The Chinese American Scholars and Professionals Association of Florida
(CASPAF) Annual Conference 2011 The Chinese American Scholars and Professionals Association of Florida (CASPAF) annual conference held on September 3rd focused on new and important developments in US healthcare presented by world-class experts in the field. This year, the subject of the conference was the impact of the environment on health and wellness. The conference was seamlessly organized by Tien-shuenn Wu 吳天順, Ph.D., who is the President of CASPAF, and Puxiao Cen 岑瀑嘯, M.D., who was the Program Chair as well as the Vice President of CASPAF. In her Opening Remarks, Dr. Cen drew on the history of ancient Greece to introduce the topic of the conference. She was able to show the long history behind man’s interest in the interrelationship between the environment and health.
The Keynote Speakers were David D. Ho 何大一, M.D., TIME Magazine - Man of the Year for 1996, who presented “Challenges in Addressing the HIV/AIDS Pandemic” and Alfred A. Bove, M.D., former President of American College of Cardiology, who spoke on “America’s Health Care Reform”. Dr. Ho gave a brilliant discussion about the current status of the AIDS/HIV pandemic in China, as well as other parts of the world. He gave incredible insight into the way the nation’s culture has impacted the transmission and treatment of the disease. Incredibly, over 100,000 children in China have been orphaned because of the disease. With Dr. Ho’s hard work and the contributions of thousands of Chinese in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the US, the pandemic will hopefully start to diminish in its impact on China.

Dr. Ho was followed by presentations from a number of other experts on stimulating topics of healthcare. The other Keynote Speaker, Dr. Bove, covered the volatile topic of healthcare reform in the United States. This is becoming a much more contentious area of focus because of the difficult economy and the increasing cost of healthcare in this country. It was a timely and enlightening discussion that thoroughly intrigued the audience. The other presentations included: Vincent Hsu, M.D. talked about “How the American Lifestyle Results in New and Emerging Infections”; Daniel Layish, M.D. covered ”An Overview of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease”; Jeffrey Elston, M.D. presented “Update on Arthritis”; Samuel Giday, M.D. spoke on “GI malignancies and the Environment”; Richard asiatrendmagazine.com

The second section of the conference was about water resources and flood prevention. It began with a presentation about the Tsen-Wen Reservoir matter by Wen Chung 鍾文義, Ph.D., who is the President of Chung Associates, Inc. Then there was a wonderful Student Poster Exhibition with posters entitled “The Effect of Flow Rate and Particle Size on Quantity of Particle Transfer” by Mr. Hans Lau of Winter Park High School and “Counting Submicron Particles Using Micropipette Coulter Counter” by Mr. Yuqing Lin of the Physics Department at University of Central Florida. The water portion continued with “Optimization of Hydrosystem Management and Operation – A 40-Year Retrospective” by William W. G. Yeh 葉 文工, Ph.D., who is the Richard G. Newman AECOM Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at UCLA. The conference concluded with “Flood Prevention Strategy in Confronting the Global Climate Change-a Case Study of Taiwan” by ShenHsien Chen 陳伸賢, Ph.D., who is the SecretaryGeneral of New Taipei City Government in Taiwan. The entire 2011 CASPAF conference was extraordinarily well conceived, planned, and executed. Dr. Cen managed to create a conference that was interesting and informative for both healthcare professionals and the lay public. She paid particular attention to include topics that are often overlooked or given little consideration, such as the impact of modern life on our health. She created a cohesive program of presentations that captivated the attention of all attendees while providing crucial information for individual health and wellness. Hopefully, this thought-provoking conference will result in people taking action toward environmental protection and taking control of their healthcare. Asia Trend Magazine hosted its second annual Asian Cultural Expo (inside the awesomely fun Downtown Disney) Did I mention tiny? The expo’s size was obviously not reflecting how many Chinese are overtaking the world—just a handful of tents. But wait… didn’t I see dozens of tents? Perhaps not coincidently, dragon boat races were taking place nearby along the Disney waterfront. The tents served as the home base for teams from all over the country.
IACE Travel: Jason Seymore and Ari Westmoreland Puxiao Cen, MD FACC from Florida Heart Group
Volunteers from Valencia Community College
Although there were only a few Asian-loving tents, the stage was the Expo’s focus. I cheered as the Filipino team from UCF showed off some of my country’s dances (sprinkled with humor). I clapped at the Malaysian cultural performances, Japanese fans, Tai Chi and Chinese yo-yo workshops among many others. (The yo-yo workshop WOULD’VE been fun if it weren’t for my show-off Thai partner Pij who managed to make all beginners look like manatees)
SNAP! Studio Booth: Kim Tran and Trung Nguyen
Tinikling workshop
The headliners were the always entertaining Taiko drummers– a crazy crowd of people ranging from recent toddlers to senior citizens and all still managing to beat drums in unison. Just as entertaining were the continuous dragon boat races. Watching those graceful boats glide by through the power of paddles dancing to a drum beat made me want to join them in the water. Ah… maybe someday.
Chinese Calligraphy Demonstration and fundraise for Y.E.S.S. – Youth Enrichment and Senior Services Chinese Yo Yo workshop
And of course… there’s still all the Legos, Mickey ears and restaurants of Downtown Disney to explore when you’re done. Next year, I hope the expo grows in size (because I’d also love to also LOOK at Asian culture within some tents—who wants to sell bonsai trees?), hire me as the MC, and have even more performances! And next year… I hope to see you there! (… and especially you Asians) Support Asia Trend Magazine, Become our Advertiser!

R.E.A.C.H.’S First Dragon Boat Race When REACH decided to form a dragon boat team to race in the Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival, I didn’t think we would be able to find a group of committed students to paddle. Even if we were able to form a team, would we be capable of racing with other strong teams in the race? To my surprise, many of my friends wanted to try dragon boating. Our first practice was rough, and we were far from where we needed to be a month before the big race. As we continued practicing, many of us realized that in order to do well in the race, we needed to work together, stay focused, and be determined to win. The last two practices were definitely our strongest practices. Regardless of the heavy rain during our second to last practice, we still continued to paddle our best. On race day, I could tell everyone was nervous and excited at the same time - nervous about how good the other 70 teams were and excited to show others how far our team has come in just 5 practices. In our first race, we came in last place, but we didn’t let that thought discourage us. At this point, our team realized we needed to step up our effort and paddle to the best of our ability. While we rested in between races, the Asian Cultural Expo was going on. Besides being a paddler for REACH’s dragon boat team, I was also the Master of Ceremony for the cultural performances during the Asian Cultural Expo. I have to admit I was nervous at first, but soon enough, I
ScORCh Black from Orlando Rowing Club
warmed up to the crowd of spectators. While reading introductions of each performing group, I could not help but feel pleased to see so many groups wanting to share the Asian culture with others. I was astonished at how well each group worked together. Our dragon boat team needed to be just like that. Our third race was definitely the most challenging because we were practically neck and neck with the Walgreens team towards the end of the race. I could tell we were so close to winning, so I knew I needed to remind everyone to stay focused and stay in sync. Crowds cheered as we quickly crossed the finish line. As we got off the boat waiting for the judges to review the winning team, we discovered that we won first place in the Mixed Division D Consolation Finals. I was so proud of my team! We worked very hard and exhibited great team work. I am truly grateful that Asia Trend Magazine sponsored REACH’s dragon boat team. Without their sponsorship, our

team would not have had the chance to succeed in the Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival. I am also thankful for Captains John Huang and John Chung, who took time out of their busy schedules to teach us the basic techniques in dragon boat racing. We all became closer friends practicing and racing together. We entered the race hoping to learn more about dragon boat racing, and we left the race with two trophies and two medals. I’m sad that this “season” of paddling has come to an end, but who knows? Maybe we’ll race again in the future.. During our practices, we not only learned the technique and skills needed to be successful in dragon boat racing, but we also learned the value of working together, focusing, and cooperating with each other. Our practices were tough, but they were certainly what made us successful in the end, and we have our coach, John Huang and steersman, John Chung to thank for guiding and pushing us to reach our potential. During the race, we were all very nervous yet confident thanks to our preparation. Personally, I just tried to block out everything going on around and focus on staying in sync with the paddle in front of me. Our first race was tough, but we didn’t let that discourage us. We regained our confidence and pushed to do well in the other two races, and won champions of Consolation Division D as a result. The experience, overall, was very enjoyable, and I hope to there are more opportunities to participate in dragon boat racing in the future! I was as happy as a puppy when REACH finally formed a dragon boat team in September. As lead paddler of REACH dragon boat, I learned the importance of taking charge and working together. I started dragon boat paddling as being a backup paddler from CHARGE at last year’s Disney International Dragon Boat Festival. I still remember the first practice of the REACH dragon boat team. The boat nearly capsized because we were so disorganized and unfocused. With more practices and by working together, we became better at staying focused and paddling together. On race day, I was confident because our dragon boat team was already prepared for the best. My experience with dragon boating taught me that success in sports depends mostly on our mental strength and not our physical strength. Our

REACH dragon boat team won first place in the Consolation D Division not because we had the strongest bodies but because we had the strongest mentalities and great teamwork. I had fun paddling with my friends and would like to thank Asia Trend Magazine for sponsoring REACH’s dragon boat team. I would like to continue dragon boating in college if there is a chance. By: Hans Lau, Lead stroke of REACH Powered by Asia Trend, Former President of REACH
The first time I participated in dragon boating was over a year ago, and our team hadn’t had a single practice. At the time, it just seemed like a fun thing to do. However, when I joined the REACH Dragon Boat team this year, I knew I was going to have to work and practice hard. It’s not easy being a good Dragon Boat team; everyone has to give it their all and put all their attention into the group. Everyone has to work together in order to gain success. I never realized how important cooperation was until I realized that only trying hard by yourself won’t make your boat any faster. Dragon boating was a unique experience for me as it was one of the times in my life that I had to put so much of myself into a team and hope that my other team members would too. When race day came, it felt like one of the biggest days of my life. The whole team wanted to win, but everyone else did too, so we knew it was going to be difficult. In the end, it was definitely tons of fun and I learned a lot about teamwork. By: Ben Liu, Captain of REACH Powered by Asia Trend, Secretary of REACH
For me, the dragon boat practices were both intense and fun. My friends and I joked around before getting on the boat but when it came down to serious rowing, we were all focused. The first race that we did during the Expo, I felt proud
to have made the time that we made against the professional teams. It was really awesome when we won our two trophies and medals! I felt proud that all of our hard work during the practices paid off after the Expo. The Asian Cultural Expo was also very exciting because I got to see many unique performances by kids around my age. Overall, this experience was very fun and rewarding. By: Phu Nguyen, paddler for REACH Powered by Asia Trend, Webmaster of REACH As the drummer for REACH powered by Asia Trend, my job was to sit at the front of the boat and keep everyone on time and in focus. Synchronization is extremely important in dragon boat racing, so I had to use the drum to keep everyone in rhythm and also yell at my teammates if we weren’t in sync or we didn’t have enough power. The paddlers aren’t allowed to look at the other boats while we are racing because they have to focus, but I could look to see who was ahead or behind us and yell to put more power if we were behind. My job basically consisted of screaming at people. By: Tiffany Tang, drummer for REACH Powered by Asia Trend, President-elect of REACH
Three months ago, I had never heard of dragon boat racing. I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined our team, REACH powered by Asia Trend. Although it was physically challenging, participating in dragon boat with all my friends was really enjoyable. We worked together and accomplished a lot. I was really proud of our progress. After five practices, we were able to get better times than much more practiced teams. I really hope we get to participate in dragon boat racing again! World Population Exceeded 7,000,000,000
By Teri Mitchell
“One of the 7 billionth” certificates in Japan On October 31st, the world population exceeded 7 billion. To celebrate births all over the world that reached 7 billion, the United Nations is working to develop solutions to combat world hunger and poverty caused by over population. According to the UN, the world population is rapidly increasing. It was 3 billion in 1959, and doubled during the past half century and exceeded 7 billion on the 31st. It is expected that it will continue to increase and reach 10 billion within this century. Asia, which has the highest population, will have 5.2 billion and Africa is expected to reach
3.6 billion (three times as now) in 2100. However, in developed countries such as Japan or Europe, populations will decrease under a condition that the average birth rate is only 1.7.That is lower than the number(2.1) to keep good population.

Boeing 787’s inaugural flight lands in Hong Kong
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has successfully completed its maiden voyage from Tokyo to Hong Kong on October 26, carrying 252
passengers and crew. This ANA Airlines aircraft was supposed to be available in 2008, however delivery was delayed due to a chain of troubles during development and production, including a fire during flight testing in November. The October 26 flight was a charter flight; ANA will begin normal service with the new model in November. ANA sold 6 seats in business class for the maiden voyage of the Dreamliner as part of a
charity event on the Internet. One seat was priced at US$34,000, or 13 times the regular fare. The Wall Street Journal reports that Bell Tucci, who won a bid, is a Miami businessman. He said he was attracted by the lure of the maiden voyage of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. He also confessed that he was careless and typed an extra 0 when he bid for it. Another bid winner is the CEO of an enterprise in California, Thomas Lee. He was also a passenger on the maiden voyages of the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first longrange, mid-size wide-body passenger jet. It is designed to save on fuel and expenses for airlines while offering passengers more comfort in flying. Tourism Trends and Outlook. The number of inbound tourists increased at a rate of 3.9 percent from 1995 to 2010, but is expected to fall to 3.3 percent from 2010 to 2030. Tourists will mostly visit destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to hold 30 percent of the world’s tourism market by 2030. At that time, Northeast Asian coun-
tries, including China, the Republic of Korea and Mongolia, will be favorite destinations for tourists. Given the slowing pace of world growth, the current global economic uncertainty and a mixed economic situation domestically, forecasts for many key tourism measures have been revised downwards in the short-term.

Asian American Parenting, A Pastor’s Perspective —
A Tiger Parent’s Goal and a Greater Goal
By Pastor David Larry Kim with Evelyn Eng
With you, I am well-pleased.” If every parent could learn to parent with this kind of unconditional love and unconditional pleasure, I believe every child would be compelled to honor this love. If every child could know this kind of love and acceptance, he would never need to prove himself again.
Christian Asian Mom’s Perspective by Evelyn Eng
A middle-schooler was at our church’s version of “Back to School Night” where students and their parents meet with youth’s Bible Study teachers for the first time. Each student was asked to introduce his* parent. This junior high student introduced his dad by saying, “He is strict, likes for me to study and doesn’t accept B’s.” I’m pretty sure that other students who heard this introduction would say it applied to their own parents as well. A high-schooler developed a serious mistrust for her parents when she found out that they were checking her cell phone call logs. They wanted to make sure that she was studying enough and not wasting her time talking on her phone. Many in my congregation have been raised by parents who would applaud the parenting style described by Amy Chua. Others have parents who would strongly disagree with Chua’s methods. Because my congregation is inter-generational, my parishioners range in age from 12 to 50. Some are parents…some are still being raised by parents. My congregation includes tiger mothers, anti-tiger mothers, children of tiger mothers and children of anti-tiger mothers. Since our congregation is made up of families, families are dear to my heart. As a pastor, I long for our church families to be strong and for our children to succeed. As a pastor, my views are shaped by God’s Word more than by worldly standards. I see the utter

importance of students excelling in school, and I encourage both parents and students to see this. However, getting good grades and going to a great college are not the end. Dr. Josephine Kim, a professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education asked an Asian Harvard student after his suicide attempt, “Why did you do this?” He said “All my life, my mom told me that I needed to get into Harvard. Once I did, I had nothing else to live for.” If straight A’s and the Ivy League schools are held up as the ultimate goal, it will lead to frustration, confusion and heartache. However, if we see that these as means to a greater end, we can find freedom from anxiety and give our students the space to really thrive in life. I have talked to both parents and students about their motivation to try to succeed and be number one. For the great majority, it comes down to wanting to prove their worth to their peers, themselves or their parents. The drive to succeed is a drive to feel significant and to earn the respect and admiration that they so desperately crave. I point both parents and students to a vision far greater. I point them to a parent who is truly perfect. In the Bible, God the Father gives us a paradigm of parenting and of sonship and daughterhood that is far more effective and less restricting than the tiger mother could ever be. He says to his Son Jesus, “You are my Son, whom I love.
Naturally, we want the best for our children, and academics is important to most Asians, including myself. Hopefully, excellent grades are not the only thing we want for our children. Developing their character is far more important. How we raise our children (consistent, loving discipline) and how we treat them (requiring performance for acceptance vs. unconditional acceptance) speaks volumes to their hearts. Our children need something more than “because I said so” or “to get into an Ivy League school” to motivate them. Every child desires the love and acceptance of his parents. If that comes with a price tag of straight A’s, then it becomes a yolk around the child’s neck. How can he function after he succeeds? Is life so fleeting and full of ladder rungs to constantly climb the next one up? Parents, could we possibly commend the efforts and encourage our children with love, hugs and acceptance? Could we trust God’s Holy Spirit to provide instruction to our children? Some of my children’s strongest lessons come not from my lectures or nagging, but from life experiences and failures. If I try to shield my children by pushing academic standards and protecting them from all else, I do my children a huge disservice. Prayer is a huge vehicle to begin the journey of changing myself from being a tiger mother and my children from being totally grades-driven. There is indeed a far greater vision and a far greater God. Love and acceptance are the motivation that will create the children that God desires. And even tiger mothers will be wellpleased with the results. *male gender is used to refer to children of either gender Rev. DL Kim is associate pastor of Harvest, the English congregation of Korean Presbyterian Church of Orlando. Evelyn Eng blogs about Asian American parenting issues at christianasianmom.wordpress.com.

enjoy the warmth of the host delegation but also they had a chance to introduce the city of Orlando to a vast audience of Chinese visitors, delegates and travel trade representatives. This can only enhance their common values and shared interests, thus cementing the basis of the relationship for years to come. CAI-SHEN: bring the wealth to your house In Chinese religion, the popular god (or gods) of wealth, widely believed to bestow on his devotees the riches carried about by his attendants. During the two-week New Year celebration, incense is burned in Cai Shen’s temple (especially on the fifth day of the first lunar month), and friends joyously exchange the traditional New Year greeting “May you become rich” (“Gongxi facai”). Cai Shen (財神) is the God of Wealth and Cai Shen Dao means the God of Wealth is coming. On the eve of Chinese New Year, almost all the Chinese will pray and “invite” the God of Wealth to their house. This is done as Chinese believes the Cai Shen will bring them wealth and good luck throughout the year. If you are interested in inviting CAI-SHEN (Money God) to your business or event, please contact Global Media LLC at 646-389-ASIA (2742).

Founded in 1980, Asian American Heritage Council’s mission is to recognize and reward Asian American students for their academic excellence, community service and leadership. AAHC consists of many Asian American organizations who works together to preserve the Asian culture and heritage through informative programs. The scholarship is mainly sponsored by Corporations such as Darden Restaurants, Hewitt’ Asian Diversity Network, Siemens, Universal Orlando, SunTrust Bank and Orlando Health. If you would like to know more about how to join the organization or how to apply the next year scholarship, please visit www.aahc-cf.org. AAHC 2010-11 Officers: Mario Ordona, Agnes Chau, Pauline Ho and Richard Shen
This year I was an applicant for the AAHC Student Scholarship, and was honored to win 1st place for the 7th grade category. Currently, I am an 8th grader at Stonewall Jackson Middle School. It was a great experience, especially the award ceremony at Sonesta Hotel. Applying for this scholarship gave me an opportunity to reflect on my local and Asian community involvement. This award is a checkpoint for me to see if I am on a path for a future that I want: to excel academically and become an architect or engineer; contribute to the community; and to be proud of my heritage.
See some of the recipients would like to say about the scholarship awards: I first applied for the AAHC scholarship as a sophomore, not fully realizing what would make me truly eligible for an award. Now, I’m a junior and I’ve realized the true purpose of the AAHC -- it’s not to make us show how brilliant and talented we are as individuals, but how we use our gifts to help the community and make a name for Asians in society. I realized that maybe, compared to others, I haven’t done enough of this and it was an excellent source of motivation for me to continue to try harder in the future. I want to follow the examples of my peers and the winners, and become a better person along the way and finally achieve my dream of becoming both a graphic designer and computer programmer. Thank you AAHC, for giving me the opportunity to realize all of this in one night
“Together We Accomplish More!”
This year, I applied for the AAHC Scholarship. I am very glad and honored to receive the 1st place scholarship for the 8th grade category. Now, I am a freshman and I have a better understanding of the AAHC program. I feel that the AAHC program encourages Asian American students to work hard in academic but also encourages us to balance our studies with community involvement and the development of leadership skills. AAHC has motivated many students, including me to strive and do our best to reach our goals. Also, I had the honor to perform with my brother Hans a music ensemble while Tiffany and Celeste performed a Chinese ribbon dance. Performing at the Award Ceremony was a great experience. AAHC has helped me by observing my peers and striving to achieve my goal to become a business man in the future.
