It’s All About Children

 By Nina Yon

but needed to understand. He told me that while I might be eager to volunteer, it was more important to make sure that my skills fit the organization and the needs of the people I would serve. I should observe, learn, and wait for the moment that God feels is right for me.

Nina Yon (L) and the Executive Director Wayne Wiley (R) and the Staff from Salud y Paz

Later I found myself with only Q20 ($3) left to buy food for the next two days, and missing the spiritual support of my church, friends, and family so far away. As I walked toward my volunteer site, I saw the face of a friend I hadn’t yet met: Dr. Plunk! I couldn’t resist the opportunity to thank the man who had ignited my enthusiasm and passion to work in Guatemala. When he heard about some of the challenges I faced, he generously offered me Q50 for lunch. At first I refused, but eventually I accepted when he said that in return for the Q50, I could write a testimonial for him. I am pleased to finally have the chance to do that today. Thank you, Dr. Plunk, not just for lunch, but for feeding my spirit and inspiring my mission.

Calvary Assembly

Last year I was a corporate executive blessed with a great life, but I felt called to do something more. I had been on mission trips before, but found a week was not enough time to really connect with the people I worked with. So I made the big decision to leave everything behind, move to Guatemala, and follow my calling. This newsletter introduces you to three of the groups I worked with in 2012. An upcoming newsletter will focus on the groups I worked with in the first half of 2013. It was truly an honor to work side-by-side with people who are doing such incredible things to help Guatemalan children and families. After every mission in these harsh environments, I always walk away feeling so humbled knowing that I have so much to be thankful for. I hope you will enjoy reading about the groups I’ve worked with and the lessons I have learned along the way. I am so excited to

share my journey with you!

Salud y Paz When I was first called to serve, I applied to and completed the General Board of Global Ministries United Methodist Volunteer in Mission training. Then came the hard part: waiting to be placed in a mission. My enthusiasm ran so high, I spent hours online exploring possible ways to serve. I felt most drawn to Salud y Paz (Health and Peace), which provides medical, dental, and surgical clinics as well as ongoing health education in the Lake Atitlan region. I watched the online video of their founder, Dr. Phil Plunk, countless times, captivated by his faith and vision.

A medical team supported by Calvary Assembly traveled to Guatemala in 2012 to conduct clinics in remote villages with no access to healthcare. Villagers traveled long distances by bus or on foot, then waited patiently for treatment for problems they had endured for months or even years. Despite the long, difficult trip, many dressed in their Sunday-best clothing to show respect for the doctors and nurses. During one clinic, I noticed a tiny, elderly woman waiting for the doctor. She wore a dress covered in intricate embroidery but had no shoes. Although she spoke only her indigenous

When I couldn’t wait a moment longer, I contacted Wayne Wiley, the executive director of Salud y Paz in Guatemala, and offered my help. Wayne took me under his wing, gently guiding me with lessons I didn’t necessarily want to hear,

lung infections, emphysema, and even death.

language, she gave me a kind nod as I took her blood pressure. We’d been asked not to give people money, but I wished I could do more to help her. Later, at evening devotions, one of the nurses said she had offered the woman her own shoes but they were too large, so she gave the woman her socks. I thought, “My feet are small – why didn’t I think of giving her my shoes?” It reminded me that we always have something to give, from our hearts or even the shoes from our feet. That lesson has remained with me. Next time, I will give more of myself.

Mission Guatemala Mission Guatemala operates medical & dental clinics, preschool nutrition programs, feeding centers, and community aid in the Guatemala department of Sololá. One of their current projects is installing clean, efficient, wood-burning stoves for extremely impoverished families. In rural Guatemala, many families cook over wood fires right inside their houses. The children and parents breathe the smoke every day, running the risk of

Mission Guatemala gave me the chance to work in a rural village installing stoves with a combined group of Methodist and Lutheran volunteers from Indiana. While helping to install a stove for one family, I heard their two children, Isabela and Oscar, tossing a ball outside. I stopped to play with them only to realize that the “ball” they’d been tossing was just a dried avocado pit. These children were so poor that their only toy was a discarded seed. Every time I think of Isabela and Oscar, it reminds me how blessed we are and how we should appreciate what we have the way these children appreciate the simple pleasures that can be derived from the pit of an avocado.

It’s All About Children Matthew 18:5 says, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name, welcomes me.” Every day I am grateful to the people who have helped me, both financially and spiritually, to reach out to the people of Guatemala. The children and families are ultimately the reason for our work. I hope you will join me in praying for a brighter future for these beautiful souls. Although I miss all of you terribly, this year has been so fulfilling that I have decided to stay in Guatemala another year to continue my mission work. To learn more about the nonprofit groups I’ve worked with, provide financial or spiritual support for my journey, or simply let me know your thoughts, please write to me atninaonamission@gmail.com.

San Francisco Chinatown Merchants Association

Presents 23rd Annual Mid-Autumn Festival Celebrations On September 14-15, 2013, the San Francisco Chinatown Merchants Association presented its annual Autumn Moon Festival, otherwise known as the Mid-Autumn Festival. A Chinatown tradition since 1991, this festival celebrates a significant part of Chinese holiday tradition that has been thriving for hundreds of years. The festival began on a Saturday morning, precisely at 11 a.m. A parade of acrobatic lion dancers, as well as a large team of dragon dancers, made its way down the main street of Chinatown, starting from the iconic, green-tiled gateway. Following them were representatives of AT&T, who hosted this year’s festival, and performers dressed in traditional Chinese clothes of all colors. Latecomers to the festival were still able to catch the hourly mini-parades led by girls in elaborate Chinese dresses and headpieces, all decorated in bright red and gold in honor of the celebrations.

Street vendors were lined-up across Chinatown, selling a range of goods from Chinese paper lanterns and lucky red envelopes to gyros and chow mein. In celebration of the Autumn Moon, dozens of vendors also sold mooncakes of all flavors. Many also gave visitors a chance to win “freebies” and gift bags, or provided free walk-in examinations by Chinese acupuncturists and herbalists. One particular vendor had a chef making traditional Chinese “dragon-beard candy” on display. The first throngs of visitors were welcomed by Mistresses of Ceremony, Anita Cheung and Rose Chung, who introduced the first set of performers on the main stage. The Yau Kung Moon Lion and Martial Arts Group opened up with various kung fu and weapon demonstrations, as well as a traditional lion dance. The Jiten Daiko Japanese Taiko ensemble, performing live at the festival for the

first time, followed with a riveting and upbeat Taiko drum performance. Other performers included the Flying Angels Dance Group, performing a repertoire that included Chinese fan and ribbon dances, as well as the Wild Card Belly Dancers and a guzheng group performance, whose members were trained by the well-known guzheng performer, Winnie Wong. The Autumn Moon Festival further lit up an already vivid and vivacious Chinatown, which is filled with crowds of tourists and locals alike daily. Together, they form an active community that educates newer generations on aspects of Chinese culture and fosters this rich tradition abroad. More information on the Autumn Moon Festival celebrations and the history of the San Francisco Chinatown is available at www.sanfranciscochinatown.com.  By Tracey Fung

Orlando “Cops and Kids” Dragon Boat Team

Brings Home the Gold from International Festival in Toronto gold-medal finish at 2:25.”

Orlando, FL -- The Dueling Dragons of Orlando Dragon Boat Racing Team (aka “Cops and Kids”) raced to a personal best and earned a gold medal in the Premier mixed round one of the GWN Dragon Boat Challenge Festival in Toronto Canada this past weekend. The team is an unlikely partnership between at-risk teens and Orlando Police Department officers who joined together to become a one-of-a-kind, competitive racing team. The team has attracted international attention in just a short time which sparked the invitation to participate at the festival alongside 200 teams from around the world.

The youth who traveled to Toronto as part of the team come from the City of Orlando’s Operation Positive Direction, Parramore Kidz Zone and the Orlando Parks and Recreation Department, and they earned their spots on the team by staying active in school, attending practice regularly, maintaining good behavior/no arrests, mastering the technical skills required for the sport, maintaining a healthy state of physical fitness and developing respectful, positive relationships with all team members, coaches and mentors. For many, this was their first trip ever on a plane or even away from Orlando. When asked what he’d say to the donors, 15 y.o. Brandon Cunningham stated, “This trip

taught me strength, not just physical but also mental toughness. It also taught me the most powerful are not marines, firemen or police officers as we’ve raced them all. The most powerful paddlers are those who grow as a team, race as a team and treat each other like family. And the best team will paddle not just to win a medal but to win new experiences, but winning a medal is always a bonus.” Officer Margie Sum stated,” Toronto was team fun. The kids were great. Everyone was adaptable, no drama and they took criticism and correction well. I thought the compliments to the kids by so many people was wonderful. The kids were very gracious. Our community should be proud of them and this program.”

“It was a rainy 60 degrees for our first race on Saturday morning,” explained Officer Jan Croud. “Our goal was 500 meters, in 2:30, and we came in at 2:29 soaking wet. At our next race, we shaved off four seconds in the pouring rain to a

Under the leadership of the team’s founder Andrea Eliscu, the group raised $35,000 in financial and in-kind support to cover all travel expenses. Trip sponsors included Universal Orlando, Disney, the NeuroSpine Institute, Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, Harriett Lake, Air Canada, BB&T, the Orlando Magic, Mears Transportation Group and Orlando Health. The Dueling Dragons team has been practicing weekly to get ready to compete in Toronto. “This was really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both the kids and cops,” said Eliscu. “They experienced teamwork in an entirely new way and earned respect as viable competitors. They were like rock stars everywhere they went at the festival, with people coming up wanting to meet and take pictures with them. Their contagious spirit and gracious behavior was the talk of the racing village.” As part of the trip, the Dueling Dragons team also enjoyed a special visit to Chinatown courtesy of Kathy Ng, a local Toronto nurse, paddler and breast cancer survivor who inspired by the

team when she learned of them in April, raised $2,000 from her dragon boat team and friends within the Toronto healthcare industry to provide this unique cultural experience complete with dinner, a tour, photos and souvenir shopping for the kids. The team returned home to Orlando on Sunday and is already back on the water this week practicing for the Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival which will be held on October 19, 2013. Dragon boats have raced in China for more than 2,700 years. Now one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world, it is estimated that there are over 50 million people in more than 60 countries who participate. Success in dragon boating comes only when a group of 20 paddlers, one steersman and one drummer work together in complete harmony. Dragon boating has been lauded for its ability to bridge cultural gaps, build teams and promote healthy lifestyles. Formed in 2011, the first Dueling Dragons

team was comprised of 10 local at-risk youth and 10 Orlando Police Department SWAT officers. It was the first team of its type in the history of the sport. After practicing together for just four months, the team paddled to a first place finish in the Community Cup and a second place finish in the Open Division of the Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival. Now in its third season, the Dueling Dragons have remained active and competitive. Members from the Orlando Police Department include both male and female officers, and a number of the teens from year one are still participating -- all as volunteers. In 2012, Andrea Eliscu, the brainchild of this unusual team, received the Orlando Police Department’s Good Citizen Award for her efforts in establishing and nurturing the program. In addition, other cities are beginning to replicate this successful program. Toronto is in the process of forming its own “Cops and Kids” team. Understand Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act, also known as the health care reform law, was passed by our government in 2010. The law makes health insurance available to more people, so more people will be able to get the care they need. Starting January 1, 2014, most people will need to have health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, all health care plans will provide essential health benefits including but not limited to maternity and newborn care, routine wellness and preventive services, chronic disease management, dental and vision care for young children. If you don’t have insurance, you will have to pay a new tax. Starting in 2014, the new tax for people who do not buy health insurance will be 1% of your income or $95 for every person in your home that does not have health insurance whichever is more. The fee increases every year. Beginning in 2014, you cannot be denied health care coverage or charged more because

of your medical history. Everyone who applies for health care coverage is guaranteed acceptance for coverage.

• October 1, 2013: Marketplace open enrollment starts

You may be able to get help paying for your health insurance. This depends on your income and family size. You’ll see the amount of savings you’re eligible for when you fill out your Marketplace application after October 1, 2013. For most people, you can use your household’s adjusted gross income for this estimate. Other kinds of income to include when estimating your 2014 income are: rental income, interest, dividends, capital gains, annuities, alimony, and some retirement and pensions. The math will be done for you when you apply.

• March 31, 2014: Open enrollment ends

When you fill out your Health Insurance Marketplace application as soon as October 1, you’ll find out what plans and premiums are available to you and see how much you will save. Most people who apply will qualify for lower costs of some kind. There are 3 key dates you need to mark on your calendar:

• January 1, 2014: Health coverage can start Source: 1. https://www.healthcare.gov Source: 2. http://floridabluehealthcarereform.com As a Florida Blue contracted insurance agent, I can help you understand your choice of plans on the Marketplace, to find out if you can get help paying for your insurance, and to help you enroll in a plan that works for you. You will need to have an email address and start gathering information like your income tax information from 2013 and social security numbers of your family members who will be covered. Make a list of questions you may have and be ready to talk. I am here for you and for all community members as well. Please feel free to call me and get ready to start your application. AACC Office Grand Opening Ceremony On August 27, 2013, the National Entrepreneur Center (NEC) at Fashion Square Mall was the place to be. It was the “Grand Opening” for the AACC office. Members, our Resource Partners at the NEC, and special guests – even Michael McKenna who is running for U.S. Congress – 9th District, came to celebrate with us. We were treated to a

sumptuous buffet of Asian appetizers, catered by Edward Thixton and his staff from Universal Orlando. They even decorated the training room to give it that Asian atmosphere. Jerry Ross, Executive Director of the NEC welcomed everyone and gave an overview of what the Center represents. It is a resource for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Ev-

AACC + IACC Business After Hours Sept. 12, 2013 in Lake Mary was an evening of great Indian food and networking between the Indian American Chamber of Commerce and the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. A big “thank you” to Aroma Indian Cuisine and its owner, Sreeni Jaragula for their hospitality. This is the 2nd year that the two Chambers have held the event at Aroma. What’s New In Mills 50?

Fern Creek Elementary Teaching Garden In Mills 50 District Is A Central Florida First! programs can improve students’ attitudes about fruits and vegetables. Childhood obesity continues to be one of our nation’s urgent health treats. Today, one in three children and adolescents in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

Fern Creek Elementary, located in Mills 50, is Central Florida’s first school to plant an American Heart Association Teaching Garden as part of a national, school-based initiative to improve kids’ attitudes toward healthy eating. The Fern Creek Elementary Teaching Garden was created using American Heart Association science and nutrition guidelines as well as information from gardening and education experts. In addition to providing food for lower-income students in the area, the program educates through garden-based learning. It is a real-life laboratory where students learn how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits. Numerous studies have shown that participating in school garden

Studies show that healthy behavior positively impacts learning. The goal of the program is to improve children’s health. • American eating habits are leading to modern day “malnutrition,” with diets full of foods that have little nutritional value. • French fries make up one-fourth of children’s vegetable intake and are the most common vegetable. Fruit juice, which may lack important fiber found in whole fruits, accounts for 40 percent of children’s daily fruit intake.

American Heart Association Youth Market Vice President Linda Perez-Lenard says Fern Creek’s garden will be large enough for every child to enjoy the harvest. It should provide two harvests a year. While this is a national program, the Fern Creek Elementary Teaching Garden is sponsored locally by PNC Bank. Fern Creek Elementary School is located at 1121 N. Fern Creek Avenue. www.ferncreek.ocps.net

Fern Creek Elementary was specifically chosen because of their great need. 20 - 25 percent of the students are considered homeless and it is a Title I school with 90 percent of their students on the free/reduced lunch program. Korean Culture Summer Camp & Korean Food Festival C.K. Lau keeps Korean culture alive ď Ž By Asia Trend

Korean American Association of Central Florida hosted the 2nd annual Korean Culture Camp at the Orlando Korean Presbyterian Church from July 15th to July 19th followed by the Korean Food Festival on July 19th at the Eastmonte Civic Center. The purpose of the camp is to provide Korean cultural education to the Korean Americans at the Greater Orlando area. (Several) overseas teachers from Korea spent a week to

share the Korean culture with close to fifty children. The highlight of the camp was the Korea Food Festival, an evening of food and fun. All attendees of the summer camp got a chance to showcase their skills they have learnt in the camp. All the parents and guests were very impressed by their performances. Keeping Asian culture alive in the western world is always a challenge to many Asian par-

ents and children. There are many Asian American community organizations are doing their best to educate and encourage the next generation to preserve their Asian Heritage. ASIA TREND EXTRA To view the photo album, visit www.facebook.com/asiatrend/photos_albums

The Crown Jewel of Chinese Martial Arts Tournaments  Madame Jeanie Wu Comes to Town! C.K. Lau

This summer the largest martial arts event of its kind in the USA, the 15th Annual International Chinese Martial Arts Tournament came to Central Florida’s Gaylord Palms Resort. Ranking the highest of the 15 tournaments scheduled for this year, this summer’s event is the only one with a “Diamond” rating, making it the true crown jewel of the entire tournament circuit. Martial arts develop the health of the

whole person, both in mind & body, while in the process, instilling character building qualities, such as respect, humility, discipline & loyalty which will serve that person for a lifetime. Young people in particular are often amazed to find that martial arts are also a form of universal language, like music & math. One does not have to speak any particular language to participate, one just has to follow the rules & put forth their best efforts. Participants get to

meet & interact with people from all nationalities, often making friendships that last a lifetime. With so many of the youth in our society glued to video screens exercising only their thumbs, the importance of supporting the work of martial arts schools cannot be underestimated. The study of martial arts teaches people the value of developing their own strengths & talents. This is something not found when

one sits alone wildly whacking imaginary foes with software constructs. This year, Nick Scrima, the tournament’s producer generously worked with Orlando’s own award winning Taiji enthusiast, Sifu Winters to facilitate the participation of 13 young martial artists from the Meimen Cultural Center in Taiwan for the very first time. Each year, members of the Meimen Kung Fu Art Troupe have toured the world, promoting their healing form of Qigong. This year Sifu Winters prevailed upon them to schedule their entire tour to coincide with this Tournament. The young athletes they chose to compete this year are cherished by their organization, most of them coming to Meimen suffering from dire physical conditions & limitations that would seem insurmountable to most of us. Over time & under the care of their teachers, these severely challenged youngsters practiced Meimen’s advanced Qigong healing techniques, eventually blooming into gifted martial artists. In encouraging & facilitating these valiant students participation in this prestigious tournament, both Nick Scrima & Sifu Winters showed their great generosity & commitment to the core values of the ICMAC.

At one point in this year’s tournament, a small but notable feat of extraordinary goodwill occurred which embodied ICMAC’s motto of “Friendship through the Martial Arts”. During the Advanced Girls Short Weapons competitions, the Meimen competitors were found to have accidently brought Taiji straight swords not fully compliant with the regulations. Use of these swords would have immediately resulted in high deductions from their scores before they even began their routines. At this point, two of their fellow American competitors stepped forward to loan their own rule-compliant swords to their new Taiwanese friends. This incredibly selfless gesture meant the American girls knowingly gave up their obvious advantage, allowing the Meimen girls to compete with them without the devastating handicap a weapons deduction would have created for them. Because of their consideration, the two American girls, Stephanie Chithan (a student of Sifu Yu-Chao Sun & Sifu Sun Yu Chao from Houston) & Catherine Rodriguez (a student of Sifu Robert Jones from Las Vegas) virtually guaranteed the outcome of the competition. Accordingly, they received the Silver and the Bronze awards respectively

instead of the coveted Gold Medal that they had trained for all year, traveling hundreds of miles for the opportunity to try to win. Their generosity of spirit resulted in the Gold Medal being awarded instead to Yi An Hsing (one of Sifu Lee Feng-San’s star students). The actions of Miss Chithan & Miss Rodriguez can truly be said to exemplify the qualities that define the very best martial artists. Next year’s Diamond-rated tournament is scheduled for July 11th-13th at the elegant Gaylord Palms Resort. It is not too early to start training for this important event! For competition regulations & more info about the ICMAC, visit www.kungfuchampionship.com.

“LINSANITY” comes to Tampa

 By Carol Lim

“LINSANITY” won more Jeremy Lin fans in Tampa. The documentary film is about Lin, the first Asian-American to play in the National Basketball League in modern times.

ence. Some who clapped and cheered.

The Florida premiere and one-time showing was at the Muvico Centro Ybor 20 Theater. The film went nationwide with screenings in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle on Oct. 4th.

“I thought it was a very good film. It was very inspirational for people dedicated to achieving their dreams. I was surprised about racism toward Asians in the NBA. I didn’t expect people to be like that. It shows our country has a ways to go to develop,” said Willie Brewer.

The Gasparilla International Film Festival sponsored the film’s debut in Tampa on Thursday night on Oct. 3rd. More than 50 people attended. “Jeremy Lin is very famous in Taiwan. We came to support him,” said Jamie Chen, a University of South Florida student before the movie. “I read the synopsis of the film and it is a very positive story. There aren’t many inspirational films like this. We need more of that in this world,” said Terry Hoft, a GIFF member and retiree. “We came because Lin proved Asian people can do sports. We’re not always sitting in an office or doing math,” said Alvin Chang, a USF student. The film scored well with this Florida audi-

“I really liked it. It was very inspiring and had a good message,” said Jorge Sorino after the movie.

“I thought the movie was phenomenal, simply because Lin relied on his faith in Christ and himself. No matter what the obstacles were, he came through and succeeded. I see no racism in the movie whatsoever unless someone is insensitive about it. I see no racial overtones in this movie at all. What I thought was amazing was all this footage they took of a man when he was succeeding and when he was a total failure--and still recorded everything that he did, not knowing the phenomenal success that he was. That was incredible. An awesome movie,” said Richard Curry, a professional photographer. “LINSANITY” also is the 2013 Sundance Film Festival’s choice and part of GIFF’s

Robert Chen

October 2013 film series. The PG rated documentary is suitable for children with parental guidance. “It doesn’t have widespread release and it’s not playing anywhere else in Florida. So, this film fulfills our mission to showcase movies like this. We know there is a large Asian-American population in Tampa and Orlando. If there’s more demand, we may get permission to show it again,” said Ferdian Jap, GIFF’s Director of Development. Will the film play in national chains like Regal and AMC theaters? “Someday it might, but not likely. The distributor, who is independent, is pacing this film, showing it at film festivals and independent movie theaters,” said Jap. Daniel Dae Kim of CBS’s “Hawaii Five-O” narrated “LINSANITY.” Evan Jackson Leong directed the film. The producers are Christopher Chen and Brian Yang. Greg Louie is the documentary’s film editor. Carol Lim is a contributor to CNN.com iReport, blogger and volunteer weather watcher for WFLA-TV (NBC) in Tampa, Florida. She is a University of South Florida graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications/Broadcast News. Carol also is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.
