Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orange County’s Office of Economic Development recently met with the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore Kirk Wagar to discuss trade, commerce and economic opportunities for Florida companies in Singapore. Mayor Jacobs and Ambassador Wagar were joined by Darrel Ching, Commercial Attaché, Paul Mitchell and John Diep Enterprise Florida, who will be leading an export sales mission to Singapore and Malaysia in September 2014. According to Wagar, Singapore is ripe for in-
vestment by Florida companies. “The country is virtually a free port,” Ambassador Wagar said. “It is a major trading hub; importing products from consumer goods to high technology and industrial goods for re-export to third countries.” Bilateral trade in goods between the U.S. and Singapore rose 40 percent in the last decade to more than $48 billion in 2013, underlining the benefits of the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) enacted in 2004. The U.S. is the number two supplier of Singapore’s total imports, just be-
hind Malaysia. And in 2013, Florida exported more than $237,000,000 of goods to Singapore. Some of the top exports from Florida to Singapore include aircraft and spacecraft parts, medical instruments and other high-tech equipment. “I am so pleased that our international colleagues recognize that Orange County’s diversified, high-tech economy has evolved into a global hub for international business investment,” Mayor Jacobs said.

Japanese community welcomes the Men’s National Team of Japan in Tampa for two pre-World Cup matches The All Japan soccer team arrived in Florida
on May 29th for final conditioning towards the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. On the following day, Coach Zaccheroni, the 23 players, 2 trainers and coaching staff began endurance and game strategy practice in the humidity and heat, simulating real matches in Brazil. In this camp, the team aimed to increase speed and accuracy as well as to condition to play in the climate of Brazil. On June 2nd, at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Japan had an International Friendly Match with Costa Rica, which Japan won 3-1. In the following match with Zambia on the 6th, they also won 4-3, gaining momentum towards the first official match in Brazil. In both matches, students from Orlando Hoshuko. and children from Tampa were able to enter the stadium with the referees and players as the escort kids. In this way, the communities of Orlando and Tampa supported the games. Commenting that they felt well prepared, Team Japan arrived in Brazil on June 7th. Team Japan, which has qualified for five consecutive World Cups, will be facing Côte d’Ivoire in Recife on the 19th and Colombia in Cuiabá on the 24th. Kazuki Ishikura
I don’t always go to soccer games, but when I do, I go see Team Japan. The last time I went to a live soccer game was back in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics to cheer on Team Japan. This month, I had another wonderful opportunity to see them live all leveled up in their final training in Florida before the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil! Team Japan held an International Friendly Match against Costa Rica and Zambia. Before both matches, the players politely walked over to the stands and bowed to the fans, getting us excited. We were all so excited at how close they were! It would be impossible to see them so close in Japan or Brazil! The girls behind me wouldn’t stop screaming how close they were to the players and how cool they were. I was given the great privilege to go back stage to tend the escort kids who were from Orlando Hoshuko (Japanese school). The children’s hearts were pumping and many couldn’t even speak. It was a wonderful opportunity for the stu-

dents of Orlando Hoshuko to be able to see the best of the best in Japanese Soccer first hand. Seeing the cheerfulness and talkativeness of Zambian players compared to the Japanese players before the game, many people thought that it will be an easy win for Team Japan. However, Zambia surprised us all by scoring 2 points on Japan so easily. Then, Japan scored 3 points making use of their compact and aggressive soccer to make a 3-2 lead However, Zambia scored again with only one minute left on the clock to tie the score 3-3. I felt that many people being discouraged and giving
up on Japan winning, but I kept on believing in Team Japan. Few seconds later, in the loss-time, Yoshito Okubo beautifully scored a pass from Aoyama and made the score 4-3. Everyone was crazy when Okubo scored! Team Japan defended the point in the last few minutes and edged a 4-3 victory over Zambia. It was truly a great game. In the end, players all came to bow to show their appreciation to the fans! I am so glad that we were able to be the last people to send team Japan off to Brazil, and we hope and wish you all the very best in the World Cup! Akiko Kanaoka

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration in Melbourne By Terry Heim
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May as mandated by Public law 102450 of the U. S. Congress and the White House annual Procla-mation to honor the achievements and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans with observances through appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities. Last May 24th, Florida’s Space Coast Filipino-American Charitable and Educational Foundation, Inc. (SFACEF) hosted their fourth Asian Pacific Festival at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion in Melbourne. Festivities featured a day of music, ethnic dances and ethnic foods including the refreshing “halo-halo” for a hot day. Throughout the day entertainment consisted of vocal renditions, saxophonist, Thai classical dance, Indonesian Dance and Musical groups with the

little known “Angklong” and several Hawaiian and Tahitian dances.. Then a Cultural Fashion Show ensued featuring costumes from different Asian Countries, mainly from the different regions of the Philippines modeled by our own Filipina residents and young men wearing the “Barong Tagalog”. In the evening, the highlight entertainment was the internationally travelled Leyte Dance Theatre of Tacloban City, Philippines, survivor of the 2013 super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. They have been performing in different cities in the USA to raise funds to help rebuild their City in Leyte. Their repertoire is composed of dances from the different regions of the Philippines including dances of the Hispanic era. The choreography fused folk movements with ballet and contem-porary forms giving it a distinctive dance
interpretation. The 21 members are also accomplished singers giving us a rendition of both the U.S. and Philippine national anthems among other songs. This was a delightful two hours of dance and music enjoyed by everybody. We had visitors from Miami, Orlando and Jacksonville among others. All in all, this celebration of our heritage was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all who came, especially the volunteers who made it possible to put on such a show and to the families who housed the dance troupe. Maraming salamat! Mabuhay! Traveling to compete in Chicago is life changing for the cops and kids – and will include airfare, hotel, ground transportation, touring Chicago, meals, back packs, team race shirts and expenses surrounding the Festival. Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary By Caroline Wei-Berk
In a blink of an eye, the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay (TCCTF) has turned ten. On June 21, the TCCTF held its 10th Annual Meeting at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant on the picturesque Rocky Point waterfront. Past presidents of TCCTF including Dr. Maywa Yei, Dr. Charles Wang, Mr. Robert Chen, and Mr. Wen Chung were present to celebrate this milestone. Many old members returned to catch up with friends. A delegation from the Orlando Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce also came to the annual meeting. The current President Mr. Stan Chen opened

the meeting by greeting the members and guests. He reviewed Chamber’s activities of the past year, and thanked the Directors who served their terms on the Board. As the guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, the two keynote speakers drew their attention. The first speaker was Mr. Y.Y. Yang from the PNC Bank. Mr. Y. Y. Pang talked about the number one concern of small businesses – finance and how PNC Bank’s small business loan program may be able to assist. The second speaker was Dr. Lowei Han from the Florida College of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Han gave a humorous
discussion of the origin of chronic soft tissue pain and stain. Dr. Han also gave hands-on illustrations of the pressure – point relief that the audience can administer to self, family and friends. His famous “three-seconds miracle” have the recipients cry in pain and beg for more. Who knew ancient Chinese remedies can be so much fun. The event ended with the raffle drawings of multiple prizes donated by the Directors and Advisors. For more information and future events, please visit www.tcctf.org.

They awake the world by Dragon Boating!
THE JAX FIRE DRAGONS
— Amazing success in a short span of time!!
The JAX Fire Dragons are North Florida’s first and most successful competitive dragon boat racing team. Founded in 2012, the club is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization dedicated to fostering the many health and social benefits of paddling a dragon boat. Our roster consists of 65 paddlers ranging in age from 15 to 73 and we race in mixed, women’s and (soon) BCS divisions. 2014 is our second full year of competitive racing and our success has been driven by hard work and dedication, attention to proper paddling technique and a passion for this great sport. Our Team President and Head Coach, Joe Longobardi, and his wife, Berni, are experienced dragon boaters who moved to Jacksonville in 2010 after more than a decade in Miami. Having been members of competitive teams in Miami, they dedicated a lot of time and effort to bring dragon boating to this part of Florida where the sport was unknown. The JAX Fire Dragons were born in early 2012 and since then, Coach Joe has literally introduced the sport to more than 300 enthusiastic newcomers resulting in not just the formation of the Fire Dragons but 2 nonaffiliated teams in the area as well. In addition, two former Fire Dragons moved to Washington State at the end of 2013 and quickly re-formed a dormant racing team there and are currently coaching them on to success. And, perhaps a crowning achievement for the area since Coach Joe introduced the
sport, Jacksonville had its very first Dragon Boat Festival in September of 2013 benefitting In the Pink, a boutique for women with cancer. The successful growth of the JAX Fire Dragons into a respected and competitive team in such a short period of time is indicative of what can happen when people discover the spiritual, physical and mental attributes of paddling in a crew of 20 fellow dragon boaters. Your body is strengthened, your mind is cleared and you reach a spiritual zone of being one with the water. All of this comes with hard work and the plethora of medals and trophies earned by the Fire Dragons is the result. A significant achievement was the Southeast Regional Dragon Boat Association awarding of two Senior A Division (40+) berths in the 2014 World Club Crew Championships to the JAX Fire Dragons’ mixed crew and its all women’s crew, CHIX with STIX to be held in Ravenna, Italy in September 2014. The team is extremely proud of winning this distinction at such an early point in its history and is very excited to go up against competitive clubs from over 22 countries competing there.
Jacksonville area to include river and highway cleanup campaigns, supporting long distance swimmers in a St. John’s river race, fund raising and other donations for various local charities, and continuously spreading the news about dragon boating to young and old. We are proud of our members who come from all walks of life and are more than willing to give of their time to help foster this sport. We are also proud of our sponsors who believe in what we are doing and without whose generosity, our activities would be seriously curtailed. With the JAX Fire Dragons representing the Jacksonville area in Italy in September and the second Jacksonville DB Festival happening two weeks later, the sport is going to continue to get a lot of positive attention. The future remains bright for dragon boating to grow and prosper in our area and our success story is a good one for new and future teams to consider around the country. All it takes is hard work and dedication, a sponsor or two, a bit of luck and most importantly, a huge devotion to this amazing team sport.
The Fire Dragons, however, are not just about racing. The team has involved itself in numerous community events in the

Sushi presented in an authentic style

Maki
Are you able to tell the difference between
Sushi, Sashimi and Tataki??? 寿司、刺身、たたき、違いは何? Sushi is one of the most famous Japanese cuisines. Teriyaki chicken is very well known as well and may now be the most known and consumed Japanese food worldwide. Even if you eat Sushi frequently as your favorite meal, do you know Sashimi and Tataki as well? Are you able to tell the difference between “Sushi”, “Sashimi” and “Tataki”?
By Teri Mitchell
Wasabi (Japanese horseradish) or Shoga (ginger). Tataki is also raw fish, but the surface is cooked; lightly seared. For example, when making Tuna Tataki, we sear a block of raw tuna (oblong, about 8”x3”x1”), cool it down, coat it in seasonings, pound it with the back of a knife, and then, slice it
to eat. Tataki literally means to “pound”. We enjoy it with “Ponzu Shoyu”: citrus soy sauce. I usually enjoy Sushi and Sashimi with orthodox Wasabi-joyu (Wasabi + soy sauce), Tataki with Ponzu Shoyu, and adding a little Wasabi in Ponzu Shoyu creates an innovative flavor.
Some people misunderstand Sushi by thinking that it always contains raw fish. However, Sushi can also be made with cooked food only. There are two major types of Sushi. They are “Nigiri” and “Maki”. When we talk about Sushi in Japan, in most cases, that indicates “Nigiri” and it is pricier than “Maki”. “Maki” is Sushi rolls that are originally very simple and “Nori” (seaweed paper) is outside in Japan. In the U.S., so many kinds of rolls have been created and the authentic taste of Sushi seems to have faded out.
Assortment of Sashimi Tuna Tataki
Now, let’s get back to our original Japanese Sushi concept. Basically, Sushi is a combination of “Shari” and “Neta”. Shari is Japanese short grain rice seasoned with sweet rice vinegar and Neta is a slice of fish (seafood) topping the rice. In Nigiri, rice is hand-molded and Neta is laying over it. Sashimi is slices of raw fish (seafood). It is usually enjoyed with soy sauce and spices such as

World Tai Chi and Qigong Day Proclamation signed by Mayor Buddy Dyer
World Tai Chi and Qigong Day in Kissimmee FL The last Saturday in April always marks the day where Tai Chi and Qigong students of “all levels”come to “play Taiji” by doing their routines bare-hand or with weapons to spread an “Internal energy wave” starting at 10 am with it’s main purpose “to heal the world” and educate the general public the amazing health-benefits Tai Chi and Qigong has to offer! I want to personally thank Johnson Young and Lana Liu for letting me use the Westgate Gate Flea Market {Bldg. B. backparking lot} 8548 West Irlo Bronson Hwy. As the site for this event! This number of people “this year” as compared to other years was significantly “smaller” but sometimes “less is more” and the “quality of the people” was outstanding! From the teachers to the spectators everyone was “open” to listen to everyone’s views and opinions and “try new things” A woman from “across the world” Denmark found out about my event though a good friend of mine, Eleanor Wong who was vacationing for 2 weeks in orlando and “formally” asked me if she could attend my event. I said “All are welcome who are interested” She then told me she has been a “stu-

I was very impressed! I said to Stella, I would be “honored” if you would attend and she accepted and brought her husband Allan as well. At 10 am, “The event “ started, participants began “their forms” which included “Yang 24-short form, “Taoist-earthstyle”, “Tung-style to name a few. The “spectators” watched as the “Tai Chi players” performed their movements as”fluid as running water” with a constant flow of good “jing”being transmitted to “the world”! One of the spectators Lois, a good friend of mine, noticed even though the forms were “different” she could see the balance, coordination and concentration the “same” with all the performers. “it was just so beautiful to watch”! After the forms concluded, the audience wanted to know the background of each “demonstrator” which we gladly shared to show the “committent and dedication” it takes to be “proficient at this Art! After a small break, the teachers, “sifu’s” all volunteered to share their “Qigongs” with the
audience letting them feel through the “different’ movements their own “internal energies”! It was now time to start the “Friendship Demonstrations” which included Yang-24, Meimen “Chan Mei Door Taiji {learned in Taipei, Taiwan}, William CC Chen style, 60 movements and straight sword form, and the fast, Chen style Broadsword. It is now time to thank “everyone” who showed up and participated, with the majority consensus that the “groups internal energy generated from this event in some “good way” healed the world!!
