The Council For Filipino American Organizations Central Florida  By Lita Martija C.K. Lau

Orlando, Florida - The Council For Filipino American Organizations Central Florida a/k/a CFAO was selected out of 81 nominated applicants as the first runner-up as Florida Minority Enterprise for 2013. The recognition was announced during the Annual “Let’s Do Business Florida” Summit held at Westin Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale June 28, 2013. Florida minority leaders were recognized for their service to community and Country which included the recognition of the “2013 Florida Minority Nonprofit of the Year” sponsored by Hyundai Motors ,where one nonprofit group was presented with a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The winner was a nonprofit group from Tampa Bay. CFAO was acclaimed # two and received $1000.00. Chair Leilani Fontanilla received the award for CFAO. The Council was established in 1998 as the successor to the Filipino Association of Central Florida, a group created in 1970 which served the Filipino American community for 26 years.

The Council was re-organized as an administrative body which membership was composed of the presidents of the different Filipino American organizations in Central Florida. Its mission was broadened to enable it to participate in activities at the national, state and local levels and support projects in the Philippines. At the national level, it is affiliated with the National Federation of Filipino American Associations in the United States (a/k/ a NAFFAA). It assists the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. in its Community Outreach Programs. On a state level it was a key player in organizing and coordinating the Fil-Am

Coalition of the State of Florida, an organization addressing issues and concerns affecting the Filipino American communities in the State and beyond. Through the Fil-AM Coalition was the creation of the Fil-Am Political Alliance which hosted movements encouraging the participation of Filipino Americans in the political process, statewide, regionally, and nationally during our local and national elections.

Through the combined efforts of its member organizations, CFAO has enhanced Filipino American visibility via volunteerism and community service at the local, state, and international levels. Local activities provided by the Bayanihan International Ladies Association (BILA) include monthly health screenings for seniors at the Mark Street Senior Center; weekly support for the New Hope for Kids Center for Grieving; bi-annual activities for the Thunderbird Ranch for mentally and physically challenged youth; biannual activities for the Kid’s House of Seminole County, a transition program for abused children; monthly feedings for the homeless at the Christian Service center soup kitchen; and the annual Thanksgiving Share Dinner for seniors and the underserved. Additional volunteerism and community service provided by the Knights of Rizal and the Ladies for Rizal ( KOR/LFR) include health screenings at the Renaissance Senior center; bi-annual feedings for the homeless at the Coalition for the Homeless and the annual program for the Edgewood Children’s Ranch for youth with behavioral challenges . Notable projects supported by CFAO include the estab-

lishment of two monuments in Central Florida; The Bataan Corregidor Memorial Monument in the City of Kissimmee which honors and memorializes Filipino Americans who served in the Philippines during World War II and the Bust monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, national hero of the Philippines , who is the architect of the Philippine struggle for freedom and independence from Spain, located at Lake Eola, downtown Orlando.. Partnership with the Philippine Department of Education and Labor’s School building projects by VisMindaLuz ,the sponsorship of college students through scholarships at the National Leadership Institute by the KOR and LFR, the “Bantay Bata” Daycare program sponsored by the Ilonggo Association, and the numerous fundraisers to support the victims of natural disasters are some of the service activities provided by the Council at the international level.

Florida Overseas Chinese Culture Teacher Training Courses  By TECO

The 2013 Florida Overseas Chinese Culture Teacher Training Courses were held from July 19 to 21 at the Chinese Cultural Center in Coral Springs. Courses included folk arts, dance, theater, and administrative learning, with forty Chinese teachers from all over Florida participating in the three-day event. Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Abraham Li, Director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Council, joined in the program.

The study program consisted of four instructors: Zeng Li Zhen and Lin Wei Hua were invited from Taiwan by the Overseas Chinese Council, and Lai Meizhi and Lin Biling came from San Francisco.

the closing ceremony, with Director Abraham Li and Mrs. Tsai Hui Wu presiding. Director Li expressed his deep impression of the intensive three-day program with participates coming from all parts of Florida. He hopes that in the future, students from all schools, whether Chinese or public, would participate in such events and become a beacon in upholding cultural heritage.

Tsai Hui Wu, who organizes OCAC teaching training activities each summer, recently undergone surgery, yet appeared at the event.

Following the speeches, students demonstrated what they had learned from the program through various performances of dances and

shadow show. A drama with blue-dyed cotton was also put on, with Mrs. Tsai Hui Wu and Director Li serving as judges. The teams included a cook, farmer, vampire, and aboriginal group with the farmers winning the competition.

The program also introduced Taiwanese director Ang Lee and experiences from a Seattlebased student’s cultural heritage. Awards were distributed and all participants watched a video which captured memories from the three-day program. Finally, goodbyes were said and everyone looked forward to seeing each other again next year.

The program was an intensive training experience. From morning until evening, students learned folk drama, Chinese Puppetry and appreciation, legends taken from blue-dye, folk dances (colored silk and chopsticks), and Shadow Play arts.

Students concluded their training on July 21 and received certificates and awards, creating a lively and warm atmosphere. Lai Meizhi hosted

15th Anniversary Orlando International Chinese Martial Arts Championship ď Ž Asia Trend The 15th Annual Orlando International Chinese Martial Arts Championship (ICMAC) was held July 12-14, 2013, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This is the tournament that started the ICMAC Worldwide Circuit and is internationally recognized as one of the premier Chinese martial arts events not only in North American but throughout the world. ICMAC awarded prestigious Grand Champion cups to advanced competitors in Traditional, Wushu, and Internal Styles, and magnificent

World Title belts to the advanced Sanda (San Shou) winners. Seminars were offered by leading masters and the evening showcase performance thrilled the huge audience. Competitors came from many countries representing more than 100 different schools.

Affordable Care Act: Creating Health Access for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders  By Howard K. Koh, M.D., MPH Assistant Secretary for Health

Every one of us knows someone- a friend, a relative, or maybe a patient- who couldn’t receive the care they needed because they lacked insurance. Thankfully, this will start to change on October 1, 2013, when people can sign up for coverage through https://www.healthcare.gov/, with benefits beginning as early as January 1, 2014.

The Affordable Care Act — what some may know as Obamacare, health reform, or the health care law of 2010 — is a historic piece of legislation that can reduce health disparities in our nation. Of note, a lot in the health care law represents good news for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Through provisions of the Affordable Care Act, more Americans will have access to affordable health care coverage. For Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the law’s benefits will help

reduce disparities in both health care and health outcomes through expanded insurance coverage and better access to high-quality health care services.

For example, the Affordable Care Act has enabled 121,000 young Asian American and Pacific Islanders ages 19 to 25 to gain health coverage, because they can now stay on their parents’ plans until age 26.

Also, about 3.8 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders with private insurance have gained expanded coverage of free preventive care, such as mammograms, diabetes screenings, and hepatitis A and B vaccines for infants, children, and adults.

Lastly, nearly 2 million uninsured Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders will have new opportunities for coverage through the Health Insurance

Marketplace.

As a Korean American son of immigrants, I am personally committed to help ensure that the nearly 1 in 5 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) who currently lack health insurance now have access to high quality, affordable health coverage. And as a physician and Assistant Secretary for Health, I am confident that the Affordable Care Act will deliver on the promise of better insurance, better care, and better prevention to elevate the public health of all Americans.

This is our chance to make the dream of quality, affordable health insurance a reality for millions of Americans in all of our communities. If we work together, America will be a country where all people have the opportunity to attain their highest achievable level of health.

As many aspects of old Japan remain in Sumo, such as topknots, traditional dress, and ancient customs, professional Sumo is more than just a sport; it’s a living example of traditional Japanese culture. The wrestlers serve as cultural ambassadors when they take part in events overseas.

Sumo and Shinto Sumo wrestling has its origin in the Shinto religion and all ceremonies in Sumo are related to purification. Historians agree that the origins of Sumo date back 2000 years. At certain Shinto shrines, forms of ritual dance where a human is said to wrestle with Kami (a Shinto divine spirit) are still carried out today. However, Sumo never really flourished as a spectator sport until the early 1600’s. The Sumo bout symbolizes the struggle between the steward and the lower self, in which the steward tries to purify the heart so Divine Presence can manifest itself.

Shinto is the native religion of Japan and is more a set of rituals and ceremonies than a system of beliefs or a definite code of ethics. The

word itself means “way of the gods”. Sumo was originally performed to entertain the gods (Kami) during festivals (Matsuri). It has served to symbolize and provide a sense of belonging, to identify and unify the Japanese people culturally, and to serve as a barrier demarcating the Japanese from other peoples, providing them with a sense of cultural uniqueness. In its association with Shinto, Sumo has also been seen as a bulwark of Japanese tradition.

Shinto ritual pervades every aspect of Sumo.

Before a tournament, two of the Gyōji functioning as Shinto priests enact a ritual to consecrate the newly constructed Dohyō, and various Shinto rituals are associated even with the practice Dohyō at Heya. Both the Dohyō-iri, or ring-entering ceremonies performed by the top two divisions before the start of their wrestling day, and in the rituals performed by both combatants immediately before a bout, are derived from Shinto.

It retains other Shinto associations as well. The Yokozuna’s ring-entering ceremony is regarded as a purification ritual in its own right, and is oc-

casionally performed at Shinto shrines for this purpose. Every newly-promoted Yokozuna performs his first ring-entering ceremony at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

Andrew Tian Memorial Trust

The Sarasota-Manatee County communities, local restaurants and others have raised $10,000 for the Andrew Tian Memorial Trust Fund.

Tian was the former manager of New Dynasty Chinese Buffet in Sarasota. He died a few days later after a brutal attack by a customer who left the restaurant without paying for his meal. The incident happened July 14, 2013.

Sarasota Sheriff’s officers arrested Juan De Dios Rodriguez. Rodriguez is charged with manslaughter.

Tian’s partner and fiancee, Marylou L. Anderson established the memorial trust in late July. Anderson also is a trustee of the fund.

Anderson says the money raised from the fund will go to Tian’s son, Beichen. Beichen Tian is a third-year graduate student at the University of Florida. He is studying pharmacy.

“When he (Beichen) concludes these final two years, he may be nearly $100,000 in debt in student loans. We can’t erase this tragedy but we can make a difference in the life of Andrew’s son. Andrew left behind a high-level job in China for a chance for his son to have a future in the United States. His son meant everything to him,” said Anderson.
