets, believe that premium is the future. Some even say that the premium market will be worth as much as the cheap and cheerful market in just a few short years. One of these buyers noted that mass produced gin saw sales increase by 30%. Impressive enough, but the sales of the smaller craft brands with provenance, full flavour and a good story behind them, saw an increase north of 160%! One thing is for certain, we just can’t get enough of the nation’s favourite spirit.

June marks the official start of the summer food season. British produce really shines this month. Try broad beans and peas, delicious gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries to truly taste the best of the season.
Fresh pea and broad bean pasta (www.waitrose.com/recipes)
Get all the flavours of a summer garden with this fresh, zingy salad. Sweet peas and buttery broad beans offer the perfect balance to the lively balsamic and salty cheese. Serves: 4
Ingredients
300g Conchiglie Rigate 500g Peas, shelled 500g Broad beans, shelled 5 tbsp Pelagonia aivar 1 tbsp Olive oil 1 tsp Balsamic vinegar 75g Goat’s cheese or feta, crumbled 2 tbsp Chopped fresh chives
Method
Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling water for 12 minutes, or according to packet instructions, adding the peas and beans for the last 2–3 minutes. Drain well and cool under running water. Transfer to a large serving dish. Add the aivar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and toss together until the pasta is coated. Scatter over the cheese, chives and a good grinding of black pepper and chill until ready to serve.
Wild berry profiteroles Choux pastry is one of the simplest pastries to make and the results are stunning and light.
Ingredients
250g tub mascarpone cheese 175ml ready-made chilled Crème Anglaise or vanilla custard 4 generous tbsp Bonne Maman Strawberry & Wild Strawberry Conserve 200g mixed fresh summer fruits Icing sugar, to dust For the choux pastry 60g strong plain flour 50g unsalted butter, diced 2 large eggs
Method
Heat the oven to 200C, fan oven 180C, gas mark 6. Line 1 or 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. To make the pastry, sift the flour onto another sheet of parchment. Put the butter in a small saucepan with 150ml cold water. Heat gently until the butter has melted, then bring to the boil. When the liquid is bubbling furiously remove the pan from the heat and pour in all the flour off the paper. Beat with a wooden spoon until the flour has been blended into the liquid. Gradually beat in the eggs until the mixture is a thick, smooth and glossy paste. Drop tablespoons of the choux paste onto the baking sheets, leaving about 2.5cm between them. Bake the choux buns for 25 – 30 minutes or until golden and crisp. Turn of the oven, make a small slit in each bun and return to the oven for a further 2-3 minutes to dry out. Cool on a wire rack. Meanwhile, put the mascarpone in a bowl and gradually beat in the custard until smooth. When ready to serve, halve the profiteroles and put 1 tsp of Bonne Maman Strawberry & Wild Strawberry Conserve in the bottom of each one. Fill with the mascarpone custard and top with a mixture of fruits. Replace the tops and dust with icing sugar. Serve straight away.

KOLIM Fine Dining bringing a taste of the real India to Oswestry To celebrate one of the group’s birthday we decided to try KOLIM Fine Dining on a Friday night. Located on Leg Street in Oswestry, the restaurant is a relative newcomer to the town and keen to prove its culinary prowess.
During the meal staff were very observant to our needs, ensuring that we had enough drinks and nothing was too much trouble
On arriving we received a warm welcome and were seated in the bar area before being shown to our table. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere and retains many of the building’s original architectural features combined with plush modern interior furniture and clever lighting, it provides the perfect setting for an evening meal. The staff were attentive and quick to take our drinks order.
pasanda, fish curry, chilli garlic masala and tandoori chicken tikka, all accompanied by garlic and peshwa naan, egg fried rice and coconut rice. All dishes were full of flavour and very generously sized, ensuring that we were not left hungry after. It was great to see the food stuck to genuine home cooked principals and did not come out in the normal neon bright colours we sometimes see in Indian restaurants.
As a restaurant that prides itself on authentic home cooked Indian, the menu offered classic curries and specialities. We started with poppadoms and a chutney tray, it contained all the favourites; mint sauce, mango chutney and onion salad, all were homemade and full of flavour. As starters, three of the group choose king prawn chaat, which had a solid tomato base and a hidden spice. The other guest chose the vegetable samosas, which were very full, not at all greasy and really flavoursome. So far, so good!
During the meal staff were very observant to our needs, ensuring that we had enough drinks and nothing was too much trouble.
The main courses followed. We ordered chicken tikka
The group had a great evening at KOLIM, would highly recommend it and can’t wait to go back again. Katie Stocker

How does Exchange and Completion differ in purchase of commercial property?
Solicitors, Solicitor-Advocates & Barristers
Q: I am in the process of purchasing my first commercial property for my business, having previously only rented premises. I have been advised that once we exchange contracts, completion will be about four weeks later. What is the difference between exchange and completion and should I have any concerns for this period of four weeks in-between the two dates? A: Exchange and completion are two stages in the buying process. Exchange refers to the exchange of contracts between the seller and buyer, when the agreed terms of the contract become legally binding between both parties and rom hereon neither party can pull out. Completion is the date at which the terms must be fulfilled by both parties, i.e. the seller ensuring they have vacated the property and the buyer transferring the purchase monies. The keys will be released to you on Completion. On Exchange the seller remains the legal owner whilst holding a legal estate on trust for the buyer and upholding a duty to manage and preserve the property in good condition. The buyer is still obliged to complete the purchase if the property is damaged during this time, though if the seller damages the property they will be liable in damages. Regarding you taking on any risk during the period of exchange and completion, this will depend on the sale and purchase contract. Unless otherwise stated in the contract, the buyer takes on the risk of something happening from the moment of exchange. However if the contract incorporates the Standard Commercial Property Condition 7 this provides that the risk passes to the buyer on completion and the buyer must arrange insurance from exchange. Do ascertain which contract you will be tied to and for complete peace of mind do seek advice from your solicitor on each stage of the process. Further information relating to this question is available from Hannah Fynn, a Solicitor with GHP Legal. has just launched a new mortgage specifically aimed at borrowers aged 55 plus. The maximum mortgage term they allow is up to the youngest borrowers 95th birthday.
with Darron Humphreys of Prudent Financial Planning
Q: I am 63 years of age, retired and looking for a mortgage. I have been turned down by several high street lenders already. What are my options, if any? A: The good news is that an increasing number of lenders are starting to show a more flexible approach to older and retired borrowers The nearer you are to retirement, lenders are generally more reluctant to lend to anyone who could struggle to repay in future. As most people’s income falls at retirement, lenders will only usually offer mortgages to borrowers who can prove they will pay off what they owe by the time they stop work. More choice for retired borrowers The fantastic news is that there is now more choice for retired borrowers. For example one particular lender

Flexibility with smaller lenders There are several other lenders, usually smaller building societies, which also take a flexible approach to older borrowers. For example, one will consider applications beyond the typical 75 age limit imposed by most lenders. Another has no maximum age limit, again taking a case by case approach, and there is even one who has also done away with a cap on the maximum age. The key communication is many of these above options are not available on the high street. Often a solution can be found, but because everyone’s situation is unique, a specialist eye is often required. We strongly recommend you seek guidance from reputable independent mortgage adviser. “Dem Bones, dem bones, dem dry bones” James Weldon Johnson National Osteoporosis day has just passed and although this disease is not really “dry” bones I thought the song sounded right! There are 180,000 fractures every year associated with this illness. One in five women will suffer an osteoporosis associated fracture and more than three million people are affected – mostly post-menopausal women but also men and sadly some children too. So, who gets this quite common complaint? If one of your parents had a hip fracture, you drink more than four units of alcohol (2 or 3 drinks) per day, you have had a previous osteoporosis fracture or suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, take steroid medication or have prolonged immobility then you are at risk. How would you know if you had it? The first clue might be a minor fall and a fracture.
There is effective treatment for the established disease which usually involves a weekly tablet that most patients tolerate fairly well. The diagnosis is usually made by having a simple scan measuring your bone mineral density – a DEXA scan. Anyone who has seemed to break a bone (what we call a fragility fracture) a bit too easily should have one. Now prevention. We strengthen our bones up to the age of about 35 and from then we lose bone structure gradually but inexorably. A good diet with low fat dairy produce and a fair protein intake helps, as does exercise. There is effective treatment for the established disease which usually involves a weekly tablet that most patients tolerate fairly well. This actually does increase your bone strength. Our local Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital is a recognised National Centre for osteoporosis and the scans and treatment are all available locally. I did my undergraduate training in Southampton. One winter it snowed quite heavily. Sadly, many elderly people were not prepared, ventured out and fell. The hospital was flooded with wrist, hip and vertebral fractures, having to admit many patients who lived alone. In fact, hip fractures carry quite a significant mortality (about 30%) in the older patient. So, all in all, better to avoid “Dem dry bones”. 56

Nostalgia
Down memory lane

THE PARK GATES
Cae Glas Park was formally opened to the public on 23 June 1910. The park was formally the grounds of the Cae Glas Mansion which was demolished in 1834 and the materials used to build numbers 34 and 36 Church Street. In the 1850s it was proposed to build a road through the area occupied by the park to connect Church Street with Welsh Walls and the land flanking the road was to be sold as building sites. Thankfully this came to nothing and in 1908 the then owner of the land, a Mr Thomas Jones of Rossett, offered to sell the land to Oswestry Town Council together with the properties 34 and 36 Church Street for £6,000 (well below its true value) conditional upon the area being used as a public park. He also offered to contribute £200 of the sale proceeds towards the laying out of the grounds. As can be seen in this image from around 1912, the entrance was fairly simple although there was already a bandstand in place. Following the First World War, memorials to the fallen were being erected in cities and towns across the country and Oswestry chose to commemorate the fallen with a magnificent set of pillars
and gates which were duly erected in the 1920s on a much wider park entrance. Although the war is always thought of as the 1914-18 war it did not officially end until 1919 (in 1918 there was an armistice rather than a peace treaty) and so the gates carry the date 1919, the year that the war officially ended.

foot and mouth outbreak in 1967 hastened its demise. In the 1912 image the chimney of the Dorsett Owen Brewery which occupied the old cinema site can be clearly seen. Many of the properties that were present in English Walls have since been demolished although a couple on the left of the picture still exist. The imposing building in the centre rear of the image is, I believe, the showrooms of ironmongers Edward. Thomas & Co., the front of the property being on the Cross.
THE CATTLE MARKET
The Smithfield Cattle Market was opened in July 1849 on a 2.5-acre field known as Cae Tomley. The land had been purchased by Oswestry Corporation for £1,050. For the next 120 years (until its closure in 1969) the Smithfield was the heart of the town. The increasing use of road vehicles to transport the animals made it ever more difficult to access the town centre site and the disastrous
It is also interesting to see Hall, Wateridge & Owen in evidence. The company still exists as Halls, having been in existence since 1845.

Motoring
Clocking up the smiles Journalist, car enthusiast and new dad Richard Jones takes the Peugeot 5008 for a test drive with baby Isabelle
When asked by a friend ‘what’s the best thing about the car you’re driving this month?’, I said it has an extraordinarily large boot with enough room for two cricket bags and three sets of golf clubs. This however isn’t entirely true, the Peugeot 5008 is incredibly spacious, but without doubt the coolest thing about the car is the fact the Peugeot logo projects onto the floor from light beams concealed in the door handles when you unlock the car at night time. In fact, this neat little touch is so cool that upon discovering it I kept Isabelle up way past her bedtime the following night to show her. Oddly she showed little interest, rubbed her eyes and looked at me as if to say ‘bedtime daddy’. Having failed to impress Belle with the lights, which also shine on the ground when you open the doors in the dark to warn you of muddy puddles, I was more determined than ever to make our ‘daddydaughter’ adventure one of the most enjoyable to date. The next morning we headed for Chester to watch ‘mummy’ compete in the half marathon – which she did in a very respectable 1.55 – and then it was back home via Oswestry for a spot of lunch and some good old fashioned playtime in the playground in Cae Glas Park. The drive to Chester provided us with a great opportunity to truly test the potentials of the £31,810 rangetopping GT Line 5008. Having driven the previous generation 5008 I can confirm the revised model is a big improvement and is now as good 64 | Oswestry life
as the smaller 3008, although being the big brother it has a third row of seats in the back. These can be folded down to give you the extralarge boot space I mentioned earlier, which is also perfect for packing the buggies, trikes and toys needed for a stress-free daddy-daughter day. The 5008 is comfortable to drive and because it now has a slightly longer body and some added weight it is much smoother and more composed. Belle seemed to agree; falling asleep in the back before we got to the bottom of our lane (although that might have had something to do with the fact she had kindly been up since five o’clock that morning). While the exterior of the 5008 divides opinions, the interior is a real success. It uses the same ‘i-Cockpit’ design as the 3008 and the result is striking. As a family we loved the futuristic look and found the combination of the large touchscreen and toggle switches for the main commands worked really well. Performance figures of 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds and a combined fuel economy of 6.14mph are impressive too, although not nearly
as impressive as the energy levels Isabelle showed once we got to the playground inside the bloomin’ beautiful park. The last time we took her to a playground she was a bit too young and showed little interest, but now almost 14-months old she was in heaven. The smile on her face as we pushed her in the swings was a joy to behold, as was the non-stop laughter as we bounced her around on the seesaw. And just like the way Isabelle is altering all the time, so is the car market and few cars highlight the current trend better than the 5008. First introduced in 2009 as a peoplecarrier the 5008 failed to set the car-buying market alight as people moved away from MPVs in favour of crossovers. Peugeot being the clever manufacturer they are quickly recognised this and for this secondgeneration 5008 they have simply stretched the already popular 3008 to include two additional seats. Genius!

LAST WORD
Tom Jones (27) owner of Liar Liar Where do you live? Weston Rhyn Have you always lived locally? Pretty much, although once I decided I was going to open a coffee shop I spent time in North Wales, London and Bristol gaining some more experience.
What schools/college did you go to? Weston Rhyn Primary School, Rhyn Park secondary school and then WNSC where I did a football scholarship and didn’t do too much academically. What made you want to start your own business? No matter what job I’ve done I always wanted to do it to the best of my ability which is rewarding on a personal level, but I didn’t always feel it was appreciated. I always wanted a situation I could give 100% and feel satisfied but couldn’t find that working for somebody else so decided I wanted to create that environment myself. How long have you been open for now? We opened 5 September 2016, which has flown by but also feels like we have been here forever at the same time! How easy/difficult was it to start your own business in the town? For me one of the main reasons I opened in Oswestry was because of the support I needed from family and friends to get the place ready and then help build custom. That has been invaluable. I feel very grateful that people really seem to have bought into what we are trying to do and been very supportive. 66
| Oswestry life
Where did the name Liar Liar come from? I always wanted something that would sell the ethics of the place. For me Liar Liar is all about using ethically source products that come from passionate producers. Originally, I was coming up with things like ‘Honest Coffee’ or ‘Coffee with a conscience’ but I guess I didn’t think it was edgy enough. Trying to explain this before I got the shop open was very difficult, but I think now people can see what it’s about and seems very well received. Why do you think Liar Liar has been such a success? I like to think that it’s because we try and do things right. I was always confident of serving some tasty coffee, but I think the staff and customers have managed to create a really nice atmosphere. I personally really enjoy spending my time there. When you get time off, what do you enjoy doing to unwind? I’ve got a two-year-old daughter called Primrose, that means I spend most of my days’ off trying to wear her out, which is great for me because I feel like I’m reliving my youth. I’ve also finally managed to free up some time for exercise which has helped a lot. Mainly football and cycling. Where are your favourite places in Oswestry to eat, drink and shop? I probably don’t get out and about the town as much as I would like but the Townhouse, Heat and Fat Rabbit are great. Most presents come from Barkers or Booka and my favourite place is probably the Bailey Head. Sometimes I enjoy their beers a little too much!
Do you have any advice for other budding entrepreneurs who are considering setting up a business in the town? Go for it! If you are passionate about what you do, then people will buy into it. If possible go and work for a similar business that is successful and work out why. And then don’t try to run before you can walk! What does the future hold for Liar Liar? I’m a little obsessed with details and even though we have come such a long way since we opened I still feel we can improve our current offering. Also, one of the main aims was to inspire others to improve their coffee offering. Slowly I’ve been approached by different local businesses which is awesome, but I hope there is many more to come. I also like the idea of collaborating with local businesses which I still haven’t been able to put into action. Finally, what’s the best thing about living in Oswestry? I’m a family man, so being surrounded by family and friends is awesome. It’s also great to be a part of a town on the up. I think all small market towns have been through a hard time but to see new businesses opening up all the time and doing well is great to see. With the Oswestry Bid being a success, I think it’s an exciting time to be around the town. Liar Liar is located at 2 Albion Hill, Oswestry and is open 8.30am – 4pm Mon-Fri and 9am – 2pm on Sunday.
