Fresh Off The Boat – Eddie Huang Eddie Huang, host of the Vice.com Fresh off the Boat series and author of the newly released (also titled) Fresh Off The Boat memoir, recently visited his alma mater Rollins College on Tuesday March 19, 2013 for a “reading” of his new book. In addition to being recently having his TED Fellowship revoked for hanging out with porn star Asa Akira in LA, Eddie spoke about growing up in Orlando as an Asian American and answered questions from the standing room only audience, juxtaposed beneath painted portraits of predominantly old white male past presidents of Rollins College. “Life is not a track, it’s not a train or one highway.” Eddie said, when talking about his circuitous path from attorney to stand up comedian to Food Network contestant and now chef/owner of Baohaus, author, and media
personality. The child of Taiwanese immigrants, while growing up in Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill and one of the few faces of color in the community, he was often the target of racial taunts of “ching chong Eddie Huang” after baseball practices and was even called a chink on his first day at kindergarten. This incident, among others, made Eddie realize he was an outsider and often caused him to run into trouble with authorities. His life changed while at Rollins College studying Liberal Arts under the tutelage of professors who truly cared for him. He took classes such as acting, screen writing, and Chinese. Eddie said, “I went to school to train my mind, my soul, and to answer questions of ‘who am I?’”. “Don’t let occupation define you. What you

do says a lot about you, but who you are is not what you do,” Eddie advised during the talk. Always interested in social justice as well as rehabilitating his standing in society, he decided to pursue law for his graduate degree. After studying cases such as Bush V. Gore, he realized, “what drives decisions in this country is not rule of law, it’s politics and money.” “We have the power to vote with your money. If you support gay rights, don’t go to a Chic-Fil-A. If you don’t like what McDonald’s does to our food ecosystem, then don’t go to McDonald’s.” Eddie decided to go into the food because it was one of the few industries that Asian Americans weren’t questioned for excelling at. Having learned everything from his mother, he believes she is the best cook in Orlando.

In 2010, my friend Nina Yon introduced me to Andrea Eliscu. Nina told me that Andrea wanted to reach out to the Asian Community for a new dragon boat initiative she was spearheading, and that we were a perfect match. After just one brief meeting, I was convinced that Andrea’s passion would help grow this sport in our community.

The team’s latest goal is to compete in the Great White North International Festival in Toronto on September 6-8, 2013.
I had volunteered with the Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF) for years, and in 2005, we held the area’s first Dragon Boat Festival at Moss Park to educate our members about this 2,500-year-old tradition. For the festival, we had to tow two 40-foot dragon boats all the way from Miami as we had no dragon boat in Orlando at that time.
Without Andrea’s vision, contagious passion and perseverance, Orlando would not have the Walgreens International Dragon Boat Festival which last year alone, attracted 80 teams from 3 continents and 40,000 spectators to our community, all while raising more than $187,000 for MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando.
That is still not all. Andrea’s dream continues to grow. The Orlando Health Foundation’s latest focus is on developing a Corporate Team-building Dragon Boat Program to pave the path for future growth of the sport in Central Florida and even larger community dragon boat festivals in the future.
And without Andrea, there would also be no Dueling Dragons team, which pairs Orlando Police Department officers with local at-risk teens to paddle together for a cause. This unique team is the first of its kind in the sport and is literally making waves. Not only are they a force to be reckoned with on the water in competition, the relationships forged between the officers and kids

Close to 300 dragon boat paddlers around Florida came together to race at the Orlando Dragon Boat Challenge on March 23, 2013. Each team was entitled three races in one day while the top six teams (three from mixed division and three from senior division) competed in the utlimate challenge 2,000 meters race. Both TECO Tan Anou Team Red and Black from Tampa were placed the first and the second in the premier mixed division while the SunFire Renegades 追日者 from Orlando Dragon Club got the third place. Leathernecks, Silver Dragons and Black Sheep Marines Team divided the three medals in the senior division. Warriors on Water beat Dragon Sisters United in the women division. “Even we do not win, it is such a great experience for our team as we are preparing for two more races in Walgreens Cocoa Beach and Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat race in April. After all, it is about friendship and team work,” said C.K. Lau, the member of Team CHARGE.

MILLS 50, a non profit entity, is one of eight (8) Main Street Districts in the City of Orlando, striving to improve the awareness, aesthetics and viability of the District. The District boundaries are Summerlin to Bumby on Colonial and E. Amelia to Princeton on Mills and Mills to Haven on Virginia Drive. Mills 50 was officially recognized as a City of Orlando Main Street in the fall of 2008. This is the third year in a row that the Mills 50 Main Street District has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center®.

South Florida celebrated the Year of the Snake at Miami-Dade College Kendall Campus. This year’s grand festival marked the 25th Anniversary of Florida’s largest Chinese New Year Celebration organized and presented by the Chinese Cultural Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Chinese Cultural Association, Inc. Despite the coldest day of the year, over 5,000 visitors were able to satisfy their appetite for all things cultural by visiting over 70 vendors and exhibitors providing a variety ethnic foods, arts and crafts, commercial, health, and spiritual products. The large children’s play area provided a variety of games and rides. At precisely 12:20 p.m., the deep pounding

sounds of the drum, ganggu (缸鼓), heralded the arrival of the dragon and lion to begin the spectacular showcase of talent. The show was a solid 90-minutes of fast moving, high quality entertainment. Performers in colorful costumes presented traditional Chinese folk dances and music, plate spinning, jar juggling, skillful acrobatics, and the continuing crowd favorite, Matsuriza Taiko Drums. Crowd appreciation was high for the FIU Asian Student Union Association presention of their version of Gangnam Style. The Confucius Institute presented the show finale with a display of the elaborate national costumes of many of China’s ethnic minorities. A second show was presented at 3:30 p.m.
On hand to join the celebration and to wish the large crowd a happy and prosperous new year, was Director General Ray Mou representing TECO in Miami. In thanking the community for its support of the festival, Peter Liu, CCF President and Festival Chairman, stated that a portion of the proceeds from all tickets sold was being donated back to local charitable organizations. This year’s recipients were Save Our Sisters Dragon Boat Team to support breast cancer education; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; and Nanay, Inc. According to Mr. Liu, the festival has donated more than $50,000 to international, national, and local charities.

Asia Trend has supported the UCF ASA Scholarship Pageant since 2006. The Asian Student Association of UCF was the first to present an Asian American pageant on a Florida college campus. Having the opportunity to attend all these years is a wonderful experience. All the sixteen contestants in the competition shared the experience of blending the cultural heritage with the modern American life. I was impressed by the positive attitude surrounding the group and the supportive spirit among the contestants. To me, they were all the winners as they achieved the purpose of showcasing their proud heritages. Lantern Festival Cultural Celebration As the crowds jostled around the white-clad Chef, the onlookers stared hungrily at the clump of flour in front of them. Were they going to be able to eat soon? Looking at the swarm of hundreds of people around him, Chef Wang (王建 華) wiped away sweat from his brow and smiled. Then, he did what he has been doing for years – let the dough fly high! Soon enough, long noodles began to appear, and just in time too, as the smell of the sweet rice ball soup began beckoning people to another corner, and a new crowd piled in to watch the chef repeat his magic. With all the hustle and bustle, with different cultural activities taking place at the same time, no one would fault you if you thought that you

were in Asia for Lunar New Year. But it all happened Sunday afternoon, February 24th, right here in Orlando at Guang Ming Buddhist Temple (奧蘭多光明寺). The Lantern Festival, yuanxiao (元宵) traditionally celebrates the end of the Chinese New Year festivities, and is held on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar year. Dating back centuries, the festivities typically involve hoping for an auspicious year. In modern times, one of the largest festivals is held annually in Taiwan, with tens of thousands of people going to see huge lanterns, laser shows, fireworks, and a culmination of hundreds of lanterns floating into the night sky. Here in Central Florida, we may not have 30-

ton lantern centerpieces, but we are lucky to have in our backyard one of the largest traditional-Chinese style buildings in the Southeastern United States, and more fortunate to have it host educational and cultural events that are fun for all ages, young and old, Easterner and Westerner! In the dining room of Guang Ming Temple, chef Wang, from an award-winning restaurant, demonstrated his expertise in forming half-pulled Chinese noodles in the traditional-style, easily turning a ball of dough into long strings without any use of knives or tools! In the other corner of the dining hall, visitors could knead their own tang yuan (湯圓), a sweet and sticky rice-ball dessert, and, of course, taste their product!

In the main shrine, guests could listen to Chinese musical instruments – the erhu (二胡), guzheng (古箏), pipa (琵琶), duan di (短笛), and chang di (長笛) – being played by Mrs. Chen (楊 劍萍), a Shanghai Conservatory trained musician who has performed for President Carter! Guests could give their hands a try, but it appears years of practice makes a difference. On the other side of the temple in the tea room, guests savored drinks in traditional tea ceremonies by Vicky (呂秋鴻). Visitors could also have their names written with thick black brush strokes by a traditional Chinese calligraphy expert, Peter Lau (劉演達), and create the brain stimulating Chinese couplets 詩詞對聯 or take their turns at guessing the challenged riddles ( 猜燈謎)– a typical activity of the Lantern Festival.

From the mouth-watering food to the crafted lanterns, all activities were completely free thanks to dozens of hard-working volunteers and the generosity of Guang Ming Temple. The Lantern Festival is not a Buddhist holiday, but a cultural one popular throughout East Asia. Taiwanese community leader Paul Liau and Johnson Young organized a farewell dinner at Chan’s restaurant on March 30. More than twenty associations in Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Gainesville, and Melbourne sent their representatives to attend this farewell dinner to show the appreciation for Director Mou’s dedication to promoting businesses, preserving Taiwanese cultures and unifying the Taiwanese communities. A ‘Magic’ night for Asian Chamber The Asian American Chamber of Commerce was back at the Amway Center on Friday, March 1 to see the Orlando Magic take on the Houston Rockets. Members and friends of the Chamber came together for a pre-game reception at the 4th Floor Club Room at Jernigan’s to show their support for the hometown team as well as Asian NBA sensation Jeremy Lin of the Rockets. The Rockets No. 7 – whose full name is Jeremy Shu-How Lin – has been drawing fans from Asian communities across the country for
more than a year. In February 2012, Lin was the phenomenon behind a New York Knicks winning streak that was dubbed Linsanity by the media and fans. Last summer, Lin signed with the Rockets. Working with its AACC Dragon Corporate Partner, the Chamber was able to host the reception for 40+ fans, as well as offer friends of the Chamber special ticket packages to enjoy the game. Among the many who attended was community and business leader C.T. Hsu, who found a way to support both the Magic and Lin

The event, which was held at the Orlando Science Center, focused on discussing the topic of diversity in advertising and marketing. Sus-Hi was founded by two young local entrepreneurs Robert Ly and Teresa Uyen Chan that I’m thankful to call friends. I look forward to seeing their business grow. After panel member introductions and dinner, the panel was asked a variety of questions from the audience related to diversity in advertising and we shared our thoughts and perspectives. Each of the panel members had a diverse background and answered the questions through their unique lens, shaped by their culture and experiences. During the dialogue Shally Wong shared a story from her experiences that really illustrated the importance of understanding and appreciating diversity. Disney built and opened a Magic Kingdom park in Hong Kong. The park didn’t perform as well and the Disney team happaned to speak with Shally about the Chinese culture. She explained that many of the youth in Asia were not familiar with Mickey Mouse, or a variety of the other Disney Characters. The primary reason is that they had their own cartoon and anime characters that they grew up with which became part of their culture. In addition to this she mentioned that the Asian cultures place a very high value on education. Shally went on to say that she would not have advised for them to open up a Magic Kingdom park initially, but instead…Epcot. Epcot is a Disney park that celebrates diversity and gives visitors the opportunity to

take a peak into the various cultures around the world. This is my favorite Disney park and is especially enjoyable during their annual Food & Wine festival. I thought that Shally’s story was very powerful. No matter where we live, or what religion, ethnicity or culture we may be a part of… many of us have a desire to understand and experience other cultures. Gaining a glimpse of their unique food, customs, beliefs and way of life broadens our own knowledge and perception and helps us to understand, appreciate and celebrate diversity. This understanding and appreciation can also make us better marketers. In marketing and advertising it is essential to view the world through the eyes of who will be receiving your message. Put yourself in their shoes through research and gain an intimate and true understanding of them before marketing / advertising. There is a difference between brand identity and brand image. Brand Identity is how a brand sees themselves and brand image is how someone else views the brand. A brand may think that they are doing something for a good cause and are spot on with their messaging, but the perception of the person receiving the message may be completely different. A perfect example of this is the recent Sumsung commercials for their new Galaxy S
IV phone. Samsung received a lot of negative press and comments on social media related to their recent commercials and campaign. Though Samsung’s marketing team may view American women in this way, many American women don’t view themselves in this way and not only don’t identify with how they were represented, but were in many cases offended. In addition to thinking about brand identity and brand image, brands must also consider the difference between customer identity and customer image. We may perceive a prospect / customer in one way, but that may not necessarily be how the members of that specific audience perceive themselves. Shally’s example of opening a Magic Kingdom location in Hong Kong was another example of this. It’s easy to forget that if you show 5 people the same thing you may get 5 different reactions. We all see and interpret the world through our own lens. That lens, created from our education, culture, religion and experiences shapes our perception, thoughts and behaviors. This is what makes the world special and why we have such a diverse group of people, brands, products and experiences to appreciate. When people think of diversity they often think “cultural diversity”. Though this is one type of diversity, there are many others. We are all fundamentally different, but there are
certain common bonds that group us together with certain other people. This may be…. • common interests • religious belief • political view
• industry we work in
• ethnicity
• gender
• geographic location • common thoughts or goals • shared experiences or struggles • etc What’s interesting about this is that the things that make us similar to certain groups of people and bond us together also make us different to others from their perspective. Not to be cheesy, but diversity is the “spice of life” and keeps life interesting and entertaining. It enables us to have deeper bonds based on certain commonalities we have with people and gives us the opportunity to understand and appreciate the differences of others. After all, life would be very boring if we all thought, looked and acted the same as everyone else. As marketing and advertising professionals it is important for us to never forget to see the world not only from our perspective, but also from the view point of the customer we are seeking to reach and influence. It is also important to remember that at a high-level we all share certain common bonds and are all human. But, with that said, the more we seek to understand the differences and view points of the diverse customer prospects we are targeting the higher the likelihood that a creative asset, messaging and overall campaign will have success. Props to Joel Montilla for organizing the event and a shout out to my fellow panel experts and the audience. I was happy to be part of this wonderful event and enjoyed the experience.

The Tampa Chinese School, led by the principal Cheng Shih Hu and the Director of Public Relation Robert Chen organized a 20-minute cultural performance prior to the movie screening of a Taiwanese movie Din Tao on March 22. “GIFF has truly becoming an International Film Fest. The showcase of Asian Film this year has brought a new cornerstone for GIFF. You do not want to miss next year’s Asian Films!” said Robert Chen, Director of Public Relation of the Tampa Chinese School. The Gasparilla International Film Festival (GIFF), one of Tampa Bay’s largest independent film festivals, was established in the summer of 2006.GIFF is owned and operated by the Tampa Film Institute, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing film education and supporting filmmakers, as well as community involvement in film in the Tampa Bay area.

Sumo~Japan’s national sport (martial arts)~ Vol.3 相撲-日本の国技

In Japan, figurines of Sumo wrestlers have been unearthed dating back to between the third and seventh century, and the sport is mentioned in the myths and legends of the Kojiki and Nihonshoki (Japanese history books written in the eighth century). When it was time to plant rice, Sumo bouts were performed as a way to pray for a bountiful crop or to predict whether that year’s harvest would be good. In the Nara period (710794) and Heian period (794-1192), Sumo became an event conducted at the imperial court, and bouts were performed in front of the emperor. During the age of the Samurai, physical strength was an important skill for warriors, and Samurai families began to employ Sumo wrestlers. Professional Sumo is organized by the Japan Sumo Association. The members of the association, called Oyakata, are all former wrestlers, and are the only people entitled to train new wrestlers. All practicing wrestlers are members of a training stable (Heya) run by one of the Oyakata, who is the stablemaster for the wrestlers under him. Currently there are 47 training stables for about 660 wrestlers.

All Sumo wrestlers take wrestling names called Shikona (しこ名), which may or may not be related to their real names. Often wrestlers have little choice in their name, which is given to them by their trainer (stablemaster), or by a supporter or family member who encouraged them into the sport. A wrestler may change his wrestling name several times during his Sumo career. Sumo has six divisions. These divisions are Makuuchi, which can include forty-two wrestlers, Juryo, which can include twenty-eight wrestlers, Makushita, which includes one hundred and twenty members, Sandanme, which has two hundred wrestlers, Jonidan, which includes two hundred and thirty wrestlers, and Jonokuchi, which has eighty wrestlers. Each wrestler enters
the professional sport in the lowest division, which is Jonokuchi, and works his way up from division to division. The wrestlers who make up the highest two divisions are called Sekitori. The wrestlers of the lower divisions are called Rikishi. Sumo wrestling is a strict hierarchy based on sporting merit. The wrestlers are ranked according to a system that dates back hundreds of years, to the Edo period. Wrestlers are promoted or demoted according to their performance in six official tournaments held throughout the year. A carefully prepared Banzuke listing the full hierarchy is published two weeks prior to each sumo tournament. (…to be continued.)

14th Anniversary Celebration

Wah Lum North Orlando celebrated its 14th year of teaching traditional Chinese Kung Fu and Tai Chi on March 2nd with Grandmaster Pui Chan, students, instructors and friends. The school, located on S.R. 434 has been offering instruction in Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Yang-Style Tai Chi Chuan under the direction of Sifu George Kee since 1999. Wah Lum North Orlando is one the fifteen schools qualified under the Wah Lum Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu system established by Grandmaster Pui Chan in the United States. The celebration included Kung Fu weapons seminars for students, demonstrations by Sifu George, and a delicious traditional Chinese lunch.
Grandmaster Pui Chan honored Sifu George and the school of its success with a crystal award. Other special guests included Sifus from Grandmaster Chan’s Wah Lum Temple as well as the Wah Lum School in Tampa and Melbourne.
