REACH of Central Florida Annual Toy Drive  By Karen Sun, Winter Park High School Coordinator - REACH

Now is the season of giving, and as a whole, REACH certainly did. REACH promoted its annual holiday toy drive for the Harbor House of Central Florida, an organization that provides a safe home for abused women and children. With ample help from various community members, we collected over 400 toys, 421 to be exact, which numbers more than last year! On December 19, REACH members visited the Harbor House to help the children and their mothers choose toys and accessories that they liked as well as play some Christmas music to help set the holiday spirit. It was gratifying to see the children pick up the toys they wanted and see how happy seemingly simple gifts made them. We can’t help but reflect on our own lives. We think that with more things like the latest Apple product, or video game comes happiness, but upon helping these families at the Harbor House, we have to remem-

ber to be thankful for what we have.

As a community, we may perhaps underestimate what Harbor House does for the community, but it really does provide a wonderful service to victims of domestic abuse. As an organization, it really gives a lot to make sure that the families are safe, as well as comfortable and welcome.

On behalf of REACH, I would like to thank the students from Winter Park High School, Cypress Creek High School, and University High School, as well as other Central Florida schools for helping to promote the toy drive and encouraging their peers to donate toys. I also would like to thank Asia Trend, Inc., CHARGE Dragon boat Team of Orlando, the Chinese School of CAACF, the Chinese America Association of Central Florida, Citrus Figure Skating club, and the Florida College of Integrative Medicine for participating

in this holiday toy drive. Also, to China Garden, Law Office of Agnes Chau, PA, Pauline Ho CPA Office, Winter Park High School’s Orchestra and Asian American Association, thank you for allowing REACH to leave boxes in your venues to collect toys for these children and their families.

Karen Sun is currently a student in Winter Park High School’s International Baccalaureate Program. She is an active participant in several clubs at WPHS including Asian American Association, Beta Club, Tri-M, and Model UN. She enjoys playing violin (being in Winter Park’s Park Philharmonic makes her extremely happy) and reading books on some sort of science, though mainly chemistry.

In the future, she plans on studying either biomedical engineering or biochemistry.

Central Florida Asian Students Recognized Orlando, Florida ---The ASIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COUNCIL of Central Florida held its annual “Asian American Student Achievers Awards” at the Orlando City Hall Council Chambers on November 9th 2012. Students were given scholastic awards and recognized in the categories of academic achievement, preservation of ethnic culture and language, non-academic accomplishments, and community service.

Some 52 area students participated in this annual challenge to excel.

City and County government officials were there to witness the presentations and the cultural program at the City Hall Rotunda among which are Commissioners Patty Sheehan and Tony Ortiz, and the City’s Multicultural Department Head Luis Martinez.

Cultural program performers include the Chinese American Association Dance Troupe, and traditional dances from Japan, India, Vietnam, and Thailand. The youth group R.E.A.C.H. presented a magic number.

Someone once wrote that “diversity is a part of the natural order of things, as natural as the trillion shapes and shades of the flowers of spring or the leaves of autumn.� To deny diversity, the writer contends, is to deny life with all its richness and manifold opportunities. And so he advocates diverse America to be tolerant, to live and let live, to understand that those who cause no harm should not be feared, ridiculed, or harmed, even if they are different. The Council, through its various com-

munity programs, especially those targeting its Asian youths in its annual scholastic awards, subscribes to the tenet that one should rise above prejudice and care with each other and their neighbors.

International Leadership Foundation, Florida Advisory Board formed on 12-12-2012 On December 12, 2012, the ILF’s Florida National Advisory Board was formed in the Central Florida. The 16 Florida National Advisors are Susan Yan, Johnson Young, Janey Cheng, Joe Wang, Maywa Yei, Shun-Chi Huang, Isabella Zhang, George Huang, Oliver Fang, Peter Kung, Brenda Muh, Wenhong He, Bruce Chai, Michell Liu, Peida Yan, & Shirley Chen.

Special guests include Chiling Tong—The Chief Executive Officer from Washington, DC, Wu xiaoyan—Seattle National Advisor, Eric Kung—Detroit National Advisor, Huang Zheng—California National Advisor, and Abraham Li—Director of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami.

International Leadership Foundation The International Leadership Foundation (ILF) is a

non-profit organization that promotes the civic awareness, public service and economic effectiveness of the Asian-Pacific American (APA) community. ILF formed in 1999. The mission is to develop young leaders in the United States, Asia, and other Pacific-rim countries in the fields of public service, entrepreneurship and the international arena through a network of business and community leaders.

ILF has provided scholarships and leadership training for over 1,200 select APA college students from across the country over the past 12 years. The Washington D.C. Civic Fellowship is the nation’s most prestigious civic leadership development program designed specifically to foster the next generation of APA leaders. Each year, approximately 35 outstanding college students are awarded an ILF fellowship. Each Fellow participates in a supervised training program, including a public service internship and regular seminars, to learn how to access government and public policy to help the community. ILF also sponsors approximately 120 additional college students each year for leadership training, in conjunction with other leading APA organizations. General Reading for 12 Chinese Zodiacs RAT General Comment: RAT has wonderful times this year. It is believed that there will be significant improvement in work/study and affection this year.

1. Wealth and Career - The situation will be much better than last year’s because you are being protected by three very powerful “ji xing (吉星)”, namely “sui lu (歲祿)” , “long de (龍德)” and “zi wei (紫微)”. “Sui lu” helps you working happily and making a lot of money. Moreover, you will always find someone to help you when you are in trouble under the blessing of “long de” and “zi wei”. Yet, you need to be humble or otherwise you will face unnecessary disputes with others.

2. Affection and Love - It is a good year for you to get married if you are in love. If you have no lover now, you will meet someone with whom you will fall in love.

3. Health - You have to take care of yourself this year. You need to know the importance of work-life balance. If you feel something wrong in your health, go to find a doctor immediately.

OX

General Comment: It seems it is a good year for OX without considering the influence of the “hung xing ( 凶星)”. In fact, OX needs to be more patient to overcome the hurdles ahead.

1. Wealth and Career - You will find more difficult this year. In particular, you find everything running not so smooth as before. Even your partners cannot give you much help. It is mainly due to the impact of the “hung xing (凶星)” such as “fei lian (飛廉)” and “huang fan (黃幡)” that you always feel that people are not cooperative that makes you not able to concentrate on your

work. So, be patient and humble in working with your partners.

2. Affection and Love - 2013 is not a good year for you. Patient is undoubtedly the prime character you need to have to avoid conflict. Moreover, take care of the elderly.

3. Health - Ox is in general in good condition.

However, some OX will hardly stay calm.

TIGER

General Comment: Tiger has an above average year in 2013. Despite there are several “hung xing” staying aside you this year, there are also “ji xing” that offset the distructive force and bring you luck.

1. Wealth and Career - It is a good year for Tiger in making money and work. It is because of the blessing of “fu xing (福星)” and “tian de (天德)”.

One Must Be Grateful

Between Ignorance and Enlightenment

Some people in this world do not know how to be grateful. They will never remember or return a favor they have received. They simply do not understand that one should repay kindness with kindness. What we must do is be thankful to the hand that feeds us and repay all debts with gratitude.

When we rest under the shade of a tree, we should remember with gratitude those who have planted it for our benefit. When we enjoy the richness of our history and culture, we should be thankful for the labor and accomplishments of those before us.

Without the seeds of the past, we would not have the fruits of the present. If no one were willing to fix the road and fill the potholes, travel would be treacherous. If the farmers did not cultivate the field and harvest the crops, we would not have food to eat or clothes to wear. Our very own survival depends on the collective efforts of society. Therefore, we must be grateful and look for ways to repay our debts to society.

Why should we show filial piety towards our parents? Because they have toiled and suffered on our behalf. Why should we give to schools, hospitals, and fire departments? Because they have taught us, saved us, and protected us. Without them, we would not have knowledge, medical treatment, or a sense of security. Appreciation and charitable donations are indeed acts of gratitude.

A very wealthy man once gave a party to celebrate the completion of his new mansion. He asked the workers to sit at the head of the table and relegated his children to another area. No one could understand the seating arrangement, so the guests asked the wealthy man for an explanation. He explained, “The workers are the ones who built the house, so we should be thankful and not forget their hard work. However, my children are the future sellers of the estate, so they do not deserve a seat at the head table.”

We must always be grateful for favors received, and we must repay all acts of kindness. Only then, will we acquire more favorable conditions. Only then, will others be more willing to provide assistance. There are many stories in Chinese history of “repaying a drop of assistance with a flood of gratitude.” For example, Zhuge Liang repaid Liu Bei’s kindness even after his lord’s death by assisting Liu Bei’s son during his reign. Some have dedicated their lives to the one person who understood and treated them well. Some have been willing to die for their friends because of their friendship.

Some have been willing to forgive a major offense for a small favor received. Some have given a great deal of money to the person who loaned them a dollar when they weredown and out.

If a person does not know the meaning of gratitude, then he or she is deficient in his or her heart and not wealthy at all. If a person knows what it means to be grateful, he or she will find wealth everywhere. In order to live a life of abundance, we must treasure good connections and count our blessings. We must return every favor that has been bestowed upon us. We must find some way to express our gratitude to those who have helped us on one way or another. If we can be grateful at all times, we can transform the bad into the good; we can turn a bad situation into something better.

Therefore, gratitude is the best medicine for hatred and jealousy. It is the best way to eradicate defilement and discord. Not only will it improve personal character, it can also change one’s disposition and bring happiness and harmony to our everyday lives.

The Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida closed out 2012 with a special Business After Hours gathering sponsored by Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi, a favorite venue for the Chamber located in the Dellagio Plaza in South Orlando.

“We also like to support our members, so to be able to celebrate the season at Dragonfly Orlando with sales manager Allen Auyong joining in on the networking and making all feel welcome was a great way to cap off a successful year for the Chamber,” said Gail Rayos, AACC President.

I am still enthralled by Teri’s innovative and informative meetings about Japan and its people and culture. Some of our favorite meetings have been the cooking classes held at Teri’s or another member’s home. We love Japanese food and found its preparation to be some what of a challenge. With J.Club, not only did Teri share national dishes and their preparation and cooking techniques, we even went on a field trip to an Oriental market to learn about the special ingredients and how to find them.

As a result, Japanese dishes are part of our family cuisine!

Inspires invention and Encourages creativity The world’s first instant ramen, Chicken Ramen, debuted in 1958. In 1971 cup noodles went on sale for the first time anywhere and instant ramen became an international food. Today 95.4 billion serves of instant ramen are consumed every year.

The Cup Noodles Museum is located in Minato Mirai, Yokohama, celebration for the 40th birthday of Cup Noodles and opened on September 17, 2011. You can experience the kind of creative thinking displayed by Momofuku Ando, the inventor of instant ramen. Much thought has gone into devising original and ingenious displays that will keep even adults entertained.

It’s all About Teamwork!

Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association, founded in 1991, is responsible for organizing the dragon boat festivals in Hong Kong, promoting dragon boat sport to the world and training local athletes to represent Hong Kong in various world competitions. During these twenty one years, the association has trained 3,613 dragon boat athletes and 132 steerperson. In 2012, the number of paddlers in the club was largely increased from 202 to 861. The Association held six local dragon boat races and the International Dragon Boat Races last year. The training center is located at Shatin Shek Mun Rowing Centre by the beautiful Shing Mun River.

invited by Asia Trend Magazine to share his passion for dragon boating. Coach Chung recently awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons for his contribution to the dragon boat sport. He was responsible for organizing the last 5 years of International Dragon Boat Races, transporting the Summer Olympic torches by dragon boat in 2008 and winning the World Championship last year.

“A real team sport can teach you the importance of tolerance and the power of one team,” said Coach Chung. It is something we all need in order to have a cohesive society. Hong Kong Dragon Boat teammates practice five days a week including on water and dry run. Physical strength of course is important but not the most essential in dragon boating. Each paddler needs

to learn how to pace yourself to fit in a team.

Surprisingly, it is not the strongest team but the most synchronized wins. This is the reason why the dragon boat sport would raise the worldwide interest. Coach Chung told Asia Trend that he was glad to help transform this ancient Chinese folk ritual into a modern international sport. His ultimate goal is to have dragon boating qualified as one of the Summer Olympic Sports. Only by doing so, the dragon boating can be truly recognized.

A new Guinness World Record was created on 30th Dec 2011 for the Greatest Distance by Dragon Boat in 24 hours (relay) - 227 km. This record is currently held by the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association.  By Asia Trend

Orlando Table Tennis Club

WELCOMES New Players The Orlando oldest ping pong club, sponsored by the City of Orlando, was founded by Harry Blair in 1950’s. Mr. Blair’s greatest achievement was to organize the first table tennis club in Orlando. The club was originally called MartinMarietta Table Tennis and then became Orlando Table Tennis Club. The club has been supported by many players and has organized many tournaments. Since 2012, this club was led by the new President Hung Tran who has been a table tennis coach for more than 20 years.

Coach Tran initiated the newest tournament on Thanksgivingthis year. The goals of this tournament were to celebrate Thanksgiving holiday-
