The Central Florida
Summer Festival with Asian Food, Zongzi, Cultural Performances and Karaoke
Agnes Chau
By Asia Trend Gary Lau, Peter Lau
The first Central Florida Summer Festival 2009, organized by Florida Chinese Business Association, Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce Greater Orlando, Chinese American Association of Central Florida and Kissimmee American Chinese Center, attracted more than 600 attendees to celebrate the Duanwu Festival (also known as Double Fifth or Dragon Boat Festival) with food, zongzi, cultural performances and karaoke.
Joe Wang, Mary Johnson, Agnes Chau, Mei Chen and emcee Cynthia Hsu
Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of Commissioner Tony Ortiz’s Sing along the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar is a significant holiday celebrated in China with the longest history. Duanwu has been marked by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats. It is originated from the attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan who was drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens threw bamboo leaves filled CAACF Dancing Troupe with cooked rice (zongzi) into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. They also beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles in order to keep the fish and evil spirits from his body. This later on turned into the custom of eating zongzi and paddling Dragon Boat.

Clearwater’s Japanese Culture and Lantern Festival

Clearwater, Florida has the second longest sister city relationship with a Japanese city in the state. According to the ConsulateGeneral of Japan in Miami’s website, Clearwater and Nagano, Japan have been sisters since Mar. 14, 1959. This relationship is only surpassed by Miami Beach, which formed its bond with Fujisawa nine days earlier. Nagano is a city of well over 350,000 residents and is located near the geographical center of Japan, just south of the northern coast in central Honshū. It is most famous for Zenkō-ji, a 7th century Buddhist temple. The temple is built on a hilltop within the city and contains a hidden Buddha statue that is never seen by the public, although a replica is show every six or seven years. (Informa-

tion on Nagano accessed from Wikipedia on 5/13/09). To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their sister city status, the City of Clearwater organized a Japanese Culture and Lantern Festival on April 25, 2009, scheduled to coincide closely with the annual lantern festival in Nagano. Nagano sent to Clearwater for this event four large wooden lanterns of the kind that were used to light the streets of their city leading up to Zenkō-ji temple. The silhouette images illuminated in these lanterns were designed by Clearwater residents and students. Clearwater’s Lantern Festival was held downtown in Station Square Park and on
Omotesando Street, which was closed for the afternoon event. The demonstrations and music started at 4 p.m. and culminated with a procession and lantern lighting ceremony at 8:30. The public was invited to join the city-block-long procession and were given commemorative paper lanterns lit by multicolored lights. His Honor Hiroshi Yamaguchi, the Japanese Consul General, was part of the lantern lighting ceremony. Mr. Yamaguchi also participated in a tea ceremony performed by Kaleisia Tea Lounge (thetealounge.com) of Tampa earlier in the day. The mayor of Clearwater and the Consul General shared the honor of lighting the lanterns from Nagano.

A Time for Unity, Diversity, and Community The Asian American Heritage Council Potluck was a great success with over 250 in attendance. At Jay Blanchard Park, children and families came to eat, play, and relax in the beautiful Florida summer weather. Halong Bay: Jewel of the Bay
In this tropical country, there’s a rare and unique paradise that has flourished over the last few centuries and continues to be one of the most fascinating and intriguing tourist spots on the planet. By Asia Trend Halong Bay is located in the Northeast of Vietnam, belonging to QuangNinh Province. To the west and northwest, Halong Bay stretches from Yen Hung District, and includes the large urban areas of Halong City and Cam Pha Town, as well as Van Don Island District. To the south and southeast, it is adjacent to the western Tonkin Gulf and to the west and southwest lies Cat Ba Island in the province of Hai Phong. On the world map, Halong Bay borders to China in the north and in the east it is adjacent to the East Sea. The legend has it that the spectacular and almost living islands were formed after a family of dragons was sent from the heavens to defend the country. They spewed jewels and jade, which ended up being the islands.. In 1962, the Ministry of Culture and Information classified Halong Bay as a National Landscape Site. Halong Bay has been recognized twice by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area for its universal values of landscape, geology and geomorphology, respectively in 1994 and 2000, an area of 434 sq. km. including 775 islands.
Enjoy the cruise to Quan Lan Island
The marine life in the Halong Bay is also pretty exciting with 200 species of fish and 450 species of mollusks around, along with tiny pockets of tropical forests on each island. Vietnamese cultural gift store
For food lovers, the Halong Bay is an absolute heaven as the 10 floating villages that reside here all rely on fishing for their livelihood, meaning you would be served some of the best marine cuisine in the world. There are more than 989 amazing islands and islets to see and that will surely leave you pretty busy over a week or two, but make sure you don’t miss out on the Kissing Rocks, Voi Islet, Ga Choi Islet and Mai Nha Islet.

Tourism has had a negative impact on this delicate ecosystem while it has boosted the area’s economy. So if you happen to visit this tropical paradise, be sure you cause as little damage as possible to the fragile ecosystem, while you enjoy its natural wonders.

CelebrASIAN EXPO at Universal Orlando Resort
By Judi Lebredo
On May 28, Universal Orlando Resort’s Asian Pacific Heritage Month Task Force as well as the Diversity & Inclusion Team and ASPIRE (Asian Pacific American Team Members Standing together to Promote, Inspire, Recruit, Retain, and Empower Tomorrow’s UO Leaders) held their annual cultural fair and expo, CelebrAsian. The event was the grand finale to a month-long celebration of the Asian Pacific culture.
Once again, local cultural organizations, student associations, and businesses participated. Sound Stage #33 came alive with the beat of the Hung Fut Pai Chinese Martial Arts & Lion Dance Association to start the festivities and ended with the distinguished Orlando Taiko Dojo Japanese drummers. Other prominent acts included SinoElite’s musicians and acrobats, saxophone solo by Gary Lau of Global Media, Lanakila’s Polynesian Review, Orlando Chinese Professional Association’s fan dance, and dances performed by UCF’s Filipino Student Association and Delta Phi Lambda Asian Interest Sorority. In addition, vendors such as Panda Express, Bento Cafe, Mama Ely’s Bakery, CiTea, My Kokeshi, Samara Fashions, Global Media (Asia Trend and Chinese calligraphy) participated as well as J Club (Japanese calligraphy and origami), Asian American Heritage Council, Raja Yoga Meditation Center (including henna demonstra-
tions), Elemental Nursery, Taj Mahal store, Feng Shui Associates, Raj Travel Service, and IACE Travel. The Universal Orlando ASPIRE and Asian Pacific Heritage Month Diversity Task Force also had exhibit tables featuring curry food samples and curry facts, chopstick use and etiquette, anime, Chinese astrology, lei contest entries, and elaborate food carvings from Universal chefs. Last but not least, there were exhibits of photos and memorabilia from Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Singapore, and drawings for Universal Studios Dubailand. The Diversity and Inclusion Team and the ASPIRE task force are proud to host several multicultural activities and events throughout the year. Universal Orlando Resort encourages team members to take part with internal affinity groups as part of their diversity initiatives and core mission values. “Every year this event gets better and better. I credit our ASPIRE group which collectively invite some of the best of the local Asian Pacific community to help enlighten and bring ethnic awareness to our team members. We are fortunate to be able to experience this diverse and culturally-rich signature event right here on property,” said Tim Arnst, Senior Vice President of Universal Parks and Resorts, adding “this is a wonderful way to conclude Universal Orlando Resort’s Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebrations.” Gary Lau

Asian Pacific American Festival – May 16, 2009
By Victor Alzona Victor Alzona
It was a typical Florida weekend that day; sunny blue skies, warm tropical breezes but the sights and sounds would have you thinking of far away places like Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, India, and the Hawaiian Islands. Yes, these are the places that I recently visited during my adventures at the F. Burton Smith Regional Park in Brevard County while celebrating the annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival sponsored by the Florida Space Coast Filipino-American Charitable & Educational Foundation (SFACEF). Many had gathered that day to soak in the rich Asian Pacific culture and to share a common thread we Asian Pacific Americans have shared for decades; diversity in culture and heritage. I personally would like to add my favorite aspects of these events, the variety of ethnic foods and the wonderful entertainment. Performers such as the Anglung Orchestra, Bayanihan at Wedgefield, Major “J” Hance, Fumiko Dudnick, Philip Mahoney, Rachel Tobillo, Philippine Cultural Dance Ensemble of Brevard, Eric Cruz, Sanlahi, Ultimate Martial Arts Academy, and the India Cultural Dance troupe filled our day with adventure for these far away places.

Celebrating
Buddha’s Birthday
at the Fo Guang Shan Guang Ming Temple By Shally Wong
The Guang Ming Temple in Orlando celebrated the Buddha’s Birthday on May 3rd with Orange County officials and hundreds of attendees. Flowers, fruits and incense were offered to Buddha by groups of children, youth, and Buddhists. After chanting and prayer led by Venerable Chueh Fan, it came to the highlight of the day – Bathing Buddha. Bathing Buddha tradition signifies “the purified body and mind” and cleanses one’s greed, anger and ignorance. The celebration continued with traditional dragon dance and lion dance, vegetarian food fair at the temple courtyard and cultural performances featuring music, dances and acrobatic performances in the Main Shrine. Besides celebrating Buddha’s Birthday, the temple also held the opening ceremony of the Cloud & Water Exhibition - “A 50 Year Anniversary Photobiography of Master Hsing Yun” which will last till July 12, 2009. Master Hsing Yun is the founder of the Fo Guang Shan International Buddhist order, which is headquartered in Taiwan and supports temples worldwide.

PARO, the Therapeutic Robot Seal
visited Rosen Centre, Orlando By Asia Trend
Gary Lau
Consulate General of Japan in Miami and PARO Robots U.S., Inc. held a demonstration of Japan ’s most advanced therapeutic robot on May 11th to the Central Florida health care industry. PARO is an advanced interactive robot developed by AIST, a leading Japanese industrial automation pioneer. It allows the documented benefits of animal therapy to be administered to patients in environments such as hospitals and extended care facilities where live animals present treatment or logistical difficulties. Paro has five kinds of sensors: tactile, light, audition, temperature, and posture sensors, with which it can perceive people and its environment. Paro can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers, and to respond to its new name. For example, if you stroke it every time you touch it, Paro will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked. If you hit it, Paro remembers its previous action and tries not to do that action.
20 PAROs were loaned out in US in several assisted livings, nursing homes, hospitals, and schools for special needs children since early 2008, and received fabulous feedbacks from those residents and caregivers. PARO will be available for purchase in August 2009 for individuals as well as institutions.

General Motors
and
bankruptcy
A much needed wake up call By Angela Chiu
that it will back GM vehicle warranties as a way to increase consumer confidence and encourage people to purchase vehicles from not only GM but other companies. The plan states that 60 percent of ownership stake will belong to the federal government, 17.5 percent share going to the United Auto Workers, 12.5 percent to the Canadian government and 10 percent to unsecured bondholders. Existing GM shareholders are expected to be wiped out.
GM’s bankruptcy filing is the largest for an industrial company and is the fourth-largest in US history. The industry will continue to rely on financial assistance from the government, domestic and foreign, during the reorganization process despite the fact that the company is said to have $172.81 billion in debt and only $89.29 billion in assets. $30 billion from the Treasury Department, $9.5 billion from Canada, and $20 billion in taxpayer money GM has already received have been allotted to aid the company. People have often criticized that the $20 billion granted in the form of loans was ill spent and question the need and the usage of additional funds. Others are surprised at the huge amount of money that the company has already exhausted and will continue to use.
The uncertainty of GM’s future economic standing may scare away customers from buying vehicles anytime soon and the resale value of GM cars is expected to drop as did the values of Chrysler cars. Someone purchasing a GM vehicle today may have some difficulty with repairs under warranty because dealerships are closing to accommodate the change. Furthermore, GM’s bankruptcy filing could affect consumers who drive Fords, Toyotas, Hondas other brands of vehicles because the automobile industry is intertwined to each other through their suppliers. Simply speaking, the supply, demand, and price of a product, in this case GM automobiles, are likely to affect future supply, demand, and price of compliments (products that are commonly used/associated with each other) and substitutes (products that may be used in place of the original product), in this case, other brands of vehicles. So how does the so called fall of a major industry affect the common citizen? If you have been planning on purchasing a vehicle, prices will be low for the next several month. Old owners of GM vehicles should pay attention to the dealerships near them for news of possible closing and should schedule any necessary tuneups before dealerships close
The Obama Administration answered this by saying that the funds were needed to reach the envisioned end goal of GM. GM must reorganize into a self-sustainable size and give majority ownership stake to the government, and because of this, plans have also been made to close down 14 plants. The federal government has declared
Yet, with this situation at hand, the filing of Chapter 11 by GM may not entirely have negative ramifications. The silver lining of the situation is that price cuts, rebates, and other incentives will most likely be present in the next few months. Cash-back offers and discounts most likely will rise in value (estimated around a couple thousand dollars) and will
On June 1st, General Motors (GM), a century-old automaker, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as part of the Obama administration’s plan. The company will follow a course similar to that taken by Chrysler LLC in April earlier this year when the smaller company filed for Chapter 11.
24 June 2009 asiatrendmagazine.com
serve as an incentive to lure in potential buyers. Furthermore, GM vehicles account for a large percentage of cars and supply of parts, shops, and technicians familiar with the vehicles are unlikely to wane quickly and the federal government has already promised to back warranties for GM vehicles. Furthermore, it is the needed shock to reality that many individuals need. While there are many things that may have attributed to the collapse of a major company, a majority of people have blamed the fall to have come from a lack of foresight and planning. The idea of bankruptcy have not been a recent issue; since 2008 the problem has come attention to many people and on November 16 of last year, former Chairman and Chief Executive G. Richard Wagoner Jr. decided to address the rumor. He made a declaration to his 325,000 employees that bankruptcy is “unnecessary.” “There is no plan to file for Chapter 11 protection… [such an action is] contrary to the interests of our employees, stock- and bondholders, dealers, and our suppliers and customers.” At the time, instead of trying to find a solution or a possible way to better the company’s standing, the potential problem was talked down in an effort that the situation would dissolve by itself. Honestly, there is no true source or answer to the question, “Who’s fault is it?” In reality, everyone is involved. But people should also focus on a way to turn the situation back around and ensure that this will not happen to any other companies. If anything, the physical state of GM’s company is not as likely to affect the market as much as the layoffs related to company adjustment and restructuring. The US simply will not be able to handle the burden of increased unemployment if another major company fails. Yes, management should still be held responsible for the ills they have caused but people need to point less fingers at management and point out more new ideas to ensure this does not happen again. Little Filial Manages Home 小孝治家 Moderate Filial Manages Enterprise 中孝治企 Filial Devotion Manages Country 大孝治國治天下 By Kerby Kuek
The teaching of Tao often places great emphasis on Values and Virtues of individual, such collective of personal values and tributes often ended up with mass management or should I say in more fad term, leadership of a group of people like family, enterprises as well as country. -The Yin and Yang theory. The word filial in broader context includes the love for respect, respect especially for elderly, for family, for friends and for human being in general that include your enemy. Such value is often lead or connected to virtues like humanism, trustworthiness, justice, etiquette and camaraderie. Little Filial Manages Home 修身治家 This statement is not hard to understand, as this basic inner value would put a family interest especially elderly far beyond personal desire. Such value is and will dictate the level of happiness within the family, and the ability to understand such statement would help individual to manage and lead family. The harmony of a family would be felt and this would serve as a pillar to current social reform catalyst to bring in togetherness and hopefully to reduce divorce rate and other related complicated social problems. Believe in it and you will progress! When the family relationship is in a mess, the need to have merciful parents and filial sons to revert such condition. Moderate Filial Manages Enterprise 治企須行孝 This level would only be achieved if one were able to fulfill previous level of Little Filial. This statement would require reader to think and act like a leader, a leader should learn to listen and act accordingly to uphold the interest of a group of people far exceeded a small group
of people like family. This value is critical in managing firm and enterprise, small community and a like. Such collective behavioral pattern of groups of people would require individual to think for the benefit of a general consensus and any individualistic style and hero type action would not serve the purpose. Filial Devotion Manages Country 治國平天下須以孝道為根本 The basic and most essential value to rule and lead a country or large community is none other than filial devotion. When chaos and bad rulers were rampant in a country, the need to have loyal ministers to revert such condition. This is to let us know that a country leader should love its people and place the interest far exceeded a small group of people especially crony. Such favoritism would jeopardize country interest as a whole. Recently the President of US has put a side religion differences between US and Muslims Communities is an example of Filial Devotion, a devotion to set the world for peace. The President said ‘if all sides face the sources of tension squarely and focus on mutual interests, we can find a new way forward.’ A few examples of philanthropists like Li Ka Shi (Hong Kong), Warrant Buffet and Bill Gates that have turned big portion of their wealth into charity contribution to make the world a better place is a typical example of Filial Devotion. The need to have filial should be embedded into each individual for betterment for a nation. This should start somewhere and the time is now!!! Master Kerby Kuek • info@misterfengshui.com
Master Kerby Kuek releases new book
POWER OF FENG SHUI
This is another Kerby’s publication in metaphysics. His commitment and perseverance to preach and promote metaphysics far exceeds that of most professional practitioners. As metaphysician, one must be adequately equipped with the right frame of mind and must possess the inner values and virtues of ‘benevolence’,’ justice’, ‘etiquette’, ‘trustworthiness’ and ‘wit’. The passion to serve our community and nation should be firmly embedded in the practitioners. To prioritize this over other commitments is not easy but Kerby has once again displayed his great resolve in this particular area. His fine mix of mind and faith cannot be disputed. His virtues and values can be felt through his writings and articulate comments on articles.

Master Kerby Kuek, Chief Disciple of Xuan Kong Zhang Pai, has been practicing Feng Shui and Life Reading for more than 10 years. His areas of expertise include Chinese Astrology, Name Analysis, Face Reading and I-Ching. Kuek holds a Master Degree in Business Administration (Newport University, USA) and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management (State University of New York, USA). Upon completing his education, Kuek moved to Hong Kong and discovered the fascinating disciplines of Chinese astrology, name analysis, Feng Shui, life and face reading, and I-Ching. Once skeptical of Chinese metaphysics, Kuek is now a skilled practitioner and strong believer. He has put a great deal of effort into finding the real essence of 5,000 years of ancient Chinese tools. He has developed techniques and approaches that are more practical for practitioners to use when applying these ancient tools in our contemporary world.

Taiko no Tatsujin for Wii and DS
People say the game is childish but I LIKE IT. The seemingly-endless avalanche of Nintendo games, the tiniest of precious jewels appeared. Is it as important as Club Nintendo in the U.S. or new games? No, but it’s a neat game, and it’s the Taiko no Tatsujin Wii bundle. The game, which is slated for Japan on Dec 12 2008. The bundle come with a wireless drum. Which is a big Wii accessory we could really get behind. The bundle retails for ¥7,980 ($75), and additional drums can be purchased for ¥3,990 ($38). We’ll probably never see it, unless you

If you’re spending time in Asia this summer, LADIES MARKET, HONG KONG
One of the most talked about markets in Hong Kong, this is a must-visit for shoppers looking for cheap clothing, bags, watches, toys and knick knacks. Brand junkies will be mildly amused by the imitation monogrammed bags, which vary in quality and are selected from laminated photos. Open day and night, the after-dark neon lights add to the ambience.

Spin New York,
Susan Sarandon’s latest feat
She loves acting and is also passionate about sports. Now Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon is set to open a table tennis bar in New York .
The 62-year-old actress plans to launch it in June and will call it Spin New York . “There are a lot of tables, Olympic tables, Olympic lighting and it’s a bar,” she said. Brought to you by the same crazy table-tennis upstarts who curate the eclectic Naked Ping-Pong party scene, think of Spin as Soho House meets a 1972 YMCA basement. Everything you’ve ever wanted in a ping-pong joint is here: 13,000 square feet of Olympic-quality table tennis flanked by a huge bar, private lessons, regular celeb-hosted parties.
Susan Sarandon
The expansive space is decked out with Olympic matting, 15 tables and locker rooms with overnight paddle storage, not to mention the Fred Perry Room, a private VIP space with a table made entirely of mirrors (perfect for when things get a little frisky after a couple of matches and a little tequila).
frolic four of the best street markets in the region. SUAN LUM NIGHT BAZAAR, BANGKOK
Suan Lum is Chatuchak market minus the heat, crowds and disorder. For retail respite, swing by the beer garden for drinks and live music, or watch a Thai puppet show at the Joe Louis Theatre.
SUNDAY STREET MARKET, CHIANG MAI
A Chiang Mai institution, this vibrant market is a superb showcase of Northern Thailand’s handicrafts, many personally created by the stallholders themselves. This once-weekly bazaar kicks off on Sunday afternoon and is open until late in the evening.

Asian American Teen hosted Miss Miracle Charity Pageant
By Asia Trend
to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network “I love life. I shouldn’t be here. By all rights I should have died. My whole life was a miracle. I feel it is my duty to give something back. You’ve got to give yourself, not money, but essence of yourself that makes life meaningful.” These are words by Henri Landwirth, a person who truly touched many lives. Asian American teen Elizabeth Tran has followed the footsteps of her role model Henri Landwirth and hosted a charity pageant called Miss Miracle to raise funds and bring public awareness to Children’s Miracle Network. After Elizabeth’s crowning on February 1st as Miss Central Florida Coast Outstanding Teen, she had the opportunity to learn more about Children’s Miracle Network as it is the official national platform of the Miss America Organization. Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization with a goal to raise funds for Children’s hospitals to benefit kids with cancer, birth defects, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart diseases

and more. These funds have enabled the sick children to receive adequate medical care regardless of their financial ability. “It was a tough process but the result is very rewarding. The most difficult part is to find the sponsors in this slow economy.” claimed Elizabeth. “I was thrilled to receive my first reply after two months from John Robert Powers Orlando to donate over $7,000.00 worth of acting and modeling scholarships. Then I got a confirmation from Sheraton Suites Orlando Airport Hotel-a green certified hotel, a perfect place to host the event as my personal platform is “Teens Go Green.” I was real excited and I immediately emailed out flyers to everyone that I know and posted it on my website.” Elizabeth has spent numerous hours in writing sponsorship letters, making phone calls, recruiting contestants and planning all the details for the event from designing flyers to decorating of the stage.

Nationally renowned pageant coach Mona Eagle kicked off the event with a free and fun-filled pageant workshop to ease out the nerve of the first time pageant contestants. All guests and contestants were welcomed by a grand “Hollywood” entrance and pose for pictures on red carpet by professional photographer Bill Krautler. All contestants showed off their “miracle wear” outfits by modeling them on stage with upbeat music and introduced themselves to the judges and the audiences. The second part of the competition was my favorite party wear which showcased the poise and beauty of all the contestants. A special tribute was made this mothers’ day to all the mothers at the event by a “parade of beauties” – all the contestants and visiting royalties lined up to get on stage and presented carnations to their mothers while four times Miss Florida talent winner Erin Lancaster was performing ”The Greatest Love of All.” The adrenaline for

all the contestants and audiences went high as the crowning moment approached. Asian beauty Bernice Chau and Vicky Quach shined among the contestants and was crowned Little Miss Miracle and Sweet Miss Miracle respectively. Bernice Chau was also crowned as Miss Charity for her effort to raise the most money with her self designed CMN donation box. Other non-asian winners were Danielle Farmer (Miss Charity Princess), Madison Green (Tiny Miss Miracle), Layla Mohammadi (Preteen Miss Miracle), Holly Ploudre (Junior Miss Miracle) and Victoria Selesky (Teen Miss Miracle). Thank you for sponsors including John Robert Powers Orlando, Sheraton Suites Orlando Airport, Patsy’s magazine and others to make the event successful. Elizabeth was also thankful for her fantastic panel of judges Michelle Monet, Erin Lancaster, Madeline Sapp and Traci Pangonas. Together with volunteers Eppie
Bang, Laura Ticer, Taylor Ticer, Terri Sapp, Allegra Sincic, Daniel, Susan McDowell and Florida Sunshine Princess Katlyn McDowell, they have raised $3,072.00 cash and collected 263 stuffed animals, children’s books and DVDs with estimated value of $2,000.00 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Elizabeth has also been able to promote her personal platform “Teens Go Green” at the event by setting up recycle bins and delivering a “Go Green” speech to her audience. Her goal is to raise public awareness to protect our environment using the powers of teens. Elizabeth has been reaching out to other charity organizations and helped to raise funds at their events while promoting her “Go Green” platform. Currently, she is working on “Queens Go Green” fashion show and silent auction in June to raise more funds for Children’s Miracle Network. With the help from her 7 year old brother Brandon, she is also in the
process of collecting old cell phones for the upcoming CMN Phone recycling program. “I believe that today’s youth can have dreams. We can set our goals and achieve them by hard work and determination. Through volunteering, we can learn to appreciate our own lives and not to take everything for granted. Together, we can make the world a better place and have dreams fulfilled.” Elizabeth Tran is a fourteen year old eighth grade student president at Southwest Middle school and also the founder of “Teens Go Green Global.” She has received tremendous support from her family, her school, her teachers, her peers and she is ready to give back to the community at anytime. Elizabeth has also volunteered at many Asian fund raising events. For more information, please visit her website at www.teensgogreenglobal. com or email her at etran135@aol.com.

Commissioner Linda Stewart and the Brothers of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Inc at the University of Central Florida nationally recognized for community service with March of Dimes
By Ricky Ly http://tidetheory.blogspot.com
On March 1st 2009 the Brothers of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. walked for March of Dimes. This event was especially meaningful because it helped raise funds to bring awareness to one of their brothers who had a baby son, Parker Edward Chen, born 2 and a half premature and in intensive care at the hospital over 6 months. From getting newspaper coverage to hosting a range of great fundraising events, Pi Delta Psi was on fire down in Florida. The UCF chapter held a Taste of Asia event, getting foods donated representing all of Asia and collecting donations from students. They also set up a table in the main section of campus, in front of the Student Union, to collect donations.
34 June 2009 asiatrendmagazine.com
During the event, the brothers met Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart and spoke to her about the community. The brothers were recognized for their work nationally on the March of Dimes website: http://blog.marchforbabies.org/?p=550 Pi Delta Psi Fraternity was founded in 1994 to promote Academic Achievement, Cultural Awareness, Righteousness, and Friendship/ Loyalty in the community and among members. It was founded to unite the Asian American ethnicities in the form of brotherhood and to promote leadership in its members.
