The Asian Cultural Expo and Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival takes places in a new venue By Katherine Ragamat The 5th Annual Asian Cultural Expo and 8th Annual Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival found a new home in Turkey Lake at Bill Frederick Park, on Saturday, October 18. Previously held at Downtown Disney, both events boasted an array of attendees from all across Florida as well as areas around the world. Performers and dragon boat teams traveled from many places such as Canada and Thailand. In the Dragon Boat Festival, many teams competed throughout the day. For REACH Dragon Boat team co-captain, William Tang, racing in a new area did not faze the team’s performance. “To be honest, the lake itself did not matter too much, it’s whether or not the weather is good,” said Tang, a 17-year-old senior at Winter Park High School. REACH won first place in the Division C Consolation Final. For the 5th Annual Asian Cultural Expo,

performers showcased a plethora of different cultures through outlets such as dance, music, martial arts and even cheer performances. Amazing Thailand, a cheerleading team from Bangkok University in Thailand, performed their award-winning routine during the Expo. The team’s sponsor, Wirat Cortez, was most excited for audience members to witness their performance. “The team did a beautiful job,” said Cortez. “People can enjoy this without having to fly all the way to Thailand!” she joked. Amazing Thailand received the first place ranking in the 2014 Cheerleadings Worlds competition. Many of the performers from the previous years came to display their cultural performances at the new venue. Orlando Taiko Dojo, who has performed at every Expo, returned with traditional Japanese taiko drumming as well as original songs. “It’s the first time we’ve been at this park. It’s a lot bigger,” said taiko instructor Jason
Seymour. “The whole atmosphere is really positive. I love it!” The Expo was an exciting event for Dance Troupe of the Filipino Student Association at the University of Central Florida. “It’s nice to see other cultures from different countries,” said Janine Beagle, Dance Troupe co-coordinator. FSA at UCF performed traditional Filipino dance, binisuan and tinikling. They also held a dance workshop, teaching audience members basic dance moves from tinikling. The location was not the only new thing about the Asian Cultural Expo. Asia Trend presented its first annual Asian Trendition, a dance competition that allowed participants to mix their cultural dances with a unique style. The winners were decided through fan participation. After each group performed, the audience texted in their votes for their favorite performers. The team with the most votes won the prize of $200,000. The first place prize went to PAPO, a six-

Janger, a Balinese dance troupe, received second place while Kalena’s Polynesian ‘Ohana took the third place title. Nissin CUP NOODLE -Vol. 2
日清 カップヌードル
{Taste of Asia} By Teri Mitchell
World famous popular instant noodles from Japan Cup Noodle was developed by Momofuku Ando 安藤 百福 who is the founder of Nissin Food Products 日清食 品, an entrepreneur and an inventor. He developed the
world’s very first instant noodles ‘Chicken Ramen’ and the very first cup noodles ‘Cup Noodle’. He brought a big revolution to food culture in Japan and in the world. He never retired until he passed away at the age 96 (in 2007). The secret of his longevity and health were “playing golf twice a week and eating Chicken Ramen lunch every day”, said Momofuku. With Japan still suffering from a shortage of food in the post-war era, Momofuku was inspired to invent easy, quick nutritious nonperishable food. The trend convinced him that “peace will come to the world when all its people have enough to eat.”
2014 U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori honored on ‘Cup Noodle’
To honor Nishikori’s run to the final, Nissin released special limited edition of Cup Noodle featuring Nishikori on the packaging in September in Japan. Nishikori has graced the cups (Seafood Noodle) in 2012 as well.

Teaching in China
By Ricky Ly, Founder of TastyChomps.com
By Michael Cho
- An Eye-Opening Experience of China on the Rise Michael Cho is a Chinese American, Cantonese to be specific, raised in South America for 10 years. This past summer, he had the opportunity to travel to China as part of a teaching program to teach English to school children in China. He is the co-founder of Impress Ink (www.impressink. com) and a former president of the UCF Chinese American Student Association. He serves on the Asia Trend Community Learning Center’s Youth Advisory Board. How did you find out about this program? What are the requirements? How long is the stay and how much are you paid?

I took some time to do some solid research. I reached out to Chinese Cultural and Education Center (CCEC) (http://www.ccecbridge.org/) based in Spartanburg, South Carolina and they offered me a 1 month all expense paid program over the month of July 2014. You basically need to have a bachelor’s degree, teaching experience and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification) is strongly suggested. It was a month long program split into two separate summer “camps” for public school Chinese Students. This program was specifically an American Cultural enrichment and English pro-
gram. It gave me great insight about the fact that Chinese Youth love American Culture. In China, the people are very open to learning about the cultural side of America, but it’s the political side that’s sensitive. The one month long program is non-paid but all expenses including airfare, food, lodging and even touring is included. Do you encourage others to try this program out? I truly believe it’s a must-do experience for young professionals. You really immerse yourself in another culture and you have a responsibility to motivate and educate them.

in every meal, vegetables, meat is usually the smallest portion. All the students in the morning would either eat Man Tou (wheat buns) or drink Rice Porridge, that’s probably why most are very skinny.
All the students felt privileged to be taught by a foreigner, but you being a teacher yourself - it’s a privilege to be able to influence the youth of another nation. It’s certainly a different experience than backpacking or traveling, because I believe you don’t get to immerse yourself within the deep fabric of the culture and enact real cultural exchange. Personally as a Chinese American, I know that I will never live in the land that I came from, but by being able to give back just that much is a very rewarding experience. What are some things you learned about China when you were there? Chinese Youth have one of the most rigid academic schedules, some students go to school from 7am to 7pm and then they have about 5 hours of homework after school. Many of my students loved sports but due to the academic standards, making time for it was very difficult. Everyone loves American Culture whether it’s the music, movies, actors or athletes. They know Jeremy Lin..it is a sign of pride, but in terms of idols everyone knows Kobe or Lebron James. They don’t have to many role models in China. many students look up to foreigners. That’s maybe a reason the students were felt very privileged to have me as an Asian American Teacher (I was the only Asian American in our group). We could relate although my culture was still different from theirs. Although I got a chance to see the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City in Beijing, temples and all those majestic sights, being able to interact and learn from the people for 30 straight days
was the best experience I had. What impressed you most about the school children and what surprised you the most? Their motivations, influences and interests and curiosities are very similar to American People - they are very respectful, they regard teachers almost as a second parent. When I asked my class of 35 students what they wanted to be when they grew up, over 70% answered: teacher. They are very generous also - I had to buy another piece of luggage just for the gifts I received. What do you think students in China need today? Curriculum in Chinese Education is very stringent, it’s focused towards passing exams. We are not the only country that has the “assessment test” dilemma. I think they need room to be creative, opportunities to take initiative and be able to express themselves in things they are passionate about. I think this will improve the Chinese culture in terms of the Arts, Sports and everything in between.
I was privileged to eat all types of food from Hebei Province which is very different from what we eat here in American which mostly consists of southern, Cantonese style dishes. The favorite thing I ate is a popular street food called Lu Ruo Huo Shao, Donkey Pancake. Yes, donkey meat sliced between two crispy Chinese pancakes, a similar texture to a dense croissant. It was delicious and I think all the American Teachers liked it. What are some things that you noticed about changes in China or things you were most surprised about? Construction is in every corner. There will always be a crane in sight. A small city in China, is over 1 million people. Everyone lives in an apartment for the most part, The sou. Night markets are very fun, sometimes about 1 mile long filled with inexpensive food and shopping goods. Everything is big in China whether is a shopping mall, supermarket or restaurant. The last time I went to china was in 2005, the difference is tremendous and wealth is everywhere. China is definitely moving ahead.

How to Alleviate Knee Pain Acupressure DIY at Home: Knee pain is characterized by pain, swelling, or stiffness
and can be caused by an array of different things such as ruptured ligament or torn cartilage from a sudden acute injury, injury from overuse, old age, or other underlying conditions such as arthritis.
Knee pain from overuse is often characterized by pain when the knee is in extension, but sometimes the pain may even be behind the popliteal fossa, traveling along the calf down to the heel. For knee sprain injury resulting from exercise or sports, the injury and pain will more frequently be on the medial side of the knee. There may be functional limitation on the range of motion of the knee’s extension and flexion, or sudden sharp pain with a “locked knee”. If any of the above symptoms occur, then it is indicative that an injury has already occurred, and is advised to see a medical professional as soon as possible. Knee pain due to degenerative arthritis will experience more pain when walking down steps or stairs. The swelling and deformation of the knee will cause major difficulty in sitting, getting up out of a chair, squatting, and noticeable stiffness in the mornings. No matter the cause, if your pain is severe, persistent, or is hindering your ability to walk and function comfortably, it is crucial to seek medical help and get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan before attempting any self-help or maintenance at home!

The Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association Celebrates 5 Year-Anniversary By Christine Malamanig Berk/GOAABA
The Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association (GOAABA) recently celebrated five years as a voluntary bar association at a 5-year celebration event held October 22, 2014 at 310 Lakeside Restaurant in Downtown Orlando. About 50 attendees participated in the happy hour event recognizing the initial charter mem-
bers, membership growth, contributions to the local community, and support of its guests, including many of GOAABA’s founding Charter Members, local judges, and sponsors. Current GOAABA President Wanda Reas recognized and introduced GOAABA’s Charter Members: Agnes Chau, M. Delton Chen, Min

Many local judges have supported GOAABA over the years. Among those in attendance included the following members of the judiciary: Judge Steve Jewett, Judge Thomas Turner, Judge John Kest, Judge Sally Kest, Judge Kenneth Barlow, Judge Greg Tynan, and Judge Janet Thorpe. GOAABA appreciates the support of its members and guests, including special guests and sponsors in attendance representing Authentic Web Inc., Asia Trend Magazine, and 310 Lakeside. GOAABA is a voluntary bar organization incorporated on October 19, 2009 to represent the interests of the Asian community, serve as a legal bridge between the various Asian communities, and promote the professional growth of its members in the Greater Orlando area. The genesis of GOAABA began several years ago, when attorneys Jessica Hew and Stephen Chong discussed the idea and the need for Or-

lando’s first-ever Asian American bar association. Other attorneys, including Sunny Hillary, Glenn Leong and Kim Nguyen, similarly raised the idea. In March, 2009, Glenn Leong called up an informal planning meeting with Jessica Hew, Kim Nguyen and Sunny Hillary at Dexter’s in Winter Park. This Planning Committee identified unmet legal needs within the many and diverse Asian American communities and discussed obstacles, including language barriers, cultural wariness, and other impediments to full legal assistance and access to the courts. The Committee noted the existence of the Hispanic Bar Association, serving Hispanic attorneys in Central Florida, and the Paul C. Perkins Bar Association, serving African-American attorneys in Central Florida. But no voice or organization unified Orlando’s growing Asian American legal community. After much research, GOAABA developed an email distribution list of over 40 (and still growing) potential interested parties. The first organi-
zational meeting was held on May 19, 2009, at the Orlando law offices of Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A., where 15 members participated. GOAABA has an Affiliation Agreement with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and is the fourth affiliated chapter in Florida. (The other three chapters are located in Miami/South Florida, Tampa and Jacksonville.) However, GOAABA is completely autonomous and serves our local community. For more information regarding GOAABA, including membership and its activities and events, please visit the GOAABA website at www.goaaba.org or its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GreaterOrlandoAsianAmericanBarAssociationgoaaba. AACC Serves up Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House “Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children – a long time to be away, or to divide a family. And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House is that “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost.”

Behind The Threads: CASA at UCF Students Hold Candlelight Vigil in support of Hong Kong In this edition of Behind The Threads, a group of UCF students got together to create an initiative to solely support the people of another country. Their main form of unity and medium would be a t-shirt. On October 16th, 2014 the Chinese American Student Association at UCF held a rally to raise awareness to the recent events in Hong Kong. For the past few days, tens of thousands of protesters have been protesting on the streets of Hong Kong to fight for democracy, shielding themselves from tear gas and pepper spray with surgical masks, goggles and umbrellas.
28
ASIA TREND
The reason for their protests is because of China’s decision to renege on allowing Hong Kong citizens to be able to elect their own head official, the chief executive, democratically in 2017. China said that the elected chief executive would have to be approved by a Beijing-loyal committee. Boy Kong, a local Orlando Artist created the design that was screen printed by Impress Ink. This whole series of events is regarded as the “Umbrella Revolution” therefore an umbrella design was created with the image of the Foo Dog (Chinese Lion Dog), an ancient mythical Chinese animal that repre-
sents peace and fierceness. “Coming together and supporting the people of Hong Kong will at least give them more hope” said Mike Cho, partner of Impress Ink. Austin Le, President of CASA at UCF started this initiative and approached Impress Ink and Boy Kong to brainstorm and produce a meaningful t-shirt design. Whether is an act of unity or support, t-shirts have served as great wearable tools to promote a unified message. There’s always a story behind a tshirt design, there’s more to see behind the threads.

USA International Badminton Tournament Lives Up to Its Name Best in the World Showcase their Skills in Orlando The Yonex USA International 2014 Badminton Tournament was held this last week and proved that it was well named. When the tournament organizers decided to name the tournament who knew they could be so prophetic. In 2013 the tournament results were dominated by the USA as they won four of the five gold medals. This year however the international part of the name ruled. The tournament attracted 140 athletes from 26 countries. Players from as far away as India, Austria and Brazil all came to the ClearOne Sports Centre to compete for $15,000 in prize money and the ranking points that will help them qualify for to the 2016 Olympics. The international players dominated the results. Players from Japan captured gold medals in Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles. Sweden won the Men’s Singles title and Canada for the second year running captured gold in Mixed Doubles. The only player to repeat a gold medal result was Toby Ng who partner with Alex Bruce (both players competed in the last London Olympics) from Canada to win the Mixed Doubles.
Tournament Co-Chair Robert Wilson stated, “The fans were treated to an incredibly high standard of play the entire week. I was happy to see so many first time fans to badminton have an opportunity to witness such high caliber play. The players were eager to perform here in Orlando and many have expressed the desire to return next year.” Our major sponsors Fashion Square Mall and Aston Martin in Orlando were very excited to hear that the event will once again be held next years. Mr. Wilson anticipates that they will once again see a significant increase in player participation with upwards of 200 players expected next year. The exact time for the event will be posted on the events website www.USAinternationalBadminton.com within the week. All tournament results can be found there as well.
