The Asian population increased more than four times faster than the total U.S. population. According to the 2010 Census, the Asian population grew by 46.5%, faster than any other race group in the United States between 2000 and 2010. The 2010 Census reported 308.7 million people in the United States, a 9.7 percent increase from the Census 2000 population of 281.4 million. Of the total, 17.3 million, or 5.6%, people reported they were of Asian descent. This count included those who said they were both Asian alone (14.7 million) and Asian in combination with one or more additional races (2.6 million or 15%), of which well over half reported being Asian and White.

Asian American Night at the Amway Center On March 5, 2014, the Orlando Magic hosted Asian American Night at the Amway Center when the Magic played the Houston Rockets. The Asian Community was well represented by Jeremy Lin of the Rockets. Jimmy Missouri, Account Executive with the Orlando Magic played a big part in coordinating this event along with the Asian Ameri-
can Chamber of Commerce and Asia Trend Magazine thru promotion to AACC Members and the Asian Community in Central Florida. Indonesia Mapalus Kawanua Florida Anniversary Picnic The weather was perfect and Indonesian people were well represented 15 March 2014 at the Mapalus Kawanua Florida, MKF, first anniversary picnic at Wickham Park Melbourne. Hundreds of people from as near as Fort Meyers, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and West Palm Beach, and as far as California, Colorado, New York, and New Hampshire celebrated Indonesian Minahasa culture as they enjoyed food, music, and performances. It was day to make new friends, as well as to raise awareness and funds to help volcano and flood victims in North Sumatra, East Java, and North Sulawesi. The event was sponsored by Mapalus

Kawanua Florida which loosely translated means “Community of people from the hometown of Manado, Indonesia, living in Florida”. But there was also the desire to draw all people together to share in culture and friendship with Indonesians who can be diverse yet have much in common. “Unity in Diversity” is the official national motto of this island nation, the world’s fourth most populous country, and it was apparent in the friendship displayed by those who were there. Activities opened with a prayer and singing of a traditional Manado song, Opo Wana Natas, by those gathered. After remarks by MKF Chairman Charles Tumetel, the entertainment
began with Wyn Praniti Mello performing a Balinese social dance, “Joged Bungbung”, with audience participation! Dwi Santoso next led an angklung group in playing some traditional and contemporary songs including America the Beautiful. During lunch guests ate spicy Manado cuisine and listened to Kolingtang music. There was also Potong Tumpeng, which is a rice dish shaped to resemble a volcano (which play a large part in the culture since Indonesia has 147 of them). Tumpeng dates back to ancient traditions related to giving thanks for an abundant harvest or other blessings. MKF board members ceremoniously cut the tip off the cone.

Vocalist Rey Graham smooth singing kept the crowd clapping. Fannie Kainde led partners to dance the Polonaise, a type of European influenced polka performed at weddings and other social events. There was the mandatory line dance “Poco-Poco” which originated in Indonesia but has also spread throughout Asia. Not everything was old school tradition as Jeany Sugito lead rousing Zumba dance routines to get everyone’s blood flowing after eating too much. It shouldn’t be surprising to see the Asian influence in Central Florida considering that between 2000 and 2010 the Asian population has grown four times faster than the total U.S. population growth in the same period, and Florida is one of the ten states where nearly three-fourths of all Asians in the U.S. live. While Indonesia is only the 15th largest group of Asian Americans in the U.S., they are now well represented in central Florida with several organizations focused on serving their community such as Brevard Angklung and Dance group, City Blessings Ministry (CBM), Indonesian American Women Association Florida chapter, (IAWA), Mapalus Kawanua Florida, (MKF), and new groups forming. Wah Lum Kung Fu Day To martial arts practitioners around the world, Grandmaster Chan Pui is known for many things, such as being sixth generation of the Wah Lum Kung Fu System, 33rd generation disciple of the Shaolin Temple, and being a pioneer in traditional martial arts in the United States. To his students, Grandmaster Chan is known for his dedication to his system, pride in his students, enthusiasm in training and teaching, and sincere respect for martial artists. Those who know Grandmaster Chan know him to be a powerful practitioner, an astounding performer, an honorable man, and a true friend. Grandmaster Chan was the first to begin celebrating the Lunar New Year (Chinese

New Year) in Central Florida in 1980. He is a pioneer in educating the community, sharing the tradition, and promoting Lion and Dragon Dancing as well as kung fu performances in Central Florida. He has been celebrating and keeping the tradition alive for 34 years in Orlando, but over 40 years in the United States. Dragon Parade Lunar New Year committee requested a proclamation presented by City of Orlando Major Buddy Dyer to Master Pui Chan and proclaimed February 9, 2014 as “Wah Lum Kung Fu Day”. It was a warm and touching feel-

Tzu Chi Orlando 2013 Year End Blessing Ceremony Tzu Chi liaison office in Orlando’s Year End Blessing Ceremony was held at the L. Claudia Allen Senior Center. It was enthusiastically attended by nearly two hundred people, many of whom are overseas Chinese in Central Florida. This annual event provides members and guests the opportunity to see, via DVD Tzu Chi’s footsteps of Great Love and Kindness throughout the world. In addition they receive the blessings and warm wishes from the Founder of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Dharma Master Cheng Yen. The dinner for this year’s event was sponsored by Panda Express. In addition to the dis-

trict manager, 10 field service managers from the Central Florida Region served the attending guests to a delicious meal. After the meal the district manager shared the fact that the company founder, a Tzu Chi member, believes in giving back to the community, and that he is instilling this belief in Panda Express. The managers, who were unable to participate in the entire event left to hearty applause from the audience. The video sharing of Tzu Chi relief work in the year 2013 around the world included, as well as community care and involvement the Orlando Tzu Chi Office, sponsored activities such as visits
to the Tacachale State Institution, Veg Fest and Central Florida Earth day to promote recycling and vegetarianism. At the end of the evening there was a lighting of everyone’s heart light. As everyone lit up their lotus lamps they prayed for a peaceful world without natural and man-made disasters and the wisdom bring this to fruition. C.K. Repainting Project Mills 50 solicited donations from businesses and residents to fund the repainting of five “art boxes”, after the City of Orlando replaced them with new utility cabinets. The cherry blossom, or sakura, is Japan’s unofficial national flower and there are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan. However, the cherry blossom season is relatively short and most varieties of cherry tree only blossom for a few weeks at most in spring. From late March to early April, sakura go into full bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (“sakurazensen”) is announced each year by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. As the full-bloom period is short, the announcements are waited on by the media and all eager party planners.

Ending the Lunar New Year with Historical San Francisco Parade At precisely 5 p.m. on February 15, San Francisco locals and visitors alike excitedly pressed up against the metal, grill fences that were all lined up along the parade route, ready to end the Lunar Year celebrations with a loud and lengthy bang. All were ready for the explosive display of marching bands, mardi-gras-esque floats, lion dancers, and the ever-impressive, 29-segment
long Golden Dragon. This particular parade, with its origins in the 1860s, is now one of the largest Chinese New Year parades outside of Asia, and certainly one of the grandest. Performers included school groups of little horse dancers and students of various intensive martial arts schools, as well as local politicians, many of Asian descent.

Puff - one of the strongest teams in South Florida Puff is a competitive dragon boat team based in Miami since 2003. This team has seen a steady rise over recent years, and through ongoing hard work and perseverance, is now the reigning champion in both women’s and mixed divisions at the prestigious Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival, among other events. Puff had 9 members on the latest incarnation of dragon boat’s Team USA at the IDBF World Championships in Hungary last year. Their members have ranged in age from 14 to 74, with most in the 30-50 range. They come from all walks of life, including doctors, lawyers, teachers/professors, massage therapists, students, park rangers, IT professionals, law enforcement, small business owners, just to name a few. They are racially and ethnically diverse, and have roots from all over the Americas as well as China, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, France, Hungary, and more. Though their diversity implies differing interests, the team brings new strong friendships, and they enjoy various social activities together. But ultimately it’s the magic on the boat that keeps them coming back for more. With so many of their members traveling the world for dragon boat events, whether it’s the annual Hong Kong race season, nations’ world championships, club crew world championships,

or various other events, they have made very special connections across the country and the world. This network is one of the great aspects of the sport; the worldwide friendships that remain after beating each other up on the water. If they travel to places where the sport is active, domestically or internationally, there’s a good chance they have some connection to a group and can go paddle with some new friends. The Florida race calendar is extensive. The Tampa International in April and Orlando International in October are the two big ones that all of the top competitors from Florida and beyond gravitate to, and now Puff has championships to defend. In addition, the South Florida Dragon Boat Festival in Miami, and a series of races on 10-person boats called Synergy in Deerfield Beach, are typically on the calendar. They try to travel outside the state for one race per year or so, and this year they are shooting for the Great White North Sport Regatta in Toronto in July. Many Puff members are also involved in a Florida all-star team called Tarpons, which will be going to the Club Crew World Championships in Ravenna, Italy in September.

Bali, an island province of Indonesia, is the essence of a tropical paradise, renowned for its traditional dance, music, artwork, and enviable beaches for surfing.
From its volcanic mountains to rice paddies, Bali is a very spiritual place full of natural wonders. Here in Bali the majority of the citizens adhere to Balinese Hinduism, rich with thousands of years of traditions and rituals. Sculptures, statues, and even trees are dressed with sarongs as the Balinese believe there are spirits within all things. The black-andwhite plaid clothes symbolize the duality in life, such as good and evil, brightness and darkness, as well as men and women. Every morning, the Balinese prepare “Canang Sari,” using coconut leaves to create a square basket and filled with fragrant incense, candies, rice, beautiful flowers, betel leaves, and other offerings to appease the spirits of Bali, Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (the “All-In-One God”). They are placed on tables, car dashboards, and on the streets in front of homes and businesses as well as gates and corners…essentially every where. These offerings are made three times a day to express thanks to the gods and spirits.

Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, features a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) and gongs, bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings. Balinese performing arts often portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy local Balinese influence.

scammed. Inside Bali, the largest money changer is called PT Central Kuta and they have several outlets. - Getting around Bali - Hire a driver for about $50 USD a day to take you around. The streets of Bali are very narrow and hazardous for those unaccustomed to driving in crowded streets where motorcyclists, cars, vans, all pile on in almost one lane driving conditions. It’s best to hire a driver to avoid the hassles. Traffic can be quite irritating especially near the tourist centers. - Rainy Seasons - Do try to avoid the rainy season as Bali is a tropical island. From December to March, the west monsoon can bring heavy showers and high humidity. From June to September, the humidity is low and it can be quite cool in the evenings, with hardly any rain. - Kuta Beach is known for surfing and tourist centers, Nusa Dua is known for their resort villas, and Ubud, the spiritual center of Bali, for their arts, temples, the Sacred Monkey forest, and rice terraces. - Nyepi, or the Hindu New Year, also known as the day of absolute silence, is usually in March or April (next on March 31, 2014). On Nyepi,
absolutely everything on the island is shut down between 6AM on the day of the new year and 6AM the following morning. Tourists are confined to their hotels and asked to be as quiet as possible for the day. After dark, light must be kept to a bare minimum. No one is allowed onto the beaches or streets. The only exceptions granted are for real emergency cases. The airport remains closed for the entire day, which means no flights into or out of Bali for 24 hr. The Balinese believe by being absolutely silent, evil spirits will pass over the island and not linger and do harm to the inhabitants. - Massages in Bali are relatively cheap and can range from USD $12 an hour for a massage.
