Since suffering a fall at Borough School over a year ago, Chloe Peck’s family have finally had some success at getting the 11-year-old moving again. Chloe was a normal, bright and bubbly girl, but after falling on the school play ground early last year, she ended up in agony for weeks. Over a year later, Chloe and her mother Alanna have had to go in search of answers in Sydney, Australia. After Chloe’s fall, she was diagnosed with chronic pain. But it got worse. Two months later, Chloe lost all feeling in both legs and became wheelchair dependent, and was diagnosed with a functional neu rological disorder. After exhausting the New Zealand med ical system and still waiting to hear back from ACC, Alanna Peck decided to try their luck over the ditch and it was the best de cision she has ever made. “First day in rehab, we knew we were in the right place,” Alanna said. For the past five weeks, the pair have been in and out of Sydney’s Advance Reha bilitation Centre for Functional Neurolog ical conditions, and getting some amazing results.“She is progressing every day, and can stand longer,” Alanna said. Chloe has been using Lexo, a robotic-as sisted gait training (RAGT), which helps support her body weight while automa tising the gait process through support and facilitation of movement in her lower limbs.According to Alanna, the robot is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Chloe has two-hour therapy sessions most days, which consist of a variety of physical activities and tasks. And they are already seeing results. The numbness that was travelling down her arms towards her hands has stopped and her right side muscle movements have im proved significantly, Alanna said.

“But it back-flowed into an irrigation pond up there at one stage and there was real concern the irrigation pond was going to let go. “Water was flooding out on to Ashburton Forks Road, and Civil Defence evacuated a few houses that would have been caught had it been breached.

Precautionary evacuations took place when the North Branch of the Ashburton River caused plenty of concerns after breaching its banks on EnvironmentSaturday.Canterbury and Civil Defence had to respond to the river breaching its banks and take quick action to avoid a much larger flooding issue. Sitting Councillor Ian Mackenzie said the rain at the weekend had the North Branch come up faster than any of the other tributaries and at the Ashburton Forks it breached its banks to be flowing out of the river bed but inside the river terrace.

ECan had funded the May floods recovery with a special general rate, which Mackenzie said has left the river scheme reserve intact. “So there is a pool of money for our engineers to use to help fix up the new damage, depending on what the quantity is.” ECan will also seek potential recovery funding from the National Emergency Management Agency, he said. The Ashburton District Council’s roading team is also in the process of assessing the scale of fresh damage to an already battered roading network.Water spilling over an irrigation dam after the North Branch of the Ashburton River breached its banks at the weekend.
With about seven weeks to go before the mobile breast screening unit departs Ashburton, only about a quarter of all eligible women have booked a mammogram. The mobile screening service, provided by ScreenSouth Ltd (SSL) for the national BreastScreen Aotearoa programme, ends in Ashburton on SeptemberThe30. mobile unit became operational from June 8 and so far 504 women have been screened. A further 1525 are on the books to receive a mammogram in the final weeks. General manager, Louise McCarthy, said SSL has a strong focus on health outcomes for Maori and Pasifika women and conducted a Mana Wahine –Women of Strength clinic on July 22 which resulted in 20 women having a mammogram and nine receiving a cervical smear. A further screening day will be held on August 26.

Flooded dam threatened homes
“In the meantime they got in a digger to relieve the pressure on the dam which put the water back down through farm land, but back towards the river, which saved the day. “It was a near run thing.”
The North Branch was still flowing out of its riverbed on Monday, Mackenzie said, “which poses a significant challenge to get it back in”. So far the couple has raised over $5000 through multiple fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis Canterbury.“Wewant to thank everyone, and let them know we are still alive,” Geoffrey chucked. Beef New Zealand Central South Island has postponed its workshop Tactics For Tight Times which was supposed to be on tomorrow at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, but due to weather has cancelled the event. The workshop has now be rescheduled to August 17 at 4pm.The workshop will offer advice from various experts on creating resilient farm systems, financial and farm management tactics.
Geoffrey and Rebecca Barr crossed the South Island Half Marathon finish line hand-in-hand in an effort to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Canterbury branch. The couple self-confessed non-runners, ran 21 kilometres and crossed the finish line in two hours and 38 minutes at Lake Hood in the South Island Half Marathon on Sunday. “It was a little bit emotional,” Rebecca said. Yesterday they were both feeling sore, but relived they did it. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting the lungs and pancreas, and it affects more than 500 people in New Zealand. Two of their nephews have to live with CF, so this was their way to raise some cash and awareness at the same time. They also had five other family members competing in the race, but Geoffrey’s brother, Paul Barr, who was in isolation, decided to do his own 21 kilometres around the Burwood area in Christchurch.
Tickets cost $20 and includes dinner, which would be provided by Mount Hutt College as a fundraiser for their trip to Europe trip next year. Proceeds would also go to the Methven Pony Club. The key speaker will still be Luke Thompson, who represented Japan at two Rugby World Cups and now runs a small deer velveting farm in North Canterbury.

Her daughter, Marla Kavanaugh, is singing in the event, the first time vo calists have been included in the lineup on the castle esplanade Craig is delighted she’ll view the per formance from the Royal Gallery. She was honoured by the Queen two years ago and believes the invitation results from the MNZM (Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) she received at Government House in July 2020. She doesn’t know if royalty will be present, as she’s told their seats are booked under assumed names until they arrive.

The former secretary-general of the New Zea land Olympic Committee, believes New Zea land should consider hosting a future Com monwealth Games. Barry Maister from Methven says the suc cess of our competitors at Birmingham is “great news” and reflects the number of quali ty competitors we have across a large number of Thesports.Commonwealth Games should contin ue because “we do well in them and it exposes our athletes to international competition,” he said. “It’s a stepping stone to the Olympics and other world championships events.” Maister considers the Games are one of the few manifestations of the Commonwealth which he said “will stick together for the event if for no other reason.”
“But there has to be an appetite for them here.”Ifthey were to come downunder, Christchurch is a likely venue, Maister believes. “The venues are there in Canterbury or are coming on stream in Christchurch.”
Innovative water quality approaches were on show at the recent Ashburton Water Zone Committee’s Hekeao Hinds field trip. The field trip gave an opportunity for regional and water zone committee members to join ECan staff and council lors to learn about the innovative tech niques being used by the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust (HHWET) to improve local water quality. HHWET trustees took participants to several managed aquifer recharge (MAR) and near river recharge (NRR) sites to learn about the history of the different sites, the work that has been done to date, and future plans. Stops included sites on Timaru Track Road, Mayfield Klondyke Road, Lennies Road, and a proposed site on Winslow Road.Participants toured a section of Neroli and Harley Davies’ farm, Gawler Downs, where NRR work was under way. The 1187ha property was made up of hills and flat land, perfect for their sheep, deer and beef farming operations. The 2021 Ashburton floods caused damage to some of the farm, so partici pants were shown the work that has taken place since which included saving har akeke/flax from metres of mud, recon structing a wetland and installing around 10,000 native plants into the ground. Canterbury mudfish (threatened) would be released into the wetland and a DOC covenant was in place for lizard habitat.Water quality, river flow, groundwater level and fish population monitoring had shown improvements in all these areas over the last four years due to these steps.

Environment Canterbury’s Brett Paint er said MAR sites involved cleaning the topsoil off an area to create a leaky water basin or “Cleanrace.water is then poured into the area, which trickles down into the groundwater helping clean the ground water system and the springs which are connected to this groundwater,” he said. “An NRR site is the same procedure but, near a river instead of out in the plains. NRR provides a clean water top up to the target river system when flows are low. “These are two of the tools being used to address water quality issues and to help ensure the community meets water legislations,” he said. Painter said the field trip gave him the opportunity to talk about the complex ities of cleaning up a catchment which had been degraded for over 150 years. “I’m really proud of this community, they’ve accepted the challenge of having very high groundwater nitrate concentra tions, and they’re keen to change that as soon as possible,” he said.

They really have been New Zealand’s golden games. Just look at the numbers from Birmingham – 48 medals comprising 19 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze. And it’s a medal tally that would’ve been boosted overnight, with New Zealand lining up in the women’s doubles squash final. It’s New Zealand’s third-most successful Games after Auckland 1990, where 58 medals were won, and Auckland 1950, where our team scooped 54. But Birmingham 2022 will unquestionably go down as New Zealand’s most golden Commonwealth Games. Our 19 gold medals was our best ever, surpassing the haul of 17 won on home soil in Auckland in 1990, which had stood as New Zealand’s record for the past 32 years. But not anymore.

LETTERS Good work I just want to congratulate you and the team at the Ashburton Guardian on the continued great publication that the Guardian is.
Look at our world class squash player Paul Coll and his sheer delight at winning gold in the men’s singles and then again in the mixed doubles with Joelle King, who was so distraught at not winning a medal in the women’s singles.Obviously, the Commonwealth Games means much more to some of these big stars than we appreciate. And behind the success, you can understand why it cuts so deep for so many. Nothing emphasised that better than Christchurch-based high jumper Keeley O’Hagan, who was rightly delighted at improving her personal-best by a centimetre, clearing the bar at 1.89m to finish sixth in the women’s competition.Thisisthesame woman, who though oozing self-assurance and serenity in her jumps, has had to bounce back from such a troubled past because of struggles with her mental and physical health. What she has had to deal with has been nothing short of distressing. There’s been an eating disorder, endometriosis, a string of injuries, recurring illnesses and depression and, as a teenager, she tried to take her ownButlife.at Birmingham she was happy, smiling, focused and clearly relishing the moment as she soared higher than ever before. She wasn’t alone in managing that, it what truly was our golden Games.

What that collective New Zealand team performance shows is that we must be doing many things right in a number of sports. That clearly includes cycling which, with 10 golds, shows it is moving in the right direction after the death of sprinter Olivia Podmore last year resulted in the Cycling New Zealand culture being described as broken and dysfunctional.Andthough Commonwealth Games’ medals don’t guarantee further success at Olympic or world championship level, it’s clearly important. It’s important to the country. Important to the sports involved. And important to the athletes, which we’ve seen in so many ways, and not just for gold medal triumphs Look at the emotional reaction from White Ferns’ cricket captain Sophie Devine after her team got up to thump hosts England in the bronze medal Twenty20 match.Devine, of course, starred in that clash but you could see the importance of that win for her and a young team going through a rebuilding stage.

“That was very satisfying as when we first laid eyes on this bloke, we didn’t even think he would get to the races,” Wilson said. “He just keeps stepping up and it has been a wonderful thrill for us all.
Lord Darci is the first foal out of Wilson’s eight-race winner Madam Victoria, who won four times at Listed level including the 2016 Timaru Stakes. A mud-spattered Moseley was sporting a wide grin after the victory, his first in the“I’verace. always thought he was a nice up and coming horse, but I did think it might be a year too soon for him,” the 55-year-old jockey said.
“He is the seventh or eighth generation out of this family and it is just great to get a good horse again.“He was his own worst enemy there for a while and wanted to win his races at the start. “It took a couple of runs to get the recipe right, and now he has, it is all good.”
A rails-hugging ride by Terry Moseley paved the way for Ashburton galloper Lord Darci to break a 22-year hoodoo for Mid Canterbury stables when he took out the 125th Winter Cup at Riccarton on Bred,Saturday.racedand trained by former All Black Bevan Wilson and his wife Robyn who run their operation out of Ashburton, the five-year-old son of Darci Brahma turned the tables on his laststart conqueror Summer Festival as he out-finished the former Italian Derby winner to win going away by two lengths at the winningAwaypost.well from barrier seven, Lord Darci handled the testing Heavy10 conditions with aplomb, before looming into contention along the inner as the field fanned across the track at the top of the long Riccarton home straight.

Team Wilson end locals drought in Winter Cup
Summer Festival, who had led throughout, was going strongly in front and fought hard when joined by Lord Darci at the 300m before succumbing late in the piece, with Verry Flash running on well from the back to take third albeit eight lengths in arrears of the winner. Wilson was rapt with the performance, as his charge became the first local runner to win the race since McLaskry in 1999.
“With the way the track is playing I thought the older, more seasoned horses might have it but there is no doubt about it, he is a talent.“Bevan had said to me to ensure I didn’t get there (the lead) too soon, and as it turned out I did.“I just jogged up on the corner and hadn’t moved a muscle on him, but he fought really well and is a nice horse in the making.“I hopped off the winner last year (Major Tom) and this is a race that has eluded me, so this is ticking a box, especially when you get to my age.” Lord Darci has now won four of his 13 starts and over $115,000 in prizemoney.

“It’s a great result for netball in MidThatCanterbury.”onesolitary act on the weekend could nearly have been it for the season for the Mid Canterbury squad, with the annual South Island Seniors Championship cancelled due to a lack of entries.MidCanterbury Netball have taken control however, and are working hard behind the scenes to get a tournament off the ground at the EA Networks Centre on September 2 and 3.
PHOTO ASHBURTON BARBARIAN RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB
“We reached out to the netball centres who had entered into the South Island event before it was cancelled, and there’s been some really good feedback, and we’ve had a couple of teams enter already,” Mid Canterbury Netball centre manager, Erin Tasker said.“They won’t be playing for a trophy or anything like that, it’s just a chance for these teams to have some more game time together for the year.”
The winning Mid Canterbury Hanan Shield netball team.
“I think we surprised them early on, we really came out firing and showed what we were all about.“But they came back in the second quarter and we didn’t adjust to their change in style, and we went to the halftime break at 20all.”Playing one hour matches, Mid Canterbury stuck to their guns, but found themselves chasing the game heading into the final quarter down by a few goals –with South Canterbury’s lead out to five at one point. Then something clicked. “It was pretty touch and go there with about seven minutes on the clock, but the girls really started to show their experience and played great netball to get back in front, and then with about four minutes to go, they really stepped it up again and took control.”MidCanterbury went on to win the match 48-45, leaving them needing to just beat North Otago to claim the shield back. And that’s exactly what they did, winning 55-33. “North Otago never really let us get away from them, but we played another really strong game.“Itwas great because we managed to get everyone off the bench and on to the court for that match, and each and every person played their part in the success, which was cool.” With the shield locked away for a year, Meadows said the journey to this point had been one to remember, especially for her in her first season at the helm of the side.“It is truly just a great group of girls. They’ve come together as a team and from the outset on Sunday you could see they were there for one reason and one reason only, and that was to win that shield back.
The tournament began on Sunday morning with South Canterbury easily accounting for North Otago in the opening game. That set up a massive match for Mid Canterbury straight off the bat against their old foes from just down the road in Timaru, and it went right to the wire.
SHORT SHARP& Senior women win Mid Canterbury Hockey’s senior women’s side advanced through to the next stage of the Canterbury Division One Hockey lower grade playo s on the weekend. The side registered a 2-1 win over Southern Sapphires on Saturday afternoon to win their lower quarter-final and set up a semi-final clash with the Hornby Wildcats this weekend in the lower semi-final for sides out of the running from the top prize in the division.

Preseason defeat Mid Canterbury were unsuccessful in their bid to open this year’s Heartland campaign on the right foot, falling to a 23-27 defeat to Ellesmere on Saturday in Prebbleton. They were in the hunt at halftime, down 13-17 after a try to Logan Bonnington, and when Kaydis Hona scored in the second half the match was all on. Mid Canterbury were unable, however, to eat back the margin. Tom Reekie had a strong day with the boot, scoring 13 points. Bassett adds another Mat Bassett continued his run of success as the form indoor bowler in Mid Canterbury this season by adding another title on the weekend. The drawn fours championship saw Bassett skip his side of Neil Atkinson, Bernice Laird and Joan Hardy to success over Grant Wilson, John Lewis, Neil Chapman and Raewyn Robin. The win gave Atkinson his first championship title, Hardy her fourth and Laird her sixth.
Entries for the tournament will close later this month with a number of regions looking set to bring a team to compete.

After 10 years, there’s silverware back in the cabinet of the Ashburton Barbarian Rugby League Club. The passionate side claimed honours in the Premier Men’s Reserve Trophy on the weekend, for the lower placed sides in the main competition throughout the season, but did it the tough way, working through some intense matches in the semi-finals before overpowering Burnham Chevaliers on the weekend to claim the title. With a trophy on the line, the Barbarians came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders on Saturday, scoring three first half tries to all but put the game beyond doubt. Puroku Teokotai opened the scoring after 15 minutes before Maamalo Toumohuni grabbed a double 10 minutes later and with Raui Tare slotting two conversions, they took a 16-0 led into the sheds at halftime. After 10 minutes in the second half, the match was the Ashburton side’s with Taulangi Daniel and Arron Heke both scoring tries to extend the lead. Burnham bounced back with one of their own but tries to Raui and Cruise Tare extended the margin and the Barbarians ran away 36-12 winners.
Trophy in the cabinet Hanan Shield reclaimed Netball’s Hanan Shield is Mid Canterbury’s shield once more. After handing over the netball showpiece between Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago last year, the shield made its way back to Ashburton on Sunday night after the green and golds produced two outstanding efforts in Waimate to claim victory in the annual tournament.“They’re a classy group of girls, it was a pretty special moment,” coach, Cindy Meadows said. “To see them go out there and produce two really dogged performances and do Mid Canterbury proud made me really proud of them, and they should be proud of themselves.”
