LINSANITY hits Orlando  By Asia Trend

Jeremy Lin was added onto the NBA All-Star scene at the last minute with overwhelming welcome from local community. Lin played less than 10 minutes in Friday’s All-Star Rising Stars Challenge at Amway Center but his press conference was over sixteen minutes. Fans dressed in Linsanity T-shirts supported him at Rising Stars Challenge at Amway Center and also All-Star Jam Session on Saturady at Convention Center. “Being an Asian American, I have to prove myself more so again and again and some people still may not believe it. But that’s fine as this is something I embrace and I am proud to be Asian American and I love it,” said Jeremy Lin in the NBA press conference. His appearance for Foot Locker at Florida Mall on Saturday attracted hundreds of fans who lined up as early as 7am while he arrived at 12:10pm. Photo Credit: C.K. Lau

From Benchwarmer to NBA All-Star in less than a month, the Linsanity is truly amusing. Lin will play on April 5th at Orlando Amway Center. Get your ticket now!

Spreading Love

from Orlando, FL to Kesennuma, Japan

One Year after the Tsunami

 By Shido Sugimori

Day 1: took the earliest bullet train to Ichinoseki and then drove over hour and half to Kesenuma, after we got settle down to where we are staying, our friend is living in a second house of their cousins, went to Kesennuma elementary to make candy for 6 hours. The kids seems very happy with the event but the older people are not there to enjoy the festivity, many of them are not ready to celebrate. The gym is completely taken by the refugee and the kids can only play outside, one of the elementary got washed out, so the two different school are sharing the building.

went to a kinda garden and pre-k school and made candy for 2 hours and some older kids that was still there came as well. In the afternoon we went to Ashikaga Middle school and made candy for 5 hours. They had traditional taiko (Japanese drum) performance and Bon dance. I thought it was very helpful that the many of the ruffle prize was everyday use product. For example blender, packaged food, mini heater, etc. More than half of the outside court yard was taken by the refegee building. They are lonf portables that cut in to smaller rooms with kitchen so a family can move in. They had big bath house that they made right next to it. We hear that the elder that live in this

Day2: went to Ooshima, which is a little island right next to it, there are still many houses left and the houses closest to the ocean are no good any more because it got wet in the salt water, and the houses that was save are people less because there are no more job available so they cannot stay there any more. We portables get lost, because all the portables are exactly same shape and color, and get scared to go out of the room. Day 3: the last day that we were in Kensenuma, we went to Aiiku En, an orphanage that takes care of children that was neglected, cannot be taken care of, and kids that lost their whole

family at the tsunami. The earthquake happen at 2:15 and the tsunami came 30 min later, many of the family where not together when all of this happen, so many of the children was saved but the elder and the people that lived and worked around the sea side did not have enough time to run. They were about 42 kids from 4 to 18 but there were only 35, it was during like a thanksgiving time in Japan so some of the kids that have family or relative went to visit them. We made candy for 3 hour for all the kids and care giver. They were all very good kids and the older takes care of the younger. They are fed in thought out meal 3 times a day, so many of the younger kids were eager to eat the candy right away, but we told them that we had to wait until ever body gets one and when we did, we took a group picture. And we got driven to Ichinoseki and went back to Tokyo where everything is still there. I was very surprised to see the difference between there the tsunami hit and didn’t. Kensennuma is next to ocean and the mountain, so they have many small hills. When people decided to take car to move and hit traffic, depending where they are stuck their fate was decided. When people grab the rails of the stairs outside and when the big wave hits, there will be less people hanging on the railing. People will try to grab someone feet when they are grabbing on to the rail, both gets pulled to the water. The cars were stuck up against and on top of each other to the walls of mountain and the people who were lucky that was on top were able to survive.

For more events: www.asiatrendmagazine.com/AT_events.html

The Komatsu family that we stayed at there house cousin went through a hell to survive. The two sons that is in middle and elementary school came home and told the mom that the warning for the tsunami is going so since they house was near the middle school the older son came to warn the mom, he left right away and she picked up some stuff and prepared a book bag to get out of the house, but when she got outside the water was coming already. She ran as fast as she can but she could only get to a section where the road split to two way. The water kept coming and it came until her neck. She was freezing in the water and it started to snow, if she got too tired and stopped grabbing the wall, she would be swept away by the strong current of ocean water. Luckily one of the neighbor that survived found her but cannot get her so went in to the mountain where the husband is working, he had no idea what was going on. He went where she is but it is too far away, he called the coast guard and waited until she was rescued. She was in the freezing water for 8 hours if they did not come any sooner, she might have nor survived. Many of the people experienced earthquake before and had tsunami warning in this area, but in this 50 more years nothing happened, so most of the people when they heard the warning, they did not run as fast as they could of. Mr. Komatsu had a little Japanese style hotel called Minshuku Komatsu. He had a big bus and vans to transport to guests, so went her heard the warning he took everyone around him and took the van around as much as he can to save as many lived as he can, he is volunteer hire fighter so he knows how to rescue people. The

last house that he went is a house with old lady that was born and raised there, he talked to her for 15 min but she would not leave the house, she said “If the house is going I am going too, I am not leaving this house he tried as long as he can to convince her but she was determined and so when he saw the water level rising he had to run to his van to save his life. The house was completely gone. And he saw his whole Minshuku right in frond of him just moving away by the strong push from the tsunami, he could not believe it. After he made sure his family is okay, he went around to try to find anyone who he can rescue worked all day, and after dark when he was about to go back where his family is second disaster came. Some of the people that survived without their family and house and people who lived up the mountain is like nothing happen, nothing looks different, some people got crazy and started to put the housed on fire, without thinking about the consequence. Kensennuma job market is 80% related to seafood and to get sea food there are many boats, all the boats are all over and the gasoline station are knocked out by the tsunami, this cause many gasoline in the waves. The fire spread so fast that, it didn’t die down for 2 days. One section of the city is burnt. This could of been prevented... Because Mr. Komatsu is volunteer fire fighter, he was up many night patrolling the city so no more fire. They did this for 2 week straight. To fix the city to where it was will take more than 20 year in this rate. Non of the money of red cross is there and they need the money now. The money that we raised were given to the city council of Kesenuma.

symbol of good luck, fortune and prosperity. The date fell on Super Bowl Sunday, but it also was super in other ways for Central Florida’s Asian American communities and the City of Orlando. Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Sheenhan signed a proclamation declaring the day as the Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival Day. “This event was a dream come true for me. An Asian festival has been something I have always wanted to do. I saw the dragon and lion ceremony when I was first elected over ten years ago. I thought it was something special, and that more people needed to see this wonderful celebration of culture in our community,” Sheehan said in a recent interview.

“The Orlando Police Department estimated that there were over 3,000 people in attendance,” Sheehan said. With Sheehan’s support, organizers Mills 50 Main Street, a thriving, emerging Orlando business district; the Chinese American Association of Central Florida, R.E.A.C.H of Central Florida, an Asian culture non-profit; and Y.E.S.S, a nonprofit working with youth and seniors led the way. Dyer, Sheehan, Demings, Ortiz, more than 50 community groups and businesses, including Universal Studios Resort and Bright House Networks and student volunteers jumped in to produce the Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival. Starting at 11 a.m., parade went down Hill-

crest to North Mills Avenue and through the festival to kick off the celebration. “We were there to represent State Farm and their continued support for the Asian community. I thought the parade was historic for Orlando and exceeded my expectations,” said Christine Vella, a State Farm agent in the Mills 50 district. “It promoted a sense of unity. I was extremely proud of everyone who attended. Not just Asians, but people of all races. I was also happy to see our local community leaders come to participate, too,” said Valerie Boey, Florida chapter president of the Asian American Journalists Association. “I thought the event was absolutely fabulous. The Asian entertainment, food and displays made me feel like I was visiting Chinatown,” Boey said. “It was wonderful! It made me feel like I was among family, seeing so many Asian families.” For others, the event was groundbreaking. “I thought it was an historic event in Orlando’s history, where the Asian American community came to celebrate together the Lunar New Year, one of the biggest holidays in the world,” said Ricky Ly, food writer at www.tastychomps.com. Dragon, lion, folk, fan, silk, mushroom, Indian silver plate, Filipino Tinikling dances, a violin duet, CAACF’s Chinese School Chorus, Tai Chi swords, martial arts, Kung Fu, Taiko drummers, Mei Men exercises and hula hoop acrobats filled the festival’s main stage from noon to 3 p.m. Visitors chowed down on Asian and fair food--Korean

tacos, steamed chicken, rice noodles, Japanese sushi, Vietnamese grilled pork sandwiches, food from Panda Express, burgers, ice cream and funnel cakes. The festival introduced visitors to local businesses and nonprofits. Children made paper dragons. You could also write your name or favorite phrase in Chinese characters, relax with an Asian massage, shop for orchids and bamboo plants or pose for photos with Miss Vietnam Florida, local celebrities or a very tall man dressed as an emperor. “It is due to your collective belief in the vision of this event that led to the success we had on Sunday,” wrote Pauline Ho, CAACF President; Joanne Grant, Mills 50 Executive Director; Agnes Chau, Y.E.S.S. director and Priscilla Leung, R.E.A.C.H. President. “I was humble to be part

of this great team in organizing this event. Besides meeting the Central Florida’s Asian American communities and community leaders, I was extremely glad to meet families from Tampa, Jacksonville and even Miami. I hope this event would be one of them who draw people from other regions to Orlando to celebrate the Lunar New Year,” added Pauline Ho. Academic Pressures –

Asian American Parenting and Conflicts (Part 2) activities, get any grade less than an A, not be the #1 student in every subject except gym and drama, play any instrument other than the piano or violin and not play the piano or violin.” Is it possible that not all Asian kids are capable of straight A’s without being considered lazy? Most Asian parents will not consider this possibility. They do not understand the tremendous pressure that children feel trying to achieve this goal. In fact, the second highest reason for death among Asian American young women, aged 15-24 is suicide, and more American-born Asian American (almost 16% compared to 13% for the general population) contemplate suicide. This may, in part, be due to academic pressure and the daughter’s desires to please her parents.

In January 2012, we talked about how dating can create conflict in the Asian American family. Parents and children also have constant disagreement in the area of academics. Asian parents put a great deal of pressure on their children to get straight A’s out of concern for their future. Asian parents put a high value on financial security which begins with a good education obtaining excellent grades, attending a highly reputable college and securing a lucrative career path. Most children want to have some fun, but this is not a high value for most Asian parents. Amy Chua captured this in the extreme as specified by her rules for her children on the back cover of her infamous book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother with such restrictions as never allowing her children to “attend a sleepover, have a playdate, be in a school play, complain about not being in a school play, watch TV or play computer games, choose their own extracurricular

Adding the spiritual perspective, God does not expect everyone to get straight A’s in all subjects. Jesus shows this in Scripture where He tells us in a parable that the gifts that one servant/person is given is not the same as others. The Parable of Talents (or gifts) shows one person given ten talents, one person five and one person given only one talent. The master wanted each to use the talents given him/her without being afraid. This translates to majors as well – many Asians want their children to have majors which translate into lucrative careers, e.g. doctors, lawyers, engineers, without regard to what the child enjoys or where he/she has a natural talent. This can be frustrating for children who try hard to please their parents. The conflict may be internal, within the child’s heart. The child despises the major and yet compliantly follows the parents’ directives. Later if able, they may get the education they originally wanted or they end up in jobs and careers they hate. On the other hand, the conflict may be ex-

ternal shown in rebellious ways. This includes getting poor grades, partying or being disobedient or disrespectful to parents rather than actually expressing their inability to meet the parents’ unrealistic expectations. Others may attempt suicide or suffer from severe depression. In addition, social media has changed the way children can make friends. Parents do not understand why their teens (and younger) are spending so much time on Facebook or in chat rooms, texting or tweeting. Some Asian children post YouTube videos mocking Asian parents. Social networking creates places for children to vent frustrations, get social needs met and relax. Expecting every child to make straight A’s is a harsh expectation as every child cannot be expected to be excellent in all things. God has a unique place in history (His story) for everyone. Putting forth our best efforts is more important than getting the best grades. This pressure can result in undesirable results. In one county’s top academic high schools, a grade-hacking scheme was noted where some Asian students changed many report card grades. The motives are unknown – it may have been a malicious joke or perhaps a response to parental expectations. As parents, we should not encourage our children to illicit behavior to achieve our goals for them. Let’s make our goals realistic and communicate love to our children not based on the achievement of straight A’s. Integrity, putting forth our best effort, learning from our failures and taking time to show compassion to others is what we need to emphasize. Asian parents are only human – we cannot model perfection and should not expect it from our children, academically or otherwise. A sequel to the “Tiger Parenting” seminars addressing how to raise successful children and other parenting topics will be held at Orlando Chinese Evangelical Christian Church, 2610 S. US 17-92, Casselberry, Florida on April 13 and 20 with programs for the entire family. All are welcome to attend.

Health 健康

One in 10 Asian Americans is living with Chronic Hepatitis B

Chronic hepatitis B is the most common serious liver infection in the world and is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which attacks the liver. An acute (short-term) hepatitis B infection can progress to chronic hepatitis B — a lifetime condition that can lead to cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver, liver cancer, and liver failure. 400 million people worldwide are chronically infected with hepatitis B. “The Truth about Chronic Hepatitis B” seminar was hosted at the Livingstone Community Church on February 25th by Dr. Son Chau to provide some educational information to the general public. 2011 Northeastern Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Victims It has almost been one year since the occurrence of the earthquake and tsunami, which was one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of Japan. Coupled with the nuclear accidents following the Earthquake, it claimed nearly 20,000 lives and displaced over 300,000 people from their homes, schools, and their job sites in Tohoku region. Despite the nation’s continued efforts for recovery, the damages were too far reaching to expect a complete restoration in near future. Unpublicized by the most media, the damages of the Earthquake and Tsunami as well as the nuclear scare affected many Provinces and cities adjacent to the Tohoku region. One of such city is Urayasu city in Chiba Prefecture, located approximately 250 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. Urayasu is a hosting city of Tokyo Disney Land and a sister city of Orlando since 1989. Although there were no casualties from the quake, the city suffered ground liquefaction which is similar to a quicksand, since the majority

of the city was built on landfill. It is anticipated that the repair to the infrastructure of the city will take many years. Urayasu, however, have not received much help due to the priority placed on the Tohoku region where the Tsunami swallowed. One of the organizations extended their support to Urayasu is a local non-profit organization named Japan Association of Orlando, Inc (JAO). JAO is a non-profit, public charity organized as a Section 501(c)(3) organization and is known for hosting “Orlando Japan Festival” for many years. The Festival showcases a wide variety of Japanese performing arts, attractions and vendor booths and has grown to be one of the largest Asian cultural events in the area. In fact, the last year’s Festival held in November generated the attendance exceeding 3,000 people which allowed JAO to donate the net proceed to City of Urayasu. In December, Ms. Takako Johnson, a board member of Mayor’s International Advisory Committee for City of Orlando hand delivered a check from JAO to Mayor Matsuzaki of City of

Urayasu. Joining its efforts with “Strengthen Orlando, Inc,” she has also participated in a fundraising for the city by selling bracelets at the Japan Festival. Aside from the above mentioned, the numerous organizations and individuals in the local Orlando community supported 2011 Japan Festival and its mission to help Northeastern Japan Earthquake/Tsunami victims. JAO and its members are committed to conduct an Annual Orlando Japan Festival to vitalize Japanese art, music, culture, and education through Japan Festival in the Orlando community. The proceeds from the Festival will not only help Earthquake/Tsunami victims, but also to support local organizations and individuals in their endeavors to further the excellence of Japanese visual and performing arts, culture and education. Please contact Takemasa Ishikura, President of JAO at (407) 435-9387 or visit www. jorlando.org for further information regarding JAO and Orlando Japan Festival.  By Asia Trend
