Nina Yon

Caring and Sharing:

The Shepherd’s Hope mission brings patients  By Christi Ashby and volunteers together For some it’s the last resort. For others it’s the beginning of a journey. Those who have access to healthcare and insurance, and those who can least afford it meet at one of nine Shepherd’s Hope health centers across Central Florida where hope literally comes to life. A patient receives crucial medical attention and a volunteer has an opportunity to make a difference – one person at a time. As more and more working families are finding it harder to get or keep health insurance, the demand for services at Shepherd’s Hope clinics has been on the rise. People like Nina Yon are what make the clinics possible. Caring medical professionals – doctors and nurses – combined with compassionate volunteers enable the clinics to open for, in many cases, just a few short hours a week. Those hours give the sick and ill a place to go when no one else will see them. “Like most Asians immigrants, my parents came to America in pursuit of the American dream of making a better life for the next generation. Due to the language barrier, most Asians work in minimum wage jobs with no medical benefits offered to them. After learning about Shepherd’s Hope, I truly feel it’s the best kept secret in Orlando,” says Yon. Yon, who is also vice president of internal affairs for the Asian American Chamber of Commerce, has volunteered for the last year in the Shepherd’s Hope Westside Center in Winter Garden and has a passion for helping patients who walk through the doors. Having grown up in Taiwan and Florida she is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese

and can serve as a patient translator as needed. “In 2008 I decided to live a different lifestyle, a life of giving back and making a difference. After working for the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau for 8 years as a meeting planner where I was promoting Orlando as the best destination for leisure and business travel, and the Orange County Convention Center as the best convention center in the nation, I wanted to re-prioritize my life,” says Yon. Just seeing a smiling face greet them puts many patients at ease. And on a recent evening Yon was able to assist one gentleman through the paperwork process and medical evaluation by gently probing him for health answers and translating those back to the attending nurse. “I’ve been able to utilize my language skills to translate for Chinese patients when they come in to see our doctors at the Westside Clinic. In addition, we are seeing many Vietnamese patients at our Goldenrod -Dr. Diebel’s clinic,” says Yon. No one knows this better than Dr. V. Nguyen who was born in Vietnam and has lived in the U.S. for 35 years. She has volunteered at the health center for more than a year because she believes giving back to the community is important. “I work for the Orange County Health Department [she is director of the tuberculosis control center] and a lot of the population we see is in the same situation – no insurance. These people just fall through the cracks so I thought this

Dr. V. Nguyen

was a way I could help,” she says. She worries too that a lot of Asians do not speak English making their quest for health care even more difficult. “It’s hard when you go to a doctor and you can’t tell them what’s wrong. We have certain days where other Vietnamese doctors come in. That’s when we will see larger numbers of Asian patients come in,” she says. Dr. Nguyen is very proud of the Dr. Diebel, Jr. Memorial Shepherd’s Hope Health Center in east Orlando. “I think this is a great opportunity to help others and our patients receive top quality care. This service also keeps many people out of the ER,” she continues. Both women want to get the word out about opportunities for patients and volunteers with Shepherd’s Hope. Dr. Nguyen hopes more doctors, particularly specialists, will consider volunteering. Nina Yon goes beyond her health center duties by also serving on the Famous Faces Masquerade Ball committee, the largest fundraising event for Shepherd’s Hope, which will be held October 30 at Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando. The non-profit organization is funded 100 percent by direct donations, grants and event proceeds. “I’m proud to say we meet our budget solely through compassionate and conscientious philanthropy, through donations of time, talents and resources,” says Shepherd’s Hope President Cindi Kopelman.

insured, was founded by Dr. William S. Barnes, pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, after he was inspired while walking on the beach. Within six months, with the help of his congregation and other volunteers the first health care center opened. The program has thrived by building relationships within the community. Most centers are housed in a donated space -- school, church, synagogue, mosque or community facility – and each has a medical facility partner for diagnostic referrals. By following this model Shepherd’s Hope recently passed the 100,000 patient-visit milestone. “There have been many nights that I walk away from the clinic with tears in my eyes because I was so touched by their gratitude. There’s nothing in the world that beats the feeling that you’ve just helped someone,” adds Yon. Nina Yon and Dr. V. Nguyen are just two of 2,000 volunteers who share their time, energy, warmth and spirit with those of all ages who are in need of healing. If you would like more information about Shepherd’s Hope services, volunteer opportunities or event tickets and sponsorships, please visit www.shepherdshope.org or call 407-876-6699. Acoustic journey brings Thai musicians together  By Gail Rayos C.K. Lau

on The Avenue

Asawin Jockkeaw, Win Inthara and Thitipong Cholvanich – known to their fans as AJ, Win, and Guide – are making a name for themselves as The Avenue, a band that brings their Thai backgrounds to the stage when they perform their unique style of acoustic pop and R&B. By day they are a chef, an engineer and a student. One’s even found time to become a champion Scrabble player. But at night, you’ll find them rehearsing and performing, with Win on lead vocals and guitar, Guide at bass, drums and percussion and AJ mixing it up between flute, sax, keyboard, drums and a little guitar.

How have your cultural backgrounds shaped you today? We were all born and raised in Thailand, speaking Thai as our first language. AJ grew up in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and came here to live with his mother about 12 years ago. Win and Guide have been in this country for about 8 years, coming here to go to school. Mostly, we maintain Thai and Oriental cultural ways, but we have adapted to American culture and lifestyle, When did The Avenue start performing? Two years ago, for the Thai Food Festival at Florida Dhammaram, in Kissimmee. We contributed to stage performances in the festival. What musical artists have inspired you all? Michael Jackson, Dream Theater and Earth Wind & Fire. How would you describe the music you perform? Acoustic cover music of Billboard charts from the 80’s to the present. We also arranged some of the famous songs into our own versions. How did the band get together? We’ve known each other for about 8 years and decided to form a band after AJ bought a house - with a music room for all kinds of instruments. AJ used to be a professional musician in Thailand. He performed every night at clubs and restaurants. Win has a passion for singing. He tried out for American Idol and Thai Idol (called Academy Fantasia) and made it to the top 50 for Thai Idol. Guide used to play drums as a hobby but wanted to start playing bass. So, we jammed out at AJ’s house and ended up starting a band. After two years of performing at events, we were discovered by Sue Manatad (the owner of Thai Orchid) who wanted to have an acoustic Thai band for her restaurant on Park Avenue. The band has also been kindly supported by some other Thai restaurants in town and our good friends. What are your ambitions for the band? Our hope is to be an entertainment group that brings joy to audiences through music in any occasion or event that we are invited to play and to make their day or night with us more precious. Win has a personal dream to take his singing and performing skills to the next level and be a famous singer.

8 Jul 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

They appear weekly at Orchid Thai Cuisine in Winter Park – and are in demand more and more to take the stage at events across Central Florida. Asia Trend spent a few moments recently getting to know The Avenue. As entertainers, how do you measure success? Unlike professional musicians, we only want to make enough from performing to compensate for our time. We keep expanding our song list, hoping that one day we will be able to play every song that our audiences and fans have requested. Success, in our term, is to see audiences sing along and get up and dance with the songs we play. Where do you play? We currently play at Orchid Thai Cuisine restaurant on Park Ave. We, as a full band “Royal Sea Villa” also play at Thai temple Wat Florida Dhammaram, in Kissimmee in some important events, such as Thai New Year Festival (April) and Thai Food Festival (October). Most unusual command performance? Singing in the rain. One of our lovely customers at Orchid Thai Cuisine requested a song, and we promised her to play it the following week. Next week came, along with the rain. The customer knew that we had practiced the song, so with the rain showering down, she sat in the outdoor section of the restaurant just to hear what we prepared for her. Playing in the rain for the first time with the audience cheering us on was such a memorable time. What about hobbies? And hidden talents? Guide is a car enthusiast and loves to work on cars. Win plays Scrabble competitively and is ranked in the top 10 in Florida. AJ enjoys cooking for friends and playing guitar at home. What would you say to a young person who wants to sing, dance, be an artist? Don’t Stop Believing … How do fans keep up with The Avenue? You can find us at Facebook : The Avenue The Avenue can be reached at mnkwin@hotmail.com or 407-7313016 for private party, wedding and event.

My Journey Back Home

Reconnecting with my culture, my heritage How many of us have left our country and one of the things high up on our list that we miss is the food? I raise my hand to that! I moved with my family to the US over 20 years ago. I was a teenager then, lived at home until after college graduation before venturing on my own. Living at home had its perks especially when your mom is a great cook. I didn’t miss the Philippines too much because I basically ate Filipino food every day. And that was all I needed. Life and growing up is part of being human no matter what culture you come from. People eventually leave home to venture life as an adult. And I did this at 23. But, I lived about 20 minutes from my parents and I raided their kitchen almost every day. If I didn’t, all I had at home was ramen. And trust me; I became a connoisseur of ramen – with chicken? With broccoli? Oh, how about cabbage? I made so many meals using this wonderful product. But I got tired of ramen and not eating at home. I felt like, what’s the point of paying rent when I’m never there? Because I did not like eating alone, I started inviting my American friends over and cooking for them. I made American food – pot roast, beef stew, baked chicken, etc but always served it with steamed rice. It was great but I missed home. So I started cooking Filipino food for them. I wanted to use my country’s dishes as a way of assimilating to what I now call home – USA. I found myself talking proudly

10 Jul 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

about the food, the ingredients I used, and how they were prepared. I also found myself changing some of the ingredients to something more familiar to my friends. They had no clue what bitter gourd is but they sure know zucchini. I knew they would turn their noses on fish sauce but I sure can use salt as a substitute. Nobody really knew what Filipino food was like until I introduced them to Pancit (stir-fried rice noodles) and Lumpia (our version of the egg roll). I enjoyed the introduction tremendously because I felt accepted and my food (culture) appreciated. It was like I introduced a whole new cultural experience to them. I met my future husband while I was still living in CA and he was stationed in HI. He was a single dad to two kids. He is from Connecticut and even though he has lived all over the country, his knowledge of Asian cuisine was limited to Chinese and Japanese. My step kids are very picky eaters and eating out got very expensive. I took a hiatus from cooking to get acclimated to living far away from CA, but with my new family, I would take up cooking again. In reality, it was more than about feeding my new American family; I was missing home. I was beginning to lose my heritage. Fortunately HI has a huge Filipino population and Asian fruits and vegetables were abundant in local markets. I started experimenting with dishes I was familiar with, a little bit of this…a dash of that… oh and maybe a scoop of

 By Rowena Mateo-Sjovall

that smelly thing. As with anything else in my adult life, I wanted my cooking to make it on its own. It was my way of reconnecting with my culture, my heritage. It was my journey back home. This column is about reconnecting with our heritage through our culinary experience. Whether you are a first generation or third generation immigrant, we all have something that ties us to our ethnic culture. Food almost always binds us to our culture. Future topics for this column will include cooking and kitchen tips, recipes from different regions of Asia, and musings on how our different country’s delicacies connect us to our culture and heritage no matter what distance we travel or reminisce from. If you have any feature ideas, recipes or comments for future articles, please feel free to send an email at saraplicious@yahoo.com. Due to limited space, recipes, in its entirety will be featured on www. saraplicious.com. See you next month! Cornerstone Productions®

Makes Magic in Asia

Paul Belanger

 By Asia Trend

Paul Belanger of Cornerstone Productions® has had many firsts in entertainment throughout the world, but Asia has always been special to him. Paul taught in Japan his original Body Costumes with balloons and his original Interactive Balloon Games as stage routines and accessory routines, to many professionals in Japan to use in their own shows. Paul is also well known for China’s first balloon performances, which has taken the country by storm to open up balloon performances by many other entertainers afterwards.

Paul in Hangzhou, China

Paul was the producer of the first truly internationally acclaimed Balloon Fashion Show in the world, which took place in Shanghai, China. This was produced in China, to be aired all throughout Asia on CCTV. The result was a media blitz on the internet for over 9 months which rocked the balloon world with numerous photos and video clips. This event caused future balloon fashion shows (within less than a year afterwards) to take place in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and afterward Las Vegas in the USA. One or more of the balloon cast members from the original Balloon Fashion Show in Shanghai, produced by Paul Belanger, were featured in these other programs. Educating a World of Entertainers

Paul performing at the China Wuqiao International Circus Festival (largest in all of Asia)

Paul Belanger taught balloons in 10 universities in China and numerous community events all throughout China to help spread the art form to be used in festivals and many other events in the future. Some of the many students still continue to create balloons in China. November of 2009, Paul Belanger of Cornerstone Productions® International, produced a balloon project for the China Wuqiao International Circus Festival. The entertainment included a large festival mascot, opening ceremonies, performances throughout the city and warm up performances before every circus competition and show. The people saw traditional balloons, balloon fashion, unusual balloon toys and giant interactive balloon puppetry besides the balloon performances.

Beijing Olympic 2008

Some of the fun and excitement is to perform in front of a new audience while combining the culture of the city or special event into the balloon creations, to help give it a huge emotional impact! Paul Belanger hopes to travel to other countries throughout Asia, to spread his form of performance, while also basking in the rich culture which surrounds him.

Summer Camp 2010: Another Great Success! Guang Ming Temple had another successful Children’s Summer Camp this year! Over 40 children attended the camp which was our biggest turnout thus far! This year’s theme was on the three acts of goodness: Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words, and Think Good Thoughts. Over the course of three days, campers learned the importance of the three acts of goodness. The activities included classes and a volunteer project where campers decorated cards and bags stuffed with essential items for the homeless, arts and craft activities, water games, meditation, and the Festival of Fun, which was a night of outdoor games and included a bounce house! In addition, Orange County Fire Department gave a fire safety demonstration. Overall, the campers enjoyed themselves and the counselors loved every moment of it.

Between Ignorance And Enlightenment

When People Slander Me When people slander me, what should I do? Forbearance is the path of least harm. Set a good example for my children and grandchildren;

Follow the gentle, not the violent. We should not get too upset when slandered by others. It does not hurt us too much to get the short end-of the stick once in a while - for when the clouds clear, the sun will shine through. We need to treat others with sincerity and honesty, thereby setting a good example for the younger generations. Even further, we need to “Follow the gentle, not the violent.”

A quick learner is not necessarily smart. A slow learner is not necessarily stupid. Guang Ming Temple July 2010 Calendar

Sutra Transcribing

We should be reasonable when someone slanders us. Once slandered it appears we are getting the short end of the stick. This is not true. In reality, if we can be patient and uncalculating, if we refrain from seeking revenge, in time people will know the truth. Then the slander not only will not harm us but will become an opportunity to gain merit. Just as the Sutra of Forty-two Sections says, “To slander others is like blowing dust into the wind; not only will it not harm others, the dust will ultimately fall back on ourselves. To slander others is also like spitting up into the sky, when it falls, it will fall flat in our face.” Thus, we should not be bothered by others’ idle talk and slander. Instead, we should be tolerant, patient, and forgiving. The greatest strength in this world comes not from fists nor guns but from tolerance under insult. According to Buddhist teachings, the merit gained from practicing the precepts is not as great as the merit gained from practicing tolerance. So you can see here the strength of tolerance. In our practice the first thing we need to learn is tolerance. We have to be tolerant in our speech and should not yell at others for no apparent reason. We have to be tolerant in our bodies and should not show anger on our face. We have to be tolerant in our minds and be truly forgiving of the bad deeds that others have done to-us. If we can do this, we set a good and invaluable example to the younger generations. There is a story in the Sutra of the One Hundred Parables. One day, a father sent his son to the market to buy some food and drinks to serve his guests. When his son did not return for a long time, the father was getting worried and went out to look for him. He found his son standing on the street staring at a stranger. The father was puzzled and asked him why he stared so. The son told his father that since the stranger would not step aside to let him pass, both of them decided to stare at each other to see who would give up first. The father was very mad and told his son to run home with the groceries and he would take his place and see who would win. Does not giving a single step mean victory? Does this make us truly happy? If we want to set a good example to the younger generations, we should be tolerant, patient, and forgiving. Our children will benefit from it tremendously.

The end of world, 2012?

Source: The Standard - www.thestandard.com.hk

 By Master Kerby Kuek

The 4 billion years old planet would come to an end! The end of world is near and it is in 2012? Movies and the books all talked about the end of the world by 2012. The following books in particular: The Mayan Factor--Path Beyond Technology. Jose Arguelles Bear & Company, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1996. Maya Cosmo genesis 2012. John Major Jenkins Bear & Company, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1998. King of Terror 1999: Century 10 Quatrain 72. Nostradamus. How true is it? Or it is the repeat of Y2K scare? Or is this merely a self-fulfilling prophecy!! Asked all scientist and they will tell you nothing would happen in 2012. Neverthelss, the giant solar storms that predicted in 2012 would cause some interference of satellite communications and such cycle is normal for every 11 years. Again, no big deal. But hang on….read this one. In Chinese metaphysical analysis, the year of 2012 would signal and ‘unusual’ event on the earth. The heavy water element would cause 3 main events one is the heavy flood that is unprecedented would cause unimaginable consequences such as outbreak in diseases, the second event would be the earth structure being eroded badly and finally the political arena especially Hong Kong and PRC would see some dramatic and unprecedented events, I do not dare to predict further here. In

another translation the real impact would be on the properties, for those who are thinking about buying this is the time to own your own property. But analyse your own luck or financial ability before making any decision I am not here to read your future! The unusual weather is an extreme threat to the earth as the environment or Mother Nature is being exploited or damaged that causes the event. Such rational is not hard to understand as human being live in accordance to four seasons that within certain parameters of comfort zones. The comfort zone would change in 2012 and beyond due to such changes in weather. The degree of tolerance level is pretty much depending upon individual comfort zones. We are human being that would adapt easily and that should not be a big of a problem but beyond we should start thinking about loving the environment more and care about our community as a whole. Our passion and love of living beings should not be eroded by the expense of economic development and certain vested interest. Relax the world will not end in 2012 but prepare to brace of a roller coaster year of diseases and political upheaval!

Deep breathing secrets A baby’s first breath is through the nose and right down to the abdomen. Many doctors agree that this is the correct way of breathing to ensure a healthy body. This is the way of Tan Tao breathing. Tan Tao, which dates back more than 2,000 years, is an ancient practice of breathing technique, or meditation, to ensure a long life.

We often neglect the simple, yet essential, practice of relaxing our muscles to help the circulation of blood and air in our bodies. The difference will become obvious after one does it for only seven days. Remember the simple rule: breathe deep, down to your abdomen. There are basically two breathing techniques.

The Daoism sage Lao Tzu said that when you feel you’re breathing through your lung, that means your lungs are not functioning well. Ironically, when you breathe normally without feeling your lungs, then they are working fine.

Natural breathing. A relaxing technique that utilizes and maximizes the oxygen that we take in. The important thing to look for is a bulging of the belly when you breathe in, especially about six centimeters below the belly button.

Today, people think that consuming the right food, vitamins, medicines and supplements help them live longer.

Unnatural breathing. Here, you use your lungs to take deep, powerful breaths. In line with the yin-yang balance, this hard type of breathing balances out the soft natural breathing. It is used to detoxify the body. This cleansing technique can be used only during daylight.

But one Indian yogi has claimed that he has survived for seventy years without food and water, just yoga and meditation. This shows the importance of breathing - especially the correct way of breathing.

Quote of the week: Filial piety ensures harmony.

The beauty of it all is that air is, of course, free. An ancient text, Chan Tong Qi (Three in One) by Han scholar Wei Boyang, talks about methods of prolonging one’s lifespan such as Swapping the Ham and Lei Guas, Exchanging the Dragon and Tiger Energy. But in my opinion, these are all simply breathing techniques. Thirty minutes to an hour of deep breathing a day, using the Tan Tao Small Cycle techniques as laid out below, would ensure one stays healthy. Support Asia Trend Magazine, Support our Advertisers

The Karate Kid Delivers Decent Blows

 By Linda Lim

The remake of the 1984 classic of the same name opened in theatres on June 11th and brought in a respectable $56 million in its first weekend. The plot follows the same storyline as the original with a young boy trying to fit into new surroundings, overcoming odds, and proving that good can triumph evil. The movie is set in Beijing, and offers viewers a glimpse into modern day China. Location shots included the Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square, but the highlight was the picturesque scenes of the Wu Dang Mountains located in Central China’s Hubei Province. The Wu Dang Mountains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the Holy Place of Taoism. The cast is truly what makes this movie a success. Jaden Smith (Dre) and Jackie Chan (Mr. Han) deliver stunning performances and notable mention must also go to the young Chinese actors, Wen Wen Han (Mei Ying) and Zhen Wei Wang (Cheng). While there was some reference to the various martial art forms, it would have been a nice touch from a cultural perspective to educate the viewers about the differences between the Japanese martial art of Karate which was invented as a method of self-defense involving strong, linear movements and Chinese Gong Fu which is much more fluid and circular. (Incidentally, the movie is being released in Asia as “The Kung Fu Kid”.) If you can overlook some of the cheesiness that is expected of a Hollywood, good-overcoming-evil -no matter-how- little- training- time storyline as well as the obligatory young love kiss and tales of past tragedies, then this is a movie that is worth watching.

~Teri’s trip to

Japan 2010 ~

 By Teri Mitchell

Series: Gourmet in Japan: 3 Another FUN food in Japan is Obento お弁当 (Bento 弁当), which is also getting popular here in the U.S.

Yokohama Kiyoken’s Obento “Spring” 横浜崎陽軒お弁当「春」 ¥650 Seasoned rice, “Shumai” dumplings, grilled fish, Tempura, bamboo shoot, shrimp ball, flowershaped carrot. http://www.kiyoken.com

I had Obento several times during my last stay in Japan. Each time, it took me a while to choose from the huge selection of Obento. Obento is a single-portion takeout or homepacked meal, common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional Obento consists of rice, fish and/or meat, and pickled and/or cooked vegetables. Its served usually in a box-shaped container. Obento is readily available in many places throughout Japan, including convenience stores, Bento shops, train stations, supermarkets and department stores. The origin of Obento can be traced back to late Kamakura Era (1185-1333).

► Sweet rice with red beans, bamboo shoots and carrots, spinach filled omlet, “Shumai” dumpling, fish balls, Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), bamboo shoot, carrot, “Konbu” kelp, fried bean curd cake.

In Meiji Era (1868-1912), the first Eki Ben

駅弁 (Eki Bento 駅弁当: train station Bento) was

sold. There are several records that claim where Eki Ben was first sold, but it is believed that July 16th, 1885 at Utsunomiya Station was the first on record. The first one was a very simple form, containing two Onigiri おにぎり (rice balls) and a serving of Takuan (yellow pickled Japanese radish) wrapped in bamboo leaves.

► “Chicken Nanban Don” Japanese fried chicken with Chinese flavored sauce, porched egg, “Kinpira” burdock and carrot, sautéed Chinese spinach, green leaf lettuce over white rice.

▼ “Hiyashi Chuka” is a very popular summer food. Ramen noodles topped with ham, eggs, cucumber, seaweed, bean sprouts and red ginger, with sweet and tangy soy-sesame sauce. Eaten chilled. ¥450

Obento is very convenient, reasonable, nutritional and even entertaining since it’s an assortment of different kinds of foods. These days, moms and wives in Japan are passionate about making appealingly arranged Obento “Kyara Ben” キャラ弁 (Character Bento キャラクター弁当) and even hold contests to choose the best one. Kyara Ben is a style of elaborately arranged Obento which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals, and plants. Originally, a decorated bento was intended to interest children in their food and to encourage a wider range of eating habits.

▼This looks very tasty, but is not edible. These are plastic, not real food. Food replicas appear prevalently in the windows and display cases of food-serving establishments throughout Japan. The plastic models are mostly handmade and carefully sculpted to look like the actual dishes. Amazingly real-looking, unbelievably delicious looking. ¥1400 Lunch Set I will talk more about this another time…..

Cosplay becomes a trend What is Cosplay?

Cosplay, refers to Costume Play, a culture where avid fans create authentic costumes and props so as to role play as their favourite fantasy characters. Originally Cosplay was an Asian culture, predominantly in Japan, where fans would recreate their favourite characters from Japanese culture, including: anime, video games, manga, graphic novels, comic books and characters from J-Rock and J-Pop music culture. In the past decade, the popularity of Cosplay has expanded to the western world and now includes fans of non Asian cultures, popular western Cosplay includes: Star Wars and Disney characters. When Cosplay takes place, fans spend time to create the most authentic costumes, making close attention to every little detail. When in costume the Cosplayers take on the characteristics and mannerisms of the character they are portraying. Cosplay most commonly takes place at conventions, such as Anime Festival Orlando in Orlando and Comiket in Japan. Due to the great visual appeal of Cosplay, it has now become a trend to photograph these costumes to a high standard, often recreating scenes or poses from the original source. Cosplay can be seen as just a hobby for fans of comic books and video games, but in many parts of the world it has produced its own subculture.

Important Steps to Investing in Commercial Property

 By Tae Shin Attorney at Law

If you are in a position to take advantage of the investment opportunities currently available in the commercial real estate market, there are a few issues to keep in mind when negotiating with lenders and sellers. In addition to the interest rate of the loan, the potential investor will need to negotiate with the lender other important terms of the loan such as personal guarantees, cross collateralization and loan covenants. The potential investor will also have to negotiate with the seller and verify all of seller’s representations with respect to the property. Successful negotiations with the lender and seller prior to the closing will allow you to focus your time on managing your new property and generating income.

Loan Documents First, lending guidelines and policies are being more rigorously enforced in the aftermath of the recent collapse of the real estate market. As a potential borrower, you need to carefully read all of the loan documents and the densely packed legal language contained in them. Some of the language that you will want to pay close attention to deals with personal guarantees, cross collateralization and covenants. Today, it is difficult to obtain a commercial (or any other) loan without a personal guarantee of the loan. Before personally guaranteeing a

commercial loan, you need to be aware of how a lender can enforce a personal guarantee and how it will affect your other assets. Some loan documents, especially those for commercial property, will contain covenants. A violation of one or more of these covenants will be deemed to constitute a default of the loan, likely triggering acceleration of the loan and default interest rates, which can easily exceed 15%. For example, a loan document may have a covenant that requires the property to generate rental income in an amount that is equal to a percentage of the loan. If the property does not generate enough income, the lender can call the loan in default, accelerate the loan and foreclose on the property if the loan is not immediately repaid in full. You should review the covenants in the loan documents and make sure that they are reasonable.

Due Diligence Before purchasing commercial property, you will want to conduct due diligence with respect to title, environmental issues and issues related to tenants. You will also want to conduct a thorough title search not only to ensure that the seller has clear title to the property, but also to look for easements and other encumbrances associated with the property. For example, the commercial

property in question may have an easement with an adjacent property for use of a retention pond that requires contribution for maintenance of the drain system or retention pond. You should also closely examine all current leases to ensure that the lease terms are in accordance with the seller’s representations and ordinary course of business. Since you will assume the landlord’s position with respect to these leases, it is important to review the leases. While some investors have experience with commercial property acquisition, a new investor should take the time to consult with his or her attorney in order to successfully negotiate with the lender and seller. Tae Shin is a corporate, tax, estate planning and business attorney at the law firm of Shuffield, Lowman and Wilson. P.A., a full service commercial law firm.

Optical Fiber Pioneer being knighted by Queen Elizabeth transformed the way we live, work and amuse ourselves. Here’s one measure of the impact of Kao’s work: The academy said that if all the glass fiber that now carries phone calls and data were wrapped around the world, it would span the globe more than 25,000 times. Nobel prize winner and father of fiber optics Charles Kao Kuen on July 1st responded with his trademark broad smile when learning from his wife that he has been awarded a Grand Bauhinia Medal. Many of his friends used the occasion to congratulate him on being knighted by Queen Elizabeth on June 1st.

The next time you type a message and post it to Facebook, or upload a video to Youtube, you can probably thank the man who won the Nobel Prize in physics on Oct 2009. He helped develop fiber-optic cable and high-speed Internet service, revolutionized communications and science, and utterly

Nobel laureate Charles Kao and his family immigrated to Hong Kong in 1949, and was then admitted to St. Joseph’s College where he received four years of secondary education. Kao was awarded half of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for “ groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication.”

 Compiled by Asia Trend

Kao helped fuel the development of optical fibers, the thin waveguides that route light over thousands of kilometers to deliver telephone, TV, and Internet services. Because optical fibers transmit light, which speeds through wires faster than electricity, they enable highspeed communication and large bandwidth data transfer literally at the speed of light. Work on optical fibers using long, thin glass wires took shape in the 1950s, as it became apparent that shuttling electrons back and forth wouldn’t support the growing telephone and television industry for long. But because early fibers lost a huge amount of information even over distances as short as a meter, they were useful mostly for endoscopy and other medical applications, not for transmitting information across oceans. But Kao saw the potential of glass fibers. ”The material is very cheap, as I went to the most abundant material on Earth,” Kao said in a 2004 IEEE oral history. ”And it is also that the fiber itself has very, very good durability. So really it is an ideal thing. It is really the cheapest and strongest material that you can use.”

Lenovo’s Lephone is targetting 1 million user in Chinese market

 Compiled by Asia Trend

Lenovo, the world’s No 4 PC brand, said in April mobile Internet products would account for 10-20 percent of revenue in five years. Apple is missing out on an opportunity to further expand in China, citing Lenovo’s Chairman Liu Chuanzhi. “We are lucky Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn’t care about China,” Liu was quoted by the Financial Times as saying. “I am convinced that Lenovo’s latest smartphone, LePhone, will be a success in the Chinese market,” said Liu Chuanzhi, chairman of Lenovo Group. The new LePhone is ready for a fight with Apple’s iPhone in the Chinese market and is bound to succeed since LePhone is customized for Chinese users and has received strong support from top domestic service and content suppliers, including Baidu Inc, Alibaba Group and Tencent Inc.

28 Jul 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

Based on Google Inc’s Android operating system, the first version of LePhone, running on the 3G standard WCDMA, which is used by China Unicom, already launched on May 17. Lenovo is also working on several versions of LePhone for China’s other two 3G standards - CDMA2000 by China Telecom and homegrown TD-SCDMA by China Mobile, which will enter the market gradually, Liu, also founder of Lenovo, said. Lenovo will also launch other models of the phone with modified functions, designs and business models after conducting large-scale surveys of market response and consumer acceptance, he added. Spurred by a boom in 3G mobile services, China’s mobile Internet users increased 120 million to 233 million at the end of 2009 year-on-year, accounting for 60.8 percent of the total Internet users around the nation, ac-

cording to the latest report released by China Internet Network Information Center. The mobile Internet device market will overtake traditional PCs in the next five years, said Yang Yuanqing, chief executive of Lenovo Group.

Then There’s the One About the Herd of Meatballs  By Wayne Chan

So you can understand how an errant e-mail might distort my dad’s “reality field”. Let me just say, before I begin, that I did not make the following up. Not so long ago, a friend of the family forwarded an e-mail to my dad with a disturbing report. The e-mail, written entirely in Chinese, claimed that Kentucky Fried Chicken (now known as KFC), in an effort to cut costs and boost profit margins, had managed to genetically alter the DNA of a chicken so that these new chickens no longer had feathers, bones, a beak, wings, legs, or heads. Essentially, KFC had created a living, breathing, full-sized chicken nugget. Upon further investigation, I was astonished to learn that when these boneless blobs of chicken roll around vigorously in their chicken coops, they sweat honey mustard sauce. OK, OK, I just made up that last part. But, it’s not like after reading about this robo-chicken that someone’s going to read my little fib and say, “OK Wayne, now you’re just being silly!” Seeing as how my father has always loved eating at Kentucky Fried Chicken (as does all of the Chan family, which probably has something to do with his DNA being passed along to all of us), he was immediately taken aback and aghast. In fact, he was so repulsed by what he had read that it prompted him to write a letter to the president of KFC to seek out the truth. In his letter to the president of KFC, my Dad wrote: Dear Sir,

Don’t believe everything you read. If there’s anything you might take away after reading this column, I hope you believe that simple fact.

I have enjoyed eating KFC products for many years. However, I am writing to you today because of an e-mail I recently received that deeply troubles me. The claim I’ve read is that the reason Kentucky Fried Chicken has changed it’s name to KFC is because KFC no longer serves real chickens.

Hmm…I think there’s something wrong with my point, but I just can’t put my finger on it.

I would appreciate it if you would respond to these allegations so that I might be able to continue enjoying your products.

Anyways, the point I was trying to make is about how in this day and age, the internet allows anyone who has a keyboard to write just about anything they’d like for public consumption, which makes it tougher for everyone to discern fact from fiction.

Thank you.

Case in point: The mystery of the genetic robo super-chicken. My father is a very educated and wise man. He came to this country from China nearly penniless, and yet he’s gone on to become a respected university professor, written a text book, and owned several businesses. He and my mother managed to raise my brother and I, support us through college and send us on our way to make our own lives. Yet for most of his life, as with most people of his generation, when they read something in a newspaper, book, or magazine, they could usually trust that the information they were reading had been thoroughly vetted by an editor or publisher.

30 Jul 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

Surprisingly enough, KFC did manage to reply to my dad’s thoughtful letter. In it, they assert that this rumor was an urban legend and that KFC serves the same type of chickens that we all might buy at our local markets. Fair enough. The only problem I have with their explanation is that it doesn’t exactly give me a vote of confidence when the last time I visited the supermarket I bought a big tube of boneless ground chicken. His most fervent wish is to see the San Diego Chargers win the Super Bowl and to be the best dad and husband he can be to his triplet kids and wife Maya. Of course, if he could be a great parent while watching the Chargers win the Superbowl - even better.

Community 社區 Hundreds attendees including past principals, teachers, Chinese Community leaders, parents, students and volunteers came together to celebrate the school’s 30th birthday on May 15, 2010 at the Winter Park High School Ninth Grade Center. They were excited to witness the growth of the school which has promoted the Chinese language, culture, and ethnicity in Central Florida for three decades. The Chinese School of CAACF, based in Orlando, is one of the most established and premiere Chinese schools in Florida. Offering a variety of language and cultural courses, the school offers classes to all age levels in a fun and friendly environment. The school is currently serving grade-school kids, high-school and college students, and many adults too on every Saturday. The school would not sustain without the teachers’ tireless hours, seventeen principals’ dedications together with the parents’ supports. To know more about the school, please visit www.orlandochineseschool.org. Registration for the Fall semester starts on August 28.

Filipino Independence Day festival  By Alexander Alzona in Central Florida

The Wonderment in a child’s eyes; seeing the mysteries that captivate the imagination, new sensations charm the mind of the beauty and mystery that defines the people and culture of the Philippines. I will never forget my first visit to the Philippines: the new faces, the new food, their fashion, their cuisine and the way they celebrated themselves. I was five at the time when my grandparents had brought me to see this strange new land. Everything we did in the Philippines was a new awakening to a culture that I had taken for

granted. I had not known the origins to the acts of respect to elders such as “Mano” an act of a blessing given from an elder to a younger relative or friend or that no matter who is at your house around a meal time it is respectful to welcome the guest to a meal. After my visit I began to delve deeper into the meaning behind the traditional dances such as Tinkling (a dance mimicking the movements of a bird passing through bamboo) and the very exotic and tasteful food that my grandmother has served over the years. My family of course has

taught me that when you travel there are some things that you take with you that don’t need a suitcase. You take the spirit of your ancestors and the traditions that help create your cultural identity. Going for the sixth time to the C.F.A.O. sponsored Filipino Independence Day festival is a great reminder of the embodiment that I had seen 15 years ago in the Philippines. Eating the cooking, watching the performances and listening to the musical performances is only half of the experience. Interacting and talking to fellow patrons

and those directly involved within the event will give you the true durability of the Filipino spirit. The festival is a chance to meet others with the same intensity of interest in the Pinoy culture. One of the many great people I happened to talk to was James Enriquez a young family man. He was born in Chicago and carries on the work of his mother Thelma Enrique; a catering business which her mother started in 1982. Since the move things have started well for James’ Catering. This was their first event and they plan to continue selling at future events.

Another similar and no less miraculous story was that of the humble beginnings of SiegeInk® founded by Michael Siege a young entrepreneur. He started his print design in High School starting with only himself; now he has a business partner and numerous clients and employees. He continues to sketch his designs sometimes drawing them into the computer but always handles each stitch with care. of the prayer, the energetic dancing of the Bayanihan of Wedgefield, and the wonderful a capella of Peter, Paul and Patrick Simondac. Together at the festival we all shared a piece of what makes the Philippines unique and marvelous. Alexander Alzona, is currently a Valencia student transferring over to UCF, with Computer Programming as his major. He has traveled to the Red Square, Warsaw, Paris, and London among other various European locations. He is a French speaker and is a classically trained ballroom dancer. He loves to go ballroom dancing and competing in sports and computing activities. asiatrendmagazine.com Jul 2010
