The Tampa Bay area celebrated the 30th anniversary of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, with Asia Fest. In 1979, it was only a week-long celebration in May. After Congress passed a law in 1990, the entire month of May is designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month every year.
Boston, Asia Fest organizers planned to make this event more safe.
“I hereby proclaim April 27, 2013...From whatever country you’re from, this day is for you,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, holding up the proclamation plaque. Dr. Kimi Springsteen, the festival’s founder and chairwoman of the Asian American Coalition of Florida, also welcomed visitors to the community celebration.
“I think with the presence of Tampa Police and security here, we trust them. You can see everyone is having a good time. This is a family event and everyone is safe together,” said Sokha Im, Asia Fest’s Executive Director.
Tampa Police estimated 8 thousand people came downtown to Cotanchobee Park in the Channelside District for Asia Fest and the Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races. With this year’s festival just 12 days after the bombings in

“After 911, we’re always on heightened alert. That was reinforced with the tragic events in Boston. We take precautions. The public doesn’t always know about it, but we really make sure these events are safe,” said Mayor Buckhorn.
While Hillsborough County Sheriff Office boats patrolled Seddon Channel and Harbour Island, undercover and uniformed police officers strolled through the crowd, who gathered to see the colorful cultural performances on stage and taste the different Asian food from local restaurant vendors. 16 Asian countries were represent-
ed with Nepal and Indonesia joining the festival this year. Miss Taiwan was crowned Miss Asia Fest 2013. “We have a lot more performers and participants who are outstanding, vendors who have come back and new vendors who have signed up with us. So, we’re really excited.” said Im. Joey Omila emceed the entertainment--everything from a Three Drum Dance, Shaolin Kung Fu to the Tae Kwon Do “Gangman Style” finale. Carol Lim is a contributor to CNN.com iReport, blogger and volunteer weather watcher for WFLA-TV (NBC) in Tampa, Florida. She is a University of South Florida graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications/Broadcast News. Carol also is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.

WHAT IS MILLS 50? MILLS 50 is one of eight (8) Main Street Districts in the City of Orlando. It is a non profit entity, aimed at improving the awareness, aesthetics and viability of the District. Partial funding is provided by the City of Orlando with the remainder of funding raised through small business and residential memberships as well as special events. Mills 50 is governed by a Board of Directors. The District boundaries are Summerlin to Bumby on Colonial; E. Amelia to Princeton on Mills and Mills to Haven Drive on Virginia. HOW THE MAIN STREET APPROACH WORKS The four point approach works to create a total image for the community: providing
the retail/professional area with its necessary market niche, creating a cohesive visual identity unique to the district, and nurturing a cultural ambiance associated with the district’s location, appearance and way of life. This approach gradually builds on existing resources and fosters improved district leadership and support for long term benefits.
new businesses. Business Development means strengthening and diversifying the existing economic base of the district. We are looking for volunteers to serve on each of these committees! Won’t you become involved in Mills 50?
THE FOUR POINTS Organization is the building of consensus and cooperation between groups that play a role in the district. Design involves improving the district’s image by improving its physical appearance. Promotion involves marketing the district’s unique characteristics to residents, investors,
MILLS 50 URBAN ART MUSEUM Mills 50 – the intersection of creativity + culture – is becoming more and more well known for its art – whether it be art boxes, wall murals or paintings along the Urban Trail. And now, Mills 50 will embark on yet another art project! The Mills50 Urban Art Museum is a concept that developed through numerous design studios and the work performed by Process Architecture, one of Mills 50’s corporate members. The idea is simple! Where do you put an art museum in a densely populated commercial district when no funds exist for a structure let alone art? The answer is anywhere you can. The Mills50 Urban Art Museum is not a building but an urban network of commissioned art pieces that will be installed in select areas to restore blighted structures, reduce pollution, deviant activity, increase the attractiveness of the district and promote organized urban art.
16
ASIA TREND
The first installation will occur at the congruence of 932 and 934 North Mills Avenue. The blight is a 9″ interstitial space that occurs between the two buildings and becomes a dumpster and catchall for unwanted items, including but not limited to 40 ounce bottles, switchblades and fast food wrappers. Fundraising has begun for the creation and installation of the first public art piece. The funds raised will be used to purchase materials (sheet aluminum, conduit, paint and light fixtures) and pay for any permits and subcontracted services required for an urban public art installation. The artist, Marcos Cruz, and the organizers, Process Architecture and Mills 50, have agreed to donate all hours related to the design, fabrication and install of the art piece. If you wish to donate to the Mills 50 Urban Art Museum, please e-mail Joanne Grant, Executive Director, at: director@mills50.org. Any and all donations are accepted and greatly appreciated.

As Sifu Sam Winters and group watches, Lily Wang, Co-Founder of Meimen America, demonstrates “Pingshuai”, which means “level-arm-swing”.
World Tai Chi & Qigong Day in Kissimmee, Florida The last Saturday in April marks the day where people across the world at 10:00 am “play Tai Chi and Qigong” with the sole purpose of using that “Qi” energy to heal the world. Sifu Sam Winters, of the Hsin Yung-I Chuan School of Tai Chi and Meimen Qigong, has organized this event in Orlando for the past 6 years. This year I chose a new location in Kissimmee-at a soon to be opened Westgate Flea Market. Johnson Young, “Advisor” of Meimen USA Orlando, FL, graciously donated the chairs and tables and the back of Building B parking lot to accommodate this event, which I am truly thankful for. A special Thank You to Joe and Lily Wang, Founder and Co-Founder of Meimen USA, Orlando, FL., who showed everyone in the group a qigong exercise they learned in Taiwan from Master Lee Feng-San (Founder of the Meimen Qigong Center) called “Pingshuai”, which means “level-arm-swing”. A simple and effective technique which energizes your body and brings the “Qi” to your fingertips. This makes Tai Chi a lot easier to do since you can feel the energy.

Now all you just have to do is move the “ball of energy” into different positions. It was just about time to start and everyone found their places. At 10:00 am, “The Event” began where everyone started doing their “forms” and Qigong. I noticed out of the corner of my eye a majority doing “short forms” and after 10 minutes, finished. The group then started following my “long-form”, which took an additional 10 minutes to complete. This shows the “true spirit” of Tai Chi players, which is to breathe, relax and everything will fall into place. Once the group finished, we all sat down to a wonderful pot-luck meal and drink setup. Everyone shared what they brought and how they felt during “the experience”. We gave a brief explanation about the history of Tai Chi and Qigong, and the tremendous health benefits it has to anyone who practices it. The organizer began doing some “friendship demonstrations”, which included Earth Style Tai Chi/Qigong, Meimen Chan-Mei-Door Taiji, and Yang style straight sword and Chen
style broad sword. Once finished, other teachers joined in. Madame Jeannie Wu lead the group with Yang style 24 short form. Don Moore demonstrated the Tai Chi applications and defense techniques used in “push hands”. Olga Guzman, who studied under Dr. Paul Lam, demonstrated “Sun-Style Tai Chi”. I personally want to thank all the teachers who “shared” and showed the commitment and dedication it takes to reach higher levels of expertise in this “hidden internal martial art”! China Launches 15-day Manned Space Mission Compiled by Asia Trend
China successfully launched its fifth manned spacecraft on Jun 11 afternoon, sending three astronauts on the country’s longest space trip. Chinese President Xi Jinping extended good wishes to the three astronauts, “The mission’s crew members carry a space dream of the Chinese nation, and represent the lofty aspirations of the Chinese people to explore space.” In its 15 days journey, Shenzhou-10 will dock with the orbiting space lab Tiangong-1 twice, once through automatic operation and the other manual, and a lecture will for the first time be given on board the assembled orbiter to a group of teenage students on the ground. The three astronauts on board, including 48-year-old Nie is commander of this mission, and responsible for the manual docking operation with the Tiangong-1 target orbiter. Zhang Xiaoguang, 47, will assist the commander to accomplish the spacecraft’s manual docking with Tiangong-1. Another job that Zhang will be doing in space is to film Wang’s lecture lecture, which will be broadcast to middle and el-
ementary school students in China. Wang, 33, is the second Chinese female astronaut after Liu Yang in the Shenzhou-9 mission, which blasted off in June last year. Wang will be responsible for monitoring the conditions of the spacecraft, space experiments, operation of equipment and taking care of fellow crew members.

The Japanese Sword Museum Compiled by Asia Trend 刀剣博物館 The Japanese Sword (Token) Museum specializes in Japanese swords. Since the introduction of sword-making techniques from the Asian Continent, Japanese swords have been improved throughout Japans long history of warfare. They were not only traditional weapons but also sometimes regarded as an object of faith or a symbol of power. The Japanese Sword Museum collects and preserves 152 items, including swords such as the ones designated as National Treasures made by Nobuyoshi, Kuniyuki (Rai) and Kuniyuki (Taima), sword fittings, armor, and documents of metal working. Usually, exhibitions such as the “Koto (old sword) and Shinto (new sword) Exhibition” are held and the works of famous swordsmiths from the Heian to Edo Periods (782-1867) are on display. The Archives Room houses about 1,500 historical documents and archives on swords.’
