Celebrate Buddha Day, Mother’s Day and Tzu Chi Day The second Sunday of May is a very special day, as there are three meaningful occasions that fall on that day: Mother’s Day, Buddha Day, and Tzu Chi Day. In 2000, the second Sunday of May was designated by Taiwan’s government as the official Buddha Day in Taiwan. In Tzu Chi, it became the official Global Tzu Chi Day following Tzu Chi’s 30th anniversary. (Tzu Chi was founded on March 24, 1966 on the lunar calendar.) The Tzu Chi Foundation Miami and Orlando Division respectively hosted their 2012 Mother’s Day, Buddha Day, and Tzu Chi Day ceremony event for over 300 members and relatives on May 13th. Orlando division welcomed the guests to this special event at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine. For Tzu Chi, this day has many meanings: (1) promoting the field of reverence (敬田); (2) promoting the field of gratitude (恩田); that is to be grateful to your parents and teachers and (3) promoting the field of compassion (悲田) and that is to give of ourselves to help others. In helping others, we might seem to be the “giver”, yet we must be grateful to those who receive our aid because others’ suffering awakens us and makes us feel that we’re very blessed. Only when people can feel they’re blessed can they truly be happy and have a blessed life. Moreover, given that there

8

is so much suffering in the world, we are truly fortunate to be someone who has the capacity to help. We are also fortunate because we have many people who share our ideals and unite with us to carry them out.

The Buddha Day Ceremony Transcending the divisions of religion: Dharma Master Cheng Yen says that all Tzu Chi volunteers should be grateful to Sakyamuni Buddha, because Tzu Chi is from Buddhism and Sakyamuni Buddha was the one who founded this religion. It is Master’s hope that with the spirit of the Buddha’s teachings, we can transcend the divisions between religions, and regardless of religion and race, spread the spirit of the Buddha’s love to every corner of the world and gather the power from everyone in order to best serve the community.

The meaning behind the rituals in the ceremony Although the water which we use in the ceremony is not plenty, we need to visualize it as the water of wisdom that can purify our defilements and afflictions; we will be as Buddha, realizing the Dharmakaya, the Dharma-Body (the pure body). Bowing and the use of scented water: In the past, the way to express one’s reverence toward

the Buddha is to prostrate oneself with one’s head at the Buddha’s feet, touching the Buddha’s feet. Today, in the ceremony, we should have that same sense of reverence as we symbolically do the same by bowing and dipping our fingers in the water (as if to touch the Buddha’s feet) and putting our palms together in reverence. The fragrance of the water, symbolizing the redolence of the Buddha’s virtue, remains with us, just as we wish that the Buddha’s virtue may abide in our hearts.

Every day is Buddha Day To celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday we have many solemn commemorations to express our reverence toward the Buddha. However, the truest and most earnest appreciation and reverence for the Buddha is to consider every day as Buddha Day. We should always treat others with gratitude, respect, and love. C.K. Lau

Tampa’s Asia Fest celebrates

 By Carol Lim

By Jackson Hewang, C.K. Lau, Robert Chan, Peter Lau

National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Races and Asia Fest 2012 brought out huge crowds to downtown Tampa on Saturday, April 28th. The 29th annual Asia Fest was at Cotanchobee Park next to the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where the Republican National Convention will be from August 27-30th. Since 1982, Tampa’s Asia Fest has celebrated National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. The Asian-American Coalition of

Florida plans the festival and invites VIPs from Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, Mac Dill Air Force Base and consulate generals of Asian countries. Flag holders represented the United States, Florida, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, Nepal, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn proclaimed April 28th as Asia Fest Day.

“To our friends, coalition partners, thank you very much for all you do for us. You have stood shoulder to shoulder with us in some very tough times and we appreciate the fact that this is a shared sacrifice and that of the young men and women in our armed forces on behalf of freedom will not be forgotten. Thank you to our coalition partners and friends,” said Mayor Buckhorn. “This is always such a great festival in downasiatrendmagazine.com

town. There are thousands of people here and I couldn’t be happier. This colorful event helps promote a better understanding and appreciation of diversity. It also provides the opportunity for the entire community to come together in celebration,” added Mayor Buckhorn. “It’s nice to come out to celebrate diversity within our community - 1.2 million people covering 1,150 square miles. It’s when we have festivals and gatherings like this, that we’re able to promote diversity within our own culture. The Board of County Commissioners especially recognizes the importance that the Asian community plays inside our county,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner. said Sokha Im, Asia Fest’s Executive Director.

Visitors paid for food and $5-$10 for parking in lots near the Times Forum.

“The attendance was the largest we’ve had and the performances were wonderful,” said Im.

The festival featured cultural entertainment and hosted the 4th Annual Miss Asia Fest pageant. The Drum Dance by the Tampa United Korean School was a hit with the crowd.

“We were delighted to see such a large enthusiastic audience. What a beautiful sight!” said Kimi Springsteen, Ph.D., Hillsborough County’s Asian American & International Liaison. Springsteen is the founder of Asia Fest in Tampa.

Did it meet organizers’ expectations? “Absolutely! Our goal was to share our culture and traditions with the community and those who may have known about Asia Fest before came out and were able to experience some of those traditions. I also felt the promotion of Asia Fest this year was much more active which allowed us to reach a wider audience to attend the event,”

With lots of sunshine and temperatures soaring to 90 degrees, visitors sought relief in the shade and drank lots of water to stay hydrated at this family-friendly, cash-only, no alcohol festival. Some visitors also wore colorful Asian costumes, hats and used parasols in the spirit of the occasion. Tampa Police at the festival reported no

There were 33 races with 55 teams of American, Asian, Canadian and Pan American teams sponsored by local businesses and groups. Tampa’s Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans won a bronze medal in the C Division Championship Final, race #29 with a time of 1:53.06. “We still need to do a lot to improve. We want to win the gold medal in Division B next year,” said Julia Hwang, one of the founders of SACA .

The Chinese American Association of Central Florida’s dragon boat team, CHARGE, won its first medal--a silver medal in the D Division Championship Final in race #27 with a time of 2:01.30. “We are thrilled to get our first medal. After all, it is not about the medal. It is about the friendship and teamwork we establish through the year. We encourage everyone to try out this team sport which originated thousands years ago in China,” said Shally Wong, the president of the Chinese American Association of Central Florida. “We shall always cherish and celebrate to honor the motherlands we left behind us and embrace our adopted country, home of our future

When Business and Culture Meet

Engaged guests listening to various speakers

 By Kristina Huang

A small organization called TCCTF, which is known as the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay, hosted their 8th Annual Meeting during Mother’s Day weekend. Many members and guests had the chance to access one of the most exclusive social clubs in the Tampa Bay Area. Imagine what a view from the 41st floor of the tallest building in Tampa could look like. One step inside the ballroom and you could see the Port of Tampa and have an entire overlook of Downtown Tampa. Not to get too distracted with the jaw dropping location, we had a handful of guests appear at the meeting. Many student representatives from the University Of South Florida’s Taiwanese Student Association came out to help with the event activities. Board members from the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Greater Orlando came out to show support to our local chamber. The vice president of the Tampa Bay International Business Council, Glynis-Ross Munro, also made an appearance to help spread the message about conducting international business in the area. Today, markets are becoming more open to foreign investments. Over a significant period we

will see many transitions occur to become a more globalized economy. One group of young professionals called the Tampa Taiwan Trade helped explained to our guests about the tremendous business opportunities available in China and Taiwan. Their consulting firm offers a range of services from identifying potential suppliers and consumers to customized packaged services such as language translation. A special guest speaker, Lee-En Chung, joined us in sharing her eight secrets to a successful career. She shared an inspiring story that mentioned a major point of not being the most brilliant person in the world, but with the right positive attitude and determination anyone can get as far in life as they want. Keep in mind that staying happy, building strong relationships and saying thank you to the people in your life are some secrets to her success. With the impact of emerging young leaders and the influence of business owners, we find that the possibilities are endless. As Robert Chen finished his presidency term, TCCTF announced their new board members and president for the 2012-2013 year. We welcomed Wen Chung, Joanna Chang, Tina Chen, and Alvin Chang to the TCCTF board of directors. With the guidance of

the new president, Wen Chung, the upcoming year will be filled with more exciting events and opportunities. From what I gathered, this was not just a luncheon filled with students, business associates, and affiliated organizations, but a group of people who came to support the same mission. Our mission is to promote Taiwan’s business opportunities between two countries. Actively engaging ourselves with the Taiwanese Chamber of North America and the World Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce over the past few years has allowed us to build the right connection and relationship between Tampa and Taiwan. Relationships between all the organizations continue to grow stronger each year as we continually work together. TCCTF will continue to build a greater presence nationally and internationally. Under a new direction of elected board members and the influence of a new president, anything is possible. Visit our website or facebook for current or upcoming activities! King Kong reigns in Fitness World

 By Ricky Ly

- South Florida’s Vincent Kong wins 1st Place at SBNF Bodybuilding Contest Vincent Kong, originally from Pembroke Pines, Florida and a graduate of the University of Florida, recently won first place for the SNBF Supernatural Bodybuilding and Fitness Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. A past president of the UF Chinese American Student Association and a brother of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, he is currently working for a business management consulting firm. Asia Trend Magazine recently spoke to Vincent about his inspiration and advice for those of us who want to become healthier. His inspiration came one day when he became tired of working out without any clear goals and decided to change that by competing and see how far he can go with this goal.. Dedication, consistency, and self motivation with having the goal in mind is some of his advice to those who seek to improve their physical fitness.

16

JUN 2012

asiatrendmagazine.com

His diet during the journey to bodybuilding was relatively clean. He cooked his own meals, mostly high in protein and high in vegetables with a lot of chicken breast, brocolli, and green beans. His work out routine included high repetitions and lots of sets as well as many compound exercises including pull ups, dumb bell bench press, squats, dumb bell overhead press, dead lifts and cardio exercise. The routine usually lasts about three to four hours a day in the gym - starting with 45 min of cardio in the morning and 2 hours weights and 45 min of low intense cardio at night after work. It helped him to weigh yourself in the morning and keep a running log to track his progress. Asia Trend: What was your biggest challenge during your path to victory? Vincent Kong: I think the biggest challenge was just self discipline. Seeing other people go

out and eat whatever they want while you sit with your chicken breast and broccoli. It’s a huge mind game but every time I felt like I was going to slip I imagined myself on stage getting 2nd place. The worst feeling would be on stage getting that 2nd place trophy and thinking back to the time I ate that big mac or those french fries or that milkshake and knowing i didn’t give it 100%. AT: Do you take any supplements or protein for your work outs? VK: I’ve honestly kept my supplementation pretty basic. I take creatine for recovery, whey protein for quick digesting protein, multivitamin for anything i might lack in my diet, casein protein before bed to prevent muscle catabolization, and BCAA’s during workout for energy. I’ve taken many more supplements but in my opinion they had little to no affect on me.

AT: Did you have any mentors or people who helped you on your way to bodybuilding? VK: I followed a few pro bodybuilders in terms of motivation. But as far as mentors I was working with a prep coach in Atl, GA he really helped me with my nutrition and diet as well as supplementation and workouts. He didn’t personally train me but he did play a huge role in my success so far. AT: How long have you been working out? When did you start seriously in your goal for the bodybuilding competition? VK: I’ve been working out for probably 11 years now on and off. But really started taking it seriously in 2011 when i decided to do a competition. My coach and I started working together on my

diet and body composition May 2011, from there we just tracked my progress and decided that an April 2012 show would be my best bet. After the date was set it was really just hard work and dedication from there until the show date. AT: Did you have a daily calorie intake goal? VK: I wouldn’t say my calorie intake was as important as my macro-nutrient intake. I ended up taking in about 2600 calories a day (pre-contest) but that could vary upon my carbohydrate intake. Some days I took more, some less. It really depends on the person. There’s no cookie cutter formula. AT: What have reactions been from friends and strangers been?

VK: Two main things was my leg development and conditioning (size and cuts) and the spray tan. #1 question asked me has been”how did you get that tan off?” AT: You travel a lot for work, how do you keep up your diet on the road? VK: It’s all about making healthier choices. When eating out, find restaurants in the area that have healthy options. Instead of getting burger fries, get chicken salad. “Dream Comes True” for a Doraemon fan The Fujiko F. Fujio Museum (藤子・F・不二雄ミュ ージアム), also informally known as the Doraemon Museum, is a fanciful art museum found in the suburbs of Kawasaki. It is based on the work of Fujiko F. Fujio who is the creator of Doraemon, an influential series about a robotic cat from the 22nd century who travels back in time to befriend a group of kids. The museum requires advance reservations. Visit the Fujiko F. Fujio museum will warm your heart and makes you smile! Doraemon fans go to this museum like having him to come life. Doraemon has been around for decades and remains extremely popular today. So although the museum is aimed at children, it also appeals to adults who grew up with the series. While not large, it has a pretty extensive collection of Fujiko F. Fujio’s work, including original artwork from Doraemon, 21-emon, Kaibutsukun, and several of Fujiko’s other series. An excellent English audio guide is included with admission and has a

lot of commentary on Fujiko’s life and the various artwork on display. The second, more hands-on half of the museum is aimed toward small children. It features a theater displaying an original short film, a manga reading room, and several activity and play rooms. A few life-size statues of Doraemon characters, that you can touch and take pictures with, are found outside around the museum grounds. There is also a cafe selling Doraemon themed dishes, and a well stocked gift shop with character goods from Doraemon and Fujiko’s other series. Don’t forget to print out the website instructions in English and Japanese, that way if you need to ask for help it’s easier for the person helping you. Fujiko F. Asian Chamber shares a Power Lunch hosted by solar leader OUC

Members and guests of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce packed an Orlando Utilities Commission training center on May 22 for a Chamber installment of the 2012 series of “Lunch & Learn” workshops.

“Power Lunch – Green Business Strategies” was sponsored by the Orlando Utilities Commission and organized by OUC Diversity Coordinator Dr. Bridget Lee. The interactive session ranged from a virtual tour of the first solar farm in Orange County to budget-saving energy solutions for businesses and residents. “One of the most successful elements of the Asian Chamber’s 25th anniversary Global Expo in 2011 were the workshops featuring presenta-

tions on a range of topics of interest to small businesses and the Asian community,” said Chamber president Gail Rayos. “Starting in 2012, the Chamber has added more frequent “lunch and learn” programs to meet the demand of its members for business market insights and professional development.” In the coming months and through early 2013, the Chamber already is working to book new presentations on topics such as doing business with Asia to small business communications solutions. “The Power Lunch, hosted by our corporate sponsor OUC, also was an effective program for new guests to experience in a smaller format the depth of programming the Chamber provides,”

C.K. Lau

Rayos said. The Lunch and Learn participants ranged from real estate professionals interested in homeowner programs to small business owners asking questions about incentives and even to other renewable energy source providers. As part of its commitment to education, OUC regularly hosts informational workshops to educate the general public on solar water heating and solar electric systems. Homeowners or small business owners who are interested in learning about the energy savings presented at the AACC workshop, can go to www.ouc.com/en/residential/Solar/

Asian Night 2012 On May 9th, University High School’s Asian Student Association was proud to present its annual Asian Night. This event was meant to bring the community together through diverse performances that touched base on each Asian culture. Remarkably, this night was filled with entertainment by local talents as well as its own members. Some of these performances included Chinese Lion dancing, Indian and Polynesian dancing. The show was also a memorable accomplishment due to special performances such as Phillip Mahoney, Disney’s Epcot Dance Team, UCF’s Filipino Student Association and Asian Student Association. Our very own members also had the opportunity to perform. This comprised of the Fili-

The night of May 9th also entailed an appealing dinner bursting with assorted cuisines sponsored by Hawaiian Grindz, Viet Thai Café, SusHi, Pho House, and DeGuzman’s oriental market. Asian Night was a great success thanks to several teachers, students, and the strong Asian Community that Orlando holds. We all look forward to continuing this occasion and improving it all years to come. UHS’s Asian Student Association is composed of 108 members including the 20112012 officers: President Kathleen Santiago, Vice President Andrew Uyeda, Secretary

Jaclyn Mendoza, Treasurer Andreya Rivera and Historian Christina Wong. This association has been at University High School for years and has gradually been continued by various Asian American Students. The main purpose of this group is to inform and spread the Asian culture in various enjoyable forms such as through Asian Night. This club would not have been successful if it were not for our sponsors throughout the year. The sponsor for UHS’s ASA this year is Ms. Karena Chunoo, who made this year unforgettable. Bringing communities together through

 By Asia Trend

The Mills 50 District – the business district surrounding the intersection of Mills Avenue and Colonial Drive/Route 50 – is known for its bars, clubs, local restaurants and Asian businesses. Now it can be noted as a street gallery of sorts for local, upcoming artists. Selected local artists transformed fourteen transportation utility boxes, also known as the big, ugly metal boxes seen at intersections into colorful works of art. The purpose of the project was to create an environment which depicts the community’s diversity, creativity, commerce and neighborhoods. The ultimate goal: beautify the district.

“This project provided an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents while bringing beauty and awareness to the Mills 50 district. The boxes exemplify the diversity and creativity of the district!” said Joanne Grant, Executive Director of Mills 50 Main Street.

One of the artists, Dr. Puxiao Cen from Florida Heart Group accompanied by Chinese Calligrapher Peter Lau completed one art box filled with Asian element. ‎”A total of 80 hours for this artwork project, from design to completion. Thank you for giving me the chance,” said Dr. Puxiao Cen. “I knew about this art box project during phrase one back in 2011 but did not have enough time to search the Asian artists. Thank you Joanne Grant for reaching out to the Asian community again and the City of Orlando for allowing us to be part of this meaningful project,” said Shally Wong, the President of the Chinese American Association of Central Florida. “Everyone should agree that this project at Mills 50 district will not be completed without an Asian piece.” The “art box” project was so popular that fourteen additional utility cabinets have been painted. The last call for artists produced 50 submissions by twenty six artists! Next time you drive by the Mills 50 area, make sure to check them out.

Chanoyu in Florida

groceries. What I yearn for, however, is the implements and experience of a proper tea ceremony.

Japanese culture has been admired in the United States since the late 1800’s and there are organizations and institutes for chanoyu (the” tea ceremony”)—that quintessentially Japanese practice—in large cosmopolitan areas likes San Francisco and New York City. But what do you do when you’re fascinated by chado (the way of tea) and living in Florida? Brewed green tea (sencha) and powdered tea leaves (matcha) have become increasingly popular since their health benefits were broadcast by medical studies and the mass communications media. So the tea itself is widely available in specialty stores and, of course, Asian

Why study chanoyu? For me it’s because I love Japanese culture, because tea provides a brief respite from my busy life style, and in the hope that some of the grace and serenity of my sensei may transfer itself eventually to me. Believe it or not, there are several chajin or tea masters within a few hours’ drive of my home in West Central Florida. Some are Japanese, some not, but all have studied and practiced many years. I am extremely fortunate to find quality instruction relatively convenient. Maybe there are some tea instructors living near you too. To find them, ask at tea shops, local colleges, museums, or Japanese clubs and societies in your area. To satisfy my hunger for beautiful tea objects and to fill my need for student supplies, I turn to the Internet and, invariably, Rakuten. I have sat for hours, Japanese dictionary and online translator at hand, searching for just the right summerstyle chawan (tea bowl) and then deciphering correspondence from the stores. My sensei

was impressed with the bowl when I took it to class. It’s a lovely but not-tooexpensive oatmealcolored bowl with a firefly motif. Since then, I’ve discovered the Rakuten English language interface. It has helped make transactions less stressful for those of us with only a beginner’s grasp of Japanese. I look forward to the day when the English site will make it easier to choose shipping methods other than EMS for my inexpensive purchases. Why not join me in the exploration of traditional Japanese culture? Let’s slow down a bit, contemplate a single flower in the tokonoma alcove, enjoy the company of like-minded friends, learn a few words of Japanese, and appreciate the beauty of Japan’s ceramic arts. Reading about the development of chanoyu introduces you to Japanese cultural history—its politics, art, philosophy and religion. You too can learn to savor the bite of matcha! To me, the taste is reminiscent of lying in a field of tall grass on a late summer afternoon. Practice chanoyu and you will loosen your knees, calm your mind, and nurture your spirit.

aims for the first Olympic medal in badminton for the United States Gunawan is a former Olympic gold medalist and world champion for Indonesia, and now represents the United States after the grant of U.S. Citizenship he has wanted for many years. “I’ve been looking forward to this (citizenship) for a long time,” he says, his emotions getting ahead of his English. “Very lucky me that I got this opportunity to stay and work in the U.S. and then raise up my family here.”

Gunawan and the Vietnamese-born Howard stunned the badminton world when they nailed the United States’ first men’s doubles title at the World Championships in 2005. Now 37, Gunawan is taking one shot at earning the United States’ first Olympic medal in badminton before going back to his badminton academy in California and coaching the next generation of players to what he hopes is the

Olympic medal stand. Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach will compete in men’s doubles, while Rena Wang will compete in women’s singles in the 2012 Olympic Games. Badminton is one of the most played sports in the world which requires fast reflexes, steady concentration and extraordinary hand-eye coordination.
