On Thursday 21 May 2020, the Federal Court upheld the WorkPac vs Skene 2018 decision, when it decided that a casual mine worker who had regular and predictable shifts was entitled to the same benefits as a permanent member of staff, including accrued annual leave pay. What does this potentially mean for the security industry? In this episode Chris Delaney, ASIAL’s Workplace Relations Advisor, discusses the potential impact of this decision on the security industry. What might it mean for companies who hire casual staff? What can they do to minimise potential claims of a similar nature to the recent court case and what should they be doing moving forward to reduce potential liability. We speak with Damian McMeekin and Tony Zalewski of the Australian Security Medals Foundation, Martin Gill of the Outstanding Security Performance Awards and John Fleming of ASIAL about the ASIAL Awards for Excellence.
