Yo-Yo Ma Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the highest civilian award in the U.S.

“Recognized as one of the world’s greatest musicians, Yo-Yo Ma’s talents know no boundaries of genre or culture,” said President Barack Obama today as he presented Ma with the Medal of Freedom. A total of 15 individuals were honored at the White House ceremony, including America’s 41st President George H.W. Bush, sports legends Bill Russell and Stan Musial, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and investor Warren Buffett. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Yo-Yo Ma is considered the world’s greatest living cellist, recognized as a prodigy since the age of five whose celebrity transcends the world of classical music. Born in Paris, Ma was a child prodigy who went on to study with Leonard Rose in New York. He made his Carnegie Hall debut at age nine. He was the recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize in 1978, and, in 1991, Harvard awarded him an honorary doctorate in music. He serves as Artistic Director of the Silk Road Project, and has won sixteen Grammy awards. He is known especially for his interpretations of Bach and Beethoven, and for his ability to play many different styles of music, including tango and bluegrass. He serves on the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Consul General Gao Yanping Meets With Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado

On February 24, Consul General Gao Yanping, accompanied by Vice Consul Wang Rui, met with and hosted a lunch for Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, City Council members and other government officials in the City of Miami. Consul General Gao extended her spring festival greetings to Mayor Regalado. She made a brief introduction about the latest development of ChinaU.S. relations. Consul General Gao said, the exchanges and cooperation between China and Miami are booming. More and more Chinese trade delegations, entrepreneurs, tourists and students are coming to Miami to do business, travel and study. The local Chinese people have also made great contributions to the economic development of Miami. She hoped that Miami can seize the opportunity to further promote the exchanges and cooperation with China in the areas of trade, culture, education, and etc. Consul General Gao invited Mayor Regalado to visit China. She hoped Mayor Regalado can make efforts to promote the development of long-term healthy and stable China-U.S. relations. Mayor Regalado extended his welcome to Consul General Gao’s visit to Miami. During NCPW, groups nationwide share tips and information that help consumers protect their privacy, manage money and debt, avoid identity theft, and avoid frauds and scams. Unfortunately, this year an estimated 4 million households nationwide are expected to face the risk of foreclosure. Millions of homeowners will try to reduce their mortgage payments with a loan modification. The scammers know this. NANAY-CEDC, a partner of the national Loan Modification Scam Alertcampaign, has 10 tips to help Twin cities homeowners seeking foreclosure prevention assistance this year:
1. Contact your lender first as soon as you get concerned about paying your mortgage.

4. Call NANAY-CEDC, a local HUD-approved counseling agency at 305-981-3232 or ((888) 271-7155 to receive loan modification assistance services for free. Or visit www.LoanScamAlert.org. 5. Meet with a counselor at NANAY-CEDC, where trained counselors are available to provide assistance in English, Spanish, Tagalog and Chinese, upon request. 6. Beware of loan modification scams. Some companies and individuals are out to take advantage of homeowners seeking loan modifications. 7. Avoid anyone who asks for a fee prior to providing any loan modification service, including companies, individuals and even some lawyers. 8. Avoid anyone who guarantees to get your loan modified or stop a foreclosure, because nobody has the power to make this promise. 9. Avoid companies that tell you to stop paying your mortgage and to pay them instead. This is a sure sign of a scam.

Chinese New Year Celebrations in South Florida By Linda Lim

In south Florida, Chinese New Year celebrations were abound for the “Year of the Rabbit” with events taking place in Parkland, Coral Springs, and Kendall. The festivities began on January 29th, with a Gala and Show hosted by CASEC, the Chinese Association of Science, Education and Culture. CASEC, led by Dr. Sifu Zhou, was established in 1994 and has become the largest ChineseAmerican organization in South Florida. One of its principal missions is to promote and preserve the Chinese culture within the United States. This event featured a catered dinner was provided by Dragon Gourmet followed by an impressive ensemble of local and international talent ranging from dance and song to acrobatics and martial arts. Many dignitaries were present including Deputy Consul General Zhang Chuanbing, the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, and the Mayor of West Miami, Cesar Caracasa. On February 5th, the collaborative efforts of the area Chinese Schools brought forth a funfilled day for those who attended. The Coral Springs Cultural Association, Boca Raton Chinese School, Miami Chinese Language School, and Taiwan Business Association of Florida, Inc. sponsored the event which showcased performances by students of the Chinese schools in addition to performances by local groups such as Ronin Taiko and The Shaolin Kung Fu Academy. The event also highlighted the Chinese culture through unique food offerings such as bubble tea and shaved ice as well as many hands-on arts and crafts activities that included origami, paper cutting, and calligraphy. The Chinese schools in Coral Springs, Boca Raton and Miami offer a variety of cultural classes as well as language classes for children and adults. All strive to provide opportunities for those interested in learning more about Chinese culture. In it’s 23rd year, the Chinese Cultural Foundation, Inc. under President Peter Liu’s direction was able to deliver yet another wonderful event which included participants and vendors from all parts of Asia including Taiwan, Korea, and Thailand culminating into one of the largest new year’s celebrations in South Florida. The various food selections were a special treat and many of the local talent from the other New Year’s events participated at this event as well. Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF) celebrated the Lunar New Year at Sonesta Hotel with close to 1,000 guests. The Festival featured many cultural performances, Asian food, and different Asian organizations together with local businesses. “ I am thankful to have the Board of Directors and volunteers such as One Brick Orlando, R.E.A.C.H of Central Florida, Chinese School/ Dance Troupe of CAACF, and Valencia Intercultural Student Association who worked together to make this event a successful one. During the CAACF Lunar New Year Festival, REACH of Central Florida has performed Dragon Dance, Music Ensemble, Kung Fu, Butterfly Lovers Ensemble with Dance and Aerial Silk while some REACH members manned the drink and merchandise booth. Dragon dance was our new try and while practicing, we found out that dragon dance requires a great deal of energy and team efforts. The dance team does mimic the supposed movements of this river spirit in a graceful, undulating manner. REACH members who know kung fu contributed their parts in creating and leading the dragon moves. The movements symbolize the historical roles of dragons which demonstrated power and dignity. For music ensemble, some musicians have to watch music videos on You Tube repetitively for an understanding of the melody and started to rearrange the music ensemble parts. It is amazing to see how REACH members came together with all these performances, by contributing our individual talents. We built friendship and encouraged each other in the process. Tzu Chi Foundation Orlando Division hosted its 2010 Year End Appreciation and Blessing ceremony event for over 150 members and supporters. Shiow Chih Hwang and Bob Lynch kicked off the event and thanked all the volunteers for their continued supports. To promote the theme of this year - “environmental conservation for a better tomorrow”, members of Dragon Legend Acrobatics featured the recycled products on stage. Tzu Chi has encouraged environmental conservation for many years and successfully produced many recycle products for the public. Vegetarian meals were served after the blessing ceremony. The event was ended with a prayer for world peace. Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966 by Venerable Dharma Master Cheng Yen. The Chinese School of CAACF celebrated the Yuan Xiao (Lantern) Festival on Feb 19 with over 150 students, parents, teachers and faculty members. Programs included CAACF Dance Troupe Cultural Dance, Chinese instruments (Guzheng and Pipa) performances, children choir, Chinese Opera and Lantern’s riddle game. In addition, the Chinese School specially prepared yuanxiao - a glutinous rice ball - a must eat dessert which symbolizes family unity, completeness and happiness. Civilization of the Mind During the Stone Age, when humanity was still uncivilized, people lived in caves, ate raw meat, and covered themselves with leaves or animal skins. Then, they discovered the use of fire and progressed in knowledge over the ages. Now, people use gas and electricity to cook, wear the finest clothes, and live in large houses. This is civilization. However, it is only the civilization of our material lives. We still have to develop our minds.
Dreams open the door to idealism. Idealism paves the way to success.
What is civilization of the mind? It is when a person progresses from being rude and impolite to being gentle and kind, from being corrupt and immoral to being humble and grateful, and from being selfish and egocentric to caring for others. That is civilization of the mind. When the mind is filled with compassion, wisdom, and wonderful things, the mind becomes civilized. In other words, spiritual reinforcement and mental progress constitute in civilization of the mind. Human nature is basically good. As the sayings go, “Everyone is basically compassionate,” or, “The original nature of human is kind.” Deep within our minds is a civilized world. Buddhism calls it Buddha Nature. However, our compassionate Buddha Nature has been covered over time with greed, anger, and ignorance and spoiled by materialism and worldly cravings. As a result, we move backwards into the age of barbarism. Often, as our resources increase, our spiritual lives diminish. A country should, therefore, not just pay attention to its material development, but instead, care more about the civilization of the minds of its citizens. Today, the entire world advocates protection of the environment, purification of the mind, cessation of the nuclear arms race, the promotion of cultural exchanges, and peaceful unification. These are all manifestations of the civilization of the mind. Nowadays, we may find harmony, peace, unity, and friendship in our lives as a result of the development of our minds.

Mixi has about 20 million registered users. According to the research company NetRatings Japan Inc., there were an estimated 2.93 million Facebook users in Japan as of last November.

The world’s largest social network, Facebook has achieved remarkable global growth from small beginnings in the United States. Facebook announced that membership had surpassed 500 million last July and, with growth still rapid, it is thought to now be around the 585 million mark. If that is an accurate reflection of the number of individual users, one in ten people on the planet is part of the Facebook network.
Kodama, 33, who was appointed to head Facebook’s new office in Tokyo last year after handling social media at Yahoo Japan Corp., said the service’s lowly status in Japan was about to change. Facebook has begun a partnership in Japan with Recruit Co. Interest has been expressed from companies in a wide range of sectors, including travel, food and shopping.
But despite its global success, Japan has remained oddly resistant to Facebook’s charms.
In contrast to rival social networking services, including Mixi, Facebook is expected to stress the benefits to users of using real names, as well as its huge global network.

The Vietnamese Student Organization at the University of Florida was created to teach their community about the Vietnamese culture through education, service, and cultural performances. VSO hosts two major performances during the school year with the TTT (Tết Trung Thu, MidAutumn Festival) show in the fall and the Tết (Lunar New Year) in the spring. Emcees Joe Barron and Mai Nguyen
Their most recent show occurred on February 5th, 2011 at UF’s Reitz Grand Ballroom. Over 600 audience members celebrated the Lunar New Years with VSO through the theme “Tình Yêu Tình Ngươi”. Different dance styles were shown off with VSO modern’s hip hop mix, VSO traditional’s spring dance, and aKDPhi’s fan dance. Phil Law performed his last VSO shadow dance entitled “Letters” while Chieu Ho debut her fashion line, Choostyle. External VP, Long Nguyen, voices his passion for VSO by saying “For me, VSO isn’t just a way to have fun and hang out with friends, but it allows me develop leadership skills and give back to the community. I hope to ensure that the future VSO will have more members, bigger shows, and a larger impact on the community.” The charity promoted that night was the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. VSO has also contributed hundreds of dollars to charities supported by UNAVSA.

Level Up: A Conference of Personal Growth On Saturday, January 29th, 2011, the Asian Pacific American Coalition at the University of Central Florida hosted its Level up Leadership Conference. Level Up is a one day conference geared towards high school and college students that empowers and inspires them to become leaders in their community. The conference was at University of Central Florida’s Business Administration building and offered three workshops, two guest speakers, and entertainment. Level Up had well over 150 attendees. The workshops rotated three times, allowing students to learn from three influential speakers: Michael Freeman, Mike Mitra, and Dennis Ngin. Michael Freeman’s workshop spoke about stereotypes and examined the role they play in impacting leadership expectations of others and their success. Mike Mitra had a very inspirational and interactive workshop about entrepreneurship. Dennis Ngin’s workshop let attendees work together to solve a puzzle and to teach them about A
leadership. The three workshops aimed to benefit attendees to find the leader in themselves. The two guest speakers are youtube sensation Timothy Delaghetto and UCF Alumni Min Sun Kim. Timothy Delaghetto is a rising youtube comedian and spoke to students about the topic of “Asian Sexuality”. This topic is often shied upon but Timothy delivered in a more approachable and comedic manner. His speaking was followed by a question and answer session and a meet and greet for the fans. Min Sun Kim spoke to everyone about helping the world around us. Her presentation, titled “It’s Not About You” , was about how the power of individuals coming together could make differences in the lives of those around the globe. The entertainment portion of the conference featured Lil Crazed and Micah B. Lil Crazed is a rising youtube musician in the genre of HipHop/R&B. He frequently tops the youtube charts of “Most Viewed (Musicians)”. Micah B. is also B

a musician known for fusing flavor, soul, and witty delivery. These artists performed with much enthusiasm and were excited to see fans lining up to meet them afterward. Overall, the conference’s purpose was to impact young leaders to have their voices heard in their community whether it is amongst their friends, in a school organization, or even throughout their campus. Level Up’s purpose of imposing leadership was for the greater cause that initiation was lacking and that students need to see the issues faced by Asian Americans in today’s society. The Asian Pacific American Coalition at the University of Central Florida wanted to create an event that provided insight on how to deal with those issues and to strengthen the community using the establishment of institutionalized resources and programming that addressed community issues and concerns. Wacky news from the Land of the Rising Sun

~ Edible iPhone ~ Kumiko Kudo, the 44-year-old owner of the Green Gables bakery has been replicating in cake the iconic smartphone ever since a customer asked her to bake a one-off iPod touch cookie for a birthday in October 2008. Although the client wanted to give her husband a cookie in the shape of an iPod, Kumiko isn’t that tech savvy and by accident she made an iPhone instead, but the client was so pleased with the final result that it didn’t matter. Kudo was invited to meet SoftBank President Masayoshi Son and handed him a cookie. SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp. distributes the iPhone in Japan and Son is one of Japan’s leading entrepreneurs. Son had already commented on his Twitter feed how much he wanted an iPhone cookie, and replied “I’m so happy. I cannot possibly eat this.” She can only make 20 iPhone cookies per day, since she meticulously applies icing to the chocolate base that makes up the cookie. This isn’t your typical factory stamped biscuit. The cookies measure 12 cm long and 6 cm wide, a little larger than the actual iPhone, and they’re selling for 2,730 jp yen (roughly $33).

Friends of Koto

When you listen to a traditional Japanese music, there are always alluring sounds of Koto, a Japanese harp and Shamisen, a Japanese three-stringed lute. At annual Orlando Japan Festival, elegant performance by the Koto and Shamisen performers is a contrast to a powerful Taiko drumming. Together, they demonstrate a richness of Japanese heritage and culture, mesmerizing many audiences. There is a community group, called the Friends of Koto /Yoshi-no-Kai offering a lesson and a performance of Koto, Shamisen in Central and South Florida. The Friends of Koto was founded nine years ago by local Japanese residents who wished to preserve and to pass down cultural heritage to their children who live far away from home country. Despite of increased Asian population in Florida during the last decade, Japanese are still very much minority among local Asian community. It takes extra effort and dedication by parents at the grass-roots level to create cultural opportunities for youth. Mrs. Yoshiko Carlton is the founder and one of the instructors of the Friends of Koto/ Yoshi-no-Kai. TheJapanese group name, Yoshi-no-Kai was named after her first name. She has been committing her life to share her Japanese heritage with local community. She is also one of the original member of Southern Florida’s poplar Taiko group, Fushu Daiko. She described the history of the group as followed; “Nine year ago, a group of Koto enthusiasts got together and formed Friends of Koto/Yoshi-no-Kai. Being far away from Japan, we felt responsible to preserve a Japanese traditional culture in Florida for local Japanese community. Also, we wish to introduce beauty of Japan through the Koto music. In our group, we focus on not only ”skill “to play the Koto instrument, but also “respect” and “civility”. The biggest reward for me throughout the last nine years has been collaboration with many people at each performance. We are grateful for many people supporting us in the backstage while we are preoccupied with performance. Please continue supporting our group. We continue to do our best delivering “beauty of Japan” through our performance. “ Ms. Tomoko Kawahara is another instructor of Friends of Koto in the

Central Florida area for last three years. Tomoko began playing koto when she was 4, learning from her grandmother and mother, both renowned koto performers. Tomoko received her B.A. in Japanese Music from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. She won the national koto competition in Japan in 1995, and has performed in concert around the world. In 1998, she released a CD, “Tomoko’s Symbient World.” Beside being a successful performing musician, she also has passion for teaching. She has taught koto at many schools in Japan. Sadly, she is moving from Orlando soon, which adds a special meaning for all students of hers at upcoming recital. She talked about her experience with the group as followed; “I moved to Orlando four years ago and knew very few Japanese people. I was fortunate to meet Yoshiko-sensei through the website referred by my Japanese friend one day. I was touched by dedication and enthusiasm of her and her students, so I offered my service to share my experience with her students in Orlando area. Although we have been performing outdoor at local venues, koto sound is appreciated the best at an indoor stage. At the upcoming recital on April 2nd, we will perform both ensembles and solos. Performers from all over Florida will be there. My younger sister from Japan will also perform as a special guest. I hope that we can share the world of koto with many locals. “ The group offers multi-level lessons for Koto and Shamisen to anyone who wants to learn.
