Cae Glas looking to score with Arthurs support

A 20 year-plus partnership between a motor dealer and a cricket club has been further strengthened for the season now underway. Arthurs Vauxhall has been allocated four matches that they will sponsor Cae Glas Cricket Club of the Shropshire Cricket League. Oswestry-based Arthurs will sponsor matches next month and in August featuring Cae Glas 1st and 2nd X1’s together with a tour fixture Cricketer Nigel Evans who is also the club’s sponsorship officer said: “Our relationship with Arthurs of Oswestry goes back more than 20 years and over that time players and officials have enjoyed a lot of Vauxhall cars. “We are most pleased to receive further sponsorship to support our teams for this season because we can’t exist without the backing of local businesses and Arthurs has been particularly generous over the years for which we are very grateful.” Above: In the team line-up at Arthurs Vauxhall is left to right Nick Broadbent, life member, Nigel Evans, Joanne Aird, Arthurs Group, and Janet Marsden, Cae Glas vice chair and non-playing member

An Oswestry mum of two is overwhelmed by the response to a charity event she is organising this month. Nia Morris and her husband Ian and daughter Alice from Oswestry decided to hold the charity event to thank the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance for transporting their daughter Florence all the way from Leeds down to Wrexham

“Not a lot of people realise this incredible service is available for children.” Maelor hospital with great care. Nia told Oswestry Life magazine; “we had a difficult summer in 2017, as a family we would like to raise a nice amount of money to help families who find themselves in a similar situation to us.

Search for sopranos

“All monies will go directly to the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance, not a lot of people realise this incredible service is available for children.”

The Scholars & Gentlemen performs to professional standard and specialise in Renaissance music. Prospective singers should be competent with little or no vibrato and able to sight read or learn at second sight. Anyone interested in joining, should contact director Mike Donkin on 01691 649933 or email mvdonkin@aol.com.

The fun filled family evening will be held at The Venue on Saturday 28 July. The event will consist of a hog roast, charity auction and live music. Tickets are £15 each or a table of 10 for £120 and available from Nia on 07772597256 or Emma on 07949 567882.

Food Festival returns The ever-popular Oswestry Food & Drink Festival, probably the friendliest food festival in Shropshire, is back for it’s 12th year - and once again, it is free entry and takes place right in the heart of Oswestry town centre. The very best specialist food and drink exhibitors from the region will be baking and brewing to bring their delicious wares for your delectation across the weekend of Saturday July 14th and Sunday July 15th from 10am till 4pm each day. The streets will be alive with aromas of African, Middle-Eastern, Malaysian, Indian, and Spanish cooking. Plus they are showcasing the pick of local food from sausages to hog roast, and crepes to ciders. For the sweet of tooth, there’s traditional cakes, cupcakes and fancies galore!

On Sunday, 15 July, there’ll be Reggae in the Park for those who just want to chill with their festival goodies to some great music. “We’re really looking forward to the weekend,” says festival director John Waine, “we have our festival favourites that visitors love to see every year to stock up on tasty treats, plus specialist exhibitors introducing themselves to an Oswestry audience for the first time. “We’re really excited to have Sabor de Amor exhibiting, finalists on the BBC’s Top of the Shop programme with Tom Kerridge - their paella sauces wowing the judges and tasters alike.” To find out more, visit www. oswestryfoodfestival.co.uk Below: The streets come alive for Oswestry Food Festival

College family fun day a huge success

North Shropshire College (NSC) recently held its annual Family Fun Day at the Oswestry Campus. This year’s event raised £1000 for two very worthy charities, The Isabelle Lottie Foundation and CRY For Matthew. Lucy Evans, marketing and customer service manager at NSC said: “We are overjoyed with the success of this year’s event. We had a fantastic day, with glorious weather, and a great selection of stalls and food. The College would like to extend its thanks to all of the stallholders who attended, to the local businesses that donated amazing prizes for our raffle, and our sponsors who have supported us greatly.” Above: Charlie Taaffe age 10 who was part of the Border Counties Display Squad, holding a giant cockroach from the Walford Campus Animal Management Centre

Are you sitting comfortably? Staff from a family-owned Shropshire firm are sitting pretty after creating a seat with a difference. The team from TG Enviro – part of the Tudor Griffiths Group in Ellesmere – have converted an eight-yard skip into a unique seating area that is now on tour around trade and agricultural shows up and down the country. Kevin Gardiner, TG Enviro divisional manager, said the new seat had created a great deal of interest, and had already made its debut at several local events. “The design for the seat came from our waste manager John Pugh – we had discussed how it would be a great way to promote our skip hire services, and so we came up with a plan of how to convert the skip and we’re delighted with the result.” Left: Visitors try out the TG skip seat

A hopping success! All sponsorship is now in from the 2018 Oswestry Bunny Run and it has been presented to a local charity. The 5k run, which first launched in 2016, raises money each year for local causes. This year the event supported The Movement Centre, an Oswestry based charity working with children and their families to provide a specialist therapy called Targeted Training. The 2018 event raised over £860 to help support the charity’s work and has raised over £3000 for local causes since it started 2 years ago. “The Oswestry Bunny Run is a fantastic event, and we were delighted to have been selected as the charity that was supported this year”, said Victoria HandburyMadin, head of fundraising and marketing at The Movement Centre. “We want to say a huge thank you to Oswestry Bunny Run, the supporters and everyone who took part in the event.” Pictured from left, James Manford organiser of Oswestry Bunny Run with Curtis Langley of The Movement Centre

How we gave it a year on national television In her own words, business woman and star of ITV’s Give it a Year, Katrina Boydon reveals what it was really like making the show that put her glamping, wedding and events venue, Barnutopia, on a national stage. After living abroad for many years, my husband Steve and I moved back to Britain in 2014 and set up a successful glamping site at Tanycoed Farm near Oswestry. We pondered what to do with the long barn on the property. Too big to use for accommodation, the barn had not been used for cattle in over 25 years. Previously an army barracks at Park Hall, the barn needed some serious attention before it could be used for anything. We had an idea... At the end of summer 2016, we received planning permission to develop Barnutopia as a wedding and event venue. As we debated where to start, we were contacted by a production company looking for candidates for a new ITV series Give it a year. The producer said they would like to film us over a 12-month period as we set up our new wedding barn. Ideally, they wanted to film the first wedding at the end of the year. Initially, we were not inclined to go ahead. We have seen many television shows where the objective seems to be to find fault and criticise the participants. Our venue is in a stunning Shropshire location and the glamping accommodation and barns are clean and wellequipped. However, it is an ex-farm set-up and has its share of broken walls, fences that need fixing and

wildlife. We give no guarantees that you will not encounter the odd spider. The producer assured us that this was a different kind of TV show. The series was to be a celebration of British businesses. It would feature a well-known celebrity business guru offering advice along the way. Finally, we agreed, but it was not without some trepidation that we

We were sworn to secrecy for the duration of filming and could not see the finished episode before it went live on national television signed the contract, liability waiver and confidentiality agreement. We were sworn to secrecy for the duration of filming and could not see the finished episode before it went live on national television. With some excitement, they told us the name of the celebrity guru, Baroness Karren Brady. We looked back blankly. Twenty years living abroad meant we had never heard of “The First Lady of Football” nor had we seen her in “The Apprentice” as an aide to Lord Sugar. The TV crew dropped in regularly over the year to film progress on the barn and the all-important licence for wedding ceremonies. The couple who booked the first wedding ceremony for August 2017 also agreed to appear on camera. The production team filmed us meeting

and showing them progress on the barn. They even had me ask the bride what would happen if we didn’t secure the licence. That question did not go down well. Baroness Brady first visited when the barn was a broken-down shell with rotten window-frames and weeds growing inside. She came back at the end of the year to review the finished barn and film the wedding. We found her to be friendly, down to earth and an astute businesswoman. The process of filming was time-consuming and repetitive. Sometimes the crew would have to film the same sequence several times to get it right. That said, we found them to be honest and open and true to life when filming. There were no tricks and they were diligent about ensuring they got facts and figures right. This meant several long conversations with their in-house business and finance expert. The hardest part was waiting for the program to broadcast many months after filming finished. In the end, it was worth it. Barnutopia is one of the success stories and it brought a tear to my eye seeing the difference a year makes. We were thrilled with the way we were portrayed and consider it a year well spent. For more information visit www.barnutopia.com.

Heritage

The town’s hidden gem Known as Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre or The Heritage Centre, this building is one of Oswestry’s most iconic and charming. Tucked away behind the parish Church of St. Oswald and across the road from The Wynnstay Hotel, this timber framed building nestles like a hidden treasure gem at the rear of the church yard. If you’ve never visited, we think you will be pleasantly surprised. First stop – go into the Tourist Information Centre. Oswestry Borderland Tourism run the TIC and they are passionate about all things Oswestry. Karen the TIC Manager explains: “Many people now rely on online information, which we do provide via our web site, twitter and facebook, but we think there is nothing better than meeting people face to face to be able to help them with any questions they have. Our team are ambassadors for Oswestry and we have great local knowledge which we love to share and we know what to ask visitors to help them make the most of their visit. “We try to visit all the local attractions so we have the personal experience to pass on to visitors and we love it when people say they must come back as they love the town and there is so much to do in the area. “We sell local souvenirs and a great range of local walking, history and transport books and there is always a mix of local arts and crafts on sale too.

oldest schools in the country. Take care as you climb the slightly wonky staircase to the first floor and then enjoy the wonderful beams and slopes of the upstairs exhibition space. There are exhibitions all year here which feature local crafts people and artists and the School Room also features information about Wilfred Owen and other local Oswestrians such as the novelist, Barbara Pym. Sue Miller, the exhibition organiser, is co-ordinating the Annual Oswestry and Shropshire Art Competition to coincide with the 2018 Wilfred Owen Festival in November. “The annual Oswestry and Shropshire Art Competition is a highlight of our year,” says Sue, “bringing many local and some not-so-local artists together to exhibit two pieces of work for two months in October and November with cash prizes sponsored by Oswestry Town Council. This year the theme ’World War Then - Poetry and Peace Now’ is reflecting the Wilfred Owen Festival. To coincide with the festival we are also hosting an exhibition by local sculptor, Tim Turner, of preparatory drawings and maquettes for the new Wilfred Owen Statue which will be unveiled in Cae Glas Park in November.”

“We do receive all sorts of requests for information and we do try to answer the queries.” Once you have picked up enough information to make you want to tell the world about Oswestry or just be a local tourist, take some time to explore the rest of the building. The building itself is one of the star attractions of the town, it has been here since 1407 and was one of the

Recipe

Summer refreshers Now the weather is getting warmer most people are looking for something refreshing and cooling to drink. Cider is usually extremely popular over the summer and Stonehouse Brewery has just launched Oswestry’s own sparkling cider, Elevate. Elevate is a fruity and refreshing cider that bursts with apple flavour, the perfect fruity drink on a warm day. Craft ale drinkers are also looking for something refreshing to drink, and we can see more and more people trying some alternative styles such as Saisons and Sours. Both of these have far sharper flavours than traditional British Ales and have a clean, sour aftertaste. Obviously in warm weather people are drinking lots of gin, either as gin and tonic, a gin and lemonade spritzer, gin cocktails or even straight sipping gin. While some people still prefer traditional juniper led gins the craze for fruity and crazy gins still continues. This summer the hottest gins to look out for are Cherry Bakewell, any orange/marmalade gins, Sweet Violet, and of course, for all Oswestrians, our own Henstone’s.

Summer berry brioche Recipe development by Moyra Fraser. (Serves 6-8) This is a play on the classic summer pudding – it has the same delicious flavour and texture but without the worry of turning it out! Serve with a generous dollop of crème fraiche.

Ingredients 6 tbsp Bonne Maman Black Cherry Conserve 200ml pomegranate and raspberry juice 225g brioche bread, cut into large, bite-sized pieces 225g fresh raspberries or blueberries 225g fresh, pitted cherries 225g strawberries, halved or sliced Crème fraiche, to serve

Method Put the Bonne Maman Black Cherry Conserve and juice into a small saucepan and heat together gently until the conserve has melted. Bring to the boil and bubble for 2-3 minutes until lightly thickened and syrupy. Tip all the brioche into a deep, glass serving bowl and pour over the warm syrup. Put a small plate on top, press down and add a weight. Chill overnight.

Spoon the fresh fruit over the brioche and top with spoonfuls of crème fraiche before serving.

Cook’s tips

We used pomegranate juice as it’s not too sweet but any red fruit juice such as blackcurrant or blueberry could also be used with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Take a seat at...

The Lime Kiln Porth-y-waen, near Oswestry After a bank holiday weekend away at the wonderful seaside town of New Quay, Wales and a warm, sticky car journey back home, my partner and I decided to stop off for a spot of lunch. We had heard that the Lime Kiln in Porth-y-waen was under new management and the food was excellent, so we stopped off for a well-earned lunch. As soon as we walked into the pub, we were greeted by Sara, the new manager who was extremely welcoming. She explained that she had only recently taken over and was happy to have such a wonderful country pub. She emphasised her support of local producers and mentioned Keegans Butchers in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llynclys Hall Farm Shop. We had a lovely ice cold refreshing drink whilst choosing from their excellent menu. With a great choice of starters including crab and prawn salad, whitebait and pate with homemade chutney to mention just a few, we decided on the smoked salmon and crème fresh croutes and I chose the pan seared scallops with beetroot puree. It seemed only a few moments and our starters arrived, and the smell just enveloped the restaurant. My scallops were delicious and moist and with the beetroot puree providing the perfect accompaniment – a lovely consistency whilst not overpowering the flavour and texture of the scallops. My partner Steve’s smoked salmon and crème fraiche croutes were a generous portion and with the mixture of crème and crunch were just delicious! Yes, I had to try one as they looked so good.

“Steve’s smoked salmon and crème fraiche croutes were a generous portion and with the mixture of crème and crunch were just delicious!“ After a full-bodied glass of merlot our main meals soon arrived, with a lovely choice of homecooked food Steve chose the bacon cheese burger served with homemade chips and I selected off the daily specials board and went for the chicken and bacon salad which looked fresh, crisp and very tasty. Steve’s beef burger looked and smelled amazing also, it would take a healthy appetite to finish the dish, but I knew he was up to the challenge!

and with a side portion of the homemade chips it as the prefect lunch. We were asked if we would like anything off the desert menu and despite the choice of refreshing lemon cheesecake or homemade apple strudel we could not eat another thing. I have to say our unplanned stop off at the Lime Kiln was a wonderful end to our long weekend and we will definitely be visiting again. This little country treasure is a wonderful family friendly pub where traditional homecooked pub food is available at both lunchtime and evenings seven days a week. Call 01691 830111 to book a table. Sam and Steve Sargent

With a burger stack which consisted of bacon, cheese, onion, lettuce and tomato on a soft floured burger bun, the hardest decision was how to attempt to eat it. After cutting it in half and devouring it, he did not prove me wrong - the slate was completely cleared, not even one of the delicious homemade chips was leftover. It was a complete triumph as Steve told me that he did not even have room for a pudding, a rarity. My salad consisted of tasty succulent chicken pieces and crispy bacon served on a bed of mixed green leaves and a drizzle of wholegrain mustard dressing Oswestry life | 25

The Electric Jungle trend takes the shapes and objects of the natural world – we’re talking tropical leaves, animal print and the odd chameleon – and makes them, well, unnatural. Q&A

with Darron Humphreys of Prudent Financial Planning

Q: Will I save money by switching from my

variable rate mortgage and what types of mortgages are out there to replace this?

A: Presuming a switch is beneficial wouldn’t necessarily be correct, however a recent study carried out by the Financial Conduct Authority has found that close to half of the two million borrowers in the UK on standard variable rate would benefit from switching. They say that these households could save an average of £1,000 a year by switching onto a new deal. When you reach the end of a fixed rate period, before moving onto your lenders standard variable rate, you should be given the opportunity to choose from their range of retention products. These are deals made available to current clients to entice them to a further period of continued borrowing.

It shouldn’t be assumed however that these are the best deals out there. Lenders have a strong appetite for new business also and so it is always worth looking at the comparable costs of switching borrowing to a new lender. Mortgages are personal to your circumstances. The aspirations that you had as a first-time buyer could be very different 10 years on. You may feel that you’d be better suited to an offset mortgage now or switching from interest only to repayment. Your financial situation at this moment might dictate the route you need to take. Speaking to an independent mortgage adviser would be advisable. Since they have no bias to any particular lender or type of mortgage, their advice will be completely impartial and with your best interests at heart. Seeking this advice may open doors that you never knew were possible and could save you a substantial amount of money. Prudent Financial Planning Services offers independent mortgage advice. Please call us on 01691 653335 visit www.prudentltd.co.uk or email dphumphreys@prudentltd.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

produced a risk and method statement and also worked early in the mornings until late to get the job finished on time.”

Jonathan Roberts Roofing has renovated and rebuilt the portico roof at the main entrance to the Wynnstay Hotel on Church Street, which took less than one week from start to finish.

Jonathan who has been roofing for over 30 years, says: “I have carried out lots of work at the Wynnstay Hotel and have a good working relationship with the management.”

Using a 20-year felt roof system from a leading manufacturer for which Jonathan is an approved contractor for, the roof area was stripped and prepared for a high specification self-adhesive 3mm underlay and a 5mm black mineral coating. New decking was laid before drip trims were fitted over the walls. In order to meet strict health and safety standards, they worked alongside Hughes Scaffolding. “We use an outside firm to assess jobs like this for us as the roof is in a very public place with lots of pedestrians passing through,” said Jonathan, owner of Jonathan Roberts Roofing. “We

When investing in a borehole for your property, whether commercial or domestic, they will help you assess the feasibility of an installation and also identify the potential cost savings based on your current metered charges. They provide a complete installation package, which includes a storage tank, variable speed distribution pumps, pressure vessel, control system and, if required, water treatment. They also specialise in Ground Source Heating systems. Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year and this energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water. They drill boreholes from which a ground source heat pump can extract, convert and transfer energy for domestic properties, commercial facilities and leisure complexes.

The benefits of ground source heating systems include: • On average, 75% free renewable energy • Government incentives available • Fixed and stable energy costs • Lower carbon emissions • Constant heat 24 hours a day • Fuels both hot water and heating • Directly replaces your existing boiler • Reversible to provide cooler temperatures in summer • Can add value to property If you have high water or energy bills why not contact Dragon Drilling today for a free site assessment to see if they could start saving you money. Simply call 01824707777 or email admin@dragondrilling.co.uk for more information.

Nostalgia

Down memory lane Oswald Road This is one of the relatively new thoroughfares within the town, having only been constructed in 1860 to serve the newly built Cambrian and GWR railway stations. Prior to this Leg Street continued unbroken to its junction with Beatrice Street and Albion Hill. The area between the Queens Hotel and the lower part of Leg Street was occupied by a drapery establishment housed in a building known as London House. To the rear of this premises was a residence and a large building which operated as a commercial school. The creation of the road meant that the water from the castle fields, which crossed Beatrice Street just below the Plough Inn and met with the water which flowed from English Walls at the Coney Green, had to be diverted. These waterways had been created following an outbreak of Cholera in 1832 and were designed to remove the dangerous, stagnant water away from the town centre into a pond known as Hilditch’s pool and the mud pits which then existed at Coney Green. Following its construction, the land that bounded the new road was sold in 1866 for various commercial enterprises such as the Mathews Hotel and the Queens itself was extended to cope with the influx of visitors following the ‘railway boom’.

The Cross This view of the corner of Bailey Street and Cross Street is dominated by the bank building which is an early 20th century addition. The site originally consisted of a block of three shops containing a confectioners, milliners and saddlers. The two shops nearest the Cross were demolished in 1870 and a new building, Compton House, erected on the 44

site. The third building had been incorporated into Compton House at a later date and the whole block was sold to the National Provincial Bank in the late 19th century who subsequently demolished it and erected the building that still occupies the site today. As I have stated before, Oswestry was never short of shoe and boot stores with four in evidence on this picture. Interestingly, Oliver’s and Stead & Simpson withstood the test of time and were both going strong well into the 21st century. The hand cart on the righthand side of the card bears the lettering Sigarro which was, of course, the grocery business that traded from Llwyd Mansion and became Dutton’s Sigarro Stores.

Summer Finery

I can’t acknowledge that it’s summer until I come across plenty of butterflies on my walks. Like wild flowers you’ll see different butterflies at different times of the summer, depending on the food plants for the species, We all study the life cycle of a butterfly at school, but very rarely see anything except the adult, unless it’s the caterpillars munching our cabbages. The first butterflies I saw this year were in January on Moelydd Hill. A particularly warm couple of days brought out some of hibernating Peacocks. They looked a bit tatty, but great to see none-the-less. The real joy is when the Orange Tips appear from mid-April. The males are unmistakeable, but the females are more like a Small Whites, though they have different under-wings. These butterflies are always on the move and difficult to photograph. Next come the butter coloured Brimstones (thought to be the source of the name “butterfly”) and the Holly Blues.

TOP TO BOTTOM: COMMA; RED ADMIRAL; COMMON BLUE; MALE ORANGE TIP; GATEKEEPPER; PAINTED LADY

SPECKLED WOOD

As summer draws on, we have the Peacocks, Commas, Speckled Woods, Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admirals, Gatekeepers, Common Blues and a host of others. Britain has 59 resident butterflies and a few more migrants arriving to breed when the weather is warm. Llanymynech Rocks is a particularly good spot for butterfly spotting during the summer months. The Painted Lady butterflies start to arrive in early June, migrating all the way from Northern Africa. They lay their eggs on nettles and mallows, and these mature in August and September. In late autumn the whole British population dies or migrates back to Africa.

Did you know?

reflecting light. A group of butterflies is called a flutter, kaleidoscope or swarm. Many butterflies taste with their feet. Butterflies are cold blooded and can’t fly when it’s cold. Butterflies hide from the rain. Being hit by a raindrop would be equivalent to us being hit by a 20lb bowling ball!

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep

Eyes of children

By Joanna Cannon

Is buying a book for someone else ever a good idea? Well on this occasion it was. I picked up The Trouble with Goats and Sheep with slight nervousness, my friend would be asking me ‘was it any good?’ If you were a fan of The Famous Five as a child and wanted to be like Julian, Dick, Anne or Georgina (not forgetting Timmy the dog), then as an adult ‘Goats and Sheep’ would definitely appeal. As I started to read the book, memories of being a youngster in the mid-1970s, playing in the street and having the freedom to visit neighbours’ houses started to stir. Images of sunny days and the prospect of solving a crime took me back to those wonderful days of innocence and imagination and Five on a Treasure Island. The uncomplicated world of Grace and Tilly change for one summer, when a mystery starts to unfold.

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, published by Borough Press Available from Amazon. co.uk, paperback £6.47 Mrs Creasy is missing and the girls systematically decide to unravel the secrets that their cul-de-sac has to offer. They start to interview their neighbours gathering vital and important ‘evidence’ along the way. But all is not as it seems and if there is one thing we should take from the book, it is that we should not judge a book by its cover. A very endearing story of delightful naivety.

Children see sunflowers as Van Gogh intended. Bright full of life not static in a vase on a marble mantelpiece but alive in a sun-kissed, walled garden, tall and vibrant; heads to the sky. Children see sunflowers as Van Gogh painted. In deepest yellow and gold and with their imagination they recreate it, sprinkling with brown, orange and green against a backdrop of blue.

Was it any good? – most definitely. Debbie Lloyd

HEALTH

Dr Paul Middleton

Loneliness

‘Loneliness or the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty’ Mother Theresa You might be surprised that a health column has loneliness as its theme. Loneliness affects two million of us. 23% of the over 75 age group can go whole days without speaking to anyone and feeling lonely carries the same health risks as obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes per day as well as increasing the risk of dementia by over 60%. So, loneliness is both common and a serious health risk. I remember seeing dozens of lonely elderly patients, often with mobility problems and little or no family. I was probably the only person who had face-toface contact with them that day – sometimes the only person for days on end. I felt guilty at the short period of time I had to spend with them. They all had stories to tell about their lives. One little old man in

his nineties told me about running in the National Athletics Championship at Crystal Palace Stadium. A well-dressed elderly lady had performed professionally in Covent Garden. If we listen these people are fascinating. The days of large extended families living close to each other are mostly over and many of this age group find themselves isolated, unwell and seemingly forgotten. It was terribly sad to see. I often thought the quality of a society could be judged by how well it cared for its elderly. At times we do not do well here. So, what can we all do? Perhaps we should ask ourselves who might be lonely in our local neighbourhood? Could we volunteer some of our expertise? Maybe just donate to a suitable charity when we have the chance? Maybe just say hello more often? Patients often told me: “Old age does not come alone” but maybe they should have said: “Old age makes me alone”. If we are lucky enough we will all age – hopefully society will have reacted to this epidemic of loneliness and we will be better cared for.

Award win for law firm

An Oswestry law firm has picked up a prestigious national award for the second year running. Lanyon Bowdler won the Best Trainer in a Small Firm award at the LawCareers.Net (LCN) Training and Recruitment Awards 2018 held in London. Colin Spanner, Lanyon Bowdler’s training partner, said: “To win this award for the second year running is amazing, particularly when you think of the standard of opposition from across the country. “We are delighted to be recognised for the work we do in training. Our programme is very important to us because these young people are the future of our firm and indeed the legal profession.”

Cash boost for college Prom Students at Derwen College will be making the final arrangements to their annual Prom thanks to a generous cash boost from DPA architects, in Oswestry. The £400 donation made by the Oswestry-based firm will be used to pay for a live band and refreshments for the students as they arrive at the Oscars-themed party, which takes place at Derwen College campus in Gobowen. Gavin Porritt and Gareth Edwards, directors of DPA said: “DPA are delighted to sponsor the Derwen Prom this year – it is a well-deserved charity and we always enjoy working with the college and meeting the students.” TOP: DPA Directors Gareth Edwards and Gavin Porritt with Derwen College students: from left, Ashley Beech, Megan Eayrs, Gareth Edwards, Gavin Porritt, and Rachel Pickford.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s Victoria Wilson with

What is the best way to provide for our disabled child after we die? Q: We are now in our early seventies and our disabled son lives at home with carers coming in to help day and night. We are reasonably well off and would like him to continue living in the same home environment when we are gone. Our daughter has said she and her family will move back to the family home with him but we are not sure how best to provide for his care. As she will have to take charge of the funding for his care, should we leave his half of our estate to his sister? A:

This would not be advisable because if you left your son’s inheritance to his sister it would by law be her money. This means that if her circumstances changed the money intended to provide for your son could pass to someone else, for example through a divorce settlement or to one of her beneficiaries if she died. Equally, leaving gifts directly to someone with learning difficulties can cause problems. For example, means tested benefits and local authority funded support packages could be cut and then have to be reinstated, possibly with different entitlements, once the self-funding source runs out. In addition to all of this is the danger that it could leave your son in a very vulnerable position and open to financial abuse and exploitation if his sister experienced a life change. The safest way to protect your son’s future would be to provide for him through a Trust. This can be created in your Will and set to commence upon your death, or it can be created during your lifetime and start immediately with a further bequest to the Trust in your Will. Your solicitor can advise on all available options specific to your financial circumstances and your son’s ongoing needs.

Further information relating to this question is available from Victoria Wilson, a Partner with GHP Legal. Get into Golf month tees off

Oswestry will be celebrating Get into Golf month with lots of free opportunities. Local clubs are backing the drive to bring many more people into the sport. Their coaching professionals will be out and about, giving children and adults the chance to try the game. Mark Romasiuk, England Golf’s club support officer, promises plenty of action. Activities will feature golf at festivals, at football clubs, in the parks and involve business people. There will be special equipment for children to have a go and a blow-up net for the adults, and the support and encouragement of PGA professionals. “We really want to create a buzz about golf,” said Mark. “We want people to be talking about golf and trying the game. Golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to make new friends, so our message is come along and give it a go!” On 13 July and 1 August – there will be the

“Golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to make new friends, so our message is come along and give it a go!” opportunity to have a go at golf in Cae Glas Park. Golf clubs getting involved include Oswestry Golf Club and Llanymynech Golf Club. The announcement of golf month follows the recent relaunch of England Golf’s Get into Golf campaign. It’s been given a bold, modern look with the clear message that there’s a welcome for everyone in golf. Clubs will be highlighting their Get into Golf opportunities during the month. Motoring

Clocking up the smiles Journalist, car enthusiast and new dad Richard Jones takes the new Mercedes X-Class out with baby Isabelle This month Isabelle and I have been cruising around in the most luxurious pickup truck on the market. Think pickups and you traditionally think of farmers and battered strawstrewn trucks but the Mercedes X-Class is a very different beast. For many you could argue the need for two vehicles has gone because, even though the luxury market comes with a price tag to match (£34,100 in the case of my test car), the X-Class blends working abilities with car-like comfort. The X-Class is Mercedes’ rival to the Volkswagen Amorak and the Ford Ranger. It is based on the Nissan Navara but I can assure you the comparisons don’t run far. There are three trims to choose from – Pure, Progressive and Power. I had the range-topping Power trim with electrically adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, keyless entry, climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear LED lights and electrically folding door mirrors. I expect the mid-range Progressive trim will be most popular, but even the Pure trim includes reversing cameras and Mercedes’ Audio 20 infotainment system. On the road we were impressed with how comfortable and quiet the X250d was. For a vehicle of its size it handles really well and the suspension soaks up bumps in the road just like you’d expect of a car. It had a seven speed automatic gear box and despite its rugged looks it still returned 35.8mpg. We used it to go to The Venue in Oswestry on the Sunday of the Bank

Holiday weekend, partly because it was pouring down with rain and we wanted Belle to enjoy their soft play area but also because it has a car park large enough to comfortably stash the 5.3 metre long vehicle. Inside the play area it quickly became apparent we’ve raised a little daredevil; there was no fear when it came to crossing the cargo net or going down the slides. It was also evident that, despite her tender age, she has far more energy than myself, who she insisted played hide and seek with her for the best part of an hour! The following day Belle decided to wake up at 3am and get my attention by repeating the words ‘daddy ball, daddy ball’ over and over again until I eventually gave in. We think she must have been dreaming about her previous adventures, so with the weather much nicer on the Monday I set about making her a ball pit using the loading bed of the X-Class. We have hundreds of plastic balls that we use to put in the paddling pool or the bath, but wanting to demonstrate how useful the 1.7 metre long loading bed is I emptied them all into the back and let her

Anyone buying the X-Class will equally love the utilitarian aspects of the vehicle as well as its posh perks play for hours. She had great fun, absolutely loved it, and anyone buying the X-Class will equally love the utilitarian aspects of the vehicle as well as its posh perks. The X-Class will carry over a tonne and tow up to 3.5 tonnes – the equivalent of a horse box with three horses inside – although from a family point of view I’d always suggest investing in a locking hardtop cover for the loading bed so you can keep your groceries, push chairs and everything else you’d normally keep in the boot safe and secure. Anyone thinking of investing in a luxury pick-up as their sole family vehicle will also be pleased to know the X-Class did well across the four main categories of the Euro NCAP safety assessment, and achieved the full five stars. Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, trailer stabilisation and traffic-sign recognition.

Last Word Per Lindstrand

Aeronautical engineer, pilot, entrepreneur and adventurer Per Lindstrand takes this month’s Last Word page, talking about his remarkable career, breaking records and the Oswestry Balloon Carnival. Where do you live? I live in Oswestry. Tell us about your career trajectory to date. I started working life as an engineering officer in the Swedish Airforce but was grounded due to a skiing accident and then became a balloon manufacturer. I moved to England in 1978 to start up Colt balloons Ltd., and remained here ever since, becoming firmly rooted in Oswestry where the family home is located. My interest in becoming a balloon manufacturer stemmed from my desire to extend the frontiers of balloon technology, as I observed there was a market opportunity to build and sell a properly engineered product. You’re originally from Sweden, what brought you to Oswestry? In 1978 Sweden had a booming economy, whilst Britain offered a much lower cost structure for manufacturing a product as labour intensive as a balloon. So I decided to set up my business in England rather than my native Sweden. There was also the availability of a brand-new factory ready to move in. 66 | Oswestry life

What do you think are the benefits of running your business from Oswestry? We have a low turnover of staff and there is availability of a trained workforce here. What is Lindstrand’s unique selling point? Innovative engineering. The Lindstrand Technologies factory has produced some of the most advanced lighter-than-air airships and inflatable structures in the world. The design, manufacturing and quality control all take place in house. Our machinery, testing equipment and software programs represent the latest technology and are capable of manufacturing advanced products for use in any climate conditions, as well as in space and at sea. Describe a typical day in your life? The majority of the day is occupied by engineering activity with the remainder on marketing and customer contact. What do you love most about your job? It is forever changing so you never get bored. What’s your greatest achievement? Holding the three absolute hot air balloon records in terms of distance, duration and altitude.

Do you have any ambitions left to fulfil? I’d like to fly around the world in a pure hot air balloon. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given? I’ve never had any. If you weren’t working with hot air balloons, what else do you think you might have done? Design aircraft. Do you have a role model you look up to in business? Ettore Bugatti (the Italian-born French automobile designer). You are supporting this year’s Balloon Carnival in Oswestry. Can you tell us more about this? Following on from last year’s successful event which was held at the British Ironwork Centre, we are supporting the event again in association with Nightingale House Hospice and Oswestry Town Council. This year’s event will be held at Cae Glas Park right in the heart of the town. I am excited to see Oswestry becoming a ballooning associated town again!
