The celebration was attended by about 250 members, VIPs,

We have a rich history of people from the Far East coming here, building this country and making it stronger with their diversity. So, it is with my great pleasure to present this proclamation from the City of Tampa,” said Tampa Councilman

It’s really about bringing people and cultures together…about bridging the gaps between the East and the West…and that’s what is so important.

We celebrate with everybody here,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner. As always this time of year, the Asia Fest crowd weathered the hot weather and enjoyed the live, free entertainment on stage. Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese food was available from vendors. Some visitors wore their native Asian or Pacific American costumes and brought parasols. First-time visitors came as far as Nepal, the Villages near Ocala and the Orlando area. Volunteers of the Asian American Coalition of Florida, a non- profit, plan and coordinate the annual festival. “The majority of the audience (this year) was non-Asian, and that’s our goal. That’s what we want, although we love to have Asian American participation. Since sharing our culture, educating the public about the real Asia, better under-

Springsteen also is the Asian Community Liason in Hillsborough County’s Office of Community Affairs. Springsteen, a Korean-American, says she also served on the IIFA Global Business Forum Planning Committee while planning Asia Fest, too. “Considering the other activities, especially the Bollywood events on the same day, a little less number of audience this year, which was different from last year, but we never really felt it. It certainly didn’t dampen our spirit. The fact that they preferred to come to our event is the quality audience we wanted. We accomplished our goal and I am really happy the way everything turned

The Master Academy students demonstrated their Tae Kwon Do skills in the grassy area in front of the Brighthouse Networks stage. Later in the program, the Mt. International Indian Film Academy brings “Bollywood Oscars” to Tampa The International Indian Film Academy showcased India’s film industry and stars in Tampa at the 15th Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend and Tata Motors IIFA Awards during April 23-26. For the first time, the “Bollywood Oscars” were held in the United States and Tampa. At the opening news conference, officials and community leaders looked back at the months of planning and effort to bring the IIFA awards here. “We’re happy that you’re here and to all the stars who are here, the actors, producers and the writers, we want you to think of Tampa as your second home. Because ultimately, this is not a four-day event, this is a multi-decade relationship. We’re going to build on this. We’re going to grow businesses as a result of this.....and as individuals, we will become friends,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “We have assembled the best and the brightest, this Wizcraft and IIFA team…..We’ve waited through every bump and bruise and we’ve gotten here. It’s a dream come true for me to see this. I knew it with my vision for Hillsborough County, Tampa, Tampa Bay to increase our presence on the international stage,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham. “There were many skeptics. There were many people who thought it couldn’t be pulled off, but it happened,” said Dr. Kiran Patel, IIFA co-host.

“I’ve had the opportunity to visit India a few times. The compassion, the culture, the energy of India is unbelievable… and you’re in the right city. So, we’re excited that you’re here,” said Florida Governor Rick Scott. “I’m equally from Tampa Bay….It’s been a wonderful, wonderful experience. Look at my heart, look at all our hearts and what can you see? That we love Tampa Bay and we will make this weekend an unforgettable, historical weekend you will cherish all your life,” said Actor Anil Kapoor, who was in the movie, “Slumdog Millionaire.” For 4 days, Tampa felt the glitz and glamour of “Bollywood.” Fans of India’s films waited to see their favorite stars at the downtown Hilton. Others paid hundreds of dollars for tickets to be with the celebrities at formal, green carpet events at the Tampa Convention Center, Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheater (“IIFA Magic of the Movies “– technical awards) and the prestigious awards show at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, April 26th. IIFA also premiered international actor Anupam Kher’s short film, “I went shopping for Robert De Niro.” Kher co-starred with De Niro in the Oscar- nominated film, “Silver Linings Playbook.” The IIFA Stomp opened the festival Wednesday night. More than 2,000 people attended the free, public event of India’s music, dances and

food at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa. The Stomp was the academy’s way to thank the Indian community and the Tampa Bay area for welcoming them. IIFA also brought the largest group of Indian and international stars ever assembled to Tampa. Actors and celebrities Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Tampa’s DJ Ravi Drums, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) and John Travolta attended. On Saturday, Spacey led a master class on acting and danced on stage at the evening awards at Raymond James Stadium. “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” won Best Film, Best Director, Best Male Performance in a Leading Role, Best Female Performance in a Supporting Role and Best Story awards. Farhan Akhtar won best actor for his role in the movie. Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor hosted the awards. Deepika Padukone won the best actress award for her role in the film, “Chennai Express.” John Travolta was awarded for “Outstanding Contribution to International Cinema.” “I am honored and humbled to be put in this category. I believe that as human beings, we are alike and this is a medium to celebrate our similarities. A heartfelt thank you to IIFA and the Indian film community,” said Travolta.

TransPac Students

Celebrate Traditional Duanwu Festival Observed during the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival is a popular celebration that has existed for millennia in China. TransPac Aviation Academy student pilots held their own version this year, engaging students to design their own boats and then race them on the day of the celebration.

Qu Yuan took his own life after finishing his last masterpiece, stating that he would rather die than see his country conquered by the opposing political party. The fisherman sailed down the river in their boats looking for Qu Yuan’s body and paying him tribute. The festival commemorates this act of patriotism and recognizes Chinese history.

The Festival has existed in China for over 2000 years as a way to celebrate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is remembered for being a great statesman, ideologist, diplomat and reformer in ancient China. According to the legend,

TransPac Director of Customer Relations and Student Services Sue Kaiser learned about the festival and wanted to bring the event to TransPac. Students at TransPac had the opportunity to create their own boats and race them before

1,600 papier-mâché pandas to nest around Hong Kong in June Tour will make a stop in Hong Kong, with the eponymous number of pandas squatting firmly across ten landmarks within the island. These pandas represent the actual number of pandas left in the world. The 30cm recycled bears were commissioned by the World Wide Fund to commemorate the fact, and to promote conservation and sustainable development. Four new papier-mâché pandas will be

created for the Hong Kong stop, Travelers Today added. The pandas previously tumbled in France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, among other countries, and stopped in Taiwan previously for its Asian tour. The Hong Kong International Airport, Tian Tan Buddha, Tsing Ma Bridge, Shatin Racecourse, Victoria Park, and Ocean Park are some of the sites where the pandas will nest in June.

Artist Paulo Grangeon is raising awareness for the conservation of endangered species by sculpting 1600 panda bears out of recycled materials and papier-mâché! The sculptures will brighten days of passersby in ten locations across Hong Kong during the month of June. Grangeon’s project seeks to bolster the government’s “Conserving Central” initiative by using the adorable pandas as unofficial mascots. Mapo Tofu

 By Helen & Lisa Tse

Many people say tofu is bland, rubbery, and unappealing, but unappealing, but on the positive side, it is exceptionally nutritious. In this recipe, I have combines it with pork and chiles to appeal to a wider audience, making this a good introduction to tofu if you have never tasted it before. The word mapo is used to describe a person disfigured by smallpox. The story behind this tofu dish is that it was named after a pock-marked old lady from Szechuan who was also a skillful cook.

METHOD Heat a wok on high heat and add the oil. Put in the ginger and pork and stir-fry continuously over high heat until the pork is almost cooked. This takes approx. 10 minutes. Add the chile bean sauce and stir well to combine. Pour in the chicken stock and stir again. Nestle the pieces of tofu in the sauce and carefully spoon some of the sauce over the top to keep them moist; don’t overmix the dish at this stage or you will break up the tofu. Season with salt, sugar, Shaoxing wine, and sesame oil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 2 minutes until the sauce has reduced by half. To serve, spoon the tofu and sauce into a deep bowl, garnish with the scallion, and accompany with jasmine rice Sweet Mandarin: Classic & Contemporary Chinese Recipes with Gluten and Dairy-Free Variations Publisher: Kyle Books ISBN-10: 1909487074 ISBN-13: 978-1909487079

Use gluten-free chile sauce rather than chile bean paste Dairy free Egg free Serves 2 Preparation time 10 minutes Cooking time 15 minutes 1 tablespoon vegetable oil ½-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 7oz ground pork 1 teaspoon chile bean sauce 1 cup chicken stock 5 oz form tofu, cut into 1-inch cubes

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar ½ teaspoon Shaoxing rice wine ½ teaspoon sesame oil 1 scallion, finely chopped, to garnish

*Lisa’s tips Add chile oil if you want to make this dish hotter – the tofu will really absorb the flavor of the chile to pack a punch.

We worked to raise money, pushed during our practices and pulled together toward a cause that was near and dear to our hearts. It was this day that has stayed with me and the reason why we have continued to race since that day. 2. What separates your team from the rest? We are full of heart. We pull together like no other. The Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival this past October. We dedicated that race to 4 women near and dear to our hearts who were all going through their own struggle with cancer. We raised over $22,000 in their honor and we raced our hearts out. We did not win, but we all came away with so much pride from achieving our goal and giving our SWEAT, blood and tears to those 4 women. It was truly the best ever. 4. What is the team/club’s best racing time? 2:20 at the Roosevelt Regatta in Tampa this past weekend. We are still a newer boat and I am so proud of how we fight together for the win. We will get it!! 5. Which events are you attending in 2014? The Roosevelt Regatta, The Space Coast Dragon Boat Festival, Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boast Festival 6. What do you love most about the sport? The camaraderie we share on our boat and the fact that, even though we only have a dozen or so practices under our belt, we never have had a complete boat for practices, but everyone gives their heart and soul the moment they step on that boat. We race with our hearts, mind and muscle. We are warriors and we get to show that on the water each and every time. I couldn’t do it without the team. We are ONE for those 2 minutes and it is a beautiful thing to see and hear. 7. How do you get pumped up on race day? We don’t really have a routine. I tell my people what’s expected of them and we just go out and do it. No complaining. No excuses. It’s how we roll each day and we take who we are off of the water and just show up each and every time.

Our team was formed on September 22, 2012 and I remember that day distinctly. I committed to having a boat for the Walgreens DB festival and racing for Breast Cancer without having one single paddler other than myself. The event was only 4 weeks away and I needed to secure a team, find a time for us to practice, raise money for breast cancer and pull it off in only 4 weeks time. Our team name is SWEAT, which is the name of my personal training studio. Our motto is Commitment. Effort. Sacrifice. And my people did just that. In a matter of days, we had people committed for the boat. We started fundraising

We see each other daily for our workout beatings at SWEAT in College Park. We are a family and we support each other through anything. My mission of racing one time for a great cause has become 20 other people’s mission and I think that is a true bond that can’t be broken.
