Leaders from the member countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) pose for a group photo during the opening ceremony of the 17th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, Oct 28, 2010. (Xinhua)
ASEAN to focus on better connectivity The 17th Association of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN) summit opened in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi on Oct 28, with leaders of ASEAN countries adopting the Master Plan of ASEAN Connectivity, which will anchor the region’s bold and long-term strategy to improve the region’s physical, institutional and people-to-people connection. The Master Plan of ASEAN Connectivity aims to enhance the links between its member countries as well as between ASEAN and its partners such as China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, giving the region’s private sector a bigger role in the development of local economies. The plan includes more than 700 projects and programs, with a volume of investment around 380 billion U.S. dollars, according to Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN’s secretary-General. Building a community, which is in line with the fundamental benefits of the ASEAN people, has long been the multi-lateral organization’s aspiration. The idea of establishing a free trade area was first proposed in 1992 by the 4th ASEAN summit. After the Asian financial crisis that broke out in late 1990s, ASEAN realized that in order to ensure the region’s security and stability, cooperation in aspects such as politics, economy, security as well as
social culture must be boosted. Hence, the conception of establishing the ASEAN Community that is similar to the European Union came into being. ASEAN announced in 2003 that by 2020 it will complete the building of the ASEAN Community which comprises three pillars, namely Security Community, Economic Community and Socio-Cultural Community. In 2007, it decided to advance the 2020 deadline to 2015. The “10 countries, one voice” will promote the international standing and influence of the ASEAN countries -- most of which are still developing ones. It will boost their right to speak in handling international affairs and make them a new emerging power that is not to be neglected. In this way, an advantageous atmosphere for ASEAN countries’ economic and social development will be created, benefiting the roughly 600 million people there. The realization of connectivity in areas such as transportation infrastructure, commodity, finance and human resource is the prerequisite and foundation for the establishing of the ASEAN Community, which comes from a high level of resource integration. After more than 40 years of development, ASEAN has become a dynamic and fast-growing regional organization of all 10 Southeast

Asian countries, its cooperation covering almost all political, economic, cultural and social areas. It has made significant contributions to consolidating and promoting peace, stability and cooperation in Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific, and has managed to build reliable partnership with major powers and key regions across the globe, playing an indispensable role in regional and international cooperation frameworks. ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a geo-political and economic organization of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, the protection of the peace and stability of the region, and to provide opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully. ASEAN spans over an area of 4.46 million km2, 3% of the total land area of Earth, with a population of approximately 600 million people, 8.8% of the world population. In 2010, its combined nominal GDP had grown to USD $1.8 trillion. If ASEAN was a single country, it would rank as the 9th largest economy in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia in terms of nominal GDP. asiatrendmagazine.com Nov 2010

On October 16, REACH members volunteered and performed in the Asia Trend Magazine Asian Cultural Expo at Downtown Disney! The event was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn more about Asian culture. The mission of REACH is to promote the recognition and experience of Asian cultural heritage by reaching out to the Central Florida community.
Anna Hinkeldey working at the REACH booth
REACH invites students from all High Schools and Middle Schools within the Central Florida region as members. The membership form can be founded on the website at www.reachocf.org under “Get Involved” and the Facebook page. REACH provides many wonderful programs to foster young leaders through cultural performances, classroom presentations and carnival activities. If you would like to know more about REACH, please email reachocf@gmail.com.
REACH Ensemble Hans Lau, accompanied by advisor Pauline Ho introduces REACH to Mayor Buddy Dyer
REACH members pose with Mayor Buddy Dyer
Asian Cultural EXPO was the first carnival event that REACH participated and as a President, I was excited to meet 17 members across different high schools. I had the privilege to introduce REACH to Mayor Buddy Dyer and also played in a REACH Ensemble led by Koichi Kanaoka. Through this experience in Asian Cultural Expo, community service can be a fun event when teenagers all serve together with a common goal. Teamwork makes huge differences. It confirmed REACH’s goal to bring all teenagers together to grow in leadership and reach out to the community. I look forward to meeting more REACH members and serve the community; build leadership and friendship with them.

I was given the great opportunity to be a REACH volunteer at the Asian Cultural Expo. After only being there for several hours, I regretted not arriving earlier. I was astonished to see many different groups and organizations participating in the dragon boat races. I had no idea so many people were interested in Asian culture. Working at the REACH booth, I saw many new faces from different schools around Central Florida. In a few minutes, we all connected and learned more about each other. We worked together, laughed together, talked together, and even cheered for the competing dragon boat teams together. By how easily we connected with each other, I could tell that in the future, REACH will definitely be able to reach out and bring interest to Asian cultures. It was such a great and fun experience promoting REACH and encouraging others to learn more about Asian cultures.
I participated in the Asian Cultural Expo alongside with REACH members. Since I was the Treasurer of REACH, I was in charge of selling parasols and fans. At first I was quite worried about the sales that we could make but once our REACH members went out together and made up our own slogan to attract customers, it turned out to be fun. I would never do this by myself. Also I got a chance to play butterfly lovers on the stage to perform in front of the audience. The REACH members worked diligently, some did art and craft and some did selling. A total of 18 REACH members were there at the Asian Cultural Expo! Overall, the Asian Cultural Expo was a great experience to both the REACH members and me. I feel that REACH is fulfilling its purpose by impacting our members and gradually shaping us into leaders.

Liberty Middle School and Odyssey Middle School Over a thousand students at Liberty Middle School, Odyssey Middle School and Tavares Middle School were captivated by an exciting traditional Taiwanese folk sports performance. The performers, pretty much the same age as the audiences, traveled over ten thousands miles from Keelung, Taiwan, performing their traditional folk sports including rope skipping, diabolo spinning and top twirling. These unique skills were infused with sports, music, and dances to create another form of performing art. Odyssey Middle School arranged a special campus tour of media center, news room, classrooms, band room, chorus, and track field for the performers to complete this valuable cultural exchange. Lily C. Wu:
How Rotary Came to Baldwin Park
By Jodi Kiely
On New Year’s Eve 2009, Lily C. Wu made a resolution: In 2010, she wanted to give back to her community. Since moving to Central Florida from New York City in 2008 after her husband accepted a job in Winter Park, Wu, an eco-enthusiast and owner of Purelily Living (purelilyliving.com), felt it was time to become more involved in her new neighborhood. Once 2010 came into full swing, Wu scoured the Internet searching for service organizations she could join within her vicinity. During her research, she learned that the nearby community of Baldwin Park was in the process of starting a Rotary Club. She jumped at the opportunity to become involved. Rotary is a worldwide organization made of business and professional leaders. It strives to provide community service, promote high ethical standards in business and people’s personal lives, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. The organization also prides itself in the ideals of fellowship, friendship and service to others. “I wanted to be a part of establishing this new group because I felt it would be more exciting and rewarding to build something completely new and to help develop it into something amazing rather than to join an established organization that was already set in its ways,” Wu said. “So when I learned that Baldwin Park was starting a brand new chapter of a Rotary Club, I attended the planning meetings and expressed an interest in joining the board.” Jodi Kiely currently works as the development associate at Quest, Inc. where she manages several of the non-profit organization’s fundraising, communications and marketing projects. Quest’s mission is to build communities where people with disabilities achieve their goals, whether it is going to school, having a job, living independently or experiencing summer camp. Originally from Minnesota, Kiely is also a former Peace Corps volunteer and is active in several local organizations including the Central Florida Asian-American Chamber of Commerce.
10 Nov 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com
The Baldwin Park Rotary Club was officially chartered this April, and Wu currently serves as the club’s sergeant at arms, Social Chair and web guru. The 32 year-old graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City has high hopes for this newly formed organization. “My hope is that this will be a thriving club that will someday celebrate its 100th year anniversary,” she said. “I would also like our club to do more for the community and in the com-
munity, especially since the Merchant’s Association recently disbanded. For example, with just one month of planning and a handful of members, we put on a spectacular Independence Day Bash on July 3rd with over 6,000 people in attendance,” she said. Through her involvement with Rotary, Wu has noticed one thing -- the lack of Asian-Americans involved in the organization. “I have visited other Rotary clubs in the area and attended district-wide events and am surprised to have often been the only Asian-American present. It’s disappointing to see how little participation there is in Rotary from the Central Florida Asian-American community. Rotary strives to have a diverse membership, and I would love to see more Asian-Americans step up and become involved,” she said. Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities, so if this sounds like you, Wu recommends you visit a meeting and check out the Baldwin Park Rotary website to learn more (http://www.baldwinparkrotary.org). Aside from Rotary events and running her own business, Wu also volunteers with the Central Florida Sustainable Food Project which is working to create a local resource guide to increase awareness about the benefits of locally produced and organic food. Wu’s volunteer work is part of her belief that giving back to one’s community is not only good for the neighborhood but also good for those who volunteer. When asked what advice she would give young Asian- Americans, Wu said, “Many Asian-Americans are extremely career-oriented and family-focused without much time for other activities. While careers and families are important, it’s equally important to carve out some time and energy to get more involved with your community because your contribution will also greatly enrich your personal and professional lives, which also benefit the area that you live in.”

Thanksgiving!
Cupcakes
Brussels Sprouts in Truffle Balsamic Vinegar
My family is in CA and although I was born and raised in the Philippines, I have spent most of my adult life in the sunshine state. Growing up, we never celebrated Thanksgiving because it wasn’t a holiday in the Philippines but we have come to embrace Thanksgiving as if it is our own. Now granted, Turkey is not something that was easily available in the Philippines, it literally took an act of divine intervention to have my mother cook turkey because it’s something she will never eat. Well heaven forbid she starves on Thanksgiving so she would prepare traditional party/holiday foods from the Philippines such as Pancit and Lumpia to go along with a traditional Thanksgiving feast. For the seven years that I have been married, I have come to assimilate that same tradition with my new family. My husband is from Connecticut and grew up with the usual Thanksgiving fare – Turkey, Ham, Sweet Potatoes Casserole, Green Bean Casserole, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, and of course pies galore. I remember my

nervousness cooking my first turkey. I prepared myself for two weeks looking at various recipes, talking to people and just reading about this ugly bird. The previous years I have purchased them from Honey Baked Ham but I really don’t know what has gotten into me our second Thanksgiving in GA. I had to cook a turkey! But, I couldn’t let Thanksgiving go with just my husband’s tradition. I would be failing my step kids if I don’t try to raise them in a multi-cultural home. So I made Filipino food just like my mother did. And, every year, a turkey has graced our table. As the years have passed, I became bolder with my attempts to make turkey. I have moved on from the traditional oven roasted Turkey to fried Turkey. This will be this year’s tradition as well. In addition to the fried turkey, my side dishes have also varied. Dishes like Grilled Brussels Sprouts Drizzled in Truffle Glaze, Funeral Potatoes, Charsiu Pork, Oreo Truffles and decorated Cup Cakes. Thanksgiving is not just all about giving
thanks. It’s also about maintaining old traditions and creating new ones that we can pass on to our children and generations to come. Other than preparing non tradition thanksgiving fare, we have also opened our doors to those who may be alone. In my home, we have made Thanksgiving just like any other Filipino parties, we invite people to join whether its family or a friend, there’s always room on our table and lots of foods to share. How will you celebrate?

Well, in 2010, just as Bob Dylan told us back in 1964, “the times, they are a-changing.” This was never more evident than at the Chinese American Scholars and Professionals Association of Florida (CASPAF) annual conference held on September 11th. On the surface, it was a reprise of the 2009 conference in that both conferences focused on new and important developments in US healthcare presented by world-class experts in the field. However, the difference between the two conferences was deeper than a list of speakers and topics. The difference was evident as soon as one walked into the conference room because the buzz and electricity in the room was palpable. This atmosphere was created because all members of the audience had a common bond…needing to deal with the real world impact on health care access and affordability because of the Obama Administration’s healthcare reform. The conference was seamlessly organized by Dr. Puxiao Cen who was the Program Chair as well as serving as the Vice President of CASPAF. Dr. Cen managed to create a conference that was
interesting and informative for both healthcare professionals and the lay public. She paid particular attention to including topics that are often overlooked or given little consideration, such as end of life care and tissue/organ donation, in the chaos that is today’s healthcare environment. The tone of the conference, and the mindset of the audience, was obvious from the presentation of the first speaker, Dr. Kevin Accola. Dr. Accola’s presentation, entitled “Cardiac Surgery: Past, Present, and Future,” underscored the idea that accessibility and affordability do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. In fact, even in the rarified arena of cardiac surgery, a high-end procedure or technique may exist, but on the sliding scale of cost-benefit, a patient may not be permitted access. The Keynote Speaker, Dr. Antonia Novello, who served as the fourteenth Surgeon General of the United States, gave a talk entitled “Health Care Policy and Reform in the United States.” Dr. Novello elucidated the relationship among the government’s healthcare reform, medical practice in the real world, and impact on patients. This needs to be addressed posthaste because there are 100,000s of people who need donations and the list has a new name added to it every 12 minutes. The process of organ and tissue donation falls outside the current healthcare reform and therefore remains under the control of the individual without third party interference.

The final presentation, “End of Life Care: What is it and Where is it Going in the 21st Century,” was delivered by Michael Keil, MD. Dr. Keil explained the difference among the various types of end-of-life care and the ethical issues they entail. He pointed out that modern healthcare results in people living longer with chronic diseases, the dying process has been extended, and interdependent family care has been devalued. Also, more than 2/3 of Medicare dollars are spent on the last year of life, which now often consist of frequent hospitalizations, uncoordinated care, repeated tests, and sometimes unnecessary, aggressive yet ineffective treatments. The entire 2010 CASPAF conference was an extraordinarily well conceived, planned, and executed gem from the fertile mind of Dr. Puxiao Cen. She even orchestrated the tone and tempo of the meeting on the day of the conference like a maestro conducting a symphony. Hopefully, this brilliant and thought-provoking conference will result in people taking action and taking control of their healthcare and their lives. Building Up Good Karma
Source: The Standard - www.thestandard.com.hk
By Master Kerby Kuek
The word “karma” means doing an action. Doing good is kusula karma, doing evil is akusala karma, and doing neutral actions - neither of merit or demerit - is avyakata karma.
sky’s energy. In scientific terms, this is the magnetic field and radiation emissions. The Earthly Branch represents the earth’s energies with directions.
The person who does all these forms of karma is the owner of his karma, and it is he who is responsible for his own good or evil. Each one of us should realize that we own our karma, which is what we have done in absolutely every case.
Each year, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches combine in different ways, and the chemical reaction results in different energy directions, some kind and some unkind.
Think of someone who is intelligent, clever and wealthy; who has never had much illness, who has physical well- being; who, when he thinks of something he wants, it comes to him as though the gods sent it. And wherever he goes, people look after him with care and respect, and venerate him. He has so much good fortune, but he cannot share it with anyone. In the same way, each of us is responsible for the results of our own karma, good or bad. This is the way of karma, and the owner of good karma is the heart that knows. Obstructing Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter) Tai Sui literally means the star that is fully in charge, or in command, for that particular year. This is heavily associated with the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stem represents heavenly energies, and thus the
In the Year of the Boar (2007), for example, the North direction/ sector had a candlelight fire element. Imagine a water-loving Boar interacting with light fire energies - what would the chemical reaction be like? You tell me. Stock markets crashed, bankruptcies surged. Volatility, volatility and volatility! The Tai Sui sector should be kept quiet. Construction, demolition or any movement in such a sector is said to obstruct the natural flow of energies. That is why there is a saying in Chinese: Never obstruct the Tai Sui, and leave it alone. This year, the Tai Sui sector is in the northeast and next year, in the east. Thought of the month: Experience is the name everybody gives to their mistakes.
In Sync With Body Clock The best time to use the loo is the rabbit hours from five to seven in the morning, when the large intestine is at work and we start having bowel movements. This is a natural phenomenon: as the sun (yang) rises, our body starts to discharge toxins. According to Chinese medicinal theory, all the organs in our body depend on one another to function efficiently. For instance, lungs aid in the smooth functioning of our bowels, and constipation takes place if our lungs are not working at their optimum. Breakfast The best time for breakfast is during the dragon hours between seven and nine. The stomach is one of the most important organs, and its operations have an impact on other parts of the body. It is important that we eat breakfast during this time as our digestive system is at its most efficient. Pimples, especially on the face, are also caused by a poorly working stomach. Work The best time for work is during the snake hours between nine and 11 in the morning, when the spleen is at its operational best. After food has been digested, the spleen disperses the energy into the blood and

distributes it to the body via the heart. To check whether our spleen is working properly, we can observe two things: one, the muscles in our body are firm and, second, our lips will have a nice gloss. Naps The best time for naps are during the horse hours between 11am and 1pm. People in ancient times paid particular attention to the horse and rat hours (11pm to 1am) because two important organs are hard at work during these times - the heart and the kidney. It is best that we rest or nap awhile to recuperate during these times. The heart, the fire element, is on the ascendancy, as is the kidney, a water element that suppresses the strong fire. The Chinese school of CAACF celebrated Confucius’s birthday as Teacher’s appreciation Day on September 25 with more than 200 students and parents. Principal Shiow-Chih started the event with a video about Confucius. Other activities included tea ceremony, student performances and quiz with prizes. In China , Confucius birthday is celebrated as “National Teacher’s Day” on September 28, honoring the best teacher in Chinese history, which advocated the right for learning and knowledge to everyone. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. Confucius’ thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism (儒家). It was introduced to Europe by the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who

Between Ignorance And Enlightenment
To Never Retire Regardless of location in the world–be it the northern or southern hemisphere–most regions experience the changes of the four seasons–spring, summer, fall, and winter. Spring brings gentle breezes and showers, summer sees flourishing flowers and greenery, fall becomes dry and gusty, and winter gets cold and icy. The different climates of the four seasons can be likened to the various stages of life–each with its own characteristics. A philosopher once compared life to the four seasons: youth is spring, adulthood is summer, middle age is fall, and old age is winter. Just as each season has its unique vista to offer, the four seasons of life also have their individual attributes. It is indeed an apt comparison.
Where justice is, don’t fall behind. Where profit is, don’t jump ahead. Guang Ming Temple
October-November 2010 Calendar Medicine Buddha Dharma Service (Nov 7, 10am)
Not only are there four stages to the seasons and life, in reality, all phenomena go through changes in each of the different phases. The universe goes through the four stages of formation, existence, decay, and emptiness. The world is born of causes and conditions, followed by a limited time of existence, and, as it goes through changes and increasing levels of decay, it finally ceases to exist. However, emptiness does not mean the end, because the world goes through the cycle of formation, existence, decay, and emptiness again and again, endlessly. In reality, a human body also has four stages: birth, aging, sickness, and death. At birth, the entire household rejoices; in old age, loved ones are concerned; when sick, the mind worries; and upon death, the family grieves. But death does not spell the end of life. It is merely a transmigration; more rounds of birth, aging, sickness, and death will follow. Our minds are also unceasingly going through stages of arising, abiding, changing, and extinction.

the thought. But as the thought changes, a myriad of variations occur, and as it ceases, it wilts like a phases of phenomena, but we can steer the wheel of the four seasons of life. So when they arrive, we should make the best use of them. The spring of youth is the time to sprout and grow. We should fortify ourselves by absorbing nutrients, cultivating our compassion, and embracing the will to save the world. In the flourishing blossom of summer, we should benefit others by offering our energy to complement their growth. With the approaching maturity of fall, we should contribute what we know to the beginners in life by giving them the bountiful fruits that we have acquired. Upon the arrival of the winter of life, we should make use of our achievements to enrich the world, just as the winter sun warms the earth–what a wonderful finishing note to our lives that would be! 5 Most Engaged Brands in Social Media
Compiled by Ricky Ly
a $100,000 grant. On Coca-Cola’s YouTube channel, the soda company launched “Unlock The Secret,” a viral video campaign featuring Coke’s inventor, Doc Pemberton. All of these efforts tie together Coca-Cola’s brand of happiness, and it’s created an interesting and original experience while engaging with consumers online. 3. Oreo Cookies - Oreo is the third most engaged brand according to Famecount, and for a brand that’s been around since 1912, racking up 12 million “Likes” on Facebook is a great way to prove that good products have real staying power. The Oreo Facebook Page is a place to find recipes, videos, photos of fans enjoying the cookie, and games like Twist To Win for a chance to meet the Double Stuf Racing League (Shaquille O’Neal, Apolo Ohno, Eli Manning and Venus Williams).
Engaging in social media is about being extremely open, creative and flexible. To stay competitive online, brands need to be investing in social media as a way to extend themselves to their customers. While advertising and cultivating an image are still important, it’s interaction that creates loyal customers. Using social media to show customers that your business is connected to what they say, think and feel about your products can amplify your brand’s message. Below are the top 5 most engaged Brands in Social Media compiled by mashable.com 1. Starbucks Coffee - Starbucks is on just about every corner in the real world, and that’s the same strategy the company has taken online as well. When it comes to a web presence, Starbucks has made its mark on Twitter , Facebook, YouTube , Foursquare, mobile apps and with its own social network, My Starbucks Ideas. The company dominates the social media landscape, creating active and engaging profiles on a variety of platforms. Take a quick look at the coffee giant’s Twitter page, and you’ll see the company has just

more than 1 million followers. The next thing you’ll notice is that there’s a lot of conversation going on. Starbucks is keeping busy responding to mentions, apologizing for bad experiences, and just carrying on some interesting conversations with its followers. Meanwhile on Facebook, more than 15 million people “Like” the brand. And Starbucks is trying to make buying its product as integrated and seamless as possible. 2. Coca – Cola - As one of the most universally recognized brands, it’s not surprising that Coca-Cola is the second most engaged brand according to Famecount. Just like Starbucks, Coke is active on Twitter, engaging in conversation with its 142,000 followers. Given that it has a worldwide following, it’s appropriate that many of the tweets are written in different languages. On Facebook, it’s somewhat astounding that 15 million people “Like” the soft drink empire, but the company has done a good job of keeping things interesting and interactive. The Page is a hub of all sorts of activity, including posting fan photos, videos and social good initiatives like Live Positively, where fans voted for America’s favorite park to receive
4. Skittles Candy - Skittles has an amazing online presence, starting with its website — a vibrant landing page that invites you to “Experience The Rainbow” by interacting with various features throughout the on-site experience. Users have opportunities to vote and post photos and videos while interacting with content. Keeping with the community theme on another site, Share Skittles is the place where YouTube videos of fans eating Skittles are posted. While Skittles hasn’t quite figured out how to leverage Twitter, logging little more than 6,000 followers and producing some really weird tweets, more than 12 million “Likes” show they managed to figured out how to make use of Facebook. 5. Red Bull - Red Bull is a brand that is associated with procrastination and the need for energy — last-minute studying, late-night partying, early morning meetings or classes, and the ability to keep you awake at almost any hour of the day. With social media, though, the Austrian company has something more to offer than salvation from long work days and early morning grumpiness. With more than 10 million “Likes” on Facebook, it offers a really cool and interactive Facebook Page that appeals to the brand’s core consumer.

Expo Mission Accomplished for USA Pavilion
Compiled by Linda Lim
The United States’ participation at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai was a huge success according to the US Commissioner General, Jose Villarreal. “We especially met our public diplomacy objectives. We were able to tell an America story in an interesting way to a large number of Chinese citizens, many of whom have had very little exposure to America.” The 5,600 square-meter US Pavilion structure which resembles that of an eagle with outstretched wings, attracted more than 7 million visitors throughout the 180 days of the Expo. “The Expo gave us an unparalleled and historical opportunity to communicate with the large segment of Chinese population, not just directly with people who have visited it but the amount of press that we have got throughout China has been extraordinary,” Villarreal said. “Better City, Better Life” was the theme for this year’s World Expo which represents the World’s commitment to the common wish for a better global environment, “This was a wonderful opportunity, not just for the US but the rest of the world, to demonstrate a commitment to cooperation on the big issue of the day - the global environment.”

“10 Fundamental Japanese Dishes and Drinks” 農林水産省「日本食10選」 It’s been a while since when Japanese foods globally boomed. Today, it’s not rare to see Sushi bars in different countries outside Japan and even Ramen bars and “Izakaya” (taverns) are increasing in numbers. Japanese foods are introduced as being (1) Safe, (2) Rich ingredients nutritionally well-balanced, (3) Tasty, (4) Visually beautiful.
Shabu-shabu しゃぶしゃぶ
If you are asked “what is famous Japanese cuisine?”, what comes to mind? MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) of Japan draws up “10 Fundamental Japanese Dishes and Drinks” to promote Japanese cuisine in the world. 1. Miso Soup/Sumashi Soup みそ汁/すまし汁 2. Sushi/Sashimi 寿司/刺し身 3. Teppan-yaki/Sukiyaki/Shabu-shabu
Teppan-yaki

Sake/Shochu 日本酒/焼酎 10. Japanese Tea + Japanese Sweets
Japanese Tea + Japanese Sweets 日本茶+和菓子
日本茶+和菓子
How many of these are you aware of as Japanese foods? Have you had all of them? Sushi, Tempura, Teppanyaki and Sake are all well known and popular worldwide. I know some people who are crazy about Shabu-shabu, Shochu, or Japanese Sweets. This usually indicates these people are “Washoku-tsu” (Japanese food connoisseur) or/and more into Japanese culture not only Japanese food. As noted in #8, Japan produces very good fruits. Those fruits are grown with special care by farmers until being boxed and beautifully displayed at stores. Fruit in Japan is a lot pricier than here in the U.S., but it is worth the investment. Make sure to try those premium fancy fruit if you have a chance to visit Japan especially the white peaches, melons, and Kyoho grapes. They’re magnificent!

Dragon Boat Teams Race Through Haulover Beach Park After a mid-week drenching from Tropical Depression #16, it was nothing but sunny skies on October 2nd for the United Chinese Association of Florida’s 8th annual South Florida Dragon Boat Festival. Haulover Beach Park Marina was once again the chosen venue, and one of the nice enhancements that Race Director Johnson Ng, had been pushing for in the past few years was the addition of a temporary loading dock closer to the Park area. This greatly helped with the logistics of the race and provided for a more efficient and smooth flow as racers were no longer required to walk the extra distance to the Marina and then paddle back to the starting line. This year marks the start of a partnership with the American Cancer Society- Relay For Life’s “Paddle For Health Against Cancer, Launching Florida Asian Initiative of American Cancer Society”. Over 20 teams competed in the categories of Mixed, Open, Women, and Academy. Qualifying heats were performed throughout the morning, followed by Opening Ceremonies at Noon. Along with the racing, other festivities included: cultural performances, an egg roll eating contest, martial arts performances, a kids craft area, and a variety of food vendors from Korean and Thai to Hot Dogs and Wings.
