Asian Americans Celebrate Heritage Month at the Governor’s Mansion Tallahassee--Hundreds of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the State of Florida flocked to Tallahassee May 26 to join Governor Scott’s special reception at the Mansion to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month., a traditional congressional proclamation in the month of May. The reception, held at the mansion’s lawn, welcomed busloads of community leaders representing hundreds of Asian American organizations from all parts of the State where they enjoyed wine, sushi, and array of ethnic food. There were cultural presentations at the lawn ranging from native dances to martial arts to ethnic music. Dr. Clyde Diao, a Filipino American, Chair of the Asian Coalition of Tallahassee (ACT), and a member of the governor’s cabinet, introduced the governor. He enumerated the various state government’s economic plans, especially the 777 project of the governor, which is geared to help create jobs for Floridians. He said that the Heritage Month reception was begun three years ago under then Governor Crist, He then thanked Governor Scott, on behalf of Asian Americans, for continuing the tradition. He specifically thanked the Governor for appointing Ananth Prasad, an Indian American to head the Florida Department

of Transportation, a state agency. “This Heritage Month is a special opportunity,” the governor said in his speech,” to acknowledge and honor the achievements of Asian Americans, and communicate to the community the diverse contributions of Asian Americans to the overall vigor and vitality of the economy in the State. He also introduced his wife Anne (they were married since they were 19 years old) stating that they also nurtured the American dream and began from simple beginnings to the Governor’s Mansion. He said he and his wife have begun studying the Mandarin dialect.

Ms. Chao, an American of Chinese ancestry, spoke of her early years in the country, speaking no English at age 8, but nurturing a dream to one day achieve the American dream. She did, from a one bedroom apartment in New York City to becoming Labor Secretary, the only Asian so honored.
The governor then introduced special guest Elaine Chao, Department of Labor Secretary.
Elaine Chao 趙小蘭, the first Asian Pacific American woman and first Chinese American appointed to a President’s cabinet in American history. She served as the United States Secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009.

Dr. Joy Bruce from Fort Lauderdale, president of the Asian American Federation of Florida (AAFF) and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale-based National Agency to Nurture the Aged and the Youth (NANAY) presented a framed “Paint A New Portrait of Florida” 2011 Census Brochure cover to the governor. She said that AAFF, with more than 75 member Asian American organizations, working diligently with Governor Crist’s 2011 Census Complete Count Committee, proudly announced that the population figure for Asian Americans has now risen from 266,000 in year 2000 to almost half a million, the fastest growing ethnic group in the State.

Li Na’s win to inspire young Chinese Li Na became China’s first-ever Grand Slam singles champion in the French Open final. Newly-crowned French Open champion Li Na has set her sight on next month’s Wimbledon Open. Li claimed the first grand slam women’s singles title for China and Asia, beating defending champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) in the French Open. The triumph also raised the 29-year-old to world number four from seven.
Li Na also changed the sports in China permanently. Today Tennis is the third-most watched sport on Chinese television, behind basketball and soccer, and is gaining popularity among players. Last year, it was estimated that 14 million people in China regularly play tennis, up from 1 million when the sport returned to the Olympics in 1988. That’s three times as many as in France and about half the 27 million estimated tennis players in the U.S.
“Today is a dream comes true. When I was a young player, I wanted be a Grand Slam champion,” said Li Na. Find your passion and stick with it.

School children in China Do Michael Jackson Dance Routines Every Morning A middle school in China has given up their regular acrobatic exercises. Instead, school children started to dance like Michael Jackson. More than 700 students’ stage mass performances of Michael Jackson dance routines appeared in a school in Chongqing City in southwest China. Their favorite robotic routine - from the video of his hit Dangerous – is believed to have been inspired by internet footage of prisoners in the Philippines performing MJ’s Thriller dance. They have also choreographed their routine to the Korean hit melody, ‘Nobody’, by the Wonder Girls, in the past, said the principal. Headmaster Wan Lu, 36, explained: “We used to practice tai chi but the students said they wanted to do something more modern. The video ends with a message from the school’s faculty, reading “all our efforts are worthwhile as long as the children grow up happily.” This video showing more than 700 school children dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” has taken the Internet by storm.

very year on April 30th at 10am World Tai Chi & Qigong Day occurs because thousands of people worldwide who share a common vision of hope & healing for our planet and her people come together each year to organize events in 65 nations.
April 30, 2011 marks World Tai Chi and Qigong Day and at Barber Park a disciplined group of practitioners of all ages and knowledge levels come here for one reason: To heal the world with their “Qi” one step, one breath at a time. This is what the event is all about. Everyone around the world does these meditation in motion exercises at 10 a.m. in their time zones, which creates a “healing wave” and promotes the benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong. I was very honored to read and receive for the group a proclamation from the Mayor of Orlando, Buddy Dyer proclaiming this day, April 30th, 2011, World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. After a group photo, it was now about time to start the event. Everyone found their places and at precisely 10:00 a.m. started to do their forms, which some were as long as 20 minutes and shorter forms were just repeated until everyone was finished. I asked the participants about their experiences which were very similar and unique. We all then sat down to a Pot Luck lunch where everyone shared their food and drinks. After giving a brief discussion of the history of Tai Chi and Qigong, I then turned it over into a question and answer session where

novice student Maria asked “how long should I practice my Tai Chi each day?” I told her at least 30 minutes a day because this is a slow aerobic exercise which massages your joints and ligaments and makes your body more flexible and pliable and it also improves your body’s balance, which leads to less slip and falls and gives you a more energetic and youthful look - which increases your longevity. Sifu Cliff Black posed another great question to the group: “Which is more important, the student or the teacher?” The group thought for a minute and was split down the middle 50/50. Sifu Cliff said, the answer is, you need both of them because if this art is to survive, you need a knowledgeable teacher and a willing and disciplined student. If one of these is missing, the information cannot get passed on. The “lineage” will stop. The group then found a partner and practiced “Push Hands”, which is the martial aspect of Tai Chi Chuan where awareness of yourself, your partner and the surroundings is the key to getting better at this disciplined longterm exercise . The day was coming to an end and I felt everyone who was there shared and became a little more aware of the true depths that
Tai Chi and Qigong has to offer and our positive “Qi” energy took one step and one breath closer to healing the world! As Tai Chi teaches the body to move and change more easily and effortlessly, it provides a model for the mind and heart to change more easily, too. Death the great puzzle

A person who died during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake was born at 1pm on May 17, 1972. Another person born in the same hour and date remains alive in Hong Kong. A mainlander who died during the Japanese tsunami was born on March 18, 1955. Another person with similar birth details lives in Malaysia. What these examples tell us is very clear: there is a flaw in using your birth date when seeking to divine your destiny from fortune tellers or fung shui masters. The life-reading experts can tell you all sorts of things in a beautiful and nicely written Chinese poem. But one thing is for sure: they can’t tell you your actual date of death.
If you believe in karma, you know that only saints are sent to heaven while those with sins are sent back to Earth to rerun their life. This is to say that all humans are not perfect and often make mistakes. We are here to live again to make us better - although some often make the same mistakes again and again, creating a larger and larger karmic debt. A collective debt - mistakes by the same group of people - is especially detrimental. In my previous article, I pointed out that respecting others will certainly change your course of life. It is that simple. However strong you are, you will still not be as strong as a tsunami.
If anyone can, please let me know so I may learn from him or her.
However rich or significant you are, you can still became a victim of an earthquake.
I have been searching for great masters for the past 15 years - and I am still searching.
So love your parents, love your country and, above all, be nice to Mother Earth, which nurtures us.
No one can tell you precisely when you will die - or even the exact date and locations of disasters, such as the quake and tsunami in Japan.
Thought of the day: We are not whole, we are only part of a whole.!
We have to understand that all living beings are on Earth for a reason.
Go with the flow The five elements of ancient Chinese metaphysics refer to the study of mountains, medicine, forecasting, astrology and facial reading. But there is a caveat because once a name is given, say, to a cup, then everything else is not a cup. Another example is when water is in a bottle, it becomes a bottle; when water is in a bowl, it becomes a bowl. This is Tao. The term fung shui in Chinese simply means wind and water, but wait - this is not so simple in ancient texts and applications. Ancient scriptures use the broader term kan yu, which refers to anything above (sky and cosmos) and on the ground. So actually the term fung shui refers not only to wind and water, but to the formation of the universe. The Tao is formed from darkness. Yin and yang emerged from that and formed heaven (cosmic sky) and earth, then male and female, and so on. One can see that Tao is not about religion, it is more philosophical and theoretically oriented toward explaining the universe - as does kan yu and fung shui. Many, especially those with religious beliefs, think that kan yu or fung shui is superstitious and would rather not talk about it. I’ve had a professor, a government minister and others refuse to talk to me about this, and I can’t blame them because I was once a skeptic as well.

Twenty years ago, I was in the United States teaching martial arts to doctors, lawyers and accountants. Their enthusiasm and interest toward Oriental arts was intense. A student came to talk to me about fung shui. Being young, I tried to change the subject by saying to him that this was superstition. I can still remember seeing the frustration and anger in him as he replied: “How can you simply disregard your 5,000 years of Chinese heritage?” I was shocked by his remarks. He then went on to elaborate that fung shui is nothing but a study of the environment and our surroundings - we are all involved whether we like it or not. So do not belittle fung shui, just go with the flow. Thought of the day: I do charity not because I have plenty but because I know what the needy do not have. Master Kerby Kuek has been practicing Feng Shui and life reading for more than 10 years. His areas of expertise include Chinese astrology, name analysis, face reading, as well as I-Ching. Kuek strongly believes that Chinese Metaphysics is nothing superstition: It is a combination of formulae, experiences and common sense, whereby a trained master can skillfully integrate it into your daily life and thus help you to achieve your personal and financial goals. Asian American Chamber of Commerce Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at the Orlando City Hall By Kathy Llamas C.K. Lau The month of May was an extremely busy month for the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. As with most Asian organizations not only in the state of Florida but around the nation, we commemorate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May and had many activities lined up. On May 9th, the Asian American Chamber hosted leaders of 20 Asian organizations at the Orlando City Hall during the city council meeting to accept the proclamation of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in the city of Orlando from Mayor Buddy Dyer. The AACC also presented Mayor Buddy Dyer with the Diversity Champion Award given at the Golden Dragon Awards to the City of Orlando for its outstanding contributions and positive impacts to the Central Florida community and for encouraging diversity and inclusion. The next day, May 10, the AACC was at city hall again to celebrate with a Meet and
Greet Business After Hours. Several city and county leaders were present to welcome AACC members and guests. Mayor Buddy Dyer addressed the over 200 attendees and read the proclamation for those who were not present at the previous city council meeting. Other officials present included Commissioners Patty Sheehan, Tony Ortiz and Lui Damiani as well as Sheriff Jerry Demings, Outgoing Police Chief Val Demings and the new Police Chief Paul Rooney. The AACC also unveiled the chamber’s newest corporate sponsors Darden Restaurants (Jade Sponsor), SunTrust (Bamboo Sponsor) and OUC (Bamboo Sponsor).
June 23 at Universal Orlando Resort’s City Walk where the AACC will be joined by the Hispanic Chamber and the African American Chamber in the signing of an affiliate agreement between the three chambers. The AACC is also celebrating its 25th Anniversary and celebrating on August 5 by having a Multi-Chamber Global Business Expo to be held at the Doubletree Hotel, Downtown Orlando. Tzu Chi Foundation – Compassion and Relief On May 8, Tzu Chi Foundation Orlando Chapter celebrated Vesak Buddha’s 2555th Birthday. Hundred members and volunteers of Tzu Chi Foundation gathered not only celebrated the birth of Buddha, but also the Mother’s day and Global Tzu Chi Day. This “3 in 1” event started off with the prayer for Buddha and world peace. Light vegetarian dessert and refreshments served throughout the celebration.

Thai New Year 2011—
Songkran Festival Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year (also known as “Water Festival”) which celebrated from April 13-15. It is an occasion of joy and family reunion. It is celebrated with religious ceremony and public festivities. People enjoy splashing water on each other as they believe that water can wash away bad luck, and splashing water over friends or anyone will give them a New Year blessing. When the young pour scented water on their elder’s hands, the elders, in return, wish them good health, happiness and prosperity. Local Thai community in Central Florida gathered at Wat Florida Dhammaram (Thai Temple) on April 17th to celebrate the new year. Attendees had a chance to sample the authentic Thai food such as papaya salad, Thai grilled chicken, sausage, pad thai, and fresh vegetables. Other performances include live band music and dances. LAO New Year 2011: Wet and Fun!

Lao New Year is known as “Boon Peemai” in Lao. It is also called “Boon Deuan Ha”, the Fifth month festival, because it is celebrated during the fifth month of the Lao lunar calendar that marks the end of the dry season and beginning of the rice planting season ahead of the monsoonal rains, or “Boon Hode Num”, the Water Festival, because water-throwing is one of the main events of the festival. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated from the 13th to the 15th of April. This year, the Lao community in central Florida celebrated their New Year on the 23rd and 24th of April at Wat Navaram Buddhist Temple, 2381 Narcissus Ave., Sanford, Florida. Crowds from all over Florida and many parts of the United States had a chance to taste many authentic Lao foods and experience a variety of Laotian cultural shows and dances, live music, procession of Miss Sangkhan (Miss New Year). Buddha’s Birthday Celebrated at the Guang Ming Temple On May 15th 2011, Guang Ming Temple celebrated the Buddha’s Birthday, the most celebrated festival in the Buddhist world, with over 1,500 guests coming throughout Florida. The festival started with a welcoming guest ceremony and traditional offerings of candles, fruits, flowers and incense by members of Buddha’s Light International Association. After the prayer and wishes by the Venerables, Dragon Legend’s two northern lions led the guests to Buddha’s Bathing ceremony signifying “the purified body and mind”.

The rest of the day’s activities included food fair, cultural art performances, the tea ceremony demonstration, a Japanese Floral Exhibition and raffle. Guang Ming Temple, built in 2007, serves the Buddhist community by offering Sunday Service, Buddhism studies (both Chinese and English), Meditation Class, Chinese language and cultural classes, and many seminars and workshops.
