In addition to figurines and other conventional toys, items packaged with sweets include CDs, musical instruments, mobile phone straps and other items that cannot be defined as true toys.

Everyone is Crazy about

Tamagotchis !

When my daughters brought home excellent report cards, I asked them what they wanted and they both unanimously said Tamagotchis. Then began my 2-week search for one. Surprisingly, Toys R’ Us, Target and Wal-mart had sold out. This reminded me of 1996 ..... Sylvia D. Below is an article from Tamagotchi by Erica Horikoshi from Japan. Tamagotchis became popular in the fall of 1996 when they were introduced in Japan by the Bandai Toy Company. They are sold as “interactive digital pets.” First, the fad spread out among high school girls and ofﬁce girls, and then the mass media also put out a lot of news to inform the public about tamagotchi. When a store receives a new shipment of tamagotchi, many people always ﬁnd out and form a huge line outside the store the night before it opens. They wait there all night, sometimes ten hours or longer, hoping to buy one. Everyone is crazy about them.

Problems created by the tamagotchi

It is hard to get a tamagotchi because they are in great demand. The company tries to make more, but stores sell them as fast as the company makes them. There are never 6

enough, so there are a lot of problems. For example, many high school girls play with them while they are in class, and even ofﬁce workers play with them when they should be working. As a result, some schools have made rules against them, and they tell the students not to bring them to school. Another problem is that people steal them from each other. Sometimes, a person who has just bought a tamagotchi is followed by other people who couldn’t get one and who try to take them. Another big problem is that people sell them for too much money, especially the white tomagotchi. On the Internet, these white ones are sold for over 150,000 yen (over $1,500)!

Why people like them Why do tamagotchis attract so many people? One critic said that this phenomenon is

the result of modern times. People who live in cities can’t have pets in apartments of crowded towns. That is why there is so much demand for tamagotchis. People can’t have real pets, so they want virtual pets.

How the tamagotchi works The tamagotchi is egg-shaped, and it has a small screen and three buttons. If you push one of the buttons, an egg hatches. Then you have to feed and take care of the chick. It is like a real pet because it cries when it is hungry or when it wakes up or when it poops. Then you have to push a button to feed it or clean it up. Sometimes, you have to play with it. It’s an easy game, but you have to win. If you win the game, the chick (the tamagotchi) is happy and grows well. However, if you lose, the chick is bad and can even die. The company made 8 different kinds of tamagotchi characters, but you don’t know which one you will get. People all over Japan want to get a tamagotchi, but sometimes they get a strange one. It is usually hard work to take care of them.

The mother of Tamagotchi Aki Maita is 31 years old. She joined the toy kingdom of Bandai in 1990, and is now in charge of the business development and marketing department. Aki said she had always loved to keep pets. That’s why she designed Tamagotchi - a virtual pet that can be brought to anywhere with you. In the process of designing Tamagotchi, Aki made trips to the crowded shopping areas of Tokyo many times and conducted street questionnaire surveys. She also read all the high school girl magazines trying to learn what the young girls are thinking. - Well, all her work obviously paid off!

Tamagotchi Version 1 was released in August 1997 with three different colors. This was later released in America as “Tamagotchi Angel.” Tamagotchi Version 2 Version two of the Tamagotchi Connection (the cousin to Japanese Tamagotchi Plus) was released on June 21, 2005 in the U.S. with new features. Tamagotchi Version 3 The third generation of the Tamagotchi Connection series was released at the end of January 2006. Like the Version 2, it borrows some features from the latest version of the Japanese toy, but greatly simpliﬁes them. This means that the V3 does not go to school, get a career, or receive a salary.

New “Celebrate Cell Phone Open! Tamagotchi Plus” the “Celebrate Cell Phone Open!!! Tamagotchi Plus” electronic pets in Japan, from none other than original creator Bandai. The price is acceptable at around $20, but the main feature of the new toys is their ability to interface with your (Japanese) mobile phone via infrared. Exactly what this results in I know not, but Bandai has said that “point shopping” to buy your pet new items will be possible, and this will also enable your pet to travel. Why wouldn’t Bandai just integrate the tamagotchi into the phone itself so you just need to download an application instead of buy a different device?

Songkran is known as Thai traditional New Year which celebrates on April 13 of every year and lasts for three days. It is also celebrated in Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran day or the day that mark as the end of the old year. April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. The date of the festival was originally set by astrological calculation, but it is now ﬁxed. Songkran tradition is acknowledged as a valuable custom for the Thai community, society and religion. Family members gather to celebrate and respects to the elders on these days by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and exchange gifts to each other. For society, on Songkran days families and friends go out and clean houses, temples, public places and ofﬁcial buildings. In the religion way, people go to temple in the morning and do some religious activities such as offering alms to monks, Dhamma practice, listening to sersom and monks-bathing. Later afternoon, both young and old celebrants are joyfully splashing water on each other (The obvious celebration of Songkran is throwing water). Nowadays people still enjoying the wetness celebration of Songkran by gathering in the streets with bowls of water, water guns or even a garden hose, and drench each other and passersby.

Japan “Sakura”

Hanami (花見, literally means “ﬂower viewing”) is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of ﬂowers. “Flower”, in this case, almost always means Sakura (cherry blossoms) or Ume (plum) blossoms. From late March to early April, Sakura go into full bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (桜前線, “Sakura Zensen” or “cherry blossom front”) is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning Hanami as the blossoms only last a week. Sakura starts to bloom in February and ends in May. The peak time varies depending on the area in Japan. For example, in Okinawa which is the biggest Japanese Southern island, the Hanami season is in January - February, in Hokkaido which is the most Northern part of Japan, it is in May.

In Tokyo area, it is March - April. Crowds of people - families, groups of friends, and groups from companies sit under the fully open cherry blossoms, usually on plastic tarps, and have a picnic celebration. The picnic fare consists of a wide variety of foods, Sake (rice wine), beer, or other drinks. The activities often include dancing and Karaoke in addition to the cherry blossom viewing. In very popular places such as Ueno Park and Aoyama Cemetery in Tokyo, the competition for prime picnic spots is intense. Company groups and famSumida River in Tokyo ily members claim spots by arriving very early in the morning and sitting all day long until the real celebrations begin in the evening. It is not unusual to see a young man in a business suit sitting under a cherry tree early in the morning re-

In Japan, April is the beginning of the school year as well as the business ﬁnancial year. Since the Heian Period (794-1185) ﬂower-viewing parties were popular among the aristocracy. In the Azuchi Momoyama Period (1568-1600) the cherry blossom viewing spread out to the rest of the population. Hanami is a very essential feature of seasonal events in Japan. Amazingly, you can even enjoy Sakura in the U.S. We have many Sakura trees around Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C. Those trees were gifts from Japan in 1910.

COMMUNITY LINKS Indian Dance Troupe from Hindu Society of Central Florida

The 2nd Annual International Kite Festival was recently held on March 26th at the Jay Blanchard Park in East Orlando. This event was sponsored by District 3 Commissioner Mildred Fernandez to promote multicultural unity. Besides kite demonstrations, there were performances by various cultural groups and a broad range of informational displays and booths. The most memorable event of the day was the presentation of a hand-crafted dragon kite, donated by Chinese American Association of Central Florida, to Commissioner Fernandez. The dragon kite was specially ordered and custom made in China. It was over 20 feet long and made up of 50 delicate pieces of Chinese opera masks. It was a true treasure of Chinese craftmanship. The presentation was followed by performances from the Chinese School of Orlando. They executed a perfect choreographed acrobatic and ribbon dance. How could we talk about the International Kite Festival without mentioning the excitement of the children when they received their free kite kits. Also, Hawaiian Kiteworks had professionals demonstrating different techniques of kite flying. They flew a giant Octopus kite which was almost a hundred feet long!! The weather was perfect for kite flying that day and everyone seemed to have a great time!

The founder of the current form of Chanoyu: Senno-Rikyu taught the understanding of Chanoyu in Shiki Shichisoku. Shiki is 和Wa, 敬Kei, 清Sei, and 寂Jaku that are harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Shichisoku is as follows: 1. Make a satisfying bowl of tea 2. Lay the charcoal so that the water boils efficiently 3. Provide a sense of warmth in winter and coolness in summer 4. Arrange the flowers as those they were in the field 5. Be ready ahead of time 6. Be prepared in case it should rain 7. Act with utmost consideration towards your guests. These are the manners how to treat the other people, indicating “with all your heart, grasp the essence, value the sense of the seasons, respect life, feel free of pressure, be gentle-hearted, and respect each other”. The most famous Shoka (Japanese calligrapher) was probably the Buddhist monk Kukai. One story records how the Emperor Tokusokutei asked him to rewrite a section of a badly damaged ﬁve paneled screen. We even have proverbs using his name that are “Kobo mo fude no ayamari” and “Kobo fude o erabazu”. Kobo is another name for Kukai. The former means: Even an expert like Kobo can make a mistake (“Homer sometimes nods”), the latter means: An expert like Kobo can handle any tool (“A poor workman blames his tools”). Kukai is also known as one of the Sanpitsu, lined with Emperor Saga and Tachibanano Hayanari. Sanpitsu are from the 9th century, who followed the Chinese calligraphy style. On the other hand, they were exploring their own styles that were a bridge to the Japanese style. (To be continued…)

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan literally means “Supreme Ultimate Fist” and it is regarded as one of the finest products of Chinese philosophy and culture. Tai Chi is based on the principles of the I Ching, known as the Book of Changes, and the philosophy of Yin and Yang, which means there must be balance in life, as night and day, man and woman, heaven and earth. There have been different theories as to how Tai Chi Chuan originated. One story is that a wise man, Zhang San Feng, saw a crane and serpent fighting and observed their movements. Based on the soft and circular techniques used by the serpent against the direct firm movements of the crane, he created the movements of Tai Chi using the theory

of soft against hard. Another theory is that when he saw the monks practicing with too much force and outer strength, he felt that they had no balance and were clumsy. He then combined the theory of Yin and Yang (balance), with the principles of the Book of Changes (I Ching) and created movements with the inner strength to produce Tai Chi. However, the oldest form of Tai Chi Chuan that is documented is the Chen style, originating over three hundred years ago in China, during the Ming Dynasty. This style had been handed down to the Chen family by a general, Chen Wang Ting, who was from the Wen District, Henan Province, China. In later years, one of their servants, Yang Lu Chan would sneak and watch them practicing the movements and became very interested in learning. In those days, all secrets were passed down only from generation to generation, and were never taught outside of the family. However, Yang Lu Chan was so interested to learn that Chen Chan Hsing accepted him as a student and taught him the Chen style. As the Chen style consists of many twist-

ing, pounding and dynamic movements, Yang Lu Chan gradually modiﬁed the movements by making the form softer and easier to learn; thus the birth of the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan. Yang Lu Chan is now recognized as the originator of the Yang style and is responsible for spreading this style all over China. The Yang style is the most popular style of Tai Chi today especially as it was popular among the royalties due to the ease and softness of the form. Although the Yang style is the most popular, there are many different styles of Tai Chi that people practice all over the world. The basic movements are similar, even though some postures and movements may differ from one style to another. It is also noteworthy to mention that the movements differ from one person to another due to one’s physique and abilities. Shodo Artist / Director of Workshop ManekiNeko As you have been catching a glimpse of her in Asia Trend, Teri Mitchell (Terue Shoji Mitchell) is a talented Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) artist from Yokohama, JAPAN. Her training in Shodo started at the age 6. She was certified to teach Shodo and Nihongo (Japanese language) by Yokohama National University, and also qualified as the highest grade (8th Dan) Shodo artist by Japan Shodo Association. In addition to providing private lessons in Shodo, Nihongo (Japanese language), Japanese cooking and practicing Chanoyu (Tea Ceremony), she started a new project in March, 2006. Workshop ManekiNeko provides a series of workshops which contains three sessions. Each session is for Shodo, Chanoyu, or Japanese cooking. For this spring course, the first workshop was held on 03/08. They worked on Shodo and everyone had great experience. It was very successful. Peter Lau started to learn the Chinese Calligraphy when he was ten. He neither went to formal calligraphy school nor hired a private tutor. He learnt from observing others and practicing constantly. He enjoys practicing the calligraphy because it gives him a way to express his feeling. Same as arts, everyone has his or her own style. He is not a professional calligrapher; however, he likes to demonstrate his calligraphy writing to the public to promote the Chinese Culture. He went to Chinese School of CAACF last summer to have the Cantonese Class students to experience what the traditional calligraphy writing was like. He gave out Lucky Wording at 1st Oriental Supermarket during the past Chinese New Year. He was able to translate the English Name into Chinese Characters for the diners at China Garden Restaurant during the New Year Celebration. All the receivers were very pleased of what he wrote in a piece of red paper symbolizing good lucky in the year. Evisu different, and hence attracts a lot of fans, who are likely to spend at least US$200 to buy a pair of Evisu jeans. The use of high quality denim is also a feature of Evisu. All denim is made from pure American cotton and some of the washed jeans is proceeded by a ‘Seasoning’ process, then it is made into Evisu jeans. The idea of ‘Seasoning’ is just like red wine. Nowadays, Evisu is not only popular in Japan or Asian but also the whole Europe and America. Since this year is the 15th anniversary of Evisu, they co-operated with Puma and a pair of Evisu X Puma jeans was produced. National Vietnamese American Student Conference 2 at the University of Texas at Austin : “Building Bridges” Over 300 students attended VASCON 2, see you at VASCON 3 next year!

Over 300 Students From Across the Country Gathered in Austin, TX to Discuss Human Trafﬁcking, Human Rights, Film & Education Austin, Texas – From March 24 thru 26, 2006, over 300 undergraduate and graduate students from across the country attended the 2nd Vietnamese-American Student Conference known as VASCON 2 (www.vascon2. org) in Austin, Texas. Students came from all over the country including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massa-

chusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas. From the University of Central Florida, Charity Thach, Ricky Ly, Kim Tran, Helen Tran, and Christina Ly of the Vietnamese American Student Association had the unique opportunity to attend the conference. Ricky Ly served as a National Board member for the conference. The purpose of the conference was to inspire and empower its participants to get involved and make a contribution to build a stronger Vietnamese-American community. The conference program included a variety of speakers from diverse backgrounds and professions ranging from entertainment to human rights activism. Võ, two of the highest ranking Vietnamese Americans in elected office, and Reverend Nguyen Van Cuong from Vietnamese Migrant Workers and Brides Office in Taiwan. Specifically, this year human trafficking of Vietnamese women and children was a key focus of the conference. Over 2 million people are trafficked every year to be exploited for sex, labor and other illicit activities. VietAct (Vietnamese Alliance to Combat Trafficking www.vietact.org) is an organization devoted to assist the Vietnamese migrant workers and brides in Taiwan. The conference also featured young Vietnamese American artists and entertain-

ers like VuDoo Soul (www.myspace.com/vudoosoul), spoken word poet and Def Poetry Jam star Bao Phi (www.baophi.com) , Vinh Hua (www.myspace.com/vinhthekid), the hip hop group Magnetic North, the rock bands Thomas Apartment and Pete Nguyen. “The conference was beautiful because it is one of the few times we get to see so many young Vietnamese American community leaders and students together in one place for one weekend. It is truly inspiring and is a dream come true,” said Ricky Ly, a civil engineering major at UCF. “It showed the diversity and richness of the Vietnamese American experience and the hopes of building bridges for a better community.”

Central Florida Asian Americans Celebrate Heritage Month

Orlando – Central Florida Asian Americans are holding its annual “ASIAN GALA” on May 13, 2006 at Orlando Marriott Downtown’s Expo Centre , Orlando Florida. This yearly event is a celebration of Asian American Heritage Month which is traditionally proclaimed by the President of the United States in the month of May. ‘Asian Gala 2006’ is presented by the Asian American Heritage Council in partnership with 33 Asian American organizations, the biggest conglomerate of Asians in Central Florida. The Council is chaired by Tim Madhanagopal, a native of India. The other ofﬁcers are Rebecca Szymanski of the Philippines, Ada Wong and Dr. Jiping Zhang of China. Karen Nguyen of Vietnam chairs this year’s gala. The celebration features a presentation of “Community Leadership Recognition Awards” honoring those who contribute greatly to the Council’s mission of promoting and preserving the culture of Asians, and enhancing the positive image of Asian Americans in the communities where they live and work. Hindu Society of Central Florida presented Indiafest of Greater Orlando on March 18th, 2006. There were variety entertainments including cultural dance and music, booth featuring Indian food, drinks, costumes, and Henna Tattoos. Dr Anita Gupta and Dr Prem K Kathuria (dentist) offered free medical checkup for children. The major attraction for me is this Hindu Temple located at 1994 Lake Drive in Casselberry. This temple started with the successful fund-raising program by Dr. Yesudas in Sept 2001. Site work was completed in March 2003. In October 2003, core structure with roof was ﬁnished. Then, 18 artisans were brought from India to handcraft the interior. The general body of the temple was approved with painting and ﬁnal touchup work in progress in 2004. The temple was opened on June 15th 2005. The completion of this temple indicated a united and strong Indian community here in Orlando to build a multi deity temple combining the northern & southern architecture. 28

Boba Tea is their specialty, and you may have a hard time to choose just one from their huge selection of Milk Tea, Flavored Tea, and Smoothie, though my choices are Black Milk Tea and Honeydew ﬂavored Jasmine Milk Tea. Orlando – Orange County Property Appraiser Bill Donegan unveiled his new homestead exemption application on line capability today allowing property owners to preﬁle applications for the $25,000 homestead exemption deduction for the 2007 tax roll from his website: www.ocpaﬂ.org. “We are extremely pleased to be able to take the lead in Florida by offering this service to our customers,” Donegan said. “In these busy times, this new on-line application process delivers on our promise to provide easier, quicker and friendlier service to Orange County property owners.” New homeowners will be mailed a packet within 4 to 6 weeks after their new deed is recorded in the county records. Current property owners who have experienced a transfer of title, such as an addition or re-

moval of a name on the title, name change from divorce, death of a spouse or establishing a trust, will also be mailed a packet. The incidence of diabetes has more than tripled over the past few decades, and the increase has been especially dramatic in recent years. Sedentary lifestyle and increasing body weight seem to be important causes. What does this mean for you and your family? Diabetes is a condition in which too much glucose (sugar) is in the blood. Normally, the body’s cells take glucose from the blood for use as energy. This requires the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas.

Type 1 Diabetes

If insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed, the body cannot use glucose, and it builds up in the blood and overﬂows into the urine. This is known as insulin-dependent (IDDM), or type 1 diabetes. It is seen mostly in people under 30 years of age.

Another, much more common form of diabetes is called non-insulin dependent (NIDDM), or type 2 diabetes. It occurs when the pancreas makes some insulin, but cannot make enough or when the insulin does not work effectively. This type is seen most often in people who are over 40 years of age, overweight, and have a family history of the disease. About 90% of people who have diabetes have type 2. Many people have this disorder and do not know it.

Usual Symptoms

The usual symptoms of diabetes are thirst, frequent need to go to urinate, and weight loss despite eating more. Other symptoms, especially with type 2 diabetes, may be more subtle and can include fatigue, blurred vision, slow healing of sores, frequent infections, and tingling or loss of feeling in hands or feet. A simple ofﬁce blood test can conﬁrm the diagnosis.

Management

The goal in treating either type 1 or type 2 diabetes is to bring the blood glucose level down within normal range. Regular exercise and a balanced diet low in concentrated sweets and calorie are very important. Your doctor can help you plan an exercise and diet program tailored speciﬁcally to your needs. If you have diabetes, you will also learn how to test your blood so you can keep track of highs and lows in blood glucose levels. Blood testing usually requires a ﬁnger prick. Then a drop of blood is placed on a test strip that is inserted into a special glucose meter. The meter shows the blood glucose level in just a few seconds. People who have type 2 diabetes often can control blood glucose levels with diet, exercise, and weight loss

alone. If not, oral medications that lower blood glucose may help. However, sometimes insulin is also needed to control type 2 diabetes.

The risk for Cardiovascular Diseases

Too much glucose in the blood can damage blood vessels, especially those in the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys. Diabetes can also increase the risk of foot ulcers that don’t heal normally. And, most important, the risk of heart disease is very high for people who have diabetes. Complications may not appear until diabetes has been present for a number of years. However, many long-term complications can be prevented if diabetes is recognized and treated early. Therefore, it is extremely important to see your doctor regularly.

Exercise, Exercise and Exercise

Diabetes is likely to become even more common as the population ages and people become less active. You can do a number of things to prevent problems later on. Start today by watching your weight and getting enough exercise. Even small changes can have big payoffs.
