ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH, 2012 ------BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION Generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have helped make America what it is today. Their histories recall bitter hardships and proud accomplishments -- from the laborers who connected our coasts one-and-a-half centuries ago, to the patriots who fought overseas while their families were interned at home, from those who endured the harsh conditions of Angel Island, to the innovators and entrepreneurs who are driving our Nation’s economic growth in Silicon Valley and beyond. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month offers us an opportunity to celebrate the vast contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our Nation, reflect on the challenges still faced by AAPI communities, and recommit to making the American dream a reality for all. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders comprise many ethnicities and languages, and their myriad achievements embody the American experience. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have started businesses, including some of our Nation’s most successful and dynamic enterprises. AAPI men and women are leaders in every aspect of American life -- in government and industry, science and medicine, the arts and our Armed Forces, education and sports. Yet, while we celebrate these successes, we must remember that too often Asian American and Pacific Islanders face significant adversity. Many AAPI communities continue to fight prejudice and struggle to overcome disparities in education, employment, housing, and health care. My Administration remains committed to addressing these unique challenges. Through the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we are working to expand opportunities for AAPI communities by improving access to Federal programs where Asian American and Pacific Islanders are currently underserved. As we also take this occasion to reflect on our past, we mark 70 years since the Executive Order that authorized the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Last month, I announced my intent to posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- the country’s highest civilian honor -- to Gordon Hirabayashi, who openly defied this forced relocation, and bravely took his challenge all the way to the United States Supreme Court. This year, we also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese cherry blossom trees planted in Washington, D.C., an enduring symbol of the friendship shared between the United States and Japan and a reminder of America’s standing as a Pacific nation. Over the centuries, we have maintained a long, rich history of engagement in the Asia-Pacific region, and our AAPI communities have been essential to strengthening the economic, political, and social bonds we share with our partners around the world. This month, we reflect on the indelible ways AAPI communities have shaped our national life. As we celebrate centuries of trial and triumph, let us rededicate ourselves to making our Nation a place that welcomes the contributions of all people, all colors, and all creeds, and ensures the American dream is within reach for all who seek it. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The 10th annual
Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival Dragon Boat races are traditionally held as part of the annual Duanwu Festival on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar (also known as double fifth) in Asia. In the United States, dragon boat races are no longer primarily for the festival. You do not need to wait till summer to have the race. In Florida, the dragon boat racing starts as early as March and lasts till late October. Dragon Boat racing is now one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. No wonder many out-of-state and Canadian teams
rush to Florida for all these races. The Tavares Dragon Boat Festival was the first of its kind in Florida and has been a pioneer for a decade. Teams are comprised of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steerperson. The drummer leads the paddlers throughout a race using the rhythmic drum beat to indicate the frequency and synchronicity of all the paddlers’ strokes. The paddlers are ranging from the age of 14 to the age of 80. It indicates that this water sport can be enjoyed by all ages. As long as you can follow

Global Power City Index The Global Power City Index provides a ranking of the urban competitiveness of 35 world cities based on their international “attractive.” This trait is defined as a city’s “comprehensive power to attract creative people and excellent companies from around the world amidst accelerated interurban competition.” While New York, London, Paris and Tokyo top the latest version of the Global Power City Index by a healthy margin, other prominent Asian cities, such as Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong, perform well in a number of specific areas.
Tokyo’s Narita Airport has bolstered Tokyo’s Accessibility rating relative to other major Asian cities. In the short-term, the global economic downturn has helped Tokyo’s ranking for the Economy function.
Power Asian Cities The overall rankings of the report’s “major cities of Asia” – Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Osaka – rose across the board. Beijing “leapt” a healthy six spots from No. 24
to No. 18. For the Economy function, Beijing ranks a strong third with 55.0 points, just half a point back of second place New York and slightly further ahead of fourth place London. Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai take spots five, six and eight, respectively, with scores of 43.3 to 45.4. The table below presents the overall and function-specific scores and rankings for several of the major Asian cities in the index.
Global Power City - Tokyo The report highlights Tokyo’s stature and competitiveness as a leading global power city. In addition to its high overall ranking, Tokyo ranks among the top five cities in five out of six function-specific areas. The report identifies a number of more specific factors in Tokyo’s overall and functionspecific rankings. Reducing travel times from
Handless Girl Wins Penmanship Award A Pennsylvania first-grader who doesn’t have hands won a trophy and $1,000 in a penmanship competition. On April 18, Annie Clark, 7, became the first recipient of the Nicholas Maxim Award, a prize from educational publisher Zaner-Bloser Inc. that recognizes disabled students with exceptional handwriting. Annie, who writes by wedging a pencil between her two arms, accepted the award from the basketball court at Wilson Christian Academy. She was cheered on by students and faculty as she wore all yellow in honor of the school’s colors.

“Annie has always been very, very determined, very self-sufficient in dressing herself and feeding herself,” her dad Tom told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “She can ride a bike. She swims. The final round of the 2012 Miami Competition was played to a near-capacity crowd on Friday evening, March 2nd. Enthusiastic applause rang through the sanctuary at Church of the Epiphany in Miami as the contestants put the three-manual, 61-rank Ruffatti organ through its paces. Finalists Anne Lam, Paweł Wróbel, and Weicheng Zhao each played a 25-minute program. “Tewassa” means “Hand-crafted” or “Playing with hands” in Fukushima prefecture dialect. Local Japanese residents who want to support survivors of 3/11/11 East Japan Great Earthquake in long term with hand-made items created the group, Tewassa. The group was founded in Boston, MA following the earthquake in March, 2011. The group has been successfully operating and expanding activity throughout Boston area. They have created a strong network with survivors in Japan. The leader of this volunteer group, Ms. Etsuko Yashiro happened to be one of my personal old friends. One day, I received a phone call from her and she invited me to join Tewassa move-

ment by starting Orlando branch group. It was around the first anniversary of disaster and my friends and I were searching for good project to support survivors. After one year, we need to find the way to provide them with more concrete items on their “wish-list” beside sending monetary donation. I took initiation to start the group here in Orlando with collaboration from Ms. Miyuki Sugimori, a candy artist and Ms. Izumi Sakurada who has been actively involved in volunteer activities.

Miyuki visited Kesennuma city, Miyagi prefecture last summer and has established a strong network with survivors and local reconstruction group. We decided the first destination of our project would be Kesennuma. We asked participants at supporting party to write personal mes-

On April 3rd, Miyuki Sugimori and local supporters or reconstruction of Northern Japan Earthquake/Tsunami in Kesennuma gathered at Aki Japanese Restaurant in Orlando. It was heartfelt and fun event. About fifty supporters from the age 2 and up came to hear Miyuki and her daughter Shido Sugimori’s report of their trip to Kesennuma Summer Festival in August, 2011. They shared their experience with the slide show created by one of survivors, Mr. Yoshihito Komatsu in Kesennuma city, Miyagi, Japan. Highlight of the evening was to interview with Mr. Kazuo Miyai, one of survivor in Kesennuma city over live phone call. He is a leader of Kesennuma city’s youth group to rebuild town. He shared current situation among survivors. He asked for sustaining moral support. Plenty of supporting goods and monetary donation have been poured in. However, distribution is sluggish and some survivors are becoming dependent and needy. He pointed out negative economical effect in local business due to overstocked donated items. His true-to-life report was eye-opening to attendants and brought up a challenge in the way of support from remote area like Orlando. Another highlight of the evening was new long-term supporting project from Orlando, Tewassa- hand quilted messages which initiated by Mrs. Hitomi Silverstein. All attendants par-
ticipated to create a personal message cloth to be patched into two pillows which will be sent to Kesennuma. This project focuses on specific individual survivors to support providing their wishlist item in long term. The first one chosen is Mr. Komatsu. Mr. Komatsu is older brother of Miyuki’s longtime friend, Ritsuko Robinson. He accompanied Miyuki and her daughter during their trip to Kesennuma and they became a good friend as well. He used to manage the “Minshuku”, bed and breakfast inn by the bay of Kesennuma. It was family business of three generations, however, massive tsunami on March 11th, 2011 engulfed his inn and house and left him with nothing. Luckily, his family survived. In aftermath, local survivors who also lost everything and many relatives had huddled to survived day by day sharing foods and basic necessity. As a local business owner, he took leadership to offer gathering place. Instead of giving up and relocate, he decided to remain in his town and rebuild his business. Instead of the inn, he decided to rebuild a community cafe restaurant where people can have tea, simple meal and use the space for multipurpose event. It was unimaginable effort to get financial loan to rebuild business at ground zero without immediate prosperity, but he cleared hurdles one by one and came to build “Banya- Minkoma”. “Banya” is a community gathering spot in Japanese. It was

established in Edo era as a place where local volunteer firemen or policemen stationed to keep their neighborhood safe. Mr. Komatsu wanted to name his new cafe with “community” in mind. “Minkoma” was named after “Minshuku Komatsu” - Inn Komatsu, his former business. On April 11th, he had a grand opening and many people showed up to celebrate his new beginning. NHK News and TBS Television also covered his footage of rebuilding. Mr. Komatsu’s one of current wish-list is tea and coffee. He serves them free to customers. The first package of donated tea, coffee along with hand quilted pillow with messages from local supporters will be shipped to him soon. Ms. Sugimori continues fundraise through her candy art at various venues. She wrote in her personal blog (http://yaplog.jp/candymiyuki/archive/1299) that “Yorisou kimochi” meaning empathy to “standing by” survivors is the most important thing in support. She was the initiator of Orlando Kesennuma supporting project, but she wishes that many will join her to keep awareness. She will be at upcoming Asian Cultural Festival on May 12th at Avalon Park at the Asia Trend Magazine booth to demonstrate her candy art for fundraise. Venerable Master Hsing Yun:

Venerable Master Hsing Yun was born in Chiangsu Province, China in 1928. He entered a monastery near Nanjing at age twelve. He was fully ordained in 1941, and is the 48th patriarch of the Lin-chi (Rinzai) Ch’an School. In 1949, amid the turbulance of civil war, he went to Taiwan. For nearly a half century, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has devoted his efforts to transforming this world through the practice of Humanistic Buddhism, which takes to heart the spiritual practice in daily life. The emphasis is on not needing to “go some place else” to find enlightenment, and believing that we can realize our true nature in the here and now, within this precious human birth and this world. When we actualize altruism, joyfulness, and universality, we are practicing the fundamental concepts of Humanistic Buddhism. When we give faith, hope, joy, and service, we are helping all beings, as well as ourselves.
Fo Guang Shan Ve n e r a b l e Master Hsing Yun founded Fo Guang Shan (Chinese translation meaning, Buddha’s Light Mountain) in 1967. Since then it has evolved from a mountaintop bamboo forest to the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. Presently Fo Guang Shan has over 200 branch temples throughout the world, carrying out the goals of propagating Humanistic Buddhism, and establishing a Pure Land on Earth. Its mission is to propagate Buddhist teachings through cultural activities, nurture talents through education, benefit societies through charitable programs, and to purify human hearts and minds through Buddhist practices.
Guang Ming Temple The Guang Ming Temple was founded in 1992. It is one of the branch temples from Fo Guang Shan. Located in the beautiful city of Orlando, Florida, Guang Ming Temple is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Central Florida. In Mandarin Chinese, “Guang-Ming” means bright light. The temple features a main shrine, meditation hall, memorial complex, tea room, vegetarian dining hall, library, gift shop, classrooms, and
more. The temple provides multicultural education, serves as a center for social functions and festival activities, and most importantly, through this, the Buddha’s teachings can be made available to benefit society through community outreach programs, and enhance the spiritual growth of Buddhist devotees through their everyday actions and pilgrimages. Guang Ming temple holds service every Sunday from 10:30am to 12:30pm. They also hold regular activities such as Buddhism discussion groups & study classes, meditation classes, and Chinese cultural classes. Teaching Abroad

a different side of Korean culture that you can’t get by travelling to the country. I learned a lot of the customs and traditions that every Korean does like second nature. I also took some time to learn the language. Although my ability is far from fluent, it’s leaps ahead of where I began, which was essentially nothing more than the two words 바보(idiot) and 사랑해(I love you). On the flipside, I was blessed with ample vacation time. So I took this opportunity to travel outside of Korea and see what else the world had in store for the curious mind. I’ve gotten to see so many new places and meet some wonderful people along the way, that it makes me wonder why people are perfectly content with never leaving their own town (not to offend anyone). The best part about my experience, though, was having an impact on someone’s life. It
For the past 2 years, I have been living and teaching English in Korea. But you should know that I’m not Korean and had no previous experience with living in another country. Why should you care? A lot of people I know were always curious about my experience living abroad and adjusting to a totally different culture. This is my response to these people. Back in 2010, I was a proud graduate of UCF, but despite graduating, I felt like I still needed to do something meaningful with my life and experience something new. Like a lot of people during that time, the job market was not exactly primed for new graduates to charge into. During my days in volunteering at my university’s language center, I came to meet many international exchange students. Through my experiences with them, I was introduced to the idea of teaching English abroad. Since I was a graduate without a firm future, let alone a job, I saw this as an opportunity to travel abroad while making money. Sounds like a good thing, right? It became much more than that, though. I applied to EPIK (English Program in Korea), a Korean government funded program

to invite native speakers of English from English speaking countries to help teach English in the Korean public school system. I went through the long process and finally came to Korea, with just a suitcase and duffle bag. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I attended a short orientation to familiarize myself with Korean culture and teaching English, but after that, I was thrown into the fire. My very first class… terrible. The kids were crazy and I was unable to control the situation. It was nothing like they said it would be. Thankfully, it was just one class. But this experience made me realize that I needed to adapt in this new environment in order to survive. As time passed, I eventually got the hang of things and soon enough, I was in love with teaching and life in general.
brought meaning and purpose to what I did. Students may not learn more than “Hello Teacher.” and “Thank you, Winfield teacher.” but their impression of English, and of foreigners, was impacted by me. Young minds are easily molded and I had a chance to have a positive influence on them. On my last day of teaching class, I told them that I wouldn’t be their English teacher next year. A student came up to my crying and said, “You are the best teacher. Please don’t leave our school.” I will never forget these words.

Taiwan’s EVA Airways launched the Hello Kitty Jet servicing routes from Taiwan to Japan in 2011.
Magic Jet flies to Sapporo and Guam. Apple Jet flies to Seoul and Fukuoka. Global Jet serves Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The two companies launched the first generation of Hello Kitty jets in 2005. That Kitty fleet was disbanded in 2009, after its licensing agreement expired.
The Hello Kitty journey starts with Hello Kitty boarding passes and baggage stickers. Then passengers make their way to a youcan’t-miss-it gate dedicated to the Hello Kitty flyer.
The new Taipei-based Hello Kitty jets -- called Apple Jet, Global Jet and Magic Jet -- will operate for at least a year on different routes originating from Taipei.

Nihon: Reflections of a Classic Culture By Pete Campbell
From 6 - 9 pm on the first Thursday of each month, the Orlando Museum of Art showcases a new theme with works by local artists, live music, cash bars serving wine, beer and soft drinks, and café offerings from area restaurants. The April theme was “Nihon: Reflections of a Classic Culture - An exploration of various Japanese themed arts from ancient to modern.” Approximately 400 people attended the event showcasing the work of local artists, martial arts demonstrations, koto and traditional dance performance, and kimono display. Ran Getsu of Maitland provided a variety of popular foods for guests to enjoy.

According to Rie Campbell of Yayoi Kimono and Accessories- “the event itself came together rather quickly and it’s success was due in large part by everyone’s willingness and desire to share their various arts and culture with others.”
According to event organizer Nick Bingham, the event was a big success for the museum. In addition to raising awareness for local artists, the 1st Thursday program is an opportunity for the museum to increase it’s membership and reach out to Orlando’s diverse population.
Izumi Sakurada and her daughter Yuni demonstrated origami- paper craft and did fundraising for Kesennuma city, Japan. As a special treat, Ms. Miyuki Sugimori’s traditional Japanese hand sculpted candies were given to all donors. They displayed video footage of the recovery efforts of Kesennuma city created by Mr. Komatsu, a survivor of earthquake and tsunami in last March. In all, a total of $186.86 was raised and all money will go towards the support project for Kesennuma.

were also performances of traditional Japanese dance by Satomi Hirano. There were also martial arts demonstrations going on continuously on the museum stage. In all, members of three dojo’s (school’s) performed a wide variety of Japanese martial arts. Students of Sensei Bob Elder and the Orlando Toyama-ryu Batto-do Dojo performed their style of Japanese swordsmanship known as Toyama-ryu. Also on hand was Sensei Doug Clark of the Metro Orlando Judo Kai and some of his students, along with visiting Sensei Takahide Haraguchi from Japan demonstrated a variety of Judo techniques. Karate demonstrations were provided by Sensei Abu Haider and students from the Rising Sun Dojo, along with a demonstration of Aikido by Sensei Eddie Alicea. Also from the Rising Sun Dojo were Shibucho Pete Campbell and students from the Mukushin-ryu Bujutsu class, also demonstrating japanese swordsmanship (iai-justu/ ken-jutsu) and han-jo (half-staff) techniques.

I have planned to travel to India for a long time. When I told my friend my trip to India by joining a tour group, they all warned me the high possibility of getting sickness which sounds a little frustrated. However, I just cannot resist the greatness of Taj Mahal and the attractive description of Kashmir. Finally, I made up my mind and joined a Hong Kong tour and started my first trip to Inida. Of course, I did not get any sickness after all and I enjoyed the entire trip very much.

Srinagar is the summer seasonal capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the largest cities in India not to have a Hindu majority. The city is famous for its gardens, lakes and houseboats. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. We stayed at a houseboat by Dal Lake with a butler who took care of our breakfast, lunch and dinner. Does it sound wonderful? The truth was that your butler only offered you some kind of basic cooking of local food and you had to tell yourself you can adapt yourself really well. I would sacrifice my diet for the wonder-

at Valencia Community College East Campus On March 15, 2012 Sifu Charles Rivera and his students along with a couple of special guests were invited to the annual Chinese Festival at Valencia Community College East Campus. It was the third straight year that Sifu Charles has been invited to lead the festival put on by the International Students Group and their coordinator Ms. Lori Sunday. The festival’s purpose is to raise awareness of the Chinese culture. This year’s event was memorable because 2012 is the year of the water dragon. The public sampled delicious Chinese cuisine. Numerous booths were set up to educate the public on all things Chinese like how to eat with chop sticks, Chinese zodiacs, and Chinese calligraphy. When the gong rang out 12 times everyone ate a dumpling. Sifu Charles and his students then treated students and facility to exciting performances of

traditional Chinese lion dance and kung fu/tai chi. Special guests Sifu Sam Winters and Instructor Alan Trueba wowed the crowd with their spectacular performances as well. The Valencia students were invited to participate in a group tai chi form led by Sifu Charles. There were plenty of smiles and cheers as the dragon made its way around the campus. Finally Sifu Charles presented a dragon to Ms. Sunday and the International Students as a token of his gratitude for having the opportunity to be part of the special festival! “What a wonderful performance you and your team did at the Chinese Festival! I enjoyed the dances and performances and would like more information about classes.” Sifu Charles Rivera has been studying and training in traditional Chinese martial arts for over 30 years and runs the Hung Fut Hung Man Fei Martial Arts Dragon and Lion Dance Association. He has dedicated himself to promoting the teachings and traditions of Hung Fut Chinese kung fu, dragon dancing, and lion dancing. Classes are offered to children and adults. Sifu Charles and his students have been invited to perform at many major events such as grand openings, weddings, new years celebrations, ribbon cutting ceremonies, and sporting events.
