Orange County welcomes the newest Sister City - Taizhou, China  By Asia Trend

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs celebrated the official signing of a sister region agreement with the city of Taizhou, China. A team of six delegates from Taizhou led by Vice Mayor Zhao Yuejin arrived on January 15 and signed the sister region agreement with Mayor Teresa Jacobs on January 16 at the 5th Floor Mayor’s Suite, Orange County Administration Center.

This event is hosted by the Orange County Asian Committee which was formed in 2012 by Mayor Jacobs with a mission to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Asian Americans and to partner with other Asian American organizations in Central Florida.

The delegation received a warm welcome from Mayor Jacobs and her welcoming team. “We are delighted to be able to connect with a city from thousands miles away which shares many common characteristics,” said Zhao Yuejin. Taizhou is about 190 miles south of Shanghai, China, and is dubbed China’s “medical city,” known for hosting major international corporations in pharmaceutical, biomedical and biotech enterprises. Taizhou is also famous for its orange. “Orange County is proud to have developed a strong working relationship with another vital trade partner,” said Mayor Jacobs. “This agreement promotes our joint commitment to collaborate on educational, economic and cultural opportunities.”

World’s Fastest Internet: Hong Kong, S. Korea, and Japan

Asia’s Internet speed is not surprising news, but the details of this recent report on the Internet by Akamai show how much Asia and Hong Kong dominate the world of high speed Internet.

Hong Kong was found to have the highest average peak connection speed of just over 54.1 megabits per second during the third quarter of 2012, according to analysis by Akamai Technologies.

No country previously had gone beyond 50 Mbps. The figure is based on average peak speed across the population of users of traffic registered

by Akamai.

South Korea (48.8), Japan (42.2), Latvia (37.5) and Romania (37.4) were behind Hong Kong in the top 5 list.

“Economic development and democratization should go hand in hand,” Lee told the pro-democracy icon in their meeting focused on economic and educational exchanges between the two countries, according to his spokesman Lee Mi-yon.

Park, who replaces Lee next month, also met with Su Kyi and voiced hope the two countries will make joint efforts for greater freedom and peace in the region, according to her aides.

The Nobel Peace laureate and leader of the National League for Democracy was released from house arrest in 2010 and became a parliamentarian in the by-election in April 2012.

Lee Myung-bak’s official visit to Myanmar is the first by a South Korean president since a bloody attack in 1983 left 21 people dead, including 17 South Koreans. The bombing failed to kill its target, the then-President Chun Doo-hwan who arrived late.

FILIPINO AMERICANS – Discovering Their Past For the Future Orlando, Florida – “FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY Month” is October. The Council For Filipino American Organizations in Central Florida, also known as CFAO, hosted a Filipino American History Month celebration on October 20, 2012 at the Mark Street Community Center in Orlando, a well-attended event. Delegates came from Filipino American organizations from South, North and Central Florida communities. The City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer issued a proclamation declaring October as Filipino American History Month, and October 20 as Filipino American Heritage Day in the City.

To know how Filipinos enriched America, we must first know our history in this country we now call home, and understand the historical tapestry of our presence here. Thus the celebration of our Filipino American History in the month of October by Filipinos all over the United States.

The first Filipino immigrants to the United States came on October 18, 1587. They were seamen jumping ship from the Manila to Acapulco Galleon Trade which began plying the seas in 1565

The galleon trade ships began 4 voyages a year to Acapulco from Manila to procure silver from Mexico and silk from China. The Philippines then, was, for over three centuries, a colony of Spain. The landing party at Moro Bay (now San Jose Obispo in California) included a few Filipino seamen who wanted to escape the brutality of Spanish rule in the Philippines and did not want to go back home. As fugitives, they worked in California vegetable farms, planting asparagus, picking tomatoes and spinach, and grapes.

The actual settlement began in 1763 when fugitive seamen crossed the Gulf of Mexico and landed at the Southeastern bayous of Louisiana.

There they formed 7 Filipino villages, the biggest was Manila Village with 400 seamen. They were hardworking miners, farmers, and railroad workers.

Early immigrants worked in salmon canneries in Alaska, in vegetable fields in California, and the pineapple plantations in Hawaii. They worked in hotels and restaurants and in other major cities where menial jobs were open. Life was harsh. They cannot own properties then,

by law. Discrimination was rampant. It was only when the War Brides Act was enacted that they were able to bring their wives and children to the United States. The government gave workers free transportation for their families to come to the United States plus providing fuel, housing and medical care as incentives.

Life in the Louisiana settlement was different. Filipinos were considered “nationals” and “whites”.

Descendants of these Filipino settlers said there was no discrimination. From the 1930’s, Filipinos were allowed to form fraternal organizations which became the basis of community for Filipinos. The women were allowed to establish businesses and it was through them that we now know what our Filipino heritage was. The ”pensionados” - the Filipino students who were sent to the United States to study - became teachers, nurses and physicians. Integration came as a result of public education. Ethnicity was learned thru the camp life.

for $20 million dollars in 1898 when Admiral Dewey entered Manila Bay and defeated the Spanish Armada.

America brought teachers and educators to the Philippines and sponsored more pensionados to the United States to study how to selfgovern, and to absorb the American way of life.

These pensionados were to return home to share the knowledge they have learned. Some stayed and grew their own families in the United States.

From 1909 to 1939, two thousand workers, the pensionados and other students got a foothold in the U.S. economy which changed and improved their role in the world commerce.

In 1934, President Roosevelt passed the National Recovery Act which allowed collective bargaining. In Alaska, the Filipino workers established cannery worker unions to push for reforms.

The group agitated for change.

In February 1942, U.S. President Roosevelt allowed the formation of the first Filipino Battalion Infantry to fight the war against the Japanese on the side of the Allied Armed Forces of the United States in Europe and the Pacific. In 1943, these

practices – like respect for their elders, and accepting and obeying their sense of authority which kept the Filipino community intact. They took care of their own.

In Hawaii where Filipino workers tilled pineapple plantations, religion played an important role in communities. By and large Christians, they coexisted with other minority groups which practiced their own religion. The impact of Filipino Americans in this State shaped and developed Hawaii as it is today. Ultimately, they participated in the political process that elected a Filipino American as State Governor.

The Filipino American historical contributions to this country is continuing. The generations of Filipino Americans who peopled many parts of this country since 1587 are proud of their ethnicity, heritage and culture. They lived among other ethnic minorities and embraced the American tenets of freedom and democracy. Thus, for 425 years, Filipino Americans became an important ingredient of the “salad bowl” that is America today.

Post 1946, after the Philippines was granted its independence, the immigration quota changed.

More professional Filipinos – doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, skilled artists – moved to the United States and further enriched this country’s socioeconomic and professional vitality.

Filipinos in America had a good support system. Everyone within reach is a relative. Filipino American families adhered to their cultural

International Leadership Foundation Announces 2013 Summer Civic Fellowship Program for Asian Pacific American College Students in Washington, DC

For the fourteenth year, the International Leadership Foundation ILF will award over 30 fellowships to Asian Pacific American college students who the ILF identifies as exhibiting the qualities and potential of a future business, community or professional leaders. The ILF Civic Fellows will spend eight to ten weeks next summer interning at federal government agencies in Washington, DC, gaining firsthand knowledge of the workings of American government.

Any undergraduate or graduate student of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage with at least a 3.0 GPA is eligible to apply. Applicants must be United States citizens. Students who wish to apply must submit their applications by February 1, 2013.

ILF works with government agencies to place each Fellow in a structured summer internships in his or her area of interest. In 2012, ILF Fellows interned in fourteen federal agencies, including Congress and the White House.

ILF Fellows attend weekly seminars and other events to learn about government in addition to their internships. Each Fellow receives a paid internship or $2,000 stipend, funded by the ILF and its sponsors. Students must pay for their own travel, housing and living expenses during their fellowships.

The Honorable Norman Y. Mineta and the Honorable Elaine Chao serve as the Honorary National Chairman and Chairwoman of the ILF. Mineta and Chao were the first two Asian Pacific Americans to serve as Cabinet Secretaries. “The ILF promotes

and fosters bright APA youth to experience the inner-workings behind this great country’s national government, and provides effective training classes to enhance leadership skills,” Secretary Mineta said.

The ILF is a non-profit organization that promotes civic involvement and entrepreneurial spirit of the future leaders of the Asian Pacific American community. Each year at its annual Awards Dinner, the ILF recognizes public service by distinguished APA community leaders. Past honorees include Hawaii Senator Dan Inouye, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Jackie Chan, AIDS activist David Ho, Olympic medalist Tony Dawson and business entrepreneur Kanwal Rekhi.

SPIFFS 38th Annual International Folk Fair was celebrated November 1 - 3, 2012, under clear blue skies in beautiful Vinoy Park downtown St. Petersburg. Around 15,000 visitors attended the celebration and enjoyed a trip around the world in a day. The very first Folk Fair took place in 1976, in conjunction with the US Bicentennial. This year’s theme was “Music around the World”, showcased by more than thirty participating ethnic groups. Ongoing entertainment on two stages featured musical instruments, singers and dancers from around the world. A major feature of Folk Fair is of course all the food specials from all over the world - a great opportunity to learn about a country or ethnic group through food.

The Asian community was represented by Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Korean, Indian, Japanese, Mongolian, Taiwanese, Thai and Vietnamese groups. Musical instruments were displayed and demonstrated in the various villages and food specialties were offered for sampling. The first two days of Folk Fair were dedicated to area schools, with many student groups performing and demonstrating Tai Kwan Do as well as folk dancing and gymnastic shows. Each student was given a passport, which they had stamped in each village and got answers to passport questions relating to the theme of “Music around the World”. A study guide also guided the students around the villages, which specific questions to answer.

On Saturday, November 3, a Citizen Naturalization Swearing-In Ceremony took place after the spectacular Parade of Nations with close to 1,000 paraders in colorful ethnic costumes.

The Youth Empowerment and Leadership Learning Organization (YELL) is hosting its 2nd Annual YELL Conference on March 9, 2013 at the Orange County Convention Center.

YELL is a non-profit organization that started as a Local Ideas Festival from the Bezos Scholars Program. Since its founding in July of 2011, YELL has been established and managed by students who are committed to its mission: shaping tomorrow’s leaders by encouraging confidence, demonstrating their importance to the world, and guiding them to realize their full potential. Through community service projects and organized volunteer events, YELL sets the foundation for leadership in the lives of youth today.

The YELL Conference will feature keynote speakers from a variety of fields, but all under the theme of leadership. There will also be booths to showcase business vendors of Central Florida. Last year, with over 300 students attending the inaugural YELL Conference, we established a high standard and are confident to double attendance this year with additional outreach and sponsorships.

As Star 5 is earth in nature, the fire element is to be avoided altogether.

Wood also would destroy earth - so green and red cannot be seen anywhere near Star 5.

This year Star 5 is located in the southeast sector.

Many of my clients found they were diagnosed with terminal illnesses in the year that Star 5 was located in their bedroom. But don’t panic if you find your bedroom is located here. Star 5 does not work unless your life elements already predispose you to such illnesses.

Judo Training Camp

for Elite Judo Competitors On January 5, 2013, Metro Orlando Judo Kai hosted a special winter training camp for some of Florida’s elite Junior and Senior Judo competitors.

The training camp was co-sponsored by Florida Judo, Inc., which is the state affiliate of USA Judo.

USA Judo is the national governing body for the sport of Judo in the United States and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee. In 1964 Judo was the first martial art to be recognized as a sport in the Olympics. After soccer, Judo is the most practiced sport throughout the world. Though a few US Judo competitors have won gold medals in world championships before, it wasn’t until this summer in London where Kayla Harrison won the first ever Olympic gold medal for the US. Florida Judo has produced many top level national and international Judo competitors, including several past Olympians. Metro Orlando

Judo Kai has hosted many special training camps over the past couple of years designed to help foster the development of talented Judo competitors throughout Florida. Prior to this training camp Metro Orlando Judo Kai hosted a training camp with former Tokai University Judo team member Sensei Takahide Haraguchi. Metro Orlando Judo Kai has developed a special relationship with Tokai University, Japan’s number one university for Judo. Tokai University Judo has produced some of the greatest Judo competitors in the history of Judo, including many Olympic and World champions. Metro Orlando Judo Kai regularly hosts visiting Judo instructors from Tokai University, and Tokai University Judo also provides unique training and exchange opportunities in Japan for Metro Orlando Judo Kai students.

The winter training camp was attended by

more than 100 participants, coming from more than 13 different Judo clubs throughout Florida.

The camp is going to be featured in a sports news story by the international news agency Al Jazeera, which will be broadcasting the story in English, Arabic, French, and Spanish. Two of the dignitaries attending the training camp were 2012 assistant US Olympic Judo coach Jhonny Prado of Ki Itsu Sai Judo club in Miami, and Florida Judo, Inc. President Dr. Ricardo Menendez of Falcon Judo club. Also in attendance was 2004 US Olympic Judo team member Rhadi Ferguson. The strongest Judo competitors in Florida come from the Miami area, which has benefited greatly from the immigration of many of Cuba’s best Judo coaches to South Florida over the past years. Metro Orlando Judo Kai was also honored to have Dr. Jeffery Stout attend the training camp.

Dr. Stout is an expert in sports nutrition, and is the head coach for the University of Central Florida’s Judo club, as well being an Associate Professor at the university. One of the guest instructors at the training camp was Mr. Tonka Cruz, from Jacksoville Judo Ryu club. Mr. Cruz is a several time US National Judo champion. Also instructing at the training camp were four of Metro Orlando Judo Kai principle instructors: Wiktor Biernacki, Sameh Zineldin, Juan Rengifo, and Doug Clark.

Mr. Biernacki was a former Polish national team member and Olympic team alternate, and Mr. Zineldin was an Egyptian national champion and Egyptian national team captain. Metro Orlando Judo Kai is very fortunate to have been able to attract world class instructors and black belts to our Judo club. In addition to Mr. Biernacki and Mr. Zineldin, our staff also includes Ms Betty Stamm,

the 1992 US Women’s Olympic Team manager and one of the highest ranking US women in Judo. We are also very fortunate to have as an assistant Judo instructor, and as a sponsor, Mr. Chau Nguyen, owner of Central Florida’s famous Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar. Also with Metro Orlando Judo Kai are former Judo national champions and international competitors from Cuba, Colombia, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Lebanon, Romania, Italy, the Netherlands, Vietnam, France, and of course the US. In the past, Metro Orlando Judo Kai has produce junior Judo competitors that have placed in state, national, and even international judo tournaments. Intensive training is the key to the success according to the coach.

The team practices two hours five days a week for two months prior to each race. Dragon boating is a team sport which no single person can stand out to be a hero. Every one of the paddlers has to in perfect synchronization in order to perform well. No matter how well one person can paddle if one cannot help other teammates to excel, the boat will not go any further.

Sumo~Japan’s national sport (martial arts)~ Vol.1 相撲－日本の国技  By Teri Mitchell

Sumo is one of the Shinto ritual and Sumo wrestling tournaments are held in the precincts of shrines on their festival day among the local residents in various districts in Japan. Sumo has been performed even for fortune-telling, praying for a good harvest. It is regarded as a performance which healthy strong men play fair and strive (do their very best) in front of gods to demonstrate respect and gratitude to gods. Courtesy and etiquette are taken very seriously in Sumo.

Sumo is also a competitive full-contact wrestling sport (martial arts) where a wrestler (Rikishi) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (Dohyō) or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet.

Asian American Students’ Adjustment To College:

Does Membership in an Ethnic Student Organization Make a Difference?

A diverse population of students attends UCF, including international students from different countries. At UCF, there are over three hundred registered student organizations. The goals of ethnic student organizations are to reduce intergroup biases by promoting a sense of comfort among diverse ethnic minority students and the European Americans, and to provide minority students with leadership development and extracurricular opportunities.

My research project examined whether or not Asian American students who participate in Asian-focused student organizations are more “adjusted” (i.e., academically, emotionally attached to institution, feeling connected socially with others at the institution), than Asian American students who are not members of ethnic-fo-

cused organizations. Among 117 Asian American college students, it was confirmed that students who were members of ethnic student organizations (ESOs) were more enculturated, meaning they were more informed about their own culture and people. Also, students who were not members of ESOs were more acculturated, meaning they were more focused on learning about aspects of the American culture. Further analysis showed that ESO membership was associated with stronger levels of adjustment, which in turn was associated with lower levels of stress.

Results suggest a clear advantage to students—in this case—Asian American students— who are members of student organizations that promote and nurture students’ ethnically based identity and culture. These results are consistent

with other research that has found that students, particularly minority students, who join ESOs, are more likely to adapt to the demands of college, feel connected to the larger university community, and ultimately graduate. Results such as these should bolster university efforts to establish and support ESOs for students, particularly minority students. In a cautious way, I perceive these findings to offer modest support in favor of the establishment, maintenance, and promotion of ESOs. International Martial Arts Festival The Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida was the setting stage for the 2012 International Martial Arts Festival Nov. 2 and 3rd where all martial arts styles were represented and competitors from around the world come to test their skills and made long-lasting connections and friendships. The organizer, Dave Sklar has hosted this for over 10 years.
