Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan: Local Profiles in Community and Leadership When Patty Sheehan, encouraged by friends, ran for Orlando City Council the first time in 1996, she narrowly missed a run off by 75 votes.
Street program. And I absolutely adore our Lake Eola swans and supported a program to provide them with proper nutrition and veterinary care. The most difficult thing I work on is sidewalks. There is a reason we are among the top pedestrian fatality cities in America. People freak out whenever we install sidewalks. But it is a safety issue, and we must allow people to walk through our city safely.
As the late Betty Carter (former Supervisor of Elections) told her, “The only thing that gets politics out of your blood is embalming fluid.” She ran again in 2000, knocked on over 5000 doors, and beat the incumbent, serving as City of Orlando’s District 4 Commissioner ever since. District 4 runs from the Millenia Mall, down I-4, encompasses Rosalind East of downtown, most of the historic districts, runs over to Colonialtown, over to East Central Park, and runs through the center of the city of Orlando. It is the only district that has a common boundary with every other district.

What are some of your favorite local Asian restaurants and events?

She was awarded the Diversity Champion Award by the Asian American Chamber of Commerce in 2013.
puppy Sienna, a diva cat named Nina Simone, 3 urban chickens named Peep, Cheep, and Bleep, and an assortment of tropical fish.
A UCF graduate with a bachelor of arts in art, Commissioner Sheehan was the first openly-gay elected official in Central Florida, and passed non-discrimination protections and Domestic Partnership legislation for the LGBT community. She is an urban agriculture advocate, and has championed community gardens and urban chickens and also worked with the Trust for Public Land to acquire the Orlando Urban Trail (OUT).
What are some of the issues that are effecting your district today?
Commissioner Sheehan enjoys many outdoor activities including painting, gardening, riding her Vespa, and Dragon Boat racing. She is a huge proponent of the arts and culture in Orlando, and is also a local artist who exhibits her “Bad Kitty” paintings in local clubs and shops. She lives in Colonialtown North in a 1928 Bungalow with her
I love historic preservation and architecture, having served on the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council for 12 years. I championed the purchase of the additional 1.3 acres along Washington Street in Lake Eola Park and also the restoration of the Eola House and the Lake Eola fountain. I support our thriving Main-
I would say that the pressing issues are encouraging better infill development, preserving the charm of our downtown neighborhoods, encouraging small business growth and ensuring public safety. What are some important things you have been working on as City of Orlando Commissioner?

My favorite Asian Restaurants are Pho 88, Little Saigon, Chan’s, TaKo Cheena, Thai House, and Bikkuri Sushi. My favorite festivals are the Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival at the Fairgrounds, and of course, the Dragon Parade Festival in Mills 50, which was a dream come true for me. As the Commissioner who represents a large portion of the Asian business district, I attend many festivals and loved the ceremonial aspects like the lion dance and martial arts, and dragon boats. I thought it would be wonderful to open that up to the general public, and Mills 50, with the help of Agnes Chau, Pauline Ho, Shally Wong, and Gary Lau have made it happen. What would you say to inspire those who want to make their community a better place? The only way to make your community a better place is to volunteer and get involved. I started as a volunteer with my neighborhood association and neighborhood watch block captain. There is a saying I hold dear, “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” I don’t think you can be an effective leader without being invested in your community. The only way to do that is with sweat equity, by volunteering.

applied, and as a result, 35 students from 3rd to 12th grade were awarded in either the category of Scholastic Achievement, Preservation of Ethic Culture and Language, or Special Recognition. This is a wonderful opportunity for Asian-American students to be rewarded for their hard work and to showcase their dedication to our community. These students may be the future teachers, engineers, doctors or legislators, but most importantly, they are going to be the future leaders of their communities, and these awards will motivate them to become more aware and closer to their heritage. The application for AAHC scholarship is available in September of each year. The information is posted on the AAHC website, and a scholarship information session for prospective applicants is held to explain the judging criteria. Then, the applicant has roughly a month to send in his or her application. While the scholarship process may seem stressful at times, in the end the effort does
pay off. Even if one does not win an award, the process of applying provides valuable insight and practice on how to apply for future scholarships, college, or jobs. Personally, I realized that years of applying for this scholarship help make the college process more familiar and less intimidating. Win or lose, I believe applying to the Student Achiever Awards will benefit students of all ages. If you share this belief, I invite you to participate next year or spread the word, so more students can benefit from these awards. As a tip, check out the past application so you can start collecting the information, do your community services, and be ready when the application time comes. Good Luck. Wu Man’s efforts were recognized when she was named Musical America’s 2013 Instrumentalist of the Year, the first time this prestigious award has been bestowed on a player of a non-Western instrument. Wu Man was selected by Yo-Yo Ma as the winner of the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize in music and communication. She is also the first artist from China to have performed at the White House with the noted cellist, YoYo Ma, with whom she now performs as part of the Silk Road Project. Wu Man has collabo-

How to Get Rid of Insomnia Acupressure DIY at Home: Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by
difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep. Insomnia can also be accompanied with other symptoms like waking up often throughout the night with difficulty going back to sleep, waking up too early in the morning or feeling tired and unrested upon waking. Some causes of Insomnia can include: ¥ Illness ¥ Life Stress or significant changes in life (death of a loved one, divorce, job change or job loss) ¥ Certain Medications ¥ Pre-menstrual or menopausal hormonal shifts ¥ Acute digestive issues ¥ Changes in sleep schedule ¥ Emotional or physical discomfort and pain ¥ External environmental factors ¥ Depression or Anxiety ¥ Sleep Apnea Some ways to prevent insomnia: ¥ set the mood (making sure your bedroom is dark, quiet and cool) ¥ Avoid mental or visual stimulation before bed (this includes the little blue light from your electronic devices) ¥ Stick to a regular sleep routine ¥ Avoid naps ¥ Take a hot bath 1-2 hours before bed ¥ Cut down and limit your caffeine, nicotine and alcohol intake Insomnia can be a primary form of disorder not associated or caused by any other health condition, but it can also be a secondary symptom to an underlying health problem or other causes. If left untreated, chronic insomnia can have serious negative impact on your life, affecting not only your energy level, but also your mood, health, performance at work and quality of life. Therefore, it is always important to see your health care provider if you suspect you might have insomnia not only to prevent it from progressing but also to rule out any serious medical conditions that might be the underlying cause for this issue.

The evening of October 18, 2014 was a special night for the AACC. Celebrating its 5th Annual Golden Dragon Awards event to a “sold out” room. Starting the evening was the cocktail reception – it was good to see old friends and welcome new friends. Guests were excited that special guests – Mickey and Minnie Mouse , dressed in Asian costume, were there for a photo opportunity. Souvenir photos were given to the guests at the end of the evening. The Silent Auction had something for everyone. Items ranged from a Marilyn Monroe tote bag, gift baskets, autographed basketball from The Orlando Magic, an iPad mini, gift card tree, jade bracelets, amethyst necklace, picnic basket, to theme park tickets. We thank all of the Silent Auction Donors for their generosity. Still more excitement awaited our guests, a “Lion Dance” performed by the Wah Lum Temple, wound their way thru the reception area and summoned everyone into the dining area. Significance of the Lion Dance is to provide good luck, health and prosperity. What a grand way to start the evening. Valerie Boey, of Fox 35, was the co-emcee along with Glenn Leong, a past president of the
AACC. Welcome remarks were provided by Coco Johnston, President of the AACC, who in turn introduced, Nancy Gidusko of Walt Disney World Resort, our Title Sponsor again this year, who welcomed everyone to Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Corporate Partners were acknowledged and thanked for their participation and support of the AACC – Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando Magic, Universal Orlando Resort, Visit Orlando, Orlando Health, Darden Restaurants, Florida Hospital, SunTrust Bank, OUC, and our newest partner, Publix Supermarkets. And, our Media Sponsor – Asia Trend Magazine. The GDA is to celebrate and recognize excellence and achievement from a select list of individuals and corporations who have helped to make Central Florida a better place to work and live. And the winners are: Golden Dragon Award – Florida Hospital Diversity Champion Award – Dr. Bridget Lee of OUC Golden Hands Award – Hope and Help Center Ellison S. Onizuka Humanitarian Award – Harbor House Asian Entrepreneur of the Year Award – Jing Zhou

Lifetime Achievement Award – C.T. Hsu Congratulations to all the winners and to those that were nominated. Wah Lum Temple also gave performances in Martial Arts and a beautiful Ribbon Dance. To round out the entertainment for the evening was The Philippine Performing Arts Company of Tampa Bay. The costumes and performances were spectacular. Everyone was treated to a taste of Chinese and Filipino culture by these two amazing groups. At the end of the evening all dinner guests went home with their official AACC Travel Chopsticks gift, Chinese take-out boxes of goodies, and one person at each table won the lantern certerpiece to take home. This certainly has been an evening to remember and the AACC looks forward to the next GDA event in 2015. Make sure you purchase your tickets early! The Cameo Theater Restoration It was 1940 in Orlando. There were the usual small town activities for leisure, boating and swimming in Lake Eola or one of the other 32 lakes in Orlando. One could go dancing, bowling, play shuffleboard, ride horses or simply go out for a bite to eat. On evenings and weekends in Orlando, you could go see a movie at one of Orlando’s 5 theaters. On Monday, November 25, 1940, an ad for a NEW theater appeared in the paper – The Cameo Theater located at 1015 E. Colonial. While the theater was not overly fancy, it was appointed with a typically colorful and beautiful art deco style, both inside and out. Colorful lights illuminated the marquis and signage on the building. The Cameo was completed at a cost of $60,000 and opened with “Road to Singapore,” starring Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. The Cameo lasted through the WWII years and quietly closed in 1948. Used

for offices and an occasional concert, it fell into disrepair and sat vacant for many years. In 2013, an Orlando resident and developer, Jorge Boone, purchased the Cameo and renovated the building. The exterior façade was created to be reminiscent of the original Cameo. The ground floor of the building is now occupied by Snap! Space - an art/photography gallery, which hosts exhibits and special events. But Boone wanted to complete the original look of the building, so the Cameo sign needed to be replicated. This was accomplished and the new sign with 300 LED lights was installed on December 3, almost 75 years to the day that the original Cameo theatre opened.

Party City celebrating Hello Kitty’s 40th Anniversary with a huge cake!
Hello Kitty Café food truck selling delicious themed donuts!
How a perfect living room should look!
On November 2nd, Sanrio celebrated their famous character’s 40th anniversary by hosting the very first Hello Kitty convention in Los Angeles, California. This sold out event featured themed art exhibits, food, workshops, and exclusive products. Yuko Yamaguchi, the main designer of Hello Kitty even made an appearance to give hundreds of lucky ticket holders a personalized autograph! Hello Kitty was created in 1974 to inspire happiness, friendship, and sharing across the world. It is no wonder that she has so many dedicated fans that would travel across the world to celebrate her symbol. Her famous motto, “You can never have too many friends” has proven to be a strong campaign in the retail industry. Her brand has found its way into many companies, some of which were featured at the convention such as Dylan’s candy shop, Sephora, and Loungefly accessories. As excited fans shuffled into the convention, each person was handed an exclusive pin to wear along with an awesome Hello KittyCon
2014 book bag. Several stations were set up in the outdoor area which hosted activities such as coloring, pumpkin decorating, and temporary tattoos. Several food trucks provided for hungry fans but the best food truck goes to the Hello Kitty Café which sold adorable bow themed water bottles, cake pops, and glazed doughnuts-almost too cute to eat! Upon entering the convention, there were Hello Kitty themed ATMs to the right side and several phone charging stations to the left side. The main room hosted the stage, DJ booth, and the wall of fame where Sanrio framed its signature gift bags of over 40 years. Amazing Hello Kitty murals and art exhibits filled every room giving a specific theme to each section of the event. To the left was the souvenir store which sold exclusive products, the “HKink shop” where fans could get real Hello Kitty tattoos, and the Target sponsored room. The back of the convention hosted two fabulous rows of Hello Kitty fashion and designer dresses to showcase her ability to be couture! The most traffic was on the far left side of the convention where Hello
Asia Trend Magazine │ Reaching more than 10,000 readers every month
Kitty themed products were sold. Themed spam, purses, clothing, candy, dolls, and car accessories are just a few on the long list of items that were for sale. For being the first convention ever, this event was such a success!! Fans hope that Sanrio makes this an annual event so that more people will have the opportunity to experience this celebration in person! The Japanese American Museum adjacent to the convention also had a lot of positive traffic that weekend, even drawing in celebrities such as Tyra Banks and Katy Perry! This amazing museum provides fans with a better insight into Hello Kitty’s background as a character and holds over 1,000 pieces of Hello Kitty products accumulated by Sanrio over a 40 year span. If you are ever visiting Los Angeles, please take some time to visit! Tina Buadaeng
