The Kung Fu Pioneer in Orlando By Asia Trend
“After years, months, days, and hours of work. I am finally finished with my first official documentary for Wah Lum Films. I am excited to have finished a project that is so meaningful to me. Not only is my father an inspiration to me, but to thousands of others as well. The life of my father is not just about Kung fu, it is about the journey of an incredible man and his dreams. His story will amaze anyone who watches it,” said Mimi Chan.
About the movie Step into the extraordinary life of a Chinese immigrant who overcame the challenges to
achieve the American dream. This biography follows the path of a young boy who learns the value of hard work and perseverance through kung fu training. He escapes the harshness of political oppression, bravely ventures out on his own, and embraces opportunity in a new land. The now highly recognized Grandmaster Pui Chan is one of the pioneers responsible for bringing traditional kung fu to America. He built his first kung fu temple in America, and leads and internationally renowned martial arts system across the world. Pui’s eldest daughter and successor Mimi Chan confronts a new set of challenges, trying to keep the traditional values alive in an increasingly modernized era
About the director - Mimi Chan Mimi Chan was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She moved to Orlando, Florida, when her father, Grandmaster Chan Pui, opened the Wah Lum Temple. She began her kung fu training at the age of 3, and by 5 was already performing in local exhibitions. Tampa Natsu Matsuri - Japan Festival in Tampa Bay You may think that the Tampa Bay Area doesn’t have a very large Japanese presence, but what’s lacking in numbers is made up in enthusiasm! We were fortunate enough to have two Japanese festivals so far this year. In March, the University of South Florida Japanese Club held their annual Harumatsuri (spring festival) on campus at the new Marshall Center Amphitheater. This USF-based club has only been reactivated in the past three years and has already been doing an awesome job of entertaining and educating the USF community with Japanese culture. Though a small campus-based festival, USF J-Club’s Harumatsuri featured many booths, displays, and presentations including travel information from IACE, the Japanese Consulate’s JET Programme, Japanese calligraphy, origami,

kimono, martial arts, taiko drumming, cosplay, anime and video games. The newly formed Japan-America Society of Tampa Bay (jastb.org) also participated with a vendor booth selling various cultural items to raise startup funds. On a scholarly note, this festival played host to the University’s Japanese speech contest. USF currently offers calligraphy classes in addition to several years of Japanese language instruction. Nine language students made presentations in Japanese and were judged by Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer players Takuya Yamada (#32) of Tokyo and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake (#10) from Mie Prefecture. Mr. Yamada and Mr. Yoshitake also signed autographs and Rowdies tickets were given away to lucky winners of a rock-paper-scissors com-
petition! Then more recently in June, the Tampa region of the Florida Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Alumni Association held its annual Natsumatsuri (summer festival) in Seffner. A rainy weekend threatened our fun but thanks to Teru-teru Bouzu, a doll usually made by Japanese children to pray for sunny days, we had great weather for the duration of the event. Based on the local summer festivals experienced by JET exchange teachers in rural Japan, Tampa Natsumatsuri has been entertaining the Japanese and Japanophile communities with traditional festival culture for seven straight years! In addition to the cultural booths present at both of the 2012 festivals, every year Natsumatsuri also includes many Japanese-style carnival games for the

kids and young-at-heart adults. This year, the ladies of the Keylime Newsletters (keylimenewsletters.com), a Tampa-based, online Japanese language publication, created an organization and festival booth to continue the collection of funds for Touhoku Earthquake and Tsunami victims. Visit their website at ilovejapancraft.com to buy some beautiful handmade origami jewelry and support a worthy cause. This year marked Natsumatsuri’s very first cosplay (anime-themed costume) competition. It was judged by Jason Fetters, writer for the popular culture website Crazed Fanboy, and Monique Smith, the organizer of Kakkoii-Otaku Clan, a local Anime Meetup group. The winners were overjoyed upon receiving some very nice prizes! We hope to see this event return and grow at next year’s festival. Both the USF and JETAA festivals showcased the exciting rhythms of the Tampa Bay Okinawa Kenjin Kai taiko exhibition team. We’ve been seeing a lot of this dynamic Sarasota group lately and we’re very glad for every opportunity. Natsumatsuri also featured a beautiful performance by a local Japanese language chorus and a fun, audience-participation Bon-Odori festival dance. We’re lucky to have so many talented people in our area devoted to sharing Japanese music and culture with their neighbors. Many thanks to the Consul General of Japan in Miami for sponsoring both of these excellent festivals. See you next year! By Esther Searfoss

ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- Filipino Americans in Central Florida, on June 12,join their compatriots worldwide to celebrate the 114THANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF PHILIPPINEINDEPENDENCE. It was on June 12, 1898 when the Philippine Republic declared the culmination of almost four centuries of its struggle for nationhood, and the emancipation of the Filipino race from the tyranny of Spanish colonialism. That historical day marked the transformation of the Filipino into a proud citizen of an independent nation of the world, and established the Philippines as having the first constitutional democracy in Asia. Sixty four years ago, London hosted its second Olympic Games. Sammy Lee, the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States, recalls his challenge of competing in a sport which was white dominated at that time. As a twelve-year-old in 1932, Lee dreamed of becoming a diver, but at the time Latinos, Asians and AfricanAmericans were only allowed to use Fresno’s Brookside Pool on Wednesdays, on what was called “international day”. Because Lee needed a place to practice and could not regularly use the public pool, his coach dug a pit in his backNathan Adrian : Swimming Adrian of Bremerton, Wash., 24, began swimming at the age of 5, after seeing his brother and sister take up the sport. Adrian’s mother, who was born in Hong Kong, is a nurse for the Bremerton School District and his father is a retired nuclear engineer. Adrian won gold when he swam in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He will compete in the 100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter freestyle relay events in London. Adrian holds a pre-med degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and hopes to one day become a doctor.
Howard Bach : Badminton Bach was born in Vietnam in 1979 and came to the United States when he was 3. By the encouragement of his father, he began playing badminton at a local YMCA in San Francisco as a child. Bach’s talents earned him a spot to compete in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. One year later, he and Tony Gunawan won the men’s

This obstacle of course would not stop his dream and he ended up winning the gold medal in 10m platform diving and bronze medal in 3m springboarddiving in 1948 and won another gold medal in 10m platform in 1952. He is also the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in Olympic platform diving. doubles title at the 2005 World Badminton Championship. The victory marked the first time an American badminton team ever medaled at a world championship. Her skills caught the attention of college recruiters and earned her a scholarship to Indiana University, where she led the school to its first-ever NCAA tournament. Bashore-Smedley was also named the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year and became the school’s sole First Team All-American. This summer, she joins a roster of 16 women who
compete for the gold in London.

The volleyball star has a mixed heritage. Her mother is Hawaiian-ChinesePortuguese and her father is Lithuanian.

This June, residents of Central Florida were treated to a special visit from a fantastic group of cultural ambassadors: The Meimen Gongfu Art Troupe. under the direction of Shifu Le Feng-San presenting cultural performances and lectures on health wherever they go. Meimen is a non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement of the health of all the world’s people and the advancement of peaceful relationships amongst nations. Already, citizens of over eighty countries in the world have had a chance to meet these fine performers and educators and to benefit from their great spirit of fellowship and goodwill. Coming directly to the US from a successful tour in Peru, they have named this year’s tour: “Health for World & Culture for Peace”. Their stated mission is to provide educational value through entertainment. They are dedicated to preserving the time-honored Chinese traditions of the martial arts (both external and internal forms), dance, music, and song. Of great interest to me
Director General Ray Mou receives certificate of appreciation from Meimen Gongfu Art Troupe
is that they have also been heartily welcomed in ‘Mainland’ China, the People’s Republic of China. This is because they are purely interested in cultural performance and in people’s wellbeing. Refreshingly, the Meimen Gongfu Art Troupe has no religious or political axes to grind against the country from whence their cultural heritage sprang from many thousands of years ago. Because of their open heartedness, the Chinese people have been very pleased with their interactions with Meimen and the world is a better place because of these sorts of international instances of plain, unadulterated goodwill. Would that all cultures could be so forward thinking as to understand the great value inherent in preserving their own national, ethnic and individual historical heritages. Future generations will only thank those who have kept the rich cultural foundation

of their people alive. In addition to the preservation of ancient culture through the art of performance, the Meimen Center offers workshops and demonstrations in a foundational form of Qigong that is undoubtedly the most practiced form of exercise in the entire world called Pingshuai. Pingshuai is basically a level arm swinging form that is both simple yet profound in its beneficial effects. In many cities, Pingshuai clubs have started up, including one in the Orlando area. The President of the Meimen Americas organization is Joe Wang, and he can be reached at joewcino@gmail.com. People get together and share some exercise and some food on a weekly basis providing a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and to learn a great new exercise at the same time. Whether one was able to attend one of their free demonstrations, a Qigong workshop or their gala Sunday afternoon performance in the beautiful auditorium at Freedom High School in Taft, one was immediately struck by the lively camaraderie and genuine happiness radiating from this group. Their performance on Sunday showcased the immense talent of this Gongfu Art Troupe. Their Tai Chi performances were impeccable and as graceful as any I have ever witnessed. Their traditional Erhu musician was absolutely inspired and literally ‘rocked the house’ with her enthusiastic playing. At some points in their performances that Sunday I found myself literally weeping at the beauty I was witnessing. Unlike many performance groups which rely on fancy costumes and elaborate sets, this Troupe was costumed in a beautifully simple but elegant fashion which accented their most excellent Kung Fu. One only had to look at these incredibly talented performers to see the professional quality of their arts and of their dedicated training.

Before their event on Sunday concluded they invited the audience to have a chance to learn the basics of Pingshuai. Some of us were invited on stage to join the performers and honored guests while everyone else was encouraged to stand up and give the exercise a try. Helping Asian Americans Vote in Florida:
Get Ready for November!
Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the U.S. with a 46 percent increase since 2000. Representing almost 6 percent of the U.S. population, the total Asian American population is over 17 million. With this tremendous growth, Asian Americans have the potential for increased political influence. For example, 78 percent of the Asian American community joined an overwhelming majority of Latino and African American voters in Nevada to make the difference in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s close re-election in November 2010. In Florida, Asian Americans are poised to play an important role in the 2012 elections, potentially casting the deciding votes for candidates in close races. According to the 2010 Census, there are currently 573,083 Asian Americans in Florida, a 72 percent increase from 2000. During the 2008 elections, 62 percent of eligible Asian American voters were registered and 88 percent of those registered turned out to vote. A recent survey of Asian American registered voters conducted by the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice partners, Asian American Justice Center and the Asian American Institute, along with APIAVote and Lake Research Partners, found that nearly half of Asian American voters surveyed in Florida indicated that they are more enthusiastic to vote this year than in previous elections. Also, 90 percent of Floridian Asian Americans reported being almost certain to vote this November, indicating the potential for record turnout of Asian American voters in Florida this year. While enthusiasm for voting is high, barriers remain that keep Asian Americans from voting. One of the biggest barriers is language. Voting can be an intimidating and complicated process, even for native English speaking voters. For new citizens whose first language is not English, the voting process is even more difficult to maneuver. Many language minority voters are deterred from voting because of confusion and lack of language assistance during the voting process. Luckily, there are laws that allow language

minority voters to bring someone into the voting booth with them to help them understand the ballot. Under Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act, voters have the right to have anyone help them in the voting process, except for their employer or a representative of their labor union. The person helping may even be a teenage child or a nonU.S. citizen. Section 208 applies to voters needing assistance because of blindness, disability or inability to read or write, including voters whose native language is not English and have difficulty with English. Section 208 can help any voter that feels uncomfortable with the voting process or does not understand the ballot. To take advantage of Section 208, voters should arrive at the polling place with their helper and inform the election officials that they have chosen this person to help them vote. The voter will be required to complete the “Declaration to Secure Assistance” form stating they are a registered voter and indicating who they are requesting assistance from. The person helping the voter must also fill out a “Declaration to Provide Assistance” form stating who they are providing assistance to, that they are not the voter’s employer or a representative of the voter’s union, and that they have not solicited the voter near the polling place to offer assistance.

show poll workers in case they are turned away. AAJC is also providing Florida Know-Your-Rights palm cards that will answer frequently asked questions about the election process and will arm voters with the knowledge needed to successfully participate in the political process. These palm cards will be available in Chinese (Traditional), Vietnamese and Thai. Finally, AAJC and APIAVote will run an Asian-language Election Protection hotline, 1-888-API-VOTE (274-8683), on Election Day and the day before Election Day. The hotline will provide assistance in Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Thai, and Vietnamese. Voters should call in with any questions they have about voting, including problems they are experiencing at the polls.
Unfortunately, not all poll workers are aware of Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act and may wrongly turn people away from the polls. To that end, AAJC is working with the Asian American Federation of Florida to ensure that Asian American voters are aware of their rights at the polls by providing in-language materials that explain their voting rights. AAJC will provide translated Section 208 factsheets for voters in the following languages: Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Tagalog, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Hmong, Khmer, Urdu, Laotian and Thai. These factsheets and other resources can be downloaded from AAJC’s website at www.advancingequality.org. Voters can bring these factsheets to the polls with them to Support Asia Trend Magazine, Become our Advertiser!

Japanese Language School Graduation Ceremony On April 7th, there was an entrance ceremony for the 2012-2013 school year. 17 students entered in the 4yrs old class (youchibu) and 20 students in the 1st grade, and 2 students in the middle school 1st grade class. We started the new school year with 134 students. These are the comments of middle school graduates: Nina Cortes, There were moments that I hated it and moments that I loved it, but the one thing I can say is that I absolutely have no regrets. The Japanese school year starts in April and ends in March. On March 17, 2012, at Lake Highland Preparatory School, there was a graduation ceremony for Orlando Hoshuko. Two students graduated from the elementary school division (shougakubu) and 5 students graduated from the middle school division (chuugakubu). The students study Japanese grammar every Saturday from 9am to 12pm. Mr. Hudson, the Principal of LHPD, attended the ceremony and gave a speech complimenting the students on behalf of their devotion to coming every Saturday to study.

Leinani Hession - I went to Orlando Hoshuko for nine years. My mom is from Japan, and she had taught me Japanese from an early age, but at Orlando Hoshuko, I learned to speak and write it at a more advanced level. Now, when I visit my family in Japan, I’m able to really communicate with them. Though it may have been a hard and tiring nine years, I think it was completely worth it, and even fun to spend time with the friends I made there. There were many Friday nights spent tearfully over the Japanese homework I had procrastinated on while all my other friends were out partying, and Saturday mornings where I was literally wrenched out of
my bed by my mom, but all that is outweighed by the fun times me and my friends had in class and the knowledge I have now. Orlando Hoshuko helped me gain a sense of Japanese culture and honed my skill in the language. Aimee Doucette – After nine consecutive years of attending the Japanese Orlando Hoshuko, I can proudly say it was a wonderful expierience. Not only was it a great way to keep in touch with the japanese community, it also helped me learn alot of kanji, and also the in-depth history of japan of which we do not cover in an average public school. Naomi Rambo- Going to Hoshuko has really opened my eyes to the possibilities we all have, and how privileged we were to have received such a great oppurtunity. At this school, I have met my best friends and have shared joyous memories with all of them. At this school, I was able to learn like a real Japanese student and sharpen my Japanese literacy. It may sound crazy, but I miss cramming every Friday night, getting up early every Satuday morning, and complaining about how I hated not being able to hang out with friends on Friday night. Even through all of that, Orlando Hoshuko was by far the greatest experience I have ever had. Orlando Hoshuko, Inc. www.orlandohoshuko.org By Chieko Rambo

delivered to Southern California customer On July 20th, Honda delivered the first, all-electric 2013 Honda Fit EV to Ventura County, CA residents Matt and Becky Walton. The couple took delivery of their Honda Fit EV at the Woodland Hills Honda dealership located north of Los Angeles.
“It’s truly an honor to take delivery of the first Honda Fit EV and participate in the advancement of all-electric vehicles in the real world,” said Mr. Walton. “The Honda Fit EV is not only a sustainable and energy efficient transportation option with the highest fuelefficiency rating of any EV, but it has the added bonus of being fun-

to-drive and can fully recharge from empty in less than three hours.” They have been Honda fans for decades since the famous “N600” and are going to use the Fit EV to commute. The Honda Fit EV is available for lease-only. 1100 units will be released in the US and carries a lease price of $389 per month over a 3-year term. Toyota is also on the plan to unwrap their Tesla-powered EV this summer that will expand the choices on EV.

Just in time to hype up Resident Evil 6, Capcom has opened the Biohazard Cafe and Grill in Tokyo, a restaurant that aims to evoke Raccoon City and the universe of Resident Evil. Hit the jump for some photos of RE-inspired foods, beverages, and a one-to-one scale Tyrant! The restaurant is on the 7th floor of the Shibuya PARCO and has a “Resident Evil” inspired menu (though no “Jill sandwich”, unfortunately), replica props from the game and plenty of rare “Resi-

So, is anyone interested in pooling some cash together for a few tickets to Tokyo? The restaurant will only be open for one year (a term in the food industry referred to as a “pop-up restaurant”), so if you’re keen on gnawing on hunks of meat with other RE fans, I suggest you plan your trip soon! http://www.c2s.co.jp/biohazard/stars/index2.html

The Home for Good Campaign
Perhaps no other state in the country has been harder hit by the country’s mortgage crisis than Florida. In Florida, mortgage delinquencies have been among one of the highest in the country, representing 17% of all originations of first lien mortgages between 2004 and 2008 in Florida, compared with 9% in California and 14% in Nevada.(1) Further, nearly half of the single-family mortgage holders in South Florida owe more than their houses are worth, a worrisome reminder of the region’s 3 1/2-year housing slump. In Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, 47 percent of the 837,177 single-family home mortgages are “underwater,” according to Zillow.com, a real estate company that compiles data from public property records. Nationwide, 23 percent of single-family homeowners with a mortgage had so-called negative equity(2). The rate of foreclosure filings – a bank repossession, default notice or auction sale notice – increased 22.54 percent in Florida for the first six months of 2012 compared with the same period last year, according to a report released this month by RealtyTrac, a California-based company that tracks distressed properties.(3) Without significant large scale solutions, homeowners remain vulnerable to foreclosure and abandonment further weakening the economic viability of neighborhoods and extend the housing downturn. While the market continues to erode, there exists a need to preserve the American dream of homeownership. Florida’s housing crisis is real

and continues to threaten the state’s economy. The mortgage crisis exposed weaknesses in the housing system which have long affected low-income families and communities of color. Time and again our families are targets of risky loans and the housing meltdown only compounded those challenges. Asian American, African American, and Hispanic families were 1.7, 3, and 2.2 (respectively) times as likely as White borrowers to receive subprime loans even after accounting for similar credit profiles. In research conducted by the Center for Responsible Lending, it was found that Asian American communities represent only 2% of the share of loans made between 2004 and 2008, however represent approximately 8% of completed foreclosures overall in the state and 17% of the loans in the foreclosure process. African-Americans and Latinos represent 10% and 21% of all loan originations during this period, but 22% and 24% of all loans in foreclosure and 10% and 12% of completed foreclosures during this same period. (1) Through foreclosures, our families have battled substantial wealth loss, emotional discord, and a rocky financial future. Cash-strapped homeowners, that owe more than their properties are worth, often try to avoid foreclosure by selling for less than the mortgage amount and asking lenders to forgive the difference or seek loan modifications with principal reductions. The deals frequently are exercises in frustration, as lenders take weeks or months to consider offers, so that exasperated buyers walk away during the delays, and properties linger on the market, prolonging the housing slump and the recession. To better support homeowners, non-profit housing counseling organizations like NANAY (National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth) work tirelessly to assist homeowners to navigate the bureaucracy within financial institutions to obtain loan modifications and reach other alternatives for avoiding foreclosure. Research conducted by the Urban Institute finds that homeowners are more likely to receive a

loan modification when working with a housing counselor with odds increased by 89 percent of obtaining a modification cure from a serious delinquency or foreclosure compared to the odds without counseling assistance(4). Housing counseling assistance remains an important part of the solution to address the housing crisis. In addition, we must resolve the current foreclosure crisis and change our housing system to be more equitable, accessible, and sustainable. With these challenges in mind, NANAY is joining National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) and other national civil rights and consumer leaders such as the National Council of La Raza and the National Urban League to support the Home for Good (H4G) campaign to urge the presidential candidates to adopt policies to: 1. Stop needless foreclosures 2. Expand affordable rental housing 3. Revive a sustainable path to homeownership In 2011, the H4G campaign advanced housing policy reform to preserve what for many families is their largest singular asset—their home. Home for Good (H4G) worked to reframe the housing debate, strengthening relationships between field members and Capitol Hill and increasing advocates’ participation in the policy debate. Through these efforts, H4G gathered more than 10,000 petition signatures and postcards and delivered them to the Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner. The campaign facilitated more than 400 calls from the American public into Treasury asking Secretary Geithner to use his leadership to stem wrongful foreclosures. Their efforts also helped secure 12 months of forbearance for unemployed homeowners through the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) and FHA and in a dedicated special action, they helped secure $45 million in funding for housing counseling—a critical service that was originally wholly defunded. In this coming election, H4G partners will challenge presidential candidates to address the foreclosure crisis and prioritize housing as a top issue. American homeowners need solutions that can help protect homeownership, help families to stabilize their finances and rebuild communities that have been ravaged by lender misconduct

and lack of consumer protections. As a partner, NANAY is engaging community leaders and cultivating champions to energize a base around housing issues. Individuals and community leaders can support the campaign in a variety of ways, by addingtheirnames or theirorganization’s name to the petition requesting presidential candidates to seek sensible housing reformat www.myhomeforgood.com.
ABOUT National CAPACD: The National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) is the first national advocacy organization dedicated to addressing the housing, community and economic development needs of diverse and growing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. National CAPACD was founded in 1999 by established community development practitioners to be a voice for the community development needs of AAPI communities and to strengthen the capacity of community based organizations to create neighborhoods of hope and opportunities. In February 2010, National CAPACD was designated as
the first and only AAPI-serving HUD housing counseling intermediary. National CAPACD’s member-based network includes more than 100 community-based organizations and individuals, including community development corporations, preservation agencies, community-based social service providers, advocacy agencies, as well as national intermediaries and financial institutions.
