—Extraordinary Performances in Jacksonville The “Embrace China” Goodwill Mission of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, serving as a messenger of the spring just as plum blossoms would do, has brought season’s greetings and warmth of the early spring to the Chinese and other Asian communities and their American friends in the northern Florida region after their successful shows in the Northeast US region and Miami. According to the ancient customs in China, the New Year’s celebrations will not end until the 15th of the January of the lunar calendar passes. They traveled long and far during the holiday season to present performance shows to the friends in local communities and to mingle with them in order to happily celebrate the Lunar New Year together. The gala celebration started with the arousing dance “Red-Hot Start of a New Year” by the JCA’s Dance Troupe. It was followed by the excellent singing and folk music and acrobatic shows by such award-winning performing artists including singers like Qiao Jun, Qin Ke-ren, Zhang Chen (who is dubbed “Little Song Zu-ying in China), Geng Wei-hua, Cao Fu-jia and instrument performance musician Li Xin and acrobats like Zhong Yan and those from Sino-Elite Group. The audience was tightly grasped by the performances and they gave loud applauses and children went up the stage to present flowers to the performers. Artists like Cheng Fang-yuan, Shi Zhan-ming and Chen Si-si were apparently touched by the enthusiasm from the audience and gave several encores. The audience noticed that the goodwill mission was not only a first-class art group, but also a highly efficient team with all members, from the art director to performers and to the sound technician, working in unison
for a common goal. Ms. Wu Jing, the “lark from military barracks,” impressed the audience with her spectacular singing and her additional role as the emcee. Zhang Qi, the “Queen of the Art of Faces Changes,” served as a stage technician together with Mr. Li Xin and others besides her stunning “face changing” magic. The gala celebration culminated in the splendid affectionate songs including “Paths of Beauty” by Chen Si-si, who is hailed as the “Number One Singer of the New-Style of Folk Songs” in China today and is well known at both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Her encore song “Tune of Dragon Boat”, showing strong local styles in central China, formed a diaChen Zhang and JCA Dancers

logue between the hundreds from the audience and the star. At the end of the show, people streamed onto the stage to chat with and to congratulate the performers and took photos together. Mr. Yu Hanhua, Chairman of Board of Directors of Tampa Bay Chinese School, said that this celebration is certainly one of the best he ever experienced during his more than twenty years in the States. Mr. Yu Bo-ren, Deputy Consul General from the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, commented that this is by far the best performance show by Chinese artists and most touching interaction between the audience and the performers during his two and a half years’ stint as a diplomat. In her blog article she created during the goodwill mission’s busy trip in the Washington D.C. area, Chen Si-si, the folk song star wrote, “Next, we will travel to more cities and to happily sing and to celebrate the Lunar New Year with more Chinese and American friends so as to convey our affections and love for our follow Chinese and their friends as well.” Affections and feelings

for fellow Chinese and their friends, Lunar New Year celebration and homesickness, the indivisible unity among the Chinese the world over, have been the themes of the brilliant performances by the goodwill mission and their joint performers from the local areas. The message, resonating with the songs and applauses, was reaching the farthest corners of the earth. A big and heart-felt “Thank you” to the “Embrace China” Goodwill Mission of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese! Meanwhile, we express herein our deepest and sincerest gratitude for those JCA members, friends and sponsoring individuals and corporations for JCA whose selfless efforts and/or donations made this 2010 North Florida Lunar New Year Gala Celebration a tremendous success. Drift to Danshui 流 浪 到 淡 水 Vivid Vistas and Exceptional Edible Enigmas Abound in a Wondrous Waterfront Taipei Town By Scott B. Freiberger
As the MRT pulls into Danshui Station, the last stop on the red line heading north from Taipei, the sun glitters high above Guanyin Mountain . This massive mountain surrounded by eighteen smaller peaks towers 616 meters above sea level and is named after Guan Yin, the Bodhisattva goddess of mercy. Guanyin Mountain, a northern Taiwan landmark, beckons hikers and adventurous day-trippers to Bali (Taiwan’s Bali, not the one in Indonesia). Danshui turns into a carnival of sorts on weekends as talented artists arrive to portray those willing to pose for thirty minutes and part with US$15. Nearby, local musicians perform. Behind the station is Riverbank Park, where cylindrical wind socks with vermeil and champagnecolored ribbons, funky animals and divine-looking dragons soar. Inside the park is a rink where young people show off their latest moves on roller blades and enjoy pony rides around the adjacent circle, courtesy of Beach Country Riding Club.

Two blind performers, guitarist Jin Men-wang and his accordion-playing musical cohort Li Bing-hui, left an indelible print. Jin, whose real name was Wang Ying-tan, lost his left hand and eyesight on the island of Kinmen at the age of fourteen when a package he found turned out to be an explosive device. Undeterred, he turned down government assistance and performed various jobs, including telephone operator, to support himself; due to his passion for music, he strapped iron sheets onto his left arm and taught himself how to play the guitar. Danshui native Li heard Jin crooning by the river and the two began performing together, rising to stardom with their unique brand of Taiwanese folk songs. This dynamic duo is well-known on Taiwan for their Taiwanese karaoke super-hit, “Drift to Danshui”. Unfortunately, Jin passed away from a heart ailment at the age of 49 on May 5, 2002. Li, who had once supported himself by giving massages, now runs a successful chain of local parlors. Many of his employees are also blind, as seeing-impaired masseuses are known for their preciseness. You

could still hear their music and spot photos and other memorabilia of the two performers around Danshui. Taiwanese have a keen interest in lifestyle trends popular abroad, and modern cafés and coffee shops now line the road along Danshui River. Less than a two-minute walk from the MRT you’ll receive a warm welcome and superb Irish coffee at Donovan’s Coffee, Gongming Street. Jovial expat owner Tim hails from Limerick, Ireland, known for its sedate River Shannon and King John’s Castle, and the homey décor jogs memories of historical walking and boat tours. This cozy corner café boasts delectable drinks, free Wi-Fi to get you wired (along with the caffeine) and a balcony with a view. Alongside the river are ice cream vendors that offer vanilla, chocolate or mixed ice cream cones that tower over fifty centimeters for only $60. Saunter down Zhengzheng Road, Danshui Historic Street, you’ll find an entrance on Gongming Street adjacent to the park. Enticing native foods, trinkets, toys, clothing, and eating establishments beckon. Foods native to Danshui prove particularly intriguing. What are those tiny black objects, you ask? No, they’re not gun pellets, although they may appear that way, they’re chicken eggs that are cooked until they become small, black, hard and chewy. Danshui is also famous for its tantalizing tofu with green bean noodles smothered in tangy sauce, not to mention its fresh fish meatballs. To learn more stop by the quaint Fishball Museum, Zhongzheng Road, although signs are in Chinese you may enjoy some of the exhibits. A venerable Danshui establishment, which roughly translates to “delicious fishballs,” is Kekou Yuwan, Zhongzheng Road. For delectable dumplings try mainstay Le Roi Du Wonton, Zhengzheng Road. The historic Fuyo Temple, Zhongzheng Road, one of the oldest temples on Taiwan that pays homage to Matsu, Goddess of the Sea, is open 5 am to 9 pm. Adjacent to the temple is the narrow

winding alley that leads to Red Castle, Sanmin Street. Construction started on Red Castle in 1895, when invading Western nations (English, French and Dutch) used Taiwan as a military base and trading port. Times have certainly changed as Red Castle now boasts a classy café, you’ll have to climb over a hundred steps up a winding narrow alley but the frothy cappuccinos, smooth lattes and exotic fruit drinks are worth the trek. At Red Castle, outside seating offers panoramic views. Try a cappuccino, fruit smoothie or the rich vanilla popcorn. As the sun slowly sets you may hear fireworks, Chinese people believe that loud noises and scintillating colors scare off evil spirits, but you can simply relax and appreciate the ambiance.

Rev. George Leslie Mackay, a Canadian missionary born in Zorra, Oxford, Canada in 1844, had a profound influence on Danshui after arriving on Taiwan on March 9, 1872. He established Mackay Clinic, Taiwan’s first Western medical clinic, and Tamsui High School, in 1880. He also established Oxford College, now known as Alethia University, the first modern liberal arts college on Taiwan in 1882, and Tamsui Girls’ School, the first school on Taiwan dedicated to women, two years later. This revered reverend lived by his rebellious motto, “Rather burn out than rust out.” Mackay died from throat cancer on June 2, 1901, he, his family and close friends are buried just behind Tamsui High School on the school grounds on Zhenli Street (“truth street,” also named in his honor), where his son later became the school’s first principal. Mackay ordered that a wall be constructed between his tomb and the adjacent foreigner cemetery because he considered himself a Taiwanese. There are currently branches of Mackay Memorial Hospital around the island, in Taipei, Danshui, Taitung and Hsinchu. The massive Mackay Monument was erected in Dr. Mackay’s honor on Danshui Historic Street, a fitting tribute to an iconoclastic individual’s historic mission. Within walking distance is a first-class relic, Fort San Domingo, Zhongzheng Road. The fort was built by the Spanish in 1629 and later run by the Dutch. Red 26 and 836 buses stop here, taxis are available but passengers must add NT $30 to any fare that originates and ends in Danshui. Opposite
the fort you won’t need a passport to dine at The Consulate, Zhongzheng Road. Open 10:30 am to midnight, The Consulate boasts Eastern and Western dishes, as well as and fine coffees and teas. Just up the hill is Danshui White House, construction started in 1869 at a time when Taiwan was forced to open its ports to foreign trade. The town had flourished as a trading port with the West until the Japanese (1895 to 1945) made Keelung its main northern trading port in 1903 and the “white house” was abandoned as a residence for foreign customs officers. To reach Danshui White House, Zhenli Street, take the Red 26 or 836 “Danshui Historic Sites” bus to Fort San Domingo. Closed Mondays, Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day of Chinese Lunar New Year. In the same vicinity is the serene green Danshui Martyrs’ Shrine and Huwei Fortress, Zhongzheng Road. Also known as “Hobe Fort” and “Cannon Fortress,” Huwei Fortress is a relic constructed in 1886, one year after the Sino-French War, by Liu Ming-chuan, the first provincial governor on Taiwan. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm, closed Mondays, Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day of Chinese Lunar New Year, the fort is accessible on the 836 “Danshui Historic Sites” bus that departs at Danshui Station. Taipei’s answer to San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf, makes for a pleasant excursion, take bus Red 26 or 836 from Danshui Station. This sprawling park brims with kite-flyers, artists and musicians, a sea wall, pier, food and trinket shops and Lover’s Bridge, which inspires some to get down on bended knee and propose. If you purchase a kite, let it soar! The fifteen-minute speedboat ride from the wharf to Danshui Historic Street provides more excitement than many Hollywood action flicks, and local boat companies also attempt to lure tourists with fifty-minute scenic tour. You’re also certain to come across unique souvenirs and incredible edible enigmas at Danshui Night Market on Yingzhuan Road, opposite Danshui Station. In this quaint waterfront town people share laughter and students exchange class notes while discussing politics, art, economics, global events, and the most important topic of all, the opposite sex. Danshui truly captures the song, spirit and colorful essence of Taiwan, so turn off the somber soap operas and bitter blues news long enough to plan a visit. See you there!

Vietnamese New Years at St. Petersburg’s Phat Phap Buddhist Temple By Hilton Kean Jones (http://inkwatu.com)
Two of the most popular posts at Inkwatu over the few years of its existence are Wat Mongkolratanaram — Palm River Thai Temple and Songkran at Tampa’s Wat Mongkolratanaram and memories of Thailand. Wat Mongkolratanaram is a Thai Buddhist temple, but there are many other Buddhist traditions represented in the Tampa Bay area, many distinguished by the national origin of the group represented. The Inkwatu Vesak post examines some of them. The Buddhist temple nearest my home, however, is St. Petersburg’s Vietnamese Phat Phap Temple (chuaphatphap.org). Yesterday, was the lunar new year (called Tet in Vietnam) which, for Asian and other cultures that follow the lunar calendar, is a major cultural and religious event. I went to Phat Phap to join in the celebration. The grounds of Phat Phap have been undergoing a tremendous improvement with a meditation garden with statues in an expanded parking area. Much remains to do with this space, including adding sod, but the five new, beautiful, very large statues of the Buddha already form a circle and were honored and admired by the people attending the celebration. I love all the new Phat Phap statues, but my favorite is the Reclining Buddha (top of post) because it was at the golden Reclining Buddha in Bangkok (pictured right) that I had a profound transcendental experience that led me, eventually, to take lay vows (the Three Refuges) as a Buddhist. The Phat Phap Reclining Buddha is joined by two seated Buddhas and a walking Buddha (the pictures on right).
The most famous Vietnamese Buddhist monk in America is Thich Nhat Hanh who became famous for his attempts to promote peace during the Vietnam war. He has lived in exile until just recently when he was finally allowed by the Vietnamese government to return for two visits. He founded the Plum Village Meditation Center in France.
14 Mar 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
However, Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist, which is a different tradition than Phat Phap Temple. Phat Phap Temple is in the Theravada tradition. Without going into too much detail, the Theravada tradition considers only the earliest Buddhist writing as being in its canon (book of scriptures), whereas other branches of Buddhism–Mahayana (which includes Zen) and Vajrayana (which includes Tibetan Buddhism)–also accept scriptures written later than the Theravada canon. Despite these technical divisions (akin to denominations in Christianity) all Buddhists believe the same basics. The best, least sectarian, easiest to understand, short source of information on Buddhism, I believe, is by Barbara O’Brien (buddhism.about.com) who also has a good, free newsletter. Notice in the picture, the position of the Buddha’s hands. That’s a tradition of hand gestures, called mudras, that are found in both Hindu and Buddhist icons. Here (www.thaiwebsites.com/buddha.asp) are some photos and explanations of Thai Buddhas illustrating some of the Buddhist mudras with links to further explanations.
are men. There are also women Buddhas. The most important and beloved is Quan Yin (called Quan’Am in Vietnam). Quan Yin also exists in a male form, Avalokiteśvara. I like the fact that the gender of Buddhas is mutable and can take different forms. I didn’t take any pictures of the interior of Phat Phap temple simply because it didn’t feel right to me to do so since I was only a visitor. I realize that the Vietnamese community, themselves, were happily snapping family pictures inside while the monks chanted in front of the great golden Buddha. But I didn’t want to intrude, so instead, I sat, silently reciting as mantra the final line of the Heart Sutra which you’ve probably heard before: “Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha.” A great explanation of this line is given by Thich Nhat Hanh in this (www.purifymind.com/Heart17. htm) extract from The Heart of Understanding: Commentaries on the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra .

Jade Buddha Statue World Tour By Gary Lau Gary Lau
Jade Buddha
The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is the largest Buddha carved from gemstone quality jade in the world. The Jade Buddha is 2.7 meters high and sits on an alabaster throne of 1.4 high. The Jade Buddha itself weighs around 4 tons and has been valued at $5 million. Its size and beauty make it a wonder of the world. Lama Zopa Rinpoche named the Buddha the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace in the belief that this Buddha will inspire all beings to follow the peaceful path and happiness and help prevent the destruction that is happening so much in the world, including war. After completion in December 2008, the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace embarked on a world tour in 2009 and the tour is expected to last for several years. The purpose of this tour is for everyone, irrespective of their religion, to take a moment to reflect upon peace. I was so glad to be able to see the Jade
B u d d h a at the Bao An Temple in Apopka Vineland Rd, being the first top in the East side of USA. More than a thousand people attended the opening welcome ceremony at 10am on Feb 21st. Commissioner Bill Segal and Ian Green were invited to be the opening speakers. After a week of exhibition in Orlando, the Buddha is now in Tampa, FL till March 14 and then to Sugar Land, Texas, before making its way back to Miami on April 9-18. The tour will continue to the rest of the 16 major cities in U.S. and Canada. In 2011 the Jade Buddha will travel to Germany, England and other European destinations before going back to Asia in 2012. Eventually the Jade
Buddha will go to its home at the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo , Australia where it will be a symbol of peace to inspire the world for millennia to come. Check the Jade Buddha World Tour Dates and locations at http://www.jadebuddha.org.au/en/

Hepatitis B Vaccine and Prevention of Chronic Hepatitis B
If you are a woman and a chronic carrier of hepatitis B and plan to have a baby, the vaccine can prevent transmission to your child if administered at birth and the series is completed according to the recommended schedule. Instead of the usual three vaccination shots, there will be four shots for your baby. Two of these will be given at birth and the other two at one month and six months after birth. The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program at the Orange County Health Department offers education and case management of infants born to infected mothers. For more information about this program, contact Valerie Harvard at 407-858-1400, ext. 1131.
Disease prevention is one of the primary goals of public health and the Orange County Health Department. Chronic hepatitis B is a disease that disproportionately affects Asian Americans, resulting in one of the greatest health disparities in the United States. Infection with the hepatitis B virus can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer. Although 350 million people are infected with the virus worldwide, hepatitis B is one of the easiest preventable diseases through vaccination. In addition to the HPV vaccine, the hepatitis B vaccine is one of only two vaccines available that prevent cancer and it is now recommended for all infants born in the United States. To offer protection, the vaccine must be administered according to the appropriate schedule, usually three injections given over six months. Foreign-born Asians and Pacific Islanders and those born to parents from Asia or the Pacific Islands should get tested for the virus since the disease is common in Asia and Pacific Island countries. These groups have the highest rates of chronic hepatitis B among all racial and ethnic groups in the United States. After receiving a screening test for chronic hepatitis B, a doctor will tell you whether or not you test positive for having the disease, whether you have been exposed and have developed immunity for hepatitis B, or if you are unprotected. If your blood test results are negative and you are unprotected, then you should receive the hepatitis B vaccine series if you are at risk for infection. People at risk for infection include unvaccinated household and sexual contacts of a chronic hepatitis B carrier. If you do not have a doctor, the health department offers free hepatitis screening and vaccinations for at risk individuals. Contact Lori Theisen at 407-858-1400, ext. 1135 to make an appointment.
16 Mar 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
A common misconception is that the hepatitis B vaccine will protect against chronic infection once you are infected. Unfortunately, the vaccine will not help someone who is already infected. Since most Asians and Pacific Islanders are infected at birth from a mother who does not know she is chronically infected, the vaccine administered later in life will not protect against infection. Therefore it is important to get tested to know your status.
If someone in your household has chronic hepatitis B, it is important for you to get tested and vaccinated if you are unprotected. If you have been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B, protect your household members by making sure everyone is tested and vaccinated. Approximately 25%–50% of children infected with hepatitis B between the ages of 1 and 5 years will develop chronic hepatitis. Approximately 6%–10% of people over 5 years of age will develop chronic hepatitis if they are infected. The vaccine can prevent infection at any age.
If you are interested in learning more about hepatitis B, or if you would like a speaker for your group or organization, please contact Jessica Fung at Jessica_fung@doh. state.fl.us or 407-858-1400 X 1351.

Asian Americans DISPUTE Governor’s Census Outreach Decision The Asian American Federation of Florida and its more than 70 organizational members across the State are disputing and strongly protesting against the unfair decision by the Florida Governor’s Office to award a $105,000 government contract to Ron Sachs Communications for promoting the 2010 Census among Asian Americans in Florida, which they claim do not have any ties with this government-favored public relations firm. The award was part of the $2.1 million appropriated by Florida Governor Charlie Crist to develop the most influential grassroots outreach and most effective public relations network possible, as his ongoing effort to ensure that Florida receives its fair share of federal funding and representation. Grassroots organizations and advocates for Florida’s minority and other hardto-count populations were invited to get involved in the 2010 Sunshine Census initiative. “Community leaders throughout our state are needed to ensure every Florida resident is counted during the 2010 Census,” Governor Crist said. Yet, contrary to the Governor’s original intent, the winning bids went mostly to big public relations agencies that have no direct involvement with the targeted communities. The Asian American Federation of Florida, made up of more than seventy Asian American community-based organizations, was established in 1984 to promote and enhance appreciation of the ancestral legacy of Asian Americans in Florida, as well as to address the needs and concerns of Florida’s Asian American communities. To ensure an accurate count of their hard-toreach population, the Asian American Federation of Florida, led by NANAY, hosted Statewide Summits in October 2009 and January 2010 to discuss strategies on how to actively engage their community. More than a hundred events have already been undertaken, and more communitybased programs are still being coordinated by NANAY and the four regional lead organizations of the Asian American Federation to promote
18 Mar 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
Census awareness and participation among Asians in Florida. “Asian issues and Asian Census are best and most effectively handled by Asian grassroots organizations through the Asian American Federation,” says Dr. Joy Bruce, president of both NANAY and the Asian American Federation of Florida. “We do not need any middleman or broker to do it. We should not be reporting to a nonAsian PR firm that will later claim credit for all our community-based outreach efforts.” Ron Sachs Communications used the October Asian Summit hosted by the Federation to support its bid and claimed that it had “already secured as partners” or intended to partner with various Asian business and civic organizations, engaging the group’s leadership to help broadcast the Census message. But most of the Asian organizations mentioned in Ron Sachs proposal categorically denied being part of its initiative. “I just want to clarify that the Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF) and the Chinese School of CAACF have not been approached by Ron Sachs, although our organizations were included on their list,” says Pauline Ho, President of CAACF. The Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, Asian Coalition of Tallahassee, Organization of Chinese Americans-South Florida Chapter, Asian American Heritage Council, Council for Filipino American Organizations (CFAO), Filipino American Coalition of Florida, South Florida Dragon Boat Festival and United Chinese Association of Florida echoed the same sentiment, and had issued statements denying their participation with Ron Sachs. “I just found out that almost all of the organizations Ron Sachs listed in their proposal are identical to (and may have been just copied from) the ones I personally compiled in my web site,” claims Shally Wong of Asia Trend Magazine. Asia Trend Magazine is listed by Ron Sachs Communications as one of the media outlets that they are going to use. I do not recall that they have either called us or approached us for the
outreach. I never heard of this company.” When asked pointblank during the conference call with government officials handling NANAY’s protest, the officer representing Ron Sachs could not identify a single Asian organization that has agreed or committed to become its partner in the Census initiative. The lawyer from Governor’s Office claimed that the Asian American community had no standing or reason to complain. At the teleconference that was intended to resolve the issue, the Governor’s legal counsel predicted that NANAY, the organization representing Asian Americans, would lose the appeal, and suggested that the protest be withdrawn. Still, NANAY and members of the Asian American Federation of Florida are standing firm in their conviction and refuse to withdraw from addressing the issues that impact the Asian community as a whole. “Whether we win the protest or not, we cannot allow anyone to think that the Asian Americans in Florida got counted and united because of Ron Sachs Communications”, says Evelyn Bruce, Executive Director of NANAY. “Most of us were forbidden to speak our mind during the teleconference with Ron Sachs and the Governor’s Office that was supposed to resolve our issue. But Asians are no longer passive. This is a myth that is about to be proven wrong.” “It is not about money,” says Dr. Joy Bruce. “We are fighting for principle. Awarding the bid to a non-Asian public relations corporate agency, instead of a community-based Asian organization that truly represents the target population is another example of the lack of cultural sensitivity for, if not gross discrimination against, this underserved population that the Census is trying to reach. The Governor has good intentions for the Census. Unfortunately, his incentives are not reaching his intended targets.” NANAY and the Asian American Federation of Florida are committed to serving the community, and will continue their efforts to reach out and ensure an accurate count of Asians in Florida.

Japanese Recipe for Success

Take a beautiful college campus, stir in a warm sunny day, add delicious food, mix in entertainment, sprinkle with over 350 delighted participants, and you have a recipe for a very successful Japanese event! On February 20, 2010, the Consulate General of Japan in Miami presented an afternoon of Japanese culture featuring food tasting and a showing of “The Ramen Girl”, a popular movie starring Brittany Murphy as a young woman abandoned in Tokyo by her boyfriend who finds a new purpose to her life by becoming an apprentice to a strict, non-English-speaking ramen chef. The film was shown in the Darden Theater at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management (University of Central Florida). Consul General Yoshiharu Namiki warmly welcomed all of the participants, and Ms. Reiko Nishioka, Director of Education at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, introduced the film and shared her experience as a young ikebana student under a strict master. Consul Koichi Muramatsu was also in attendance at this event. Prior to the film screening, the official chef of the Japanese Consulate, Chef Uemura demonstrated the art of noodle making while Ms. Reiko Nishioka delighted attendees with her commentary about ramen noodles (yes, it is perfectly acceptable to slurp your soup in Japan!) and Japanese food in general. In addition to the ramen noodle soup, attendees also enjoyed fried rice provided by SHOGUN Japanese Steak House. Fried rice is usually served with ramen noodles in Japan. Olympic Opening Ceremonies Pianist, Lang Lang Highlights Festival of Orchestras 09-10 Season Saturday, March 27th 2010 | 8pm Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre Lang Lang, Piano Christoph Eschenbach, Conductor
and the Schleswig Holstein Festival Orchestra The Festival of Orchestras is pleased to announce world-renowned pianist Lang Lang, conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the Schleswig Holstein Festival Orchestra will highlight the 2009-2010 season. Superstars Lang Lang and Eschenbach will be accompanied by the young and talented musicians of the Schleswig Holstein Festival Orchestra, which is comprised of talented musicians all under the age of 27. Featured in this youthful performance is classical music sensation, pianist, Lang Lang. In recent years Lang Lang performed at the opening ceremonies of the Beijing, China Olympics, and in Fall 2008 was named one of the Sexiest Men Alive by People Magazine. With increasing media presence Lang Lang has also been linked to the promotion of the first ever Internet
symphony, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and has even contracted with Adidas for his own customized shoe that may be bought by his many fans. The New York Times has said, “The hottest artist on the Classical Music Planet may well be the Chinese pianist Lang Lang.” Best known for his exaggerated facial expressions and performance behavior, critics dare say these trademarks hinder his playing ability. On contrary these trademarks have brought him world wide fame and popularity as a musician and entertainer for the masses.

Chinese Tourist Celebrating the Year of Tiger in New York Compiled by Asia Trend
the Travel Industry Association. “Travel to each other’s countries is a great way to make friends,” he said to the gathered crowd. “The US, like China, is a very big country, so we hope that you’ll come many times and see many different parts of it.” Consul General Peng Keyu spoke about US-China relations, and the consulate’s diplomatic work. For around a thousand Chinese tourists, New Year’s celebrations were a foreign affair this year. “Thousand Gather in New York” travel party that arrived in more than 20 smaller groups from all over China on the first week of February, some passed New Year’s with little fanfare. Others counted down on a boat cruise around Manhattan. On Feb 16, around half of the group (many were still en route to New York from Orlando and Miami, delayed by wintery weather) gathered at the China Consulate near Times Square to hear remarks by various government officials and industry figures. “Last year over 1 million people traveled from the US to China, and despite H1N1, the number of travelers from China to the US grew to over 600,000. ” Bommarito said. Bruce Bommarito, Chief Operating Officer of
The tourists were eager to see more must-see various landmarks of the city. One of the tourists said the trip would not be enough time to accomplish everything, and were already planning a return trip in the future. Peng Keyu spoke again at a Lunar New Year ceremony at the Empire State Building that evening, during which he pulled a lever to light the tower in red and yellow. The tourists waiting to travel up through the building to see the famous landmark lit up in honor of the Chinese holiday. “The Spring Festival lighting on the Empire State Building is regarded as not only a recognition of the Chinese community’s contribution to the country and society, but also a light illuminating intercultural understanding and respect,” Peng said.
He went on to express hopes that American tourists might visit Shanghai for the World Expo this summer. “We are lighting the Empire State Building red and yellow to spread our wishes for happines and good fortune to everyone this year.” Jean-Yves Ghazi, Director of the Observatory at the Empire State Building said. Peng pointed to the tiger’s connotations of strength and health as an auspicious sign. “The number one thing is mutual understanding. The goal is two peoples getting to know each other, learning about their histories, backgrounds, and customs. This is the most important goal of this trip, to try and promote this better understanding between China and the US.” Peng Keyu said. As early as June 2007, New York City Tourism Convention and Exhibition Bureau has set up its China office in Shanghai, open up the growing Chinese market. In 2009 about 209,000 from mainland China and Hong Kong tourists visiting New York and a survey of travelers against China, most Chinese tourists have to travel abroad in New York as their “dream land” and New York as the first stop to explore the United States. Census Bureau Launches Online Mapping Tool With mail-out of the 2010 Census forms less than one month away, the Census Bureau today unveiled a new online mapping tool (http://2010. census.gov/2010census/take10map/) that allows communities nationwide to prepare for the 2010 Census by seeing how well they did mailing back their 2000 Census forms. Visitors to the new Google-based map will be able to find the 2000 Census mail participation rates for states, counties and cities, as well as smaller areas called “census tracts.” After the 2010 Census forms are mailed out in mid-March, the online map will be updated to include a tracking tool with daily updates of the 2010 Census mail participation rates for local areas across the nation. Users will be able to compare their 2010 Census progress using their 2000 Census rates as a benchmark.
28 Mar 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
“The future of your community starts with a look at its past,” said Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves. “The 2000 Census map allows communities to see which areas need extra attention and reminders to improve mail participation. We will be challenging communities nationwide to take 10 minutes to fill out and mail back their 2010 Census forms next month.” The Census Bureau has also created an online toolkit (http://2010. census.gov/partners/toolkits/toolkits-take10.php) with ideas that communities can use to inspire their residents to improve their mail participation rate. The emphasis on encouraging mail participation in the census is a practical one. For every 1 percent increase in mail response, taxpayers will save an estimated $85 million in federal funds. Those funds would otherwise be required to send census takers to collect census responses in
person from households that don’t mail back the form. After the 2000 Census, the Census Bureau was able to return $305 million in savings to the federal Treasury because mail rates exceeded expectations — a move the Census Bureau would like to repeat in 2010.

Hina-Matsuri
By Teri Mitchell
—Doll Festival (Girls’ Day)
Girls’ Day = Doll Festival is called Hinamatsuri which is celebrated on March 3rd. In old times, people displayed peach blossoms to purify the environment (to get rid of evil spirits) in the peach blossom season. Another custom was that girls floated straw dolls or paper dolls down a river or streams to the sea to purify themselves. Those dolls would carry illness and bad luck away. Later people began to display “Hina-ningyo”, a set of dolls, for the festival. Today, on Hina-matsuri, we celebrate girls’ growth and good health displaying a set of dolls dressed in gorgeous elegant old style Kimono which court ladies wore. The dolls are usually arranged on a five or seven tiered stand. On the top tier, two dolls representing the Emperor (Odairi-sama) and Empress (Ohina-sama) are sitting. On the second tier, there are three ladies-in-waiting(San-nin kanjo), followed by five musicians, two government ministers, and three servants. Sometimes, there are some footmen,
32 Mar 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
as well as some items of daily life, including dressers, carriages, irons, cupboards, etc. The dolls are put away soon after the festival. We have a superstition that keeping them out longer would delay girls’ marriage! The festival itself is more family & home oriented. Families share a meal of Hishi-mochi (diamond-shaped tricolored rice cakes) and Shiro-zake (sweet white Sake). Those Hishi-mochi are colored red (or pink), white, and green. The red (originating from the peach) is for chasing evil spirits away, the white (originating from the snow) is for purity, and the green (originating from the green grass) is for health. The diamond shape stands for a heart (life).

Bridging the Gap
(Reflections of the CAACF 40 Anniversary and Chinese New Year 2010) th
Culinary Diversity At The Heart Of Florida Asian Festival By Bruce Wang Gary Lau
The ballroom was filled with community leaders, social activists, family, and friends. I just witnessed our young Chinese School Dance Troupe elegantly perform for our 300+ guests attending as I prepared to enter the stage. I was so honored, being a student of the Chinese School of CAACF to now the youngest serving board member, to help make a positive impact on my cultural community. It made me realize the trust and care within our organization. The other board members trusted me to coordinate our largest event for the year as well as emcee the 2nd portion of the program. They trusted my judgment and abilities and cared deeply about my growth and maturation to help build the bridge to the next generation of Chinese Americans and agents of diversity. It’s humbling to serve my culture and work with social leaders to build a united community. There has been a brewing disconnect between the traditional founders of the Chinese American Association of Central Florida and the emerging youth group. Celebrating the CAACF’s 40th Anniversary along with the Chinese New Year reaffirmed my appreciation for the resilience and timeless beauty of Chinese Culture. However, Chinese heritage cannot just be preserved it also has to evolve and represent our culture today reflecting new age values. From watching the cultural performances and meeting the audience, I can see these youths are ready and willing to make a difference and take the lead. As the children gather around the stage eagerly waiting for the next performance, I stand off to the side microphone in one hand and program in the other and say to myself, “Let’s make this ours.”

One Brick Orlando Teams up with the CAACF 40th Anniversary Celebration
One Brick is a non-profit volunteer organization that brings volunteers together to support local non-profit organizations. It was founded in 2001 on the premise that volunteering could be fun and easy for busy professionals. By adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event—which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours—we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or café where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting. One Brick now operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, Minneapolis, Seattle and Orlando with a model that has been hugely successful. In 2009, One Brick brought 65,000 hours to the communities it serves. Contact: Bruce Wang 407.310.2180 │ BruceW@onebrick.org www.onebrick.org │ http://orlando.onebrick.org/
