The festivities begin on the first day of the first lunar month of the New Year and last for 15 days. Lunar New Year 4708, which falls on February 14 this year, is the most important festival among Chinese (as Spring Festival), Vietnamese (as Tet Festival) and Korean (as Solnal). It is the time for renewal, family gatherings, eating rich foods and paying respect to your ancestors and elders. Also, what you do and how you act during the period is crucial in determining how the rest of your year will go. So, eating the right foods, dressing the new clothes, saying the blessing words all symbolize the prosperous year to come.

Zodiac Forecast for Year of the Tiger
What’s up for the Year of Golden Tiger? Cosmic changes alter the flow of energy to living beings at all times. Shanghai
Says it All
By Luxury Concierge China
I am standing on the terrace of the Shanghai Peninsula Hotel on its first ‘pre-opening’ day. Directly in front of me the Huangpu River rolls and bends, causing the numerous barges and container vessels to steer a gentle curve around Pudong Point. A cooling autumnal breeze provides whispy clouds and a blue sky. Across the river the steel and glass new buildings dominate a skyline I can almost touch. Here on the old concession part of town the neo-classical and art deco structures fill each small piece of land spreading into the western sunset. I feel as if I have arrived in one of the most exciting destinations on the planet. Up until about a decade ago Shanghai was no one’s choice for luxury travel. Sure, see China they said, and make sure you stay in Beijing long enough to sample some culture, then catch some shopping and fine dining in Hong Kong. Shanghai, if it was visited at all, was the domain of businesspeople. The city of before, of pre-War, of pre-revolution, had been lost forever. My… Were they ever wrong! The ambition and creativity of not only those businesspeople, but also the flexibility and hard work of the city’s 25million Chinese inhabitants, has created a Shanghai that is in a lot of ways a repeat of the lush decadence of the 1930s. Now, just as then, Shanghai seems immune to international financial wobbles, and continues to build the finest in hotels, restaurants and other top-end destinations. All feature the

mix that makes Shanghai great: Chinese touches on a cosmopolitan nature that is the blood and heritage of the Shanghainese. Appropriately, a Shanghai holiday begins in one of the city’s finest hotels. The Park Hyatt is celebrating its first year anniversary. The highest hotel in the world remains a unique temple to modern Japanese-inspired interior design, achieving that envious mix of exoticism and comfort. Meanwhile, the best-trained staff members in town seemlessly guide you from spa to pool to enticing dining options. However if it is a gilded art deco re-mix you crave, then the Peninsula should be your choice. The sprawling property is the first new building on the famous Bund waterfront in 62years, and it bleeds luxury from each of its individually designed public and private rooms. Many terraces on different levels give one the option of being a part of the landscape, or standing above it all. Of course it should be said that Shanghai’s up-market re-birth was the opening of M on the Bund in 1999. Constantly in tune with the city, half of the nightly clientelle live in Shanghai. Consistency and never-ending improvement are their mantras, and this commitment to quality is readily
apparent. The same goes for M on the Bund’s posh drinks destination, the Glamour Bar. There, commitment to excellence means cutting edge entertainment, from music to cabaret to literary festivals. The Bund houses three other must-do destinations on your top-notch tour through the city. The first is the new Mr. and Ms. Bund, a creation of traditional and inspirational French fine fare and wine. Just upstairs is Bar Rouge, the bar rumoured to have sold the most champagne on the planet in 2006. Both are housed in Bund 18, one of the first old banking houses on the waterfront to be renovated. The opulent interior is a mix of smoothly textured carrera marble, lit with red morano glass fixtures. Another pioneer in Shanghai’s dining renaissance is the consistently excellent Whampoa Club, housed in another finely renovated structure, 3 on the Bund. Whampoa Club stands out as the best mixture of mild and seafood-centric Cantonese food with a distinctively innovative Shanghai flair. Similar to other venues in the city, the fashionable interior pays respect to Shanghai’s 1930s moderne past. In Shanghai it pays to temper one’s culinary indulgences with some sightseeing. The French Concession district, in the south-central section of the metropolis, is several square kilometres of plane-tree lined streets of fine residential architecture. Thus it is the perfect antidote to the wow / over-the-top feel of the Bund. This postage

Travel stamp-sized piece of formerly French-controlled land on the China coast was home to most of the influential pre-WW2 figures in China, from politicians, to gangsters to literary figures. Today one also finds the start of a new commercial culture in the French Concession. The first of these new neighbourhoods of note is Xintiandi, an up-market creation of international talent and big finance, which was completed in 2001. Come to Xintiandi for a very comfortable take on old Shanghai: original residential buildings refitted as top-end shops and restaurants. Its success has made it an urban development model for all of China, where shopping and dining used to mean huge, energy inefficient megamalls. One of the finest restaurants in Xintiandi is T8, which prides itself on offering the freshest takes on an international melange of food choices. The pan-Asian interior is comforting as well as contemporary. Nearby Xintiandi lies Art Salon, a unique restaurant concept where two brothers – an artist and a chef – have teamed up to turn their modest former home into a place for art display and the best traditional Shanghainese food in town. In the western part of the French Concession there are two other areas that should not be missed. The first is Tianzifang, an ever-growing bohemian village of shops and restaurants. Unlike Xintiandi with its larger restaurants and piazza-style spaces, Tianzifang has sprung up organically amidst an un-renovated residential community. Thus rental prices are low enough to allow the really creative to try their hand at entrepreneurship. Expect to find Shanghai’s most interesting shopping here, especially if you prefer straying from the safety of internationally available products. Further to the west is Furgusson Lane, home to Franck, one of the most-loved bistrostyled restaurants in the city. The streets around Furgusson Lane are still largely untouched and residential, giving an authentically romantic feel to your post-prandial constitutional stroll. Shanghai, clearly, has transformed itself into a serious player in the game of luxury provision. Relax, and let yourself enjoy its offerings. Surely these ones featured above will be here, as well as many more that are planned in the run-up to the city’s international Expo in 2010. What Every Asian
American
Should Know About
Chronic Hepatitis B
One of the greatest health disparities between Asian Americans and Caucasian Americans is the increased number of people with chronic hepatitis B and liver cancer in the Asian community. One in 10 Asian Americans is infected with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) compared to 1 in 1,000 Caucasian Americans.1 The staggering fact is that most people infected with the virus do not even know it because it is a “silent infection,” meaning that most people do not have noticeable symptoms. There are an estimated 350 million people worldwide infected with HBV and up to 1.4 million in the U.S.2 More than half of those infected in the U.S. are Asians or Pacific Islanders.3 Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. Chronic hepatitis B differs from acute hepatitis B because it is a long-term infection. It can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer, and can lead to premature death. There is no cure, but if the virus is found early enough, treatment is available to slow the progression of the disease. HBV is spread through: mother to child, direct contact with blood, and sexual contact. The majority of Asian Americans commonly become infected from a chronically infected mother during birth. Transmission occurs through blood, semen, or other body fluids infected with the virus. There are certain parts of Asia, the Pacific Islands, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and areas of South America where hepatitis B is common. Therefore, chronic carriers from these areas can unknowingly spread the disease to others, including household members. HBV can also be spread by sharing household items (such as toothbrushes, nail clippers, or razors) or needles that may be contaminated with blood and through
14 Jan 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
direct wound-to-wound contact. HBV is not transmitted through food or water, sharing eating utensils, breastfeeding, hugging, kissing, holding hands, coughing, or sneezing. Chronic carriers should not be excluded from work, school, or any other daily activities. There is no reason to distance yourself from those infected with HBV, but take precautions to prevent exposures to blood and sexual fluids.
aware of this disease because it affects Asians so disproportionately. To raise awareness of HBV, the Orange County Health Department is providing information and education through community presentations and consultations. If you are interested in learning more about the disease, or are an organization willing to host a 30 minute presentation, please contact Jessica Fung at Jessica_fung@doh.state.fl.us or 407-858-1400 X 1351.
Most people who have HBV have no symptoms and can feel healthy, that is why it is so important to get tested. Routine blood work does not test for HBV. It must be specifically requested. Since most people have no symptoms and can unknowingly pass the disease to others, screening for the virus can prevent the spread to loved ones. When symptoms do occur, often the disease has already damaged the liver and it is too late for treatment to be effective. A blood test will help determine whether or not a person is chronically infected or needs vaccination. Get tested to know your status. Knowing your status can help you start living healthier to protect your liver. You can slow the progression of the virus to prevent cirrhosis and liver cancer, and you can protect your family and friends by taking precautions with bodily fluids and making sure they are vaccinated. Ask your doctor for a blood test. If you do not have a regular doctor, the Orange County Health Department offers free screening and hepatitis vaccinations for persons at risk for infection. Look for details about the Orange County Health Department hepatitis programs and information on vaccinations in upcoming articles.

CHUA A NAN: BUILDING A TEMPLE Tucked unobtrusively into a parcel of land on 2120 SE 15th Street in Gainesville is a small white gazebo of a type that used to be ubiquitous in the back yards of Middle America. On SE 15th Street, the gazebo is not used as a quaint backyard whimsy but for quite an unexpected purpose: The gazebo is a Buddhist temple, or, in Vietnamese, a chua. In the Chua A Nan/A Nan Temple’s makeshift shrine sit statues of Buddha and the bodhisattva Quan Yin. Smoke from fragrant incense sticks wafts through the gazebo’s screened walls and across the lowlands that will eventually house a pagoda, a multi-purpose building known as a hau lieu, a library, and a monks’ quarters. In its formative stages, the A Nan Temple has land, the gazebo, and a monk. Thay Duc Thong, the monk, will one day come to live on this parcel of Gainesville land; he is young and relatively new to America and he radiates a quiet philosophical strength and purpose. Until the living quarters are built, Thay Duc Thong comes to Gainesville for the major ceremonies. Late each Sunday afternoon, the Buddhists of the A Nan Temple gather for quiet worship on their 8.75-acre parcel of land. The afternoon light is low as they practice their devotion. As the autumnal sun begins to set, they share a potluck meal and show the visitor where the 2500-square foot temple will stand and where the Buddhist garden and pond with lily pads will be. This is the typical lowlands of Northern Florida, where pine

trees rise above palm. The remaining acreage contains what will eventually be landscaped lowlands as well as designated wetlands. The A Nan Temple purchased the land in June, 2008. The first task was to clear the acreage that was not wetlands. The 20-person group undertook ad hoc fundraising efforts, largely through the local Vietnamese community. They raised $25,000 of the $250,000 they will eventually need for the initial construction. With the land cleared, they applied for site-plan approval and began to look ahead. Trang Le, one of the group’s spokespersons, says that the project will take over a decade to complete. She stresses the importance of having a local temple and mentions the age of the core group. Many members of the group are elderly; some members have already passed away. Since there were no Buddhist temples in the Gainesville area, people had to travel to Jacksonville and Orlando to worship, and this was too far for the elderly to go each week. Ms. Le says that the group “wanted to have this (temple) for a long time.” She has been in Gainesville since 1975 and adds, “Now we get old and we don’t want to travel.” But Ms. Le, who is in her early fifties, is almost half the age of the group’s oldest member, 96-year-old Huyen Nguyen. Ms. Le speaks of someone who has passed away, but who had seen the beginnings of the temple project. “Now she can die peacefully, knowing that we will start.” They started in 2005, by searching for a suit-

able parcel of land and looking for sources of funding. One site was too expensive and another didn’t work out. On their third try, they found the land on SE 15th Street, but the three acres that were not wetlands had to be cleared before they could put the land to use. They have been busy; there are four major ceremonies and festivals to plan, besides working out the structural details of the buildings and seeking sources of funding. The first building will be the hau lieu. The hau lieu will provide the group’s first permanent shelter and will be used for worship until the pagoda is built. It will also have bathroom facilities and a kitchen, neither of which the group has access to at the present. The library/classroom building is where instruction in the Vietnamese language will occur so that the children of the community may learn and preserve their native tongue. Bruce Stewart, who is the temple’s English-language liaison, mentions that the pagoda-style design of the temple building is similar to the Hall of the Mandarins in Hue, Vietnam. The design creates another, more concrete, link to the homeland. The people who worship at the temple are proud of their status as Americans, but they also recognize the importance of maintaining their Vietnamese identity. That they succeed in blending the two disparate cultures becomes publicly evident when they march in the opening procession of a local festival, wearing traditional Vietnamese dress and carrying small American flags. Until the first building can be constructed,

children are not routinely brought to the land because of mosquitoes. They did come, however, for the Tet Trung Thu, a mid-autumn festival for children that took place in early October. At the festivals and ceremonies, the population grows from the core group of 20 to three or more times as much. Over the course of the year, the A Nan Temple will also celebrate Tet (Vietnamese New Year), Phat Dan (Buddha’s birthday), Vu-lan (analogous to Mother’s Day in the United States); and Ha Nguon (an end-of-year festival). The group is committed to their plan, even as it is, in Mr. Stewart’s words, a “grassroots effort.” It isn’t hard to visualize how the site will appear once the project is completed. The temple will be the focal point, at the rear of the three acres. The buildings will be laid out in a square, with the more functionally designed living quarters and library/classroom building adjacent to the pagoda and the hau lieu opposite it. The Buddhist garden with its pond will be to the back of the living quarters. The view into the wetlands is a dynamic, humid-subtropical one. Birds stir the vegetation, and if the entrance on SE 15th Street is discounted, there is a sense of restful
isolation that perfectly suits the temple’s meditative purpose. The A Nan group seems unruffled about the scope of the project ahead. They know it will take time and effort, and they know it will not happen overnight. And if this is all they have, this land with its gazebo, then that too will be fine, says Bach Lien Duong. “After all, Buddha spent the night under a tree.” She gestures to the native vegetation ringing the site and smiles. “We have enough now.” Chua A Nan is open to all and is a 501 (c) (3) organization. Florida Asian Leadership Holds Summit in Orlando A planned Florida Asian Summit in Orlando marks the beginning of 2010 and promises to be a historic event for the widely diverse AsianAmerican communities in the State of Florida. On January 16-17, 2010, Asian American community leaders across the State will meet at Orlando Marriott Downtown - 400 W Livingston Street - to finalize their strategic plans for outreaching the hard-to-count Asian population in Florida in preparation for the upcoming 2010 Census. “We need to ensure that Asian Americans get their fair share of resources by achieving a full count in Census 2010”, says Dr. Joy Bruce, President of the Asian American Federation of Florida, a statewide organization made up of more than 70 Bangladesh, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Iranian, Korean, Laotian, Taiwanese, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese communitybased organizations, businesses and media. “We are joining hands in true partnership to discuss ways of empowering their community and achiev-
ing an accurate complete Census count of Asian Americans throughout the State of Florida.” Census data is used to plan for the needs of the community which includes the planning and funding for education & School, health care & hospitals, poverty assistance programs, transportation projects, housing programs, public safety strategies, and much more. Over 170 federal programs use census population data to determine the range and level of funding available to local governments. The Census 2010 questionnaire is the shortest form in US census history which dates back to 1790, according to Winnie Tang, US Census Partnership Specialist and Team Leader of Florida Asian Community Team. “With just 10 questions, the form should only take 10 minutes to complete; but it will make a difference in decision making at all levels of government for the next ten years and for the Asian community.” The completed Census questionnaire is confi-
dential and protected by law. Census employees cannot share Census information with anyone including the President or other government agencies, and they are subject to a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison for disclosing personal information. As part of the two-day 2010 Asian Summit, Bank of America and Florida Prosperity Partnership will also give a “Train the Trainer” workshop so that Asian American communities in Florida may attain financial stability, promote prosperity and develop asset building strategies. In addition, the ethnically diverse Asian American leadership will also discuss common issues that affect their communities, including immigration, health care reform and labor discrimination. The sleeping giant is finally waking up. Contact: Dr. Joy Bruce (305) 951-5552 joybruce@aol.com

Shen Yun is back Shen Yun Performing Arts returns to Florida, January 26-31, 2009, playing at Broward Center for Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, Progress Energy Center for the Arts-Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and TimesUnion Center for the Arts in Jacksonville as part of 2010 Global Tour. New York-based Shen Yun is a group of leading Chinese artists who came together with a vision of reviving the best of traditional Chinese performing arts and bringing it to audiences around the world. Shen Yun has become known worldwide for its flawlessly choreographed Chinese classical dance, the centerpiece of its shows and an integral part of China’s ancient culture. Richard Connema, a veteran theater critic with Talkin’ Broadway magazine, gave the show five stars. “The dancers were absolutely fantastic. I found out that there was not only dancing in this but heart. You could feel that coming even from where I was sitting … Just a beautiful production,” he said. “I found that those backdrop scenes and the way it was projected and the way it comes out is absolutely fantastic.” Connema was referring to Shen Yun’s innovative animated backdrops—something entirely unique in the world of theater. Each Shen Yun dance performance carries a story. Ancient legends of heroism and folklore as well as modern tales of courage are integral to Shen Yun. Since making its debut on Broadway in 2006, Shen Yun has expanded to three companies, each with its own full orchestra. During the 2009 touring season the show played in over 100 cities on five continents.

Story-Based Dance is one of Shen Yun’s trademarks
“I saw the real dances tonight at last! …if they performed ‘Swan Lake,’ we would actually see flying swans!” says Brissonskaja, world renowned ballet dancer. Chinese dance is a stunningly expressive art form that dates back over 5,000 years of the Chinese divinely inspired cultures. Shen Yun brings this rich heritage vividly to life, premiering multitude of dances and all-new show every year. Classical Chinese Dance Perhaps no other art form in the world boasts such strong expressive qualities and diversity of technique as this dance heritage. It is particularly abundant in its vocabulary – it is the cultural substance behind that imbues a dancer’s movements with rich expressive power, which is capable of depicting all forms of beings, emotional expression, and even the very context of an entire age. Featuring the roar of thunderous drums from a remote age, or the elegance of the ladies of the Tang Imperial Court dancing with the flowing silken sleeves, Shen Yun’s classic Chinese dance transports audiences back in time. Folk & Ethnic Dance is also an integral part of Shen Yun show From past Shen Yun shows, you might witness the colorful and distinctive folk and ethnic dances, which invite you to go herding on the Mongolian plains, to celebrate the joys of the vibrant Tibetan people living by snow-capped mountains, or immerse yourself amidst stunning

These dances give dramatic portrayal to the cherished stories of past and present. Their figures embody the most exalted virtues of Chinese civilization, and convey a message or moral that is still relevant in our day. Many have inspired people for generations, such as the tales of heroine Mulan and general Yue Fei. Others quietly lead lives of great courage today that are sure to move and inspire. U.S. retailer Abercrombie & Fitch
opens 1st Asian store in Tokyo One of the most popular American apparel brands “Abercrombie & Fitch” opened its first Asian flagship store in central Tokyo on December 15, 2009. Its 12-story building is located in the Ginza district, once the heartland of top luxury brands but now dominated by fast-fashion brands. Abercrombie (an Ohio-based luxury casual brand) promises to deliver the same ‘‘all-American’’ experience—including the buff, shirtless ‘‘store models’’—found at its four other flagship stores in New York, Los Angeles, London and Milan.

What: Abercrombie & Fitch Tokyo Where: Ginza Address: 6-9-10 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo Nearest Train Station: Ginza Station Hours: 11:00 – 21:00
Long lines of over 700 people snaked around the Tokyo store as the doors were opened by international store models, clad in their signature red and blue-checkered shirts, with their cheery “Hi Guys” greetings in English. Their merchandise is a bit pricey over there – $80 polo shirt. Let’s see if the A&F fashion emphasizing the sculpted bodily beauty of the Greek and Roman times will be embraced in present-day Japan…

Asian American Student Achievers’ Gala By Alexander Tran
What does it take to be an Asian American Student Achiever? You can find the answer from many of our community leaders, students and parents from the Asian American Student Achievers’ Gala which is held annually in November during which monetary grants and certificates of recognitions are distributed to deserving Asian American students from elementary school to college freshman. Thanks to the Asian American Heritage Council of Central Florida for putting together such a nice program to provide an opportunity for us to meet other Asian students, to be inspired by our community leaders and to be acknowledged for our achievements in the Asian American Community. As the repeat winner of the AAHC Asian American Student Achiever Scholarship Award, I have talked to other award recipients and found that the keys to our success are hard work, determination and supportive parents. To be achievers, we are more self disciplined than many of our fellow classmates. We limit ourselves on the time spend on entertainment and always put homework and project as our priority. We work hard, aim high and we know the importance to achieve academic excellence for our future success. We are not afraid to be challenged and we always take the higher level classes when they

are available. Asian American Student achievers are also very determined. Besides academic achievement, we are also serious about our extra curricular activities. Whether it is music, art or sports, we are always determined to try our best. It may be hard to invest a lot of time in practice but it is totally worth it as you can develop to be more well-rounded students. The time we spent on these activities also provide us a chance to mingle with our peers and have fun. However, it is important to choose an activity that you truly enjoy. It is perfectly fine to think out of the box. My 15 year old sister chose pageants and modeling as her extra curricular activities which are not very common in Asian families. Although she has to travel extensively and may need to work during weekdays, she just brings her books everywhere and does her homework backstage while she is having her hair and make up done by the professionals. She has been able to maintain straight A ,served as the student president at her middle school, walk on the runway and be on the cover of a national magazine all at the same time. As a competitive swimmer and swimming team captain, I practice six days a week and it helps me to build a strong body, a clear mind and leadership skills. Besides, it is also important to be involved in our community and volunteer our time and tal-

ent. Together with my sister and teen peers, we had founded a non-profit organization “Teens Go Green” with a mission to raise public awareness to protect our environment. We also reach out to other non-profit organization like “Give Kids the World” and “American Cancer Society” to help and raise funds for them while we spread our “go green” message. Within our Asian Community, we help to design game booths at the mid-autumn festivals to raise funds for Orlando Chinese School. To most of us, parental supports are also very essential for our success. Most Asian parents realized the importance of education for their children, and they always make it their top priority. When we were in elementary and middle school, our parents were very involved in our school regardless if it was school parties, field trips or just homework and projects. Our parents are always there to provide guidance and helped us to build a solid foundation on our education. Even though we had much stricter upbringing than most of our classmates in early childhood and we may complained about it, as we grow older, we now realized how our parents’ approach had contributed to our success. At the same time, there are reports about Asian parents sometimes pressure too much to force their kids in one direction and emphasize too much on success than

effort. However, it is important for us as students to communicate with our parents. We should embrace our Asian culture while we get the best from the American culture which promotes creativity, independence and emotional development. We are very fortunate and proud to be Asian American and together we can achieve more. I would like to express my sincere thanks to The Asian American Heritage Council of Central Florida and its partnering organizations, judges, corporate sponsors, community sponsors, media sponsors and entertainers for this special evening. Hopefully we can continue the mission to preserve the culture and heritage of Asians while we advance ourselves in civic, educational and social interest in our American community to be the future Asian American leaders! Alexander Tran, is a 16 year old high school junior at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Florida. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the team captain of his high school swimming team. Alex is also the co-founder and vice president of a non-profit organization “Teens Go Green” with a mission to raise public awareness to protect our environment. Besides the academic challenge from the IB program, Alexander further challenged himself by participating in different college programs including the law summit in Stanford University and the medical forum in Boston. Alexander is determined to be an achiever and a role model for our fellow Asian American students.
