THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release

April 30, 2013

ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH, 2013 ------BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION Each May, our Nation comes together to recount the ways Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) helped forge our country. We remember a time 170 years ago, when Japanese immigrants first set foot on American shores and opened a path for millions more. We remember 1869, when Chinese workers laid the final ties of the transcontinental railroad after years of backbreaking labor. And we remember Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made our country bigger and brighter again and again, from Native Hawaiians to the generations of striving immigrants who shaped our history -- reaching and sweating and scraping to give their children something more. Their story is the American story, and this month, we honor them all. For many in the AAPI community, that story is one also marked by lasting inequality and bitter wrongs. Immigrants seeking a better life were often excluded, subject to quotas, or denied citizenship because of their race. Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders endured decades of persecution and broken promises. Japanese Americans suffered profoundly under internment during World War II, even as their loved ones fought bravely abroad. And in the last decade, South Asian Americans -- particularly those who are Muslim, Hindu, or Sikh -- have too often faced senseless violence and suspicion due only to the color of their skin or the tenets of their faith. This year, we recognize the 25th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 and the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act’s repeal -- milestones that helped mend deep wounds of systemic discrimination. And with irrepressible determination and optimism, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have prevailed over adversity and risen to the top of their fields -- from medicine to business to the bench. But even now, too many hardworking AAPI families face disparities in health care, education, and employment that keep them from getting ahead. My Administration remains committed to addressing those disparities. Through the White House Initiative on AAPIs, we are working to ensure equal access to Federal programs that meet the diverse needs of AAPI communities. We are standing up for civil rights, economic opportunity, and better outcomes in health and education. We are fighting for commonsense immigration reform so America can continue to be a magnet for the best and brightest from all around the world, including Asia and the Pacific. Meeting those challenges will not be easy. But the history of the AAPI community shows us how with hope and resolve, we can overcome the problems we face. We can reaffirm our legacy as a Nation where all things are possible for all people. So this month, as we recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are fulfilling that promise in every corner of our country, let us recommit to giving our children and grandchildren the same opportunity in the years ahead. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2013 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to visit www.WhiteHouse.gov/AAPI and www.AsianPacificHeritage. gov to learn more about the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh. BARACK OBAMA ###

Let’s celebrate

the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month together! May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as

Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law. Communities celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans with community festivals, government-sponsored activities and educational activities for students. Visit http://www.asiatrend.org/calendar-of-events. html for a list of events.

{Community} The unveiling of the Vietnam War Memorial in Baldwin Park for the Vietnamese community

The City of Orlando declared April 27th 2013 to be the Official Vietnam Memorial Dedication. Remembering those who served, sacrificed, and survived.

Black April Commemoration in Central Florida

 By Minh Nguyen

April 30th: Black April. Part of the thousands who know the darkness of this day’s shadow best is none other than my own family. It was this night in ‘75 that my mom was woken up in the middle of the night to hide under a dug-out tunnel, for fear of being captured, executed, or maybe even worse. She escaped the tunnel to face the fact that my late grandfather--Nguyen Van Thau, Republic of Vietnam Army Force Lieutenant, may he rest in peace--was imprisoned by the Communist while the rest of the family escaped and returned home with thoroughly empty hands. That marked the point when my mom’s childhood ended at the age of just 9, because from that day on, she single handed took care of three younger sisters day in & day out in between four walls made of dried palm leaves with a hole in the ground for a toilet

and a paper box for shelves, as my grandmother (once a lady of pearls and silk) toiled in the market to make enough money to rebuild. And rebuilt, they did, because they went from that bleak darkness to where they are today, providing me with this perfectly beautiful life in which I couldn’t ask for anything more. 58,220 US members and 3 million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were lost to this war. I’ve met American veterans who were crippled and scarred, physically, emotionally, and mentally; yet still they could tell me about the golden rice paddies and the stunning áo dài. It was an honor for me to witness the unveiling of the Vietnam War Memorial (one of only three in the country!) in Lake Baldwin Park this past weekend. It was the result of 7 years of hard work from VCCF, and a representation of the millions

of lives sacrificed along with a country lost. But we’ve NOT lost, because the Republic of Vietnam does live forever on in the hearts of those mentioned above: the families who will relay the stories to my generation and future generations who will carry on the legacy, by the Veterans who continue to see Vietnam for it’s intrinsic beauty that will endure, and by these memorial structures, made from sweat and tears to honor those who have shed blood and tears.

Miss Vietnam Florida Pageant representing at the Vietnam War Memorial Dedication. It has been quite a journey for the Vietnamese Community of Central Florida. With 3 years of discussion/planning and 7 years of fundraising and development in action -- the monument is finally complete. It truly is a dream come true for all the Vietnamese communities in Florida.

The UCF Vietnamese American Student Association hosted the 38th anniversary of the Commemorating Fall of Saigon on April 17th 2013.

Mills 50 Main Street is made possible through the interest, efforts and generosity of The National Trust Main Street Center, the City of Orlando as well as our many members and volunteers. Visit www. mills50.org for more information.

Orlando’s Main Streets are Home to Some of the City’s Hottest Artists For the past few years, a creative movement has been building in Orlando. Many artists and creative professionals find the Main Street districts a perfect place to practice their craft. No where is that more evident than in Mills 50! Mills 50 district was the first district to undertake the Art Box Project and now, twenty eight (28) metal utility cabinets have been transformed into pieces of art by artists who live and/or work in Mills 50! Four other Main Street districts have undertaken this project, upon seeing the success of ours! Now, it is time for the rest of the City to understand the unique perspective that each Main Street offers. Picturing Main Street will do just that! Picturing Main Street is an art event designed to highlight why our districts are thriving hubs of creative culture. Tampa PhilFest 2013 What began as a two hour drive, ended up to becoming a bit of soul searching to find what my cultural identity means to me and how it is going to evolve as we reach the future. Some things come automatic, brushing teeth, bathing, breathing and eating. Sometimes we don’t get to savor a taste of the promising versatility that culture gives us. I have been to the Tampa Filipino festival before. I have tasted the variety of food; watching and participating in cultural activities such as Tinikling and the warrior dance. history. It’s not just what they cook, how they dance, what language they speak, it’s about the people themselves. The personal identity of a person is not the seclusion of the background it is in part, the way we share this identity with people alike and different. Everything we do has a purpose. We tell the stories passed down to us by our parents, grandparents and if you are really lucky your great-grandparents. As a Filipino I can’t limit myself to a linear perspective, the traditions and values that we carry around with us helps to promote the Filipino spirit.

What are the elements of being a Filipino? That’s not a question I get asked often but I always wondered what my answer would be if I were asked. A true Pinoy (filipino Person) Would stand up not only for his/her brethren but also have the tenacity to promote oneself’s identity and also respect the art and traditions of those different from him/her. The traditions that I speak of are more than just food, dancing and songs. It’s the effort and the growth that follows us when we go to any event or have a very rich and cultured

household. At home my parents and my sister always. And I mean Always. Have dinner with each other and talk about how our days were and what’s new in our lives. Being Filipino means having either rice and/or fish in almost every meal. Breakfast? Fish and oatmeal no problem. Don’t get me started on the mandatory slipper wearing at home. One of the perks of being friends with a Filipino is that they will feed you in their house and feed you like a Filipino person, Pancit and all. Americans have baseball as a past-time. American Filipinos have Karaoke as a normal (almost everyday) activity. Any type of party you can imagine there is Karaoke as well. Speaking of parties, some Pinoy people are notorious for arriving a bit late for an engagement. Even if it was one of their own events. Quirks aside, Filipinos are very honorable and respect each other very well. For those of you who haven’t had the grace of either going to a Filipino event or meet it’s very generous and welcoming people, I shall try my hardest to transport you to the place of many Islands. The arrangement of the Tampa Filipino event is arranged as thus: You enter

through a large warm colored banner. Something that almost feels like a welcome home message. Straight ahead is a two story traditional bamboo house that resides next to a calm pond. The bridge itself is short but that doesn’t mean it isn’t significant. The bridge to me is a physical representation of how the filipino culture has come to terms with the American history. Each food vender is covering the perimeter of the two main walking areas. Smells and sounds of filipino food such as pancit and Halo-Halo are found only a few steps away. The meat is well cooked, some venders even brought a whole pig to roast rotisserie style. The freshly picked Filipino Mangoes capture an envisioned islander resting at a tropical beach Food is not the only thing being sold. Traditional Filipina gowns, laced with the finest of fabric, each authentic formal wear is hand woven to ensure the finest quality. A gentleman like myself has several Barong Tagalogs (mainly formal wear for men that includes a see-through shirt with a white shirt under neath). I chose not to wear mine because

I am a very messy pancit eater. In the middle is a four tent market of Filipino goodies such as: rosaries, Shirts, Hats, Bracelets, Flags ties, bags, and various forms of other trinkets that carry the Pinoy Spirit along with them. And lastly is the grand stage, two tier from the front with a couple dozen lights that illuminate the performers. This is where we see the tradition in it’s true form. The talent of both young and older generations coming together to share themselves and their country to a group not so different from them. Many of my friends came on stage and sang and danced for pure joy of entertaining many generations. When it was my turn to set the stage for The Bayanihan at Wedgefield, I let my fears fade away as I too joined the millions in helping both conserve and express my Filipino Identity.

Simplicity is what the social media users  Compiled by Asia Trend are looking for

We’re all familiar with the major social networks in the U.S. (FB, Twitter, etc.) Facebook says it now has 1.11 billion users. The social networks out in Asia that are growing insanely fast — like WeChat, KakaoTalk, and LINE. Although culturally targeted towards a different audience, these Asian networks will one day come to the U.S. As the top social network on the world,

Facebook is kept out of a population over 1.35 billion Chinese markets. There are the Top 10 Social Nnetworking sites in China: QZONE (712 million users), Social networking website where users can write blogs, share photos, music and much more). TENCENT WEIBO (507 million users), Chinese Microblogging Website. SINA WEIBO (500 million users), Chinese Microblogging Website - a hybird of Twitter and Facebook. WECHAT (300 million users), Micro Messaging App. PENGYOU (259 million users), a realname social network. 51.COM (200 million users), For the Chinese web - gaming community. KAIXIN 001 (113 million users), cloned the most successful and well-known Facebook appications to the Chinese Market. Renren (172 million users), Facebook of China. JIAYUAN (73 million users), The largest internet dating

website of China. DOUBAN (172 million users), Chinese SNS devoted to music, books, firms, and other hobbies. Free messaging services Line in Japan and Kakao in South Korea are more popular than either Facebook or Twitter. In Japan Line has 36 million active users, in South Korea Kakao dominates with 19 million active users. Microblogs used to attract the largest number of users in Japan, more than Facebook, but now Line has eclipsed them both. While Facebook clearly isn’t the favorite social network in Asia, there are still signs that its audience is growing there. Line is continuing to grow in popularity, earlier this year it was announced that it had passed the 100 million user mark. While similar to WhatsApp it is free to download and with no additional subscription fees it makes all its money off of in-app purchases.

lot of new memories with them. I do not regret the 10 years i have spent in Orlando Hoshuko, it was one of the best experience of my life.

These are the comments of some middle school graduates:

Going forward, the 2013-2014 school year started on April 6th, 19 new students for Youchibu, 21 students for the 1st grade of Shougakubu and 8 students for 1st grade of Chuugakubu. We started this school year with 146 students!

Sky Araki - The time I spent at Orlando Hoshuko is very valuable to me. Despite the long Friday nights spent doing homework, and the early Saturday mornings, it was a fantastic experience. I was able to improve and maintain my language skills, as well as find friendships that I feel will last a life time. Mika Irikawa - I went to Orlando Hoshuko for 10 years and during the years i attended it I wanted to quit but I am also glad I didn’t. Orlando Hoshuko has really taught me a lot. I have learned to communicate better with my family and also read and write Japanese. Going to Orlando Hoshuko also gave me a opportunity to meet amazing new friends and have a

For the entrance ceremony, we had Mr. Hudson, the Principal of LHPD in attendance for the ceremony. Thank you very much, Lake Highland Preparatory School! We really appreciate all the support to achieve our goals! Arigato gozaimasu! C.K. Lau

Is there anything that really can help your business - your SALES? Bring you NEW ORDERS and NEW CUSTOMERS, not indirectly, but DIRECTLY?

The answer is Online Ordering system.

In an era in which more than 74 percent of Americans are online, in which most people would rather type text messages and e-mails than pick up the phone, in which we can buy almost everything on the Internet. Today, more and more restaurants, including all the major pizza chains, are taking online orders right now. 3/11/11. One family’s real survival on 3/11/11 became Manga story book, “ Nee Nee Shitteta? - I know what happened” by Nahoko Nakayama and illustrated by Shin Masuda. We have corresponded with her over Facebook and decided to display English story board. Ms. Nakayama and her friends are a small neighborhood group who have been trying to bring back greens to their community. Their effort to recondition salt damaged soil with “Sludge baster”, organic live bacterial soil conditioner was also shared on site. Over $400 was raised and $200 will be donated to Boston Tewassa to support their activity. The proceed will be used to cover expense for our future projects. So far we have sent two

message pillows to survivors in Kesennuma. The third one will be shipped this month to Tourism department of Kesennuma city. Mr. Miyai a survivor from Kesennuma stated in his message to commemorate the second anniversary of disaster, “After two years, we are still in need of support. Physically, economically, mentally, so much needs to be done... we are standing on vast land. Some with hope, other without hope. We want to be self sustainable and independent community again, but until then, please do not forget us and what happened to us. Please stand by us.” Orlando Tewassa Group

FSA’s 8th Annual Sayaw Culture Showcase:

Call of DT

 By David Galindo

The Filipino Student Association at the University of Central Florida holds an annual cultural show called Sayaw for the UCF community and the Orlando community. On April 6th, 2013, FSA held it’s 8th Annual Sayaw Cultural Showcase: Call of DT. This year’s theme was based off the popular video game, Call of Duty. The reason BJ Ducusin and Matthew Gorion, FSA’s Dance Troupe Co-Coordinators, chose this theme was because they wanted to emphasize the

28

ASIA TREND

Kirk Chan, Henry Ton, and C.K. Lau

elements of teamwork, honor, and passion. These elements play big roles in both Call of Duty and Sayaw, thus birthing their clever mantra of “There’s a trouper in you”. Although Sayaw has a different theme every year, the show is always comprised of showcasing the culture of the Philippines through dances, songs, food, and videos performed and provided solely by the Filipino Student Association. This year, FSA was honored to have Asia Trend,

SNAP! Studio Booth, and many more new additions partake in their Sayaw. At the end of the show, a segment was dedicated to their retiring advisor of 19 years, Josefina Tatlonghari. She was awarded with a plaque as a thank you for all her years of love and service towards FSA. ASIA TREND EXTRA To watch the performance videos, visit www.Youtube.com/asiatrend

Valencia College Asian Festival On April 2nd, 2013 Valencia College East Campus held its annual Asian Cultural Festival. This year made it even more special with the edition of Central Florida’s premier Taiko drumming Ensemble, Matsuriza. With the help of the faculty and staff of the college, as well as Valencia International Club (VIC), the festival was a smash hit with over 200 students in attendance! This year’s festival featured Asian cuisine, Chinese and Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo), Origami, Kimono and Yukata try-on’s, Japanese sword demonstration (Kenjitsu), and much more!

Another highlight of this year’s festival was the addition of IACE Travel. With their help, students were able to gather a plethora of information regarding travel to Asian countries. Valencia College has many study-abroad programs, making IACE Travel a valuable asset to those students looking to travel beyond America’ borders. As a student of the college, and one of the individuals who helped organize the event, it was a thrilling experience to see so many student getting involved and excited learning about other cultures.
