Chinese American Political Star Rising, Along with Fears of China
Source: New America Media, News Report, Peter Schurmann
SAN FRANCISCO – Barack Obama’s victory, the numbers show, is in large measure thanks to the support he received from, among others, Hispanics, Blacks, and women voters. Less credited, however, are Asian Americans, who voted 72 percent in favor of the president. While their numbers remain small, at just 5.8 percent of the population, they are one of the fastest growing segments of American society, according to a recent Pew study, having surpassed Hispanics as the largest group of new immigrants. They are also highly educated, with nearly 50 percent of those 25 and older holding at least a bachelor’s degree. Such statistics help explain the steady rise in political leaders of Asian descent in states like California, home to sizable Asian American populations. And perhaps nowhere is that more clear than in the Chinese community, where rapidly growing civic engagement also coincides with the growing strength of the world’s number two superpower. Last Sunday, the Chinese-language World Journal ran a full page spread profiling 35 Chinese American candidates running for either local or national office in the state. Names included Otto Lee and Jennifer Ong, both of whom eventually lost in their bids for Congress and the State Assembly, respectively. But Tuesday’s results also showed a number of wins -- 15 in total -- including State Assemblyman Paul Fong and Grace Mah, elected to a seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Education. In San Francisco, where the Asian American population hovers around 36 percent, and where the first-ever Chinese American mayor was recently elected, 10 Chinese American candidates vied for seats on just about every branch of city government, from the Board of Supervisors to the Board of Education and the community college Board of Trustees. That unprecedented turnout, says Harvey Dong, who teaches Asian American and Ethnic Studies at U.C. Berkeley, signals an awareness of the changing demographics in both the state and nationwide, which in turn is fueling a “rising confidence” among Asians, and particularly Chinese.
But it also comes following a hotly contested presidential race in which the candidates strove to outdoone another in lambasting China, which was portrayed by both as a major threat to America’s continued prosperity.
ening” for aspiring political leaders within the Chinese American community.
China bashing, says Dong, poses a particular challenge for Chinese American political hopefuls. “As Asian American candidates, whether they like it or not, they are looked at a certain way,” he notes, pointing out long-held stereotypes of Asians as not entirely American. “Their loyalty would definitely be questioned and challenged as they go higher up.”
Koo, a member of the Committee of 100, which works to improve the political stature of Asian Americans and U.S. relations with China, agrees with Dong that political attacks on China could pose problems for Chinese American politicians seeking higher office, especially in the country’s heartland.
A 2010 ad put out by the lobbying group Citizens Against Government Waste, which ran again this past election, depicts a lecture hall 20 years into the future. A speaker addresses a room of students, explaining in Mandarin how it came to be that America now works for China. The camera pans across a room full of chuckling Asian faces. Dong says such ads, coupled with vitriolic campaign rhetoric, only help to reaffirm the belief among non-Asians that Chinese and other Asians in the United States are “perpetual foreigners.” And it’s that attitude, says retired business consultant George Koo, which continues to motivate Chinese Americans to enter the political arena. Pointing to the 1999 federal indictment of nuclear physicist Wen Ho Lee – who was widely seen as the victim of a racially motivated witch hunt -- Koo says the event served as an “awak-
Lee, originally charged with passing state secrets to China, was eventually found guilty of mishandling documents.
“It may not be as much of a problem in California,” he explains, where the Chinese community has deep roots and where voters are more exposed to dealings with China. Nor in New York, which just elected its first-ever Asian American congressperson in Grace Meng. “But in the south, and the Midwest … if opponents play the China card, it could work.” As for this past election, Koo says the level of antagonism against China was worse than in previous races. “Candidates felt obliged to cater to popular misconceptions,” he notes. But with election results pointing to the growing clout of minority voters, and with an emerging cohort of elected Chinese officials, Koo questions the effectiveness of such a strategy in the long run. “We are going forward toward a more pluralistic society,” he says. “The China bashing, the ethnic bashing … it won’t pay off.”

GMS Scholar 2012 GMS Ambassador University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
On November 24th,2012, REACH of Central Florida and Orlando Downtown library jointly organized the Gate Millennium Scholarship Information Session. As a GMS Scholar 2012 and a GMS Ambassador, I am honored toexplain the application process of Gates Millennium Scholarship (GMS). I am excited to meet more than 30, students and their parents who showed up at the venue, even though it was a prime time for Thanksgiving shopping. Thanks to the Downtown library, they included this information session in their program at least two months before this event, so there were many students and parents from different ethnic groupinterested in knowing about the scholarship. It took me about 30 minutes to explain the structure of the scholarship, application process, andtheessays. I shared my own personal experience in applying this scholarship, how to summarize the important twist and turns in my high school years, and how I pursued my own dreams and passions. I also told them how being a GMS scholar has changed my life. GMS is more than a full-ride scholarship, they provide resources such as the leadership conference, and the mentoring program to make sure the Scholar is successful at the college and engage in the communities. Looking at the audience, I remembered how I was helped last year by GMS mentors at the GMS applicants 2011-2012 Facebook group page. In the Q&A sessions, many of them asked various questions and I am so glad that I can share what I know to them. I feel so blessed to be a part of the GMS family. For high school seniors who wish to apply for GMS, please visit GMS website at www.gmsp.org and the deadline is January 16, 2013. You can request to join the Gates Millennium Scholarship Applicants 2012-2013 Facebook group page https://www.facebook.com/groups/206450769464998/ so that you can get more information and ask questions about your application process. If you prefer to send email, I can be reached at hanslau123@hotmail.com and I would be glad to mentor you during your application process.

“The numbers, alone, show a huge opportunity to build business from Florida’s Asian communities,” said Anthony Patrone, VP of Marketing & Player Development at Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, one ofSeminole Gaming’s seven Florida casinos. “But it’s not just the numbers. Since the Seminole Hard Rocks opened in 2004 and table games like Baccarat were added in 2008, we’ve seen strong response from many Asian American players. Our goal is to continue to build this business.”
Asian-themed Promotions and Special Events In addition to the physical changes underway at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, more Asian themed promotions and special events are planned. The casino’s comprehensive database is segmented so that players who frequent the Asian gaming area can be identified and offered special incentives designed specifically for them. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa also plans to develop a marketing program geared to tourists who travel to U.S. gaming destinations from many Asian nations. For decades, Las Vegas has seen a major influx of tourists from China, Japan and elsewhere in Asia. And the Chinese island of Macau, near Hong Kong, is now the world’s leading gaming travel destination. The opening of Jubao Palace in Tampa marks the first entry into the Asian gaming market at any of the seven Florida casinos operated by Seminole Gaming, although the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood also sees a significant representation of Asian casino guests.

CAI-SHEN: bring the wealth to your house In Chinese religion, the popular god (or gods) of wealth, widely believed to bestow on his devotees the riches carried about by his attendants. During the two-week New Year celebration, incense is burned in Cai Shen’s temple (especially on the fifth day of the first lunar month), and friends joyously exchange the traditional New Year greeting “May you become rich” (“Gongxi facai”). Cai Shen (財神) is the God of Wealth and Cai Shen Dao means the God of Wealth is coming. On the eve of Chinese New Year, almost all the Chinese will pray and “invite” the God of Wealth to their house. This is done as Chinese believes the Cai Shen will bring them wealth and good luck throughout the year. Happy Faces throughout the Festival No one would disagree that you can always find many happy faces at the Orlando Japan Festival every year. The performers, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and audiences came together at the festival to spread the laugh and love. This year, Japan Festival Committee has decided to dedicate a portion of the proceeds to the “Kesennuma Ooya School Bus Project” in Kesennuma, Miyagi prefecture, Japan where it was greatly damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Japan Association of Orlando organizes the festival every year to celebrate the Japan-USA friendship and promote cultural interchange to the local community. By Asia Trend

SunTrust hosts global workshop –
Local Resources for Accessing the World To share ideas and information with Central Florida entrepreneurs and companies looking internationally for new markets, SunTrust Banks Global Trade Solutions presented a Global Business Symposium recently for members of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando. “Cynthia Flores and Paige Baron, executives with our community partner SunTrust Banks, de-
vised the idea for a program that brought together a panel of Central Florida experts appropriately titled ‘Local Resources for Accessing the World’,” said Gail Rayos, president of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. The nearly 70 Chamber members and guests benefited from the tips shared by local professionals specializing in international business services as well as trade and economic development organizations that help businesses globally.

The workshop and reception sponsored by SunTrust Banks was held November 5 at the National Entrepreneur Center at Orlando Fashion Square. International business, including both trade in goods and services as well as foreign direct investment, accounts for close to 20 percent of Florida’s economy. As well, approximately 1.3 million or nearly 17 percent of jobs in Florida depend on international business - 1.1 million

2012 Mukushin-ryu Florida Koshukai As we have for the past 5 years, Rising Sun Dojo held their annual Mukushin-ryuKoshukai in November, and welcomed the 15th generation souke, or Head Master- Ohashi Kenshin, sensei to our dojo for several days of extended training in Mukushin-ryuBujutsu, and a seminar which wasopen to the public. This year, Ohashi sensei arrived from Japan around 11:30pm on Halloween night. The very next morning at 10am we were in the dojo for our first of three 2-hour training sessions that day. The following day, Friday, we held two 3-hour training sessions. A total of 12 hours of training in 2 days… each evening it was a strange feeling of being tired and exhausted from the days training, but not wanting it to end either. On the 3rd day of the koshukai, we held a Mukushin-ryuseminar, open to the public at the Shindai Dojo in Orlando. In all there were 9 students attending. The seminar started off with the basic fundamentals of Mukushin-ryu...how to hold the sword, how power and control are applied, etc., and while some basics may be similar from one style to another, some may be very different. One can’t begin to learn about a style of swordsmanship without first learning it’s basic fundamentals. Students quickly realized that even at the most basic fundamental level, how deep the Mukushin-ryu technique goes. We were able to progress much more quickly from that point on as students soon realized the importance of defense in Mukushin-ryu, along with footwork and sword control and manipulation. Tom Andrews, one of the attendee’s and a student of the Toyama-ryu school in Orlando summed up the experience – “This was my second seminar with Ohashi Sensei, and I was again impressed by sensei’s abilities, in very short order he had each of us sorted out and prepared to learn the lesson of the day. The lesson covered a good amount of kata and kumitachi, but not too

much. Ohashi sensei is very direct, he has a way of making you “see” his sword method, which for those of us who are students of other styles of the sword, is invaluable. I thoroughly enjoyed the seminar…”Ohashi sensei was very happy with the seminar as well, and said he looked forward to seeing everyone again next year. The 4th day brought beautiful weather and the 2012 Orlando Japan Festival. Ohashi sensei and Mukushinryu students from Rising Sun Dojo gave a demonstration on the main stage of various training methods, skills, and techniques used in the Mukushin style. This is always a highlight of sensei’s visit, and is the main reason the Florida Koshukai is always held in November, to coincide with the Japan Festival. Afterwards, as is customary, a potluck dinner party is held at our home with all the Mukushin-ryu students and families along with Ohashi sensei…this is
By Pete Campbell I think my favorite part of the koshukai…where training is put aside, and dojo members and their families all join together as one big extended Mukushin-ryu family. The 5th and final day was primarily a day of rest, and a time for Ohashi sensei to go shopping for souvenirs for family and students back home in Japan. Our last class was held that evening. One student was promoted to shodan, and Ohashi sensei gave his final notes to each student, along with their “homework” for the coming year. The next morning at 6:30am, sensei boarded his return flight to Japan, with the parting words- “one year”…which seems like a long time until his next visit, and such a short time to work on my “homework” and new lessons. DEEPAVALI
Hindu Festival of Lights Compared to other faiths, Hindus observe large number of religious festivals but each has its own importance. Deepavali (aka Diwali), the Festival of Lights is the most important and the well-known celebration of Hindus. This year Deepavali fell on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, and was celebrated in India, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Fiji, U.K, the US, Canada, and other countries. The word Deepavaliis derived from its Sanskrit roots and translates into row of lamps and hence the name, Festival of Lights. The day before Deepavali, also called Naraka Chaturdasi (14th day after full moon) commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna (incarnation of Vishnu) over a demon king called Narakasura. On the day of Deepavali, Hindus worship Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity and wealth) and celebrate Lord Rama’s victory over demon king Ravana (victory of good over evil). Ahead of the celebrations, people prepare their houses by cleaning and white-washing them. Since Deepavali is celebrated on amavasya (new moon) night during the rainy season

in India, oil lamps are lit to brighten the homes. Hindus believe that goddess Lakshmi will visit only a well-lit house. In addition to lighting the oil lamps, people hold lighted sticks and/or light fire crackers. There is a belief that the lighted sticks allow departed souls to find their way to heaven. In western parts of India, Deepavali is considered to be the beginning of a new business year and so new books and accounts are opened after a special prayer. In eastern India goddess Kali is worshipped. In south India, on Deepavali morning, before sun rises, members of the household put oil in the hair and bathe in water. The oil signifies goddess Lakshmi and water is assumed to be from the sacred river Ganges. People put on brand new clothes and jewelry and offer prayers at their own home shrine or at the local temples. Then after breakfast, people visit close relatives’ homes and exchange blessings and sweets. Food is a very important part of Deepavali and therefore there will be plenty of sweets and savories. Many households start their food preparations days ahead of the festivities.
By T. Somasundaram & Bhanu Somasundaram
Children then start lighting fireworks and burst fire crackers. Many young people head to the cinemas as Deepavali is Bollywood’sbiggest opening day so multiple movies will be released. For newlywed couples, their first Deepavali together (called Prime Deepavali) is very important as the groom visits the bride’s house and the couple is treated with specially prepared food and given gifts of clothing, jewelry, and other materials. In all Deepavali is the most popular Hindu festival. It is celebrated both in rural and urban India and even abroad where there is large Indian Diaspora. Members of other faiths also join the celebration since it is truly a joyous festival.
Thayumanasamy Somasundaram is a Hindu. His family has been living in Tallahassee since 1993.

Matsuriza
Disney Cultural Representative Program 2012 Fall Atlanta JapanFest has become the largest Japanese festival in the Southeast, and one of the largest in the United States. This year, the Atlanta JapanFest 2012 was held on Sep 15th and 16th. There were traditional Japanese culture, food stalls, Kimono, Origami, Bonsai, Anime and so on. Also we could enjoy the performance of Taiko, Sumo, Karate, and classical dance. Many people could come in touch with the traditional Japanese culture. In the beginning, Calorina Forest elementary taiko drum started at the stage. The performance of the elementary school children was splendid. “Matsuriza inspired us,” the teacher said. After their performance, there was a great turnout

of them at the Matsuriza work shop. They were highly pleased to talk with Matsuriza performers. Many children bought T-shirts and got the autographs from all the Matsuriza performers. In the afternoon, Matsurizataiko drumming performance began. The performance was an hour, however the audience were attracted by the splendor of their performance. The time passed quickly then. After their performance, the sound of applause and delight filled the theatre. The first day of Japan festival was a great success. On the second day, the number of the visitors was larger than the first day. The festival
drew approximately 17,000 attendees (Saturday: 7,850 attendees & Sunday: 9,150.) I joined the festival with Matsuriza. Many people came to me to say thank you after the performance. I also want to say thank you to all of the people who watched our performance. Their warmhearted message reminds me Japanese soul. I am definitely proud of being Japanese these days. Matsuriza gave me the wonderful opportunity. Hope we continue to introduce our traditional culture to many more people. By Yuka Hara

R&D 100 Awards
- Celebrating 50 Years of Innovations
Each year, R&D Magazine identifies and celebrates the top technology products of the year. The 50th Annual R&D 100 Banquet and Awards Presentation, honoring the 2012 winners, took place at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel at Seaworld, Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 1, 2012. Past winners have included sophisticated testing equipment, innovative new materials, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products, consumer items, and high-energy physics. The day-long events included an exhibition of winning technologies, a formal cocktail reception, and a black-tie banquet and awards presentation. Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) from Taiwan was among one of the award winners. The winning Technologies include Light&Light (A19 LED Light Bulb Technology), AVA-Clamp (Clamp-on voltage and current meter technology), SideLighter (Optical microstructure-based concentrator photovoltaic technology), aePLASMA (Atmospheric environment plasma coating technology), TEMM (Thermoelectric material and module technology) and Lignoxy (Lignin-based polymer technology). Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Many of these have become household names, helping shape everyday life for many Americans. These include the flashcube (1965), the automated teller machine (1973), the halogen lamp (1974), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the Kodak Photo CD (1991), the Nicoderm anti-smoking patch (1992), Taxol anticancer drug (1993), lab on a chip (1996), and HDTV (1998). More recent breakthroughs that have earned R&D 100 Awards include next-generation magnetic resonance imaging machines, laser-based metal-forming tools, and the building blocks for fusion experiments. Bridging the Gap in the Asian American Family, Part 3
Applying the Bible to Asian American Family Life By Evelyn Eng
We must become first-generation countercultural parents. Let’s accept and affirm our children for whom they are, the imperfect Asian Americans that we also are. We can begin a new legacy for them, one that centers on God, and not just the nuances of Asian culture. Let’s allow them the grace to live their lives for God, and not for man (parents) as their first allegiance. Let’s give some freedoms to our children as American parents give, e.g. the freedom to make some mistakes along the way, being ready to guide them and also catch them. This type of parenting, bathing them in prayer and allowing them to think through decision-making while still at home will allow them to choose wisely when they are away from us and face more directly the consequences of their choices. We must choose to guide our children to be as wise as serpents and innocent as doves (Matt 10:16). I believe that God’s Word gives us everything that we need to know about how to live our lives, not only pleasing God, but making peace (as we are able) with all men (Romans 12:18). Living out our Christianity in our families with harmony encourages our children to value the institutions of marriage and family. The Bible has much to say about family and marriage. During Adam’s creation, God said “It is not good for man to be alone.” And God created Eve to be a helper to Adam, declaring “It is very good.” Marriage became the first institution ordained by God. Unsurprisingly, God’s Word also has much to say about families. Children, honor your parents in the Lord for this is right. And if we do so, we will be well and live a long life (Deuteronomy 5:16; Exodus 20:12). Learning to honor our parents and show respect for their opinions even when we disagree is a good place to begin. Obedience as Asian American children turns into honor and respect as we become adults. Men have the responsibility and privilege to be gentle with their wives, love them, and also not to embitter their children with harsh words or actions. (Colossians 3:19-21) We must model our Heavenly Father to our earthly children, giving

them a small glimpse with our imperfect love for them of our Father God’s perfect love for us all. God gives us undeserved grace and truth. Perhaps we of Asian descent overemphasize a false humility, i.e. pride in what we accomplish and what we can achieve, thus taking God out of the equation. We have studied hard to be comfortable financially. But, spiritually, we may be empty. Even attendance and generous financial giving in our churches fail to give us what we desperately hunger for – we have not filled the spiritual vacuums that only God can fill. If we devote ourselves to God, we become countercultural. As Asians, we must learn to walk a balance of Asian and American culture, and present that balance in a healthy way to our children. Appreciation of Asian culture can be seen in family traditions and memories, in celebrating holidays such as Lunar New Year and Harvest Moon Festival. Appreciation of our spiritual culture helps us to admit we aren’t perfect, our children aren’t perfect, and yet God loves us. If God, who created the world, chooses to love us with our imperfections, we must model this kind of love to our children. Sadly, we parents give mixed messages of performance-based acceptance because this is what we have received as children.
If we honor God, God will honor us as parents. A wise woman takes care of the needs of her household and family. “And her children will arise and call us blessed. Her husband also and he will also praise her” (Proverbs 31:28). Following God’s blueprints for the family will give us spiritual blessings beyond measure. Each family will have different applications of how we raise our children, and how we release them. An anonymous quote asks us to give our children both roots and wings – roots to appreciate their foundation, their godly Asian heritage, and wings to let them fly; freedom to go their own way. We can give our children a great heritage by teaching them the truth of God’s Word and also by modeling His grace in everyday life. Not only will our children be content, we will also be pleased as our children build a legacy that will not pass from generation to generation. Our culture will be honored, both as Asians and Christians. Evelyn Eng is an American born Christian Asian with adult children. She is in a unique position to share about bridging the gap in Asian American families. She blogs at christianasianmom.wordpress.com.
