2012 Year of Dragon—
General Reading for 12 Chinese Zodiacs - part 1 By Master Wanxuanji Rat General Comment: RAT has a good affiliation with DRAGON. It is believed that there will be significant improvement in work/ study and affection (particularly for female) this year. 1. Wealth and Career - Because of the help of “gui ren” (people who give help), you will make a lot of money this year. However, you have to take care of your relationship with your colleagues, partners, and your subordinates. Otherwise, you will find yourself in trouble due to the unnecessary disputes. 2. Affection and Love - It is a good year for you to get married if you are in love. If you have no lover now, you will meet someone with whom you will fall in love. 3. Health - “ji xing” (good star) will bless the RAT this year. However, you still need to care of your dietary.
Tiger General Comment: It will be a restless and difficult year in all areas. Hardly you can make good achievement as “hung xing” (bad star) affects the TIGER all year round. Be lawabiding in doing things or you will be in trouble. Take care of your old parents. 1. Wealth and Career - Money will be spent not in you own will nor can be save in the way you hope. Conflicts with others will annoy you much. 2. Affection and Love - Learn to be a good listener to avoid further deterioration in the relationship with your love ones. For those unmarried, it is not a good year to get married. 3. Health - Beware of accident especially traffic accident. Take care of the health of the old TIGER.
Rabbit
Ox
General Comment: It will be a stable year for the OX. Yet, OX needs to be more patient and more courage to overcome the hurdles ahead. 1. Wealth and Career - Beware of the imbalance of intake and expense. So you should caution to lend your money to your friends. There will be challenge ahead. Be patient and humble in working with your colleagues. 2. Affection and Love - Comparatively, man is better than woman in this area. Patient is undoubtedly the prime character you need to have to avoid conflict. 3. Health - Ox is in general in good condition except the old OX. Beware of the weather changes between seasons.
year’s.

However, you may find yourself sometimes uncomfortable. Try to do some exercises that will help to you to get relief.
Dragon: General Comment: DRAGON this year is said to obstruct “Tai Sui” (Grand Jupiter). Moreover, there are some “hung xing” that affect the DRAGON. Definitely, this is a very difficult year. Fasten your seat belt for the bumpy ride! 1. Wealth and Career - You will spend a lot unexpectedly this year. Moreover, try to avoid conflicts with your supervisors. Otherwise, you will be in great trouble. 2. Affection and Love - It is not easy to find a love this year. For those married, you have to take care of your relationship with your spouse. 3. Health - Under the destructive force of “hung xing”, many will find not feeling well throughout the year. Old DRAGON needs to be more careful.
Snake: General Comment: It is a stable year and everything almost goes as usual. However, due to the impact of some “hung xing”, you better pay more attention on your health. 1. Wealth and Career - Do not put your stake on high risk investment. No great change in your career. 2. Affection and Love - You may find your love if you have not married. If you are married, you need to be more careful in dealing with your spouse. 3. Health - The SNAKE is affected by “sick star”. You need to take care of yourselves and possible do more exercises. Question: The All-Star Game was in Orlando in 1992. What’s different about this AllStar year?
Asia Trend Q&A with
Gail Hunter, Senior Vice President, Events and Attractions, National Basketball Association (NBA)
By Gail Rayos
Basketball greats past and present, and tens of thousands of NBA fans will descend on Orlando in late February for the 61st NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Amway Center. In advance of the major sporting event, including the premier fan-interactive event NBA All-Star Jam Session, NBA executive Gail Hunter gave us a sneak peek at what is in store for the community.
GH: There has been an incredible amount of growth in NBA All-Star since 1992 and we’re excited to showcase all of the amazing attractions and talent that will be in Orlando in late February. One of the things that will be new since the last time Orlando hosted the All-Star Game is NBA All-Star Jam Session. It’s a fun; interactive event for fans throughout the community and will open on Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Orange County Convention Center. Additionally, we now have three leagues -- NBA, WNBA, NBA Development League – with star players representing each league during All-Star Weekend. Over the course of the week, we will be celebrating the game, interacting with fans and giving back to the community, so this is an exciting time. We’re thrilled to bring one of the signature sporting events of the year to Orlando, a premier entertainment destination with a new, state-of-the-art arena, a wide array of hospitality options and a vibrant, diverse community known for its spirit. Q: What other events besides the All-Star Game can Orlando expect? GH: NBA All-Star really has something for everyone. The fun begins Saturday, Feb. 18, with NBA All-Star E-Recycling presented by Sprint at Orlando Festival Park. As part of the NBA’s overall greening and sustainability efforts, the NBA and Sprint have teamed up with the City of Orlando and Green Works Orlando to offer fans the opportunity to responsibly recycle unwanted electronic products such as cell phones, computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers and fax machines at this one day recycling event. Fans dropping off their old electronics will receive free tickets to NBA All-Star Jam Session.

Families will want to be sure to attend the Gatorade Invitational Tournament to support local school teams as they compete to play the Finals Championship game on the same court that the NBA All-Stars practice on Center Court at Jam Session.
Q: Who do the many events leading up to the All-Star Game appeal to? GH: As you can see, there is something for everyone and there are ways for everyone to get involved in the NBA All-Star excitement. ness of Japanese traditional and pop culture. This year, the 2nd annual A Night in Tokyo theme was Japanese Street Style. Bob Cal, USF J-Club’s public relations coordinator who helped coordinate the event, was excited for the success of the show. “We’re so lucky to have Gosia’s help. She put in so much of her time.” According to Gosia Erbele, the event’s professional stylist said a large scale Japanese Street Style Fashion show had never been seen in Tampa. “It will be exciting to be the first event to do it,” said Cal. Erbele had also been featured in Tampa Bay’s Fashion Week, ABC’s Extreme Makeover and other fashion weeks across Europe. YesStyle, an international Asian clothing website provided some of the fashion attire, which was also paired with the model’s own clothing for the runway.

Supporting performances of the event included demonstrations from the USF Shotokan Karate Club, USF Judo Club and USF Aikido Club. The USF Korean American Student Association dance crew performed dances from popular Korean, Japanese and Chinese Pop song routines. Special musical guests were native Tokyo J-Pop singer Chii Sakurabi and Koto player Mayumi Hopkins. All guests were served complimentary soup and salad, noodles, fried rice and sushi. The vendors included Asian restaurants from the Tampa Bay area such as Soho Sushi, Ryuu Japanese Steakhouse, Lee House, Kobe Steakhouse, Chopstix, Ho Ho Choy, Yummy House, China Express and Sake House. To Date or Not to Date
By Evelyn Eng
Boundaries in Dating by Henry Cloud and John Townsend and How to Interview Your Daughter’s Date by Dennis Rainey. Teenagers are appalled that parents expect so much academically, but won’t allow going to a school dance or for frozen yogurt or bobo tea. Parents should have deliberate rules about what they will allow for different age children. Personally I’d encourage teenage group dating activities without pairing up. Thankfully, school taught me about upcoming changes in my body during puberty. My mom did not mention it to me. Parents should not allow their children to experience these hormonal changes without preparation. Otherwise, children get their information and beliefs from potentially unreliable sources. Cultural embarrassments aside, Asian parents need to communicate, preparing children socially for adulthood. One potential cause of conflict in Asian American families concerns dating and sexuality. Our society encourages youthful dating. While dating once began in high school or college, it is now common to notice the opposite sex and “going together” begins even in elementary school. Asian parents have a range of opinions up to either of two extremes: no acknowledgement of this area until college or later or complete permissiveness because they are “just friends.” Either extreme requires re-evaluation. I recommend two books to form your conviction – I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris and I Gave Dating a Chance by Jeramy Clark. Harris advocates not dating and uses the courtship model after a man is financially, spiritually and emotionally mature to care for a wife. Clark describes his book as a balanced biblical perspective. Harris gave up dating and followed the courtship model after numerous times he regretted going “too far” with young women. On this note, other recommended resources include

While her parents worked, one gal brought her boyfriend home to hang out. Sadly, with no accountability, natural consequences resulted in regrets for succumbing to temptations. Another teen’s lament was that her parents wouldn’t allow dating during her high school years. Does getting straight A’s allow time for fun activities, like dating? There may be danger in not giving children freedoms while still living at home. Once children leave for college, many Asian students rebel by partying and choosing new freedoms that were not allowed while living under their parents’ watchful eyes. Communication is the key to avoid conflict. Growing up in American culture, they see the availability of school dances, their friends dating and other social events. Should Asian parents restrict such activities? Even Amy Chua’s* tiger mother parenting which allowed for no playdates, no sleepovers, … has been modified to allow her freshman daughter Lulu a birthday sleepover party. And her oldest Sophia has blogged about her
boyfriend, so amidst her studies, she is allowed some social time. Parents who refuse to discuss sexuality and dating with their children may regret it. Children will find ways to discuss it out of curiosity. If it’s a taboo subject at home, they will get their information from peers or browse the Internet. Parents need to be proactive especially if they desire to share some moral perspectives. One solution is to offer a book which talks about how babies are born as a starting point when read together. Discussion of this topic and the morality that accompanies it is crucial information before the child is confused and tempted by his own hormones. Our society is advocating sex before marriage – sex is now overtly shown on television and movie screens as a natural expression of love. Many romantic comedies involve falling in love with someone else’s spouse. As Christians, biblical convictions guide our family in such areas. For Asians, the problems may be more than selection of a Christian mate. Should we allow our children to date people of any race, especially non-Asians? Are we allowed to control this? Lack of understanding of Western culture has made many Asians suspicious of non-Asians. The reality is that we live in America, and it is quite possible that Asian American children will marry non-Asians or possibly live with them before marriage. This merits discussion in the home as we share with our children our personal convictions and why we believe them. God has given us children as a blessing, to be good stewards raising them responsibly. We need to offer freedom to ask questions about their own sexuality, dating desires and other hard issues. No matter how we choose to restrict their social life, we must be ready to guide them in the social aspects of their lives. “To date or not to date?” is not really the issue. We should discuss with our children the following questions, “When should you date?” “What do you do on dates?” and “How do you choose your dating partners?” This is what will prepare our children for life and marriage. *author of The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

Peer Pressure
By Jessica Chen
I shifted my weight onto one foot looking for a comfortable position, then to the other. I soon discovered that this was as futile as finding an empty parking spot at Walmart on Black Friday and resigned, centeringmyself, shoulders hunched and fingernails engraving my palms. I looked enviously behind me at the dark corner of the stage that my voice had fled to, leaving the frail cocoon of an eight year old girl on stage. What did she expect me to say? This isn’t what I’m supposed to be talking about. This isn’t what I practiced either. “I-I’m not sure what you mean,” I finally forced out, barely louder than the microphone static. “Have you ever experienced any kind of peer pressure? How have you dealt with it? What’s your advice for other kids as the winner of the Drugs Abuse Resistance Education contest? Just say what you feel,” my principal beamed. Silence had become the audience’s wellknown friend. I shrugged. “No, not really,” I responded. More silence. The audience’s hesitant applause cued my dash from the stage faster than any P.E. activity ever saw me move. As I sat down, my eyes steamed in frustration at myself. Of course I had experienced peer pressure—perhaps not drugs just yet; every day for lunch, I brought in a container of steamed rice, eggs, and stranger fare, sitting next to my classmates who had neat little trays of pizza, spaghetti, and my favorite, chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes, each glint of grease gloriously screaming American while my rice whispered oddball. Snack time soon saw bags of smiling goldfish and cheetahs… and my bag of salted seaweed. Through working diligently on all of my homework, I quickly understood everything I was learn-
ing, but out of some crippling attempt at humility, never spoke or answered any of the questions in class. Picture day saw my mom dress me up in a qipao, a traditional Chinese dress. Possibly most irritating was when my classmates would come up to me and talk to me as though I were deaf or as though I desired more of their lunch remnants cleverly stored in pockets of their cheeks upon my face. “YOU… SPEAK … ENGLISH? YOU… FROM...CHINA?” Crude gestures such as pulling at their eyelids accompanied each labored word. “Really, given your speech, I think that’s the question I should be asking you, you British” I thought and died to say, but true to form, responded with only a weak smile and departure that in retrospect probably further confirmed their theories.I was scared to talk, thinking that I was too different. I was the “quiet, smart, Chinese girl,” the Asian stereotype personified. I begged to become American, to partake in eating the same greasy lunches, wearing the same cool bell bottom jeans and chokers, being the first instead of the last girl chosen to be on the kickball team, and sharing jokes in class that would have all of the class laughing. What I didn’t realize was that I never really wanted to be American; what I wanted to become was understood. I wasn’t really the quiet Chinese girl. In fact, I was an aspiring voyager of the skies, borderline compulsive reader of tales of high seas, fantastic feats, and glorious adventures, a Steve Irwin-like lizard catcher, and quite the mischief maker at home. I liked my rice and fish—and didn’t care much for school pizza. It wasn’t really the “Asian stereotype” that confined me, but rather, myself. How would they know about how I could, at the very least, speak Eng-

lish, but how I also found the best climbing tree in my backyard if I never talked and if they never understood? The next day, I complimented my friend Amy on her decorations on her pencil box, showing her mine. Slowly, I was no longer that Chinese girl. Friends oohed, aahed, and that’s –so-cooled over the various fans, paintings, and Chinese items I would bring on show-and-tell days. I taught them how to phonetically write their names in Chinese. They taught me kickball and the monkey bars. At the same time, we shared the same childhood jokes about how our history teacher shone, especially when his bald spot aligned with the glaring fluorescents above, squealed over the latest fuzzy toys, and did everything that kids do together. What I didn’t realize then was that what I had blamed on the stereotype was truly the stereotype I had created for myself. Sure, throughout the years, I have still received some mostly insensitive comments, but so what? I conversed with whoever took the time to listen and learned just as much about their cultures as they did about mine. At lunch, I tried rice with jambalaya, gyros, kebabs, samosas, and chicken nuggets. Really, it’s not so much peer pressure as it is peer sharing. I’m not so much Asian or American as I am Asian American.

The Fried Tempura Ice Cream Dessert Monster roll at Bayridge Sushi

at new Bayridge Sushi and Steakhouse in Avalon Park In a dining room out in East Orlando, deep in the downtown area of Avalon Park, families and friends gather around a grill table-top to watch a young, playful hibachi chef twirl his metal spatula and light a sliced onion into a flaming onion volcano. The young children stare with wide eyes at the hibachi chef as the volcano extinguishes and the chef slices up the vegetables and mix the fried rice, butter, and meats together for their plates. Bayridge Sushi and Steakhouse serves up these wonders for families and friends each day at their restaurant in Avalon Park. The new hibachi and sushi restaurant recently opened its doors and has been enjoying much success from local patrons. Bayridge Sushi and Steakhouse has a very sleek, modern, upscale ambiance with smooth black table tops and lit by colorful neon lights. The restaurant hosts a lively bar area with a large drink selection and table tops for diners waiting for a spot in the hibachi / teppanyaki area or the main sushi dining area. The restaurant tends to get noisy with the chatter and talk around the room. The hibachi area has 6 tables with about 20 seats each table and a separate dining area with a nice sushi bar and padded back table seats. One of the special items for the hibachi grill in addition to chicken, steak, filet mignon, is the duck breast which is quite popular. The service here is attentive; waiters visit often and are courteous, although it may take a while for some dishes to prepare especially in busy periods. For appetizers, we chose the Sushi Dumpling, made with sushi white fish and tuna fried in a xiumai like wonton wrapping shell. The Spicy Tuna-tini appetizer was a very

interesting and unique appetizer made from chunks of spicy tuna in a sesame oil base on top of seaweed salad all inside a martini glass (p.s. it’s a non-alcoholic appetizer). For sushi rolls, we try the Sexy Lobster roll made with tempura lobster, asparagus, avocado, lettuce, tobiko, almonds, black sesame seed with chef’s special sauce, the Monster Roll, made with tempura shrimp avocado & cream cheese roll with tempura shredded crab, scallion, spicy powder on the top, and the Super Crunch roll made with spicy tuna on the top of a tuna and cream cheese avocado roll. The rolls are all very large and filling, with complements to the 2 sushi chefs who rocked it out behind the sushi bar and handled all the sushi requests for the restaurant. They will probably need to add extra sushi chefs in the future for the increased demand. For dessert we ordered the traditional ice cream tempura, a sweet and delicious way to end the meal. Overall, the Bayridge Sushi and Steakhouse restaurant is a great addition to East Orlando and especially the Avalon Park neighborhood. I can see it being very popular for a long time if their service continues to improve and their ingredients stay fresh and tasty. Bayridge Sushi and Steakhouse at Avalon Park is the third location for the premium Japanese restaurant, joining its sister restaurants in Apopka and Longwood. REACH Shares Holiday Spirit at Harbor House Despite the many activities we participated in last year, REACH still continued to promote the annual holiday toy drive for needy children and families at Harbor House of Central Florida, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. With help from generous community members, we collected over 320 toys and necessities this year – an increase compared to our success last year! On December 19th, REACH members traveled to Harbor House to hand out toys to the children and play Christmas music for the families to enjoy. It was heartwarming to see that every child was able to receive a toy they liked that night. Seeing the bright smiles on their faces was a reward in itself. This experience not only benefitted the children but also REACH members. We got the opportunity to reflect about our own lives. Living in a materialistic world, we often assume that happiness comes from the things we get--iPads, new cell phones, the latest video games. However, going to Harbor House and being able to see how these simple gifts brightened up the children’s day taught us a valuable lesson that we will not forget: to be grateful for what we already have.

Harbor House also had a treat for REACH. The new Children’s Center was finally open. The center was beautiful, spacious, and vibrant. The center allows the children to learn and just be kids in a safe environment. Seeing how much of a difference Harbor House has made for these kids and their families - it’s truly an honor to support the needs of Harbor House. On behalf of REACH, I would like to thank China Garden, Global Media, CHEP finance department, REMAX, local high schools, and many other generous businesses and supporters for supporting our toy drive. And with financial support from organizations such as, the Asian American Heritage Council, CHARGE Dragon Boat Team – Orlando, the Chinese American Association of Central Florida, Citrus Skating Club, Florida College of Integrative Medicine, and Teens Go Green, we were able to collect over $200 to purchase toys and necessities for the families at Harbor House. We appreciate all your support! Have a wonderful new year!
I have done toy drive volunteer work before, a Christmas toy drive with the salvation army. The level of organization and resources they had to create a successful toy drive really impressed me, and I thought it would’ve been incredibly difficult to be able to conduct one successfully. The Harbor House toy drive turned out spectacular. The amount of toys that the volunteers had accumulated from schools and other locations was amazing. The trip to Harbor House itself was quite the experience too. It was good to see that people who have suffered and been in hard times are still treated so well by such organizations. The toy drive made me realize that it doesn’t take much from one person to help another extraordinarily. - Ben Liu, Secretary of REACH

Mukushin-ryu Seminar and Workshop organized by Rising Sun Dojo / Mukushin-ryu Bujutsu U.S. Branch, is a one day seminar and workshop on the principals and techniques of Mukushin-ryu iai-jutsu and ken-jutsu. On November 5th, fifteen students and instructors from several different dojo’s and styles attended and learned valuable experience from Sensei Ohashi Kenshin, who is the 15th souke (means top master of a particular style) of Mukushin-ryu. He has been studing martial arts for 40 years, holding high rank in several other sword styles as well as aikdo, judo, yari (a type of haliberd), and kendo. kushin-ryu, but how to incorporate it’s principals into everyday living. Mukushin-ryu Bujutsu is a style founded in the early 1470’s fuedal Japan. It’s principals and techniques were created to keep you alive, not just in practice. This is the main difference between iai-do, or batto-do, and iai-jutsu. Mukushin-ryu teaches iai-jutsu and ken-jutsu. Mukushin-ryu is a bujutsu, meaning in addition to the training with the sword, students train with the jo (staff), han-jo (half staff), shuriken (throwing spike), yari, and tai-jutsu (open hand).

In contrast to many of the more modern styles of iaido today which focus on performing the “perfect” cut on a stationary target, Mukushin does not make the “perfect 45° cut” the goal, but rather the result of proper movement and technique. The Mukushin student realizes that the ability to cut means very little if you don’t live long enough to execute it. Proper footwork, distance, and spirit are paramount to achieving this. 2nd Annual Asian Community Health Fair
By Kristina Huang
This holiday is season is finally done after a month filled with company parties and delicious delights. Now we moved into the New Year and ask ourselves what we want to accomplish in 2012.
Dr. Wang gave the audience a first hand look on making a fresh cup of American ginseng tea with kochi berries. This simple remedy can be made by anyone in minutes at the comfort of one’s kitchen.
betes, and cholesterol tests from Tampa General Hospital. Also, we cannot forget about the Hillsborough County Health Department who provided educational resources about women, infant, and childcare.
Our biggest New Year’s resolution is to spread the latest knowledge of health to you.
One question asked, “How is drinking American ginseng tea effective for the body?” Supposedly, drinking one cup a day will help maintain the overall body by quenching the thirst of the mind and calming the mind.
Our final guest, Patrick Cannon, from Florida Chain educated the audience about the new affordable healthcare act plan in 2014. The idea behind this plan is to provide insurance plans to small businesses looking to expand their coverage for their employees. Keep in mind that children can stay on a parent’s plan until the age of 26 and that there is no denial of coverage for preexisting conditions.
On December 10, 2011, three Tampa Bay area chamber of commerce’s hosted the 2nd Annual Asian Community Health Fair at the USF Westside Conference Center. The Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay, the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay spent an entire afternoon advocating ways to maintaining a healthy body and mindset. With the New Year around the corner these organizations wanted to give the community an early start on a healthy new years resolution. Three healthcare professionals along with healthcare providers were invited to participate in this yearly event. Dr. Zuozhen Wang kept the audience questioning the effects of herbal medicine on the internal balance of the body.

Ozōni お雑煮
By Teri Mitchell
~ The very first meal of the new year in Japan ~ January 1st is the day we eat Ozōni for the insuring of a happy new year to come. Every morning of New Year’s Day, my mom cooked Ozōni and we ate it together as the first meal of the new year. It’s a very common tradition in Japan. Ozōni (お雑煮) is a Mochi (rice cakes) soup cooked with vegetables and other foods such as chicken or Kamaboko fish cakes. The ingredientsvary according to various regions in Japan, but the essential Mochi is always present. It is said that Ozōni finds its roots in Bushi (also called Samurai) society cuisine. It is thought to be a meal that was cooked during field battles, boiled together with Mochi, vegetables
and dried foods, among other ingredients. It is also generally believed that this original meal, at first exclusive to Bushi (Samurai), eventually became a staple food of the common people. As for ways of cooking the soup, different regions in Japan sport many variations, but in most cases it is either clear soup (Sumashi-jiru) flavoured with Dashi (stock made from dried bonito or Konbu seaweed) and soy sauce or Miso soup. My favorite Ozōni is with Abura-age, Konnyaku, Shiitake and Kamaboko in Sumashijiru.Adding Komatsuna (similar to spinach) and carrots would be good, too. Ozōni literally means
“various ingredients boiled together”, so basically you can put whatever you like in your Ozōni. Abura-age: Deep-fried bean curd (soybean product) Konnyaku: Also known as konjak, konjaku, konnyaku potato, devil’s tongue, voodoo lily, snake palm, or elephant yam
