Tourism boost for Oswestry Market

Oswestry Borderland Tourism (OBT), Oswestry’s long standing tourism group has recently relocated their Tourist Information Centre from Castle View, Oswestry to Powis Market Hall.

Lee Lucks, chairman of Oswestry Borderland Tourism, explained that Shropshire Council had given them notice on their previous location in Castle View. “This came as quite a shock”, she said but went on to say, “We were disappointed to have to move again after only four years and had been looking at various new locations.

“We heard about a vacant unit in the indoor market and agreed the tenancy with Oswestry Town Council. This is already proving to be a great location and will encourage even more visitors to the TIC and we hope, boost numbers of people visiting the indoor market. Our numbers have been steadily growing with a 25% increase in 2023 to over 5000 visitors. These numbers really showcase how face to face visitor information is still important to people.”

Karen Pringle, senior tourism officer with OBT, went on to say that the new location was ideal as the TIC is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays which are also market days. “It’s great to be part of Oswestry’s historic market and to add to the retail offer there with exclusive gifts and Oswestry souvenirs. Tourist Information Centres are not just for visitors! We love meeting local people and telling them about all the great events in Oswestry and nearby as well as just how many amazing places there are to visit right on our doorstep.”

The TIC is open at Oswestry Indoor Market: Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am-3pm. It is accessible and has disabled parking spaces in The Horsemarket car park.

Students at Specialist College Vitalise Heritage Railway

Over the course of the last two years, Derwen College Walford student Harry and his friends in the Leaf It to Us crew have been helping to maintain the grounds at Oswestry’s Cambrian Heritage Railway. As a thank you, the volunteer force at the Oswestry Cambrian put on a show that the students will never forget.

The volunteers organised a private train ride from Oswestry station to Weston Wharf, entrusting Harry with the assistant guard’s duties to celebrate the completion of his Supported Internship. For weeks, Harry has been brimming with excitement at his chance to wave the flag and work the intercom from the guard’s compartment. Lying in wait at the destination was a celebratory barbeque for the students, staff and volunteers to enjoy together.

As a part of his studies in horticulture, for two years Harry has been attending a regular work experience placement at Oswestry Cambrian. Initially, Harry, who is autistic, found the transition to a new routine and environment challenging. When Harry started working on the railway, he struggled to traverse the uneven trackside ground without significant physical and emotional support.

Ruth Braddick, who supports Harry on his placement, says, “Harry’s development is nothing short of incredible. When we started at Cambrian, his confidence was so low that he couldn’t walk over any uneven surface without panicking or needing assistance. His fear of danger was so overwhelming that he struggled to move.

“Thanks to two years of hard work by college staff and the volunteers at Cambrian, Harry is almost unrecognisable now. He is so much more confident and outgoing and can walk anywhere confidently.”

Teamwork makes day centre great fun for everyone

“We really enjoy hearing all the interesting stories from the older people,” says Fran Kneale who has been a volunteer at Oswestry Day Centre for seven years now. “And the teamwork here between the volunteers is brilliant and makes it great fun for everyone.”

The day centre – based at Monkmoor Court, a retirement housing complex to the east of the town centre – is one of several run by Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin across the county.

Fran says, as she is busy getting cups and saucers ready in the kitchen, “These sessions are so important for people, people who might otherwise be lonely. You know that older people living alone can almost become invisible so it’s crucial to have something like this. It’s a bit like you or I meeting friends for coffee. It’s that social contact.

“The day centre is great. We often have entertainment like we have today, we have people come along and read stories, or we have exercise classes.”

One of those people that the volunteers have enjoyed getting to know is 77-year-old widow Audrey Lewis, who says, “I’ve been coming here now for a year and it’s lovely. We do all sorts of things: bingo, cards, quizzes, dot-to-dot, wordsearches, we sometimes have entertainment like today, we have a proper lunch – today it’s fish and chips, and we have a pudding.”

You can find out more about the day centre by calling 01743 233 123, emailing enquiries@ ageukstw.org.uk or by visiting the website www.ageuk.org.uk.

Choir vacancies become available

Oswestry Museum project wins special recognition

In July, Mark Hignett who volunteers at Oswestry Town Museum, had to keep a big secret from us all until he’d been to a very special event.

Mark travelled to London after being invited to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Heritage Open Days. Mark is a staunch supporter and advocate for the national HODs (held in early September each year), which has seen Oswestry Museum create some brilliant presentations over the past 10 years.

Mark described what happened. “It was a very proud moment when they declared that our 2017 Gilbert and Gordon ‘ink to ash to diamond’ project, was one of the top 10 HODs events of all time and was being given a place in their 30 for 30 Gallery, celebrating 30 years of fantastic events across the country.”

Gilbert Bradley and Gordon Bowsher had a secret love affair during World War II that they kept alive through more than 300 letters. A poignant story since homosexuality in Britain was illegal during that time.

With existing members moving on to university, St. Oswald’s Choir will have vacancies for new choristers from September.

St. Oswald’s Choir is rare in that it’s a parish church choir where the top line is composed entirely of young voices. Week by week the cathedral church repertoire is sung to a high standard and choristers gain experience of a wide range of music.

Choristers receive free singing lessons using the ‘Voice for Life’ scheme which offers a superb grounding in vocal development and musicianship. The scheme will train the young person’s voice so they have the vocal technique needed for whatever genre of music they may wish to sing.

Director of Music, Mike Donkin, is looking for boys and girls aged 11 - 13. As a guide, he’s not looking for expertise in singing; that will be taught. He’s looking for young people who can sing in tune and have a good reading ability since they will have to cope with singing in Latin on a regular basis as well as other languages.

Once the new term starts there will be a ‘taster’ session at St. Oswald’s Parish Centre (at the back of the church or access from the Broadwalk) on Saturday 7 September at 11.00am. Refreshments will be available.

At that session, prospective choristers and/or their parents can learn what choir membership entails – both the benefits of membership and the type of training on offer. Senior Choristers will be present to talk to attendees about their experience of life in the choir

Anyone interested is welcome to come along and find out about the choir with no commitment.

Butcher’s Arms ladies team win

The Oswestry and District Ladies Darts League presentations took place last month at Whittington Cricket Club.  The season was the most competitive for a very long time, with the Market, Ellesmere, and the Butchers Arms, Oswestry, vying for the top spot.

The winners of the league weren’t decided until the very last match, with the Butcher’s Arms coming out in top spot. The winners of the individual cups and Rose Bowls going to different teams for the first time.

So, ladies would you consider a game of darts? What about joining a ladies league? It sounds fun and it is fun. Oswestry and District ladies’ darts league are calling out for some more players to join them.

Joyce Barrow who plays in the league said, “The new season starts in September, and we would like to encourage public houses, that don’t have a team, to try and establish one.  The ladies darts league would help to establish teams if needed and

could help to coach new players.”

To find out more about the Oswestry and District ladies league, contact Joyce Barrow on 07368 801232.

RJAH London Marathon runners raise £45,000

Twenty-one remarkable runners who took part in the 2024 TCS London Marathon in aid of The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital have been thanked for their efforts.

A special celebration event was held in the Headley Court Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre at the Oswestrybased hospital to honour the fundraisers who took part in the race, which took place back in April.

The runners collectively raised a phenomenal £45,000 for the RJAH Charity.

Victoria Sugden, Charity Director, said, “We are immensely grateful to our team of runners who took part in the London Marathon to raise much needed funds for RJAH Charity.

“The London Marathon is the biggest fundraiser on the calendar and all runners play a huge part in enabling us to provide the best possible support to patients and staff at RJAH.

“The funds raised by the team will go into our wider charitable funds pot, which is used to fund projects across the hospital to support patient care and improve staff services.”

Each runner received a certificate of appreciation which was presented to them by Stacey Keegan, Chief Executive at Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital.

Stacey, who was part of Team RJAH for the 2023 London Marathon, said, “Having taken part in the marathon myself, I know what a huge personal achievement it is.

“My congratulations go to each and every one of them for their outstanding achievement.”

Harry Turner, Trust Chair, said, “A huge thank you must go to every single Team RJAH member – their dedication and commitment to

running the marathon and raising funds for RJAH Charity has been overwhelming and we can’t thank them enough.

“On behalf of the Trust I want to say well done to all. The money raised will benefit our patients and staff and for that, we are grateful.”

The runners who took part in the marathon were; Rachel Overy, Lucy Kirby, Ellie Sykes, Matt Barber, Charlie Sinclair, Jonny Drury, Maria Ellis, Natalie New, Archie Wilkinson, Shaun Harrison, Josh Crane, Katherine Russell, Michael Thomas, Kieran Evans, Michaela Quinton, Jo Lewis, Emma Gittins, Sam Herbert, Liza Francis, Ben Maddox and Yanira Camino.

The 2025 TCS London Marathon is planned to take place on Sunday 27 April and Team RJAH is already at full capacity.

Pickleball has landed in Oswestry

World’s Fastest Growing Sport

In February 2024, a life-changing event unfolded for Julia and Mark Jones from West Felton. During a visit to their daughter in the Cayman Islands, they discovered the exciting game of Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the world. This sport, akin to tennis, table tennis, and badminton, captivated them. In the UK, Pickleball is primarily played indoors on badminton courts, which are similar in size to Pickleball courts. The game uses a lower net than tennis and involves paddles and a plastic wiffle ball. While it can be played in singles, doubles are more common. Known for being inclusive, Pickleball is enjoyed by people of all ages and physical abilities. It’s fun, competitive, addictive, and promotes both mental and physical health.

Founding Oswestry Pickleball

Upon returning to the UK, Julia and Mark were disheartened to find no local venues for Pickleball. Determined to share their newfound passion, they founded “Oswestry Pickleball” on 24 April 2024. In just seven weeks, the group has flourished, offering three sessions per week at Oswestry Leisure Centre and two sessions at St Martins School Sports Centre. The demand continues to grow, and Julia and Mark have invested in the necessary equipment, driven solely by their desire to promote the game and foster community relations. They have also funded and obtained relevant training through Pickleball England, enabling them to introduce the sport to beginners and provide coaching training.

A New Chapter in Life

Having both given up their professional careers last year—Julia as a community mental health nurse and Mark as a business manager—both faced concerns

about their identities post-retirement. However, they have embraced a new identity centred around giving rather than receiving. Their efforts with Oswestry Pickleball reflect this shift, highlighting their commitment to community and well-being.

Tournival Fundraising Event

To celebrate the success of Oswestry Pickleball and to further unite the community, Julia and Mark organised a “Tournival” in July. The event not only brought local players together, but also participants from Wrexham and Ellesmere Pickleball clubs. Dedicated to promoting community spirit, all proceeds from the Tournival were donated to Hope House Children’s Hospice. Julia and Mark aspire to hold more charity events in the future.

Community and Future Plans

The Oswestry Pickleball group maintains an active Facebook page,

“Oswestry Pickleball,” where they share session information and updates. Sessions are kept affordable at £5, ensuring accessibility for all. Looking ahead, Julia and Mark are in discussions with local schools about introducing Pickleball to children, aiming to expand the sport’s reach and benefits.

Julia and Mark’s initiative is not just about a game; it’s about building community, fostering relationships, and enhancing well-being. The future looks promising for Oswestry Pickleball, with growing participation and a strong commitment to community engagement and charitable causes.

To find out more, join the Facebook group @Oswestry Pickleball and contact Julia and Mark.

A GOOD GRIEF

Pet loss, whether through death, parting, theft or enforced separation, can be devastating. Remember, not only the human members of the family are affected, but surviving pets may also grieve. Grief can be difficult, and healing takes time. Some people may not understand your intense feelings, but there are people out there who do, such as A GOOD GRIEF, in Oswestry. They offer listening support, and also offer natural plant support for you and/or your pets before, during and after transition. Tips to help you and your remaining pet cope with loss:

• Ignore unwanted pet behaviour - Reinforce positive behaviour. E.g. unusual whimpering, pawing. Comforting a pet when they are expressing unwanted behaviours may reinforce that behaviour. Instead, comfort at other times, like when they are quiet and lying down.

• Keep routines as similar as possible - The loss is enough change as it is!

• Pets’ grief reaction can be very different to that of their peers/ family members - Your pet may experience delayed grief or no grief reaction. Your pet may grieve more than his/her family members. Beware of putting your own feelings onto your pet. E.g. looking sad may be their natural expression!

• Changes in social order - If you have more than one surviving pet, it is common for them to vie for alpha status. You may see more “challenges” between pets.

• Keep your pet busy - If your dog is home alone for the first time, get them a toy that stimulates their mind e.g. a treat-hiding toy or a new squeaky toy.

• Keep an eye on your pets’ health - Pets can react with physical symptoms to grief. E.g. be more tired, eat less, or not be as playful as usual. If worried, consult your vet.

• Be careful about being overprotective of your surviving pets.

• Be careful of not bonding to your surviving pets. If you are struggling to fulfil your surviving pet’s needs, reach out for help. SLOWLY, THINGS WILL GET EASIER!

FILM OF THE MONTH

I’ll See You in My Dreams (12)

AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX AND RENT OR BUY ELSEWHERE.

Released in the US in 2015 to quiet acclaim, ‘I’ll See You in My Dreams’ follows Carol, an introspective widowed songwriter in her 60s. After the death of her beloved dog, she decides to widen her social circle and finds herself with new friends and a new zest for life.

Carol develops an unexpected platonic relationship with her pool cleaner, a potential romance doesn’t quite pan out the way it usually would, and her friendship circle’s new experiences include pot, run-ins with the local cops, and stealing a shopping trolley while high. It’s a film about second chances and being brave enough to take them, the importance of friendships, and how older women can lead lives just as colourful and eventful as anyone else’s. Carol’s life hasn’t turned out the way she thought it would, and it’s all the better for it. Blythe Danner is simply brilliant as Carol and the supporting cast includes familiar faces like Rhea Perlmann and Sam Elliott. You may not have heard of this one and it won’t change your world, but it will change your evening, and sometimes that’s more than enough.

A Riddle For A King is like nothing I’ve ever read before. It’s so different. Philo, the main character, is really bored of his home life and wants an adventure.

He discovers that there’s a strange world through a grandfather clock. When he arrives in this new place, nothing is what it seems, everything is backwards. It’s good to drop litter on the floor and yes means no. I don’t want to give anything away, but you should read this book because it’s fun, quirky and creative. If you like solving riddles, you will really enjoy A Riddle For A King.

To get involved in selecting the Children’s Choice, sign up for one of Booka Bookshop’s Junior Book Clubs. Book Mice is for 7+ and meets on the third Monday of every month. Books Worms is for 9+ and meets on the third Tuesday of every month. Book Dragons is for 12+ and meets on the third Wednesday of every month. Book Clubs run only during term time from 4:15 to 5pm. Full schedule of social events await you when you join Oswestry Oddfellows

Oswestry Oddfellows is inviting people who are looking for new things to do...or ways to broaden their circle of friends, to give them a go.

The local friendly society’s members regularly get together to enjoy a mix of affordable events, some of which are free. Events include coffee mornings, dining out, games evenings or exercise classes, and though the type of events vary they all have these in common – friendship and a warm welcome!

Branch Secretary Vivienne Osborne believes that trying new things is better in good company. She says their local group is a ready-made set of friends to enjoy spending time with, and they are always looking for newcomers to join them.

Vivienne says, “September is Friendship Month, and we have a selection of great events coming up. Coffee and Cake on the 11th, Lunch at the Orangery on the 12th. Exercise Classes on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th and a Coffee Morning on the 24th.

“Nobody should be without company if they want it. These events are specifically designed to make people feel at ease and give them the chance to build or extend their friendship circle. We’d love to see you, so get in touch to find out further information – what have you got to lose by giving us a go?”

The Oddfellows has a history of providing support and helping people. As well as a full schedule of social events, there are a host of other benefits* available to members including group holidays, money saving offers, and care and welfare support.

EAT IN FOR ONE

Gnocchi con tomate

The crisp bounce of the gnocchi replaces the bread traditionally used in Spanish ‘pan con tomate’ and takes it from a light lunch to a more substantial meal for one!

Ingred I ents

• 2 good-quality large vine tomatoes

• 1 clove garlic, peeled and grated

• Flaky sea salt

• Extra virgin olive oil

• 150g gnocchi

• 5g fresh basil leaves, torn if large

More than eight million Brits live alone. This recipe is extracted from One Pot, One Portion recipes for people who eat, cook or live alone, but are tiread of washing up, by Eleanor Wilkinson, out now, published Ebury Press, priced at £22, with photography by Dan Jones.

method

1. Start by grating your tomatoes onto your serving bowl or plate. Use the large hole of the grater and grate until you are left with the skin of the tomato, which you can discard. Add the garlic to the tomato and mix together. Season well with salt and a good drizzle of olive oil.

2. Heat a frying pan over a medium-high heat and add another good drizzle of olive oil to the pan. Add the gnocchi and fry for 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Season with salt then spoon over the tomato mixture.

3. Scatter the basil over the top before serving.

Serves 4 | Preparation time 15 minutes | Cooking time 30 minutes

Apple tarte tatin

Tarte tatin has an air of sophistication that brings with it a reputation for being difficult or time-consuming to make. In reality, it’s uncomplicated and undemanding, especially if you use ready-rolled pastry.

Ingred I ents

• 75g ready-rolled puff pastry

• 35g caster sugar

• 30g butter

• ¼ tsp vanilla extract

• A small pinch of salt

• 140g baking apples (around 1 small apple), peeled, cored and cut into 1cm slices to serve

• Whipped cream, ice cream or creme fraiche

method

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, 160°C fan, gas mark 4.

2. Unroll your pastry sheet and cut it into a circle the size of a castiron frying pan.

3. Add the sugar to your pan and heat over a medium heat. Don’t stir it but let it melt, then gently swill it around the pan as it turns to liquid. It will start to caramelise and turn a golden colour, this will take 4-5 minutes.

4. Once the sugar is golden, turn off the heat and add in the butter. Add in the vanilla and a small pinch of salt, and stir again to combine everything.

5. Once combined, place the apples on top of the caramel, arranging them in any way you like but trying to keep them in a single layer as much as possible. Lay the circle of pastry on top of the apples and tuck it around the edges of the pan slightly. Place in the oven and bake for 25 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden.

6. Once baked, take your serving plate and place it face down on top of the skillet. Carefully but confidently flip the plate and skillet over, turning out the tarte so the apples face upwards. Serve with whipped cream, ice cream or creme fraiche

Recipe is extracted from One Pot, One Portion recipes for people who eat, cook or live alone, but are tired of washing up, by Eleanor Wilkinson, out now, published Ebury Press, priced at £22, with photography by Dan Jones.

We want to help you create the most memorable event, from the tiny details to the extravagant gestures. Oswestry Cricket Club can help you with your layout, decorations, music choices all the way up to your food options - be that a delicious menu or making way for your favourite caterer. Whatever your budget, we can help.

A husband and wife team based just outside of Shrewsbury have been shaking up the way we host at home. If you love cooking, using top ingredients, and mastering new dishes, you will love what they have to offer.

The Host’s Pantry is run by Jess and Scott Woodland. A few years back, Scott was managing restaurants in London, where his obsession with recipes, good food and fine wine began. He came up with the idea of a luxury recipe box business that would make hosting at home simple. The ingredients would be carefully sourced from trusted suppliers, the recipes would be presented in a detailed guide geared to hosting at home, and everything would arrive in one neat package.

The Host’s Pantry was born. They curate seasonal menu choices, which can be explored on their website. You can order your box and later schedule the delivery when it suits you.

On the website, you can choose one of the two or three course curated recipe boxes or build your own box to choose each course, and select how many people you are feeding.

You will learn new techniques, get to cook with quality ingredients and enjoy having all the hassle of sourcing recipes and ingredients taken away.

New Online Food Hall

The Host’s Pantry has always offered the option of buying produce from the website when a recipe isn’t required. This summer they are expanding their offering with the launch of an online food hall. You will be able to order locally and internationally sourced ingredients, deli items, fresh meat and produce, hampers, and drinks to be delivered to your door, with more on offer than you would find at a local farm shop.

Think of them as an extension of your pantry. As long as you order by 12pm on Wednesday, you can receive the delivery as early as the following day ready for your weekend plans.

Much of the produce is suitable for freezing, meaning you can stock up for the month ahead.

Produce on offer includes their Galician prime rib, which is counted as one of the four best beef cuts in the world. It is sourced from Northern Spain where the cows are free to roam for longer, which develops a higher fat content providing exceptional flavour and beautiful marbling. Nicknamed ‘Spanish Wagyu’ it is used in top restaurants across Europe, and you can have it delivered to your door!

Gifting

The Host’s Pantry can also be used for gifts. You gift their curated recipe boxes or choose one of their hampers or gift vouchers. For example, you could gift a luxury steak and chips box, a Shropshire cheese board, or a steak and wine hamper.

Order now

Head to hostspantry.com to select a recipe box, explore the produce on offer and the gift options. Look out for their newly launched BBQ boxes which bring together premium meats, perfect for enjoying a summer’s day with loved ones.

Help at HomeA job that rewards

The coffee is still too hot to drink, so Marguerite puts her mug down for a moment, looks up and smiles, and says, “It’s a really, really lovely job, this. It’s important and worthwhile but it’s also lovely. The people I visit are delightful. Honestly, it’s such good fun.”

Marguerite has been a Home Support Worker for local charity Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin for almost 10 years now, and today she’s visiting Iain who lives in a quiet cul-de-sac untroubled by traffic, and where the neighbourhood cat roams undisturbed.

“We have a really good laugh, don’t we, Iain? Basically, I sit here and he entertains me with all his stories. If he has any ironing to do, he orders me about with the ironing board and tells me I’m not doing it right!”

“Ha!” says Iain. “Know your place, woman!” he jokes, referencing a TV comedy show from years ago. “The truth is,” says Iain, “She comes here and moves everything about and when she leaves after two hours, I go round to put everything back where it should be.”

They both laugh.

“When I first started coming here, Iain had had a nasty fall and had spent time in hospital,” says Marguerite.

Iain, 81, soft-spoken and thoughtful, sits in his favourite armchair, telephone and notebook at his side. In his light grey pullover, burgundy trousers and brown slippers, he is relaxed and happy, trading jokes with Marguerite.

Iain’s wife Joan died “a few years ago”. She was a schoolteacher and, later in life, a Help at Home worker just like Marguerite.

So, what’s Iain’s take on the service provided by Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin?

“Wonderful,” he says. “Yes, we enjoy a joke. But in all seriousness, Marguerite does a great job, and I

always look forward to her visits.”

Iain lists his hobbies as reading spy and war novels (especially those of Len Deighton and John le Carre) and listening to jazz recordings (including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk). He says, “As much as anything else, I enjoy chatting with Marguerite. It’s good to have the company.

“Loneliness can be a terrible thing, and I’ve come to appreciate that a lot more since I’ve been confined to the house.”

Having said that, Iain says he is blessed to have good neighbours, and his son who lives nearby and who he sees regularly.

Marguerite, married with four children, and a former mental health nurse and later registered childminder, says, “I think originally this role of Home Support Worker was more about helping with housework, and yes of course it is still about that, but it has morphed into something wider than that, something much more holistic, where the social side of it is as important as any jobs that need doing.”

The Help at Home scheme supports older people to maintain their independence by providing practical assistance, and right now the charity is encouraging more people to apply for the service in a number of Shropshire locations including Oswestry, Whitchurch, Wem, Ellesmere and Market Drayton. Anyone interested in applying for Help at Home should email enquiries@ ageukstw.org.uk or telephone 01743 233 788 for further details.

The scheme employs a team of caring, well-trained Home Support Workers. All come with good references, and all are checked with the Disclosure & Barring Service. They carry out everyday tasks that an older person may find difficult to manage. These might include: Vacuuming, dusting, bathroom and kitchen cleaning, shopping, collecting prescriptions, laundry, ironing, cleaning inside windows and gardening.

Wherever possible the same support worker will visit each time to provide continuity and visits are usually undertaken in two-hour blocks.

Common things occur commonly… but rare things do occur, rarely

What is a diagnosis? Most patients expect their GP to try and diagnose symptoms and give them a name. This makes it easier to plan any treatment and predict what may happen next. But making a specific diagnosis is more difficult than it seems. About 40% of us have symptoms each day – these do not represent an illness but are the “feelings of life”. Giving these “symptoms” a diagnostic label would be unhelpful at least and, by offering a potential lifetime-lasting identity, potentially very harmful. Then, patients describe their complaints in their own language and not that of the medical textbook.

When I first qualified, I was amazed by this difference - patients just didn’t fit the boxes I had been taught about! Diagnoses reflect current medical understanding and current misunderstanding too! Medical research refines our definition of diseases year by year. Some patterns of symptoms are often recognised as a group but we have little understanding of the pathology. These are

often labelled as “syndromes” and can be quite controversial in their naming.

Medicine has always had a tendency to blame patients for not fitting the boxes and attribute symptoms to a psychological cause when nothing else fits. That might be true but sometimes doctors are forgetting the limits of their own knowledge. Patients often see their GP in the early stages of an illness. The textbooks of the past were almost entirely written by consultants seeing well established disease and these books informed medical school teaching.

Finally, there are many conditions, particularly in the psychiatric field, which are pathological varieties of common human experience. The current controversy about the spike in mental heath illness with anxiety and depressive disorders illustrates how difficult it is to draw the line between illness and extremes of normal human distress. As a GP sometimes reacting positively to the distress and not rushing to make a diagnosis is a kindness itself.

If you need a new challenge- we need your passion, patience and ability to care. A career in care is so rewarding, because you can make a real difference by giving your time to someone who needs company and support.

When Your Lifelong Vehicle Breaks Down

In my last article, we compared your body to a lifelong vehicle—a car you must keep for life. Now, consider what happens when this car is neglected. Failing to service it, ignoring strange noises, or skipping regular checks would inevitably lead to breakdowns. The once smooth and trouble-free ride becomes unreliable and stressful.

Now, think of your body as this car. Many of us lead busy lives, often sitting for prolonged periods, which can lead to joint pain, particularly in the back, hips, and knees. Ignoring these warning signs and continuing without proper maintenance can result in severe breakdowns in your health.

As a Movement Coach, I specialise in addressing the root causes of such pain, not just the symptoms. By mobilising and strengthening the sources of injury and chronic pain, we can restore your body’s functionality and prevent further issues. This isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about creating sustainable, long-term health improvements.

Consider the experience of one of my clients, “I started seeing Andrew due to experiencing lower back pain. After just a handful of sessions, I am already feeling the benefit of his experience. He has been most informative and has a wealth of knowledge. I feel both my fitness levels and mobility have improved.”

It’s crucial to understand that jumping straight into exercise after a long period of inactivity without a considered, methodical approach is a common mistake. Many people believe they will get fit instantly, but this can lead to further injuries and setbacks. True fitness and health require patience, consistency, and the right guidance.

Don’t wait for a major breakdown to take action. Investing in your health now will keep your lifelong vehicle running smoothly and efficiently. Let’s work together to create a personalised plan that fits your life and helps you achieve your goals.

Book a consultation today and start your journey towards a healthier, freer, and more youthful you. Remember, your body is your lifelong vehicle. Let’s keep it roadworthy for years to come.

Your body is your lifelong vehicle. Let’s keep it roadworthy, fuel it well, and ensure it takes you wherever you want to go. Invest in yourself today for a healthier, freer tomorrow.

Ear wax build-up can cause hearing loss

Wax build-up can also cause earache, tinnitus and infection. According to the British Journal of General Practice, an estimated 2.3 million people per year require wax removal services.

Ear wax build-up can affect any age, but it’s more prevalent in the elderly and hearing aid users.

But now the NHS no longer offers ear wax removal services for everyone, where do you go for help?

Microsuction is the latest in earwax removal technology that’s safe and hygienic. Having a regular examination of your ears, will find the cause of any blockages or issues in the canal.

Imagine having access locally to a wax removal expert with 25 years’ experience in the NHS, who’s also a registered nurse.

Sister Kate is the only CQC regulated (legal

requirement) ear wax removal service, in Shropshire. This means, the quality and safety of care given is under strict guidance and regularly monitored, putting you, the patient, at the heart of the treatment.

Kate was also an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist within the NHS so holds a unique understanding of how symptoms of one problem, may also affect other areas around the ears.

Did you know, NHS hearing aid users are entitled to free wax removal? Sister Kate is now working with the Cambrian Surgery in Oswestry, to offer this service.

To get the best out of your hearing aids, make sure you regularly check for wax build-up.

Clinic appointments are available all over Shropshire and Mid-Wales. If you can’t get to clinic, get in touch for a home visit.

For bookings call 01691 888192 or email kate@sister-kate.co.uk.

The 1st Ear Wax Removal Clinic in Shropshire to become regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)

Sister Kate specialises in micro suction treatments to help patients remove excessive ear wax that is causing a blockage that has resulted in hearing loss or is causing unpleasant feelings in the ear.

This year, the NHS Organ Donor Register is celebrating its 30th birthday. So, for Organ Donation Week (23-29 September 2024), the NHS is encouraging as many local landmarks and buildings across the UK to turn pink, to help encourage people to confirm their decision on the register.

By donating, you have the chance to give someone their confidence and independence back, and even save a life. It’s said that every donation could save up to nine lives, so every donation really is precious!

The ‘opt-out’ system

In 2020, the law around organ donation in England changed. All adults in England are now considered to have agreed to be organ donors when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate on the NHS Organ Donor Register or are in one of the

excluded groups. This is commonly referred to as an ‘opt-out’ system.

However, your family will always be involved before a donation takes place. Therefore, you must discuss the topic with them or a nominated friend, as they can overturn your decision.

So, what can you do now to make a difference?

Register your decision at www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ register-your-decision. There’s no deadline and you can change your decision at any time.

Clinicians won’t proceed with a donation if your family objects, so it’s important to make your family aware of your decision.

Register your decision today on the Organ Donation Register at www.organdonation.nhs.uk/register-your-decision.

Moreton Hall Students Celebrate Another Year of Outstanding A Level Results

Students at Moreton Hall are celebrating with a fantastic year of A Level results. The results have again confounded press headlines and the 45% A* to A grades awarded show Moreton Hall students continuing to perform at the levels achieved last year and again outperforming the 2019 pre-covid results. 91% of students will now be packing their bags for their first choice of university, many of them to the most competitive Russell Group institutions.

Amongst the many success stories, Arabella Fellows and Ukrainian student Mariia Dmytryk who joined Moreton Sixth for their A Level studies are off to the University of Oxford to read English and the University of Leeds to study Economics, whilst Emma Barnes who joined Moreton Hall in Reception heads to Cardiff to study Law and Criminology with a full house of As and A*s grades. Flying in the face of reports that students now study a narrower selection of subjects, Holly Longfellow, who joined Moreton Hall in Year 1 and was the recipient of this year’s Karefa-Smart Trophy, the school’s highest award, achieved an impressive array of 4 A* and A grades across both STEM and Art subjects. After a year of Foundation Art studies at UAL, Holly hopes to move onto Medical school.

International student success stories include Ephelia Ziyue Hu and Helen Bohan Yang who both achieved a full house of A* grades: Ephelia will head to Edinburgh to read Computer Science and Helen to University College London to study Biochemistry.

Outcomes like these are possible when independence of mind and spirit is nurtured, and complemented by hard work, talent, and determination.

With Moreton Hall’s Next Steps Careers team supporting each student in finding the right course for their individual interests and strengths, the diverse range of courses chosen this year include Psychology, Economics, Linguistics,

Marine and Natural History Photography, Primary Education, Geophysics, Classics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and a range of Medical and Health Sciences.

Commenting on today’s success, Moreton Hall Principal Michael Brewer said: “These results are remarkable, as are the individual stories of success behind every grade. Outcomes like these are possible when independence of mind and spirit is nurtured, and complemented by hard work, talent, and determination. Moreton girls, their families, and all supporting staff, are rightly proud of what has been achieved here.”

The IT outage only affected businesses with an antivirus program called CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike did an update to their program – and didn’t test it properly - which caused all computers still on Windows 10 to crash. It didn’t affect computers on Windows 11 because there is more built-in protection. Do you need to update to Windows 11?

In October 2025 - yes - because Windows 10 will not be supported by security updates which means your computer will be more vulnerable to attack. Some of the hot keys have changed - and some icons are in a slightly different place but, generally, updating to windows 11 shouldn’t cause you any problems. If there’s something you can’t solve – just give us a call.

Celebrating the past

An array of incredible Bronze Age items found in the county have been the catalyst for a new partnership between Shropshire Museums and the British Museum in London.

The project is discussed in a new podcast by Lanyon Bowdler, which is a sponsor of Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, holding various events at the museum and supporting the facility in a number of ways.

Neil Davies, head of the Court of Protection team at Lanyon Bowdler, actually worked in a museum after graduating from university so has a keen personal interest in history.

He has also done a bit of metal detecting in his spare time, so was the perfect choice to meet with EmmaKate Lanyon, of Shropshire Museums, to discuss the exhibition.

Emma-Kate said, “Back in 2018, a metal detectorist, Bob, was out in the field and found something which he immediately knew was spectacular and really important.

“When the Finds Liaison Officer at the time showed me, neither of us could actually believe what we were seeing. It went to the British Museum for their expert opinion, and they confirmed that it was an incredible

gold sun pendant dating from the middle Bronze Age.

“After finding this wonderful object, Bob then scours those fields and produces this incredible collection of metalworkaxes, spears… all sorts of different tools in bronze.

“For the exhibition, we decided we would concentrate on a particular theme of how sun and fire had such an important role in Bronze Age life.

“Alongside this exhibition we are now developing a new prehistoric gallery in conjunction with the British Museum, who are allowing us to borrow back some other finds from Shropshire which have been deposited with them over the years.

“It will bring some really exciting archaeology back into the county.”

The exhibition “Sun and Fire: Life and Death at the Dawn of History” is scheduled to open on 18 October 2024.

Printing services done for you

After Lawrences closed the business in Church Street in August 2021, Sally and Clare wanted to see if they could carry on in the printing and copying business. So, that same month they opened, calling themselves LawreCeS.

Create furniture you really want

Fed up with being greeted by your worn-out sideboard every time you walk through the door? It’s tempting to reach for the Ikea catalogue or start googling ‘new furniture’ isn’t it. But there’s nothing actually wrong with the sideboard is there? It’s solid, it wasn’t cheap by any means, and it’s done well to last this long. But how can you get it back to its original condition – better still, how about a change of appearance to match a new colour scheme in the living room!

It’s a dilemma faced by plenty of home makers and especially since upcycling isn’t just a cost saving exercise, but also extremely satisfying. But we don’t all have the time to start sanding, filing, and painting just one piece of furniture. Evenings are precious time for all families.

What if there was someone you could drop off the old furniture with, who will restore it with the finish you want, and hand it back to you? Leaving you with your favourite piece for another 10 years or until you change your décor again. Reinvesting your money in the furniture you once bought, giving you the bespoke results you want – instead of having to choose from a catalogue of the “same old stuff, with the same old look”.

Old To New does exactly that. Having recently moved his shop to 10 Leg Street in Oswestry, William is a trained carpenter and joiner who loves nothing more than breathing

life back into tired furniture.

Every customer has their own vision of what their furniture should look like once restored, and William enjoys working this out with them.

“I spend a lot of time updating kitchens and household furniture such as chest of drawers and bedside tables. Customers understand there’s still time left in the pieces and there are so many ways to fix them up.

“Revealing their ‘old/new’ furniture when they come to collect, is so satisfying. Some customers decide to completely change the

interior of rooms like the kitchen so, we go all in with a new colour, new handles and even worktops.”

There’s a world of options when reinventing your home, which may even work if you’re in the market to sell – starting your project early by making your existing home look smart and giving you ‘new’ furniture for your new home.

Old To New are available for:

• Kitchen spraying

• Furniture restoration

• Furniture repairs

• Commissions

• Home decor

So, next time you think of replacing your furniture with new, consider a cost-effective alternative that will give you truly bespoke pieces that compliment you and your home for years to come.

A touch of red

The ‘Unexpected Red’ theory of interior design went viral earlier this year. So how can we use this bold colour in our homes?

Vibrant and dynamic, red is effortlessly eye-catching and can be a good interior choice. On TikTok, American interior designer Taylor Simon suggested that adding anything red, big or small, will make the space look better. “I’m petitioning for red to be a neutral colour, because it just looks good with everything,” she said.

Fashions have moved away from all-over neutrals, and we’re more willing to experiment with daring hues. Colour-drenching with warm, deep shades of red adds warmth and cosiness. A red-themed bedroom can give a romantic, passionate vibe. However, your all-over-red room may feel overly stimulating or uncomfortable in a shade that’s too sharp and acidic.

The ‘Unexpected Red’ theory makes using this strong colour easier, by using a ‘pop’ of red to elevate your interior. Simon’s examples included larger, permanent items, such as red basins, a red-painted free-standing bath and a red-and-white tiled wall, as well as small things, such as cabinet door handles, lampshades and picture frames. Anyone can add tiny jolts of red and enjoy the effects, such as a bunch of red flowers, a vase or a cushion. Consider also an accent chair, a free-standing cupboard or a rug. You could transform picture frames,

small furniture items or woodwork with some paint.

A key part of Simon’s argument is that the dash of red is not part of a coordinated scheme in which red is planned. The key is surprise, combined with colour theory and which colours complement each other. Colours adjacent to each other on the colour wheel (in this case, red and pink/purple or red and orange) work together, especially in the same tone or brightness. Colours opposite each other, such as red and green (or teal) can balance well and add energy. Most of Simon’s examples used reds against neutrals, teal or purple, where they’ll generally fit without jarring.

Many interior designers use the 60:30:10 rule of proportion, aiming for 60% of one colour on the largest features, 30% of a second colour, and 10% as an accent for smaller details. Add up to 10% red to a mostly neutral scheme with some darker colours, for example, or to a scheme with complementary warm and cool colours.

Get it right by experimenting, using colours you love and want around you. Consider using digital resources or a homemade mood board to get a feel for the scheme. Reduce the intensity of the red, or opt for softer, deeper shades such as plum, claret and burgundy if desired. Try different combinations or, if red isn’t working, use another strong colour, such as lemon yellow or cobalt blue. Adding a splash of confident colour can create incredible impact.

Business hots up for new fire centre owner

Business is hotting up at a Shropshire fireplace centre after an employee acquired the business to allow the founder to enjoy his retirement.

Martin Musker had worked at Admaston Firecraft Centre in Telford for two years before the owner, Peter Brocklesbury, decided he wanted to sell the business and retire 30 years after he first founded his business.

Martin has since rebranded the Shrewsbury based business to The Firecraft Centre. The new name will also allow him to easily open showrooms in other areas.

The specialist firecraft centre provides a range of wood and multi-fuel burners, gas, electric and bioethanol fires, along with a range of wood and non-combustible beams and surrounds and bespoke designed media walls including a “full service from start to finish.”

Martin said he had been overwhelmed with the support and the boom in business from customers across Shropshire and surrounding areas, including Mid Wales and the West Midlands, since he took over.

“We have exciting plans for the premises which will see a mezzanine floor installed in the showroom to allow us to expand our range of woodburners on display.

“We have seen people have media walls created and then plastered and painted but the trend is now taking the next step with our range of bespoke wood veneer which looks exceptional.

“We are proud of the fantastic customer service we offer - from the minute someone walks in through the door to the moment they go away feeling more knowledgeable and with a clearer picture of what they want to the point our fitters are saying goodbye after completing the install in one day.

“The vast majority of the fireplace brands we stock are only available in a showroom and that is important to us. People need to be able to see the product, feel the quality and ensure they like the look of it and the functionality of it for their specific needs.

“Every customer is very different so seeing such a range of varying styles all under one roof is an important part of the purchase.”

Kaz Peate, office and showroom manager, with an extensive retail background at large high street stores, said, “Customer service is vital in all industries but more so in retail and we ensure this is our number one priority.

“The customer deserves regular communication and it should always be on us to ensure the process is smooth. The majority of our installations are done in one day - that’s after I’ve arranged the electrician, the fitters and skips, chimney sweep if needed and any other trades needed for the install to take place all on the same day. Everything happens seamlessly here!

“I am very excited about the future as Martin has ambitious plans and I am pleased to be able to support him and our customers too.”

The duo are already looking to build the team further with more fitters and showroom staff and apprentices, and partnering with housing developers too after successfully securing similar contracts to provide and install fires in new build properties and developments. They hope to open more branches in the future too.

Visit the showroom at Unit 49 Atcham Business Park, Shrewsbury or call 01743 761161, WhatsApp 07533 853933 or visit thefirecraftcentre.co.uk.

Ke-design celebrates 13 years of business

June saw Shropshire’s awardwinning architectural firm Ke-design celebrating 13 years of business. Part of the celebrations includes the launch of their revamped website.

Oswestry’s Craig Marston, founder of Ke-design, shares his insights into the update,

“With a large number of our projects coming from word of mouth, keeping the website updated has been less pressing. It’s incredible how many projects we’ve completed in the last 13 years, updating the website made me realise just how many lives we’ve impacted.”

Visitors to Ke-design’s new website are greeted with their ethos, “Designing for You,” which is reinforced with glowing testimonials. Craig explains, “We always deliver what the client asks for, but we also propose additional options that clients may not have considered, which often exceeds their expectations.”

Recent photoshoots have

highlighted client satisfaction. Craig continues “Good design adds value and enhances wellbeing, so it was wonderful to hear clients express how much our designs have improved their lives.”

After one project, the client praised Ke-design’s suggestion of removing a box bedroom above the stairs to create a double-height space with a gallery landing, offering an impressive ‘first impression’ for everyone who enters.”

Ke-design regularly exhibits at the National Homebuilding and Renovating Show, with their projects frequently featured in the event’s monthly magazine. A recent highlight includes an eight-page feature of a local project in the September issue. Having their work showcased in the media assists with attracting aspirational inquiries.

The website revamp now includes commercial projects, demonstrating Ke-design’s expertise and experience beyond domestic and residential work.

Craig concludes, “We’re excited to continue creating designs that enhance lives and the built environment.”

September in the garden

September is a bitter-sweet month for us gardeners. Much of the garden is still in bloom and vegetables are plenty, but we realise that it is all about to change. Hopefully we will have an Indian Summer this year, we do deserve it, but I won’t hold my breath. The days are shortening and the nights getting chillier.

By continually tidying and dead heading we aim to extend the blooming season as much as we can. We don’t want the flowering plants to think their job is done and enough seeds have been produced. However, if you wish to save seeds for next year you need to leave a few. Also, you can’t give up on the watering and feeding just yet. September can be dry and the nutrients, especially in pots and baskets, will be exhausted.

So, what were your successes and failures this year? It is always good to think back whilst fresh in mind before placing orders for next year’s seeds. Despite the weather the garden finally came together, and my experiments seem to have paid off. I promised to post a picture of the Ipomoea Lobato “Spanish Flag”. A member of the Morning Glory family. Great flowers, but I was expecting them to be a little larger and please note that some members of this family are poisonous to us and our pets. The giant sunflowers have been impressive at around 10’, and I’ll be leaving the seedheads for the birds. The other big success has been an American Pole Bean “Kentucky Gold”. It was slow to start but has produced an amazing crop of tender

green beans, an even better crop than the stalwart runners.

A general clear around the garden now will help next spring and remove hiding places for pests. Depending on the variety, apples and pears will need harvesting. A gentle twist on an apple will tell you it is ready; pears are a little trickier. You don’t want them to ripen on the tree as they won’t keep and be rather fibrous. You need to pick them as they just begin to ripen, then store in a cool dry place.

RETIREMENT PLANNING

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR RETIREMENT SAVING

It’s never too early or too late to start planning for your retirement, but if you’re in your 40s, 50s or 60s, it’s especially important to have a solid strategy.

These years can be pivotal for shaping your financial future and are a great time to establish a clear path to a comfortable retirement.

Here, Craig Roberts from Belgrave Wincham, shares a simple checklist to get started.

Company pension schemes

If you’re employed and haven’t done so already, it could be worth joining your company’s pension scheme. Not only will your employer contribute to your pension and increase the amount saved, but you could also get an immediate boost in the form of tax relief.

Optimise savings

Look at what you’re currently saving towards retirement and see if there are ways you can improve this. If pensions aren’t the best option for you, Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) can be an excellent alternative. There are a whole range of these to suit different needs, including cash ISAs, innovative finance ISAs, stocks and shares ISAs and Lifetime ISAs (LISAs).

Company contributions

Pension contributions are one of the few ways that directors of limited companies can extract profits tax efficiently. This means that it’s possible to make contributions directly from your limited company, which can be more tax-efficient than making a personal pension contribution.

Check self-assessment tax returns

E

S e c u r e D a t a E r a s u

If you’re paying into a pension and earn over £50,000 a year, it may be possible to claim back higher-rate tax relief via self-assessment. It’s one of the biggest benefits of paying into a pension, but many higher-taxpayers don’t realise that sometimes this doesn’t happen automatically.

Remember, help is at hand if you need it. Retirement planning can be complex and an independent financial planner can help simplify the process to make the journey as smooth and stressfree as possible.

Buying or renting business premises – who can advise me?

Q: I run a small manufacturing business that started in my garden workshop with one 3D printer. Now there are four of us in two garden workshops. My dilemma is that I don’t know whether to buy or rent some commercial premises, or whether I should speak to an accountant or a solicitor to help me decide. From a legal perspective, what are the pros and cons?

A: You should speak to both an accountant and a solicitor….. Whilst budget will be the predominant factor, the type and size of your business and where you want it to go is also a consideration. Having a long-term business plan in place will enable you to carefully evaluate your business needs, market conditions, financial stability and any potential risks.

Owning a freehold commercial property will allow you the freedom to do what you want without seeking permission from a landlord. And if you secure the right mortgage, your repayments could be cheaper than rent, plus commercial property does not attract higher stamp duty on the purchase of an additional property.

However, renting premises may also suit your needs in terms of flexibility, and if your business expands it would be easier to move to larger premises relatively quickly should you need to. By negotiating a break clause in the lease, if things are not going to plan you can also exit the lease relatively quickly.

There are many considerations, but getting legal and financial advice is crucial. A commercial property solicitor can advise you on environmental, planning and some finance issues. They are also very used to problem solving, thinking outside of the box, and have a wide range of expertise they can call on in associated fields. An accountant will be able to assist you with any tax or inheritance tax issues or holding the property in a pension fund, if for example, you should wish to buy.
