Kicking Off Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month As co-chair of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, I’m honored to bat lead-off in what promises to be an interesting and informative month of blog posts on this site. Today, more than 16 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) make up one of the fastest growing and most diverse populations in the United States. Each of the dozens of distinct AAPI ethnic and language groups has a rich history that contributes to the fabric of our nation. A month-long commemoration of that history may be a relatively recent invention – Congress expanded it from a week-long celebration in 1990 – but May is a fitting month to pay tribute to our saga. It was May 1843 when the first Japanese immigrants came to America, and in May 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was completed with substantial contributions from Chinese immigrants. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to play outsized roles in our nation’s society and economy. According to the newest Census data released just last week, between 2002 and 2007, AAPI-owned businesses increased 40.4 percent to 1.5 million, generating over $500 billion in sales and employing more than 2.8 million people. Many of these companies are small proprietorships, like the grocery store my family owned when I was growing up in Seattle. Small businesses are the engines that drive our economy, accounting for almost two-thirds of all jobs in America. In fact, firms less than five years old accounted for nearly all increased employment in the private sector from 1980 to 2005. This is the power and promise of entrepreneurship, and that’s a power that runs through the AAPI community today. A big part of my job as Commerce Secretary is to smooth the way for that long line of accomplishment to continue.

But we have our work cut out for us. Despite tremendous successes, members of the AAPI business community still face hurdles to accessing federal programs and other assistance, including language barriers and a lack of awareness about the many resources offered by the federal government. Today, many AAPI entrepreneurs need access to resources such as management and technical assistance and small business loans to expand their businesses. Since the earliest days of the Obama administration, we have passed a variety of measures to help AAPI businesses thrive: The Recovery Act enabled 8,000 AAPI-owned businesses to receive over $5 billion worth of new loans. We passed new tax incentives that enable small businesses to deduct the cost of new equipment, new hires and even healthcare coverage. We’ve also focused on educating AAPI firms about government procurement opportunities. Thus far, AAPI businesses have collected over $1 billion in new government contracts and played a major role in our National Export Initiative. And because the AAPI community often has such extensive contacts in foreign countries, we’ve offered significant aid for those interested in export and trade initiatives abroad. We have an opportunity to make a difference in the everyday lives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in our country – and the everyday lives of all Americans. That is what I strive to achieve every day as Commerce Secretary, and I promise this administration will continue this important work into the future. The survey also presents data by geographic area (nation, state, county, city and metro area), industry and size of business. The data cover businesses owned by seven Asian groups — people of Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and other Asian origin. California had the largest number of Asian-owned businesses with 509,097, followed by New York (196,852) and Texas (114,336). Among counties, Los Angeles had the largest number of Asian-owned businesses with 183,092, followed by Queens, N.Y. (68,606) and Orange, Calif. (63,416).

The number of U.S. businesses owned by people of Asian origin increased 40.4 percent to 1.5 million between 2002 and 2007, increasing at more than twice the national rate, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released today. the cultural presentation, the talent performance, and the evening wear question-and-answer section. All of the contestants had a calm, confident air about them that served to highlight their capacity for leadership and grace under pressure. The performances were highly educational, entertaining, and engaging. In fact, the audience was intimately involved throughout the event. It seemed as if each participant had their own block of supporters who would root and cheer for their favorite with outspoken exuberance. The involvement of the audience only served to intensify the jubilant atmosphere of the entire event. There was a wonderful sense of crosscultural acceptance and unity among everyone involved so it appears that ASA has been quite successful in achieving their mission of spreading awareness of the various Asian cultures among the UCF community.

service, and leadership on the campus. They all showed a tremendous sense of camaraderie and unbridled merriment as they completed the various phases of the competition. The three main portions of the pageant were

The student contestants showed such strong leadership qualities and initiative that those who were interested in a career in medicine were offered the opportunity to shadow a cardiologist during rounds and procedures at the hospital and appointments in the office. No matter what future they choose to pursue, these bright young students will undoubtedly be successful adults and strong ambassadors of Asian culture in the larger society. A great deal of credit for this tremendous event belongs to Karen Nguyen who is responsible for creating the pageant 11 years ago. Ms. Nguyen has been in attendance for every pageant since its inception. One could see the joy on her face as she sat in the front row watching over all the participants like a proud mother. The hard work and dedication of Teresa Chan was also quite evident. Teresa is the immediate past president of ASA at UCF and served as advisor to the students participating in the pageant. All of the students performed admirably which is a tribute to her guidance during the preparatory process. Kudos to all the participants and members of ASA at UCF for putting on such a lively and entertaining event!

“Looking back to last year’s pageant, I’d have to say it was all a blur. Everyone was so focused on their lines, their talent, and making sure not to choke. The moment the doors opened, the pressure was on! Last year’s theme was super heroes and my character was bat girl. I represented Vietnam and China in the cultural portion of the show. I messed up my lines but no one noticed since I just kept talking. The next portion was the talent part. I performed the super Mario theme with my brother on the anklung. The anklung is a bamboo instrument from the South East islands of Asia. I learned the instrument from my father who was inspired by the close knit ties between my cousin and her Filipino husband who introduced it to us. The final portion was the evening wear along with the infamous question. The end of pageant consisted of a montage from our practices and the crowning ceremony. I was so happy that all my friends and family were there to support me because without them I wouldn’t have had the confidence to be on stage.” Stephanie Nguyen, Miss ASA 2010

Last year’s pageant was one of the most emotional nights of my life. I don’t remember going through so many emotions in such a short period of time. As the seats filled inside the Pegasus Ballroom I couldn’t help but get more and more anxious for the show to begin, but at the same time extremely nervous because the show was to open with a choreographed dance which wasn’t really my strong suit. After the dance and shaking off the initial jitters, I took a couple of deep breaths and reminded myself why I entered into this pageant, to showcase my culture and to represent my country of Cambodia. I was focused from that point on. I felt so much pride and joy being able to be on stage representing my country, especially during the talent portion of the pageant where I performed a spoken word piece inspired and dedicated to my parents who were both Cambodian refugees who immigrated here in the 80s. The highlight of the night was definitely when I heard my name being called for Mr. ASA. I actually almost broke down in tears when I was kneeling down to be crowned. Asian Awareness Day @ USF Every Spring semester, the sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority Incorporated promote Asian Awareness through hosting forums, presentations and workshops in their respective campuses throughout the nation. This year, on April 4th, sisters at the University of South Florida, decided to showcase their diverse heritages by hosting an event where it highlighted the many festivals celebrated by the chosen countries. The countries that were represented at the said event were Japan, Vietnam, China and the Philippines. To honor the Japanese culture, my very own sisters performed a Taiko, which literally

means “drums”. Village festivals in Japan are not complete without the sound of drumming, as they are one of the sources of inspiration to the people. For Vietnam, a song titled Buc Tam Thu, was sung to promote the Vietnamese heritage. Army wives that support their husbands going to war to fight for their country usually perform this song. To feature the Chinese culture, Mei Hua, a song about a small flower that grows in the winter was also sung. And as for the Philippines, Tinikling, the National Dance of the country, was showcased through a video and a workshop for students. Tinikling is part of various festivals where dancers, through the use of bamboo poles, imitate the movement of Tikling birds as they walk between

grass stems. Food from the respective countries was also served for everyone to enjoy. The event would not have been successful without the supervision of Natalie Waterman, Vice President External, Gloria Wong, Cultural Chair, and the support my sisters received from other student organizations on campus. All the great Asian markets in Orlando are located either near downtown in the Mills Avenue / SR 50 area or on the west side at Pine Hills at the 1st Oriental Market. Although small Asian Markets have existed through out the east side of Orlando for a while now, the newly opened Eastside Asian Market is the largest one to open to date and is a welcomed addition for those living on the east side who need to buy their Asian goods without traveling far. Eastside Asian Market sits just east of the 408 exit on Colonial Drive in a newly built plaza next to the BP gas station. They also operate under the name “Farm Fresh Produce” in the same building and are aptly named so as they have quite the selection of fresh vegetables and fruits both local and out of state. The market is sparkling clean and new, stocked with the essentials of Asian cooking from soy sauces, noodles, rice, dried mushrooms, and more. The even have a large selection of ramen for those of you who are on a tight budget or going to UCF. Though they are not as large as the ones downtown or on the west, their selection should be sufficient for most shopper’s everyday needs.

Eastside Asian Market is owned by a local family here in Orlando who are devout Buddhists and vegetarians. You will notice that they have a large variety of vegetarian items at this Asian market including the veggies and fruits, they have tofu products and “faux” meat items that spice up the typical vegetarian diet.

They also quartered off a section of the market into a cafe with a developing menu specializing in Taiwanese dishes and, all of course, vegetarian. At their cafe, they currently serve boba milk tea, taro slush, flavored black tea (passionfruit, mango, strawberry, lychee), shaved ice, fruit slush, fruit smoothies, special buns, egg rolls, dumplings, egg pancakes, and are still adding items as time goes on. On a recent Friday afternoon, I had the chance to try the famous vegetarian “special buns” (2 for $4.99). The recipe is a secret and has been made by the owner Ronald’s father for over 20 years at home as a treat. The special buns were delicious, spicy flavored slices of tofu and mushroom in sweet “mantou” wheat buns. I also had the deep fried dumplings (6 for $3.95) and they were also vegetarian and pretty delicious, not unlike the korean mandoo dumplings that I have had served in New York. I washed everything down with a nice cool cup of flavored passionfruit black tea.

Flying Walgreens and CHARGE help launching the second dragon boat in Orlando  By Shally Wong Last year, I was one of the audiences to witness the launching of the first dragon boat at Orlando Rowing Club located on the shores of Lake Fairview. I would not know this without the effort of Andrea Eliscu who is the committee of Women Playing For T.I.M.E. and the Dragon Boat Committee Chair. Her willingness to reach out to the Chinese community got the Chinese American Association of Central Florida involved in this sport which is originated in China and now the fastest growing water sport in the world. One year later, the second Dragon Boat arrived in the name of Harriett Lake who funded both of the boats for Women Playing for TIME and Orlando Health Foundation to help breast cancer survivors and raise awareness of breast cancer. The eye-dotting ceremony on April 28th was conducted by Marlin Hutchens, Market Vice President Walgreens who is the 2011 Dragon Boat Festival title sponsor and WPFT philanthropic partner. The first voyage of the dragon boat was led by Coach Grace Genetia and carried out by Walgreens Flying W’s – Walgreens Corporate dragon boat team together with CHARGE, the first Asian dragon boat team.

The Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival

The 9th annual Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival paddled off April 9 in Lake Dora, Tavares. Close to 40 teams, comprised of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerperson, competed in three races for divisional championship. The Tavares Dragon Boat Festival was the first of its kind in Florida, now there are over 13 similar festivals held annually in Florida.

Besides watching competitive races all day long, spectators were entertained by cultural performances such as authentic Chinese acrobatic performances by The Dragon Legend, Taiko drumming by Tampa Taiko, Chinese martial arts and Tai Chi performance by Sifu Sam Winters. Festival also showcased various cultural food and local businesses. Dragon boat racing started in China some 2,500 years ago and is considered one of the emerging sports in the world. East Orlando First Badminton Open Tournament  By Erin Fang

Our first tournament at the South Econ Orlando Magic Recreation Center was a huge success! Many thanks to the Rec Center staff and volunteers who dedicated many hours to prepare, organize, and run the tournament. We believe that the success of this tournament sets the stage for larger regional and possibly national events in the future. The tournament was open to adult players from the south-east region of the US. The tournament attracted 36 participants mainly from Orlando and other Florida communities, such as St. Petersburg, Gainesville, Tampa, and Melbourne. Events were held for Open Men’s Singles; Open Men’s Doubles; Open Women’s Doubles; Open Mixed Doubles; Senior Men’s Singles; Senior Women Doubles; and Senior Mixed Doubles. The tournament was advertised by email to current badminton players, and on local newspaper and television websites. Many of the out of town players commented that the facilities are the finest badminton facilities that they have played at in Florida, and they hope that more tournaments will be hosted here, especially the Sunshine State Games.

Badminton is an up and coming sport in the Orlando area. There are now an estimated 100 active players in the South Econ Center. Although badminton is an Olympic sport and is the second most played sport in the world, until recently there were very limited opportunities to play in the Orlando area. However, it is believed that, as the awareness of badminton programs grow, the level of community participation will also increase. The tournament has already attracted dozens of new players to the South Econ program.

The comments from the tournament participants was unanimous – “the staff and facilities at the South Econ Recreation Center are outstanding in every way!”

It must be noted that the tournament, and the Thursday evening badminton program at the South Econ Gym, has been enthusiastically supported by Penny Fawcett and the staff of the Orange County Parks and Recreation Department. Given the Parks and Recreation mission to “provide and preserve quality…recreation for ALL,” their continuing encouragement and patience has been exemplary, and is essential to the success of the program. And kudos to Air Tran for providing raffle prizes for players, as a way to continue their support to the Orlando community.

He also mentioned the Creative Village project he is working on. This is the former Orlando Arena property that will be redeveloped into a 60 acre urban mixed-use, transit oriented development. In addition to Ustler’s presentation, M&I Senior Vice President Tom Bacchus alsobriefly addressed the audience and spoke about the future plans for M&I Bank which include a name change to BMO Harris Bank due to a merger with the Bank of Montreal. On March 19th, at Lake Highland Preparatory School, Mr. Harris Rosen (the Honorary Consul General of Japan in Orlando since last year) attended the graduation ceremony of the elementary school division of Orlando Hoshuko to encourage the families of who have been shaken by the tragedy (in Japan) of March 11th. There were about 100 Hoshuko students, teachers and parents in attendance. In his speech, he talked about how his business went downhill after the attacks of September 11, but he was able to get back on track because of his faith. Likewise, he inspired everyone that if they keep their faith, Japan will be able to stand back up. The six students graduating in this ceremony each shared their goals and dreams. Mr. Rosen inspired the graduates and all the families of Hoshuko to a new start.

TDL and TDS are back up to Disney fans

Tokyo Disneyland (Urayasu, Chiba) reopened its gate on April 15th for the first time since the country’s strongest earthquake (on record) struck. More than 10,000 Disney fans lined up before the park was scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Damage to the resort was mostly to the parking lot because the amusement park grounds boast reinforced foundations. Nearly all other structures at the 28-year-old park avoided serious damage. Closing time was moved up four hours to 6 p.m. in an effort by officials to conserve electrical power. Many parts of the disaster area were still without power. Oriental Land, the owner and operator of Tokyo Disneyland, is donating ￥300 (roughly $3.60) per admission as a general relief fund to Japanese Red Cross through May 14th. Also, Tokyo Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Ambassador Hotel are donating ￥1,000 per room per night as well. The commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency, Hiroshi Mizohata, called the park’s reopening an “upbeat message to the world”. Now, the TDL is back to normal park hours andTokyo Disney Resorts facilities have recovered and are open again. On April 28th, at 9 a.m., Tokyo Disney Sea reopened. Mickey, Minnie and other Disney characters welcomed about 3,000 visitors at the gate. In the same policy as at TDL, TDS is operating with fountains off throughout the park with reduced lighting at the restaurants and shops to conserve power.

World’s Most Expensive Residence in India  Compiled by Linda Lim

Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India and fifth richest man in the World, now holds the record for owning the World’s Most Expensive House. It stands 570 feet tall in the heart of South Mumbai and contains 27 floors. Residents include Ambani and his wife,Nita and their three children, and Ambani’s mother. There is a reported staff of 600 to maintain the premises which includes a ballroom, theatre, gym, garden floors, and multiple pools not to mention the helipads and parking floors to garage about 170 cars. The inspiration for the design came from Nita’s visit to the spa at the Mandarin Oriental New York. The couple consulted with the designers behind the Mandarin, Perkins and Will and Hirsch Bedner Associates who then drew up the design for The Antilla, named after the mythical island. The design conforms to Vaastu, an Indian tradition not unlike the concepts of feng shui, and each floor also incorporates the use of different architectural making each one unique. The final cost for the Antilla is a reported $2 billion.

Led and sponsored by a local group of Japanese nationals and former residents of the country, a fund-raising event titled “Ganbare Nippon” (Stay Strong Japan) has been organized to focus on humanity and the needs of the Japanese people in the face of this overwhelming natural disaster. “As members of the global community, Full Sail University is proud to host the Stay Strong Japan benefit on our campus,” said Garry Jones, President of Full Sail University. “Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by these recent and devastating events and we are honored to host an evening that will help to raise awareness, while celebrating the strength and culture of Japan.”

During the two-week New Year celebration, incense is burned in Cai Shen’s temple (especially on the fifth day of the first lunar month), and friends joyously exchange the traditional New Year greeting “May you become rich” (“Gongxi facai”).
