The Admiral Zheng He (鄭和; Birth name: 馬三寶; Arabic name: Hajji Mahmud) (1371 — 1433), is the most well-known Chinese navigator and explorer who made the voyages collectively referred to as the travels of “Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean” (三保太監下 西洋) or “Zheng He to the Western Ocean”, from 1405 to 1433. Life magazine ranked Zheng He the 14th most important person of the last millennium. During his 28 year naval career, Admiral Zheng visited 37 countries, traveled around the tip of Africa into

Capsule Toys! Capsule toys, cool toys that are so popular in Asia and ebay Capsule toys are so popular in Japan. The capsule toy field has yet to grow into a large market today. The toys-with-sweets1genre refers to products consisting of toys packaged in combination with candy or snacks, and merchandised mainly on the confectionary shelves of supermarkets, convenience stores and other retailers. In addition to figurines and other conventional toys, items packaged with sweets include CDs, musical instruments, mobile phone straps and other items that cannot be defined as true toys.
the toy component is generally the focus. The major buy-factor is the inclusion of elaborate figurines and other premiums, rather than the generally low prices of around 25 cents. Most toys-with-sweets are associated with a product series, such as animals, vehicles, animation/TV characters or various other genres. The lineups include large numbers of figurines to reflect current themes in the respective series. Collecting these figurines is a key factor motivating consumers to continue purchasing a particular series.

The business partnership expanded Bandai’s toys-with-sweets sales route fivefold, from some 300 stores to 1,600 stores. Bandai now aims to expand distribution in Hong Kong and grow its toys-with-sweets sales from 50 million yen to about 1 billion yen by 2007.

Everyone is Crazy about
Tamagotchis !
When my daughters brought home excellent report cards, I asked them what they wanted and they both unanimously said Tamagotchis. Then began my 2-week search for one. Surprisingly, Toys R’ Us, Target and Wal-mart had sold out. This reminded me of 1996 ..... Sylvia D. Below is an article from Tamagotchi by Erica Horikoshi from Japan. Tamagotchis became popular in the fall of 1996 when they were introduced in Japan by the Bandai Toy Company. They are sold as “interactive digital pets.” First, the fad spread out among high school girls and office girls, and then the mass media also put out a lot of news to inform the public about tamagotchi. When a store receives a new shipment of tamagotchi, many people always find out and form a huge line outside the store the night before it opens. They wait there all night, sometimes ten hours or longer, hoping to buy one. Everyone is crazy about them.
Problems created by the tamagotchi
It is hard to get a tamagotchi because they are in great demand. The company tries to make more, but stores sell them as fast as the company makes them. There are never 6
enough, so there are a lot of problems. For example, many high school girls play with them while they are in class, and even office workers play with them when they should be working. As a result, some schools have made rules against them, and they tell the students not to bring them to school. Another problem is that people steal them from each other. Sometimes, a person who has just bought a tamagotchi is followed by other people who couldn’t get one and who try to take them. Another big problem is that people sell them for too much money, especially the white tomagotchi. On the Internet, these white ones are sold for over 150,000 yen (over $1,500)!
Why people like them Why do tamagotchis attract so many people? One critic said that this phenomenon is
the result of modern times. People who live in cities can’t have pets in apartments of crowded towns. That is why there is so much demand for tamagotchis. People can’t have real pets, so they want virtual pets.
How the tamagotchi works The tamagotchi is egg-shaped, and it has a small screen and three buttons. If you push one of the buttons, an egg hatches. Then you have to feed and take care of the chick. It is like a real pet because it cries when it is hungry or when it wakes up or when it poops. Then you have to push a button to feed it or clean it up. Sometimes, you have to play with it. It’s an easy game, but you have to win. If you win the game, the chick (the tamagotchi) is happy and grows well. However, if you lose, the chick is bad and can even die. The company made 8 different kinds of tamagotchi characters, but you don’t know which one you will get. People all over Japan want to get a tamagotchi, but sometimes they get a strange one. It is usually hard work to take care of them.
The mother of Tamagotchi Aki Maita is 31 years old. She joined the toy kingdom of Bandai in 1990, and is now in charge of the business development and marketing department. Aki said she had always loved to keep pets. That’s why she designed Tamagotchi - a virtual pet that can be brought to anywhere with you. In the process of designing Tamagotchi, Aki made trips to the crowded shopping areas of Tokyo many times and conducted street questionnaire surveys. She also read all the high school girl magazines trying to learn what the young girls are thinking. - Well, all her work obviously paid off!
Tamagotchi Version 1 was released in August 1997 with three different colors. This was later released in America as “Tamagotchi Angel.” Tamagotchi Version 2 Version two of the Tamagotchi Connection (the cousin to Japanese Tamagotchi Plus) was released on June 21, 2005 in the U.S. with new features. Tamagotchi Version 3 The third generation of the Tamagotchi Connection series was released at the end of January 2006. Like the Version 2, it borrows some features from the latest version of the Japanese toy, but greatly simplifies them. This means that the V3 does not go to school, get a career, or receive a salary.
New “Celebrate Cell Phone Open! Tamagotchi Plus” the “Celebrate Cell Phone Open!!! Tamagotchi Plus” electronic pets in Japan, from none other than original creator Bandai. The price is acceptable at around $20, but the main feature of the new toys is their ability to interface with your (Japanese) mobile phone via infrared. Exactly what this results in I know not, but Bandai has said that “point shopping” to buy your pet new items will be possible, and this will also enable your pet to travel. Why wouldn’t Bandai just integrate the tamagotchi into the phone itself so you just need to download an application instead of buy a different device?

by Assakorn Sae-Heng
Songkran is known as Thai traditional New Year which celebrates on April 13 of every year and lasts for three days. It is also celebrated in Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran day or the day that mark as the end of the old year. The National Flower of
Japan “Sakura”
Spring is the Hanami season in Japan. By Teri Mitchell
Sakura in full bloom
Hanami (花見, literally means “flower viewing”) is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers. “Flower”, in this case, almost always means Sakura (cherry blossoms) or Ume (plum) blossoms. From late March to early April, Sakura go into full bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (桜前線, “Sakura Zensen” or “cherry blossom front”) is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning Hanami as the blossoms only last a week. Sakura starts to bloom in February and ends in May. The peak time varies depending on the area in Japan. For example, in Okinawa which is the biggest Japanese Southern island, the Hanami season is in January - February, in Hokkaido which is the most Northern part of Japan, it is in May.
10
In Tokyo area, it is March - April. Crowds of people - families, groups of friends, and groups from companies sit under the fully open cherry blossoms, usually on plastic tarps, and have a picnic celebration. The picnic fare consists of a wide variety of foods, Sake (rice wine), beer, or other drinks. The activities often include dancing and Karaoke in addition to the cherry blossom viewing. In very popular places such as Ueno Park and Aoyama Cemetery in Tokyo, the competition for prime picnic spots is intense. Company groups and famSumida River in Tokyo ily members claim spots by arriving very early in the morning and sitting all day long until the real celebrations begin in the evening. It is not unusual to see a young man in a business suit sitting under a cherry tree early in the morning re-
Sakura and Osaka Castle
serving a space for his company. The new employees are traditionally given this job of sitting all day long to reserve space for the company celebration. In Japan, April is the beginning of the school year as well as the business financial year. Since the Heian Period (794-1185) flower-viewing parties were popular among the aristocracy. In the Azuchi Momoyama Period (1568-1600) the cherry blossom viewing spread out to the rest of the population. Hanami is a very essential feature of seasonal events in Japan. Amazingly, you can even enjoy Sakura in the U.S. We have many Sakura trees around Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C. Those trees were gifts from Japan in 1910.

The 2nd Annual International Kite Festival was recently held on March 26th at the Jay Blanchard Park in East Orlando. This event was sponsored by District 3 Commissioner Mildred Fernandez to promote multicultural unity. Besides kite demonstrations, there were performances by various cultural groups and a broad range of informational displays and booths. The most memorable event of the day was the presentation of a hand-crafted dragon kite, donated by Chinese American Association of Central Florida, to Commissioner Fernandez. The dragon kite was specially ordered and custom made in China. It was over 20 feet long and made up of 50 delicate pieces of Chinese opera masks. It was a true treasure of Chinese craftmanship. The presentation was followed by performances from the Chinese School of Orlando. They executed a perfect choreographed acrobatic and ribbon dance. How could we talk about the International Kite Festival without mentioning the excitement of the children when they received their free kite kits. Also, Hawaiian Kiteworks had professionals demonstrating different techniques of kite flying. They flew a giant Octopus kite which was almost a hundred feet long!! The weather was perfect for kite flying that day and everyone seemed to have a great time!

A Film by Ham Tran
Le. Christina Nguyen, and Van Reviewed by Ricky Ly,
Orlando, FL - This past month at the Florida Film Festival held in Orlando, a unique film was screened with special significance to the Vietnamese American community. The movie, called Journey from the Fall, or “Vuot Song,” is a story thirty years in the making.
around him, he and many others who fought for the South are treated like prisoners. In the camps, they are told to confess to their wrongdoings, forced to do labor in the jungles, and clear deadly land mines. Lam tells his wife, “If the opportunity comes, I want you to take the family and go.”
Black April
Journey of the boat people
On April 30, 1975, the city of Saigon, Republic of Vietnam fell to the communist North. This day is also known as Black April, or Ngay Quoc Han, marking the end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of the exodus of millions of Vietnamese who risked death to find freedom. Over two million people were imprisoned, another two million fled by boat. Some thought their families were dead. This is the tragic beginnings of the journey of the Vietnamese American people; a journey filled with escapes by unseaworthy fishing boats, threat of starvation and hunger, pirates who raped and pillaged, and months in refugee camps. In America,
The story is about how one family learns that when all else is lost, there is still hope. The wife, Mai, takes her husband’s mother, Ba Noi played by Kieu Chinh, and her son Lai, to America by escaping Vietnam by boat. The film vividly portrays the journey of the boat people and also the persecution faced by prisoners of the re-education camps. Monica Mai, a young Vietnamese-American business administration major from the University of Central Florida remarked, “I learned a lot about the pain and struggles my own parents went through. We never talked too much about their experiences, but seeing it in film on screen almost as if it was happening for real is a whole different feeling. I feel like I understand them better now.” Director Ham Tran, who attended the Vietnamese American Student Conference in Austin, Texas in March, told students that he feels that “it is time that the story of the
whole new struggles awaited for them: adapting to a new language, a new culture, a new life. Leaving their homelands with no material possessions, but rather the spiritual hopes and dreams of their people for a new day, the Vietnamese American people were able to build new lives and new communities in America. In the film, Lam Nguyen, a former officer in the army of the Republic of Vietnam is imprisoned in a re-education camp in the new communist Vietnamese government. As the country undergoes vast social reforms 14
Ricky Ly met Director Ham Tran during VASCON 2 in Austin, Texas
Vietnamese American people is finally told. Thirty years have passed, it is time.” Upon arriving in America, it seems like the journey of Mai and her family has just begun. In order to support her family, Mai works over time late into the night at a sewing factory. This causes her son to feel isolated and un-loved as he struggles with discrimination at school and adjusting to life in a new country. This film is definitely a conversation starter for many youths who want to better communicate and understand their parents and their struggles with the aftermath of the war. For now, the only way to catch this film will be to watch it at a Film Festival. 1. Energy, qi, (pronounced “chee”), should flow freely through your home, entering through the front door and exiting out the back. Clutter, sharp angles, nooks and crannies, and storage areas can slow down energy, causing it to stagnate and become unhealthful. 2. Energy should not disappear so quickly it has no time to do any good, so if your front door has an unimpeded view to the back door, consider blocking it with screens. 3. Busy streets, train tracks, and airplane flight paths all generate energy that may move too fast to enter your home. A wall, trees, shrubbery, and hanging plants are often used to slow down or to screen out fast-moving or negative energy. A weathervane or water, such as a fountain in the front of the house, might also help. 4. Intersections create lots of qi. of the house can deflect energy. 5. Balance is a cornerstone of happiness and good design. Everything from exterior lamp poles to inside decorations might need balancing to generate harmonious energy.
6. Sharp, jutting angles need to be softened by placing plants or statues in front. 7. Furniture in the living room should facilitate movement and conversation. Since the living room is a yang area, consider adding yin influences with plants, soft cushions, and perhaps a fish tank.
8. The foot of a bed should not be in a direct line to the door since in ancient China the dead were laid with their feet toward the door of the death house for easier access to heaven. 9. Mirrors should not face a bed because the spirit leaves the body in the night and might get upset at seeing its reflection, causing a disturbed sleep. 10.Round dining room tables are best since the circle symbolized heavenly blessings. Dining room chairs should be of an even number and should be comfortable. Décor should be simple so as not to distract from the food. 11.Food represents wealth to the Chinese, and therefore the kitchens can generate general happiness. Kitchens should be balanced because of the presence of two major elements—fire, with its yang energy, and water, which is a yin force. 12.The bathroom is the most yin room in the house because of the presence of water. Yang elements, such as bright colors or candles may be added. 13.Gardens create a pleasant view. They should contain balance and have a natural look. Flowering plants will bring good luck.

Chanoyu—
Japanese Tea Ceremony By Teri Mitchell
The founder of the current form of Chanoyu: Senno-Rikyu taught the understanding of Chanoyu in Shiki Shichisoku. Shiki is 和Wa, 敬Kei, 清Sei, and 寂Jaku that are harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Shichisoku is as follows: 1. Make a satisfying bowl of tea 2. Lay the charcoal so that the water boils efficiently 3. Provide a sense of warmth in winter and coolness in summer 4. Arrange the flowers as those they were in the field 5. Be ready ahead of time 6. Be prepared in case it should rain 7. Act with utmost consideration towards your guests. These are the manners how to treat the other people, indicating “with all your heart, grasp the essence, value the sense of the seasons, respect life, feel free of pressure, be gentle-hearted, and respect each other”. (To be continued…)
The most famous Shoka (Japanese calligrapher) was probably the Buddhist monk Kukai. One story records how the Emperor Tokusokutei asked him to rewrite a section of a badly damaged five paneled screen. We even have proverbs using his name that are “Kobo mo fude no ayamari” and “Kobo fude o erabazu”. Kobo is another name for Kukai. The former means: Even an expert like Kobo can make a mistake (“Homer sometimes nods”), the latter means: An expert like Kobo can handle any tool (“A poor workman blames his tools”). Kukai is also known as one of the Sanpitsu, lined with Emperor Saga and Tachibanano Hayanari. Sanpitsu are from the 9th century, who followed the Chinese calligraphy style. On the other hand, they were exploring their own styles that were a bridge to the Japanese style. (To be continued…)

History of
Tai Chi Chuan
Edited Text taken from the book “The Tai Chi World of Suzy Chan” author Suzy Chan
太 極 拳
Tai Chi Chuan literally means “Supreme Ultimate Fist” and it is regarded as one of the finest products of Chinese philosophy and culture. Tai Chi is based on the principles of the I Ching, known as the Book of Changes, and the philosophy of Yin and Yang, which means there must be balance in life, as night and day, man and woman, heaven and earth. There have been different theories as to how Tai Chi Chuan originated. One story is that a wise man, Zhang San Feng, saw a crane and serpent fighting and observed their movements. Based on the soft and circular techniques used by the serpent against the direct firm movements of the crane, he created the movements of Tai Chi using the theory

of soft against hard. Another theory is that when he saw the monks practicing with too much force and outer strength, he felt that they had no balance and were clumsy. He then combined the theory of Yin and Yang (balance), with the principles of the Book of Changes (I Ching) and created movements with the inner strength to produce Tai Chi. However, the oldest form of Tai Chi Chuan that is documented is the Chen style, originating over three hundred years ago in China, during the Ming Dynasty. This style had been handed down to the Chen family by a general, Chen Wang Ting, who was from the Wen District, Henan Province, China. In later years, one of their servants, Yang Lu Chan would sneak and watch them practicing the movements and became very interested in learning. In those days, all secrets were passed down only from generation to generation, and were never taught outside of the family. However, Yang Lu Chan was so interested to learn that Chen Chan Hsing accepted him as a student and taught him the Chen style. As the Chen style consists of many twist-
ing, pounding and dynamic movements, Yang Lu Chan gradually modified the movements by making the form softer and easier to learn; thus the birth of the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan. Yang Lu Chan is now recognized as the originator of the Yang style and is responsible for spreading this style all over China. The Yang style is the most popular style of Tai Chi today especially as it was popular among the royalties due to the ease and softness of the form. Although the Yang style is the most popular, there are many different styles of Tai Chi that people practice all over the world. The basic movements are similar, even though some postures and movements may differ from one style to another. It is also noteworthy to mention that the movements differ from one person to another due to one’s physique and abilities. Today, the more popular styles of Tai Chi Chuan include the Chen, Yang, Wu and the Sung. Part II - Benefits of Tai Chi Chuan in the next edition of Asia Trend Magazine.

Chinese Calligraphy
Peter Lau started to learn the Chinese Calligraphy when he was ten. He neither went to formal calligraphy school nor hired a private tutor. He learnt from observing others and practicing constantly. He enjoys practicing the calligraphy because it gives him a way to express his feeling. Same as arts, everyone has his or her own style. He is not a professional calligrapher; however, he likes to demonstrate his calligraphy writing to the public to promote the Chinese Culture. He went to Chinese School of CAACF last summer to have the Cantonese Class students to experience what the traditional calligraphy writing was like. He gave out Lucky Wording at 1st Oriental Supermarket during the past Chinese New Year. He was able to translate the English Name into Chinese Characters for the diners at China Garden Restaurant during the New Year Celebration. All the receivers were very pleased of what he wrote in a piece of red paper symbolizing good lucky in the year. If you interested in seeing his next demonstration, please meet him at the upcoming International Folk Festival on April 29 at Casselberry City Hall. ASIA LIFESTYLE combing the Japanese handicraft EVISU traditions with vintage jeans By Arthur Tsui
Every pair of Evisu jeans is made from 100% Japanese indigo dyed denim and features 23 details which makes each pair unique.
Jeans are always said to be the most common fashion in the world. A laborer in a factory wears jeans. On the other hand, a fashionable designer in an office wears jeans as well. There is no limit of social status to wear jeans in every society. Jeans always acts as a type of uniform for everyone. Statistics show that every American, on average owns at least three pairs of jeans. This really show how popular jeans are. In America, Levi’s is always thought of as the original jeans. In Asia, however, the original jeans must be Evisu, since it provides high quality sewing, cutting and especially the denim which, is always the goal of Hidehiko Yamane, the founder of Evisu. Hidehiko Yamane founded Evis in 1991 in Japan. However, as the name was too similar to Levi’s, the name was changed into Evisu later on. A big shearwater shape logo on the
back pocket is the main feature of Evisu. It looks like a capital letter ‘M’ which gives people a profound impression and hence makes Evisu become famous in the international
jeans market. A c t u a l l y, the idea of the big ‘M’ logo was from the Mshape knit of Levi’s back packet. However, Hidehiko Yamane is able to create the shearwater logo into different pattern. It makes the design of

Evisu different, and hence attracts a lot of fans, who are likely to spend at least US$200 to buy a pair of Evisu jeans. The use of high quality denim is also a feature of Evisu. All denim is made from pure American cotton and some of the washed jeans is proceeded by a ‘Seasoning’ process, then it is made into Evisu jeans. The idea of ‘Seasoning’ is just like red wine. When the length of the process is longer, the washing pattern and color look better. Moreover, Levi’s influenced the creative ideas of early Evisu so much, not only the idea of ‘M’ logo coming from Levi’s, but also the earlier Evisu production process. The first pair of Evisu jeans was made from the tailor machine of 1920’s and uses Levi’s 501XX as the base idea to design a pair of ‘new century’ jeans. Although Levi’s is the basic designing idea, Hidehiko Yamane also combines a lot of modern design in the detail part of the jeans. This makes Evisu become the king of the jeans in the next century. Nowadays, Evisu is not only popular in Japan or Asian but also the whole Europe and America. Since this year is the 15th anniversary of Evisu, they co-operated with Puma and a pair of Evisu X Puma jeans was produced. Evisu Jeans are really representative of the high quality jeans in the world.

Why Bluetooth headset (ii) The first thing to point out is that any of these headsets are a good choice for working hands-free with a mobile phone. While you might want to look at secondary features, like battery life or long-term wearing comfort to determine which one is for you, they will all work with a variety of Bluetooth-enabled phones from most of the major manufacturers. All the manufacturers say their headsets will work with most mobiles supporting the Bluetooth v1.1 profile. When it comes to making a connection with a PC or a PDA, some brand is not work, it only works with mobile phones. Using any of these headsets for speech recognition is putting them into an environment for which they are not primarily designed. That doesn’t mean you can’t obtain satisfactory results, though. Some headset work adequately with this application and will provide you with the freedom to move around your office while dictating text –something that many users of speech recognition software will value highly. Cutie Cube The trendy Nissan Cube five-door wagon should make its debut in U.S. showrooms sometime in 2008. The Cube compact vehicle will be Nissan’s answer to the Scion xB and Honda Element, with an upright body style that’s caught on with the younger buyers flocking to Toyota’s Scion showrooms. The Cube is expected to be priced likely in the $11,500 range, and could be introduced first in select West and East Coast markets where Toyota has had strong success with the xB.

By Shally Wong
Hindu Society of Central Florida presented Indiafest of Greater Orlando on March 18th, 2006. There were variety entertainments including cultural dance and music, booth featuring Indian food, drinks, costumes, and Henna Tattoos. Dr Anita Gupta and Dr Prem K Kathuria (dentist) offered free medical checkup for children. The major attraction for me is this Hindu Temple located at 1994 Lake Drive in Casselberry. This temple started with the successful fund-raising program by Dr. Yesudas in Sept 2001. Site work was completed in March 2003. In October 2003, core structure with roof was finished. Then, 18 artisans were brought from India to handcraft the interior. The general body of the temple was approved with painting and final touchup work in progress in 2004. The temple was opened on June 15th 2005. The completion of this temple indicated a united and strong Indian community here in Orlando to build a multi deity temple combining the northern & southern architecture. 28

ASIA EATS
Q-Cup
By Teri Mitchell
— Contemporary Oriental Café Since their grand opening in December 2003, I have been going to this cute tasty place to pick up my favorite drink; Boba Milk Tea. Boba Tea is their specialty, and you may have a hard time to choose just one from their huge selection of Milk Tea, Flavored Tea, and Smoothie, though my choices are Black Milk Tea and Honeydew flavored Jasmine Milk Tea. By the way, what’s Boba? Boba is a type of Tapioca pearls made from Tapioca fruits which are a potato family. Tapioca pearls are common in several countries in Asia, but “Tapioca drinks are originally from Taiwan,” the Q-Cup owner Gary says. Besides those fun drinks, you will enjoy their mouth-watering snacks. I love their Calamari. It’s the best Calamari ever in town so far. Their combo is the most convenient and fun meal which comes with an entree, a side, and a drink. If you are a vegetarian, try their fried Tofu or vegetable rolls (veggies rolled in crepe). Their best sellers are Q-Pop Chicken and Satay Chicken. They also serve some popular Japanese food

such as Sushi, Eel Rice, Udon Noodles, and some appetizers including Eda-mame (green soybeans). Gary says their food is “a fusion of oriental flavors -- Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese”. Try their new menus; Hamachi Kama (Yellow Tail Fish Neck) / Diablo Roll. Try their Fresh Juice; Watermelon / Papaya Milk. If you would like something sweet, their fabulous crepes will satisfy you. Q-Cup is a good place to have a party too. If your group needs the entire space, they will close the cafe for you. They do delivery too, for your home party or for your homey day. They go far depending on the order price. Their busiest time is Saturday all day and Sunday 12:00-3:00pm. If you would like to sit down and have a quiet relaxing time, you had better stop by on weekdays.

hat’s the right model for my business in China? – it’s a question many American companies consider when planning their China entry strategy. low-risk starting point for China. “Hong Kong should be the first step in any SMEs China strategy,” he says. “Adding to this, Hong Kong borders a region known as the Pearl River Delta. This is where a lot of the real action in China taking place.” says Ballard. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, located just north of Hong Kong on the southern tip of the Chinese Mainland, has been one of China’s major success stories. With its key cities, Shenzhen, Dongguan and Guangzhou, for the past 20 years the PRD has recorded a phenomenal average annual growth of 17 per cent. “It’s been the fastest growing part of the fastest growing province, of the fastest
growing large economy in the world for the last 20 years,” explains Professor Michael Enright, formerly based at Harvard and now a senior professor at the University of Hong Kong. “And with its proximity to Hong Kong, you’ve got first-world market knowledge, access to international markets, access to information, access to technology, access to finance, access to everything that it takes to commercialise a product,” adds Enright. Jack Maisano, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong Agrees. “Sure there are other cities in China. It is very big place. But Hong Kong has a convertible currency, English is the official language and the legal system is based on English common law. “On the other hand, Shanghai is a domestic economy serving the Yangtze River Delta and over a thousand kilometers from Hong Kong,” adds Maisano. “The reality is there’s plenty of room for other cities in China – but only one has the advantages of Hong Kong.” Source: www.tdctrade.com

ASIA HEALTH
Chiropractic and Your Health By Dr. Gary King
Chiropractic is oriented toward preventive health care. Nutrition, rest, good posture, exercise and periodic spinal adjustments help add up to a healthy lifestyle. Taking responsibility for your health helps reduce the need for costly medication, surgery and/or hospitalization. From its founding 100 years ago, chiropractic has been based on the premise that the human body has amazing sustaining and recuperative powers. A healthy spine and nervous system assure that the body’s recuperative powers can operate at their full potential. The benefits of spinal adjusting to remove misalignments or nerve interference have been confirmed by recent scientific studies, although the practice itself can be traced back into ancient history. Ancient Romans and Oriental “Tui Na” practitioners incorporated “bone” manipulation into their treatment methods for the sick. Today’s modern Chiropractor has come a long way in terms of adjustment methods and analysis. In addition, Chiropractors are extensively trained
in anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and nutrition. A good doctor will teach patients how to properly feed and nourish their bodies in addition to getting their spines adjusted. Your body can’t heal properly if it doesn’t have all the right materials available. Nutrition is the science of food and other substances as well as the action, interaction and balance of different nutrients in the body. Eating a balanced diet can make you less prone to diseases and ailments and helps keep your immune system functioning properly. Sadly, it is next to impossible to eat the perfect diet. Nutritional supplementation is necessary for everyone since most of our food has been so processed it is essentially worthless. Some people are already taking handfuls of supplements and wondering why they are still getting sick. Others are so overwhelmed and confused by the abundance of vitamins and supplements they simply give up. The answers lie in the type of nutritional supplement you are taking and which ones you are taking. A whole food supplement is essentially food with only the water and fiber
removed. Most of the store-bought supplements are going to be synthetic as opposed to whole food. The body sees each of them completely differently and it makes a difference in the long run. Discuss true health and wellness with your Chiropractor and come up with a strategy together for maintaining (or regaining) optimum health. King Health Center offers an excellent nutritional supplementation program that can be tailor-made to your specific needs via a computer aided analysis and a talk with the doctor. Chiropractic care coupled with sensible nutritional supplementation can give your body the best chance for avoiding illness, eliminating pain, increasing your energy levels, and improving the overall quality of your life. So many suffering patients who were told that “it’s all in your head” found relief through Chiropractic and Nutritional supplementation. Remember, good health can only come from the insideout. Take the first step towards true health today.
Dr. Gary King, with 7 years of Chiropractic practice, opened the King Health Center clinic in Winter Park. His mission is to educate the public about how to live a healthier, more vibrant life without drugs or surgery. The staff speaks Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and English to effectively communicate with the diverse variety of patients in the Central Florida area. ASIA HEALTH People who have type 1 diabetes need insulin injections daily.
Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes Puxiao Cen, M.D.
The incidence of diabetes has more than tripled over the past few decades, and the increase has been especially dramatic in recent years. Sedentary lifestyle and increasing body weight seem to be important causes. What does this mean for you and your family? Diabetes is a condition in which too much glucose (sugar) is in the blood. Normally, the body’s cells take glucose from the blood for use as energy. This requires the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas.
Type 1 Diabetes
If insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed, the body cannot use glucose, and it builds up in the blood and overflows into the urine. This is known as insulin-dependent (IDDM), or type 1 diabetes. It is seen mostly in people under 30 years of age.

Another, much more common form of diabetes is called non-insulin dependent (NIDDM), or type 2 diabetes. It occurs when the pancreas makes some insulin, but cannot make enough or when the insulin does not work effectively. This type is seen most often in people who are over 40 years of age, overweight, and have a family history of the disease. About 90% of people who have diabetes have type 2. Many people have this disorder and do not know it.
Usual Symptoms
The usual symptoms of diabetes are thirst, frequent need to go to urinate, and weight loss despite eating more. Other symptoms, especially with type 2 diabetes, may be more subtle and can include fatigue, blurred vision, slow healing of sores, frequent infections, and tingling or loss of feeling in hands or feet. A simple office blood test can confirm the diagnosis.
Management
The goal in treating either type 1 or type 2 diabetes is to bring the blood glucose level down within normal range. Regular exercise and a balanced diet low in concentrated sweets and calorie are very important. Your doctor can help you plan an exercise and diet program tailored specifically to your needs. If you have diabetes, you will also learn how to test your blood so you can keep track of highs and lows in blood glucose levels. Blood testing usually requires a finger prick. Then a drop of blood is placed on a test strip that is inserted into a special glucose meter. The meter shows the blood glucose level in just a few seconds. People who have type 2 diabetes often can control blood glucose levels with diet, exercise, and weight loss
alone. If not, oral medications that lower blood glucose may help. However, sometimes insulin is also needed to control type 2 diabetes.
The risk for Cardiovascular Diseases
Too much glucose in the blood can damage blood vessels, especially those in the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys. Diabetes can also increase the risk of foot ulcers that don’t heal normally. And, most important, the risk of heart disease is very high for people who have diabetes. Complications may not appear until diabetes has been present for a number of years. However, many long-term complications can be prevented if diabetes is recognized and treated early. Therefore, it is extremely important to see your doctor regularly.
Exercise, Exercise and Exercise
Diabetes is likely to become even more common as the population ages and people become less active. You can do a number of things to prevent problems later on. Start today by watching your weight and getting enough exercise. Even small changes can have big payoffs.
